Quality, creativity, variety is key for new Savoy at French Country Inn by Dennis West CORRESPONDENT
The French Country Inn is steeped in history, not the least of which is a tradition of fine dining. Portions of the main house including the solid oak, hand-carved staircase and inlaid parquet floors, were built in Denmark in the 1880s and then transported by ship to Chicago as the Danish pavilion for the 1893 Columbian Exposition, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. After the fair the buildings were sold and transported by rail to the south shore of Lake Como, just minutes from Geneva Lake and the City of Lake Geneva. Prior to its transformation to a hotel, the Lake Como property was used as an ice storage house and then a private hunting club. During the early 1900s, the property became hunting and fishing resort owned by C.N. Smith. In 1921 the Notter family sold the property to Christian Hermansen a native of Denmark who, as a skilled carpenter, is reported to have worked on the construction of the pavilion prior to its appearance at the 1893 World’s Fair. Hermansen’s acquisition of the property began a legendary period of ownership and management that Upper photo: The French Country Inn sits on the south shore of Lake Como and offers spectacular views of the lake with its outdoor dining. spanned 50 years and three generations of the family. Christian, as Hermansen was known, along with his three sons Inar, Hobart and Harry, also owned the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Lake Geneva Hotel, which they purchased in the 1930s.
NOTORIOUS HISTORY
Although the French Country Inn remained a family friendly lake resort, it was also a favorite getaway for such well-known gangsters as George “Bugs” Moran and Baby Face Nelson, as well as members of the John Dillinger gang. The inn’s secluded location and the owner’s discreet hospitality made it a perfect place to escape the summer “heat,” including that brought to bear by federal agents. The most interesting of the Hermansen brothers was Hobart. He was a friend of gangsters Baby Face Nelson, Dillinger gang members Tommy Carroll and John Paul Chase. Hobart’s cohort Jimmy Murray, the bootlegger who delivered liquor to the famed Dillinger hangout “Little Bohemia” also supplied the Lake Como Hotel with beer during prohibition from his New Glarus Brewery. All of these characters vacationed, or more likely “holed up,” at the hotel in the 1920s and 30s. Hobart himself was reputed to be the “Slot Machine King of Walworth County.” He ran a speakeasy and gambling den called “The Sewer” in the basement of what was then known as the Lake Como Hotel. But Hobart’s closest relationship was with Mr. and Mrs. George Moran who visited the Hermansen property many times, even after

the Morans divorced following the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and Hobart married Bugs’ ex-wife, Lucille, in 1932.

Hobart Hermansen along with his brothers and nephew Allen managed the Lake Como Hotel until 1971 when it was sold to Fay and Gene Leichtey who changed the name to The Red Chimney Inn. The Leichtey’s ran the property for several years, and then sold it to the Sal Argento Family who changed the name to the Lake Como Hotel Inn. When the Navilio family bought the property, they changed the name to the French Country Inn. The restaurant, which was located in the oldest part of the building, was leased by several parties over the years, most famously by Jim Kirschlager, whose Kirsch’s Restaurant became famous for fine dining. After Kirschlager closed the restaurant, and another one of the same name in Williams Bay, it passed through several hands and featured different kinds of cuisine, none of which lived up to the title of “fine dining.” During the past year, a new owner has extensively remodeled the inn. And, since January, a new lessee has remodeled the restaurant and revived the tradition of fine dining. Co-owner John Strong has used his ingenuity, and apparently a great deal of money, to refresh what is now known

as Savoy at the French County Inn. He, Executive Chef Cristian Hernandez and Executive Pastry Chef Jenny Strong, have been working non-stop for months to achieve their goals. In addition to the uniqueness of the building, its lakeshore location with two tree-shaded outdoor patios make it truly special. “We wanted it to resemble a bistro in the rural French countryside,” Strong said. The bar has retained its copper top and artfully engraved brass fittings, but has otherwise been brightened with coats of white paint and extensive banquettes that offer a comfortable seating choice. The back bar has been removed and the wall fitted with an 18-foot window that overlooks the lake and folds back on itself to provide drink and bar food service to the patio. The main part of the restaurant has, likewise, been brightened and new floors of stone and reclaimed maple wood have been installed. Heritage Beam and Board of Elkhorn did the redesign.

Both chefs are proud of their large garden, which is located just to the east of the restaurant. Surrounded by an 8-foot-high fence, it provides fresh produce and herbs that inspire them to create new dishes and garnishes for them, including edible flowers. “If we grow our own food and tend it, we will take better care of our (beautiful, new) kitchen,” Hernandez said. “It reminds us to do our best.” Among the features that have received high marks are the steaks, Chicken Chicharron, salmon, and Savoy Old Fashioned Duck, which is an orangemarinated duck breast cherry whiskey gastrique. Entrees that have recently been added are Rack of Lamb, Scallops and Citrus Braised Pork Belly. Diners speak fondly of the desserts, including Chamomile Carrot Cake, Mexican Chocolate Cream Puff, as well as ice creams and sorbets that are all made in house. “A lot of people stop here just for dessert on their way home from an evening out,” Hernandez said. In addition to the desserts, Jenny Strong has become known for her many different bread recipes. Unlike breadbaskets at most restaurants, the one at Savoy isn’t complimentary, but a menu item. It consists of four home-baked pastry items including one sweet, like banana chocolate chip, and three others such as sourdough, cottage cheese dill or focaccia. Strong said that, unlike most restaurants, she doesn’t use packaged, frozen bread. She makes everything from scratch. “I develop different bread baskets, using a variety of herbs,” she said. “We use them to show off various kinds of olive oil.” In September, an empty shop space just inside the front door of the restaurant was slated to become home to a patisserie, or French-style bakery, that will also offer coffee and ice cream. Asked what they plan to be best known for, Hernandez and Strong said they don’t plan to feature one item, such as ribs or steaks. “When people think of the Savoy, we don’t want them to think of one particular entrée, but a place to discover new and interesting things,” Hernandez

tourism. The site chosen to build this structure was at the Public Landing where a basic wooden structure known as the Northport Ballroom was located and boats docked on the shore. The beach nearby included a large wooden waterslide, which delighted both children and adults. Before work could begin, the beach had to be moved and the ballroom torn down. The beach was moved to the west and the wooden slide was demolished along with the Northport Ballroom to make way for the new structure. Construction began in April as the first of 280 piles were driven into the bedrock through a manmade peninsula to support the structure. With a work schedule of two six-hour shifts each day, the building continued to progress quickly. Builders reported using 75,000 bricks in the construction of the Riviera. An additional 27 cement pillars were installed to support the cement floor on the second level, along with an additional 28 cement pillars that were added to help support the weight of the roof. As work progressed the building was
A busy ballroom
Officially the Riviera was dedicated on May 22, 1933, and included a performance by Wayne King and his orchestra. That
evening was only the beginning of many more musical acts and visitors that would make their way to the Riviera to enjoy the music and dancing on the beautiful hardwood dance floor. From the 1930s through the 1950s, music and the happy voices of those attending could be heard along the shore of Geneva Lake. The Riviera hosted a large number of swing and jazz bandleaders that were major names in music at the time but willing to come to Lake Geneva to play at the Riviera. These included such names as Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Louis Armstrong, Lawrence Welk, Count Basie, Harry James, Xavier Cougat and Jimmy Dorsey. All played to full houses. A number of top vocalists also played the Riviera during that time. It was not unusual to hear that Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Perry Como, Nat King Cole or Doris Day were appearing at
the Riviera. Tickets in the early days were often $1. The big band era drew to a close and, in addition, by the 1960s, it was noted that the building was beginning to show signs of wear and tear and needed some major repairs. By this time few performances were being held in the ballroom. “The Riviera was strictly a summertime venue as at that time they did not have heat,” current Lake Geneva Mayor Charlene Klein said. Although the building was owned by the city, officials leased it out to different contractors. It was not until 1979 that the city took over management of the Riviera.
Time of transition
While the main floor and its little shops remained popular and visitors arrived to take the boat tours from the dock, the big band era was ending and being replaced by

often referred to as the Recreation Building or continued to be called the Northport Ballroom. A contest was held to name the structure. Mrs. Hobart Smith, who suggested Riviera, was declared the winner and was awarded a prize of $25, a large sum for those times. And so, the stately building had a name, a name that has remained for more than 85 years. Surprisingly work went quickly and the building was complete enough to offer a “soft opening” on Sept. 1, 1932, just five months after construction had begun. The Ralph Williams Orchestra provided the music for a large number of attending guests filling the ballroom.
Historical status
On April 3,1986, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the building was given National Register of Historic Places status. In 2004 a significant change to the waterfront property was made with the addition of the Driehaus fountain and the brick plaza in front of the Riviera. A plaque on the plaza notes: “It is a replica of the New York City 1873 Angel of the Water Fountain at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park.” Designed by Emma Stebbens, the winged female figure
symbolized the purifying of the city’s water supply when the Croton Aqueduct opened in 1842, bringing fresh water to all New Yorkers. For this reason, she carries a lily the symbol of purity in one hand while her other hand extends outward as she blesses the water below.” The water spraying from the fountain has a crystal-like glow as it flows around the angel and glimmers in the sunlight. According to Mayor Klein, “The Riviera is a classic icon which represents the City of Lake Geneva. It is the most distinct building in the area with its unique position on the water. “Many residents of Lake Geneva remember going to the stalls on the first floor of the Riviera with their parents for ice cream. When built, the west side of the building was a bathhouse for the beach where residents spent the hot days of summer,” Klein said.
Looking ahead
Now in 2020, what does the future hold for the Riviera as it is once again in need of renovation to continue to bring residents and visitors to the area? Will the city continue to see the Riviera as its star? “We have already begun a project of upgrading and repairing the building,” Klein said. “A new roof has replaced the old one. Plans are to move the public bathrooms to the front of the building on the ground floor so they can easily be used by visitors year round.” Renovation plans also include providing a good heating system so the venue can be used year-round, making the upstairs ballroom the home of many more weddings and other events to generate more income for the city and more enjoyment for the community. “In the early days there were no doors on the north and Above: This view of the Riviera from the long pier on the lake side, was taken shortly after its completion. rock and roll. In the early 1970s, a new look was being introduced at the Riviera. A change from a classic ballroom to a sleek bar and nightclub named the Top Deck was made. Musical entertainment changed to the more raucous rock and roll. Popular R&B groups such as The Ides of March, Donna Summer, Chaka Chan, The Village People, Herman’s Hermits, the Cryin’ Shames, and Chubby Checker made their way to Lake Geneva to appear at the popular Top Deck. The crowds, mostly younger, changed the vibe of the Riviera. It became known as a rough and rowdy place, not the kind of place popular to local residents. Part of the attraction for young visitors from out of state was the lower legal drinking age of 18 in Wisconsin. To curb this attraction, when the lease expired in 1979, the city took over and closed the Top Deck. Thus, in the 1980s the active and popular upstairs of the Riviera again became dead space with no future in mind. However, officials were not about to let the star of their city die. They began a massive renovation project to restore the Riviera to its early glory. The renovation project was completed at a cost of $350,000. They began to rent out the ballroom for a variety of private and public events. It became a popular venue for weddings. Brides embraced the ballroom with its 26-foot ceilings and a beautiful colonnade that overlooks Geneva Lake on three sides of the building.

south sides of the building,” Klein said. “The ballroom could not be used until the snow melted. Without heat on the second floor, use was limited to warmer weather, after the snow was gone.” According to Klein, renovation of the building will be carried out this winter. She notes that altering the building is difficult because of its listing on the Historic Register status. Improvements to allow better use and flow of the building must be done while retaining the original beauty and look of the structure. “This is a good time to renovate the inside of the building,” Klein added. “Ninety-nine percent of the weddings booked for this year have been moved to next year because of the pandemic. We will be remodeling the restrooms, make them and the building ADA compliant. The first-floor restrooms will

hen we look back at the year 2020, it seems most people will say thank goodness it is over. For it has been a year unlike any other that most have experienced. 2020 is the year of the coronavirus pandemic, which has traveled around the world and has turned our lives upside down. For most people, their lives are not anything like they were a year ago. The pandemic became a part of our lives late last winter when cases of this new viral infection began to spread and people realized how serious this infection could be. With many seriously ill and the virus spreading, schools closed, businesses closed, people retreated to their homes and a new way of life began. For many, home became the new office
space, while others saw their businesses shut down leaving them without work or income. Children learned the computer was not only for playing games but it became their new schoolroom. Businesses closed and some reopened. Restaurants opened outdoor spaces, separated tables, and limited the number of people allowed. New cleaning procedures were put in place and servers and customers were urged to wear face masks. People carried hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes and spent much time washing their hands. It is now November and this pandemic that all had hoped would just be a memory now is still with us. While some businesses have closed their doors forever, others are open again and working to provide services and merchandise to the public as before.
Some of our local businesses shared their 2020 experience with us and their thoughts and hopes on what the holiday shopping season will be like.
Starting again at coffee house
Cup o’ Joe, a 1990s-style coffee house complete with a replica of the sofa that played a prominent part in the television show “Friends” opened in Twin Lakes three weeks before they were forced to close due to COVID-19. “It was a rough time as we had just opened after spending months working on getting the right vibes for the space,” said Dena Prestininzi owner. “We were able to open back up in May but most people weren’t ready to go sit in a coffee shop and enjoy their coffee, a snack or lunch, and visit

But most women love to shop for new clothing so eventually they will be leaving their homes where many have been isolated with their families and will make their way back into downtown Lake Geneva to find new outfits. “We have a lot of loyal customers,” said Urban. “They will be back but how soon we don’t know at this time.”

with friends.” The coffee shop serves a variety of coffees, pastries and light lunches such as soups, sandwiches and specialty items that are mostly prepared by Dena. “We are fortunate that our layout of the couch, chairs and dining room tables are well spaced and we only use about 30% of the capacity we could have,” Prestininzi added. “We were so busy the first three weeks we were open as the community embraced our business and visitors came from Chicago and Milwaukee to get a peek at the ‘Friends’ sofa.” And then everything came to a halt.” According to Prestininzi, when they reopened, they had to develop some creative events to bring people back in. They held some “Friends” events such as a wedding dress show where free tickets were given but limited the event to 30 people. Movies for children were planned and live music was offered on Saturdays. They continue to raise money for local charities such as the volunteer fire department and the high school music department as they realized the need to support the community as the community had supported them. Prestininzi voiced that she felt sorry for children who probably won’t be visiting Santa this year, to sit on his lap and share their dreams of new toys they hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning. So, they are planning a sing-along during the holidays to try to spread some Christmas cheer. Unfortunately, all of their employees were let go except for immediate family but Prestininzi is sure they will be hiring again as business continues to improve.

for sitting around a fire pit. “This year we haven’t used the fire pit as it would be too difficult to maintain distancing,” Peterson added. “Outside requires walking down a stairway not only for the customers but also for the servers as there is not a kitchen on the lower level. With fewer servers this requires more steps for each of them.” Staff is wearing masks and new cleaning procedures have been instituted including the installation of an ionization unit for filtering the air. More disposable items are in use adding to increased costs. Business is picking up as people look to spend some social time out of the house but things have not returned to the level prior to the pandemic. The restaurant is now open five days a week – Tuesday through Saturday – but only for dinner. The restaurant has introduced its fall/winter menu and staff members are looking forward to a return to more normal times, according to Peterson.
Ginger Blossom weathers the storm
Ginger Blossom is a unique business that offers both an unusual shopping space and items that are not found in other stores. Located on a large farm that has been in the family for three generations in Richmond, Illinois, the store’s merchandise is spread out in a variety of buildings including a farmhouse, a large barn, and smaller buildings.
The merchandise ranges from large fullsize metal sculptures of animals displayed on the front lawn, to hand-knit sweaters and gloves, hand painted furniture, rugs, jewelry, scarves. Many of the products come from the Far East and most are handmade there. Other items, especially hand painted furniture, is brought from Mexico and is both unique and beautiful. “We were shut down in March and remained shut down for six to eight weeks,” said Chris O’Boyle, manager. “But since then we are back up and running.” Customers are not as reluctant to shop at Ginger Blossom, because everything is so spaced out and in the open, that social distancing is easy. They do not sell online, as most items are one of a kind. At times this summer, the checkout lines would get a bit congested but they would solve the problem by opening more lines keeping customers socially distant. “We have had to make some changes in how we receive our merchandise as the ships were not sailing,” O’Boyle said. “We had to move the merchandise to air delivery which costs a bit more. We have been able to absorb the extra cost and keep our prices as they were. All our items have good prices because we go and purchase the items from those actually creating them.” The business is doing well and there is no reason to think that holiday sales will not be as expected, according to O’Boyle.
Business surges at Lyle’s TV and Appliance
Lyle’s TV and Appliance in Elkhorn is the most complete independent appliance store in the southern Wisconsin area and offers a large choice of appliances and televisions. Whether a shopper is looking for a basic stove or refrigerator or a high-end gourmet stove, a larger and better television or everything to upgrade your residence to a “smart home,” Lyle’s staff will help you through the process. “For us,” said Tom Schinke, who owns Lyles with his wife Sue, “business has been fantastic in spite of the pandemic.” According to Schinke, people spending more time in their homes have made them more aware of those items that really need to be replaced – whether it is the refrigerator or stove that is old and not working well or the washer and dryer that has stopped working altogether. “There is a problem with availability of some items, especially freezers,” Schinke said. “However, these are not items that are usually purchased for holiday gifts.” “Items like televisions and the Big Green Egg are popular gifts. We do keep a large stock of the Big Green Egg because they are so popular, so there should not be any problems there. We look forward to business continuing to be good.” Each business has dealt with changes in their operations, just as each of us has dealt with changes in our lives this year. But in spite of the difficulties they endured, they all said they are looking forward to a healthier business climate as we move into the holiday season.

So thankful... THIS YEAR HAS BEEN TOUGH, BUT A GOOD THANKSGIVING MEAL REMINDS ALL OF US OF OUR BLESSINGS

As the temperatures begin to drop and the multicolored leaves fall from the trees it reminds us that we are entering the holiday season. We begin this season with Thanksgiving where we gather together with family and friends to be thankful for our blessings especially those of this difficult past year and to enjoy a scrumptious meal gathered around the table with those we love. The tradition of Thanksgiving began with the pilgrims who gathered and served a lavish feast.
They celebrated and gave thanks for making it through the first year, especially surviving the harsh New England winter. They also remembered those who did not survive the rough journey. The feast of the early colonists was very different from the one that we offer our families. The early feast is not one that would be especially enjoyed today. The pilgrims served the fall vegetables which they had grown and were still available but they did not serve the robust turkey that graces our Thanksgiving tables. They may have added some

turkeys, pheasants, or ducks that they hunted, but being wild they were also thought to be tough and stringy. The highlight of the early Thanksgiving dinners was seafood as it was easily available, there on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean The pilgrims were satisfied with food to sustain their life and health. Today our palates are more refined and prefer high-quality foods, which we eat not just for sustenance but for pleasure. Traditionally, families today enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with turkey as its centerpiece, complete with

stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. They, like the early settlers, also enjoy many of the fall vegetables such as the various fall squash and Brussels sprouts. For some families, green beans are always included in the holiday dinner. Pies, especially pumpkin, pecan, or apple, are cap the feast. But that does not mean that other desserts are not welcomed. With so much to cook, many families now opt to go out for their Thanksgiving dinner to a place where the traditional feast is served. Two of the favorites of residents and visitors to the Lake Geneva area are the Grand Geneva Resort and the Lake Lawn Resort where elegant Thanksgiving dinners are provided. Here’s a look at both and a few other options for those planning their holiday meal:

LAKE LAWN RESORT
Along the shore of Delavan Lake, Lake Lawn Resort will be continuing to offer its traditional Thanksgiving Feast as it has in the past, on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Lake Lawn has traditionally served its Thanksgiving Feast as a buffet and will do so this year with precautions. “Safety is a priority for our 2020 Thanksgiving Feast, so our team has implemented several precautionary measures, including, but not limited to reduced seating with tables separated to allow for greater social distancing,” said Josh Ihnen, director of food and beverage outlet operations. “Staff will wear facial coverings at all times and guests will wear them when not seated at their tables. We will also not be allowing any selfservice. As guests approach the buffet, there will be an appointed Frontier Restaurant staff member that will plate the food selections for them.” Once again the buffet will be spectacular, as Executive Chef John Billings has put together a buffet that will appeal to all. While the traditional roasted turkey and the honey maple glazed bone-in ham remain the stars of the show, the additional selections will require more than one trip to the buffet. The choices begin with baby mixed greens with a variety of condiments and dressings. Fresh

DINNER AT HOME
From top: Each year in the courtyard at Lake Lawn Resort there is a beautiful fall display of pumpkins, mums, and cornstalks around the tractor. On Thanksgiving, visitors enjoy viewing the grounds and walking along the shore of Delavan Lake after finishing the gourmet buffet. Long buffet tables offering a variety of food items line the dining space at Lake Lawn Resort as guests choose where to start and how to manage their plates to allow them to sample as many choices as possible.
Thanksgiving dinner at home is a tradition, especially in large families with everyone pitching in to provide the dishes that are loved by family members. Even with guests bringing side dishes, the majority of the work of preparing the dinner falls on the host and hostess. For a bit of help with dinner start by purchasing a good quality turkey. Wilson’s Farm Meats, Elkhorn, offers both fresh and smoked turkeys in a variety of sizes according to Justin Corman of Wilson’s. “Order them now. While turkey is the most popular meat for Thanksgiving, we also carry frozen goose, pheasant, and bison for those who prefer something different,” said Corman. “Pick up some awesome shrimp which are royal red Argentinian shrimp. They are so large they look like a baby lobster. And make a perfect appetizer.” Wilson’s is also the place to pick up some cheese and sausage platters. They carry over 30 varieties of quality cheeses made locally. Laack’s cheese is a favorite, especially their 6- and 10-year aged cheddars. According to Corman, his favorite is the blue cheese marble – a combination of blue cheese and Colby cheese. If you purchase a frozen turkey remember it may take three to five days to thaw in the refrigerator. To give your turkey an extra special flavor, Executive Chef Buleje of the Grand Geneva shares some of his secrets for a perfect turkey dinner. “Start with a 24-hour wet brine. I like to use

apple juice, lavender, and honey as the three main ingredients to my brine. Then roast your turkey low and slow. In your last 20 minutes, add quarter pound of room temperature butter over the top of the turkey.” “If you make your own fresh cranberry sauce, it is great to cut it with any type of citrus and a little star anise. For your stuffing, use leftover cornbread to make the most delicious stuffing.” The work of putting the perfect Thanksgiving Feast is easier with help. Encourage the children to help with tasks. Cleaning vegetables for the younger children and cutting vegetables for the older children will make them feel that they are cooking the dinner.
TAKEOUT OPTIONS
There are also options that will allow the family to enjoy the Thanksgiving dinner at home without having to cook it. As mentioned earlier, Grand Geneva offers a take-home dinner. Contact the Grand Geneva 262-249-4788 for information or to place your order. Gooseberries Courtyard Catering, 262-7635955, Burlington, will provide a freshly cooked turkey that can be reheated at home. Reheating instructions are included. The dinner package includes the turkey, gravy, stuffing, and mashed or sweet potatoes. Additional sides can be added to the order, Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly in Lake Geneva 262-248-8798 offers three different turkey dinner packages. “The holiday package contains a 10- to 12-pound turkey along with stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey gravy and cranberry-orange relish,” said Ellen Murphy, of Stinebrink’s deli. “The deluxe dinner includes all in the holiday package and an additional side. An additional upgrade would include pumpkin or apple pie, which are made fresh in the store. The dinners should be ordered at least a week in advance and can be picked up from three days before until Thanksgiving morning. While 2020 has been a difficult year due to the pandemic, Thanksgiving offers a day to enjoy family and friends over good food and be thankful for all the blessings in our lives.

How may we help you? Specialty shops work to make shoppers comfortable
by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
With the coronavirus pandemic still raging, area shops are finding new ways to attract customers and keep them safe. Karin Bennett, owner of Cornerstone Shop and Gallery in Lake Geneva, said the biggest advantage she has is the size of her store. “Right from the get-go we required masks, added extra cleaning and began limiting the number of people who come into the store,” she said. “For us, with 10,000 square feet, it’s not too much of a challenge, but some of the smaller stores don’t have that.” For other novelty shop owners, like Christopher Springer, who owns Allison Wonderland with locations in Burlington and Lake Geneva, adding services such as an online store was necessary. “We’ve had less traffic through the stores,” he said. “June seemed busier because that was right after the lockdown and everyone was chomping at the bit to get out. But after the country saw a surge, I think that became a deterrent to a lot of grandparents, especially those at higher risk. Grandparents are who’s kept us in business all these years.” Springer added they are willing to work with customers so they feel safe, even if that means opening the store for just them to shop. “We’ll do anything they want,” he said. “They can call and we can arrange something if they will feel more comfortable shopping alone.” Allison Wonderland is a novelty toy store, which carries items not usually found in big box stores, Springer said. “We carry more unique things,” he said. “There aren’t many stores like us left even before this happened. Foot traffic is important to our store because sometimes you don’t even know something exists until you see it.” Bennett said her Lake Geneva shop, which features gifts, apparel, accessories, home items, baby items and more, has seen a steady flow of customers over the summer, but mainly visitor traffic. “Luckily, we’ve started now to see some of our regulars come back now that the tourist crowds have gone. We’re doing OK,” she said. “Even though the numbers are down, people are coming in with the intention to shop. Weddings are starting up again, and people are looking for gifts and the like. We provide curbside pickup and have even offered to deliver, but I think people want the experience of just coming in.” Bennett added that while the shop will never get back the months it lost for the shutdown, she thinks things will be all right. “Provided we don’t see another surge,” she added. “I’m hearing from customers there’s more negative impacts in a lot of cases with the isolation than with coming out and being super careful,” Bennett said. Springer agreed, saying people are happy to be able to do some of the more “normal” things now. “We cater to the kids, who are the future,” Springer said. “The kids like to come in to see what we have and play with the toys. They don’t come in and sit on their phone or tablet, that’s for sure.
“Seeing generations of kids having these memories as a child and having them come back with their kids is why I bought the business from my parents when they retired. I wanted this to continue.” The flexibility of local businesses to adapt during this crisis has brought many changes across multiple industries and it is the hope of both Springer and Bennett that people continue to support their small, locally owned businesses. “We are keeping things safe, requiring masks and social distancing and we’ve got very contentious, caring employees that will do whatever is needed to help our customers feel comfortable,” Bennett said. “My parents started this store for the kids and I didn’t want them to close it, so I bought it. I think it’s important for kids, parents and grandparents to have this resource available to them and I’m willing to do whatever our customers need to continue that relationship.” Cornerstone Shop & Gallery is at 214 Broad St., Lake Geneva. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 262-248-6988 or visit cornerstonelakegeneva.com. Allison Wonderland’s Lake Geneva shop is at 720 W. Main St. The store can be reached at 262-248-6500. The Burlington shop is at 472 N. Pine St. and can be reached at 262-763-9718.
