Summertime offers a chance for more family time with backyard barbecues, trips to the lake and visits to the area festivals. Pack up the kids, or the grandparents, and head on out for some fun.

he kids are out of school, the temperatures are rising and it’s time to start planning for all the summer fun you can fit into the next three months.

Our Summer Fun Guide is here to help you with that.

We’ve profiled some big events and have a large calendar of upcoming happenings to give you an idea of what’s out there this season.

In southeast Wisconsin, there’s never a shortage of things to do once the weather warms up. From the county fairs to fishing on the lake to camping “up north,” there’s plenty of adventure to be had. Then there are the area’s farmers markets, outdoor concerts, water ski shows and community festivals to entertain.

And don’t forget the area’s bike trails, something we’re known for. We’ve compiled a listing of some of the best trails in southeast Wisconsin and have previews a few special places to stop along your

cycling travels.

We’ve also included some health and safety information, to keep everyone in tiptop shape.

One of the best things about summer is the ability to entertain outdoors, with backyard barbecues, Fourth of July parties and nighttime dinner parties on the deck.

From creating a backyard movie theater to whipping up a farm-to-table dinner with everything you found at the farmers market, summer entertaining let’s you be creative and do something a bit different from the norm. We even have a few tips for changing things up and making it a time to remember.

And although no parent wants to hear the dreaded “I’m bored” from their kid, especially 6.8 seconds after summer vacation starts, sometimes it’s good to let them languish in their boredom for a bit to see what they might come up with to occupy themselves.

I would recommend this be done under adult supervision, though. Bored kids with

time on their hands and unlimited freedom are not usually a good combination.

We hope you find what you need in this guide to plan a whole season of fun and activity for the whole family.

Kids who are surrounded by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves.

Ways to encourage a healthier lifestyle amilies often look for fun things to do together, and few things are more fun than physical activity. Choosing activities that combine fun with physical activity is a great way to bond as a family and get healthy at the same time.

According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to fight the problem of childhood obesity, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Parents know it can sometimes be hard to get kids to disconnect from their devices long enough to get out and play.

But Let’s Move! notes that kids who are supported by their families or surrounded by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves.

Families looking to get fit and grow closer can consider the following approaches to live healthier, more active lifestyles.

Give gifts to encourage activity Both youngsters and adults are enamored with the latest gadgets, but tablets and video game consoles won’t do

much to make families more physically active. In lieu of toys that promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity. Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together.

Restrict TV time

Walk or ride bikes

When running errands in town, take the kids along and walk or ride bicycles rather than drive. This is a great time for families to catch up, and walking or riding a bicycle is great exercise for adults and kids alike.

Establish house rules regarding how many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night.

Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity.

Volunteer as a family

Become weekend warriors

One great way to get kids excited about an active lifestyle is to let them plan family activities. Kids who are encouraged to come up with activities, whether it’s visiting the zoo or going kayaking as a family, are more likely to embrace those activities.

Schedule physical activities for the weekends. When planning weekends, parents can schedule a physical activity for the whole family. Make time to go hiking at a nearby park or schedule a family basketball game in the driveway. Such activities are healthy, and they don’t have

Let’s race Wisconsin

Tour of America’s Dairyland returns to East Troy June 22 The largest competitive cycling event in the United States, the Tour of America’s Dairyland, will make its seventh stop in East Troy on Friday, June 22.

The East Troy Cycling Classic begins at 10:35 a.m. with nearly nine hours of highenergy professional cycling around the East Troy Village Square and nearby streets.

“ToAD has differentiated itself by evolving into a community-wide festival that happens to have cycling throughout the day,” said Vanessa Lenz, Executive Director of the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the event. “East Troy is day 2 on the 11-day race series and our schedule represents everything our local community has to offer.”

Spectators may watch the cyclists whiz by once every three minutes from anywhere on the racecourse, which will feature plenty of food, drink and entertainment.

Admission is free.

“This year’s event features live music, the East Troy Farmers Market, an ESPN radio broadcast and more. Many surrounding businesses will get in on the action with race day specials and bike themed items,” Lenz said.

“We’ve got two races for locals to get in on the action. East Troy’s 4th annual Slow Ride Bike Race will feature riders competing to be the slowest without stopping. Last place comes in first. The winner gets $100 and there will also be a prize for best costume,” she added.

“The Tour de Square Kids Fun Races has been a favorite for the past six years. Entry is free but pre-registration is required.”

East Troy is only one of three hosts on the ToAD 2018 series to host handcyclinga form of adaptive cycling that enables athletes of all abilities to ride a “bike” exclusively using the upper body.

The lowdown

The East Troy race start and finish will be on the east side of the square (2096 Church St.).

About 500 cyclists from around the country and abroad will ride laps around the half-mile course between 10:35 a.m. and 8 p.m. for timed races that range from 40 to 90 minutes.

The race will shut down streets on the course, but local businesses will remain open. Parking will be available in the

The title sponsor for the East Troy Cycling Classic is the Dennis and Janice Klumb Family Foundation, which put up half of the bid fees to host the race. The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce serves as the local host, with funding for the balance of the fees donated by other local and regional sponsors.

Competitors race around the Village Square in East Troy during a past installment of the Tour of America’s Dairyland bicycle event. The tour returns to East Troy on June 22.

Area bike trails Bugline Trail

The Bugline Bike Trail owes its existence to the quarries near Lannon. Trains once hauled famed Lannon Stone from the deep limestone pits which still operate today. A look down into the quarries from the trail is an impressive sight.

At the west end of the trail is the tiny village of Merton. The old mill there still operates, and the adjacent mill house is an architectural gem.

Glacial Drumlin State Trail East

Running between Wisconsin’s two largest urban areas, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail stretches for 52 miles through farmlands, glacial topography and several small towns from Cottage Grove to Waukesha. It’s the easiest trail through the Kettle Moraine. The trail is on an abandoned rail corridor, except for a 1.5-mile section northeast of Jefferson, which currently uses public roads as the trail route.

JAVA JO’Z OFFERS CYCLISTS A PLACE TO REST AND REPLENISH For many years,

By Tracy Ouellette Java Jo’z Specialties EDITOR Inc. in Waterford has been a favorite of area cyclists to stop and rest a bit on their bike treks on the Seven Waters Bike Trail, which runs from Burlington to Muskego.

“The bike trail is about a block away and runs behind our property, so we get lots of bikers here,” Java Jo’z owner Boni Weis said. “I have people who bike anywhere from 5 to 30 miles and love to stop here.”

Weis said the Department of Natural Resources has made improvements to the trail in recent years, and the people who use the trail, whether for biking or walking, also pitch in to keep it clean and obstacle free.

“It’s really nice now and used more and more,” Weis said. “We have miles and miles of bike trails in Wisconsin, I think we might have even passed Minnesota with the miles now, but I don’t know for sure.”

Weis said most of the cyclists who stop at the coffee shop do so on the weekends.

“If it’s nice out we can see a lot of bikers,” she said. “I get serious ones, all decked out in their equipment and I

get more casual bikers, too. If the sun is shining, they’re out biking.”

The location of the bike trail helps bring in customers, but Weis said for her Java Jo’z is more of a community service than a moneymaker.

“We pretty much do break-even business here,” Weis said. “I look at it as a service to the community – a place to gather and relax.”

She said the hours of the business have been tailored to her customers, keeping in mind the fact that Waterford is a “sportsminded community” and opening early on the weekdays and closing by 8 p.m. each night.

“There’s no point in being open later,” Weis said. “I open at 5:30 a.m. on the weekdays and 7 a.m. on the weekends because that’s when people want to come.”

Weis said she also has given a lot of local kids their first job as another way to serve the community.

“I’m sure its well over 100 kids who got their starter jobs here,” she said. “Some lasted three months and some three years.

I’m trying to teach the kids ways to move

forward in their lives and the skills needed in the real world like communication and teamwork.”

Weis said she has notebook where the workers can write out any grievances or issues they’ve come across and then they can bring it to her for discussion.

“I tell them to write it down first, so they can organize their thoughts and then we can talk about it,” she said. “It’s just something I’ve instituted here and it works. Writing things down helps, I always say we can only remember seven things, after that you need to write it down.”

General Store/ Backyard Bikes meets outdoor enthusiasts’ needs They aren’t farmers, but not many business owners rely more on Mother Nature than the Bettingers.

Mike and his wife, Anita, are Milwaukee area natives who left the big city when they bought the LaGrange General Store and Backyard Bikes & Ski in 1982.

They require about four months of quality, consistent snow and as many dry, pleasant days as possible the rest of the year to satisfy their recreational patrons and their cash registers.

Although their precipitation-dependent business —Anita currently has a fulltime job, too — has endured economic

challenges, they couldn’t have asked for a better geographical location or more pastoral setting despite sitting at the intersection of busy Highway 12 and County H in LaGrange Township.

That’s because they are nestled in the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which means one of the best and most popular trail systems in the state sits just minutes away, beckoning bikers, hikers, skiers and horseback riders.

“We’ve had three terrible winters in a row with not much snow, so biking will have to pick us up the rest of the year. It’s so unpredictable … but I expect us to be busy today because they’re saying rain tomorrow,” Mike Bettinger said right before opening May 18.

Change is constant And like the weather, things have changed tremendously since he started this adventure.

“I’ve never been an avid biker, but we saw a need,” he said. “I mean, there were

no designated trails or routes, and there weren’t any maps, so we created them.

And mountain biking didn’t exist back then and didn’t really get started until the early 1990s, but now it’s known on a national and global scale.

“But we’ve seen a resurgence as far as running and hiking, so there’s been blossoming and growth in all three,” he added.

And that bodes well — again, if the weather cooperates.

Still, Backyard Bicycle & Ski provides the outdoor enthusiast everything he or she needs in biking and skiing equipment sales and rentals, not to mention bicycle repairs, so they can hit the John Muir, Nordic and/ or Emma Carlin trails.

Both halves of the business typically are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but closing time usually extends to 8 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day. “Many people are getting away from the old 9 to 5 schedule, so we’ve seen an

increase during the week,” Bettinger said.

“And I was teasing some customers the other day that we’re seeing more business from people over (age) 60 who have more time on their hands.”

A popular stop

The quaint spot, thanks largely to the Bettingers’ self-promotional efforts and word-of-mouth, has become increasingly more well known.

“The word definitely has gotten out, and on a national level,” Bettinger said.

“We had a guy from Alabama in here who bought a bunch of beer and cheeses. And a guy from Germany came in last week … we get a lot of people who might be doing business in Milwaukee or Chicago and do a Google search for places to get out.”

However, don’t forget the general store, which emphasizes healthy, natural food and drink choices that often fit well with

the active lifestyles of those who frequent the shop — and many are produced in southeastern Wisconsin.

Made in-house every day, some of the highlights include their soups and salads and the original sunflower seed-based smoothies.

And the menu goes on and on, including beer, sandwiches, baked goods, ice cream and other hot and cold drinks, satisfying palettes from visitors and regulars alike.

Ups and downs

Despite being a pioneer in many ways in building his outdoor business and literally putting it on the map, Bettinger continually sees many ups and downs, just like the trails that many of his visitors tackle nearby.

“I never really thought about it,” Bettinger said of his many accomplishments in creating one of the best destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.

“Running a small business is never easy and has gotten harder because the whole landscape has changed. Despite us being unique, it’s so competitive.”

He said a big challenge is finding quality help. Bettinger said he signs 12 to 18 paychecks during their busy times, including five full-time employees.

Their son, Andrew, has helped out in the shop, but Bettinger isn’t sure yet what the future holds or whether the business will remain in the family.

Hank Aaron State Trail

Named in honor of baseball legend Hank Aaron, this 14-mile trail traverses Milwaukee County from Lake Michigan through the Historic Third Ward and the Menomonee Valley to the Milwaukee/ Waukesha County Line.

John Muir/Emma Carlin Trails

Over the years, the Muir and Carlin trails have been continually improved to cope with the intense use that fills their parking lots on any good riding weekend.

A big part of the attraction is mostly oneway trails in the challenging terrain of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The rugged terrain, hills and kettlelike depressions make for some tough riding and may not be for everyone.

But for riders looking for challenging, technical riding – this is the place.

FARMERS MARKETS DRIVE TRAFFIC TO THE HEART OF COMMUNITIES

When springtime arrives in Wisconsin, it signals the beginning of a Wisconsin staple – the small-town farmers markets. Often a weekly event in places like Burlington, Lake Geneva, Elkhorn and East Troy, the markets give locals and visitors a chance to enjoy the community and sample its offerings.

The Burlington Farmers Market kicked off its 10th season in May and although the weather didn’t cooperate with the planned kids’ activities for the day, organizer Carol Reed said the first market day of the year was a success.

“We had a big birthday celebration and planned things like a bounce house for the children, which will have to be rescheduled, but even without it the kids had a great time. Just watching them have fun playing in the park was great,” Reed said.

Burlington’s market is in Wehmhoff Square on the corner of Washington and Pine streets in the downtown district. The market runs 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays May through October.

Expanded for 2018

Reed said the market has been updated and expanded this year, with about 25 to 30 vendors scheduled each week.

“Last year we were hearing comments from people that the market was getting small and it wasn’t worth the time to come out to it anymore,” Reed said. “So, last fall, I got to work on finding new vendors and with the help of the board of directors, we’ve got a lot of new things.”

Reed said growing the market was critical for its success and to help bring in more visitors to the city. She said that while she couldn’t speak for local businesses, the comments organizers hear is that many who attend the market also shop elsewhere in the city.

“They make a trip of it,” Reed said. “People have said things like they needed to drop off a pair of shoes at Itzin’s and they scheduled it for Thursday so they could hit the market too.”

Farm-to-table event set

New this year will be the Sept. 22 farm-to-table dinner, a ticketed event on a local Burlington farm. More information on that event will be available in summer.

The Burlington market is a “producer market” Reed said.

“So that means the people who sell there need to produce what they make,” Reed said.

The market offers in-season produce, breads, bakery, meat, cheese, fresh and smoked fish, artisan soaps and crafts, jewelry and more.

“Some of the vendors will vary from week to week, but many of them will be there all season long,” Reed said.

To promote the market, Reed said organizers are offering weekly and monthly drawing for “Market Money” to people to use at the market. At the end of the season they will have a grand-prize drawing for two tickets to the fall farm-to-table dinner.

“We love our farmers market because it makes the square come alive every Friday for 20 weeks, May through October,” Chamber Director Vanessa Lenz said. “It not only gives people a chance to buy fresh, seasonal food and artisan goods but also gives them a dose of community.

It’s a chance to get together every Friday and I think East Troy really wants and needs that.”

The market in East Troy is just one of the popular events the chamber sponsors on the Village Square each summer. A few years back, the chamber added First Fridays to the market line up.

“We kicked off our popular East Troy’s First Fridays series three years ago because we wanted to add an extra incentive to draw more people to the market in East Troy and encourage regulars to hang out on the square longer,” Lenz said.

Each First Friday, May through November, features a showcase event with surrounding local businesses collaborating to bring an afternoon and evening of fun. The First Fridays kicked off with the May the Fourth Be With You event on May 4.

the center of attention in East Troy, Lenz said the big events help to draw visitors into the area and introduce them to businesses on and around the square and beyond. Getting the word about East Troy is one of the chamber and village’s main goals.

“East Troy is well worth a visit. In addition to East Troy Village Square Park and our thriving downtown district, we are known for our one-of-a-kind attractions like the East Troy Electric Railroad –Wisconsin’s last original electric railroad line, Alpine Valley Music Theater, Skydive Milwaukee as well as unique recreational opportunities

and vibrant events and festivals,” Lenz said.

A market on the Square The Elkhorn Farm Market began thanks to a grant through the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The grant was only for a couple of years, but the market has been a success and is entering its 12th year.

It’ll be in Veteran’s Park in Elkhorn on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from June 9 through Sept. 29, according to volunteer market manager Christy Harteau. The cost per vendor is $15 per week or $100 for the season.

“We’re a producers-only market, meaning they have to make it, bake it or grow it, like our motto says,” she said.

“No commercial products are allowed, and people can’t sell things that aren’t their own.”

The Elkhorn Farm Market is run by a committee of vendors.

“That’s important because the decisions that have to be made always focus on what’s best for the market,” Harteau said.

“Those that want to become a vendor can get on a waiting list, but generally we take all vegetable growers that want to be part of it,” Harteau said. “And it would be nice to have more fruit available.”

She said there’s been a misconception that the market is organic. While some vendors are certified organic, it’s not a requirement.

Harteau said early on, the market tends to have more artisans, but produce increases once vendors have harvested their vegetables.

“People not local don’t always understand that the produce is from this area, and that means it’s not always available, especially early on,” she said.

During midseason, Harteau said the market averages 25 to 30 vendors on any given Saturday, and she estimates upward of a couple hundred people shop “on a good day, with cooperation from the weather.”

Though vendors vary depending on a number of factors, she said items available may include produce, honey, jellies and jams, eggs, corn, cider, coffee

beans, dog treats, baked goods, plants, metal work, woodwork, original art, needlework, tote bags, painted gourds and, on occasion – fruit.

In addition to serving as the manager, Harteau staffs an information booth at the market that promotes local events, steers people to local establishments for coffee, breakfast or lunch and has copies of the Farm Fresh Atlas – a listing of area farms – available.

“The best thing we hear from vendors and visitors is that our market is friendly. My personal motto is to be kind, and that’s how the market is, too.

It’s a friendly atmosphere and a great representation of the community and county,” Harteau said.

Vendors, in addition to being producers, need to live within 15 miles of the market to meet the “locally grown” requirement, she said.

As a bonus – and to make the market more fun for shoppers while also supporting the local community – drawings are held each Saturday.

“Each week we give away a gift card for Friends on the Square, but we also add others in – coupons from Matheson

Memorial Library, J. Roberts Menswear and tickets to Lakeland Players’ fall play, just to name a few,” Harteau said.

The market is held rain or shine.

However, in the event of rain, it’s held in the parking lot behind the Walworth County Government Center.

Enjoying fresh air and fun is part of visiting the playground. But parents should always emphasize safety when their youngsters are playing.

Staying safe on the playground TIPS TO KEEP THE KIDS FROM GETTING HURT WHILE PLAYING Playgrounds provide places for children to run, laugh, play, and share experiences with their friends. Playgrounds also are instrumental in fostering social connections among children and providing places to exercise.

Although playgrounds are much safer than they used to be, that doesn’t mean children cannot get injured when playing at modern playgrounds.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says playground-related traumatic brain injuries are still a major threat, and emergency departments treat more than 20,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground injuries each year.

Broken bones, abrasions and even strangulation can occur on playground structures. But many injuries can be prevented by following established safety guidelines.

Adult supervision

The childhood safety resource Kids Health notes that adult supervision is a key component of preventing playground injuries. Adults can ensure that kids do not engage in unsafe behavior when using

playground equipment. Adults also can help kids gauge distances on equipment, help them get up and down from climbing structures, and help make sure that older kids do not test limits too much. Simply having parents or other caregivers nearby can tame behavior.

Safety guidelines

Advocating for children’s safety on playgrounds means checking to see if equipment is deemed safe by various watchdog organizations. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is one of these groups. Over the last 35 years, innovations in technology have led to new playground equipment and surfacing requirements.

Some safety guidelines include proper signage and labeling; sight lines that enable adults to keep track of children throughout the playground; and safe surface materials, which include engineered wood fiber, pea gravel, sand, shredded rubber mulch, wood chips, and organic mulch.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance can keep equipment in safe working order.

Tripping hazards, such as rocks or tree stumps, should be removed from the area.

Metal or wooden swing seats should be replaced with soft seats. Sharp edges should be made smooth, and all platforms should be in good repair with working guardrails. Hardware should be checked and never protrude.

The cushioned surface should extend at least 6 feet beyond the equipment.

Additional coverage may be needed, depending on how high a slide is or how long a swing is. Materials should be replaced if they are worn out.

Age-appropriate

Children should use only the equipment recommended for their age groups and ability levels. The CPSC says that preschool-aged children should only use ladders that are less than or equal to 60 inches high. Older children can use arch climbers or chain or cable walks.

Age guidelines should be clearly posted on the equipment to help adults ensure their kids play on equipment that is right for their ages.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are around 76 million cases of foodborne illnesses each year in the United States alone.

Those involve hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. The CDC warns that people need to be even more diligent during warmer months to prevent food-related illnesses.

Keep groups small

The smaller the group, the lower the likelihood of producing waste and the less wildlife may be disturbed. Large groups can be noisy, even when they’re trying to be quiet and respectful. This may startle animals away from their homes. Small groups also can be contained more easily, which means camp size will impact the least amount of habitat possible.

Carry in and carry out

Nature enthusiasts should dispose of trash properly when spending time outdoors. Campers and hikers can bring along an extra bag for garbage, preferably one that can be sealed to reduce the chances of attracting wildlife. Dispose of trash upon leaving the park or nature preserve.

Stick to the beaten path

The primary goal of a trail system is to provide enjoyment of natural environments with little impact on surrounding areas.
