Hunting is a popular hobby and sport enjoyed by millions of people across North America. Over the last 10 years, data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that more and more females are taking up hunting.

Hunting seasons vary depending on where you live. Regulations designed by local conservation, game, fish, and wildlife departments often dictate the start and end of hunting season.

Although the licensing, seasons, limits, and fees for hunting may differ geographically, the preparation that goes into getting ready for hunting season is similar regardless of geography.

Many seasoned hunters realize hunting season does not begin on “opening day.”

Rather, it can take weeks or months to get ready for a successful season.

Considering hunting seasons can be brief, preparation helps hunters make the most of their time spent in the field.

Purchase license, tag or stamp

Many wildlife departments require hunters register in advance of the season, and this registration includes securing a hunting license. Because there is a limit to how many animals each hunter can hunt, tags for the animals they’re hunting also will be issued.

Hunters planning on going out for the season should stay apprised of when licensing and registration begins and ends so they can hunt legally.

Scout areas

The landscape can change from year to year depending on a host of factors, including construction, commercialization and weather. Areas once open to hunting may now be restricted lands. Map out your potential hunting location and be aware of any new landmarks or changes.

Hunting often requires hiking in and out of the great outdoors in various terrain. It’s helpful to increase physical activity leading up to the hunt to prepare your body for the physical demands of hunting.

All hunting licenses are effective immediately after purchase and with the opening of the specific seasons. Gun and archery deer licenses may be purchased before and during any open deer season.

All 2018 deer hunting licenses expire on March 31, 2019.

Persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1973, must present their Wisconsin Hunter Education certificate or proof of a hunter safety course recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources or from another state, province or country, previous year’s Wisconsin hunting license, or proof of successful completion of basic training in the U.S. Armed Forces, Reserves or National Guard to purchase any hunting license.

A certificate of successful completion of a Bow Hunter Education Course can be used to purchase an archery license.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recommends hunters follow these four basic principles of firearm safety – known as TABK: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded; Always point the muzzle in a safe direction;

Be certain of your target and what is beyond it; and Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.

For tree stand users, here are some easy tips to follow: • Always use a full-body harness;

• Always unload your firearm while climbing into or out of the stand; and • Maintain three points of contact during the ascent or descent – two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.

Each deer drive should be planned in advance with safety as the top priority, King said. “Everyone involved in the drive should know and understand the plan.”

If you plan to participate in a deer drive: • Review the four firearm safety principles; • Reconfirm you have positively identified your target; • Reconfirm you have a safe backstop for your bullet; and Review and stick to your hunting plan. Make sure all in the hunting party honor it.

Canadian goose hunting season in the Southern Zone opened on Sept. 16.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is predicting a good hunt this year.

Canadian goose season is open With resident Canada goose breeding numbers similar to recent years and average production of the Ontario breeders, hunters should have ample opportunities this year, and will again enjoy hunting in the Exterior zone with a three-bird daily bag limit.

“When combined with the 15 days of the early season, this puts Wisconsin at 107 days of Canada goose hunting, and the maximum season length allowed by federal law,” said Taylor Finger, Wisconsin Department

of Natural Resources migratory game bird ecologist.

Exterior Zone Canada goose season structure is as follows: • Northern Zone – Sept. 16 to Dec. 16; • Southern Zone – Sept. 16 to Oct. 7 and Oct. 13 to Dec. 2 and Dec. 16 to Jan. 3, 2019; and • Mississippi River Subzone – Sept.29- Oct 5 and Oct. 13 to Jan. 3, 2019.

Hunters should note that the goose season is closed during the duck season split in both the South Zone (closed Oct. 8

Early and Exterior Zone goose permits are printed on regular white paper, rather than green thermal paper. While afield, hunters must carry their Canada goose harvest permit.

Acceptable methods of proof include a paper copy, Go Wild generated PDF displayed on a mobile device, Wisconsin driver’s license or Go Wild Conservation Card.

Avian influenza

Several federal agencies are working in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to collect samples related to the research and surveillance of avian influenza in wild birds. Avian influenza is a viral disease common in wild bird populations with many different subtypes – most do not cause obvious signs of disease in wild birds or have the ability to infect animals other than birds.

While strains currently detected in the United State have caused mortality of domestic birds, they have not resulted in any illness in humans.

Samples will be collected from live-captured birds during DNR banding efforts and from hunter-harvested dabbling ducks, such as blue-winged teal, mallard, wood duck and Northern pintail. Federal staff will also be located at boat landings and other hunter access points this fall to sample ducks from willing hunters.

Pheasant hunting in the state Pheasant hunting has long been a Wisconsin tradition. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the ringnecked pheasant was introduced as a game bird to Wisconsin as early as the late 1800s. Ideal habitat conditions allowed the population to flourish and expand rapidly.

In the 1940s the pheasant population began to decline due to limited habitat availability, modern agricultural practices and urbanization.

Today’s pheasant population is most common in the west-central and southeastern regions of the state.

In response to the population decline, the Pheasant Stamp was created in 1991 to provide funds for pheasant restoration and management.

The management of ring-necked pheasants in Wisconsin is in large part due to revenues generated from the sale of the Pheasant Stamp.

Habitat projects funded by Pheasant Stamp dollars along with countless partner dollars and efforts have managed, preserved and restored thousands of acres of nesting and winter habitat.

iking is a popular and accessible outdoor activity.

According to the American Hiking Society, since the National Trail System was established under President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, the mileage of trails on federal lands has increased almost three-fold, from 88,000 to more than 193,000 in 2015.

During that same time period, mileage of trails on state lands has increased from 15,000 to 42,500. And all those trails aren’t going to waste, as the Outdoor Industry Association notes that more than 34 million people went hiking in 2013.

Hiking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but veteran and novice hikers must emphasize safety when traversing the trails.

Even hikers going on relatively brief hikes should pack supplies so they’re safe. Pack supplies such as a compass, a map of the trails you’ll be traversing, some basic first aid materials (band-aids, gauze, an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, etc.), extra water, and extra food.

Such supplies may be precautionary, but they’re potentially invaluable if hikers get lost or suffer an injury during their hikes.

Hike only in daylight hours

Hiking during the day allows hikers to take in nature at its sun-soaked best while reducing their risk of getting lost.

In addition, park rangers and employees may not be working or accessible overnight. And depending on where hikers are hiking, trails may be home to nocturnal animals that may be startled by and aggressive toward men, women and children walking through their domains.

When hiking, be sure to turn back at a time of day that ensures you can return to your vehicle in daylight.

Let loved ones know your plans All hikers, but especially those hiking alone, should let loved ones

know they’re going hiking and exactly where they plan to hike. This can make it easier for park rangers or rescue teams to find you if you get lost. In addition to letting others know your plans, leave a note in the glove compartment of your vehicle explaining where you plan to hike.

Know the forecast

Weather can change at the drop of a hat, so before heading out, hikers should check the local forecast and make any necessary adjustments to stay safe. Be sure to include a rain jacket, sunscreen, ballcap, and warm clothing among your supplies to account for unexpected inclement weather. Shorten hiking excursions if storms are in the forecast.

Stay within your abilities

Some people may consider hiking a leisure activity, but many trails can be physically challenging. Hikers should stay within their capabilities and steer clear of trails they do not feel like they can traverse safely.

Stop by the park’s visitor’s center prior to beginning a hike so you can get a list of trails and identify which ones are best suited to your abilities.

This fall, hunters may spot collared or ear-tagged whitetail deer in the fields and woods of southwest Wisconsin. These deer have been tagged as part of a mortality study by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and are legal to harvest.

“The most important thing for hunters to know is that collared and tagged deer are just like the rest of the deer in the area,” said Daniel Storm, Department of Natural Resources deer research scientist.

“DNR staff collared a random sample of deer, so the collars do not indicate anything about the deer’s health or suitability for harvest.

Hunters should make their decision without regard for GPS collars.

Collared and tagged deer are absolutely OK to harvest.”

The deer are collared as part of the Southwest Wisconsin Chronic Wasting Disease, Deer and Predator Study, a five-year investigation into deer mortality. To date, DNR researchers have placed GPS collars on 328 adult deer in portions of Grant, Iowa and Dane Counties.

The goal of this project is to comprehensively examine factors that could impact deer survival and deer population growth in southern Wisconsin. Those include CWD, depredation, habitat suitability and hunter harvest.

“We’re collaring deer over several years, and this sample will be the foundation for understanding deer mortality for the entire herd in the region. We know that one of the mortality causes for deer is hunter harvest, so we hope that our collared deer will be treated like any other deer by hunters this fall. If you would otherwise harvest a collared deer, go ahead and take it. If you would let it pass by, go ahead and let it go,” Storm says.

Hunting licensing and normal harvest regulations apply equally to collared deer as they do to uncollared deer. “The only additional ask is that hunters who harvest collared deer call the number listed on the collar (608-935-1940) so we can come retrieve it,” says Storm.

First things first: knowing how to operate your snowmobile properly is the most fundamental part of your safety on the trails. And one of the best ways to learn is by taking a snowmobile safety course.

Not only will a snowmobile safety course teach you more about your winter cruiser, it will also cover important riding techniques and snowmobiling etiquette.

You can learn rules of the trail, brush up on state laws, and adopt these vital hand signals: • Left turn – left arm straight out; • Right turn – left arm out, forearm raised at a 90-degree angle; • Slowing down – left arm angled toward the ground; and • Stopping – left arm straight up in the air.

Use safe speeds

Sure, snowmobiles are designed for speed – but it’s important to use discretion.

Speeding is one of the major causes of snowmobile accidents. Always keep total control of your snowmobile, and take extra caution at night.

Riding on ice

Here’s a good rule of thumb for riding on frozen bodies of water: don’t. Though this is common for snowmobilers, there’s no guarantee that ice (no matter how thick) will support the weight of a snowmobile and its rider. And when snowmobilers break through the ice, the result is often deadly.

If you really must drive on a frozen lake or river, at least throw on a life jacket.

Beware of hidden obstacles

It may feel like you’re flying over the snow, but your sled is still vulnerable to objects hidden below the surface – think tree stumps, rocks, and fences. Hitting one of these can leave you in a world of hurt.

Scout your terrain before riding.

Don’t drink and ride

Drunken driving is drunken driving no matter what you’re driving. Slowed reaction time, altered perception, and impaired ability mean danger for everyone.

That’s reason enough not to mix alcohol and snowmobiling – but did you know that booze can also make you more vulnerable to hypothermia? Alcohol makes you feel warm, which can cover up symptoms when you’re on a frigid trail.

Ride with friends

There’s safety in numbers. Use the buddy system whenever possible, and avoid heading out on your own. If you must ride solo, at least inform others of your plan.

Always be prepared

The Boy Scout motto rings true even in the snowmobiling world – be ready for anything.

Wear protective gear

There’s plenty of safety gear out there to choose from. The “musts” include a helmet that meets U.S. Department of Transportation standards, goggles and reflective clothing.

Hopefully these tips will help you stay safe while enjoying your snowmobile. But snowmobile safety is more than just being careful on the trail – don’t forget to protect your investment and yourself by insuring it.
