The University of WisconsinWhitewater, founded in 1868, is known for its award winning programs, students organizations and athletic achievements, including national championship football, men’s basketball, men’s wheelchair basketball and rugby teams.

UW-Whitewater provides 50 undergraduate programs and 15 graduate programs to a campus of more than 12,000 students. The campus, voted one of the Top 100 Workplaces in southeastern Wisconsin, is located on 404 rolling acres with 40 major buildings, a nature preserve and an arboretum.

The University maintains institutional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission, and holds a variety of specialized accreditations at academic college and program levels. The institution’s teacher education programs are also approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

For the second consecutive year, in 2018 the University of WisconsinWhitewater was named among the Colleges of Distinction – a national honor that recognizes campuses for exceptional teaching and dedication to student success.

Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of a review of each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, strategic plan, student satisfaction, and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to the four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant

community and successful outcomes.

The university serves the community and region through various cultural events and volunteer efforts. These events include theatrical and musical productions, art and cultural exhibits, visiting artists, speakers and lecturers.

On and off campus, students have donated thousands of hours of volunteer time over the past year to help improve the lives of others in Whitewater and its surrounding communities.

Athletics

The University of WisconsinWhitewater is home to one of the finest collegiate athletic programs in the nation. With each season, the Warhawks build on a tradition of academic and athletic excellence. In fact, the decade has seen the Warhawks capture National Championships in baseball, volleyball, football, gymnastics and men’s basketball.

The success of Warhawk sports teams parallel the accomplishments inside the classroom of UW-Whitewater studentathletes. With 39 chancellor scholarathletes, and a grade point average over 3.0, Warhawk student-athlete success happens both in the classroom and on the field of play.

Athletics are just part of the social life at UWW. The James R. Connor University Center is the heart of campus. It is the central gathering place for students to socialize, enjoy meals and attend academic and cultural activities.

2019-20 performances span multiple genres The Young Auditorium 2019-20 season kicks off with an opening night ceremony and pre-concert party at 6 p.m. Sept. 20.

Hiplet Ballerinas Sept. 25, 7:30 p.m.

Presented by Cultural Affairs, Hiplet fuses classical pointe technique with African, Latin, Hip-Hop and urban dance styles rooted in communities of color. It was specifically designed to make ballet accessible to all by mixing it with current popular songs familiar to audiences who don’t normally attend ballet performances.

In the new musical, Judy Moody and Stink, this dynamic sister and brother duo take audiences on a hilarious adventure. As usual, Judy is in a mood. After seeing her classmate’s picture on the front page of the newspaper, Judy wants to be famous and sets off to find fame and happiness. All the while, Stink and his foul-smelling sneakers become a real distraction as he vies for the coveted Golden Clothespin Award.

Gala Holiday Concert Dec. 7, 6 p.m.

An annual holiday tradition, this evening of holiday music features a dinner in the Kachel Cener at 6 p.m., concert at 7:30 p.m., and silent auction, as well as nearly every student ensemble playing throughout the building.

All proceeds from the dinner, auction, and concert benefit the UW-Whitewater Music Department’s scholarship fund, which allows the department to recognize students for their talents and academic excellence.

A table for eight with concert tickets is $350. Single tickets for dinner and the show are $45 for general admission and $40 for students and seniors older than 65.

It’s A Wonderful Life: Live from WVL Radio Theatre Dec. 18, 7 p.m.

A sesquicentennial year of highlights

UW-Whitewater breaks ground on Community Engagement Center and new hotel Collaboration and creativity are driving plans for the University of WisconsinWhitewater’s Community Engagement Center and a new hotel on the city’s west side.

The site, located at 1260 W. Main St., is undergoing a major redesign, including the construction of a privately owned and operated 70-room Fairfield Inn & Suites on the south side of the property.

The university leased the existing 52,000-square-foot building to the north, which previously housed a Sentry grocery store, which is being transformed into a state-of-the-art hub for faculty, staff, students and community members to engage in learning, projects and research.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Sept. 11, 2018.

“For 150 years, UW-Whitewater has been dedicated to serving our communities, and we are proud to be a partner in bringing a hotel and the Community Engagement Center to the region,” former Chancellor Beverly Kopper said in a news release.

“I want to express my appreciation to the UW-Whitewater Foundation, which previously owned the property and saw the potential for this space to serve the educational and hospitality needs of the community. This project is an example of the outstanding cooperation between UW-Whitewater, the foundation, the City of Whitewater, the developer (United Development Solutions) and the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development

According to the release, the engagement center’s mission keeps with the Wisconsin Idea, that the people and resources of the university stretch beyond the boundaries of campus to positively impact lives across the

state.

“We envision this building as a place where everyone can collaborate to find creative ways to make a difference in our communities,” Kopper said in the release.

“We also will expand and enhance our training and certification programs to serve

even more students and adult learners.”

The facility will house: • Business development centers that support entrepreneurs and business owners with consulting, market research and educational and other services • A safety lab to train future workspace inspectors about the proper techniques using hands-on experiences • Clinical suites for counseling, speech pathology and social work faculty and students to serve patients and clients • An art gallery and studio to display UW-Whitewater’s permanent art collection, welcome visiting artists and provide archival storage • A computer testing center for students and community members to complete certifications and fulfill degree and licensure requirements • Continuing education services to facilitate adult outreach and training opportunities In addition, the center will feature dedicated classrooms, meeting spaces, conference rooms and co-working areas to host training sessions, workshops and other programming.

“The Community Engagement Center is being redesigned with an architecturally industrial vibe that allows for innovative and flexible spaces,” said Grace Crickette, vice chancellor for administrative affairs.

“Some areas will feature roll-up garage doors so that visitors can see learning as it happens.”

Whitewater’s Cravath Lake among eight sites for second annual cleanup effort

They found footwear, tires and more typical, everyday trash. And don’t forget the parks and recreation sign, which they removed from Spring Brook near Palmer Drive in Janesville.

Creative Marketing Unlimited, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s student chapter of the American Marketing Association, led a group of about 50 to 60 local participants in the Protect Wisconsin Waterways initiative in 2017.

They joined the first Rock River Sweep event, helping clean garbage from waterways in Janesville and Beloit.

Sept. 8, 2018, many of these same students and other environmentally supportive residents from the City of Whitewater and the Rock River Stormwater Group took part in cleanup activities across the Rock River watershed.

The local cleanup was in the morning with Cravath Lakefront Park as the hub, where they will try to remove as much trash as possible along its shoreline.

Evan MacDougall, was a fifth-year senior at UW-W, is president of the Creative Marketing Unlimited club at the time.

He said its lofty goal is gathering 200 participants for last year’s event.

“It’s difficult because school hasn’t started, so we’ll only have about a week when students come back,” he said.

“But we’ve contacted radio stations and newspapers and been busy on Facebook and social media. We’re trying to get more groups and businesses involved.

“We got involved a bit late last year, but we’re taking the next step and doing this on our own,” MacDougall added. “The feedback we’ve received definitely has been good. Our goal is trying to make it bigger and better every year.”

In 2017 cleanup events occurred in the Town of Beloit, City of Beloit, City of Janesville and City of Waupun. Last year’s efforts were planned at four additional sites: the cities of Fort Atkinson, Milton and Beaver Dam, plus the Cravath Lake group.

of marketing and a faculty adviser to the student group.

“The Rock River Stormwater Group is the driving force behind this effort,” he said. “Our AMA chapter has received longstanding respect as one of the top collegiate groups in the country, and this project continues the real-world experiential learning that we emphasize on campus.”

Wisconsin’s communities are interconnected through its waterways, so what happens in Waupun, for example, ends up affecting each municipality south along the Rock River.

Recognizing this, the stormwater group has advocated that residents pay attention to how their day-to-day activities – such as cleaning up pet waste, keeping grass clippings out of the street and minimizing fertilizers and salt use – can make a difference.

Dahl said UW-Whitewater students have

worked hard and want to accomplish just that.

“They’ve gone to farmers markets and K through 12 classrooms … they’re being proactive and focusing on a message of beautifying our waterways, and that starts with businesses and homes,” said Dahl, who has taught at UW-Whitewater for 10 years. “They want to plan and promote these efforts, but they also are active in them. It’s been a great opportunity for them to work with various municipalities, but also from a leadership perspective.”

And these participants hope that what they’re doing becomes contagious throughout the region. After all, the Rock River is 284 miles long, and these efforts are meant to revitalize the waterway and help leave a positive footprint on the environment.

UW-Whitewater’s group and its volunteers concentrated on Cravath Lakefront.

“We’re focusing on public land areas, but the idea is to encourage homeowners and businesses to get involved because this benefits everybody,” Dahl said. “Everything that goes into our stormwater drains gets into our waterways. So, we’re going to divide and conquer and clean as much as we can. Every individual can make a difference.”

Protect Wisconsin Waterways is a stormwater education outreach initiative supported by the Rock River Stormwater Group. The Rock River Stormwater Group is a coalition of communities from Beaver Dam to Beloit committed to improving the health of the Rock River and other local waterways. The group recognizes that water quality from stormwater runoff is an interconnected issue and believes everyone can make a difference by focusing on the impact they have on the local waterways right from their own backyard.

“We hope to make a sort of ‘first alert’ system for these softeners that will let a customer know when their resin (the material that actually does the filtering in a water softener) is getting to the point where it can no longer be used, so that it can be caught earlier and cause less of a headache for customers and installers alike.”

Nufer said that his job at a company that builds water softeners also prompted his interest in the topic.

“I’m exposed often to the customers that come in and talk about the common problems with softeners they have installed,” Nufer said. “When I heard exactly what the problem was, I figured that there had to be a somewhat simple solution to it and brought it up to Dr. Yavuzcetin. He suggested that I join the SURF program, and the rest is history.”

Commenting on his participation in the Undergraduate Research program, Nufer said, “Honestly, just the experience of being in such a program has been a gift. I get to see firsthand other students’ projects, and I’m able to share my own discoveries and hopefully influence others. It feels very rewarding to be able to make these connections, and I hope more opportunities like this arise in the future.”

Warhawks open football season Sept. 7 The University of WisconsinWhitewater football team has released its 2019 schedule, which begins Sept. 7 at Perkins Stadium against Dubuque (Iowa) at 2 p.m.

The Dubuque game is one of three nonconference contests on the 2019 slate for the Warhawks, who enter the program’s 126th season of competition this fall.

UW-Whitewater topped Dubuque 38-6 on the road in its 2018 season opener. Members of the American Rivers Conference, the Spartans finished with a 7-3 record last season, and are coached by former UW-W offensive coordinator Stan Zweifel.

The Warhawks visit ConcordiaMoorhead (Minn.) on Sept. 14 for a 12 p.m. kickoff in another rematch from last season. The Cobbers finished 5-5 last fall, including a 4-4 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

UW-Whitewater defeated ConcordiaMoorhead 24-6 at Perkins Stadium in last year’s affair.

The non-conference season closes Sept.

Season tickets and parking passes for the 2019 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football season are now on sale to the general public through the UW-Whitewater Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Parking spots in the reserved parking area are available for purchase to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis through Aug. 30.

Starting this year, all season parking/ ticket purchases must be made online.

Cost for a 2019 preferred parking pass in the stadium lot (Lot 24) is $150. The purchase guarantees parking for all home games, including postseason competition, and two tickets for each of the five regular season home games, not including postseason.

Each additional parking spot requires a separate $150 donation and still includes two season tickets.

Hang tags, tickets and additional information will be sent in mid-August.

All proceeds from the season parking pass/season ticket sale go to Warhawk Athletics. All UW-Whitewater studentathletes benefit directly from the funds raised through this annual sale.

Single-game parking will be available on game days in all other campus lots.

“At first, connecting and filming everything on your own, and then editing it,” Haley said. “But then you say, ‘I did that.’

“This requires a lot of communication and getting to know a lot of people, so I had to improve those skills. I was always creative, but it was a different kind of creativity. Not everything works out, but at the end of the day, it’s all about getting something. This will help me start and promote my own business some day.”

Zac is the veteran, having come on board under Alan Luckett, who left to take over the

local access station in Janesville.

“I wasn’t very creative and not very computer savvy when I came here, but I definitely like working with the equipment,” said Zac, who calls himself a loud introvert.

“I had to learn how to work with different people to find the best ways to get the sound right and get the cameras set up in the right locations, like for the concerts.

“But this work will help me get a higher skilled job,” Popke said.

“This job makes me get out of my comfort zone,” Andra said.

Tips from UW-W Campus Police Department

KEEP YOUR DORM ROOM SAFE, SECURE Don’t leave valuables, such as a checkbook, wallet, cash or jewelry, out in plain sight. Secure them inside of a drawer.

You should not keep large sums of cash in your room. Open a checking account or get a credit/debit card that will replace the need to have cash on hand.

Lock your residence hall room door, even if you’re only going to the bathroom or away from the area for a few minutes. Don’t share information about the door combinations with others. The person you tell may be a friend, but you have no idea who they might accidentally tell. University keys should never be lent to anyone. It’s impossible to determine if they were duplicated.

If you see unusual or suspicious activities, report it immediately to University Police.

Pay attention to people you don’t recognize who are on your floor. They may be just friends of someone else, but they also could be looking for an opportunity to steal or vandalize. If you see a crime occurring, call 911 right away! Don’t assume someone else has already called the police.

Report any broken windows, door latches or lights that aren’t functioning to Residence Hall staff. This way the items will get fixed in a timely fashion.

Hang up immediately if you receive an obscene or annoying call. Never reveal personal information or say you’re in your room alone if you don’t recognize the person’s voice. Be suspicious of callers who say they are conducting a survey, inform you that you’ve won a “prize” or request information, such as your credit card number.

Log the date and time that the obscene or annoying call was received. Contact University Police for further advice on dealing with this type of call or to investigate repeated calls.

PERSONAL SAFETY Go out with a friend; not alone. Walking alone, especially at night, is not a good idea. Always walk purposefully and look confident. Stay alert to your surroundings and the people in the area. During darkness, use the lighted sidewalks and parking lots for your travels and avoid shortcuts on unlit paths or secluded areas.

Be cautious about isolated areas, such as library stacks, remote classrooms or laboratories. When you need to be in these areas after normal class hours, make arrangements to work or study with a trusted classmate or friend. Let others know where you’ll be and when you plan on returning.

If you are being harassed by someone who is in a car, walk swiftly or run in the opposite direction to a safe area. If you’re really frightened, scream! It’s better to be embarrassed than assaulted. Try to remember the license plate number of the vehicle.

When socializing, pair up with other friends. Stick together and don’t let a friend go off alone with someone they’ve just met.

Watch for and remember the locations of the various emergency telephones situated around the campus.

PROTECT YOUR STUFF Lock all doors and close all windows when leaving your car, whether it’s for just a few minutes or several hours. Park in well-lit areas and try not to walk alone in parking lots at night.

Store valuables in the car’s truck or, at least, hide them from the view of someone looking through the windows. Stereo components, cellular phones and radar

This fall, a new residence hall will open, featuring many amenities that today’s students desire in on-campus

“Our new residence hall will offer extensive kitchen options, as well as spaces for group work and socialization, including computer labs. In keeping with our campus mission, the hall was constructed with universal design principles to serve students with disabilities. We are excited to offer this modern residence hall experience to our students,” Green said.

UW-Whitewater welcomes its 17th chancellor

Dwight Watson began his tenure Aug. 1 as the 17th chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The UW System Board of Regents named Watson to lead the university on May 23.

“For more than 150 years, dedicated people at the University of WisconsinWhitewater have been transforming the lives of students and positively impacting the region we serve. We have much to be proud of as we begin a new academic year. I am humbled and honored to serve as chancellor, and I am looking forward to continuing to move the university forward,” Watson said.

“I want to assure members of the Warhawk family that I will listen, learn and lead. I plan to listen to students, faculty, staff and the community. I plan to learn all I can about UW-Whitewater and the region.

And I will then work collaboratively to help lead the university to greater

achievements.”

Watson will hold listening sessions at the Whitewater and Rock County campuses, and in the communities of Whitewater and Janesville. “I want to hear from as many people as possible, and I especially want to Dwight Watson hear from those people whose voices aren’t always heard,” Watson said.

“This is an exciting time of year for the university. It won’t be long before our students and faculty return for the fall semester, and are engaged in our vibrant campuses. I am energized by the activity

of the students, faculty and staff. The enthusiasm of the Warhawk family fuels our commitment to our goals,” he said.

Watson served since 2015 as the provost and vice president of academic and student affairs at Southwest Minnesota State University, an institution serving about 7,300 students as part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

In this role, he focused on student achievement and removing barriers to success. He designed and implemented policies and practices pertaining to diversity, inclusion, access, and equity.

Watson helped build collaborative relationships with two-year community and technical colleges, including creating transfer pathways and place-bound 2+2 programs. Working collaboratively with shared governance, he has overseen successful accreditation, assessment, and strategic planning. He has fundraising and

government relations expertise.

Previously, Watson served as dean of the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa (2010-2015); associate dean of the teacher education program at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire (2007-2010); and chair of the Department of Education at Hamline University (20022007). As a professor, his primary teaching focus was literacy development for young and adolescent readers. His scholarship has focused on applied research connected to the literacy and language acquisition of students of color and urban learners.

Currently, his research is on leadership development, faculty recruitment and hiring practices, and teacher pathways to diversify the workforce.

His professional experience also includes pre-K-12 teaching in his home state of South Carolina as well as North Carolina and Minnesota.

A brief history of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

Whitewater Normal School was one of several state teachers’ colleges founded throughout Wisconsin in the 19th century. Work on the normal school building began in the fall of 1866, and the building was finally completed

by April of 1868. Between 1868 and the end of Whitewater’s industrial era in the 1890s, the Whitewater Normal School grew steadily, and the school building, soon named “Old Main,” grew as well.

The first addition to the building, which doubled its space, was constructed in 1876. Old Main burned in 1891 but was quickly rebuilt. In 1897, a new addition on the front of the building was completed.

After World War II, Whitewater became known almost exclusively as a “college town.” There was still a lack of strong industrial development in town, and commercial development did not grow much beyond its boundaries in the existing downtown.

The Whitewater Normal School, however, was transformed between 1950 and 1975. During this period, student enrollment went from under 1,000 students to over 10,000 students, and the normal school became a university.

The Whitewater Normal School began its meteoric rise when, in 1913, the school developed a program for training business teachers. The program soon became nationally recognized, and with the addition of a fouryear education degree, the normal school became the Whitewater Teachers College in 1927.

After World War II, two national trends resulted in major expansion at the college. One was the GI Bill, which brought thousands of World War II veterans to colleges between 1945 and the early 1950s. The second trend was the “baby boom,” a skyrocketing birth rate between 1946 to 1964 that, beginning in the mid-1960s, brought thousands of students to colleges. The good economy of the 1950s and 1960s, and the general support for college education from the state government, also helped expand enrollments.

In 1951, the Board of Regents approved a plan to allow the Whitewater Teacher’s College (and most other state teacher’s colleges) to grant liberal arts degrees along with education degrees. At that point, Whitewater became part of the Wisconsin State College system and was then renamed the Wisconsin State College-Whitewater.

In the 1960s, recognizing the expansion of the state college system beyond liberal arts and education, the Board of Regents changed the system to the Wisconsin State Universities. In 1972, the Wisconsin State University system merged with the University

of Wisconsin system, and all state universities became affiliated with the University of Wisconsin. Since 1972, Whitewater’s campus has been known as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The influx of more students at the university meant that the classrooms and facilities in Old Main were not sufficient. The first dorms were built in the 1950s, and additional facilities were added in the 1950s and 1960s.

Much of the campus classroom space, however, was still located in Old Main.

In 1970, a devastating arson fire destroyed 80 percent

of Old Main. Only a portion of that building, Hyer Hall, could be salvaged. The important result of that fire was that a number of new classroom buildings were erected in the 1970s, including a center for the arts.

At the present time, the University of WisconsinWhitewater is still the town’s largest employer, and Whitewater will probably always be known as a “college town.”
