Welcomes you to its 115th season Welcome to the East Troy Electric Railroad! We hope that you enjoy your time here. Sit back and relax as we take you on a journey back in time.

This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of tourist trolleys in East Troy!

In 1972, The Wisconsin Electric Railway Historical Society began running trolleys on the line and in 1995 the organization now known as the East Troy Railroad Museum purchased the railroad from the Village of East Troy.

This year is also the railroad’s 115th year of continuous operation.

The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company (TMER&L) completed the interurban railroad from Milwaukee to East Troy in 1907. TMER&L is now known as We Energies. In 1939, the Village of East Troy purchased the railroad line from East Troy to Mukwonago. Today it is the last segment of Wisconsin’s once vast electric interurban railway network.

Now that you’re here, we hope you plan to enjoy one of our popular Dining Trains, offering you a choice of first-class dining experiences with fantastic three or four course meals, a family-oriented Picnic Train, or our new Sunday Brunch

The popular Burger Train will depart May 21. Or check out our new “Taste of East Troy” Train featuring locally sourced food. The Beer Tasting Train returns on Sept. 17.

Our regular season ends on Sept. 4 and we are again offering reserved seating on our “Harvest Fest” Trains on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of October.

Then, join Santa and his friends for a magical journey filled with carols and hot chocolate on our Christmas Trains! Our heated trolleys will take you on a journey to the Elegant Farmer where guests can visit Santa’s Workshop Nov. 25, 26 and 27, and Dec. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18.

Harvest Fest and Christmas Train tickets will be posted for sale later in the year.

Remember, that this museum would not function without its wonderful team of volunteers. Our group of dedicated

volunteers will do their best to give you a memorable experience. Interested in joining the group? Please ask a volunteer about opportunities. No matter what talent you might be able to bring to the table, we welcome your help!

Because we are an electric railroad, we ask that you do not touch anything under our cars. Safety is the most important thing, so please inform any of our volunteers if you see an unsafe situation.

Celebrating History & 50 Years of Fun Trains and Trolleys!

The East Troy Railroad Museum owns, maintains and operates historic electric trolley and interurban railroad cars on track completed by The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company (TMER&L) in 1907.

Our rail line between Mukwonago and East Troy is the last remnant of the TMER&L electric interurban rail system, which once operated more than 200 miles of track in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Since the East Troy line was the only form of public transportation in the area, it was designated as a U.S. Mail route. And since there were no competing railroads serving East Troy, TMER&L offered freight service on the line. This was profitable for the railroad and led to the growth of several businesses in the area, including a Standard Oil Distribution Center, East Troy Lumber, a United Milk Products Plant, and Equity Co-op’s feed and fuel plant.

With the development of better roads and highways, interurban lines gradually lost passengers as more and more people drove their own cars. By the late 1930s, the lines to Watertown, East Troy and Burlington were all experiencing financial difficulties.

In 1939, TMER&L petitioned the Public Service Commission to abandon the lines to Watertown, Burlington and East Troy.

The Village of East Troy and a group of concerned citizens opposed the abandonment of their line because the freight service was so important to area businesses. After several hearings and almost a year of negotiations, TMER&L agreed to sell the line from Mukwonago to East Troy to the Village of East Troy for $10,000.

The agreement included an interchange with the Soo Line Railroad, now the CN, which would allow freight traffic to continue. The Village of East Troy passed a referendum approving the purchase by a vote of 321 to 11. The line was saved and freight continued to be delivered to East Troy via the former electric interurban line.

On May 27, 1972, with permission from the Village of East Troy, The Wisconsin Electric Railway Historical Society began operating weekend trolley rides on the line using its own restored trolley equipment.

In 1985 the Wisconsin Trolley Museum took over operation of the railroad. In 1995 the Friends of the East Troy Railroad purchased the railroad from the Village of East Troy and continued to operate trolleys and interurban cars on the line – and to haul freight for businesses in the Village of East Troy.

In 2007 the name “Friends of East Troy Railroad Museum, Inc.” was changed to “East Troy Railroad Museum, Inc.” The organization is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation dedicated engaging visitors in the heritage of electric interurban railways and trolley systems through restoration, preservation and operation of historic equipment.

Our railroad, run almost entirely by 130 volunteers, hosts nearly 25,000 passengers every year. Regularlyscheduled trains run between East Troy and Mukwonago and Dinner Trains, Sunday Brunch Trains, Beer Tasting Trains and other special events take place throughout the April to October operating season.

The East Troy Railroad Museum and Indiana Dunes National Park are hosting an experiential learning event featuring historic Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad Cars on Saturday, Aug. 13, during the Museum’s annual “Chicago Day” event.

Chicago Elevated Cars and Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Car 761 will also make appearances.

Several of the restored South Shore Cars will be in operation, with trains departing from the Museum hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

National Park Rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions about Indiana Dunes National Park and the history of the South Shore Railroad.

You’ll experience what it was like to ride interurban trains 100 years ago.

Electric interurban trains were a very common way to travel between cities before the automobile became affordable and roads were improved for travel.

The National Park Service donated eight historic South Shore Railroad Cars to the museum in East

Troy in 2010. The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad had conveyed the cars to the National Park Service in 1984.

The East Troy Railroad Museum was one of a number of museums to receive the historic cars in the hope that they could be restored and operated so that visitors could experience what electric interurban travel was like in the early 20th century.

The East Troy Electric Railroad operates on 7.5 miles of track that has been in continuous operation for over 100 years.

The Museum has been in operation since 1972 and is the only museum in the country that regularly operates historic South Shore Railroad Cars on an electric interurban line. The 2022 operating season extends from April through October.

The East Troy Railroad Museum is located at 2002 Church Street in East Troy, Wisconsin, approximately 15 miles north of Lake Geneva and 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

On Railfan Day we take all of our equipment out of the barn and put it on display. You can ride a different rail car on each trip of the day. Once again we are offering fun family activities like face painting, miniature train rides, and operating model railroads.

Our regular season ends on Sept. 4 this year and we will offer special reserved seating on all Saturday and Sunday trains from Sept. 10 through Oct. 24.

Visit our website to see the schedule and purchase your tickets online in advance. Trains may not travel to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago during this time.

You will be able to pick your seats on specific trains ahead of time – so you always know you will be able July 16 to board the train for which you have tickets.

You may still buy tickets on a walk-up basis, Celebrate Milwaukee’s electric railroading history with a chance to see and ride on an historic Milwaukee subject to availability. If you plan to do apple picking or extended shopping, we suggest that you return to Streetcar or a newly-restored Chicago North Shore the Elegant Farmer after your train ride. and Milwaukee Silverliner car. Work cars from The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company (TMER&L) will be on display, too, along with historic tickets and timetables.

Celebrate Chicago’s railway history with a revival of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend railroad of 90 years ago. We have six operating South Shore cars, originally built in the late 1920s, plus Chicago Elevated Cars built in 1924. National Park Rangers from Indiana Dunes National Park will be on hand to explain the history of the South Shore Line.

Beer Tasting Train Sept. 17

Join us for a fun and educational beer tasting train!

Enjoy five different beers while traveling the route of the East Troy Electric Railroad. The train is a joint event with Black Point Estate on Geneva Lake.

A historian and beer aficionado from Black Point serves as our host, and Toothpicks, our wonderful caterer, provides the hors d’oeuvres. This 2-1/2-hour event starts and finishes at the East Troy Depot. Book your seats online under our Dinner Train heading at: easttroyrr.org.

Bring your kids or grandkids in costume and take a train from the Depot in East Troy to Town Hall Park, where kids can go “Trick-or-Treating” and enjoy the playground equipment before our trip back to East Troy.

Christmas Parade Train Dec. 4

The parade train brings Santa on his sleigh from Indianhead Park to East Troy for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Village Square. The train, which carries on a tradition started by Milwaukee Schuster’s Department Stores, is lit up like a fireworks show and plays Christmas music while Santa stops to greet kids and their parents at every railroad crossing.

Here children can visit Santa and get a photo taken with the jolly elf himself! Santa’s workshop wouldn’t be complete without some hot chocolate and cookies! Children receive a special gift on the return to East Troy.

Sunday Brunch Trains back in 2022

Try our Sunday Brunch Train! The meal features tasty Breakfast Pleasing Eggstrata, with bacon, sausage and egg custard, plus petite scones and muffins, fresh fruit, served with coffee and/or juice.

Enjoy a two-hour round trip on our beautiful dining cars with views of the Kettle Moraine countryside outside your picture windows. Ticket price is $59 per person.

The dress code is casual and restrooms are on board.

Volunteers at the East Troy Railroad Museum spent many hours restoring Car 33, which was put back into service in 2017.

The Picnic Train is still available A kid-friendly Family Picnic Train will also run in 2022 on Aug 20. Check-in/boarding will be at 5 p.m. with a 5:30 p.m. departure, returning at 7 p.m. The Picnic Train includes a stop at Byrnes Park, so kids can enjoy the playground equipment while the train crew is preparing for the return trip and dessert!

The cost for the Picnic Trains is $39 per person, including all beef hot dogs with assorted toppings, served with kettle crunch potato chips, pickles and fresh fruit. Dessert is chocolate brownies. The cost includes bottomless soda and gratuity. Sales tax is not included. Restrooms are available on board.

You may also wish to consider our other familyfriendly dining events, including the Burger Train and the “That’s Amore” pasta train.

Charter your own train!

The East Troy Railroad Museum offers private charters designed to meet your specific needs, from business lunches to anniversary parties.

Chartered trips may make stopovers with advanced planning. There are two parks along our route, plus the Elegant Farmer. You can customize your event by providing live entertainment, bringing your own special food,

adding displays, giving business presentations, or just riding the rails.

You can also choose from several luncheon or dinner menus developed specifically for our Charter Services.

For special occasions, table arrangements may be reconfigured to accommodate musicians, wedding cakes, displays, or anything else you want. Just give us a call to work out the details.

The railroad operates charters from mid-May through October and they may be arranged for any day of the week. Charters can be from 30 minutes to two hours in length and can be extended for an additional charge.

Docents aboard each train will also share the history of the railroad.

Why not join our volunteer family?

For people who volunteer at the East Troy Railroad Museum, it feels like you become part of a second family. Only this family runs a railroad. And we need every member of the family to do his or her part to make it a smooth-running operation. It is challenging, it is fun, it is educational and you know your work is appreciated.

Some volunteers can only give a couple of days a month and others may put in 150 days a year. Some want to work in areas where they bring experience and are comfortable with the tasks. Others want to be challenged by learning new skills and look forward to doing something completely different than what they do in their “day jobs.”

The variety of tasks needed to operate a railroad and museum give people plenty of options. So let us know what interests you. From selling merchandise in the gift shop to being a motorman (or woman) on our trains, there are many different kinds of people using many different kinds of skills here.

What we all have in common, though, is a desire to see things happen.

This is the motivation that brings us out to the line and keeps us coming back regularly. We all know that whatever our contributions, they are needed to keep this historic line alive and growing.

Some of us will be singled out for recognition in the volunteer events throughout the year, but any of us would quickly tell you that we don’t do it for the cheers of our peers.

We get all the gratification we need by simply accomplishing something we believe to be important and worthwhile.

We invite you to stop on out and visit the museum to talk with one or more of the volunteers about what it’s like to work here.

Volunteer of the Year – Sue Budzien The East Troy Railroad Museum would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of its many volunteers.

Each year at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, one devoted volunteer is recognized with our “Volunteer of the Year” award. This recognition is given to one truly outstanding and inspiring volunteer who has taken a leadership role to preserve and enhance the museum while encouraging others to do the same.

The 2021 award went to Sue Budzien, who has many roles, including running the depot and gift shop, cleaning our dining cars, working as a server on practically every dinner train, and filling in wherever needed to keep the railroad running smoothly.

Budzien got her first introduction to the East Troy Railroad when she attended a “Business After Five” event sponsored by the Mukwonago Chamber of Commerce.

“Living in East Troy I always knew about the railroad,” says Budzien. “But the Business After Five event was when I first thought about getting more involved through volunteering.”

Now she has been volunteering for more than 7 years and is a key part of the successful operation of the railroad.

“After the Business After Five event Sue asked me if she could reframe a dinner train display in our depot,” says Ryan Jonas, President of the East Troy Railroad Museum. “It started a conversation that led to her becoming a volunteer – and that has been a very good thing for us ever since.”

In her “day job,” Budzien works in the Subrogation Department as an Operations Specialist at Travelers Insurance in Brookfield. She also owns her own business, “Quality Custom Framing” in East Troy, where she creates custom framed pictures for her customers that can be passed down from generation to generation. She mounted and framed many of the photos seen in the East Troy Depot.

Budzien says she really enjoys working on the Dinner Trains, “I just enjoy being with people, serving a great meal, and creating amazing memories for people.”

History of the ELEGANT FARMER Everyone who rides on the East Troy Electric Railroad knows about the Elegant Farmer station stop.

It’s been a popular destination for our passengers since the railroad started running historic trolleys in 1972. What you may not know is the history of the Elegant Farmer, which goes back much further.

The Elegant Farmer began back in 1946 as a family dairy farm owned and operated by brothers Dave and Elmer Scheel. In addition to overseeing a herd of 50 Guernsey cattle, they sold their surplus fruits and vegetables on the busy corner of their farm property at Highway ES and J in Mukwonago. Business was brisk and a larger, permanent year-round roadside market was built in the early 50s.

By 1958, the brothers decided to concentrate solely on their newly named Davelmer Market, and they sold the dairy herd. To encourage families to visit, the brothers pioneered the concept of pick-yourown strawberries on the 65-acre farm. In 1970, Elmer’s son Dan Scheel and his wife Karen took over the business and re-named it “The Elegant Farmer.”

Over the next 26 years, The Elegant Farmer expanded its business by selling locally grown fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, introducing its famed

Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag and other baked goods leading to spectacular growth in the Farm Bakery, accompanied with the development of its Farm Kitchen, Deli and Produce sections. The pick-your-own selection currently includes apples, pumpkins, and squash.

With former owner Farmer Dan Scheel’s blessing, The Elegant Farmer passed to its third generation of owners in 2005 as longtime employees, John Bauer and Keith Schmidt took over the helm, along with John’s brother, Mike Bauer. Nowadays, this dynamic trio continues to offer the quality and traditions that The Elegant Farmer has been known for since the beginning: small town charm, simply the best foods, and loyal customer relationships.

SANTA TRAIN opens holiday season in style

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in East Troy aboard the East Troy Electric Railroad Santa Train to kickoff the holiday season. After traveling from Mukwonago on the Santa Train, the Clauses greet children in the downtown square in East Troy before the Bob Barutha Memorial Christmas Tree is lit for the season.

Presented by the East Troy Electric Railroad in conjunction with the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, the beautifully lit four-car train travels down the centuryold interurban trolley line between Mukwonago and East Troy.

Spectators can catch a glimpse of Santa along Highway ES. The train will stop briefly at the following crossings: • 5:05 p.m., train departs at The Elegant Farmer; • 5:25 p.m., Army Lake Road – Army Lake Camp; • 5:56 p.m., St. Peter’s Road; • 6:13 p.m., Byrnes Street;

• 6:25 p.m., Division Street; • 6:30 p.m., Santa arrives on Village Square via East Troy Fire Department truck.

Santa on the Square In anticipation of Santa’s arrival, festivities on the East Troy Village Square begin around 6 p.m. with concessions and a Christmas carol singalong. The East Troy Lioness Club offers refreshments in the warmth of the Lions Lodge beginning at 5 p.m.

The East Troy Holiday Marketplace, featuring vendors offering a variety of holiday gift items and entertainment inside Ivan’s Backstage on the square, is also part of the holiday happenings.

Midnight Magic

Midnight Magic, sponsored by the Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce also takes place the same day as the Santa Train. The communitywide event runs from 10 a.m. until midnight.

The event also offers pictures with Santa, other holidaysthemed attractions and events, a marketplace/craft fair with more than 100 vendors, carriage rides, Christmas Parade, live nativity scene and fireworks.

How Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor came to East Troy

Visitors to the East Troy Railroad Museum and Depot often enjoy a treat from Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor. The old-fashioned, drugstore/ soda fountain-like atmosphere charms many.

John Lauber grew up in Milwaukee in the 1950s and 1960s, at a time when there were still many 1930s vintage drugstore soda fountains in operation, especially in the older parts of the city where his grandparents lived. He enjoyed stepping into these drugstores for an ice cream soda, hot fudge sundae or Green River.

In 1969 his great Uncle, Alfred Meyer died, and John received a number of soda fountain items from Meyer’s Pharmacy – his uncle’s store.

In addition to enjoying old-time soda fountains, John liked electric trolleys and had been a founding member of The Wisconsin Electric Railway Historical Society, which moved its collection of old trolleys to East Troy in 1972. The society had begun operating a museum and offering trolley rides on the weekends.

In 1973, John was driving down Burleigh Street and saw people carrying boxes out of Rilling’s Drug Store, throwing them into a dumpster. When he stopped to find out what was going on, he found that Mr. Rilling had suffered a stroke and his family was closing – and emptying – the store. John made an offer on the store fixtures and found himself the owner of an original 1930’s drugstore, without a home.

Meanwhile, back in East Troy, John had noticed a vacant building right across the tracks from the East Troy Depot. He arranged to rent the building from Equity Co-op, re-assembled the drug store fixtures in the new location, and opened Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor in 1974.

Since then, for 48 years, Lauber’s has been providing visitors with a truly authentic 1930s soda fountain experience. It has always been John’s goal to make entering Lauber’s just like going into the corner drug store 90 years ago.

The worn hardwood floor, tongue and groove ceiling and vintage light fixtures hanging from chains carry you back to the 1930s. Original equipment, including malt mixers, dispensers, scoops, and other items from the 1930s and 1940s were acquired and continue to be used in making ice cream treats today.

Vintage style sundae dishes and glassware are used to serve treats to your table.

The old cabinets around the store, which once contained pharmaceuticals, now hold an array of ice cream collectables: mixers, scoops, dispensers, and vintage advertising. Others still hold vintage drug store items and packaging. The grocery section, from a store at 16th and Mitchell, has a display of grocery items and hosts a large candy counter using vintage containers to display the candy. A 1950 Seeburg jukebox plays hits from the 1920s to the 1950s.

John wants everyone to know that Lauber’s is not self-service and it is not fast food. He asks you to allow enough time to sit back and enjoy the experience, not just the ice cream.

East Troy Railroad awarded $100,000 grant Money to help fund new educational displays and museum updates

The East Troy Railroad Museum will receive $100,000 from the We Energies Foundation over the next five years. The money will fund new energy experience interactive education displays at the museum with the theme: Generating Green Electricity for Modern Mobility.

The funding will also improve the visitor experience by supporting new heating and cooling systems in the depot, which houses educational displays and historic electrical equipment and controls. The depot was built in 1910 as a substation for the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company, which is now known as We Energies.

“We are very grateful for the generous contribution to support our educational

mission,” said Ryan Jonas, president of the museum. “We Energies and the We Energies Foundation have been strong supporters of the East Troy Railroad Museum for more than 40 years. These new contributions will allow us to make significant improvements in our programs and our facility.”

“We are making this contribution because we believe that working together, we can create a brighter future for the communities we serve,” said Beth Straka, vice president of the We Energies Foundation. “Electricity powered the railroad to East Troy in 1907 and electricity is an even bigger part of today’s transportation future. We are glad to partner with the East Troy Railroad to tell that story.”

The East Troy Railroad Museum operates regular 14-mile round trip excursions from its historic East Troy depot and museum to Indianhead Park in Mukwonago, with a stop at the Elegant Farmer store and deli.

The non-profit railroad is operated and

managed by more than 130 volunteers dedicated to engaging visitors in the heritage of electric interurban railways and trolley systems.

Ride the rails to Santa’s Workshop

Christmas Trains at the East Troy Railroad Museum run Saturdays and Sundays from the last weekend in November to the weekend before Christmas.

The fun, family-friendly rides take passengers from the East Troy Depot at 2002 Church St., East Troy, to Santa’s Workshop at the Elegant Farmer and back. The rides are slightly less than two hours per round-trip and they include a visit with Santa, where families

and children can have their photos taken.

Trains depart every hour and a half from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The railroad also offers evening Christmas Trains on Fridays and Saturdays.

Tickets go on sale in the fall and sell out fast.

Lions Fourth of July Celebration July 1-3
