“I have known from a very young age that I was meant for big things, even coming from a small town in Wisconsin. I would practice my runway walk in my mom’s heels (which were much too big for me at the time but I have now grown into them hopefully both figuratively as well as literally) back and forth, over and over, from the time I was in first grade and took those very first modeling pictures.”
CHASING THE DREAM
LOOKING FOR MORE However, she always knew she was destined for something more. “I knew I wanted to do bigger things than the Midwest market had to offer at the time,” Petrie said. “So as soon as I graduated college I started to travel as much as I could afford to, while still being home often to help take care of my mom. I eventually decided I wanted to focus on the market in Miami, so I moved down there with no help, no money, and I hustled until I found an agent that signed me and started getting me work with Saks and Neiman MarcusOnceregularly.”shegotataste of the possibilities, Petrie’s confidence grew and she decided to branch out even more. Her agency wasn’t helping her grow with new markets such as New York or Europe, so she took matters into her own hands. She submitted her stuff to the Sports Illustrated Swim search, and wouldn’t you believe it – she got picked. Nicole beat out thousands of other models, and she will be in this year’s famed swimsuit issue. “I’m so proud of this accomplishment not only because of how hard I worked to get to this point but because I get to use this platform to raise awareness for FTD, a disease that has affected multiple people in my family but that no family should have to go through, and that I am reaching so many caregivers and showing them they are not alone,” Petrie Frontotemporalsaid.
degeneration (FTD) is caused by progressive damage and loss of nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the Petrie’sbrain.mother suffers from it, so she is a regular caregiver for her along with being a model.Petrie earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a scholarship to play collegeNow,volleyball.it’salifeof flying around the world to the most remote, exotic locations and living out her dreams. Not bad for a girl from a small town like LakeAsGeneva.earlyas first grade, Petrie was taking “modeling pictures” and practicing her runway walk. She even printed out copies of her picture and gave it to teachers and principals at school, so they could remember her “when I become a famous supermodel.”Well, thattime has come. Petrie is a living, breathing example that dreams really do come true.
Before she embarked on her trip to Nicaragua, she added one more Facebook post around 10 p.m. May 16. “Don’t want to go to sleep tonight because my dreams came true today. One lesson my mom made sure to really drive into my personality: You can do anything you set your mind to! Never give up and your hard work will pay off!!! In first grade I was already watching #ANTM (America’s Next Top Model) daily and one day convinced my parents to take “modeling pictures” of me, which I then printed out on glossy photo paper, signed with a black sharpie and took multiple copies to school with me to hand out to my teachers, school staff, and principals. I told them it was so they could remember that I was their student “when I become a famous supermodel”… manifestation, baby!! (If any of that school staff still has that picture for some reason pls send my way)...
SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES 7 was not a great experience (bad coaches, bad teammates, etc.),” Petrie said. “I lost my passion for the game and decided I didn’t want to play anymore. But, at that point I was used to practicing or working out like three times a day and not having any free time, so I decided I needed a new hobby.“Ididn’t know then that the hobby I ended up choosing would turn into my new passion and later my career. My friends and family had suggested to me many times throughout my life that I could be a model because of my height, but I never knew how to get started. But with the boredom growing, I reached out to a friend of a friend that asked a photographer they knew if they would do a test shoot with me in Chicago.”So,Petrie took a big chance, and it paid off.She submitted photos from this photographer to an agency in Madison and started doing small jobs here and there.

MIKE RAMCZYK Spirit of Geneva Lakes
CORRESPONDENT Valerie Kowalski is no stranger to heartbreak.Thepast three years have forced the 33-year-old Waterford native to grow up faster than she’s wanted. From leaving the corporate world as a bigtime chef to venturing out on her own with a catering business and restaurant, Kowalski has loved, lost, loved again, and lost even more. But she always finds her way back up, and takes things to a newer, higher level. Her story epitomizes the struggles of the pandemic – shock, change and rebirth.
Cafe B’s new owner had a tough stretch, but is now on the way up by Mike Ramczyk
Valerie Kowalski works in the kitchen of Café B, which she recently purchased. She plans to expand the business to include lunch service. The café is in the Burlington Loop in the city’s downtown.
“I love it, love it, yes,” Kowalski said about cooking inside her business Cafe B, in the Burlington Loop. “I just always had a passion for cooking. My friend’s dad was the chef at Milwaukee Athletic Club, and he took us on a tour there. I just fell in love with it. I was like, ‘This is what I want to do.’” “My heart and soul is in cooking. Baking is kind of like the minor to my major of cooking.”TheMadison Area Technical College culinary school grad likes to bake, and cook, and she does a lot of it. At her corporate chef job at Epic in Verona, they would serve 15,000 people a day. She’s been all over, whether it’s the corporate world, or restaurants, or her own ventures.Inearly 2022, she took over Cafe B, which was located at the corner of Chestnut and Dodge streets a few blocks down from the Loop.Fast forward, and by May, Kowalski opened up in the former Hopscotch Cakery building in the Loop, and she now owns and operates the large kitchen for preparing sweet treats and the storefront, where she sells bestsellers like bear claws, quiches and more. With grand plans already to rebrand soon, Kowalski is driven, hardworking and committed to making good food for the people of Burlington.
“I left my cushy, corporate job as a chef and ambitiously bought my own business, bought a catering business, took it over, and what could possibly go wrong? It was eight months before the pandemic, and we just had no idea,” Kowalski said.
“On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, we had three weddings in one weekend. It was March 2020. All the weddings got smaller, and I only did two weddings during the pandemic. We became the preferred caterer around the Wisconsin Dells area, Devil Lake and more. The pandemic decided it was done. We had a lot of bookings in place. Suddenly, everything was cancelled. Everything, everything…I watched my whole business overnight, it was gone.”Bythe summer of 2020, she created a restaurant, The Marketplace, and it was enough to hold on to just pay the bills. But catering never came back, and it wasn’t sustainable.“Ihadto let go of the business, I couldn’t afford it anymore,” Kowalski said. She lost her business, and her dream house

“I was making enough in the mornings to stay afloat,” Kowalski said. “I had this whole town’s support on the move, and I couldn’t believe it.
“My slowest days here are my busiest days sales-wise there (where she was on Chestnut and Dodge.)”
Above: Café B is in the Burlington Loop in the city’s downtown at 133 E Chestnut Street. Left: Baking is a passion that Valerie Kowalski turned into a business.
Cafe B is currently open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Puff pastries and bear claws are the top draws, but Kowalski is shifting gears.
“It came about because I want to focus more on lunch. I am a chef. I’m going to do soups, salads, sandwiches. I drink endless amounts of coffee, and it’s an endless cycle. It’s like an infinity symbol.” Her specialty for lunch will be a salad with roasted butternut, sweet potato, roasted red onion, squash salad with in-house scratch vinaigrette with pecans, craisins and goat cheese.Shesays it’s “very healthy.”
“I said the pandemic finally got me, mom.” That was April of 2021, where she was still running and operating the Marketplace in SaukSheCity.knew a change was needed, and she wanted to keep cooking.
But Valerie’s food – and personality –speaks for “Downtownitself.Burlington is up-andcoming,” Kowalski said. “The Loop has like seven female owners. The Loop is up and coming. I think Burlington should be the city of weddings, instead of trails. It would help so many places. There are hotels, Rustic Roots, Cafe B, the Coffeehouse, so many nice, beautiful things to do down here. The Loop is growing, it’s moving and shaking. There are younger business owners. Ninety-five percent of the businesses down here are womenowned. All of us are pretty tight, we have a good network going, and we support each other.”
MIKE RAMCZYK Spirit of Geneva Lakes
Kowalski hopes to open Infinity Coffee and Beyond by the end of this year or 2023.
The former owner of the space, Meghan Schroeder, announced on Facebook she was closing Hopscotch Cakery earlier this year, and Kowalski’s phone rang off the hook. Three different people called and told her to look into moving into the heart of the Loop. So she made the leap, as business was starting to pick up, and now she has even biggerEventually, plans. she wants to rebrand and get back into cooking by expanding Cafe B’s mostly breakfast menu into lunch as well.
SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES 11 in Sauk Prairie. The serene setting overlooked the Wisconsin River with picturesque views, and she would watch birds and all the boaters. Kowalski hit rock bottom But that entrepreneurial spirit still coursed through her veins, and she would spend weekends looking for store spaces to get back into cooking, or baking, or whatever. She was willing to consider anything with a nice“Thekitchen.hammer dropped on my birthday,” Kowalski said. “I called my mom, saying I’m going to lose my business. I saw the writing on the wall. I said I was losing my business and my house, and for the next few months I had a lot of figuring out to do.”
“I’m very private, but people will watch me working through the windows, and it’s just something I’m getting used to,” she said. “I’ll get some nice, old ladies that will ask me about my place. I had a guy from Racine, he just wouldn’t go away, and I opened up and said hello. I was making turnovers, and he was like ‘Can I buy those right now?’”
“This town doesn’t have much of a healthy lunch option,” she said. “She has a few menu items. Infinity Coffee and Beyond is soon to be coming. It’s my own entity, my own business, and there are no past ties. I have to burn my own trails, now. I want it to be something I created.
Plus, there will be a whole grain chicken salad sandwich, another favorite from her previousKowalskirestaurant.opened up and laughed loud when speaking about her ultimate dream.
Weekends are three times busier Kowalski finds herself baking – with see-through windows – in the large, fully self-designed kitchen, and kids will bring over their Hansen’s ice cream cones and just sit there and state in awe.
“Business doubled since I moved in here (the new location in the Loop), and a rough marriage just doesn’t work when you’re both running a business,” Kowalski added.
“Within my price range and practically in the backyard of my hometown, Cafe B was for sale,” Kowalski said. “I was looking online and everywhere. Danielle had to sell quickly, and I figured I had to buy rather quickly. It used to be Chocolate Expression. She named it ‘Cafe B’ after her name Bowman, so now I tell people it means Cafe Burlington.”Kowalski started making dough, puff pastry, turnovers, bear claws and other tasty delectables from scratch. She made laminated dough in a class in college, and a lot of the dishes come from that background. “Baking is very much an exact science, there isn’t much wiggle room,” Kowalski said. “If you mess it up, you mess it up bad. With cooking, you can alter things, cook them longer and fix them.” There were no plans for moving to Burlington, and it was Valerie and her husband at the time. Long story short, in her words, it didn’t work out. So now she was really all alone, starting another new business, and not exactly living in aValeriehome. actually stayed in the building attached to Cafe B, and there were all kinds of hard“Ittimes.sucked,” she said. “I was coasting in on fumes. And it was always falling on me to make an income.” “I had a roof over my head, but the building leaked. It would rain inside. There were a ton of bugs, mice, there was a lot of damage. There was a lot to contend with.”
Things began to slowly turn around when Kowalski continued on her own, after splitting from her marriage in December, and January was like a new day.

It’s no secret that people have spent a great deal more time at home in the past two years as the coronavirus limited travel and social interaction. Finding the right fence
For Roger Aronson, who has been building fences in the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin area since 1994, the last few years have been a time of growth for his company as more homeowners have added decorative fencing to their property. While the fencing has a decorative look, it is also serving an important“Peoplepurpose.buildfences for basically two purposes, to keep their children and dogs on the property and safe, and to keep strangers out,” said Roger Aronson, owner, and founder of Aronson fencing. “It also serves to add a finished, attractive look to the property.”
Good fences make good neighbors
top: A decorative fence of aluminum is perfect for around swimming pools or the entire yard. right: This is a type of fence often used on farms with horizontal boards that keep the livestock in while not obstructing the view of the land. While traditionally made of wood, this one is a vinyl fence.
The COVID pandemic, which has influenced so many of our lives, has also affected the business world in many ways, some positive and some negative. On the positive side, with many people staying home or working from home, they have become more aware of repairs or additions needed to make their property more beautiful and to meet the needs of their families. Many of them were excited to add beautiful new fences to bring a positive look, or to replace a sad old fence. Many families adopted dogs during their stay at home and now that they are returning somewhat to pre-COVID life, they realize they have to find time, either to walk the dogs or provide an area where they can be let out safely for exercise. On the negative side, supply chains have been interrupted, making supplies difficult to obtain and material costs have risen. Some contractors have had a wait list of up to 6 months to receive their orders. At times there has been a shortage of workers also adding to delays.“This has been a challenging time for us. As the orders continue to come in for new fences, the supply chain delays tend to back us up. Coupled with the supply chain delays, the sudden price increases have been a problem for homeowners. While some of the polyvinyl fences have been in short supply, they are now back into better control,” said Aronson. “Our weather these past two summers has also made construction a bit more difficult. When the ground is too wet trying to build a fence may result in destroying the landscape. So, we have to wait.”

Business is booming for Aronson Fence Co. by Sandra Landen Machaj
ARONSON FENCE PHOTOS Spirit of Geneva Lakes
Aronson offers a variety of fence styles and materials to allow the homeowner to find the perfect fence for their needs and the look they desire. Among the choices are wooden cedar fences, aluminum fences, or polyvinyl fences. Each has a different price point and style.“One of the advantages we have had is our long standing working relationship with a mill in northern Michigan that cuts our cedar boards to order. We did not have difficulty receiving our custom cut cedar boards during this period,” Aronson said. “Some mills prefer to sell the logs intact to log cabin builders rather than having to slice them up. We did not have that problem with our mill and our custom fence boards remained available. Some fence installers use preordered cedar fences but Aronson Fence Company always provides cedar fences that are custom cut to order.“Another advantage of our cedar fence is that we use only high quality cedar and have them cut ¾ inch thick rather than the ½ inch thick that is the industry standard. The thicker board gives a much sturdier fence,” according to Aronson. “We also use stainless steel nails, that don’t bleed into the wood, in the building of the fence. These nails have a strong holding power for a strong fence that will stand up for many years in our Midwest winters.”
Factors to consider The most popular height for fences is 4 feet but privacy fences can be built as high

Company keeps growing
As their business has increased in the last two years, Aronson has also opened a second location. Located in Union Grove, this location is a working location for the crews to store materials thus making it easier and more efficient to get the fencing to the worksite. They have not yet opened a customer showroom at that site. Just learning about the types and styles of fencing? If you are unsure about what you need, stop in at the showroom in Wauconda and view the many choices available. Or call and set up an appointment to be held either at the showroom or at your home with the estimator. One of our estimators will be happy to evaluate your needs. There is no charge to meet with an estimator. The estimator will help you choose the style of fence that will be best for your needs, give you the best look for your property, and will work with you within your budget.
The metal ornamental fences are often used as decorative fences around a property and they may be the preferred fence to be placed around a pool. These fences have a clean look. The pool needs a fence for safety and having an ornamental fence that allows a view into the pool from outside, increasing the safety of the pool as you can see what is going on in the pool from out on the deck.
With the increase in business the past couple of years, Aronson has increased to seven full time estimators and increased their construction crews by an additional 3 teams, making 13 crews available to install fences. These extra crews were needed to cover the increase of installations in the Wisconsin area.

Chain link fences are often used for security because they are easy to install easy to repair, require little maintenance, are very durable and secure. Vinyl fences, also known as PVC fences are becoming more popular due to their versatility. The vinyl fences are not custom made but are available in over 30 styles and in many different colors to match or enhance your décor. They will last many years and are very maintenance free. There are decorative caps that can be added to the vinyl posts to give the fence a special look. Among the different styles are an antique copper look or a sleeker stainless steel cap. You choose the style that fits your property’s style. For an additional glitzy look, consider adding LED, eco-friendly solar lights on the posts.
“In spite of the difficulties of the past year, we have continued to grow,” said Aronson. “We continue to increase the number of fences installed each year. We now install about 1,400 fences each year making us the largest fence installing company in the area. We have increased our area and now install fences as far as the suburban Milwaukee area.”Since they install fences throughout northern Illinois and the entire southern Wisconsin area, into the Milwaukee suburbs, Kenosha, west to Lake Geneva and Delavan, they have made some changes to better service the area. The large showroom in Wauconda, Illinois, is near Highway 12 in that suburb. It has a large indoor and outdoor display area for customers to view the many styles of fences available and the many different materials that they have available.
“We are a full-service company. We even assist the customer in obtaining the building permits, something that many other companies do not do. We do our best to go above and beyond the expected service,” said Aronson. “We also offer financing programs to make the purchase of your fence doable. We want you to be satisfied.”

Another choice is to paint the fence but remember that painted fences need to be repainted every few years. They each have their own sets of rules and time periods when and where hunters are allowed to Accordinghunt.”toSpesard, each type of hunting requires its own equipment, its own clothing, its own “Whenseason.hunting waterfowl, you not only need a shotgun and ammunition but you also need camo clothing, boots, waders, a custom caller, and decoys to attract the water fowl. You may also need a boat, a hunting dog, or a blind to work out of,” he added.

Deer hunters must be 50% covered in blaze orange when hunting. That is, they must wear a hat and vest in that color so that they are seen by other hunters. Blaze pink is also acceptable and is usually worn by women hunters. While the majority of deer hunters are male there are also some female hunters, such as Jenny Talbert, one of the employees at Elkhorn Gun Barrel. “I have four children,” said Talbert, “A deer yields a lot of meat to feed my family.”

When one considers buying a condo, they are usually planning on purchasing a place to live for their family, either as a full time home or a vacation residence. But Elkhorn Motor Condos are not homes for the family but homes for the family’s big toys. Toys such as classic automobiles, boats, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles need somewhere to be stored and the family’s garage usually is not large enough to accommodate the family cars and special vehicles that are part of the family’s fun.
FOR Condos cars
SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes much time on his hands.” Dale loves anything with a motor so it is not surprising that he has collected a variety of “toys” with motors. He also began to research this new motor condo concept that was starting to blossom in various areas of the country.“Hepurchased a classic Chevy for me because it was from the year I was born,” said Patty Hargrave. “He also began to research the then new concept of motor condos that was starting to grow around the country. Although there were none located in Walworth County, Dale felt this was the perfect spot to develop a motor condo development since there were many residents with boats, motorcycles, classic automobiles, and large scale recreational vehicles that needed a place to store them.” When a piece of property became available next to a building they already owned, Patty encouraged Dale to purchase it, and consider whether he wished to pursue the dream of developing a motor condo.

For 42 years Dale Hargrave owned Hargrave Builders, Inc. in the western suburbs of Chicago. As a full time builder, he worked hard and was proud of his work, but he also put in long hours. Six years ago, he sold his business and moved with his wife Patty to southern Wisconsin, “It was a busy time with Dale always at work so I looked forward to our retirement as a time to relax and enjoy time together,” said Patty Hargrave. “That worked for a while, then Dale, like many men who had worked hard for so many years, became bored with so

“The stone accents on the outside walls were among the materials that were late to arrive. We expected to have the stone installed a couple of months ago, but due to delays in delivery, it was completed last month,” Patty said. ”Now we are waiting for the delivery of our secure entry gate. Once it is installed, there will be safe access 24/7.”
Elkhorn Motor Condos is at 1503 N. Country Club Parkway, Elkhorn. Call 847833-2390 for more information or to make an appointment to visit the space. Or visit them on line at elkhornmotorcondos.com. Their next Open House will be held onsite on Saturday Oct. 8.
“In spite of the fact that owners may have many amenities in their motor condo, there is one thing that is not allowed. Owners cannot spend the night and sleep in the unit as it is not zoned for living space,” added Patty
The Hargraves expect many of the owners will become friends as they share their interests in classic cars, motorcycles, boating, or RV living.
“The builder in him returned. After learning more about these special condos, he was excited to build his own motor condo building,” said Patty Hargrave. “The property we had purchased in an industrial area was perfect for the project.” While there were no such buildings in the Elkhorn area, this did not dissuade the Hargraves from pursuing a permit to build the condos.“Ittook a year before we were ready to begin building, with all the permits in hand, architectural designs created and approved, ordering the required materials in this difficult time, and finding enough workers to create the buildings, ” Patty said. “We felt there was a need in this area, where there are so many people who owned classic cars that they did not want to leave out in the cold Wisconsin winter. Or they owned recreational vehicles that needed to be stored through the summer until they were ready to be taken out to travel to warmer climes in the winter.” Their goal was to create a quality space that owners would be pleased to own and that was located in an area that was convenient for them. They sought high quality and attention to detail so that each unit was a quality condo. The units vary in size from 25 to 75 feet wide and from 25 to 50 feet deep allowing purchasers to choose the size that best meets their needs for the number of vehicles they wish to store and depending on what else they wish to do in the space. “For some the condo is the place they choose to work on their vehicle,” Dale said. “Each unit can hold two to 20 autos depending on the size one chooses”
The units are sold with the main floor completed and roughed in plumbing for the possible addition of an in-unit bathroom or utility sink if the owners care to add one. Many of the owners build a second floor mezzanine which can be used as an office or as a gathering room for friends and family. Because of the high ceiling in the unit, the second floor mezzanine can be added with plenty of headroom and increases the available usable space in the unit.
“We also offer some amenities for the owners. There is a community space which includes both a male and female restroom and a community room with a small kitchen where owners can gather, share information about their cars, enjoy lunch or sit and watch television,” said Patty. Once the spaces are sold, the owners can decorate them to their taste. Some may choose to keep a garage/workspace look while others may turn the space into an elegant office or room to gather, especially if they build the second floor mezzanine.
According to Dale, these are high efficiency buildings. There is R-21 insulation in the exterior wall and R-32 in the ceiling insuring the high efficiency of the building. Each unit is dry walled with R-19 insulation between the units, which will help to provide someTheresoundproofing.isafloordrain in each unit. The floors themselves are reinforced concrete. There are four 120 V double duplex outlets, and four efficient LED eight-foot light fixtures. Each unit is equipped with a 100 amp electric panel to provide the necessary electric power for the unit and any changes that are made by the owners, There are three buildings arranged around a central courtyard of reinforced concrete where owners access their units. When completed, a gate will prevent others from entering the campus. Each owner will have access to the entrance of the complex.
above: Elkhorn Motor Condos is a new concept being built in Elkhorn to house high-end toys that just don’t fit in the at-home garage. top: This view from the street shows the condo building with stone trim. The complex will have a locked security gate allowing only owners to enter. Security cameras will be monitored to keep the units and their contents safe.

Hargrave.Whenthe units were started, they expected to have them completed early this year. Unfortunately, that was not to be. Things went slower with construction than they expected. Due to the supply chain shortages and the difficulty finding construction help, they are completing this project much later than expected. But in spite of the delays, they have been able to maintain the quality they expect. The units will be completed this fall.
Although they expected the motor condos to be well received as there seemed to be a need for indoor storage of their motor vehicles, they were not sure. They were pleasantly surprised when they received 35 inquiries about the spaces when they put up the website and began to advertise their“Weavailability.havealready sold five of the 16 spaces and have had a lot of interest in the project,” added Patty Hargrave. “While interest in these large mechanical toys usually begins with the men of the family, it is not long until it becomes a family affair.”
