WITH SAFE BOATING Marinas and various marine areas can become contaminated with pollutants generated from boating activities. Boat cleaning, fueling and marine head discharge are just a few of the pollutants that can find their ways into the water. A past study in the marine reserve of Cape Creus in the Mediterranean Sea found that boat anchoring also is a considerable threat to marine habitats, as vulnerable ecologies can be damaged by anchors. Recreational boaters can do their part to keep the lakes pristine by adhering to some sound advice. REDUCE ENGINE EXHAUST Whenever possible, row, paddle or use sails to decrease engine use and subsequent exhaust. When engines must be used, do not idle unnecessarily. Always steer clear of the aft of the boat, where fuel fumes and

carbon monoxide can cause serious health implications. KEEP TRASH ON THE VESSEL
Do not discard any items over the side of the boat. Even seemingly harmless items can impact the environment. Store garbage in a bag and dispose of it properly when you return to the marina or dock. Secure items on board so they will not blow off and end up in the water. AVOID ANTIFOULING PAINTS Antifouling paints are special paints applied to the underside of vessels to prevent or slow down the growth of barnacles and other organisms. Maritime New Zealand notes that these paints can harm other sea life and prove dangerous when scraped off and not discarded properly. Catch all the

Oil and other mechanical fluids can leak into the water and affect the marine environment. USE PUMP-OUT STATIONS Pump out stations at marinas enable boaters to safely dispose of the contents from sanitary systems without waste ending up in the water. Commercial ships, such as tankers and bulk cargo carriers, have the added threat of ballast water. Ballast water keeps vessels buoyant. Kayaking
Kayaking is a water sport that can be beneficial to the mind and body. Just about anyone willing to spend a day on the water can benefit from learning about kayaking and how to get started with this rewarding activity. The history of kayaking is interesting. The word “kayak” means “hunter’s boat,” and the Inuit used to rely on these small vessels to catch food by sneaking up on their prey from the water’s edge. Some people still hunt and fish from their kayaks, but many are happy to use them for sightseeing and exercising. “Paddlesports are increasing in popularity among Americans who desire to connect with the outdoors,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. The Outdoor Foundation and The Coleman Company, Inc., found in a Special Report on Paddlesports that 21.7 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways Summer 2019
in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling. Learning how to kayak does not involve a significant initial financial investment. The outdoor experts at REI say there’s a good chance a novice kayaker will not go out and buy a boat immediately. It’s important to first get a feel for the sport and then go from there. Although it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s recommended that novices take paddling lessons to hone their kayaking skills. Learning the proper technique can help people avoid strain on their neck and back and safeguard their arms from fatigue. Novices should practice on calm waters until their technique is honed. Such companies charge a set price for an excursion that will provide transportation to the drop site as well as the equipment needed for the voyage. Boating is a rewarding hobby that allows people to spend ample time on the water enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and boating might go hand in hand, but a danger may be lurking in the air on or around boats that can put boaters’ health in jeopardy. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, carbon monoxide, or CO, can accumulate anywhere in or around a boat. Inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and blocked exhaust outlets are just two places where CO can accumulate. Exhaust also can get trapped in enclosed places, potentially leading to the accumulation of CO. Fortunately, the USCG notes that CO poisoning is entirely preventable. Routine maintenance and attentive boat ownership can protect boaters and their passengers from the threat posed by CO poisoning. Summer 2019
WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF CO POISONING?
CO is produced when carbon-based fuels burn. Such fuels include gasoline, charcoal or oil, so boat engines are not the only potential source of CO poisoning on a boat. Gas generators, cooking ranges and space and water heaters also pose a threat. CO is dangerous because it can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, preventing the body from getting the oxygen it needs. The USCG notes that both prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO or very quick exposure to high concentrations of CO can prove fatal.
WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF CO POISONING? Irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness are some of the early symptoms of CO poisoning. These are easily and often mistaken as seasickness when on a boat. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be addressed immediately. Catch all the

People experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a fresh air environment, observed and given oxygen, if necessary. Seek medical help and shut off potential sources of CO, if possible. Do not write these symptoms off as simple seasickness. Err on the side of caution, even if you’re unsure if CO poisoning is the culprit.
PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS FROM CO The USCG recommends all boaters learn where and how CO can accumulate on their boats. Maintain fresh air circulation throughout the boat at all times, running exhaust blowers whenever the generator is operating. Boaters and their guests should never sit, teak surf or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running. The USCG notes that the presence of exhaust fumes means CO is present, too. A new level of pub food Flat Iron Tap offers locally sourced gourmet burgers and beers

The journey to becoming a farm-to-table, scratch kitchen restaurant was a long one, but in April 2018 the doors to Flat Iron Tap in Lake Geneva opened and a dream for owners Dana Trilla and Dave Wingate was realized. They used their vision to transform the longtime pizza house into what now features clean lines and an artistic look. “We worked on the building for over a year before being ready to open,” Wingate said, explaining that they created the unique décor. It could be described as an ideal combination – Wingate’s carpentry and building skills and Trilla’s restaurant experience – resulting in just what they set out to do. “I had worked in the restaurant business in a variety of jobs for the past 25 years, the last five working with my father at Barrique Wine and Brew Bar on the Geneva Lake waterfront and was ready to open a new restaurant and bar with a very
different concept,” Trilla said. Wingate had also worked in the restaurant business, particularly in the construction and design end of it. They also shared the same vision – that of owning a place known for serving high quality, fresh food and locally brewed beer. After gutting the space, the first task was to install a new bar Wingate made from hardwood. He then moved on to the tables, each a different work of art. In addition to tables of traditional height, he built some high-top tables that have become increasingly popular. The tabletops are also unique and different from each other. They were designed using whatever types of wood, steel, copper, chains or other metals struck his fancy upon entering the workshop each day during the table-building phase, Wingate said. One of the original items in the restaurant, the tin ceiling, has been restored and is now featured throughout. “I was able to find some of the

original tin tiles tucked behind the ceiling tiles when I was removing them for cleaning,” Wingate said, adding he used them in an area that didn’t have tiles in place.
Beer tappers aplenty
The highlight in Flat Iron Tap, not surprisingly, is the 24 taps offering a variety of beer predominately from local breweries. In addition, there are numerous bottled and canned varieties available. “We have over 100 different beers available and 50 percent of them are from Wisconsin breweries. We like to support the local businesses,” Trilla said. The beer tapper itself is a work of art. “It was created out of an old tractor front end and the tractor’s manifold,” Wingate explained. For those not sure which beer they would like or are the type of person who likes to try a variety, the beer flights available are a fitting choice. For $12, four smaller servings of beer are provided. In addition to beer, there are also fine wines available from a variety of vintners. The wines include some California varieties as well as wines imported from Chile, Portugal and France. Trilla is the wine expert and said offering high quality wine is a priority.
The Flat Iron Tap is best known for its specialty burgers. Diners may choose from grass-fed beef, ground bison or lamb. Black bean burgers are available for vegetarians.

While having 24 beers on tap is certainly a draw to the beer drinkers it’s the food quality that will not only bring customers in but keep them returning on a regular basis. “We spent a lot of time coming up with the concept for the restaurant and bar,” Trilla said. They were looking to present a menu that reflects their values of fresh food. Nothing is frozen or premade as everything is made in-house from scratch using only fresh ingredients that, whenever possible, are locally produced. They chose top quality meat, egg, cheese and vegetable producers in the area and are so proud of the quality of their foods that the farms they purchase from are listed on the wall. “By using quality boutique farms we are able to get fresh foods regularly. They will come and deliver when needed even several times a week. So you can be sure that everything is fresh,” Wingate said. “We do not ever use anything frozen in preparing our foods. You can be certain that every dish is made from scratch when you order.” “Our French fries are hand cut. The battered onion rings are thickly cut in our prep area and hand battered to order,” Trilla added. While the kitchen is visible from in the restaurant it is very small and might make guests wonder where the fresh food is stored, and how everything is done in such a small space. kitchen and two walk-in coolers to keep everything fresh,” Trilla explained.
Gourmet burgers
Because there are many places in the area to get a burger, they wanted to offer something different and not be “just another hamburger joint.” Their gourmet burgers are the highlight of the menu, but they also offer numerous presentation combinations. Along the lines of more traditional but of the highest quality, is the grass-fed beef burger. It can be customized with heirloom tomatoes, broccoli slaw, avocado, Portobello mushrooms, bacon, or even a fried egg to top it off. Of the gourmet variety, the first listed on the menu is the Roosevelt Burger, perhaps so named because of Roosevelt’s founding Catch all the

It’s made from fresh ground bison and topped with thick-cut Flat Iron bacon, cheddar cheese, onion strings, and house Carolina BBQ sauce served on a pretzel bun with fresh cut fries. For one enchanted day this summer, downtown Antioch will be no more. With a swish of the magic wand, and the help of magical volunteers, the downtown area will once again be transformed into a community that is both magical and mystical, attracting wizards, witches and muggles from far and wide. Wizards Weekend Day returns to Antioch on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 9 a.m. The Wizard and Muggle Art Fair will be on Skidmore Street near the Band Shell Catch all the

opens to the public. At the same time the Antioch Library will be transformed into the Wizards School of Magic. Classes to enhance a wizard or witch’s magical skills will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Class placement will be decided by sorting the kids into their “houses” by age. Each student is requested to dress as their favorite wizard or witch and bring their SmartWands (also known as cell phones) to take memorable magical photos. Dressed in your wizard or witch characteristic clothing, or perhaps as your favorite magical character, be ready to be involved in exciting mystical fun all day. Many of these activities are free. Follow the map into the Wizard Village Shops, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Here once again enjoy more magical fun and a chance to use those SmartWands for unique photo opportunities. The map will contain all the information needed to participate in the Wizard scavenger hunt. Complete your map and return to the Magical Information Booth by 3:30 p.m. to be eligible to win a prize. At 2 p.m. gather all wizards and witches and even magical beasts (dogs only) who are appropriately dress in magical costumes and participate in the costume contest. How loud can you shriek? After a busy day participating in the numerous magical and mystical events, end the day by participating in the Wizards After Party. Using your feet or your broom, make your way to the Wizards Grand Hall (formerly the VFW Hall on North Avenue). The magical Wizards After Party will be an exciting event that includes a Children’s Parade, D’s Army and living statues. The Wizards After Party is open to wizards, witches and muggles from 5 to 99 years of age. Tickets must be purchased online at antiochchamber.org in advance. The reservation will provide a limited number of tickets that can be exchanged for food or participation in some of the magical events. Additional tickets to use for food or activities can be purchased at the event for registered attendees who need just a bit more food or fun. Tickets for the event are $10 for wizards, witches and muggles between the age of 5 to 12 years, and $15 for said visitors from 13 to 99 years of age. Parents are asked to find other arrangements for their wizards, witches and muggles younger than 5 as the activities are not suited for young children or magical beasts. The party will conclude with the Wizard Auction of magical wizard items and other surprises. Wizards Weekend Event is hosted by the Antioch Chamber of Commerce and not in any way associated with J.K. The carnival will have a new look this year as new spectacular carnival rides have been added for teens and adults. Once again there will be a special time set aside for children with special needs. On Friday, July 19, from 1 to 3 p.m., the carnival rides will not be opened to the general public. During those hours, the carnival will be open only to children with special needs who may bring their family members to share the fun with them. Summer afternoons at the pool can be made much safer by adhering to a few safety tips.
Pool safety starts with prevention Pools make some backyards the places to be in late spring and throughout summer. Lazy summer afternoons are a lot more enjoyable when they’re spent in or alongside a pool, and kids tend to say “I’m bored” with considerably less frequency when a pool is within arm’s reach. Pools are certainly fun, but they’re only as fun as they are safe. According to the USA Swimming Foundation, between Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2018, at least 148 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas. While those figures represented a 9 percent decline from the year prior, 148 deaths is still 148 lives lost too early. Pool safety need not come at the expense of summer fun. In fact, homeowners can employ various preventive measures to reduce the risk of pool-related accidents on their properties. • Inspect gates around your pool. The International Code Council, a member-focused association dedicated to the construction of safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient structures, advises homeowners to inspect all pedestrian gates in the barrier fences around their pools. Such gates should be selfclosing and self-latching, as both features ensure gates are always closed. In addition, the ICC recommends padlocking other gates around the property. • Remove objects around pedestrian gates. Kids can climb up on chairs, tables, large toys, and other objects left around pool gates to gain access to pools even when their parents aren’t looking or even home. Such items should be removed. • Install a pool alarm. Pool alarms can alert homeowners to accidental or unauthorized entrance into the water. The ICC recommends installing such alarms while noting that they should not be considered a substitute for barrier fences or safety covers. • Install automatic or manually operated pool covers. Pool covers can effectively prevent access to pools, spas or hot tubs. At the end of each pool session, cover the pool, even during the height of summer when pools are used daily. Blue skies and warm weather entice people to enjoy the great outdoors. For many people, few things are more enjoyable than soaking up some rays and breathing in some fresh air. Moderate temperatures help make many outdoor activities that much more enjoyable. But even if the weather isn’t perfect, individuals can make the best of the situation and still get out of the house. As the seasons of warm weather return, those itching to get outside can explore these entertaining outdoor activities.
HIKING Thousands of miles of hiking trails crisscross North America. These trails include rough and rugged paths blazed across natural areas and long-distance trails that stretch over portions of the
country. From the Appalachian Trail in the East to the Bigfoot Trail in the west, hikers and nature enthusiasts have plenty of trails to tread. Hiking is a great outdoor activity in part because it can be enjoyed by people of any age and just about any fitness level. Hikers can work up from relatively short and flat trails to more intense vertical and varied hikes. Local parks, government preserves and rural areas offer plenty of places to walk and hike. When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out
in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed.
BIKING Biking is another outdoor activity ideal for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Once you’ve learned to ride a bicycle, that ability stays with you, whether you ride a bike each day or haven’t taken one for a spin in years. Many towns and cities across the country have become much more bike-friendly in recent years, clearing space for biking paths and lanes even in the busiest metropolitan areas. And mountain bikers still have plenty of trails to traverse as well. Check that your bike is in good working order and that the chain is freshly oiled. Take your bike to a local cycling shop for a tuneup if necessary. Verify the fit of helmets, especially on children who may have grown since the most recent cycling season.
HORSEBACK RIDING Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance, strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with. Remember to wear the right clothing, including

Getting sand beneath one’s toes takes on an entirely new meaning where beach volleyball is concerned. In fact, beach volleyball players spend much of their time getting up close and personal with sand while diving for balls and spiking across the net. The precise origins of beach volleyball are not entirely known. Some accounts trace volleyball’s origins to 1915 in Hawaii, well after the indoor game originated in Massachusetts. But others insist beach volleyball began in Santa Monica, Calif., in the early 1920s. Regardless of its exact origins, beach volleyball began as a way for families to have fun at the beach. Volleyball was a diversion during the Great Depression, and a popular and inexpensive form of entertainment. Beach volleyball ultimately became a competitive sport and is now featured in the Summer Summer 2019
Olympics. The objective of beach volleyball is for a player to hit the ball over the net so that it lands in the opponent’s playing area. Each team consists of two players and is allowed a maximum of three hits to return the ball to the opponent’s side. A player cannot make contact with the ball two consecutive times. The Fédéracion Internationale de Volleyball is the international governing body for the sport. The FIVB publishes the Official Beach Volleyball Rules every four years, as approved by the FIVB congress, which provides the framework for how beach volleyball is played internationally. The volleyball court is rectangular and made of sand that is leveled and cleared of potential hazards. It is slightly smaller than an indoor court. The volleyball used in beach volleyball is slightly larger than that used in indoor volleyball and features a rougher texture and a lower internal pressure. Reconciliation at the heart of religious faith From their earliest days as members of the Church, Catholics are taught about the importance of reconciling their sins. That importance is formally recognized through the sacrament of reconciliation. Confession, and the frequency with which it should take place, varies depending on where a person is. People, parishes and even some areas of the world do it differently. While the expression and forgiveness of one’s sins may vary, confession remains a cornerstone of the Christian faith. Many people are first introduced to reconciliation as young children. Children preparing for their first Holy Communion must complete certain lessons and rites prior to being given the gift of the Eucharist. That includes participation in the sacrament of reconciliation. Confession and clearing oneself of mortal sin is done before receiving holy sacraments. It’s also customary during particularly solemn Summer 2019
seasons of the Church, such as Advent and Lent. Parishioners who have become lax in attending church may want to visit the confessional to have their sins absolved before they can, in good conscience, receive the Eucharist once again. According to reference material provided by Catholics Come Home, Inc., an independent, nonprofit Catholic apostolate that inspires and educates, the sacrament of reconciliation was established by Jesus Christ so that people could have their sins washed away and experience the renewal that such absolution provides. Some may question why they have to confess their sins before a priest and why sins are not absolved when confessing them to God directly through prayer? Daily prayer is an important component of the faith, but reconciliation involves priests because of a belief in the Mystical Body of Christ. The faithful collectively form this “One Body,” so their actions are not independent of one Catch all the

another. When one person sins, all of the faithful are affected, and when one part of the Body shares joy, so do all others. This is best exemplified by the words of St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:26. Even if the sins are not heard by others, they still have an impact. Therefore, confession before a priest serves as a more public way to be absolved of sin by the entire Body of Christ, as the priest is a representative of this faithful community. Sin can form a separation among the Body, and the sacrament of reconciliation helps mend that rift. A core tenet of Christianity is that God loves all sinners. It’s understood that even the most faithful can falter, and by participating in reconciliation, men, women and children demonstrate that they recognize their errors and that, in spite of those mistakes, they will always be welcomed in the eyes of God. ew things can beat a relaxing evening spent in the yard gathered around the grill in the company of friends and family. Cooking food over an open fire dates back centuries. Despite the various modern means of cooking food, the combination of a metal grill and some flames remains one of the more tasty ways to prepare meals. Grilling is a relatively easy concept to master, but environmentalists may question if firing up the barbecue is a smart choice. Rest assured that while the environmental impact of grilling is negligible, there still are ways to make it even more ecofriendly. Grilling purists may prefer charcoal to gas, feeling charcoal more effectively produces that familiar smoky flavor, but environmental experts say that gas grills may be better for the environment. A study by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy found that gas grills generate 5.6 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour, while charcoal grills produce 11 pounds per hour. Furthermore, the charcoal briquettes used on many grills are made from more than just coal. They may contain wood byproducts, starch, chemical additives, and lighter fluid. For those who insist on charcoal, use natural lump charcoal, which is made from coal and little else. Another step to take is to invest in a quality grill. Replacing a cheap grill every few years can be harmful to the environment, especially when you consider how many components go into the construction of a grill and the packaging required for shipping long distances. Quality products last longer, and that durability benefits the planet. In addition to buying a better grill, you must take good care of the grill and maintain it so it works optimally. In certain ways, grilling is already an eco-friendly activity, as it doesn’t lend well to prepackaged foods and it enables you to turn off the stove while reducing your electricity consumption. In some instances, you may not even need to fire up the barbecue at all. If you’re spending the evening by a chiminea or a fire pit, you can skewer a couple of hot dogs and cook them right over the flames. Do not offset the benefits of grilling by creating a bigger environmental hazard in meal preparation and service. Minimize the use of disposable plates, napkins, cups, and plastic cutlery at your backyard event. Rather than single-serve cans of soda or iced tea, use large pitchers or bulk-sized containers. Insist guests discard all recyclable materials in the proper recycling receptacles. Promptly wrapping up leftovers is another way to make grilling even greener. Refrigerating foods means you will have good meals for the rest of the week and will minimize spoiled food that would otherwise end up in the garbage. When shopping for foods to toss on the barbie, choose locally grown foods and sustainably raised and harvested meats and poultry. Serve generous portions of locally produced vegetables to stretch food even further. Grilling is a great way to cook in an eco-friendly way if you make a few changes for the better. (METRO CREATIVE)

Stop making these 8 common grilling mistakes Cooking food over an open fire imparts all sorts of flavor. Grilling tends to be quicker, less messy and more convenient than cooking in the kitchen – particularly during the dog days of summer. Outdoor grills are seemingly everywhere, including many backyards across the country. That grills are so commonplace doesn’t mean that everyone grilling is employing the right techniques.
1. Not prepping the food: The French culinary term for preparing to cook is “mise en place.” This is especially important when grilling, as cooks must deal with faster cooking times than they

would otherwise encounter when cooking meals in the stove.
2. Dirty grill: Make sure the grill is cleaned before and after each use. Grease can quickly build up on a grill, leading to flare-ups that can cause foods to char. Frequent cleaning also helps grillmasters avoid a tiresome cleaning process at the start of the season. 3. Forgetting to preheat: Preheating
the grill ensures that foods will cook quickly and as evenly as possible. Otherwise, meats can lose moisture and even stick to cooler grates. Reader’s Digest suggests preheating to between 350 F and 450 F depending on the food.
