10 tips on how to have more family fishing fun There may be nothing more sweet in this big, wide world than gazing upon photos and videos of your kids or grandkids – with smiles a mile wide – holding up what they think is a huge “monster” fish (even if it’s just a small sunfish or bluegill), or photos of your family all together enjoying a day of fishing and having fun on the water. As our country gradually warms up from a long, cold, nasty winter, now is the time to get ready to make this your best fishing year ever! Local guide shares his passion with clients By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
or George Kaider, local fly fishing guide and owner of In the Flow Fly Fishing, there is nothing he enjoys more than spending a day on the rivers and streams of Wisconsin, sharing his love of fly fishing. He has been doing so for over 30 years, and he has perfected his skills in both fly fishing and in tying his own flies to use while fishing. “I first learned to fish as a young boy,” Kaider said. ”My grandmother who enjoyed fishing, retired to Florida. There was a small pond on the property and when we came to visit, she would take me out to fish.” While he enjoyed this fishing with his grandmother, it was not long before he became more interested in learning more about fishing, and not just standing casting and holding a pole waiting for the fish to bite. It was fly fishing that caught his attention. Now over 30 years later, Kaider is an expert fly fisherman and guide, who enjoys not only fishing himself, but sharing his knowledge and talents with others. Teaching others has been a life long journey for him. “Early in life, I knew I wanted to work with kids and I have done so as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and sports coach (football and wrestling),” he said. “But over the years I have learned that teaching adults can also be rewarding. Teaching and guiding fly fishing has been a highlight of my life.” Kaider continues to work at Mundelein High School in Illinois as a counselor, traveling from his home in Lake Geneva each day. On weekends and during the summer, he turns his attention to teaching mostly adults how to fly fish and guides them on a day journeys down the rivers and streams of southeastern Wisconsin as he directs them to the best spots to find

the fish. Here they then put into action what he has taught them earlier in the day.
A business spawns
While Kaider has been arranging fly fishing trips for years, last year he decided to officially launch In the Flow Fly Fishing Guide Service. In the Flow Fly Fishing Guide Service offers full-day fishing experiences under the direction of Kaider, who is knowledgeable about the special places to find the fish. “Each experience is different depending on the client,” said Kaider. “When a client calls to set up an event, we have a long conversation, much like an interview on both of our sides. I need to know what are their goals for the day and what experience they have. With more information I can set up a program to meet their needs. I want them to have a great experience whether they are a beginner or an expert. During the interview, the prospective client also learns more about me and my method of teaching and what they can expect from the day.” After he speaks to the client he begins to put together the day. For the beginner, the day will begin with a 60 to 90 minute session on casting. This will be held on dry land as the fundamentals of casting are explained. These will include proper stance and grip. The physics of managing the fly line to direct it to the area where the fish are located and to keep it from tangling will also be addressed. Once the fundamentals are learned, they will move into a wading session. Here Kaider will teach them how to safely wade into the river, how to target the fish, and how to retrieve the fly that is used for bait once the fish is caught. “We do a catch and release method of fishing on all our trips, to protect the environment. This way the population of fish remains for others to enjoy,” added Kaider.
Taking to water
Once the basics are learned, they will move from wading into the raft and begin their float down the river. Kaider will sit in the middle section and man the oars for the entire float, steering and directing the raft. He can take two fishermen on the raft during each trip. possible to observe them and correct any problems,” added Kaider. He also noted that more lines being cast makes for tangled lines especially when they are just beginning to learn how to cast correctly. They will spend the next five hours on the float as Kaider points out the places where there are fish. The type of fish that they will pursue will depend on what the fisherman wants to accomplish. Usually, they will be able to catch a trout. Bass are a bit more difficult to capture and require a bit more finesse. So, if they just want to catch a lot of fish, they will be directed to spots where the trout gather. Lunch is prepared by Kaider, often freshly grilled bratwurst along with trimmings and sides. Lots of Gatorade is on board to keep everyone hydrated. Being out in the fresh air makes everyone hungry and ready to eat. For the more advanced participants, the day is planned a bit differently. If they already know how to cast, they forego the onshore casting basics and the two hours wading in the river. Instead, they head directly to the raft to prepare for their nine-hour trip. They will spend eight hours fishing and have a one-hour rest during which lunch will be prepared and served. “Sitting in the raft for the extensive amount of time that we are in it can become very tiring. So, at times I will stop the raft and send them into the river to stretch their legs and do a little fishing while wading. Good exercise and good for circulation,” added Kaider.
Gearing up
Dressing correctly for the day is important. Participants are advised to bring their own waders and footwear. If they don’t have waders, they should wear quick drying clothing and shoes that can withstand being in the water. Wearing the waders throughout the day, even during boat time is suggested because of the time when they enter the water to stretch. They are especially recommended in the boat in the spring and fall when the weather is cooler. A hat and sunscreen are also good ideas to bring on board. Other than that, no other supplies are needed. In the Flow Fishing supplies all the fly rods and flies. “All of the flies I use are hand tied by me,” Kaider said. “Learning to tie flies that have the appearance of food attractive to the fish takes time. The flies are each tied in such a way that they do resemble the types of food each individual species searches to obtain.” Creating the flies is not just a method of putting together a variety of colored threads or strings but creating one that actually can move in the water as the real bait would. that mimic the patterns of the live bait they crave. Or they search for the frog patterns that float on top of the water. Each of the hand-tied flies takes more than an hour to create. If well made they will last the season. Safety on these trips is important and Kaider is a Class 5 whitewater kayaker and is certified in swift water rescue.
One with nature
“Going out into the rivers and streams and enjoying the time takes you into the zone. Here you are in a state of mind where time seems to stand still,” Kaider said. “While continuously casting, it becomes a repetitive pattern where one concentrates on the movement and is able to forget about problems, work, and responsibilities. You quickly become one with nature.” Spending the day on the boat, friendships are also often established. “Even I can’t just talk about fishing for nine hours so there is often an exchange of information about their lives. Many friendships start on a fishing trip and continue long after,” Catch all the

The theatre though has suffered through the pandemic as most other businesses have with closures and restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Located in the historic theatre building on Main Street in downtown Antioch, PM&L Theatre has once again returned to production, providing live entertainment to the community. It is exciting to see the lights back on in the 1914 theatre and productions again open for the entertainment of the community.

“We were ready to open a new production in 2020 when the lockdown occurred. Since we were ready to go, we left the set on the stage waiting for the State of Illinois’ decision on whether could reopen,” said Guy Finley, vice- president of marketing for the theater and a member of the performing group. Unfortunately, the reopening did not occur as quickly as expected. In December 2021 the stage set was removed and another put up for the holiday favorite, “A Christmas Carol.” Finley said the response was amazing and the show became the third highest grossing production. Local theater group returns to live production There is a three-year cycle with “A Christmas Carol” being presented one year, “A Christmas Story” possibly the next and then a random Christmas movie that changes before going back to “A Christmas Carol” the following season. In February, they moved on to open the popular play, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” an adult comedy that was enjoyed by full audiences for the three weekends it played. “Our seasons usually start in August but not so this year. Forming the group The PM&L theatre stands for Palette, Masque, and Lyre, the symbols of the artist, the actor, and the musician. The group came together in 1960, when 12 people, interested in producing art work, plays and concerts, each contributed $10 giving the group a grand total of $120 to bring culture to Antioch. The goal was to produce shows, music and art exhibits, which would benefit local community groups such as the Antioch Women’s Club, the Lake County Mental Health Group, and various local school PTA organizations. It did not take long to realize that the group needed to expand to be able to produce programs for the community with some regularity. Membership was broadened to provide help with the productions and funds to support the theater productions, especially needed once the PM&L group found a home.

That home was to become the Crystal Theatre, built in 1914 as a Vaudeville house and a place to enjoy the silent movies of the day. It was perfect for performing and located in the center of the community’s business district on Main Street. It was here residents came to enjoy silent movies and vaudeville shows as they were presented. In 1946 the name of the building was changed to The Lakes Theatre where the focus was showing movies especially the newer talkies until it closed in 1954. The PM&L group was offered the chance to rent the old Crystal Theatre in 1963. With the responsibility of the upkeep of the theater it became obvious they needed to increase their group membership. They began to produce more programs to allow them to develop the additional funding. The increase in membership also provided more volunteer hands. They were successful enough to not only manage to maintain the building but in 1982, they had enough funds to purchase the building, although they did so with some trepidation. Catch all the

Over the years the space has been remodeled and updated for the comfort of those attending the shows, numbers which continue to rise. They went on to purchase the building next door, a storefront, after receiving a donation. This building had been built around 1940. This space was converted to Tribute Hall, which offers drinks and snacks one hour before curtain and during intermission. The hall also added some practice space and room for smaller productions. Improvements to the building continue to be made.
Pandemic response To safely reopen to the public and to still protect their guests and cast members, many improvements and changes have been initiated during the pandemic. . Originally, refreshments could be purchased and taken into the theater to be enjoyed while watching the performance. Because of COVID this has changed. In the theater itself all guests must wear masks at all times. Eating and drinking in the theatre Summer 2022
is no longer allowed. These changes were initiated before the state put in their restrictions according to PM&L management as they were concerned about their guests. Tribute Hall will still offer drinks and snacks one hour before the performances and during intermission but they must be enjoyed in Tribute Hall and not taken into the theater. Drinks will be served in individual containers, while snacks will be individual servings. They ask that when you remove your mask to drink or eat that you remain with your own group, maintaining a distance from other visitors. “We have also introduced no cash purchases either at the box office or at the concession stands,” shared Finley. “We do not require proof of vaccination for attendance at our performances.” They have also hired a professional cleaning company to provide a thorough cleaning of the theatre between performances to assure cleanliness for the patrons. Visitors can be assured that breathing the air at PM&L Theatre is safe, according to the management. Before reopening to the public, the theater installed new air purifier systems to the heating ventilation and air conditioning system that • CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

Upcoming productions With the successful presentation of “I Love You Your Perfect Now Change” in February, followed up with the Tennessee Williams” play, “The Glass Menagerie,” the theater’s production of “The Old Ringers” opened May 20 and runs until June 5. The play is a bawdy, adult comedy and is strictly an adult affair, Finley said. “In this hilarious comedy, prolific American playwright Joe Simonelli spins a farcical yarn about five New York seniors who come up with a creative way to make some extra cash to combat a shrinking economy and their depleted pocket books,” the PM&L webpage states. “After receiving an obscene phone call during a coffee get together they decide to go into business for themselves by opening a home phone sex service. The only impediment being protagonist Diane’s disproving fundamental Christian daughter whom they must keep it a secret from.”
Financing productions At this time PM&L Theatre is embarking on its first capital campaign to replace the marquee and install one that will return the look of the facade more in line with its 1914 look. Catch all the

Volunteering PM&L Theatre has been a volunteer group since it was first organized almost 60 years ago. The theater continues to work with volunteers to build the sets, act in the productions, serve refreshments during productions along with serving as ushers for productions and anything else that needs to be done to continue providing the community with artistic endeavors. Many of the volunteers are long-term members who work for the group in a variety of way. Finley has been a member since he appeared in his first production here in 1985 when he was 13 years old. “It was there that I met the woman who was to become my wife as she too was in that production. Of course, it was years later before we became a couple,” Finley said. The theater group is always looking for volunteers and donations and volunteers are always appreciated. Fun ways to keep kids occupied over summer break Kids look forward to summer vacation every year. The last day of school gives way to less structured days when kids can spend more time outdoors and less time cracking the books. Summer vacation can be a dilemma for parents, especially in households where both parents work full-time. A pandemicrelated increase in remote working has made that problem somewhat more manageable, but even parents working from home must find fun way for kids to stay occupied until the new school year begins. No two kids are the same, so parents may need to try various activities on for size until they find something their children enjoy doing during the lazy days of summer.
Day camp Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities, including sports and nature walks, in a given day, while others may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or
science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and rec departments do not typically last all summer long, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters.
Reading Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45% of children between the ages of 8 and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can
get youngsters even more excited about reading.
Play dates Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off of parents’ daily plates. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host.
Find something free Perhaps in recognition of the need for affordable, family-friendly fare, many communities now host free events for kids and their parents each week. Weekly movie nights under the stars and concerts in community squares are popular in many communities, but those same towns also may host events specifically for kids during the daytime. A simple internet search of “free events near me” may unveil a host of activities that can keep kids happy and occupied on summer days when their schedules are open. focused on sustaining forestry. She, along with her brother, planted an additional 50,000 trees. In her estate plan for the farm, she included a monetary gift to renovate the barn so that it could be used for the educational classes she believed were important to educate people on the need to protect the land. Thus, the Seno Center was created. Meanwhile Dr. Shirley Peterson who owned a vacation property about three miles from the Seno Center was of a like mind. She wanted to preserve her woodlands and wetlands, which she named Drumlen Farm, and encourage environmental education. Protecting 1,200 acres In 2014 the Seno Foundation and the Kenosha Racine Land Trust merged and today as Seno K/RLT Conservancy the group protect more than 1,200 acres of land within Racine and Kenosha Counties. “Some of the land is owned by the conservancy and other parcels are protected by conservation easements. The conservation easements protect the land in perpetuity from development while ownership is maintained by the individual,” Santiago said. “The conservancy offers the owners advice on care with guidance to protect the land.” The Seno K/RLT Conservancy offers a variety of educational programs for both children and adults. Some of these programs are offered as community outreach programs with the Kenosha Parks Alliance. Many are held in Southport Park or other Kenosha and Racine parks, allowing local children to learn about nature while remaining in their own neighborhoods. Many schools attend field trips held at Seno K/RLT Conservancy and the children sparkle in the natural learning environment. Their eyes widen as they discover bugs and “critters” up close. They enjoy the wonder of butterflies and nature at its best. Programs teach them many things about nature that those who spend their time in the cities never learn. “One of our programs focuses on the five senses and is geared to children from 4 to 6 years of age. Science based programs, such as our Land of Ice and Fire program, for ages 11 to 14 years, looks at geology and glacial formation,” said Santiago. “Art in Nature for children 4 to 12 years can be a community outreach or as a field trip. The children focus on observation skills as they create an outdoor art project.”
Maple sugaring season Last year the Seno K/RLT Conservancy hosted a new program on maple sugaring. It was open to children and adults to teach the traditions of the annual spring ritual. Many children, and some adults are not aware that true maple syrup actually comes from the sap of the maple tree. of making maple syrup, a process that has been a part of Wisconsin’s history for centuries. The process itself goes back to the history of the Native Americans who lived in this area long before the European immigrants arrived. Participants learned how to identify a maple tree, the first step in learning to tap a tree and when it’s time to tap the tree. “It is the time when there are still freezing nights and warmer days to allow the sap to flow when tapped,” Santiago said. In addition to learning to tap the tree, they were taught the process of sap to syrup and the traditional sugaring techniques. The event ended with gathering around a fire and enjoying some storytelling.
Outdoor events If you are looking for a unique setting for a private event, consider renting the buildings of Seno. The buildings and grounds are available for events such as showers, weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. For weddings, the facility best accommodates 100 to 150 guests. Food must be catered as there is only a limited small kitchen, best for keeping items warm not for cooking. A tent can be setup on Memorial Field if there is a need to accommodate more guests. Parking becomes limited as the guest numbers increase. Riding together is always encouraged. Seno K/RLT is a non-profit corporation and as such is dependent on donations by both corporations and individuals to cover the costs of maintaining the conservancy and presenting the many programs that teach others about nature. Memberships also help support Seno K/RLT. Members a newsletter that is published twice a year to keep up to date on all that is going on at Seno K/RLT. Under the direction of new board President Mark Lesko, who has been both a long-term board member and Seno volunteer, the group is working together to provide more learning experiences for both while working to protect the natural spaces from development in perpetuity. “To do this work we are always in need of volunteers,” said Santiago. “Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks. They do everything from actual work on the property to see that it continues to prosper, to suggesting tree and plant ideas. They may also work with the field trips and provide educational materials.“ Volunteers are always welcome and needed. How motorcyclists can stay safe while riding Many people are drawn to motorcycles because of the intensity and excitement riding provides. Motorcycles are fun and routinely draw attention from other motorists. What motorcycles add in terms of speed and excitement, they may lose in safety, especially when compared to cars and trucks. The National Transportation Safety Board says motorcycle riders and their
passengers have the highest risk of fatal injury among all motor vehicle users. GEAR Motorcycle riders can improve the barrier between themselves and the road with the proper gear. Quality leather jackets and pants, helmets, gloves, and nonskid boots can protect the body from severe injuries. IMPROVE VISIBILITY Reflective tape added to clothing can help motorcyclists become more visible to other drivers; otherwise, wear bright clothing colors. Volo Museum

Have you been to the Volo Museum lately? If not, this is the year to visit as new displays are being opened this summer that will be enjoyed by the entire family. No longer just an auto museum, but also a variety of other displays including the addition of the dinosaur exhibit at Jurassic Park, which made its appearance last year. Add the new trains from movies, an experience known as the Titanic Exhibit, the Duesenberg Room, a new ice cream parlor with locally sourced ice cream and other new exhibits all scheduled to be open by this summer, and there is enough to enjoy for several visits. Jurassic Park brought a new and very popular exhibit to the Volo Museum. Dinosaurs of every kind and size are displayed here. While there is a small,
outdoor-themed playground built for children younger than 12 and a few large dinosaurs to be enjoyed outdoors, the majority of the museum is indoors, a perfect place to take the kids on a rainy day. “Indoors there are over 40 animatronic dinosaurs, set in realistic settings as one winds their way through the park” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing manager for Volo Museum. The dinosaurs can be seen swishing their tails and growling loudly throughout the exhibit, sounds that will thrill (or frighten) visitors. Each display has a placard telling the history and facts about the specific dinosaur on display. Hopefully your children will give you time to read them, and they too will enjoy learning more about each special dinosaur as they move into each new exhibit.
There amid live plants, to look like the home of the dinosaur, visitors take a walk through life as it was millions of years ago when these dinosaurs roamed the earth. Many of the exhibits, including this one, are interactive. Children will enjoy panning for fossils and learn more about the skeletons of the many dinosaurs. They can also dig in sand to find their fossil as they experience being an archeologist for the day. Volo suggests bringing ear protection for people who are sound sensitive, especially for young children. Earplugs are also available for sale in the gift shop if you forget to bring your own. There is a separate admission charge for the Volo Museum and for Jurassic Park. A combined ticket for both can be purchased • CONTINUED ON PAGE 35

that is less expensive than separate tickets. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance to the park. A BIT OF HISTORY In 1960 when the Grams family purchased the 35-acre, 110-year-old property that had previously been a dairy farm, it was not imagined that the property would be turned into the museum that it is today. The land is located in the little village of Volo, but back then it was not an incorporated village. When incorporated in 1993, the number of residents was less than 3000, and it has not grown a significant amount since then. While the family planned to live in the farmhouse and open a resale shop in the barn, which they did, it was the Grams teenage sons, Greg and Bill, who changed the focus of the property as they began to follow their passion of collecting old cars and repairing them. As their collection grew, friends and neighbors would stop by to view their collection. Eventually, they began to sell some of the autos they restored and realized there was an interest in old automobiles, and possibly some money to be earned when restoring some of the old models. The business grew from there as the family worked together to create the unique collection of automobiles including a variety of autos from movies and television shows that attracts visitors from around the world. The project has grown to encompass the majority of the 35 acres of the Grams farm as more buildings were built to house the many classic automobiles. A walk-through the automobiles on display can take several hours if one spends the time to enjoy the various automobile displays. Perhaps you will find an auto that is remembered from your past. From a single pole barn with a gravel floor, no heat, or plumbing to today’s multibuilding museum, the Grams boys built a major destination for over one half million visitors from around the world each year. The family still owns the business and now the third generation of Grams are actively working on site. “Many of our visitors are senior citizens, who are enjoying this trip into their youth as they may recognize autos from their past,” Wojdyla said. “But we are also a family-focused museum and welcome families of all ages. There is much to please anyone whatever their age or interest.” OTHER ATTRACTIONS It is not difficult to spend a whole day meandering through the many buildings of the auto museum alone. Whether you are there to look at autos you remember from your childhood or those special automobiles that seemed to do unbelievable stunts in movies or on television, you are sure to find the special ones you remember. interesting items to enjoy, including early motorcycles and bicycles, along with the old time animatron musical productions such as the one from Chuck E Cheese in the 1970s and 1980s. Today it can be enjoyed in the pizzeria, when one stops for lunch or a snack. Another favorite place to enjoy is the area known as the Coney Island exhibit. This area houses the popular 1927 carousel with woodcarved horses. Who doesn’t enjoy a ride on the carousel from the youngest child to adults who reminisce about their youthful days? The Coney Island exhibit area houses one of this year’s new exhibits – the Ice Cream Parlor. “The ice cream is purchased from a local manufacturer to assure great quality,” Wojdyla said. “Being in this area is a step back to days of being on the Coney Island pier when music, and ice cream were enjoyed by all visitors.” “There are plans to add a beer garden to the property,” Wojdyla said. “We are still working with the village on obtaining the liquor license, then we will proceed to build the beer garden.” TRAINS, BOATS AND AUTOS Equally important to sharing views of a variety of classic cars, is the museum’s place as leader in the world’s collector car sales. There are four buildings of automobiles up for sale and they can be viewed on line to help buyers decide if the classic car they hope to buy is available and in their budget. Enjoy viewing

these high-end autos that many can only dream of owning. If you have been around the Volo Museum, you may have noticed some major changes as some of the ground is being graded and a number of cranes can be seen in the yard. The Hollywood Train Tour will be opening soon. Recently the train used in the movie, Inception, which starred Leonardo Di Caprio, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon- Levitt was delivered to the Volo Museum. The train arrived on an extended semitruck chassis and was driven onto the grounds. According to the video on the Volo Museum website it was not easy to drive because of the limited vision and the extreme length of the car. The driver was guided by directors on either side of the train. The inside of the train car suffered some damage during the transport and will have to be rebuilt. “When all the train cars arrive and the ground has been graded the train display will open. There will be seven movie trains in all,” Wojdyla said. “Hopefully by June, they will all be accounted for and at home here in Volo.” The Titanic exhibit is another of the special exhibits currently being worked on that they hope will be completed this summer. The exhibit will be the home of a replica of the 1912 Renault that was used in the movie. It was the car where Rose and Jack, principal characters in the movie Titanic got to know each other as they sat in the car to enjoy some private time. The original Renault went down with the ship. There will also be a display of fashions of the time and an interactive picture display. The Duesenberg Room will be the place where the most expensive car will be on display. That is the Duesenberg. The original Duesenberg was created in the 1920s prior to the Depression. Because of its extreme cost, it was discontinued during this trying time. In the 1970s the Duesenberg 2 was created which sold for $500,000. It was a huge machine and not meant for general public use due to size and cost. Two other displays will be completed this summer honoring two popular movies that used special cars, which the museum has obtained. “Fast and Furious” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” will each have a display completed this summer. Spending a day at the museum is an allday event if you want to see a wide variety of the displays. Whether you are there to enjoy the variety of classic automobiles on display or to enjoy Jurassic Park, the train rides and other new displays, there is plenty to enjoy. Pool safety essentials to live by A backyard pool can be a wonderful summer oasis. Swimming immediately cools people off on hot and humid days, and even provides thorough exercise that works many different muscles in the body. And summer revelers know that swimming and splashing in the pool is an entertaining activity for people of all ages. Though pools are great summer spaces, one downside of pool usage is the potential for drowning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that, every year in the United States, there are an estimated 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings – an average of 11 drowning deaths per day. In addition, around 8,080 nonfatal drownings occur. It’s important to note that many of these incidents are unrelated to pool usage, as boating and even bathtub accidents contribute to drowning as well. But a 2020 review of 2,213 unintentional immersion deaths and other water-related injury deaths in Canada by the Canadian Red Cross found that immersion deaths were most likely to occur when swimming and wading. Children ages one to four, males, and people with seizure disorders or other medical conditions like autism are among Summer 2022
those at a higher risk for drowning. Pools are fun, but it’s a great responsibility to keep all swimmers safe. The following are some pool safety measures to put into effect. LEARN LOCAL ORDINANCES Local ordinances will spell out which precautionary measures are required by law for people who have a backyard pool. These often include a fenced yard, a fence around inground pools that is at least four feet high, self-latching gates, and/or pool ladders that can be locked or closed when the pool isn’t in use. RELY ON NON-SLIP SURFACES The pool environment can be wet and slippery. Utilizing materials like non-slip deck surfaces or rougher concrete finishes around pools can help reduce some slips and falls. The pool resource Poolonomics says people should be instructed to avoid running near or around the pool. KEEP WATER SANITARY Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so that it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbor any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The pool Catch all the

The free chlorine content of a pool can range from 0.5 to 1.6 to keep it sanitary. A quality testing kit can help pool owners balance water. INSPECT RETURNS, DRAINS PoolSafety.gov warns that hair, limbs, jewelry, or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain or suction opening in a pool or spa. INSTALL OTHER BARRIERS Barriers, alarms and pool covers can save lives and prevent access to pool water when the pool area is not in use. TAKE A CLASS Learn how to swim and perform CPR. Families can take swimming lessons to become better swimmers. Learning how to perform CPR on adults and children can save lives. Events that bring residents of a community together in one place have been on the back burner in recent years. As the world has dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, communities have scaled back on public events in the hopes of limiting crowds and preventing the spread of the virus. Since 2021, such restrictions have been loosened, especially in spring and summer, as more people get vaccinated and scientists learn more about the virus, including how it’s transmitted in outdoor settings compared to indoor settings. The return of spring and summer mark a great time for local leaders to add more events to their community calendars. The following are some fun event ideas that can help communities reconnect in the months to come. CRAFTS FESTIVAL The digital advertising agency NMPi noted in a report titled “Impact of COVID-19 on Arts & Crafts Retail” that the rise in pandemic-related self-isolation led to an increased demand for arts-andcrafts. As the world emerges from the pandemic, community leaders can provide residents an opportunity to showcase their newfound talents by hosting a crafts festival. Invite established professionals to showcase and sell their wares and encourage local hobbyists to do the same. This is a great way to promote local businesses and connect residents with neighbors who love to spend time working on arts and crafts. CONCERT SERIES Summer concert series are fun and potentially lucrative for local businesses. A 2016 analysis of a popular local concert series in northern New York State determined that a summer concert series sponsored by the Disabled Persons Action Organization allowed more than $1.6

LOCAL MURALS DEPICT THE AREA’S HISTORY By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
1869, the three-story Riverside Hotel became a staple on the Northeast corner of Riverside Drive and Elm Street, along the Fox River in McHenry. The hotel, which was built by John Wire Smith and D.S. Smith, used local materials including McHenry artificial stone made from clay retrieved from the local clay pits found in the area. The hotel was a resort hotel, a place where visitors to the Chain O’Lakes mostly from the city of Chicago, found a place to relax and enjoy the clean fresh air and the beauty of the Fox River and the Chain O’Lakes, as they escaped from the soot filled air of the city. Many came to McHenry because of the ease of arriving from Chicago on the train, which made its appearance in McHenry in 1854. They would arrive at the train station located in the area known as West McHenry. From here, the visitors would be transported to Riverside Drive, originally by horse and wagon, and later by automobile. At the waterfront, they would check into the Riverside Hotel and make arrangements for boat rides into the Chain O’Lakes to

enjoy the beautiful lotus blossoms that bloomed along the lakes. Grass Lake especially was noted for the heavy growth of the lotus flowers, so thick that lanes had to be cut through the flowerbeds to allow the boats to travel through. The Riverside was a hotel for the time, with a third floor ballroom offering high end entertainment and dancing and was also rented out for weddings and other events. Balconies lined the outside of the hotel, allowing visitors to enjoy the outside view when strolling along the balcony. These promenade balconies allowed visitors to completely encircle the building. Remember these were the days before air conditioning so a cool stroll around the hotel enjoying the fresh breeze from the river was often needed. The Riverside Hotel went through a number of owners and name changes over the years. It was remembered for offering the American Plan, which included three full meals per day for $2 per day with meals served in the dining room. For an extra 25 cents per person, the meal could be brought to their room. But nothing remains the same and eventually the balconies needed to be removed to allow for widening of the roads. With the advent of new roads in the area making it easier to reach the lakes and Catch all the

many families building their own summer cottages, the hotel was less prominent in the vacation plans of the visitors. The use of the hotel changed. “A pub opened in the basement in 1942. Many think it was named the Fox Hole because of the Fox River but it wasn’t. It was actually named in honor of the World War II veterans who were returning home after serving their country, many spending time in fox holes,” shared Lianna Zimmermann, owner of the Fox Hole. On the back wall of the dining area is a special mural. which was created by McHenry artist Frances Bacon around 1960. The scene is of the Riverside Hotel as it looked around the early 1900s. Automobiles were becoming popular, especially the types pictured in the mural. You may note that the roads of the day were unpaved and were shared with the horse drawn carriages still found in the area. The owners of the automobiles did not like sharing the streets with the horses because of the excrement they left on the street, which covered the tires of the autos. The horse owners did not like the automobiles sharing the streets because the drivers would blow their horns and scare their horses. • CONTINUED ON PAGE 44

Clothing in various styles is depicted on the citizens pictured at the hotel, along the street, and driving their automobiles. When attending a fancy hotel such as the Riverside, proper dressing was expected, whether traveling by automobile or horse drawn carriage. Oops watch for that horse on Elm Street.
Mural restoration Local muralist Elaine Sinclair said by the 2000s the mural was falling into disrepair. The paint was peeling and there were large cracks in it. “Some of the cracks were as large as 1/4 inch. The mural was painted in oils and the paints used at that time had too much linseed oil in them,” Sinclair said. Lianna Zimmerman who owns the Fox Hole did not want to see the mural disappear. “So, I hired Elaine Sinclair to come and restore it,” Zimmerman said. Sinclair was contracted to restore the mural. She met with friend and fellow artist, Lucy Tonyan, owner of the Studio of Art on Pearl St. in McHenry to request her help in restoring this huge, and very historical mural. They, along with some help from another local artist David Becker, began the job of restoring the work. “It was a huge project to restore because there was so much detail in the painting,” said Sinclair. “Restoring a mural is sometimes more difficult than creating a new one because you aren’t there to give the work your own look but to restore the original artist’s work.”
Outside mural In McHenry Sinclair is also known for many local murals including one that she created for the VFW post in McHenry. The mural itself is 45 feet long and pictured is a gigantic bald eagle with its wings extended. The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States, so designated in 1782. The mural can be seen and enjoyed from Highway 120 in front of the VFW Post 4600.
Outside murals of Fox lake When visiting the Village of Fox Lake, take the time to meander down Grand Avenue into the downtown business section of the community and enjoy the beauty of the three large, outdoor murals painted on the sides of buildings. These murals reflect the history of Fox Lake and its importance on the Chain O’Lakes. In 2019, the Village of Fox Lake as part of their Summer Art Series, commissioned three major murals to be placed in the downtown section of the community. All three sites were located on Grand Avenue,

just east of Highway 12. An easy walk and a place to enjoy not only the murals but the downtown train station and the variety of businesses. Walking east on Grand Avenue from Highway 12, the first mural one will encounter is the Pelican located on the east wall of the Lakes Realty Building, 16 E. Grand Avenue. This mural is 13 feet, 4 inches high and depicts a larger-than-life White American Pelican. Catch all the

The White American Pelican was chosen for this mural because the pelicans migrate north through the Chain of Lakes each spring, arriving in the area usually around March, before continuing their northern migration. At that time of year, the pelicans can be seen especially in Pistakee Lake and Fox Lake, This mural depicts the pelican on the shore of the lake, with a lotus blossom at his feet. The Chain O’Lakes is especially Summer 2022
known for their lotus flowers which grow in the lakes, especially in the shallowest of the lakes aptly known as Grass Lake where wild rice also grew. This mural now unfortunately needs restoration as some of the bricks that it was painted on needed to be replaced, taking out a section of the pelican. According to Elaine Sinclair who is the muralist who created this mural, she hopes that they will be repairing it soon. Further east on Grand Avenue the next mural will be seen. Located at 68 E. Grand Ave., next to the PNC bank and visible from their parking lot is the second of the murals created in 2019. The mural is on the west side of the building and is

painted in paler colors giving the mural a serene quality. It too features the lotus blossoms with many of its petals blowing in the wind. The lake with its vibrant blue water, matching the blue sky overhead plays an important part in this mural just as the lakes play an important part in the communities which surround them. Off on the right side of the mural are rowboats, which at one time were the most popular boats on the chain, used for transportation to and from the resorts and for fishing. Across the street at 71 E. Grand Avenue is the largest of the murals. This one covers the entire west side of the Dollar General Store and is filled with memorabilia of Fox

Lake as it was in days of old. The first scene is of downtown Fox Lake is it looked in the early to mid of 1900s. The autos depicted appear to be from the mid-1900s. The lotus blossoms are seen growing in the lake with a viewing stand above. The train, which arrived in Fox Lake in 1884, is pictured in the upper righthand corner. While the Summer Arts Series creates new and different displays for the community each year. Some of them, such as the anchors that were painted, were later sold to raise money to benefit the community. The murals, however, remain a part of the city, to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
