Twin Lakes, Wisconsin

he Village of Twin Lakes is located in the Southeastern corner of Wisconsin in Kenosha County. Currently, Twin Lakes has a full-time population of 6,041 and another one-third more of part-time residents. Twin Lakes offers that small-town charm less than 70 miles from Chicago, Milwaukee and Kenosha. Its location offers quick, easy access to two international airports and interstate transportation. In Twin Lakes we have a saying: “Close to everything, but away from it all.” With nearly 1000 acres of water the Twin Lakes, Mary and Elizabeth, make the area a popular destination offering swimming, boating, and fishing. Five major and several smaller parks offer beaches, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, skateboarding, walking trails, baseball diamonds, soccer/ football field, sledding hills and pickleball. The Twin Lakes Chamber Office is located in the red railroad depot replica next to the Caboose at 349 E. Main St. in downtown Twin Lakes. The railroad design pays homage to the history of the area. Large blocks of ice were harvested from the

lakes and shipped via railroad to Chicago during the summer, before refrigeration became commonplace. The Chamber building was ready for use in June of 1998. The arrival, in June of 1999, of the Chicago Northwestern Caboose TL-699 was arranged for by resident and Chamber member Bill Porps. The Twin Lakes Area Chamber & Business Association proudly hosts several community events each year. April 15 brings the Tax Day Raffle with a chance to win a generous grand prize. Proceeds benefit the fireworks, education and other community projects. a

he Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association, Inc. was created in 1991 when two organizations, the Twin Lakes Businessmen’s Association, established 1954 and the Twin Lakes Chamber of Commerce, established 1971 were merged to better serve the community. In 1997, the Association expanded its services to surrounding communities not already covered by a Chamber or like organization. One of the goals of the Chamber is getting people together in a face-to-face setting to build business relationships and make new business contacts. Twin Lakes Area Chamber & Business Association, Inc. is a proud supporter of the Twin Lakes Chamber Foundation, Inc. dedicated to providing scholarships to high

school seniors in the Twin Lakes area. Chamber membership is open to all residents and businesses in and around our service area. Looking Back at the History of Twin Lakes In 1833, after the Native American Indians were moved to reservations, settlers Jonathan Imeson and his wife Mary Wray staked a claim in an area later known as English Prairie on the southern tip of Lake Elizabeth. The couple would have eight children. Their son Robert was the first child born in the county and their twin daughters Mary and Elizabeth were the first twins born on the Prairie. The lakes, formerly called Nippersink Lakes, were named after the twin girls and soon the area was referred to as Twin Lakes. The railroad was a key factor in the development of Twin Lakes. The biggest customers of the railroad were the icehouses and farmers. Haegles’ icehouse was started on Lake Elizabeth in the late 1850s and several more soon followed. Ice was harvested in large blocks and stored for use in the summer. It was then sent by rails to Chicago to keep food and beverages cool during the hot summer months before refrigeration became commonplace. The railroad allowed farmers to ship food and milk to the city. The railroad brought people, mail, and supplies to Twin Lakes. By

the 1880s a depot was erected just a short distance from Lake Mary near the center of the village. Estates, resorts, taverns and The Twin Lakes Ballroom, the largest ballroom in Wisconsin, made Twin Lakes a vacation destination by the turn of the century. The Twin Lakes Ballroom, later called the Wonder Bar, was special because most of the Big Bands played there. Glen Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Dorothy Lamour and the Andrew Sisters all performed in the Ballroom. Lawrence Welk and his new wife Fern lived in a little room in the Twin Lakes Ballroom for the summer of 1931 when they came to Twin Lakes with a new band. By 1937, Twin Lakes was incorporated as a village, formed its own government

Mary Wray, a native of England, was born June 15, 1816. She came to America in 1833 and resided in what was to become known as “English Prairie.” In 1837 she was married to Jonathan Imeson, also an early settler on the prairie. Their son Robert was the firstborn son in the county. There were eight children in all, including the first set of twins born on the prairie. The girls were baptized Mary and Elizabeth. Both lakes were named after these girls.

Restaurants, gas stations and stores were established as the village began to grow. “Fever Lake,” a scary movie starring Mario Lopez, Corey Haim and Bo Hopkins was filmed in Twin Lakes in 1996. Today the village has grown to a population of more than 6,000 full-time and about onethird more part-time residents.

From Feb. 1 to April 15, the Twin Lakes Area Chamber & Business Association will be selling raffle tickets to help fund the annual fireworks display. Parks • Public Parks Lance Park downtown Twin Lakes was built on land donated to the Village by the Lance Family around 1960. Located at 55 Lance Dr., the park contains basketball hoops, beach and Boat Launch. There is a fishing pier that is Handicap Accessible at the bottom of a downhill ramp. Lance Park also has a boat launch available for a fee. Lance Park is the sight of the Aquanut Water Ski Amphitheater with a small stage. Boat launches are also available on Lake Elizabeth at Lake Elizabeth Marina and on Musial Road. Legion Park located on Legion Drive contains a basketball court, baseball diamonds, skateboard park and playground equipment

and Recreation and restrooms. Pickleball has now been added at Legion Park. Millennium Park, on Stateline Road and Richmond Park Drive, is Twin Lakes newest park containing a soccer/ football field, pavilion, walking trails, playground equipment, sledding hill and a restroom. Mueller Park located off Sunset Court and Hunt Ave. offers playground equipment, and sledding. West Side Park located off Spiegelhoff Road contains a baseball diamond, basketball court, tennis courts, playground equipment, a place for sledding and restrooms. Other parks include Arrowhead Park, Sunset Beach Park, Lucille Beach Park and Musial Road Park.

• Public Beaches The Public Beach on Lake Mary is located at Lance Park down town Twin Lakes. Public beaches on Lake Elizabeth are located on Musial Road, Sunset Drive, and Lucille Avenue.

The Aquanut Water Ski Show is held every Wednesday and Saturday evening, Memorial Day thru Labor Day (except during competitions) at 6 p.m. in Lance Park Twin Lakes. Be enthralled by an award winning waterski show featuring four high pyramids, barefoot skiing, ballet lines and more. Free family entertainment. Enjoy movies under the stars at Lance Park. Movies will be held on select Fridays between Labor Day and Memorial Day at the Lance Park Amphitheater starting at dusk. All the movies are G or PG rated. Bring a chair and blanket or drive up in your

boat to watch a free movie. The 2020 dates and movie titles will be released in the spring. Check the Village of Twin Lakes website for the dates and movie titles. Sixth annual Shamrock N Run, 5k Family Fun Run/Walk will be at Twin Lakes Country Club on March 14. Race starts at 10 a.m. with an after party 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds benefit Randall Consolidated School PTC Programming and Teacher Wish Lists. Twin Lakes is well known as the location of Country Thunder Music Festival. This four-day (July 16 to 19) music festival on the border of the village welcomes up to 100,000 in attendance. Country

Thunder brings the hottest acts and fresh new faces, this year featuring Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, Kane Brown, Dustin Lynch and more. Town of Randall L

ocated in the Southwest corner of Kenosha County, surrounding Twin Lakes, the Town of Randall was formed when Kenosha County was created from a much larger Racine County in 1850. The boundaries were determined by splitting the Town of Wheatland in half. The town was named for the then seated Governor, Alexander Randall. Today the Town of Randall is home for about 3,184 residents. The Town

Board of Randall meets on the second and fourth Thursday each month at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, 34530 Bassett Rd., Bassett, WI. For more information, call 262-877-2165. Randall is home to the Warren Close Bark Park located at KD Park, 35610 89th St., Twin Lakes. The Dog park, is part of Kenosha County Dog Parks, is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and abides by the Kenosha Dog Park rules, available on their website. KD Park also includes hiking trails, fishing and swimming.

Randall Fire Department housed in two locations, Powers Lake and Bassett, has nearly 40 members. In addition to Firefighters, Randall has a First Responder Unit, Cadet Squad and Auxiliary. In operation since 1985, Randall Fire Department has two engines, a Ladder, a Tender, a Grass Rig and two Utility Pickup trucks and an Off Road UTV. Randall Fire Department hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt, Craft Fair and Breakfast with Santa. New members are always welcome.

Established in 1937, The Twin Lakes Police Department polices the Village 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Currently, there are thirteen full-time police officers, eight part-time police officers, five full-time dispatchers, four part-time dispatchers and eight seasonal water patrol officers. The police department utilizes marked squad cars, motorcycles, and bicycles to patrol the Village. In 2017, the Twin Lakes Police Department developed its first ever K-9 police officer program. Funds for the purchase of a K-9, equipment, and training were raised 100% through community donations. In October, the police department welcomed K-9 Rex to the police force. Annually, the police department hosts National Night Out the first Tuesday in August and coordinates Shop with a Hero each December. These are two events where Twin Lakes Police Officers give back to the community they serve by helping those in need and interacting with our citizens. The police department lobby is open to

the public 24 hours a day. There is a prescription medication drop-off box located in the lobby for citizens to drop off any expired or unused prescription medication. Medication should be the original bottle or packaging when disposed. The department goals are to respect and preserve life and property. Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1929 with a staff of over 20 volunteers and was incorporated in 1941. The Twin Lakes Rescue Squad was formed in 1949. The all-volunteer department has 57 members with at least 50 of those active in one capacity or another. The current Fire Chief is Stan Clause Jr. The department uses and maintains nine vehicles, three of which are ambulances a

and a boat. Thanks to the Village of Twin Lakes, the department took possession of a new Pierce Engine this year replacing the 1993 Darley Engine. Now licensed as EMTs or Advanced EMTs, the department responds to an average of 160 fire calls per year and 900 EMS calls per year covering Twin Lakes and all of Randall and Wheatland. The department participates in National Night Out in August and Shop with a Hero in December. Members go to Lakewood and Randall School to do Fire Prevention programs during Fire Prevention month in October. The first Saturday in December, the department hosts Santa at the Fire Station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Santa is transported by Fire Truck from the Village Tree Lighting Ceremony in the park on Dec. 4 to the Trees on Parade event at St. Johnâ€™s Community Center. Twin Lakes Seniors Club The 130-member strong Twin Lakes Seniors Club is open to all seniors over the age of 55. The club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Calvary United Church of Christ, 1511 Wilmot Ave. in Twin Lakes. Members are from Twin Lakes and the surrounding areas including northern Illinois. Seniors arrive early to socialize and have coffee and cake with the meeting beginning at noon. The members play bingo after the meetings. Monthly trips to casinos, plays, restaurants and more are taken from March through November. Dues are $10 per year, trips are extra. The third annual Scarecrow contest will be included in the New Harvest Fest Event on Sept. 26 in the parking lot by the Chamber office. Harvest Fest will feature entertainment, silent auctions, raffles, costume contests, kid’s games, Beer Stein Holding Contest, Hammerschlagen Contest, Baggo Tournament, Food Trucks, Hay Rides and more to help the chamber continue to support community events, education, local charities and community projects.
