The University of WisconsinWhitewater, founded in 1868, is known for its award winning programs, students organizations and athletic achievements, including national championship football, men’s basketball, men’s wheelchair basketball and rugby teams.

With more than three-dozen chancellor scholar-athletes, and a grade point average over 3.0, Warhawk studentathlete success happens both in the classroom and on the field of play.

Practice with the

Warhawks UW-W organization teams with Special Olympics for football camp

Smiles, at times, were accompanied by intensity on the field this summer at Perkins Stadium where it is generally quiet during the Warhawks’ offseason.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Special Olympics Organization teamed with Special Olympics Wisconsin to have 35 Special Olympics athletes participate in football drills with members of the Warhawks football team on the home turf of the six-time national champions.

After doing the drills, the athletes practiced end zone celebratory dances, posed for photographs and ate a meal out in the pavilion adjacent to the stadium, all with players from the Warhawks football team.

“It’s a tremendous experience for our athletes to participate in anything at a college level because so many of them are adults. A lot of people think it’s only children, but it is eight and up, and our mean age is actually 31 years old,” said Don Wigington of Special Olympics Wisconsin. “A lot of them will go and see college games, but for them to be here and on the football field to participate with them, is just incredible.”

This was a part of relatively-new Special Olympics initiative called “Unified Sports, which Wigington directs.

“Unified Sports is for people with, or without disabilities to gather on a football field, on a basketball court, on a tennis court or in any type of sport. We have a competitive model,” Wigington said.

Brandon Heine of St. Coletta just outside of Jefferson was one of the athletes who went to Perkins Stadium on April 28 to take in the day with the football team.

“I loved it,” Heine said.

His favorite part was dancing in the end zone, he said.

“They’re nice college people around here,” Heine said.

Unified Sports has competitive teams at UW-Madison and Marquette, and events like the football camp at Perkins Stadium are considered player development.

“There’s more teaching and coaching, so there’s more learning,” Wigington said.

“It’s just a different atmosphere and level of excitement from what we are used to,” Wigington added. “We have a lot of bowling tournaments and a lot of track and field tournaments, but the more they are able to get with the general population, especially the college kids, the excitement level is greater. They still love the competition level, but these Unified days like this give a different element to the experience.”

The Special Olympics athletes a part of the day had a variety of different ability levels.

“So, what something like this does is it’s an avenue for success for any ability. We’ve got a couple of these guys who can flat out play. One of these guys can throw a spiral probably 60 yards. There’s others who have more difficulties or their disability is greater, but they can still come out here and feel successful. That’s what’s neat about these things,” Wigington said.

Alyssa Bohm, the UW-Whitewater Special Olympics Organization president and a special education major, helped organize the event.

Bohm, a Racine native who is a special education major at the university, said the event took months of thinking and communicating to pull off. She worked with several Special Olympics officials and marketing partners in preparing for the event.

“It’s an indescribable feeling. I have been volunteering for Special Olympics since I was in high school and when I was a junior in college, myself and two other students wanted to be able to create an inclusive organization that provided opportunities for people with special needs,” Bohm said.

“Seeing the athletes doing their touchdown dances in the end zone and blocking the football players in drills while simultaneously having a smile on their face shows that this organization is changing people’s lives. Hearing from coaches and parents that their athlete who has not smiled in

months is having the time of his life makes me feel like I have accomplished what I wanted to do.

This was the second time the two entities collaborated to make this event a reality.

UWW releases 2017 football schedule

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team has announced its 2017 schedule.

The program’s 124th season of competition begins Saturday, Sept. 2, with a non-conference game against Illinois-Wesleyan.

In their first of four road games to open the campaign, the Warhawks will travel to Bloomington, Ill. for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Titans, who finished with a 7-2 mark, including a 6-2 finish in the highly-competitive College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

UW-Whitewater continues non-conference action at noon on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.). The Cobbers, who compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, finished 7-3 in 2016.

The Warhawks wrap up their non-conference schedule Saturday, Sept. 16, at Washington-St. Louis at noon. The Bears earned a share of the Southern Athletic Association title and reached the first round of the NCAA Championship, where they were defeated

by UW-Oshkosh.

Following a bye week, UW-Whitewater resumes action Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. at UW-Oshkosh, which reached the Stagg Bowl in 2016. The last three games between the two teams have been decided by a combined seven points.

The Warhawks will play their first of four home games during the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. against UW-Stout. The team’s home opener will also be Family Fest and Alumni Day at Perkins Stadium. Last season’s Family Fest contest, a 17-14 triumph over UW-Oshkosh, drew a crowd of 17,535, the highest NCAA Division III attendance for a single game on record.

UW-Whitewater returns to action on a shortened week to host UW-La Crosse on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.

Following road trips to UW-River Falls, on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m., and UW-Stevens Point, on Oct. 28, at1 p.m., the Warhawks host UW-Platteville on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. for Homecoming and Hall of Fame Day at Perkins Stadium. The Pioneers earned an at-large bid to last year’s NCAA Championship and finished 8-3.

UW-Whitewater wraps up the regular season Saturday, Nov. 11, against UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m. on Shriners and Senior Day at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks finished the 2016 season with a 12-1 record, claiming the program’s 35th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship for the 11th time in the last 12 years.

UW-W student playing collegiate athletics despite cancer in leg as child

t’s a dream of many to participate in collegiate athletics, but few have that opportunity.

Laura Vacek, 20, of Waterford, is living out that dream right now even though at the age of seven it may have looked unlikely.

Vacek, also a student in her sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been on the wheelchair basketball team since her freshman year.

When she grew up, Vacek was active.

Early on, she would ride bikes like most children.

When Vacek was seven, however, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in her right femur. Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare case of cancer in bones. It often begins in legs, bones of the pelvis and arms.

Surgery got rid of the cancer. However, between the damage that the cancer had already done to the leg and an accident by

the doctor clipping part of Vacek’s femur during the procedure, Vacek’s mobility was limited permanently. While she does not need a wheelchair, there was still an effect on her movement.

“I can still walk, but not very far. I can do long walks, but my leg gets really sore the next day. It helps out being at Whitewater because it’s a small campus,” Vacek said.

“But, I can’t run and that stuff.

“After my cancer, I wanted to do sports,” Vacek said.

However, Vacek realized it might be difficult with some sports. She tried swimming, but that put too much pressure on the leg.

“I wanted to do gymnastics, but that was impossible with the metal and all that. I couldn’t bend,” Vacek said.

However, encouragement from people at a cancer summer camp in the Lake Geneva area led to her to take a route in athletics she never thought of.

“Someone told me about this wheelchair basketball team in Milwaukee,” Vacek said.

“At first, I thought, ‘Well, I don’t really need a wheelchair, so why would I play wheelchair basketball?’ But then, I gave it some thought.”

She not only gave it a try, but kept on playing, enjoying it immensely.

“It’s kind of my lifestyle now. After playing, I couldn’t imagine not doing it,” Vacek said.

“It’s better than sitting on the couch,” she added.

Her perseverance in finding a sport was later tested in actually playing wheelchair basketball as well.

“There’s a lot of crashing into people.

It might be more physical than mobile basketball,” Vacek said.

That crashing into other players inevitably leads to falling over in the wheelchair. Players are strapped in for safety, but they have to find a way to get back up, which is all a part of the game.

Sometimes fellow players will assist their teammates in getting up. Others are able to find their way up on their own with their arms and abs. However, Vacek learned another method that she was able to use in her efforts to get her and her wheelchair upright again while on the court.

“Luckily with me, I can use my left leg to get back up, so I just unhook it real quickly and get back up,” Vacek said.

However, her perseverance was tested in how she got up to continue playing in games.

“When I first started, I would always fall down and I could not get back up, and I hated that. It would really bother me,” Vacek said.

“So, I would bring my wheelchair down with me in the basement on the carpet, and make myself fall over. I would continuously try to get back up, get back up, get back up until I was able to do that.”

Competing nationally

The wheelchair teams travel just like any other college sport. The team has traveled to play at the University of Illinois and the

University of Texas-Arlington while Vacek has been on the women’s team. The team has also traveled to Kansas and Alabama.

However, a particular honor came just weeks ago for her as UW-Whitewater hosted the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.

Schools around the country are on a rotation to host the tournament, but it’s a nine-year rotation, so opportunities to play in a tournament of this significance on the home court is rare for Vacek and other athletes on the team.

“It was super cool. Just being here while it was here,” Vacek said.

It is a rare opportunity to just play on a team like this collegiately as well.

“It’s cool just having a college with wheelchair basketball. It’s the only Wisconsin college that has wheelchair basketball, particularly a women’s team. So, there’s not a lot of options in wheelchair basketball,” Vacek said.

Not only does the team travel like any other collegiate sports team, it trains like any other also.

“We are a club sport, but we do the same practice as able-bodied basketball team. We do cardio and shooting drills and other things like that,” Vacek said.

There are days Vacek helps load the bus and with other duties prior to practice and games.

Vacek also has the chance, with her teammates, to speak to elementary, middle

school and high school students to inspire them to persevere and not let setbacks hold them back, just as Vacek did in her quest to be an athlete.

“We basically talk about what our disability is, how it affected us in our life, how we found wheelchair basketball and how wheelchair basketball isn’t any different than any other sport. You’re still dealing with competitiveness. You’re still working out.

You’re still doing everything. You’re just sitting in a chair,” Vacek said.

Vacek said it’s important for people who have any disability that if they want to pursue goals like playing sports, they shouldn’t be deterred.

“Just give it a shot. You don’t know unless you try, and it doesn’t have to be wheelchair basketball. There are other sports that you could do like rugby or other sports. It’s not just wheelchair basketball. If you don’t like it, move on and give something else a shot.

There are opportunities out there for you,” Vacek said.

One more goal Vacek achieved her goal of becoming an athlete in high school and later college.

However, there is one more goal she would like to complete.

“I would like to be on Team USA at some point,” Vacek said.

Vacek is majoring in social work with a minor in special education. She plans on being a child life specialist.

As a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Lauren Smith has had hungry students and homeless students in her classroom. She’s seen students miss multiple classes while they looked for car repair money so they could make the commute back to campus.

“I had one student who suffered through weeks of illness because she couldn’t afford the healthcare she needed and another who waited weeks to fix a broken wheelchair because she, too, was short on funds,” she said.

To help more low-income students stay enrolled despite financial emergencies, Smith applied for and won a $315,000 grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates.

The grant will pay emergency expenses for individual low-income students, up to $1,000, for anything from dental work to childcare expenses. In addition, student

UW-Whitewater will begin making student emergency grants starting in fall 2017. Students needing financial assistance can apply online. Additional information will be communicated to campus once the website is live.

“Funds will be distributed quickly – within 24 hours in most cases, so that students can refocus on their studies and continue toward graduation,” Smith said.

“We are excited to see the effect this grant will have on UW-Whitewater student success.”

More than $150,000 will be distributed to low-income students in financial distress each year for the next two years.

This is the second phase of Mielke’s project. Findings during the first phases indicated that grade point average was not correlated with exercise performance, but that family influence and work performance were positive indicators of physical activity.

“In the second year of the study, we found there was a positive relationship between GPA and physical activity, and the influence of family, university friends, and team support were predictors of physical activity,” Mielke said.

In October 2016, Mielke presented her

study in Reno, Nev., at the conference of the Western Society of Kinesiology and Wellness.

In addressing the gathering at the end of the event, Susan Elrod, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, recalled on her involvement in research projects as an undergraduate student.

“What we learn in our classrooms sometimes seems easy because it’s already done, but the process of actually discovering that is a lot more difficult and challenging,” Elrod said.

Elrod also noted that one of the important benefits of undergraduate research at UWWhitewater is that it “helps students stay in school and graduate at higher rates.”

The voluntary compliance of the individual is the only way the law is maintained. It is physically impossible and incongruent with a free society for the police to deter crime and enforce the law upon every citizen at all times. It is voluntary compliance. which maintains order. Enforcement can only be used as a tool to educate, encourage

Police officers are entrusted with the authority to infringe upon the freedom of the individual based upon their own observation, evidence and belief of what occurred within any given situation. We have dedicated ourselves and our lives to the upholding of the rights given to all of us and holding accountable those willing to inappropriately deny those rights.

Safety on campus and beyond Tips from UW-W Campus Police Department

Keep your dorm room safe, secure

Don’t leave valuables, such as a checkbook, wallet, cash or jewelry, out in plain sight. Secure them inside of a drawer.

You should not keep large sums of cash in your room. Open a checking account or get a credit/debit card that will replace the need to have cash on hand.

Lock your residence hall room door, even if you’re only going to the bathroom or away from the area for a few minutes. Don’t share information about the door combinations with others. The person you tell may be a friend, but you have no idea who they might accidentally tell. University keys should never be lent to anyone. It’s impossible to determine if they were duplicated.

If you see unusual or suspicious activities, report it immediately to University Police.

Pay attention to people you don’t recognize who are on your floor. They may be just friends of someone else, but they also could be looking for an opportunity to steal or vandalize. If you see a crime occurring, call 911 right away! Don’t assume someone else has already called the police.

Report any broken windows, door latches or lights that aren’t functioning to Residence Hall staff. This way the items will get fixed in a timely fashion.

The two trained together for about two-and-a-half weeks in the beginning of December.

“We’re still a pretty young team, so we are still learning a lot, still figuring each other out and all that stuff, but he is a good dog,” Servi said.

Hawk and Servi have been training together everyday since Servi brought Hawk to Wisconsin. The two have practiced and have tried to fine-tune his obedience and police skills. Hawk lives with Servi.

“He is fiercely loyal to me, so he will follow me wherever I go. If I leave him at the department and go do something, he’s

If you are being harassed by someone who is in a car, walk swiftly or run in the opposite direction to a safe area. If you’re really frightened, scream! It’s better to be embarrassed than assaulted. Try to remember the license plate number of the vehicle.

When socializing, pair up with other friends. Stick together and don’t let a friend go off alone with someone they’ve just met.

Watch for and remember the locations of the various emergency telephones situated around the campus.

If attacked

Go out with a friend; not alone. Walking alone, especially at night, is not a good idea. Always walk purposefully and look confident. Stay alert to your surroundings and the people in the area. During darkness, use the lighted sidewalks and parking lots for your travels and avoid shortcuts on unlit paths or secluded areas.

Be cautious about isolated areas, such as library stacks, remote classrooms or laboratories. When you need to in these areas after normal class hours, make arrangements

Lock all doors and close all windows when leaving your car, whether it’s for just a few minutes or several hours. Park in well-lit areas and try not to walk alone in parking lots at night.

Store valuables in the car’s truck or, at least, hide them from the view of someone looking through the windows. Stereo components, cellular phones and radar detectors are favorite items of thieves. Record the serial numbers of these items and secure them when parking your vehicle.

Don’t attach your name or address to your key ring. Keep your car keys on a separate ring from your other keys. Have your keys in your hand when returning to the parked

If you’re attacked, try to stay as clam as possible. Think rationally and evaluate your resources or options. Escape is always the best defense. Other tactics may include negotiation, screaming to attract attention, self-defense techniques or, even, acting “crazy.” You will have to make a decision based on the circumstances, such as the presence of a weapon, and the type of person you are. There is no one, right answer. Your personal survival may be at stake and you must do whatever is necessary to insure it.

Servi said she sometimes receives emails from people on the second floor of Goodhue Hall, the building that houses the department, saying they can hear Hawk bark.

Hawk often has the urge to investigate everything in his site, Servi said, which is just a part of his working nature and wanting to do his job.

Whenever Servi works, so does Hawk.

“We do 10-hour shifts, which he doesn’t seem to mind. He gets pretty stir crazy on days we have off,” Servi said.

“He is into everything and constantly has to be busy. If he is not stimulated in some way, he’ll find some way to stay busy, whether that’s chewing something he

shouldn’t or actually putting that into a good source like training and things like that. Part of my job is to keep him busy,” Servi said.

Servi said Hawk is a high-drive dog.

“It takes a lot for him to get tired. He constantly wants to play. He’ll run himself into the ground just to keep training or staying active.”

Hawk is a rescue dog, so it is unknown exactly how old he is. However, vets that have seen Hawk agree that he is between one and one-and-a-half years old.

“He’s really young, so he’s got some puppy in him. He’s got some puppy issues that we are working through, like with jumping. He wasn’t potty trained when I first got him, so we are working through that type of stuff. “ Explosive detection isn’t as common as

drug detection, Servi said. Hawk has not gone out on any mutual aid calls, but the goal of the department is for Hawk to be available for those types of calls if those situations arise.

There won’t be a set number of departments he will be made available to.

“If someone calls, we’ll do anything we can to assist. That’s obviously what we are here for,” Servi said. “Also, I know there aren’t a lot of bomb dogs in our area, or in the state for that matter. It’s not the number of drug dogs that are around.”

This is Servi’s first time working with a police dog.

“It’s a learning process, not only for me, but our department as well, with the equipment we need and what it actually entails,” Servi said. “But, it’s rewarding.”
