For all seasons A pause in events as the result of the coronavirus pandemic gave the City of Lake Geneva the opportunity to perform an upgrade to the Riviera building on the lakefront in the heart of the city’s downtown. The work – most of it focused on the secondfloor ballroom – removed tired and dated fixtures and installed heating and ventilation that will enable yearround use of the facility for weddings, events and other gatherings. Blast Walworth County Fair runs through Labor Day weekend
The 172nd Annual Walworth County Fair will be held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St., Elkhorn, from Wednesday, Sept. 1 through Labor Day, Sept. 6. This year the theme of the fair is “Jam Packed Fun in 2021.” Visitors to the largest county fair in Wisconsin will be able to explore almost 100 acres of fair activities.
Music headliners
Music has always filled the air and this year will be no different. The fair planners have done their best to bring a variety of musical acts to perform. On Saturday Sept. 4, country singer Justin Moore will appear on the Grandstand Main Stage at 7:30 pm. Moore has had a series of No. 1 singles on the Billboard country chart. Tickets for the event can be purchased online for $20 general admission (standing) or $25 to $45 for reserved seating. An entry ticket to the fair is also required. On Sunday evening, for King and Country, a Christian pop duo consisting of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone will appear on the Grandstand Main Stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this event can be purchased online for $20 for general

admission (Standing) or $30 to $45 for reserved seating. Since the 171st fair was so limited last year, people are ready to return to a full slate of activities where families and friends can enjoy all the fair has to offer.
Fair showcase
The fair is a favorite time for young people who are interested in showcasing projects that they have worked on either through group activities or on their own. 4-H members are not the only participants in the competitions. Members of the FFA and independent groups also compete with their projects. The contests range from food preparation such as canning, gardening, baking, and flowers, to cake decorating, team building skills, and the traditional animal and cattle raising – with each student hoping his or her project will be the Grand Champion. This family friendly festival offers many activities to keep children busy. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
These include the award-winning Barnyard Adventure Educational Area with a touchless tour with learning stations. A stop in the butterfly barn is also a favorite of children. While there, they will learn about the butterfly, its unique life cycle and its foods of choice. The butterfly barn holds about 250 butterflies, which they stock with the caterpillars in the spring, and allow them to go through their life cycle. Two new activities this year are the Ninja event and Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure for children to enjoy. There are also the traditional horse shows and kids’ pedal tractor pull.
Rides and food at the fair
It would not be a festive fair without the carnival rides and attractions. For many eating their way through the fair is their way of enjoying the day. From the traditional hamburgers, hot dogs, pork sandwiches, and bratwurst to the popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and soft drinks,

A diversity of wine
AREA OFFERS A FULL SPECTRUM OF WINE EXPERIENCES
Those who enjoy sipping from a bottle of red, white or blush wine but find that a trip to the Bordeaux region of France simply isn’t in the cards right now needn’t give up their desires to visit a winery or vineyard. Wineries and fully functioning vineyards and orchards dot the landscape of the Geneva Lakes Area. In fact, wine afficionados don’t have to go far to find award-winning wines made from a variety of locally grown fruits. Visiting a local winery or vineyard can be educational and fun. Wine tours can be entertaining because some allow visitors to choose their own tasting adventure depending on their level of interest in wine, their budget and what they would like to get out of the experience. Some wineries and vineyards offer extensive tours of the harvesting and production aspects of wine-making. Others will give visitors a chance to mingle among wine barrels and witness the fermentation process. Still, some wineries or vineyards may limit visitors to tasting rooms where
they can sample select vintages. Thanks to the relatively short Wisconsin growing season, the types of fruits used – whether its grape, apples or pears – will be quite different from one winery to the next. According to viniculture experts from Professional Friends of Wine, grapevines are fairly adaptable plants that can thrive in a variety of soil types and temperatures. Soil, sun exposure, drainage, and topography all play roles in how the grapes will ripen and taste. The chance to support a local business is another reason to make a trip to a nearby winery or vineyard. These facilities often produce wine and sell it close to home. By supporting small business, consumers can contribute to the success and the diversity of offerings where they live. Wine tastings are an enjoyable recreational pursuit. Remember to drink responsibly, and join the mailing lists of nearby wineries and vineyards to learn more about tasting events and food pairings. Here’s a closer look at three wineries and two shops in the Geneva Lakes Area.
ÆPPELTREOW WINERY AND DISTILLERY
“ÆppelTreow” is Old English, and is a play on words for “true to the apple” or “apple truth,” according to owner Charles McGonegal. The name is pronounced “Apple true.” ÆppelTreow is Wisconsin’s only winery and distillery. It is well known for producing perry, which is pear cider produced in the English tradition. The pears are specifically to be used for producing perry, and offer properties and flavors that can’t be faked by using other pears. McGonegal said he imagined ÆppelTreow as a fruit winery, but the facility produces cider, perry and spirits.

APPLE BARN ORCHARD AND WINERY
The Apple Barn, in Elkhorn, has been a favorite of customers for many years. Six generations of the Jacobson family have made their home on this land and continue the family tradition of farming the land and caring for their fruit orchards. Around 2004, the Jacobson’s introduced a new product that has become one of their most popular. “In the 1990s, my husband, Steve, began experimenting with wine making after he received a home wine-making kit from his mother as a gift,” Judy Jacobson said. “As he experimented with making wines, he turned from making grape wines to experimenting with other fruit wines. As he became more interested in the various types of wine that he produced, we considered making a few wines to sell on site at the Apple Barn.” They began to produce fruit wines on site. What began as a hobby, then moved on to a small addition to the business. It didn’t stop there as the Apple Barn is now producing more than a dozen varieties of wine. The wines are made from fruits such as strawberries, apples, rhubarb, pears, and cranberries. While most people assume that these fruit wines would all be sweet, they are not “Our wines range from dry to sweet,” Jacobson said. “Most of the wines are in the semi-sweet range. We do not add any enhancements or coloring to our wines, so the color and flavor comes from the fruit used The Apple Barn is at W6384 Sugar Creek Rd., Elkhorn. interested in wine. “It’s always going to be different,” Staller said. “The wine is always going to change. You’re never going to get the same growing season, there’s always going to be a variety in how your wines are going to taste.” Staller produces more than a dozen varieties of wine and port using those grapes, and relishes every step. “I enjoy everything,” Staller said. “It doesn’t matter whether were picking grapes, bottling wines – I enjoy every aspect of it.” Staller Estate is at W8896 Highway A, Delavan. A flea market finale
173952
Pickers have a final chance in 2021 on Sept. 26
The Elkhorn Antique Flea Market will wrap up its 40th season Sept. 26 with its final event of 2021 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St. The market features eight buildings filled with treasure-sellers and many more dealers outside. An average of about 500 vendors and dealers bring with them a wide range of merchandise from rough to fine refinished furniture, glassware to pottery, advertising to linens, decoys to dolls and everything else in between, according to organizers. The hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it’s held rain or shine. Tickets are $5 at the gate and parking is available free of charge. The market offers paved walkways. There are plenty of food options available at the markets, from dessert and snacks to sandwiches and Wisconsin cheese curds. In the past several years, antique items have become increasingly trendy. While most vendors said they were pleased vintage items continue to remain in circulation, some said they didn’t concern themselves with how popular something is. On antique flea market event days, the fairgrounds
quickly fill up with customers and attendees often bargaining over prices. And it’s not always for a great amount as some deals are negotiated for a price difference of a few dollars. Although a variety exists, the primary emphasis is on antiques and old collectibles. Only dealers with all antiques and old collectibles are currently being added to the show, organizers state. For more information, call 414-5250820, email nlpromotionsllc@gmail. com, visit the Elkhorn Antique Flea Market Facebook page or the website at elkhornantiquefleamarket.com.

A FEW APPLE-PICKING POINTERS FROM THE EXPERTS Apple picking is a beloved autumn tradition. While many traditions had to be put on the back burner as the world dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, apple picking seems like one activity that can endure in a world dominated by social distancing. Apple picking season tends to begin in mid- to late-September and ends sometime in early October. That makes apple picking a perfect social distancing activity, as it’s both outdoors and at a time of year when the weather is generally pleasant no matter where you live. Individuals interested in apple picking this fall can take heed of these tips to ensure their trip is fun, safe and successful. Contact the farm in advance Apple picking is a wildly popular activity, so expect a crowd to be there on a typical autumn weekend. That can be tricky to navigate while social distancing, so call ahead to learn about new protocols and if the operating hours are the same. If the farm is open several days per week, ask which days are the least busy and schedule your trip when foot traffic figures
Choose firm apples without bruises According to Pickyourown.org, apples should be crisp and firm. Don’t worry about the color of the apple, as color is not an indicator of ripeness. Instead, Pickyourown.org advises people to ask the farmers which apples are ripe, which is determined by how long it’s been since the trees flowered.
Clean apples before eating them The Food and Drug Administration notes that produce can be contaminated even after it’s been picked and brought home. The FDA advises consumers to wash their hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after preparing fresh produce. Produce should be rinsed before it’s peeled so any lingering dirt and bacteria are not transferred from the knife onto the fruit or vegetable. If bruising has occurred, cut away the damaged or bruised areas before preparing or eating it.
Gently place picked apples into your basket Pickyourown.org recommends gently placing apples into your basket after picking them. Tossing them into the basket may cause bruising, which can lead to the apples spoiling prematurely. While it depends on the variety, many apples that are not bruised tend to last a long time, especially when stored in a cool place. So taking care of them when picking them can mean you get to enjoy apples for several weeks.
Local orchards to visit Spirit of Geneva Lakes magazine recommends the following three orchards to visit this fall. Visitors are advised to call ahead or check online for hours and visitor protocols. • Apple Barn Orchard and Winery, W6384 Sugar Creek Rd, Elkhorn; 262-7283266 • Brightonwoods Orchard, 1072 288th Ave, Burlington; 262-878-3000 • Hafs Road Orchard, W632 Hafs Rd, Genoa City, 262-279-3638
to be minimal. Also, not all orchards allow visitors to pick apples, but they’ll usually offer other activities to go along with the sale of apples.

A quick pick-me-up Company offers options to make tile look like new
Replacing an entire bathroom is costly, often in the $20,000 range depending on the quality one wants to put into the room. “That isn’t a cost many families can handle in today’s economy,” Grout Experts Kevin Ferrara, owner, said. So calling on Grout Experts might be the answer. “A shower that would cost $2,300 to replace can usually be re-caulked and grouted for around $500 making it look like new and pleasing the family and their budget.” For many the need to “spiff up” the grout often occurs when preparing for a big event such as a wedding, family reunion, or putting the home up for sale. Mold, mildew or chipped tiles are red flags for homebuyers when considering a property. Often the realtor will want the homeowner to replace floors, wall tiles, and even tubs and showers. Grout Experts can fix whatever is there and make it look brand new by regrouting and caulking. Quality service is one of the reasons that customers are so pleased with Grout Experts. Grout Experts take a personal interest in each customer. One of them will meet with the family and complete a written estimate of the cost of the job – no hidden fees. After the customer returns the signed contract the job is scheduled. “We are usually able to schedule the job within 7 to 10 days. Most jobs can be completed in one day, but occasionally very large jobs will require more time,”
But if it is not in good condition, it may need to be replaced. Grout Experts use environmentally friendly products that are safe for both family and pets. Choosing a new color for the grout can result in an entire new look for the bathroom or kitchen. Color sealing will give the grout a new look and protect it from discoloration. With about 40 different colors ranging from bright white through a variety of shades of off whites, shades of gray, terra cotta, and ending with their darkest color, midnight black, there is sure to be a color to complement the existing tile. Picking new colors Popular colors in bathroom fixtures like tubs, toilets and sinks often change. For many years a variety of colors from beige and almond to colorful greens and blues were the items of choice for the bathroom. Today more homeowners have returned to white fixtures. While toilets and sinks can be easily and relatively inexpensively changed, the bathtub is the problem. Grout Experts have the answer to change the ugly tub into a modern beautiful tub. THE RIGHT PROVIDERS MAKE FOR THE BEST RESULTS Fall is the time of the year when many people take a long look at their homes and properties to determine how to best prepare for winter and the holiday entertaining season. It’s no surprise then that many people turn their focus to home improvement. Whether that entails a new decor, flooring or furnace – or a full remodel – homeowners have to partner with trusted suppliers of products and services to finish their jobs with the best results their budget allows. In the Geneva Lakes Area, there are plenty of stores, contractors and services that can assist with tasks ranging from small to large. Here’s a look at several of Spirit magazine’s preferred home improvement providers:

Furniture pedigree REED’S HISTORY IS AS SOLID AS ITS FURNITURE by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Residents of the Elkhorn area are well familiar with Reed Furniture, which has been at its present location since 1957. But that was not the beginning of this business. It has remained in the same family since 1865 – that’s correct, 1865 – when Abraham Lincoln was president and the Civil War ended. Founded by John Reed in Palmyra in 1865, Reed moved his business to Elkhorn in 1871. His original store carried not only furniture but carpeting, blinds, and wallpaper along with a variety of in-home services. In the 1800s and early 1900s it was not unusual for the furniture stores and funeral homes to work together, and Albert J. Reed added the funeral home to this business but built it at a separate site. Over the years the business changed some of the services offered, including the selling of the funeral home by the current owners’ grandfather, but two things remained constant – furniture was their primary business and the business continued to be owned and run by the Reed family.
Brothers in charge
Today brothers Joe and Jim Reed are the owners of Reed Furniture and continue to provide high quality furniture and service to their customers. “We sell furniture that is built to last,” said Joe Reed. “(It’s) high quality furniture at reasonable prices. That is what most people are looking to purchase. “ This past year as more people have stayed home because of COVID, the Reed brothers have taken a look at their furnishings • CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

and it made them realize it is time to replace some things. “People in this area are looking at a mix of traditional and transitional furniture,” said Joe Reed. “Not many are interested in modern styles. In the last year, most customers are requesting furniture made here in America. One of the quality brands the store carries is King Hickory. The King Hickory sofas can be custom ordered in the customer’s choice of a variety of fabrics. According to Joe, a good quality sofa should last about 20 years if it is cared for. Less expensive sofas may only last about 10 years. If customers are not certain what they are looking for, a visit to the Reed showroom should clarify things. The large showroom is full of different styles of chairs, couches, and love seats, dining room sets, and bedroom furniture in a variety of colors and fabrics. It is especially good for those who have difficulty visualizing the final look. End tables and lamps along with other decorative accessories are in place to allow the customer to visualize a more finished arrangement. “The sofas can be ordered in fabrics and styles to meet your needs,” Joe Reed said. “Our staff will work with you to help you find the look you are trying to achieve.” One of their sales consultants, Jaimie, has been working at Reed for 18 years. During that time, she has developed a good sense of interior design and works well with those trying to decide what goes well together. The staff is accommodating and always willing to help the customer make choices. If not ready to make final choices, customers are welcome to wander the
store checking out the variety of furniture choices. This is a place when the staff works with your needs. They are happy to let customers look by themselves if that is what the customer wishes, but are also there to assist when needed.
Filling customer desires
There was a time when furniture all matched, but today people are looking for pieces that are not exactly the same yet still work well together. Chairs are often a different color from the sofa to bring another burst of color into the room. Recliners are popular for relaxing with a large number on display including a variety of colors. Blue remains a favorite choice for an accent color. Many are coming in looking to replace
their furniture because they are tired of the gray colors that have been so popular the last few years and need that touch of color. Once the large pieces for the room are in place it is time to consider what else needs to be there to make the room comfortable and attractive. End tables and coffee tables can be seen throughout the store in a variety of finishes and styles. “High-cost end tables are not as important as high-end sofas. The type of finish that is preferred may be ordered. Lift chairs are ultra comfortable especially for those with disabilities that make it difficult to get out of the chair or who need to change positions frequently. Reed Furniture has a limited number of these chairs in stock, other can be ordered. New bedroom furniture is also available from Reed’s in a variety of styles. Mattresses need to be replaced probably more often than most people choose to do so. It is only when they wake up each morning with a sore back that they begin to realize that it is time for a new mattress. “We only carry one brand of mattress because we feel it is the best for our customers,” Joe Reed said. “The mattress we carry is the Radiance line which is made in Wisconsin near Green Bay.” The mattress is available in three versions, firm, plush or luxe, depending on the support that one prefers. All the components used in the mattress are
from Wisconsin. The springs are made in Sheboygan and the foam is from Madison. Depending on which mattress is chosen, one can expect to have a warranty from 5 to 15 years. Looking for a new bedroom set? Consider one from Vaughn-Bassett. These American-made, solid wood bedroom sets are made from cherry, oak, maple, or birch. They are well constructed and will provide many years of service.
Delivery challenges
Because of the pandemic, delivery times for special-ordered furniture have increased. It’s a challenge all furniture stores face. Many of the upholstered pieces may take from 12 to 24 weeks. First there was a wood shortage and now it is a foam shortage. Recliners, if ordered today, will arrive in February. Reed has a good supply of furniture in its storeroom, but there is no guarantee that they have the exact item that the customer wants. “We have been ordering extra items all last year because of the extended shipping times but we are limited as to the amount our warehouse can hold. If we have one in stock that the customer wants of course we will sell him that one and he will not have to wait. Sometime we may have an item that is close to the one they wish to order but the customer will decide that they can be just as pleased with the one in stock because it saves the long delay,” added Joe Reed. Along with the increase in time for delivery, the cost of everything continues to rise. Prices for the raw materials used
to build the furniture continue to increase. Lumber has been in short supply and shipping costs too continue to rise. Items that are shipped from overseas have seen major increases in shipping prices. The cost a limited shipping container has increased 10 times since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Joe. “In spite of all these increases we continue to do our best to keep prices reasonable. We have a small but very efficient staff that helps to keep our overhead down,” he added.
Style assist
Often customers will bring in a photograph of the room to work with the staff to determine the appropriate size and style for the room. On some occasions they will come to the house but this is more unusual. A photo is often all that is needed. “We don’t do curtain and drapery design. We focus just on furniture – fine quality and great style,” added Joe Reed. “We deliver all the items to the home without additional charge in about a 60 mile radius from Elkhorn. We also service what we sell. We will handle dealing with the manufacturer if it is still under warranty.” With more than 150 years of service and experience standing behind them, you know they will still be there after the sale to ensure that any difficulties or problems will be solved expediently. Reed Furniture is at 920 N. Wisconsin, Elkhorn. Visit them in person or at their website shopreed.com, which has photos of many of the items in store. The store’s telephone number is 262-723-2686.

It was difficult not to notice as it has been replaced by a beautiful chandelier. The chandelier was the gift of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. It gives the room a more elegant appearance. Klein also pointed out the Yamaha grand piano, a gift from the Grand Geneva Resort.
