Fishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.

LOCAL PROGRAMS Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events.

These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.

STARTING SIMPLE Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass

on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen.

When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local rivers or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag.

Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip.

HAVE FUN Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting.

If the focus is on catching fish, kids might

grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip.

Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.

BREAK TIME Kids might not have a full day of fishing in them on their first trip. Frequent breaks to explore nearby nature, enjoy a snack or even toss a ball around can keep children from growing bored throughout the day.

Spring is here and it’s time to string the poles and stock the tackle box.

Wisconsin residents who are 16 years old or older need a fishing license to fish in any waters of the state. Residents need a fishing license to take rough fish by hand, hook and line or to spear fish where allowed.

Residents do not need a fishing license to take smelt, rough fish, or minnows with nets, traps, and seines of legal size.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Guide to Wisconsin Spearing, Netting, and Bait Harvest Regulations has more information on additional regulations.

Nonresidents who are 16 years old or older need a nonresident fishing license to fish in Wisconsin waters with hook and line.

Opening day for Wisconsin fishing is traditionally the first Saturday in May. Hook-and-line fishing for many species of fish on many Wisconsin waters begins on that day. However, to better manage Wisconsin fisheries, season dates are often specific to the species of fish as well as the water body.

Professional cyclists spend years honing their skills to compete in the Tour de France and other cycling competi-

tions. However, anyone can improve their cycling abilities with a little practice.

How to become a

BETTER CYCLIST Invest in a custom bike fitting Just about anything can be bought online nowadays, but a bicycle may be one thing to purchase in person. Having a professional at a bicycle shop measure and fit your dimensions

ensures you are getting the right size bike for your needs. Correct fit can alleviate pain, help riders avoid injury and make cycling more enjoyable.

Set saddle height correctly The right saddle height can lead to greater comfort and pedaling ability and muscular efficiency.

The resource Bike Radar says to adjust the saddle height so that the saddle-to-pedal distance is 1.09 X the measurement of the inside of the rider’s leg. Otherwise, aim for a suggested knee angle of 25 to 35 degrees with the pedal at the bottom of the stroke. If the saddle is too low (feet can touch the ground while the bike is upright), riders may become fatigued shortly after beginning a ride.

Employ proper braking It’s good practice to always use both brakes on the bike (front and rear) when coming to a stop. This is achieved by keeping

both hands on the brake hoods or in the drops so that the brake levers are easily grabbed when needed.

Practice balance in different scenarios Many people can balance on a bike to get around. But when faced with traffic, road obstacles or different ground conditions, balance can be tricky.

According to the experts behind the MyFitnessPal app, practice balancing by looking up at the road instead of down at the ground. A low center of gravity, which can be achieved by leaning lower on the handlebars, can make balancing easier as riders steer around turns.

Spectators may be inspired by the stamina and agility of cyclists who compete each year during the Tour de France. The race was first organized in 1903 and has been held annually since its inception.

The Tour de France is a multiple-stage bicycle race that primarily cuts through areas of France while also passing through nearby countries. The race features 21 stages over the course of roughly three weeks.

Research conducted by Breakaway Research Group for People for Bikes found that roughly 100 million Americans ride a bike each year, but only about 14 million bike at least twice a week. Improving basic skills may serve as a catalyst to getting out and enjoying cycling even more.

EXERCISE WITH FRIENDS OR A GROUP Having other people around can make workouts more enjoyable, and that interaction may spur competition that can make you more inclined to stay the course.

People who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports. Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.

HEAD OUTDOORS You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, and cycling on natural courses can be inspiring and burn calories.

All law-abiding adults should have the right to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense, according to concealed carry instructor, Jeff McSwain.

“We live in a very dangerous world today,” he said. “A firearm is the great equalizer.”

McSwain, who teaches classes on his own and is the concealed carry instructor for Reineman’s True Value in Burlington, has 37 years of law enforcement experience, has been a certified firearms instructor since the mid-1980s and is a NRA certified pistol instructor.

Being a certified firearms instructor is required to teach concealed carry.

McSwain, who is certified by Wisconsin, Florida and Utah, has taught nearly 1,100 students in more than 100 classes.

“All 50 states have some form of concealed carry but the requirements vary,” McSwain said.

Choose carefully

McSwain recommends people take

a class taught by someone with law enforcement experience.

“I think that makes all the difference.

My focus, because of my law enforcement background, is based on responsibility, prohibitions, the dos and the don’ts, and it’s based on the law and my experience.

There are some instructors that have no background in law enforcement and have no knowledge of real life situations,” he said.

Reineman’s True Value offers concealed carry classes throughout the year, taught by certified firearms instructor Jeff McSwain.

The classes are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Wisconsin only permits, which are accepted in 30 states including Wisconsin and cost $50. For $100, participants can expand that to include Florida and Utah though it requires at least two more hours of time split between classroom and live shooting.

Remaining classes currently scheduled for 2019 are: May 11, June 8, Aug. 10, Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. Class dates can change and registration is required.

state hunters safety course as training for concealed carry, McSwain said he’s had a number of students who had their permits but decided to take his class.

“They were grateful they took my class because they felt like they didn’t know what they were doing walking around with a gun. Hunters safety is about hunting and has nothing to do with concealed carry,” he said.

The length of a class can also vary, according to McSwain, who said while Wisconsin requires at least a three-hour class his classes go well beyond that.

“We go from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. or so. I devised it myself and it’s about six hours of material squeezed into five hours. If the students ask a lot of questions, which is fine, it goes longer. I don’t end the class according to a time on the clock,” he said.

The initial five or so hour window is for the Wisconsin only class. Those taking the three states version will spend another two-plus hours between additional class instruction followed by live firing at a farm in the area.

“The Wisconsin class meets the other requirements except Florida requires live shooting and Utah requires about an hour of additional teaching on their statutes. There’s no live shooting requirement for the Wisconsin only classes, though students do have to demonstrate they have the ability to load and unload a gun,” McSwain said.

Everything needed for the class is provided but he recommends people bring snacks and lunch, though he does sell candy bars and water to hold them over.

McSwain said while he’s not an expert in the different firearms available, he does have information in class on what he considers to be good compact and sub-compact guns for everyday carry.

weapons, too, he said.

“They were thankful they could now carry a Taser or stun gun… same thing with a billy club or expandable baton. Without a concealed carry permit, it’s unlawful to carry those weapons but with a permit, it’s allowed,” McSwain said.

Be ready to commit

McSwain said every student he teaches gets a satisfaction survey to grade him.

“Over the years I’ve changed the class based off of feedback they’ve given me,” he said.

Similar to his willingness to put in the effort to be effective at teaching, people who decide to get a concealed carry permit need to realize it’s an ongoing process, he said.

“You have to commit. Your journey doesn’t end when you leave my classroom – it’s just begun. Commit to shooting sports and commit to practice,” McSwain said. “You can’t just take the class and think that five years from now you’ll know what to do and do it right.”

In an effort to help people become more comfortable, McSwain also offers live fire classes, which cost $125, a higher cost than his other classes due to the insurance he’s required to have for it.

“It’s all about the confidence and the ability to carry a firearm, shoot it, clean it and so on,” he said.

The live firearms class is held at McSwain’s home near Eagle with the firing portion held at a location between Burlington and East Troy. It’s open to people of any age but requires at least two people and not more than four.

“I need to be able to watch and assess so I have to limit the number of participants,” he said. “I’ve had teenagers to women in their 70s take the class – they know how to operate the firearm and when to use it, in that crisis situation.”

Here’s how to become a tent-pitching pro:

Practice at home Before arriving at the campsite, learn to recognize the parts and instructions for your particular tent. Make sure all equipment is present and in working order.

Buy a footprint Many tent floors are sturdy, but campers can always use a little extra protection against the ground. Footprints are essentially a tarp that fits underneath the floor of the tent as an extra layer of protection, advises REI. They should be slightly smaller than the area of the tent.

Scope out the tent location Avoid sites littered with sticks, stones, roots, or branches. Stay away from low-lying areas that may get soggy in rainstorms. Look for natural windbreaks, and place the tent so the side that has the strongest pole structure is facing the wind.

Make it a team effort Enlist a helper or two to set up the tent.

Ensure all zippers are closed when erecting the tent. Try to push poles through openings instead of pulling on them.

Allow for some wiggle room when extending the poles.

Guylines should follow the seams of the tent where possible, and lines should be pegged down back to front. Guylines help

keep tents sturdy and also keep a rainfly away from the tent body to minimize leakage, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club.

Use daylight to your advantage Set up the tent while it is light outside, and outfit it with anything that will be needed in the middle of the night, such as a lantern and other gear.
