The month of September is a time when the tree leaves begin to turn from green to yellow and orange and apples begin to ripen. It is time for a trip out to your favorite apple orchard to enjoy the fruits of the season.

The Apple Barn, in Elkhorn, has been a favorite of customers for many years.

Six generations of the Jacobson family have made their home on this land and continue the family tradition of farming the land and caring for their fruit orchards.

“The original family members arrived in this area from Oslo, Norway, in 1846,” the Apple Barn’s Judy Jacobson said. “Along with other members of the Norwegian community who settled here, they helped build the local church – still standing just down the road – and built a cheese factory. While involved in these community activities, they also began the hard work of turning this land into a productive farm.”

Judy Jacobson and her husband, Steve, are the current generation of the family to successfully farm the land and operate the Apple Barn retail store.

They were successful and with each generation increased both the crops grown and the variety of apple trees in their orchards. The apple orchards

matured and produced top quality apples. They have continued to be a full-time farm, planting more than 400 acres of field corn, soybeans and other crops in addition to the variety of fruit trees in the orchards.

The apple season

“Around the weekend of Sept. 28, we begin the Apple Fest season, which continues on weekends through October 19 and 20 dependent on weather,” Jacobson said. “During this time in addition to the apple varieties available in the Apple Barn for purchase, customers may enjoy pick-your-own apples, on these weekends.”

A trip out into the apple orchards is always a fun activity for families to share this outdoor experience. Here children who live in the city learn that apples grow on trees and not in the local supermarket.

Each fall customers wait for their favorite varieties to ripen in anticipation of a fresh, tree-ripened apple.

“The first varieties available for sale are the Paula Reds, the Zestars, and the MacIntosh varieties, usually beginning to ripen in the middle of September,” Jacobson said. “In late September other varieties begin to ripen and we begin the pick-your-own season for those who enjoy this out of doors activity.”

Fall also calls for apple cider. Many enjoy cold apple cider while the weather is still warm and then a switch to the hot, spiced

apple cider when the weather cools down. The pressing of apples begins in the fall and continues through January.

To enjoy along with the fall ciders, visitors are encouraged to try the apple cider donuts made fresh at Apple Barn.

“They are made by us on a daily basis,” Jacobson said. “Ours are special because they are made with straight apple cider, not diluted cider as some recipes call for.”

Around 2004, the Jacobson’s introduced a new product that has become one of their very most popular.

“In the 1990s, my husband, Steve, began experimenting with wine making after he received a home wine-making kit from his mother as a gift,” Judy Jacobson said. “As he experimented with making wines, he turned from making grape wines to experimenting with other fruit wines. As he became more interested in the various types of wine that he produced, we considered making a few wines to sell on site at the Apple Barn.”

approval from the State of Wisconsin and began to produce fruit wines on site.

What began as a hobby, then moved on to a small addition to the business. It didn’t stop there as the Apple Barn is now producing 13 varieties of wine.

The wines are made from fruits, but not traditional grapes. Instead they use a variety of fresh fruits such as strawberries, apples, rhubarb, pears, and cranberries.

While most people assume that these fruit wines would all be sweet, they are not “Our wines range from dry to sweet,” Jacobson said. “Most of the wines are in the semi-sweet range. We do not add any enhancements or coloring to our wines, so the color and flavor comes from the fruit used Making the wine is a yearlong process, which begins when the fruit is ripe. The fruit needs to be cooked and fermented over the winter and then bottled.

“The wine that was begun last summer is just being bottled now,” Jacobson said.

“All our wines are created in small batches on site.”

New task for old barn

The Apple Barn retail store and Winery is a series of buildings that have been on the farm for many years and have been repurposed for the winery.

The wine is actually made in the farm’s old milking barn. Connected to the milking barn is the gift shop area, which was the old granary. Connected to the gift shop area is the wine-tasting room, which was repurposed from the original machine shop for the farm.

Today that building has a whole new look. A large tasting bar covers one side of the room with skylights and unique chandeliers hanging above it. The chandeliers have, instead of crystals, inverted wine glasses hanging in their place to light up the bar along with large skylights.

A few tables to enjoy your wine tasting are scattered throughout the SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

tasting room. Over several of the tables are the unique light fixtures that are part of the wine décor, which permeates this room. This chandelier is composed of wine bottles.

The tasting room is the place to begin if you haven’t tried any of the fruit wines produced at Apple Barn. They offer wine tasting on the weekends, but suggest people call before coming during the week for a wine tasting.

Large school groups frequently visit Apple Barn during the week so they have chosen not to offer wine tasting when school groups are present. If no school groups are scheduled to be at the Apple Barn, a wine tasting may possibly be arranged for that day.

People often say they don’t like wines other than grape wines because they are too sweet. Autumn gold is one of the apple wines that is very popular with many customers that may change their minds. It is a dry wine that can be enjoyed by those who do favor sweet wines.

The Spiced Apple Harvest wine is a favorite fall wine. It is also recommended for holidays. Fermented with natural spices, it offers a unique flavor. Many drink it warmed in cold weather.

the apples considered a No. 2 grade are used. The number 2 grade apples are just as tasty but are not as attractive to the customers because they are not big and shiny. However, they taste just as good and when juiced for the wine, no one remembers what they looked like before they were juiced. They do make a very tasty wine.”

In addition to apples, the farm also grows pears but you will never see any for sale in the store.

“We don’t have a large number of pear trees so we use the pears they produce to make our pear wine,” Jacobson said. “The pear wine has won the Grand Champion Award at the County Fair. It is something special.”

The Special German Rhubarb wine is another of the out-of-the-ordinary wines that should be tasted. It is prepared by fermenting the rhubarb juice with ginger root and cloves. It, too, is often enjoyed as a special treat during the holidays.

LOCAL WINERIES OFFER AWARD-WINNING SELECTIONS

September evenings often bring that first reminder of autumn’s chill. And many times it’s accompanied by warm thoughts of hearty breads, savory cheeses and variety of well-chosen wines to wash it down with…perhaps in front of a fireplace with a special someone.

Wine and autumn go together like, well, crisp cool nights and warm, sunny days.

When it comes to wine, a multitude of options exist in the Lake Geneva area, or within a short drive, for the wine connoisseur.

In addition to the wide variety of fruit wines found at the Apple Barn (see separate story), you can tour the vineyard and production facilities at Staller Estates Winery or sample perry – a hard cider made from pears – which is available at ÆppelTreow Winery and Distillery outside Burlington.

Here’s a closer look at those latter two wineries:

STALLER ESTATE WINERY

Wendy Staller, co-owner of Staller Estate Winery, jokes that her job affords her the opportunity to drink at work.

She set out to be a pharmacist when she went into the sciences – she double-majored in biology and chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater – but her career choice evolved. The dynamic nature of grapes keeps Staller interested in wine.

“It’s always going to be different,” Staller said. “The wine is always going to change. You’re never going to get the same growing season, there’s always going to be a variety in how your wines are going to taste.”

Staller said she gets grapes from a number of locations, including on-site, and struggles against the upper Midwest’s short growing season. Vintners get a growing season of about 12 weeks

for grapes in this climate.

Staller produces more than a dozen varieties of wine and port using those grapes, and relishes every step.

“I enjoy everything,” Staller said. “It doesn’t matter whether we are picking grapes, bottling wines – I enjoy every aspect of it.”

ÆPPELTREOW WINERY AND DISTILLERY

“ÆppelTreow” is Old English, and is a play on words for “true to the apple” or “apple truth,” according to owner Charles McGonegal. The name is pronounced “Apple true.” ÆppelTreow is Wisconsin’s only winery and distillery. It is well known for producing perry, which is pear cider produced in the English tradition.

“I do very clean fermentations, and I have learned how to manage the pears,” McGonegal said. “We’re one of the few orchards in the country that grow old English perry pears.”

The pears are specifically to be used for producing perry, and offer properties and flavors that can’t be faked by using other pears. McGonegal said he imagined ÆppelTreow as a fruit winery, but the facility produces cider, perry and spirits.

“I think that Wisconsin can grow a better apple than it can a better grape,” McGonegal said. “I admire the folks growing their own grapes, but I find through personal experience they make very good brandy.” ÆppelTreow is at 1072 288th Ave., Burlington, and is a 25-minute drive from downtown Lake Geneva. The historical churches of Lake Geneva

When the early European immigrants made their way from Europe to the Midwest in the 1800s, they arrived in a land that had promise for the future but would require much work to turn it into the open farmland they desired.

Settling in the area that we now know as Lake Geneva, they brought with them their farming skills, strong work ethic, and hopes and dreams for a better life.

These early settlers staked claims on land in the region and began the arduous task of turning that wild land into a home and farm. Using materials found in nature, they felled the

plentiful trees and collected rocks to build homes and barns. They tilled the soil, planting foods that would help to sustain their families and livestock through the cold winters of this land that would become the State of Wisconsin.

They also brought with them their strong religious beliefs. Providing a church community was important and many of the churches that are still seen today in the Lake Geneva area had their roots back in the 1800s when these early settlers gathered to thank God for their blessings.

Most of the early parishes began without a church building or a minister or priest of their own. They gathered in homes in the community and were sometimes joined by a traveling clergyman who came to pray with them and to preach.

These early clergymen often had a large territory to cover as they visited small communities. In many cases, they were not able to arrive at each community every Sunday. For some it was on a monthly basis that they arrived and not necessarily on Sunday their traditional day of worship.

Building a church was a priority for these residents as they worked together to build the early churches, again made of wood, which was

The origins of this Church community go all the way back to 1842. According to a plaque presented by the Lake Geneva Historic Preservation Commission to commemorate the 175 years as a parish in the community, “the parish was founded in 1842 as St. Martin’s Parish by the Reverend Martin Kundig of Milwaukee.”

By 1844 a site for the church had been selected. That site was along what is now Highway 50 on the east side of town, a site that continues to be the home of the parish. According to the church’s history a rectory was

plentiful in the area. Unfortunately these early buildings did not last, succumbing to rot or fire.

As the community of Lake Geneva grew, so too did the church communities and the original Churches were replaced by more elegant stone or brick buildings and moved to the more central location of town.

Today walking through downtown Lake Geneva, many of these beautiful churches still are part of the beauty and history of the community. Here is a short history of three of these early church communities:

constructed as the first building and Mass was held on the second floor.

First used by clergy visiting the parish or just passing through, it became the home of Fr. Patrick McKernan, the first resident priest who served the community as pastor of the parish from 1847 to 1849.

1852 was an important year for the church as two important changes were made in the parish. The first was the construction of a frame building which would serve as a church for almost 50 years and then would continue to be used as a parish hall and for storage until 1927 when the building was destroyed by a storm.

The other change was the changing of the parish name from St. Martin’s to St. Francis de Sales. The name change was to honor the Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland. St. Francis de Sales is known as the patron saint of writers, journalists, the Catholic press and the hearing impaired.

According to Helen Brandt, church member and curator of the Geneva Lake Museum, among the early members of the church were the Irish settlers who lived in the area that became known as Irish Woods on the west side of town.

“It was a distance of at least three miles through town,” Helen said. “This was a time before automobiles and paved roads, making travel difficult but that did not deter the church members from attending their weekly Mass.”

Built in 1892 at a cost of about $18,000, the current church, which is seen when entering Lake Geneva from the east on Highway 50, is an impressive neo-classic style brick building, designed and built by Lake Geneva architect William Brady.

The interior of the church is as impressive as the exterior. Large stained glass windows line the sides of the church, many of them donated by members of the congregation.

have been added or restored during the renovations in the 1950s and again during the 2017 renovation by local stained glass artist, Ed Gilbertson.

The original pipe organ was a gift from Lake Geneva summer resident Patrick J. Healy of Lyon and Healy, Music of Chicago.

Donated in 1892 it served the congregation through many generations, until 2017 when it was replaced by a state of the art organ that was custom made and installed.

The sanctuary of the church maintains its Neo- Gothic architecture style with its high ceiling and extensive use of wooden embellishments and details. The black marble, which was first installed around the altar in 1959, has been repurposed for use in the immersion Baptismal font in 2017. The font is at the entrance to the church.

The parish school was opened in 1952 SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

with a student body of 80 children. Today the school has an enrollment of more than 170 students.

The parish is an active community, under the direction of Fr. Mark Danczyk, that continues to serve the spiritual needs of the local Catholic community.

First Lutheran School and Church

Around the year 1880 a small group of German Lutherans had settled in Lake Geneva. They did not have a church or a pastor but rather met in each of their homes to pray. About that time the Rev. C.F. Goldammer was serving a congregation in Slades Corners just east of Lake Geneva.

He generously worked with them to form a congregation in Lake Geneva that would serve the German Lutherans in the community.

At first they continued to meet in homes with Goldammer holding services in German every other Sunday afternoon.

For three years this community continued to meet and grow until they were too large to meet in homes. They rented a small church on the corner of Walworth and Sage Streets until 1883. When the church was no longer available for them to rent they purchased two lots on Walworth Street at a cost of $270, where they built a small one-room church, which was dedicated by Goldammer on May 4, 1884.

It was not until Jan. 4, 1885, that the first meeting of this church community was held.

The constitution and by-laws were signed by 21 members and adopted. The church was to be named the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church but somehow when the articles of incorporation were drawn, he word German was omitted. Thus it became The First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Five years later, due to growth of the congregation, a new church was built that would seat 250 people. It was dedicated on Jan. 1, 1892. The original church would become the Sunday school building. In that same year, the congregation applied for membership in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and was accepted.

In May 1896 a bell was purchased from a Milwaukee firm to be placed in the bell tower.

Prior to that time there was no bell in the tower to call the members to worship

Realizing it was time to separate from Slades Corners, a parsonage was constructed to house the new pastor that they would require.

The cost for the parsonage was $1,455.

Services were held in German until 1905 when, because parish’s growth, English speaking members were brought in. Occasional English services were held until 1926 when English became the primary language of most of the congregation.

English services were then held every Sunday at 10 a.m. German services were reduced to every other Sunday at 11 a.m.

German services were completely deleted in 1942. The Rev. Henry Diehl was the longest serving pastor in the First Lutheran Church. He first came to the church as a guest pastor in 1917 and when the current pastor resigned in 1919 he was unanimously chosen to become the pastor. He served the congregation from 1919 until his death in 1958. During Diehl’s tenure many changes occurred. He was known for the amount of time he spent visiting community members at home and at Lakeland Hospital. He also served on the public school board. Something not usually done by members of the clergy.

Plans to build a new church were made in 1957 when land across from Oak Hill Cemetery was purchased. The building was delayed with the death of Pastor Diehl in 1958. It was not until 1961 that ground was broken. The new church would be dedicated on Feb. 24, 1963.

The new church was an impressive building built using fieldstone in a bold architectural design, the work of architect Charles Edward Stade of Park

Ridge, Illinois. He described his very modern design “as attempting to relate earth and space creatively and symbolically. The use of fieldstone in low walls, tie the building to the earth. The flowing lines of the roof, jutting out in four directions create a dynamic outline.”

From a point in the center rises a 37 foot laminated aluminum spire, topped with an 8-foot bronze cross. The six bells suspended from the eaves above the main entrance are rung prior to and after services. The bells are cast bronze and weigh from 110 to 650 pounds. Inside the church continues a look of spaciousness and simplicity. The fieldstone walls which were cut from quarries throughout Wisconsin, in a variety of shapes and colors line the walls. The unique textures add to the look of the church.

Unique to this church was the organist.

Jeannette West began playing the organ in church at the age of 15 years and continued to serve as the organist for 75 years.

In 1977 the church added a Christian day school to their parish. It began with 27 students that first year. The school continues although according to Steven Davis, Office Administrator, the registration is still about 20 students.

According to Linda West, lifetime resident of Lake Geneva and member of the church, “Many of the members of the church are now related through marriage Many members met their spouses through church activities. So we are a close congregation” The current pastor, the Rev. Karl Schultz welcomes visitors to the church.

Church of the Holy Communion

The Holy Communion Episcopal Church Parish was another of the early Christian churches to make their home in the Lake Geneva area. Established in Bloomfield Township in 1844, it is considered to be one of the oldest Episcopal parishes in Wisconsin.

The first Episcopal service was on March 31, 1844, when Bishop Jackson Kemper arrived on horseback from Milwaukee to conduct services for a small group of Episcopalians in the area.

Seminarians from Delafield would later arrive and conduct services until the arrival of Fr. John McNamara who relocated from New York. He gave the church the name Church of the Holy Communion in honor of his parish in New York.

The first church building was built in Bloomfield Township, a wooden structure next to the cemetery.

“That building either fell down or incurred a fire. It was located next to the cemetery,” said Fr. Kevin Huddleston, current pastor of Holy Communion Episcopal Church.

The church moved to Lake Geneva in 1857 where they first had services in the Presbyterian Church. They purchased land to build a church on Broad Street, in downtown The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion was built of local granite boulders in Lake Geneva. Donations to build the church 1888, 36 years after the founding of the parish. The boulders were split to give the effect of were first received in 1856 when a Mrs. Dodge of Chicago donated $1,000 toward the changing colors and design and laid in a diffuse pattern.

In spite of this large donation, it would take until 1880 to see the church completed, because of the huge cost of $12,000 anticipated by architectural firm Treat and Volts of Chicago. That would be the cost of the building without furnishings. They began to build the church in October 1880, after “The money was in the bank for the full expense,” according to church history.

The church was designed to be built from granite boulders collected in the area. The rocks were split and laid irregularly on the church’s outer surface to afford a clean front with the effect of changing colors and design. The windows and coping of the steep roof are bordered with limestone and the 43-foot-high interior is buttressed with oak beams. The beauty of the design is still appreciated by church members and visitors today.

The new building was consecrated on June 7, 1882, by Bishop Edward Welles with one of the largest crowds ever assembled in Lake Geneva. A special train was necessary to carry people from Chicago and every road was crowded with vehicles from the country and surrounding towns,” according to the church’s history book. The temporary structure, which had been used for services until that time was used as a Guild Hall until it was razed in August 1964.

The interior of the church was designed using extensive woodwork. From the structural timbers to the interior sanctuary furniture, the altar, and pews, everything was constructed of native oak. While the church has undergone renovations over the years with new finishes on the wood, the original oak remains.

Beautiful stained glass windows line the sanctuary and side walls of the church. Many of them were given by members of the church as memorials. Some were designed by the architect, and created in Munich, Germany.

Mary Delafield Sturges was well known in the Lake Geneva area for her philanthropy and as a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, she did not forget her church. Shortly after the building of the church commenced, she donated money to allow the addition of a sacristy and choir room. In 1893 she gifted the church with a Hook and Hastings Tracker Action Pipe Organ, which is still in use in the church today. It is one of the few remaining in the Midwest.

One of the more recent acquisitions was the donation of handcarved Stations of the Cross by an anonymous donor in 1957. The stations were carved in Oberammergau, Germany, which has a long tradition of woodcarving.

The Church of the Holy Communion continues to grow under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Kevin Huddleston.

The organ remains one of the few functioning Hook and Hastings tracker organs in the Midwest.

WINTERIZING 101 HOW TO PREPARE YOUR YARD FOR WINTER

Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn.

Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner.

But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE

Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come.

Community Supported Agriculture, in which customers essentially purchase a share of a farm while saving money on produce, has been around for years. The CSA customers pick up a box of prepaid, seasonal produce each week during the growing season.

But one area produce farm has a slightly different way of doing things, which they credit for the notable increase in their CSA business.

“The boxes aren’t preloaded. That’s the feedback we got so we decided to try it.

It’s probably tripled our CSA business,” according to Jackie Koster, of Geneva Lakes Produce Farm.

Geneva Lakes is open from May to October and grows a variety of vegetables, some fruit and also offers other locally made or grown specialty items.

“Most of our business is done through local farmers markets and our home-based farm stand. We also provide for a number of local grocery stores, restaurants and other farmers,” the website states.

“It’s our goal to provide fresh, healthy, local food to as many people as we can, while sustaining our farm and keeping our community strong,” it states.

A CSA is a program that helps to bridge the gap between consumers and their local agriculture. This program gives an opportunity to consumers who care about what they eat – and want to support local agriculture – the opportunity to do both and save money.

of the high quality, seasonal produce for the duration of the membership.

With Geneva Lakes Produce CSA, the objective is to make more people part of their farm. While a traditional CSA provides a prefilled box, Geneva Lakes allows customers to have a say in what they get.

“We allow members to fill their own box by choosing from our full selection of fresh, high quality, homegrown produce. Doing it this way allows members to get the produce they want, while not being required to take something they might not enjoy,” the website states.

Another benefit to filling their own box is that it gives CSA members the opportunity to fill their box with produce to be jarred, canned or frozen in high quantity when it is in season.

With the full share, if a CSA member wishes to split it with a friend – or pick up twice in one week – Geneva Lakes offers an option to add an extra box for an additional cost. This would allow for picking up a half share box twice in the same week.

The season takes place over a 20-week period that this year began June 12 and goes until the last week of October. There is also an extended season option, which allows customers seven extra weeks/fill ups whenever they choose.

“The extra weeks/fill ups can be used for plants and early produce in the spring, starting in early May. It can be used for extra produce in the summer, if you ever would like to double up in the same week (commonly used by members doing canning, jarring or freezing), or they can be used for produce all of the way through November or December,” the website states.

Some of the farm’s pickup locations run late into fall and winter, so members can extend their CSA season by attending those markets.

Membership details

Becoming a member of the Geneva Lakes Produce CSA means that the money paid into the membership will be used by the farm to put crops into the field and maintain them until the point of ripeness, which is when they will bring them to customers through pickup locations.

“For this reason, the CSA payment is most valuable to us early in the season, so the price is lowest at that time. As the season progresses and our costs pass, the cost of the CSA also rises. So becoming a member early pays off,” the website states.

Although, regardless of when the membership is purchased, it is still a considerable savings compared to normal retail prices, it adds.

The prices for this year were as follows: • Half produce share ($25 worth of produce each week), if purchased by April 30, was $490 for the standard 20-week option or $640 for the extended, 27-week offering; • Full produce share ($50 worth of produce each week), if purchased by April 30, was $770 for the standard 20-week option or $1,010 for the extended, 27-week offering.

Geneva Lakes Produce’s location in Spring Prairie is the original farm stand and first permanent retail sales location for the farm.

Scott Koster grew up in Kankakee, Ill., farming with his grandfather, father and other local farmers, working in the fields, as well as maintaining some local farm stands. Moving into his business of selling seed, his path led him to Burlington, where he started Geneva Lakes Produce in the 1980s with a handful of roadside self-serve produce stands.

In the mid 1990s, he opened his first permanent farm stand in Spring Prairie. The farm, currently being run by Scott and his sons Jordan and Corban, still relies greatly on the Spring Prairie farm stand and serves as the home base for local CSA members, according to the website.

The latest statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism reveals that all five counties in the Southern Lakes area have seen economic increases related to tourism.

Stephanie Klett, president and CEO of Visit Lake Genva, who served as the Wisconsin Secretary of Tourism for eight years, said tourism helps business in a lot of ways including some ways people don’t often consider.

“If they have a great time when they visit, they’ll come back. And if they come back, it has an even bigger impact because they may buy a second home here, live here, get a job here,” Klett said.

being busy, she said the return on investment is sometimes overlooked.

“Right now in Wisconsin, every household would have to pay $680 a year to maintain the current level of services that tourism accounts for. That’s a big amount,” she said.

Klett said it’s a known fact that people who take vacations function at a higher level.

“They come here, have fun, create lasting memories, learn something new – whether they want to or not – and give themselves a break,” she said.

Klett said in addition to the big attractions in the area, small businesses also benefit from tourism traffic, in part thanks to support from visitor centers, chambers and so on.

Like many restaurants, Mama T’s Italian Eatery in Elkhorn started with a leap of faith.

“When we got together – we’ve been married a year – we tossed around the idea and decided with his cooking and restaurant background, and my marketing experience, we have a good shot,” Laura Taylor said.

She was referring to what she and her husband, Brian, hope will be a successful restaurant venture.

The couple lives in Burlington, but Brian is from the Elkhorn area and both of them work in Elkhorn, in addition to running their new restaurant.

Brian said he’s always loved to cook.

“My grandfather was Italian and a very good cook. It was always a dream of mine to open a restaurant,” he said, adding that he worked at several restaurants in the area, including Next Door Pub and La Gustosa’s, in Lake Geneva, doing everything from dishwashing to helping in the kitchen.

Brian was the original owner of Vesuvio’s in Delavan, which was successful and he ultimately sold five years later. He ran Portabella Grille in Elkhorn, which is now Calabria, for a couple of years. He also had a place in Whitewater, which he said was challenging and short lived.

“At that time no one wanted to pay more than $5 for a pizza so it didn’t work. It would probably be more successful now as things have changed there,” he said.

for making the restaurant a success are somewhat simple.

“The vision was to be family-friendly but also have that romantic feel and yet be affordable,” Laura said.

“We aimed to offer appetizers, sandwiches and entrees between $7 and $15 so it really is affordable,” Brian added.

Mama T’s is currently open for dinner but the Taylors hope to expand those hours soon.

“We wanted to get the basics ironed out but hope to expand with a goal of being open for lunch in September. We’re planning a limited lunch menu so people can get in and out and back to work,” Laura said.

They said people who haven’t been to the restaurant at 781 E. Geneva St., Elkhorn, since it became Mama T’s are surprised by the many changes.

“We did a lot of work: new flooring, we painted, added partitions and chair rails and window blinds. We love how it turned out,” Laura said.

Having only been open a few weeks, they said the response – including several return customers – has been very positive.

“Word-of-mouth has been wonderful with many people who come in saying they heard about it from so-and-so. Facebook has been huge, too,” Laura said.

Among the reviews on the restaurant’s Facebook page, several people commented on the good food, variety of options and affordable prices, and just as importantly, how they were treated by staff.

“I’m in marketing so I talk to people,” Laura said. “I love meeting people and talking to people – that’s where I excel. But I also talked to staff about making eye contact, finding out how they heard about us, and I also ask how they liked it because we

really do want them back.”

Mama T’s, in addition to the owners, has four waitresses and a helper in the kitchen. But they’ll be looking for more help once the college students go back to school.

“I love the staff we have. It’s seriously the best crew – friendly and they have great personalities. We lucked out,” Laura said.

She also said her and Brian’s families have been very supportive and have stepped in and helped as needed.

The menu includes appetizers, fresh mixed salads, pizza, sandwiches, pasta bowls and Italian specialties. It’s easy to spot Laura’s favorites on the menu.

“The ones named Mama T’s – beef supreme sandwich, meat lasagna and the fantastic wings, which is an appetizer – those are my favorites,” she said. “And I’m a picky eater.”

The menu also features burgers and chicken strips as well as a Friday night fish fry with the fixings.

Among the dessert entrees is homemade cannoli and tiramisu and as soon as the license is approved, the restaurant will serve wine, beer and sangria.

Laura said she and her husband compliment each other well and while opening the restaurant is a risk, she said they both believe it’ll be a success.

“He’s an amazing cook and I love talking so it works well,” she said.

“Taking a risk like this – with a little family place – we know that personal touch can’t be replaced. We’ll treat people right.”

Mama T’s Italian Eatery is currently open Monday through Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Geneva Lake’s shore path offers a variety of scenery Wisconsin features thousands of lakes, but none prettier than Geneva. One of the unique features about the lake is the 26mile shore path that is open to the public.

This might not be so surprising if the path didn’t cut through the front yards of historic estates with well kept lawns and gardens and perfect views of Geneva’s clear blue waters with its traffic of sailboats, excursion boats and antique wooden craft.

The shore line of Geneva Lake is about 20-plus miles, but the path reaches nearly 26 miles, much of it weaving in and out of the woods along the shoreline.

Lake Geneva’s Library Park is home to a plaque that reads “The 26-mile lakeside trail along the shore of Geneva Lake was used by several Indian cultures from 2500 BC to 1836 AD.” [when land-hungry European immigrants swindled them out of their property and shipped them off to Kansas].

“Chief Big Foot’s Potawatomi tribe walked the trail between their villages at what is now Fontana, Williams Bay and the one at Lake Geneva, which was located in this park. Later the trail became the workmen’s path from Lake Geneva to summer estates of wealthy Chicago families.

“After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, many Chicago natives made their way up to the Geneva Lake area to build summer estates that were just as big and elegant as their Chicago homes. Many of these ‘summer cottages’ can still be found along the shore path.

“The path has been preserved by early settlers who stipulated that the 20 feet abutting the shoreline be preserved as public domain. Property owners were responsible then, and still are today, to maintain the path through each of their estates. Each property owner puts his own spin on his part of the shore path; some have placed benches to rest, some have artwork and some even have water stations.

Just as the property owners maintain their property for the convenience of pathwalkers, they expect the visitors to respect their homes in return. They politely ask for visitors not to venture onto their lawns, gardens, piers or boathouses. Dogs are welcome on the path as long as they are leashed and picked up after. Bikes are not allowed, because they leave ruts on the unpaved portions of the path when it is wet.

Strollers are not recommended on the path, as some of the terrain can be treacherous.

The ideal way to enjoy a hike along the shore path is by wearing sturdy shoes with a good tread to prevent slipping. The terrain varies from cement, bricks, wood, stepping stones, and gravel, some of which are hilly or twist in and out of wooded areas. There

are areas where it becomes very narrow or comes very close to the shoreline so visitors are warned to walk with care.

It is a big undertaking to walk the path in one try. It would take 8 to 10 hours for someone who is in average physical shape to make the 26 mile journey around Geneva Lake. Residents familiar with the path recommend walking it in sections; there are a few public access points, Lake Geneva Public Library, Fontana, Williams Bay and Big Foot Beach State Park. Cutting through private property to access the path is not allowed.

Experienced walkers find it is best to park a car at the end of one section and drive a car to where they would like to start so that they can drive back.

The easiest place to walk is starting at the Lake Geneva Library and heading out in either direction for about a mile. This piece is great for those who are traveling with SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

young children or have mobility concerns, as it is paved. When you are ready to take on the whole path frequent walkers recommend starting on the south side of the path since it is a little more challenging than the north side.

No matter how many times you walk the Geneva Lake Shore Path, you are sure to discover something new each time, as the scenes change with the seasons from the bloom of spring to the brilliant colors of fall.

Although many of the historic mansions have fallen prey to the wrecking ball, there are still enough to fascinate anyone interested in the architecture of days gone by. Many of the 19th- and early-twentiethcentury mansions have been replaced by new construction that is, in many ways, as impressive as the ones they replaced.

bolsters Alpine Valley’s 2019 lineup

Event aims to help state’s struggling dairy farms

Farm Aid’s annual music and food festival will return to Wisconsin for the second time in its history on Saturday, Sept.

21, at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy.

Farm Aid, an organization launched in 1985, looks to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America through fundraising for programs supporting food from family farms.

Headlined by Farm Aid founder and board member Willie Nelson, the 2019 event will feature other board members,

like John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds as well as several other prolific performers.

Those performers include Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, Margo Price, Jamey Johnson, Tanya Tucker, Brothers Osborne, Lukas Nelson and Promise of Real, Yola, Luke Combs and Particle Kid. The annual music and food festival, which made its first, and only Wisconsin appearance in 2010 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, decided on Alpine Valley in response to the growing agricultural crisis in Wisconsin. Statewide, the dairy industry generates $43.4 billion annually, which fuels the economy at a rate of more than $80,000 per minute.

Although the dairy industry boosts

the state’s economy, dairy farmers have struggled, with Wisconsin losing nearly 700 dairy farms last year.

Nelson said Farm Aid’s return to Wisconsin is imperative in a press release.

“With devastating weather, low prices and harmful farm and trade policies, America’s family farmers are facing immense challenges to hold on to their farms. It’s not right … family farmers are essential for all of us,” Nelson said.

“By bringing our festival to the heart of the struggle, we will stand side by side with farmers. At Farm Aid 2019, we’ll highlight solutions and show our support for family farmers’ contributions to our health, economy and environment.”

risk for depression and suicide compared to the general population.

According to a Farm Aid news release, the organization saw a 109 percent increase in hotline calls from concerned farmers in 2018.

Economic hardships Meanwhile, according to Farm Aid, the 2019 event carries a similar economic goal to the first event held in 1985.

Median farm income is expected to be a negative $1,449 in 2019, and while net farm income in 2019 is projected to be 8 percent higher than prior year levels, it will remain among the bottom 25 percent of all time.

The Farm Aid event, however, looks to offer some relief for some family farmers.

Since its inception, Farm Aid has raised $57 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, including expanding its reach and taking action to change the dominant system of industrial agricultural and promote food from family farms.

Annually, proceeds from the annual Farm Aid concert are granted to nonprofit organizations working to strengthen family farm agriculture and improve the nation’s food system.

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, of East Troy, has seen some benefits from Farm Aid grants.

Using funds secured through Farm Aid grants, Michael Field Agricultural Institute has provided grant-advising services for farmers looking to apply for federal, state and private funding sources, the nonprofit organization said in a news release.

“The institute’s research and education programs are focused

on sustainable agriculture – which can help reduce global climate change, increase soil health and quality, and produce healthy food for a growing population,” its news release states.

Unique experience Farm Aid officials said the annual event offers an experience unlike any other, with many other activities scheduled, including exhibits celebrating agriculture.

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute agreed.

“Farm Aid is an all-day festival that brings together incredible music, good food and hands-on activities to get folks in touch with the roots of our food,” the organization said in a news release.

In addition to HOMEGROWN concessions, which showcases family farm-sourced ingredients, there will be a HOMEGROWN Youthmarket operated by youth involved in farming and farmers markets.

Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Village features hands-on activities about soil, water, energy, food and farming.

“Festivalgoers can hear farmers and artists discuss pressing issues and share inspiring stories on the FarmYard Stage, as well as attend demonstrations to learn agrarian skills and celebrate the culture of agriculture in the HOMEGROWN Skills tent,” Farm Aid states.
