L

ike almost any other museum, the East Troy Railroad Museum exists because of its volunteers.

The variety of tasks in the operation of a museum is amazingly wide.

From answering the telephone to operating trains, many different kinds of people using many different kinds of skills come into play.

What all of them have in common, though, is a desire to see things happen. This is the basis of the motivation that brings them out to the line and keeps them coming back regularly. They all know that whatever their time contribution, it’s needed to keep the line alive and growing.

Some view their volunteer time as an opportunity to expand their skills and life experience.

Many arrive with a skillset that they expect to use, and instead wind up assisting less experienced workers while broadening their own skills in other fields.

Every one knows that they are doing important work, keeping this valuable piece of history alive. All have time constraints, of course; not every volunteer can put in 150 days a year (as some

of the retired ones may).

Some can only find time for one day a month.

But all like the work. It is involving, challenging, and very satisfying.

There are ways individuals are singled out for recognition in the volunteer events throughout the year, but any one of the honorees would quickly tell you that they don’t do it for the cheers of their peers. They get all the gratification they need by simply accomplishing something they know is important.

That’s how it is. People can see the need, and find it interesting, even fun, to answer the call. On just about any weekend, stop on out and visit the museum. Talk to one of the volunteers. You too have a skill that can be put to good use, and some interesting, involving, and rewarding task awaits you.

The East Troy Railroad Museum would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of its many volunteers.

Each year at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Lunch, one devoted volunteer is recognized with our “Volunteer of the Year” award. This recognition is given to one truly outstanding and inspiring volunteer who has taken a leadership role to preserve and enhance the museum while encouraging others to do the same.

The 2016 award went to Dustin Robinson, who wears many hats on the railroad, and who is always hard at work on one or more projects. He spends most weekends in the East Troy Trolley barn on maintenance and repair tasks that keep our historic equipment running smoothly. An electrician on his day job, Dustin’s skills come in handy whether he is working with 600 volts or on electronics and computer systems. Dustin has been a volunteer for six years.

“There are two reasons I volunteer at the railroad,” said Robinson. “First, for the preservation of history; and second, to see our guests’ smiling faces now and in the future. There’s a guy who comes out here every two years. He used to come here when he was a kid. He loves coming back here. And I love to see the smile on his face when he does.”

In addition to his maintenance tasks, Dustin spends quite a bit of time training and certifying new motormen during the operating season. This helps assure that we have a reliable team ready to operate our trains in a safe manner.

“The East Troy Railroad is extremely grateful for volunteers like Dustin Robinson,” Railroad Museum President Ryan Jonas said. “He was chosen for this award because our other volunteers recognize the time and expertise that he brings to our operation.”

Ribbon cutting draws a big crowd at new maintenance facility More than 150 people came out for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new Edwin H. Weig Maintenance Facility, held on July 25, 2016. The new 128-foot by 56-foot facility is across Highway J from the Elegant Farmer.

The crowd enjoyed good weather, cake, apple pie, and tours of the new facility.

“It was a great day at the East Troy Railroad,” museum President Ryan Jonas said.

“And it was just the kickoff for a lot of activity that has continued at the facility since that day. As we had hoped, a clean, heated, indoor environment brought many volunteers out during the winter months to do needed maintenance and repairs on our cars.”

The $700,000 project took two years from the initial planning phase to completion.

The volunteer project manager was John Jonas and the builder was Walters Buildings of Allenton, Wis. Volkmann Railroad Builders of Menomonee Falls donated time and materials to

complete the new track into the facility.

Volunteers at the East Troy Railroad moved tools and equipment into the facility over a period of months, getting it ready for the heavy maintenance activities that now take place there.

Volunteer Joe Buerger manages the 7,000 square foot facility, and volunteer Ron Jonas, as chief mechanical officer, keeps all

the work moving forward and prioritizes the projects.

A wood shop and metal shop can be individually isolated and heated, so that the entire facility does not have to be heated when only one or two people are working.

“Our historic trolley, interturban and elevated rail cars came to us with millions of miles on them,” Jonas said, “and some of them are over 100 years old. Electric, wood

and metal repairs are often required to keep these fine cars running down the track.”

East Troy Railroad releases 2017 LINEUP of EVENTS

Celebrating 110 years of riding the rails through Southeast Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine countryside, the East Troy Railroad has planned a number of special events for the upcoming season showcasing its stable of interurban rail treasures.

The railroad will again be offering pizza and dinner train service allowing guests of all ages to enjoy dining by rail on former coaches of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad.

A variety of antique trolleys and interurban coaches that once whisked passengers from major cities to surrounding towns and nearby summer retreats will be featured during the season, including Chicago’s workhorse “L” cars that debuted in the 1920s, a rare trolley built for the Milwaukee Transport Company in 1920 and a lavish interurban trolley from 1908 originally manufactured for the Sheboygan Light Power & Railway. The 2017 summer events calendar includes:

Bunny Train

April 8, 9 and 15 Join us for family fun aboard the East Troy Bunny Train! The ride is a ten-mile round trip starting at the East Troy Depot (2002 Church St., East Troy, Wis.). Board our heated train where kids can participate in Easter themed activities during the ride to the Elegant Farmer.

Enjoy bunny displays by local 4-H Students and treats at the Elegant Farmer.

Railfan Day/Railfest

June 24 On Railfan Day we take all of our equipment out of the barn and put it on display.

And you can ride a different rail car on each trip of the day.

New for this year, we are also offering fun family activities like face painting, model railroad car building, tours of our maintenance facility, speeder rides on our industrial spur, miniature train rides and demonstrations of how we do track repairs.

Chicago Day

Night Photo Shoot

September 16 For the second year we are offering a Night Photo Shoot for photographers who enjoy trains and who also enjoy the unique photos that result from shooting in low light. We will stage our historic railcars and a couple of period automobiles in a setting sure to produce some outstanding photos. This event is limited to 30 participants.

Milwaukee Day

September 23 Home of the last streetcar built by The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company still in operation, the East Troy Railroad will celebrate Milwaukee’s rich railcar history during Milwaukee Day Saturday, Sept. 23. Joining the 1920 built streetcar, which once whisked residents from the greater Milwaukee area to the ballpark and shopping centers, is a 1907 line car equipped to respond to trolley emergencies.

Also featured during the weekend is L8, a stately locomotive built in 1935 that once served as a secondary work car called on to help in track

maintenance and brush cutting, as well as serving as a yard goat and backup locomotive.

Christmas Parade Train

December 2 Special heated passenger trolleys will pick up riders from Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago and transport them behind the East Troy Railroad’s Santa Train to the Division Street crossing in East Troy. Riders will be able to walk to the East Troy Village Square for the community Christmas tree lighting. The trolley will leave at 8 p.m. from the East Troy Depot to take riders back to Elegant Farmer.

Tickets can be purchased from either the East Troy or Mukwonago Chambers of Commerce.

Christmas Trains

November 25 and 26 December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 Our magical ride will take you a half hour from our East Troy Depot, 2002 Church St., East Troy, to Santa’s workshop located at the Elegant Farmer.

Here children can visit Santa and get a photo taken with the jolly elf himself! Santa’s workshop wouldn’t be complete without some hot chocolate and cookies to enjoy!

Pizza Trains return for another run Enjoy a family fun night out for pizza and bottomless soda on a train! Our popular Pizza Trains are back, but be sure to get your reservations in early because they are popular. There will be four Pizza Trains this season between May 13 and August 19.

Boarding is at the East Troy Depot at 2002 Church Street. The train takes a leisurely trip to Byrnes Park where guests are welcome to disembark from the train and take advantage of the park’s open green space and play equipment.

Bringing Car 33 Back to Life In time for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service

or the second year in a row, volunteers at the East Troy Railroad Museum delivered a restored Chicago, South Shore & South Bend car to the operating roster in East Troy.

The motivation for the herculean efforts in 2016 had to do with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, also in 2016.

Five of the East Troy Railroad Museum’s South Shore cars – including Car 33 – came to the railroad as a gift from the National Park Service at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. When the original 1920’s era cars were replaced by new equipment in 1982 and 1983, the Congressman serving Northern Indiana worked to pass a bill to transfer the retired cars to the ownership of the National Park Service. The hope was to establish a museum at Indiana Dunes that would feature some of the old cars, while telling the history of the South Shore Line. Four of the stops on the South Shore line are at stations in or nearby the Indiana Dunes.

Unfortunately, the funding to establish the museum never materialized. So the rangers at Indiana Dunes began to approach various historical societies and tourist railroads about taking the historic cars so they could be preserved elsewhere.

When the East Troy Railroad Museum took delivery of five of the cars in 2010, the railroad pledged that at least one of the cars would be ready to help the National Park Service celebrate its 100th anniversary.

But by January of 2016, precious little

progress had been made toward fulfilling that pledge. With only six months remaining until Chicago Day – the day that made the most sense for a celebration – somebody needed to step up to make it happen. That somebody was Mike Jaehn.

Jaehn said he was motivated by the chance to make even a small contribution toward the restoration of this historic railcar.

“It was an honor to be involved,” he said.

“It’s a piece of history which otherwise might have been lost.”

Jaehn started out by preparing a list of tasks necessary to complete the restoration.

Then he prioritized the tasks and sourced as many parts as possible ahead of time, so that other volunteers could see what needed to be done and had the supplies to keep the project moving forward.

The task list started out with nearly 150 items, but ballooned to over 175 before the project was finished. More than 25 volunteers put in hundreds of hours, including many who worked late into the evening multiple weekends in a row. Some volunteers even came to work on the car on weeknights after their day jobs.

The interior of Car 33 had been cosmetically restored in preparation for the proposed museum at Indiana Dunes, and the work had been done beautifully. But the car was not expected to operate again. So while the car looked pretty good inside, many of the mechanical and electric systems had been neglected or damaged during the interior restoration.

For instance, a 120-volt lighting and

electrical system had been installed inside the car, replacing wiring and fixtures designed to work with the 1,500-volt power provided by the South Shore’s overhead catenary.

In the process, many electrical cables had simply been cut or bypassed, including the Multiple Unit (MU) control cables that allow two or more South Shore cars to be run together.

Because so much wiring had been damaged or cut, volunteers in East Troy first had to run Car 33 up onto rubber mats to isolate it electrically from the track in order to figure out which wires went where – and which could be removed. Volunteers like Ryan Barry, Russell Griswold and Dustin Robinson spent many hours poring over 90-year-old wiring diagrams to figure out how to get all the systems back together again.

It was late May before the wiring and electrical tasks were complete. Those tasks had included cleaning and rebuilding the control stands at both ends of the car, reinstalling the fuse banks, and cleaning and refinishing the cab switches and cabinet.

Some of the hardest wiring work had to be done on the ground underneath the car, in a car barn that was not heated. The East Troy Railroad’s new maintenance facility was under construction, but it would not be available for move-in until mid-July.

Facing a challenge Wiring was one of the most challenging of many problems.

“It seemed like every time we turned around there was something new and unexpected to deal with,” said Jaehn. “Both brake stands had to be sent out for repair, and we needed to find a new 600-volt compressor.”

Jaehn said the pressure built toward the end of the project, because the roof needed to be replaced and there was quite a bit of graffiti on one side of the car. Replacing the roof was not an easy task, because the South Shore line uses pantographs to connect to the overhead trolley wire. The pantograph on Car 33 still needed to be removed and replaced by two new trolley poles so that the car could operate on the East Troy Railroad. There were also 18 roof vents to remove and each vent had 36 screws.

“We also knew there were some places where the wood decking and trim was rotten, but we didn’t know how bad it would be until we got everything off the old roof and removed the canvas,” said Jaehn. “It turned out that the wood deck was in pretty good shape and the rotted spots were repaired fairly quickly.”

Fred Biederman, who did most of the deck repairs, said he had to replace about half of the trim – also called the “nail board” – fashioning new poplar boards to match the existing ones. The trim was screwed to the steel structure of the car using machine bolts. So a big part of the job was getting all the old machine bolts out, and drilling and re-tapping the ones that could not be

(Continued from page 5) removed. Biederman also marked the steel structure below the roof deck so that a new catwalk could be installed once the roof was finished.

A lost art?

Installing a new canvas roof is a bit of a lost art, but the East Troy Railroad Museum has two experienced volunteers – Fred Biederman and Skip Lichter – who are trying to teach the rest of the crew how to do it.

With the catenary, roof vents and catwalk removed – and every rotted section of deck and trim repaired – the crew sanded the deck.

The sanding helps find the remaining tacks and staples left from the old roof, assuring that the new canvas is not damaged when it is placed on the roof. Next, the team stapled butcher paper to the whole roof. The butcher paper assures that the new canvas can move freely when it is placed and stretched.

Then the new canvas was positioned on the roof and coated with two applications of a special roof stain. The purpose of the stain is to surround all the canvas fibers so that they do not deteriorate when exposed to the

sun and the elements. Wooden clamps were fastened to the canvas at both ends of the car and attached to turnbuckles, to help stretch the canvas.

After allowing the canvas to stretch for about a week, and carefully adjusting the turnbuckles every couple of days, the canvas was flipped over and the team began stapling the new canvas to the “nail boards.” Working from the center of the car, the canvas is stretched and attached on both sides at the same time, gradually working toward the ends of the car. Once the canvas had been attached, the team applied five coats of stain, waiting for the coats to dry in between applications.

By this time it was mid-June. “It was probably at least 100 degrees in the barn, and the stain puts off some pretty strong fumes,” said Jaehn. “We were all a bit loopy.”

When the canvas was dry, Biederman began making and attaching supports for the new catwalk, using the markings made earlier to identify the location of the structure beneath the roof deck. New supports were fashioned from oak, using some of the old roof supports as templates.

Getting good news “The best news of the whole project was the day we found out that the traction motors worked,” said Jaehn. “Now we had hope that we might just be able to make the deadline.”

The trolley poles needed to be installed and wired and there were a lot of smaller tasks being tended to: period headlights needed to be found and rebuilt, authenticlooking destination signs needed to be designed, new air horn valves needed to be found and installed, some window glass needed to be replaced, and new doors and historically-correct door handles needed to be installed.

One week before Chicago Day, when the National Park Service Rangers would be there for the dedication, Car 33 went on its first “road test.” Things went well, but a few more tasks were added to the list.

Then, just two days before the dedication, Jaehn began to tackle the side of the car covered in graffiti. He removed as much graffiti as possible with a power sander and then began painting over the damaged spots.

But the first paint formulation did not cover well. On Friday morning – with just one more day before the dedication – Jaehn went back for a second try with a new paint mixture. It covered the damage well and it matched the existing color perfectly.

When the National Park Rangers, led by Judy Collins, boarded the car late that Friday afternoon, they couldn’t have been happier.

According to Jaehn, there may have been a few tears shed. An historic rail car nearly lost to history was back – and back to its former glory.

Early on Saturday, July 16th, Car 33 was rechristened as the “Indiana Dunes” and rolled through a ceremonial banner stretched across the tracks opposite the East Troy depot – and passengers boarded the car for its first revenue run in more than 30 years.

The dedication of Car 33 was a great way to participate in the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service. And the event and participation of the rangers was a nice reward for the many individuals who did their part to bring this piece of history back to life.

Many would echo Mike Jaehn’s comment: “It was an honor to be involved.”

Fine dining on the East Troy Railroad Since 1992, the East Troy Railroad Museum has been proud to offer dinner train service to guests from around the world.

Using two retired South Shore cars built in 1927, our volunteers remodeled these two cars, stripping chairs out, installing bars and a lot of custom mahogany woodwork.

Both cars are decorated in the “art deco” style with Car 24 displaying more greens and Car 25 displaying more pinks.

These cars were also outfitted with new picture windows and upgraded air conditioning systems. Finally, it was time to name our two diners and what better names

than the “Ravenswood” and “Beverly Shores”, two stations along the South Shore line, where these two cars originated.

Our Dinner Train takes riders on a two-hour journey on our picturesque line. Salads and appetizers are preset on tables as guests board the train.

After about a half hour, the train makes a brief pause as the main course arrives on tables.

The Dinner Train travels beyond the Elegant Farmer stop to the shore of Lower Phantom Lake. Here, passengers hear a brief speech about the history of the line, the cars they are riding in and of course, the famous legend of Lower Phantom Lake!

Sunsets can also be viewed from this spot over the lake.

If you plan on booking a ticket on our dinner train, make sure to bring your cameras as the landscape and atmosphere provide plenty of Kodak Moments! It is also not uncommon to see swans on the lake along with other birds.

After visiting the lake, our train pulls across Highway ES and into Indianhead Park.

Here, guests are offered the chance to get off the train to stretch their legs, get some pictures and enjoy the park.

After 15 minutes pass, we head back to East Troy with dessert and after dinner drinks.

Since we are in Wisconsin, after all, bar service is available!

A common question we have received in the past is; “Can we bring our young child on the Dinner Train?”

Our Dinner Trains are really designed for adults, but we have designed our Pizza Trains to be perfect for families with children.

The volunteers really had fun designing what the pizza train experience would look like. Using the same dinner trains, red-and-whitecheckered tablecloths are used versus the usual white linen for regular trains.

Coloring books and crayons are available for keeping everyone entertained during the trip. Unlike the Dinner Train, we stop at Byrnes Park, which has a wonderful green space and playground.

Here, energy can be “burnt off” while those who would like to remain on the train are welcome to do so.

The trip totals about an hour and thirty minutes and includes a coupon for a scoop of ice cream from J. Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor located directly across the tracks from our Depot in East Troy.

Tickets include your choice of pizza, garlic bread and bottomless soda. Advance reservations are required.

The railroad operates charters from mid-May through October and may be arranged for any day of the week. Charters are two hours in length but can be extended for an additional charge. Docents aboard each train will also share the history of the railroad.
