Save lives – Reduce instances of distracted driving Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions.

It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel.

Put away tech devices

One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving.

Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message.

Set the GPS ahead of a trip

Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to

and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible.

Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision.

Better yet, let a passenger navigate.

Limit or skip phone calls

Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number.

Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off their driving responsibilities.

Drowsy driving is dangerous

Being tired can be a distraction as well.

Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over.

Keep the car on the road Simple ways to extend the life of your vehicle

Automobiles are significant investments. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for light vehicles was $34,968 in January 2017, marking a 3 percent increase from just a year earlier.

The decision to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a new vehicle is not one consumers should take lightly.

Once drivers purchase their new vehicles, they can protect their investments and get greater returns on those investments by prioritizing maintenance and taking simple yet effective steps to extend the lives of their cars and trucks.

DRIVE DEFENSIVELY

Aggressive driving is dangerous and can have adverse effects on a vehicle. When driving, always obey posted speed limits and avoid accelerating and decelerating quickly. Such a style of driving can strain vehicle engines and drive trains while negatively affecting fuel efficiency and wearing down brakes, states the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.

MAINTAIN A CLEAN VEHICLE

Car washes do more than just clean a vehicle. Routine washing and waxing can remove dirt that, if left on a vehicle, gradually can scratch paint and contribute to chips and rust. Over time, rust can affect vehicle performance and may even compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers if bad enough frame rust affects structural integrity.

Routine washing also can remove road salt from vehicles. Salt can build up during winter when roads are routinely treated during and after snowstorms. Road salt

can be extremely corrosive and, if left unremoved from a vehicle, can contribute to rust that ultimately can cause extensive damage to a vehicle.

ROUTINELY CHECK TIRE PRESSURE

Many of today’s new vehicles alert drivers when tire pressure is low. Drivers should not ignore such warnings, because low tire pressure can affect engine performance by forcing it to work harder than necessary. Engines that are forced to work harder than they need to likely won’t last as long as those that run efficiently.

Low tire pressure also negatively affects fuel efficiency, potentially costing drivers substantial amounts of money over time. Drivers of older vehicles without tire pressure alerts should routinely check tire pressure and keep tires adequately inflated. Vehicles that are slow to accelerate from resting positions may not have enough air in their tires.

ADHERE TO MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES

Drivers may have heard that today’s vehicles were built to go longer periods of time between oil changes and tuneups than the vehicles of yesteryear. But drivers should still adhere to manufacturer-recommended maintenance guidelines. Upon buying new vehicles, drivers should read their owners’ manuals to determine recommended maintenance intervals, and stick to those intervals for as long as they have their vehicles.

5 things to know about connected cars

If you could go back in time and tell people that in the near future there would be a handheld device that would allow them to listen to virtually any song, watch virtually any movie or television show and have access to pretty much any book, they probably would think you were crazy.

As it is, we now take all those features of a smartphone for granted. In fact, what once would have been the stuff of science fiction is now commonplace.

With technology advancing in leaps and bounds around us, perhaps the one thing that has generated the most buzz involves the marriage of the automobile with the computer: a connected car.

To shed some light – and whet your appetite – for current and future car technology, here are five important things to know about connected cars.

Your brakes may be squealing on you. If so, it’s safe to say, you should listen to them.

If your brakes are trying to tell you something, you should pay attention. A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle control and operation and it should be checked immediately if you suspect any problems.

“While an annual brake inspection is a good way to ensure brake safety, motorists should not ignore signs that their brakes need attention,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

“Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.”

Motorists should look for the following warning signs that their brakes need to be inspected: • Noise – screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

• Pulling – vehicle pulls to one side while braking.

• Low Pedal – brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.

• Hard Pedal – you must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.

• Grabbing – brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.

• Vibration – brake pedal vibrates or pulses,

even under normal braking conditions.

• Light – brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.

Because brakes are a normal wear item on any vehicle, they eventually will need to be replaced.

Factors that can affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. Be sure to avoid letting brakes get to the metal-to-metal point as that can mean expensive rotor or drum replacement.

Some telltale signs of engine troubles Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money.

Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home.

SHAKING • VEHICLE One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s

moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing.

That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately.

GAS MILEAGE REDUCTION • SUDDEN Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas

heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately.

• STALLING Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles.

While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.

American-made parts can be key to positive car repair experience The next time you have someone work on your car, it may pay to ask the technician why he or she chose a specific brand of replacement parts.

That’s because a brand name can be a strong indicator of product quality. It can also provide added assurance that the manufacturer will stand behind the product. It might even increase the likelihood that the part was engineered and manufactured in the U.S.A. “U.S. manufacturing can be a strong competitive differentiator in the replacement parts industry,” explained John Perrin, executive director of product management for the North America Aftermarket business of Tenneco, Inc., which manufactures Monroe shock absorbers, struts and other ride control products. “Many consumers are attracted to U.S.-based manufacturers because of the perceived quality, performance and durability advantages of these parts as compared to products imported from offshore manufacturers.”

A vast majority of Monroe ride control products sold in North America are manufactured or assembled in the company’s plant in Paragould, Ark. Last year, the massive facility, with adjacent warehousing and strut assembly manufacturing operations, produced nearly 19 million shocks, struts and Monroe Quick-Strut modular strut assemblies.

The choice of one parts brand over another can affect how your vehicle will perform following the repair. In the case of shocks and struts, the differences could include ride quality; handling precision; noise; vibration and harshness; component durability and even tire

wear.

Quality differences can be even more profound in preassembled modular strut assemblies, which include all the subcomponents – strut, coil spring, upper strut mount, spring seat, isolator, boot kit, and more – needed for a comprehensive strut replacement. While many assemblies might look alike, a single, poorly designed or mismatched part could lead to a performance problem or premature failure.

“There’s a lot of science in a quality strut assembly,” Perrin explained. “You need a coil spring with the proper metallurgy, coil configuration and spring rate for the vehicle.

The damper needs to be tuned to the proper ride and handling profile. Every component can either contribute to or detract from the consumer’s driving experience.”

Given that hundreds of unique strut assembly configurations are required to cover the passenger vehicle population, maintaining U.S.based engineering and assembly operations helps companies more closely control product quality and performance. For example, each Monroe assembly is both fit- and ride-checked on the corresponding vehicle model prior to introduction.

“That would be very difficult to do if we weren’t designing, engineering and manufacturing in the U.S.,” Perrin said.

“We believe that’s an important message for consumers, who deserve to know why a specific brand was chosen for their vehicles.”

Purchasing new tires for your car can be frustrating: an average of two hours is spent researching tires and 89 percent of all consumers experience some sort of buyer’s remorse, according to a consumer study by Cooper Tires.

To help, the experts at Cooper Tires are offering easy ways to identify when you need new tires, as well as tips on what to consider in the tire buying process.

THE PENNY TEST Tire tread should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep.

Check by inserting a U.S. penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s at least a minimum acceptable amount of tread. If the top of his head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace your tires.

Even before tread is worn, regularly inspect tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures, bulges and uneven wear patterns. Also, replace all tires, (including full-size spares) that are 10 or more years older than their date of manufacture, or follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

KNOW THE RIGHT SIZE Like with shoes, buying the proper tire size is critical.

Consult the information placard found on the driver’s side doorjamb, glove box, fuel door or vehicle manufacturer’s manual, which also contains technical specifications relating to your tire, including load carrying capacity, speed rating and recommended inflation pressures.

DIESEL TECHNICIANS Employment of diesel service technicians and mechanics is projected to grow 12 percent by 2024, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The experts at Penske Truck Leasing and Penske Logistics say the growth demand is much higher in many parts of the country.

TRUCK DRIVERS “Nearly 70 percent of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. goes on trucks,” notes the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) website www. trucking.org. “Without the industry and our truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill. To move 9.2 billion tons of freight annually requires nearly 3 million

heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3 million truck drivers.”

The trucking industry has a massive shortage of drivers that continues to grow as qualified drivers age and retire. The ATA estimates the current shortage at roughly 25,000. Industry insiders fear that number will grow in the coming years. Trained drivers ready to hit the road are in high demand. Employers highly value drivers with clean motor vehicle records who place an emphasis on safety.

CORRECTING MISCONCEPTIONS There are many misconceptions about being a truck driver and diesel mechanic.

For example, being a truck driver doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the road for weeks on end. There are many opportunities if you prefer to stay close to home. About 80 percent of Penske Logistics’ 4,500 truck drivers return home every evening thanks to flexible shifts and delivery schedules.

Another common misconception is that being a diesel engine technician means turning wrenches all day. In reality, due to the electronic complexity of today’s diesel vehicles, mechanics must be able to troubleshoot computer systems and problem-solve electronic malfunctions.

This aligns well with the mindset of the next generation of technicians who grew up with smartphones and social networks.

Pickup trucks remain popular among car buyers

Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups.

According to the data and statistics site GoodCarBadCar, Canadian sales of pickup trucks jumped by 8 percent in 2016, equating to roughly 27,000 additional units sold.

A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America.

The automotive news resource The Drive points out the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck for 40 consecutive years.

While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars.

The Ford F-150 was the most popular vehicle among households earning more than $200,000 a year. Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Pilot and Jeep Wrangler were also tops among high-income Americans.

Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds

American-made SUVs dominate in a study of vehicles proven to last at least 200,000 miles, according to the automotive research company iSeeCars.com.

“The research shows that certain cars actually exceed 200,000 miles far more often than others do,” said Phong Ly, the company’s co-founder and CEO. The automotive research firm’s analysis of 13 million pre-owned car sales revealed some interesting information about the longest-lasting cars on the road: • Large SUVs from GM, Toyota and Ford earned the top 7 out of 14 spots, with the SUVs logging 14,407 annual miles (14 percent higher than average); • Domestics beat imports 8 to 6 in the list of longest-lasting cars; • The only passenger cars and sole minivan that ranked are Japanese models from Toyota and Honda; and • In addition to seven SUVs, four pickup trucks made the list: the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150 and GMC Sierra 1500.
