COUNTY FAIR RETURNS IN FULL FORCE FOR 2021 by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
The 172nd Annual Walworth County Fair will be held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St., Elkhorn, from Wednesday, Sept. 1, through Labor Day, Sept. 6. And while most people eagerly anticipate the annual tradition, this year the fair will be extra special because of the lack of events in 2020. “Because of the COVID pandemic, the 2020 fair was limited to the kid’s animal sale,” said Larry Gaffey, Walworth County Fairgrounds General Manager. A major change will also take place at
the fair this year, according to Gaffey. “The Walworth County Agricultural Society who are the owners of the fairgrounds, polled their members and voted to allow the serving of beer and wine at the fair for the first time in its 171 year history,” he said. “We will be serving wine and beer. Visitors to the fair will be able to purchase their drinks and walk around the fairgrounds with them in hand. The exception will be that alcoholic drinks will not be allowed in the exhibit areas or in the barn.” • CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

This year the theme of the Walworth County Fair is “Jam Packed Fun in 2021.” Visitors to the largest county fair in Wisconsin will be able to explore almost 100 acres of Fair activities.
Music headliners
Music has always filled the air and this year will be no different. The fair planners have done their best to bring a variety of musical acts to perform. On Saturday Sept. 4, country singer Justin Moore will appear on the Grandstand Main Stage at 7:30 pm. Moore has had a series of No. 1 singles on the Billboard country chart. Tickets for the event can be purchased online for $20 general admission (standing) or $25 to $45 for reserved seating. An entry ticket to the fair is also required. On Sunday evening, for King and Country, a Christian pop duo consisting of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone will appear on the Grandstand Main Stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this event can be purchased online for $20 for general admission (Standing) or $30 to $45 for reserved seating. Since the 171st fair was so limited last year, people are ready to return to a full slate of activities where families and friends can enjoy all the fair has to offer.
Fair showcase
The fair is a favorite time for young people who are interested in showcasing projects that they have worked on either through group activities or on their own. “In 2019 the last year that we had a full Fair, 84% of 4-H Club members in the area participated. For 2021 that percentage would suggest about 515 youth will be showcasing their 4-H project work in the Junior Show competitions,” said Deborah Harris, 4-H Youth Development Educator, and Associate Professor, Department of Extension University of Wisconsin. “Many of the youth will show in multiple exhibit classes.” 4-H members are not the only participants in the competitions. Members of the FFA and independent groups also compete with their projects. The contests range from food preparation such as canning, gardening, baking, and flowers, to cake decorating, team building skills, and the traditional animal and cattle raising – with each student hoping his or her project will be the Grand Champion. According to Harris, the participants not only learn how to complete a project but when they deal with judges face to face, they learn to share the exhibits they have created and the things they learned in the process. They also receive advice from the judges that can help them with their future projects and learn to build their communication and interview skills.
A $5,000 pickle prize
“This year there is a new competition which will give the winner $5,000. The prize is not a scholarship and has no strings attached to it. It can be used for anything the winner chooses,” Gaffey said. “The event is the Perfect Pickle Pucker Bowl sponsored by Frank’s Piggly Wiggly in East Troy. To enter a team of one adult (18 or older) and one youth (9 to 17 years old) will enter two Mason jars of homemade pickles that they have prepared. There is no entry fee.” The contest will be judged by certified pickle judges. Organizers anticipate there could be 600 or more entries. For many, the animal competitions are synonymous with county fairs and 4-H

and FFA activities. The crowning of the Grand Champion is the highlight for those who have raised their animals through the months. This family friendly festival offers many activities to keep children busy. These include the award-winning Barnyard Adventure Educational Area with a touchless tour with learning stations. A stop in the butterfly barn is also a favorite of children. While there, they will learn about the butterfly, its unique life cycle and its foods of choice. The butterfly barn holds about 250 butterflies, which they stock with the caterpillars in the spring, and allow them to go through their life cycle. Two new activities this year are the Ninja event and Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure for children to enjoy. There are also the traditional horse shows and kids’ pedal tractor pull.
Rides and food at the fair It would not be a festive fair without the carnival rides and attractions. Will the favorite ride be the tall Ferris wheel or the carousel or perhaps a new and more thrilling ride? For many eating their way through the fair is their way of enjoying the day. From the traditional hamburgers, hot dogs, pork sandwiches, and bratwurst to the popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and soft drinks, there seems to be no end of food choices and by the end of the day everyone will be too full to even consider more food. Camping on the grounds is another way to enjoy the fair. Many visitors come for the entire Fair and rent one of the campsites where they stay in their tent, motor home, or travel trailer. It is perfect for getting a head start on activities the next morning. For many families spending the last
week of summer attending the fair during the day and camping out at night has become a tradition, one their children will remember forever. The campsites have water and an electric hookup, a nearby picnic shelter, and facilities. While it is too late for this year, it is not too early to plan for next season. Visit walworthcountyfair.com to download an application. Entry to the Fair is $10 for adults, ($8 for seniors Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) and $5 for children. Children under 4 years of age are admitted free. Season passes can be purchased for $30 for adults and $15 for children but had to be purchased by Aug. 6 for this year’s fair. The headline acts for the 2021 Walworth County Fair are country singer Justin Moore and Justin Moore and Grammy-award winning duo, for King and Country. Moore takes the Main Stage at the Grandstand at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4. For King and Country will be on the Main Stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5.

According to his website, Moore has built a loyal following over the past decade with his traditional country sound and captivating live shows. Those fans helped boost his fifth studio album, Late Nights and Longnecks, to the top of the charts upon its release. Lead track “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home” and follow up “Why We Drink” both peaked at No. 1 on both Mediabase and Billboard bringing the Arkansas native’s tally to nine chart-toppers. Historic Log Cabin schedule
The Historic Log Cabin at the Walworth County Fair is in the park area of the fairgrounds, featuring daily presentations certain to pique the interest of all ages. One of the highlights in the Log Cabin this year is the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts’ Quarantine Quilts Display and a Make and Take Craft. In March of 2020, when the world (along with Wisconsin and the United States) went into quarantine as a way to help stop the spread of COVID-19, the museum put out a call for artists to submit 12-by-12-inch blocks that reflected their experiences, thoughts and feelings about the pandemic. Intended to encourage individuals to keep creating while staying safely at home, the call received an overwhelming response with more than 500 blocks submitted from more than 400 artists. View a sampling of the quilts and learn more at the presentation at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4. A make-and-take craft will be offered for all ages. The benefits of organic agriculture Modern consumers have more choices than ever before. Whether they’re buying appliances, books, clothing, or any of the myriad necessities of daily life, consumers have a wealth of products to choose from. An abundance of options also is available at the grocery store. That’s especially true in the produce aisle, where many stores have expanded their fresh fruit and vegetable offerings. That expansion reflects a growing preference among consumers for fresh products, including fresh produce. A 2018 report from the market research firm IRI and the Food Marketing Institute found that sales of fresh foods comprised just under 31 percent of food industry sales in 2017. Customers who prefer fresh fruits and vegetables to frozen alternatives may wonder if they should be even more selective when purchasing their favorite foods in the produce aisle. That decision may come down to whether or not to purchase organic produce. Organic produce can be significantly more expensive than non-organic fruits and vegetables, so it’s understandable if budget-conscious consumers cannot afford to go entirely organic. Reduced soil degradation Organic agriculture reduces environmental degradation. The Organic Trade Association notes that synthetic pesticides and fertilizers used on some conventional farms can deplete the soil of valuable nutrients and increase environmental degradation. Organic farmers do not use such pesticides or fertilizers, instead utilizing such practices as composting, cover cropping and crop rotation, each of which can have positive, long-term effects on soil quality.

Organic produce reduces exposure to pesticides and antibiotics. UC Davis Health notes that organic produce has been proven to reduce consumers’ exposure to pesticides and antibiotics. That’s a significant benefit, as pesticide exposure has been shown to lead to neurodevelopmental issues and has been linked to higher cancer risk. Consumers shopping on budgets can pick and choose which organic foods they purchase, as UC Davis Health notes that certain foods have been shown to have higher pesticide residues than others. Apples, celery, grapes, spinach, strawberries, and tomatoes have high levels of pesticide residues, so choosing organic versions of these foods may be a wise choice. Avocados, broccoli, cabbage, and cantaloupe are some of the foods that typically have low levels of pesticide residue.
Organic agriculture benefits local wildlife. A 2015 study from researchers in Argentina that was published in the journal Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment found that small mammals were more abundant around organic farms than conventional farms. That’s not just good for those mammals, but also the farmers, as small mammals can feed on insects that would otherwise adversely affect crops.

While the 2020 Walworth County Fair was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the area’s youth were still able to show their animals and agriculture projects before the fair judges.
