VETERANS ACT THROUGH TRAUMA WITH FEAST OF CRISPIAN Photo above: An ensemble of soldiers performs in “And Comes Safe Home,” which was presented initially in 2016 and will be re-written and performed again next year at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and at UW-Milwaukee.

Milwaukee theater group was a saving grace for area veteran Raymond Hubbard as he underwent treatment for opiate addiction after getting hooked on painkillers when he was injured in Iraq. “They saved my life,” said Hubbard, 39, of Pell Lake, about Bill Watson, Nancy Smith Watson and Jim Tasse, who operate Feast of Crispian, a theater group that engages veterans in performances to share their stories. The group has multiple purposes, said Tasse, a senior lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Vietnam-era veteran. Telling their stories behind the facade of a character helps veterans come to terms with their trauma, and hearing their stories helps family members and the general public better understand wartime trials, he said. “First of all, we are very clear that we are not therapists, we are actors and artists,” Tasse said. However, he said, the group, formed six years ago, NOVEMBER 2018

has therapeutic effects on the veterans, who are prompted to think about their experiences as they create scenes in a play based on acts from Shakespeare. Tasse said the veterans discover things about themselves or their experiences that they can take back to their therapists, and acting the experiences out gives them a sense of living it. “The actor’s way of expression is experience,” he said. “The pain is never going to go away but it’s possible to come to a different relationship with the pain.”
Rough road to stage
Feast of Crispian discovered Hubbard, as it does many of its actor veterans, at the Milwaukee domiciliary – a section of the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Medical Center that treats veterans for substance abuse, psychiatric rehabilitation and post-traumatic stress disorder. Hubbard ended up in the domiciliary in 2015

after overdosing on heroin around 2013. Hubbard said he became addicted to painkillers while recovering from injuries sustained in a bomb blast in Iraq in 2006. When he returned home to the Delavan area, the addiction turned to heroin, and Hubbard overdosed, he said. He faced five felony charges as a result of the overdose incident, but attended a voluntary rehabilitation program through the Madison Veterans Administration Hospital and was told the offenses wouldn’t be charged if he did so, Hubbard said. “I went through the program, learned a lot about myself, a lot about addiction and came out a better man for it,” he said. About a year later, as the charging deadline for the felony offenses approached, Hubbard was involved in a car crash and was found with marijuana in his
vehicle. At that point, he said, the District Attorney’s Office decided to pursue the pending charges, and officers knocked on the door of his home in Allens Grove with a bench warrant from the incident nearly a year earlier and took Hubbard to jail. “I thought that was well behind me,” he said. Hubbard’s attorney, Frank Lettenberger, of Delavan, was able to get Hubbard accepted into a veterans court program in Racine County, which sent Hubbard to the Milwaukee domiciliary for a 48-day stay.
At first, Hubbard saw it as an opportunity to get away from the rehab unit for a day. “One of the things about being in rehab is you can’t leave rehab,” he said. “But
The acting bug bites

this thing let you leave rehab for a day to go play act with these people, so I do.” Bill and Nancy Watson and Tasse spend “weekend intensives” with veterans who are hospitalized at the VA and get many of their actor veterans that way, Tasse said. Most of the participants in the Feast of Crispian are from the Milwaukee area, he said. Hubbard lives the farthest away in Pell Lake. “He’s a very talented young man,” Tasse said.
8
Hubbard said he hadn’t acted since he was a teenager, and the desire returned immediately. “The bug bites back,” he said. Hubbard along with about a dozen other veterans – and William Shakespeare, he notes – wrote a play, “And Comes Safe Home,” that blends their war stories with scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. In a scene from “Julius Caesar” when Cassius says, “I am a soldier. I,” for example, the actors are given prompts that help them think about their experiences, Tasse said. “Were you a good solider? Were you proud?” actors are asked, Tasse said. The prompts help the veterans “get below your thinking brain and have a way to express that,” he said. Particularly when dealing with trauma, Tasse said, words can’t adequately describe the experience but acting through them can put them back in a safe place. Tasse called the prompts a “live fire exercise for the soul.” NOVEMBER 2018
“You use your own story, but you have the mask of Cassius to hide behind,” he said. The veterans wrote and performed “And Comes Safe Home” at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee four times in 2016. The play will be rewritten for presentation next spring at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and next fall at UWMilwaukee, Tasse said. About a dozen veterans, including Hubbard again, will act in the production. It will be presented May 23 in the Stiemke Studio at Milwaukee Rep and will have a Wednesday through Sunday run at the end of October at UWMilwaukee, Tasse said. For Hubbard, his involvement in the production opened the next chapter in his life. “What I got out of it is my second purpose, my second calling for the next 40 years of my life,” he said. “… And I make people laugh.”

Wife of cable TV CEO embraces Stone Manor restoration project

Tina Trahan
In a community of mansions, Stone Manor stands out as the largest of those that line the shores of Geneva Lake. Looking like one of the great houses in a Masterpiece Theatre series, it overlooks the lake from 10 acres of manicured lawn a half mile east of downtown Lake Geneva. Now, the historic mansion that was built in 1901 but divided into condominiums in recent decades, is being returned to its early splendor.
SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
In 2016, Elmhurst, Ill., native Tina Trahan, who had recently married Starz Cable Network CEO Chris Albrecht and moved to Santa Monica, Calif., was visiting family in Elmhurst when she learned that the main floor condo at Stone Manor was for sale. Trahan, who was familiar with Lake Geneva from her childhood, was fascinated by the idea. She and Albrecht drove up to Lake Geneva,
9
looked at the property, purchased it for just under $6 million, and began making plans to restore it to its original splendor. Not long after Trahan bought the first floor, other condo owners approached her about buying their units. So far, she has purchased a double condo on the top floor for $1.9 million, a second-floor double for $3.4 million, a second-floor single unit for $2.25 million for a total investment of $13.5 million. There is one single-unit condominium on the top floor that she doesn’t own. “If that comes up for sale, I’ll buy it,” she said, “but if it doesn’t, I won’t worry about it.” If it does, given the history of condo prices in the building, she will have spent about $18 million for the property. When Trahan purchased the first unit in 2016, she knew she was buying a “fixerupper.” She said that, although the condo owners had done their best to maintain the property, it was showing signs of age and neglect. An outdoor fountain was cracked, the roof was leaking, windows were rotting, mold was growing under the wallpaper and
handrails were rusty. She estimates that she has already spent a million dollars on repairs and that the work will take at least another year.
Seeking authenticity
If you have a mansion that has exterior walls of dressed Bedford limestone and Tennessee marble interior, you don’t just look in the Yellow Pages to have it restored. You comb the country for experts who are used to working with such materials. Happily, some of them who are familiar with Stone Manor’s type of opulent architecture still live in the Lake Geneva area. She says she plans to maintain the home’s historic integrity while removing outdated and deteriorated fixtures and furnishings. Trahan has assured members of the community that she didn’t buy the property as an investment to be restored and resold. She says she plans to keep the estate and plans to spend about six weeks of each summer here with her husband and two children.
Many Lake Geneva residents and property owners are thrilled to see what is happening at the most visible mansion on the lake. “So many of the great houses have been demolished that it is a godsend to see someone restoring one as prominent and historically valuable as Stone Manor,” said Carolyn Johnson.
History of the mansion
Originally called Younglands, the mansion was built as a single-family summer residence by Chicago jeweler and real estate magnate Otto Young in 1901 for what was initially supposed to be $150,000 but ended up costing more than $1 million. Young immigrated from Germany in the 1880s and began his career by selling costume jewelry from a pushcart in New York. After the Chicago Fire of 1871, he decided that the city on Lake Michigan offered great opportunity and he moved west. Young was among those who believed the city would rebuild and the price of property in Chicago would increase

dramatically and he bought as much as he could afford. That land later became known as Chicago’s Loop. In 1898, Young bought a house on Geneva Lake and had it moved so that he could build a bigger one on the site. And build he did. The 40,000-square-foot house originally contained about 50 rooms. The doorknobs, plumbing and electrical fixtures on the main level were plated with 14 carat gold, while those on the upper floors were made of sterling silver. According to Gage Marine’s “Discover Lake Geneva,” “the main floor ballroom features an $8,000 crystal chandelier, ornate marble fireplace and huge mirrors. Leading into the dining room, which held a handcarved table that could seat 100 guests, was an 8-foot-wide corridor lined with elaborately carved satinwood panels. It was on these walls that the Youngs displayed their extensive art collection. “Also on the main floor were a parlor, library, music room, game room, butler’s pantry and a huge kitchen.”
FILE PHOTO Spirit of Geneva Lakes
The Stone Manor on Geneva Lake’s southeast shore is being restored by Tina Trahan, the wife of Starz Cable Network CEO Chris Albrecht.
“The second and third floors contained 16 family and guest bedrooms that averaged 20 by 25 feet and had adjoining sitting rooms and baths. The fourth floor was designed for recreation and contained a large gym and a nine-hole miniature golf course. The roof was originally designed as a garden,” which as the years went by had a tendency to leak. “The house also had two sub-basements, one of which was fitted with a three-lane bowling alley, bicycle storage and a vault for the family’s valuables and jewelry brought by guests. The other subbasement was used for storing ice from the lake that was used for a primitive air conditioning system in the summer, and a mammoth coal bunker that was used to supply the double system of steam-heating boilers that were designed so that if one failed, the other would be able to keep the house warm.” When Young died in 1906, just five years after completing his summer home, he left an estate conservatively valued at $25 million, which would be $648 million

today. His wife, Ann, died 10 years later. The family had lost interest in spending summers at the lake, preferring to go abroad. The estate remained in the family until 1938, when one of his descendants donated it to the Episcopal Church to be used as a private girls’ school. The school struggled along for a few years before succumbing to financial reality. In the early 1960s, Walworth County foreclosed on the property. In 1968, a developer purchased it at a tax auction for $75,000 and turned the main floor into a French restaurant and the upper floors into condominiums. The first floor was the only one that remained undivided. He also built a swimming pool on the roof. After the restaurant closed in 1978, the space was put to various uses, including a Christmas tree museum. According to Dennis Rodkin, writing in Chicago Business, “in 1990, Chicago trader Tom Ricci bought and restored the property, then sold off the condos.

The trust’s mission also recognizes the importance of environmental education for young and offers custom field day events for area schools every year. Field days give students the opportunity to learn firsthand about natural areas management and to collect scientific data to support land management decisions. The trust also hosts several community events each year. Volunteers and members of the Kettle Moraine Land Trust help improve wildlife habitat and native ecosystems by working with landowners and in partnership with organizations and municipalities. The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation provides general operating and project-specific grants that lead to landscape-scale land preservation and stewardship in the Chicago and southeastern Wisconsin areas. Yerkes Observatory, Williams Bay, closed this fall according to officials because the facility and its instrumentation “no longer contribute directly to the research mission of the University of Chicago.”
FILE PHOTO Spirit of Geneva Lakes
ASTROPHYSICS GROUP PLANS TO CARRY ON WORK AT YERKES OBSERVATORY Yerkes Observatory, an astronomical observatory in Williams Bay, has been referred to as “the birthplace of modern astrophysics.” Founded in 1987 and owned by the University of Chicago, the building closed Oct. 1. As operations ceased, most staff were expected to relocate, with the exception of a maintenance supervisor who will remain on site. Yerkes’ 77 acres are at 373 West Geneva St., in Williams Bay. Tours and telescope viewings continued running up until Yerkes’ closing day. The site’s most famous attraction was a 40-inch refracting telescope – the largest refracting telescope in the world. Though the closing of the facility has received much negative reaction, the work
being done at Yerkes will by Bridget Bartal continue to progress and STAFF WRITER expand offsite. Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) plans to sustain and preserve the former Yerkes’ programs for the greater community. “We are the entities who are going to move the education programs forward when the building closes,” GLAS community outreach coordinator Sheila Venteicher said. GLAS runs four programs: Dark Skies, Innovators Developing Accessible Tools for Astronomy, Girls Who Code and Star Parties. “I work with Girls Who Code. goal is closing the gender gap,” Venteicher said. The program, which split its time between Walworth Elementary School and Yerkes Observatory, will now solely be operating out of the elementary school. During a 12-week program, Girls Who Code met and interviewed women scientists in astronomy, meteorology and more. One of these women is Katya Gozman, a third-year student at University of Chicago. Gozman is majoring in astronomy and physics. “She is the youngest person to be fully trained in the great refractor. She developed a rubric, a training manual and has taught other students how to use it. She is a huge mentor for the girls,” Venteicher said. Dark Skies, another GLAS program, had two interns this summer who are interested in environmental sustainability and solutions to light pollution. The hope is that another local attraction – Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy – will become a dark-skies park in the future. “Kishwauketoe is shooting for a designation as a dark-skies park. It is a three-year process, and there are only about 20 dark-skies parks in the world,” GLAS Director Kate Meredith said. The interns discussed their work through Dark Skies, which has offices at Yerkes. “We are taking readings of sky quality at Kishwauketoe and around Geneva Lake. Currently, there are a lot of bad types of lighting. You should keep lights on a red spectrum,” intern Becky White said. The interns plan to incentivize businesses around Geneva Lake who are using environmentally friendly lighting at their locations. Dark Skies had offices in Yerkes. “Everything we do benefits from being in this building, but we can sustain the programs offsite. We’re looking for another office in Williams Bay,” Meredith said. As separate entities, Yerkes Future Foundation is strictly focused on getting custody of the grounds, while GLAS Education is, “the safety net for the Yerkes education programs,” Meredith explained. GLAS Education is in the process of raising $100,000 for the continuation of its programs offsite. As for the future of the building, staff at Yerkes said they had not heard from the University of Chicago about what may be next for the location. The goal, according to staff, is that the tours and programs will continue at the observatory once Yerkes has a new owner. For more information about GLAS, visit www.glaseducation.org or follow them on Facebook.

New chef expands ethnic offerings at Stefana’s on Lake Como 16

An Italian restaurant on Lake Como will add some German cuisine to its menu with the arrival of a new chef. Chef Alfred Beltoya has joined Stefana’s at the French Country Inn on Lake Como. Beltoya, of Waterford, got his start in the culinary business at the House of Gerhard in Kenosha. He began his 15 years at Gerhard when he was 16 years old and became head chef at the age of 20. “I learned all the secret German specialties,” he said. Among the German specialties that will be added to Stefana’s menu are schnitzel – thin, pounded, fried meat; and rouladen – thin beef

stuffed with pickles, bacon, onion and mustard, rolled and roasted. Other German cuisine will be sauerbraten – German pot roast; lamb; duck; liver and onions; pork shanks; short ribs; and kassler rippchen – smoked pork chops; knackwurst; and spatzle. “So many people ask for German,” restaurant general manager Lara Perkins said. Stefana’s opened in the former Kirsch’s Restaurant in December with a grand opening Feb. 2, Perkins said.

A roaring fireplace casts a warm glow on diners at Stefana’s restaurant on Como Lake. The restaurant’s menu has recently been revamped with the arrival of a new chef.
A couple of other restaurants have occupied the 100-plusyear-old building since Kirsch’s closed several years ago, but none has made a go of it, she said. The restaurant was closed for about two years before Stefana’s opened, she said. Stefana’s offers casual fine dining and live music on Friday and Saturday nights. It sits on the shore of Lake Como directly across the lake from Geneva National’s clubhouse. The restaurant’s dining room seats 140 people, and its three decks built around the property’s oak trees provide outdoor seating when weather permits. The 100-plus-year-old building was a known gangster hangout and had a speakeasy in its basement at one time. George “Baby Face” Nelson and John Herbert Dillinger, both of whom died in 1934, were said to have ties to the restaurant. News clippings of the restaurant and hotel’s gang ties are on display in a corner of Stefana’s lounge. “The ambience, the view, everything – most people come here to relax,” Perkins said. “It’s not a rush.” The restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays for the winter. Its lounge opens at 4 p.m., and its kitchen is open from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 4:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Perkins said the restaurant closed for a couple of weeks with the change in kitchen staff but is now open and looking for cooking staff to assist Beltoya. Since his start at Gerhard, Beltoya has cooked at Bristol Oaks Country Club, the Fireside Restaurant in Kenosha, Doc’s on the Fox in Waterford and most recently at Stoneridge Inn in Hales
Corners, which is going out of business. He graduated in the top 10 of his class from a Chicago culinary art school and has won awards including being a guest chef at the Pfister in Milwaukee where he cooked for restaurateurs. He began cooking with his grandma when he was a little boy and has always loved to create dishes, he said. As head chef at Stefana’s, he aims to bring consistency to its quality Italian food and add German items to the menu. Beltoya is willing to take young people under his wing and teach them to become sous chefs and cooks. Beltoya changed the restaurant’s Friday fish fry from breaded to beer-battered Icelandic cod and offers prime rib every Saturday. Fish offerings also include lake perch, walleye, salmon and Mahi Mahi. The restaurant’s rouladen will be served with red cabbage and spatzle, and its German platter will include kassler rippchen, roulade, knackwurst and spatzle. Prices range from $15 to $62 for Stefana’s 36-ounce porterhouse steak. Stefana’s also plans to offer a Sunday buffet, a pasta bar, German desserts such as schaum torte and apple strudel and a traditional Thanksgiving meal, Perkins said.

AREA IS KNOWN FOR ITS DANISH KRINGLE
Ages
A visit to Racine would not be complete without a stop at one or several of the bakeries famous for their kringles. Kringles are a Danish pastry that was designated as the Wisconsin State pastry in 2013, but they have a much longer history. These old time Danish treats are simply special. They are best described as rich, flaky, decadent and somewhat addicting. They are a fine quality treat that dates back to the 1800s. Kringles made their way to the Racine area in the mid 1800s with the influx of Danish immigrants looking to make the area their new home. It is said that they may have chosen this area in southern Wisconsin because the climate was similar to their climate in Denmark. They came to the area to farm

as many had done in Denmark and each family brought a recipe for the Danish treat that was a part of their lives. It didn’t take long for some of the Danish bakers to open bakeries to provide the familiar Danish sweets to those who may not have had the time to bake them. The original kringle was a large pretzel-shaped sweet dough filled with an almond paste and frosted with a light glaze. The symbol for the Danish Guild bakers became the pretzel-shaped kringle with the royal crown on the top. It’s a symbol seen at many of the bakeries in Racine today.
LABOR-INTENSIVE PROCESS
SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes
Larsen Bakery, at 3311 Washington St., Racine, proudly displays the kringle symbol on its sign.
Creating a kringle is a laborintensive job. The dough is rolled thin, usually by placing it through a “sheeter” which produces large sheets of dough approximately 3 feet square in size. They are then cut into squares and spread with butter. “The dough is folded into layers,” said Cindy Bendsten of Bendtsen Bakery. “When ready to bake it will contain 37 layers.” It is replaced in the refrigerator and the process is repeated. It takes
three days of working with the dough before it is ready to be filled, rolled into the final ring shape and baked. In the early days the kringles were made in the pretzel shape as they had been in Denmark. According to Don Hutchinson of Larsen’s bakery, the first kringle was a gift for the king. “It contained cardamom, custard, raisins, almond, and topped with sugar and crushed almonds,” Hutchinson said. “Since the king was pleased, he allowed the crown to be used over the kringle. The pastry has been winning over fans since. “In 1956 President Dwight Eisenhower and his wife Mamie received a kringle as a gift. They noted that it was their favorite pastry,” said Rebecca Jackson, of O&H Bakery.
KRINGLEVILLE The downtown area of Racine quickly became a center for Danish pastries. Many of the bakeries that were there in the mid 1900s are still there today. Some of them create their kringles in the same manner as they did

in the early days. For a while the area was known as Kringleville. It was the Racine Bakers Club that officially changed the shape from that of the pretzel to the oval that is known today as the Racine kringle. The shape of the oval made forming the kringle less time consuming and eliminated the overlapping heavy areas of dough. The original kringles were filled with an almond paste but the bakeries began to experiment with different fillings, which included pecan, a variety of fruit fillings, and cheese. Today most of the bakeries produce 25 to 30 varieties as well as special fillings for the holidays. According to the bakers included in this story, the favorite seems to be the pecan with one exception. Larsen’s bakery customers still prefer the almond filling. While kringles are available year-round, demand for them increases during the Christmas holidays. Businesses often purchase large numbers to give as gifts to their customers. Even individuals are known to purchase 20 or 30 to distribute to friends and family or to serve to guests during the holiday season. According to Cindy Bendtsen, they ship 25,000 to 30,000 kringles in November and December. The kringles can be frozen for three to six months without losing their quality. For a special treat anytime but especially for the holidays, now is the time to join the legions of kringle fans. Here’s a look at some of the local bakeries that make the Danish treat:
The original kringle was filled with almond paste, but today there are over 30 varieties of fillings used to please customers. The most popular is pecan. Some of the fillings are seasonal.
For many years kringles were exclusively topped with a light frosting. Today chocolate-topped Kringles are popular.

Larsen’s Bakery
3311 Washington Ave., Racine 262-633-4298 • LARSENSKRINGLE.COM
Larsen’s Bakery is another of the longtime bakeries in Racine that specialize in kringles. The bakery was purchased from Eimer Larsen in 1969 by Ernie Hutchinson. Hutchinson kept the Larsen name. Today Ernie’s children, Don Hutchinson and Debbie Jerdee, run the bakery. Kringles are made here in the traditional way using quality fillings and hand-rolled dough. Each kringle requires three days to complete. What is different about Larsen’s kringles is that they do not contain any butter. “We are a vegan bakery so instead of the butter that would be spread through the layers, we use a non-trans-fat spread (Rollin Short),” said. Larsen’s offers a full retail line of kringles in a variety of flavors. “Our Kringles are made fresh every day,” Hutchison said. During the holiday season the small interior of the bakery is often filled with customers waiting to pick up their pre-ordered kringles.
Bendtsen’s Bakery
3200 Washington, Racine 262-633-0365 • WWW.BENDTSENSBAKERY.COM
Bendtsen’s Bakery was opened at the Racine location in 1934 by Laurits Bendt Bendtsen, who came from Odense, Denmark. The bakery has remained in the family over the years and is now owned by the fourth generation Bendtsen, Bendt Bendtsen II. Their kringles are still made the same way they were when Laurits first opened the bakery. Top quality ingredients are used. “We still hand roll our kringles,” said Cindy Bendtsen. It’s a process that requires much time and work. “The process continues to take three days as the dough is folded into 37 layers and refrigerated between foldings.” No preservatives are used in Bendsten kringles and they continue to be baked in the rotary oven that has served the bakery since the 1950s. The rotary oven insures even cooking. They offer 23 different fillings, including some seasonal ones such as strawberry rhubarb, raisin, and poppy seed. For their 25th anniversary in business they created a kringle that was so large it was able to feed 2,000 visitors. While Bendtsen’s Bakery has chosen to stay small, maintaining their original bakery and hand rolling every kringle, they have not sacrificed quality or taste. Cindy Bendtsen recommends ordering your holiday kringles now. They will ship anywhere.

and daughter-in-law, Myrna, purchased it from him. Today the fourth generation of Olesens still runs the bakery. Over the years the bakery has changed and grown. What started as one small bakery has grown into five locations, three in Racine, one in Sturtevant, and one in Oak Creek. The flagship store on Washington Avenue is the largest and newest and announces their Danish heritage with a reproduction of a Viking ship displayed in front of the store. Originally every kringle was made by hand. According to Rebecca Jackson, Manager of the flagship bakery, “Today we use more modern methods of creating the Kringles due to the large volume we make. But we still take the three days to make the dough and use the finest quality ingredients.” “We also make all of our own fillings from quality fruits, cheeses, and nuts,” Jackson said. They produce several specialty kringles. Among their best known is the Wisconsin Kringle, so named because of the filling: Door County cherries; Wisconsin Rapids cranberries; and cream cheese from north of Milwaukee. At Thanksgiving comes the Kringle Pie, a cinnamon, apple pie with a kringle baked on its top. O & H sells both locally and internationally. They offer a two-day

It is also the time when everyone begins the hustle and bustle of preparing for the holiday – when baking, shopping, and decorating are the activities of the day. There is a place that purposely steps back from the hustle and bustle of holiday into a time and place where the beauty of the season prevails. That place is Elkhorn, The Christmas Card Town. While Elkhorn is the county seat of Walworth

The paintings were to depict Christmas time in America and not surprisingly Elkhorn, the Christmas Card Town, was chosen as the community to be featured in the paintings. County it still retains an old-fashioned country feeling. Built around a town square it harkens back to a time when gathering on the square was the center of social activities. Many of the homes in the area that were built in the 1880s, tracing back to the early days of the community, are beautifully maintained and decorated for the season. These decorations succeed in giving the homes and the city a Christmas card look. Some of the homes are constructed of the yellow Elkhorn brick. Which was a popular building material of the time, although many of these homes were later painted white to give

them a fresh new look. There are many examples of Victorian-style homes in the area. Some of these two-story homes, many with circular turrets, gabled roofs and their gingerbread lattice work are also known for their multiple windows and a broad front porch, making them perfect for holiday decorating.
A joyous tradition
According to information from the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce, the tradition of decorating the community traces

back to the days of World War II when a Christmas decorating program was initiated to add some joy to the trying times and transformed the downtown area into a scene from a Christmas card. In 1952 a television series known as March of Time came to Elkhorn to film one of its programs depicting a “small American town during the Christmas season.” The town square was decorated on three sides with scenes cut from wood. A church, a gingerbread house, and a Santa were among the scenes represented on three sides of the square, according to Chamber Executive Director Chris Clapper. It was this program that resulted in the moniker “Elkhorn, the Christmas Card Town,” a name that has continued through the years. With its beautifully decorated square and homes, the episode became a success and was seen by millions of viewers. In fact, the episode was so successful that it was rerun for several years and can still be found on YouTube. Six years later, in 1958, Elkhorn and
its holiday decorations again became the subject of interest. Ford Motor Company commissioned Cecil Johnson, a New York artist, to produce six watercolor paintings to be used to illustrate an article in their company magazine, “Ford Times.” The paintings were to depict Christmas time in America and not surprisingly Elkhorn, the Christmas Card Town, was chosen as the community to be featured in the paintings.
Painted into history
A series of six paintings were produced by Johnson for Ford. Five of the six paintings were later reprinted by a major publisher as artwork for their Christmas card lines. Thus these scenes of the Elkhorn community made their way into homes throughout the nation as hundreds of thousands were printed. The Ford Motor Company initially donated one of the paintings to the City of Elkhorn. Eventually all six made their way back to the city where they had been created. Two of them now hang in City SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
Hall and the other four are on display in the library. While Elkhorn continued to be known as the Christmas Card Town there were not any new Christmas cards produced until 1996 when Jan Castle-Reed was commissioned to paint a card that again focused on the Christmas spirit of Elkhorn. Castle-Reed, who was also known as Elkhorn’s “Artist n Residence,” used the medium of oil painting for her work unlike Cecil Johnson who was a water colorist. She chose a building of significance to Elkhorn. It was the Frank Holton home, built circa 1930 for the head of the Holton Band Instrument Company in Elkhorn. At the time of the painting the home was owned by Jan Castle-Reed and her husband. Castle-Reed would go on to produce paintings for each of the next two years that would be turned into a Christmas greeting card. In 1999 a different artist was chosen to paint a wildlife scene. Earl Gustavson painted a scene that depicted both wildlife

and Elkhorn’s history. His scene was of a fox alongside a tree where elk antlers were seen hanging from a branch of the tree. Elkhorn had been given its name back in the 1800s by Col. Samuel F. Phoenix when crossing through the area, he noticed a set of elk antlers in a tree.
A tradition is born
In 2000 Jan Castle-Reed returned as the artist to carry on the tradition of creating the painting that would be used to create the yearly Christmas card. Each year through the early years of the new century, she produced another holiday scene representing the Christmas traditions of Elkhorn. Her paintings captured significant homes that displayed the Christmas decorating traditions. In 2006 she captured the spirit of Elkhorn’s 25th Annual Christmas Parade. Using the theme “It’s Never Too Early to Shop for Christmas,” she painted a scene from the Walworth County Fair with a Christmas trimmings booth among the cotton candy and taffy apple stands. The holiday booth came complete with a decorated Christmas tree in front and also a sign stating that Elkhorn Christmas Cards

were available. Was this an actual display at the fair or was this Castle-Reed’s way of bringing another important aspect of life in Elkhorn out for all to see? Castle-Reed continued to produce a painting each year to be used for the yearly Christmas card through 2010. Her 2010 painting was of a Victorian style home decorated for the holidays. Her style seemed to have evolved into a less detailed depiction. “In 2011 she started the painting for that year’s Christmas card, but shortly before the painting was due, we were notified that she was unable to finish due to medical concerns, possibly due to diminished Serving You For Over 50 Years
vision,” Clapper said. “So a substitute had to be found on short notice.” The decision was to reissue the card that depicted Christmas at the Webster House with Joseph Webster at his piano while wife, Joanna, decorated the tree and their four children played. “The card was softened and lightened which gave it a slightly different appearance from the earlier card,” Clapper said.

Christmas card and continues to produce a painting each year. “His style is different from Jan’s,” Clapper said. “His drawings are more concrete with straight lines, more like an architect.” He has used some of the same themes as Jan, such as the Frank Holton house, Santa from the community’s annual parade and the Sprague Theater, which was built in 1928. Originally the painting for the year’s Christmas card was unveiled at the County Fair during Labor Day weekend. In 2011 it was moved to the chamber’s Oktoberfest, which continues to this day. This year’s Christmas Card Town holiday festivities begin on the evening of Nov. 30, when a tree lighting ceremony is held in the square. The tree lighting is accompanied by a performance from an elementary school choir. Elkhorn’s three elementary schools rotate the performance each year. The tree lighting is accomplished magically by Santa and a special friend. After the tree lighting, participants head to the Matheson Library where hot chocolate and cookies are served while a piano recital by local students adds to the ambience of the evening. many children as possible until 8:30 p.m. Of course Santa will need to return home at that time to get his rest for the parade the next day. The tree lighting is sponsored by Advia Credit Union and facilitated by the Chamber. A special child or family is chosen to be Santa’s special helper throughout the events. The child gets to ride with Santa to the tree lighting and back to the library and also has time alone with Santa at the Chamber office
prior to the tree lighting. “This year will be the 37th Christmas Card Town Parade in Elkhorn,” Clapper said, noting that 80 to 100 floats are anticipated. “Many communities have to limit the number of floats because of lack of adequate staging areas. We are fortunate to have the use of the fairgrounds as our staging area so we never run out of space. “Some of our floats appear in the parade here at 1:30 and are done in time to head to Lake Geneva and appear in their evening parade,” Clapper added. “In the parade there is a semi filled with children from one of
the grade schools that did not sing at the tree lighting. These children enjoy singing Christmas Carols while the parade advances through town.” If you haven’t been to Elkhorn during this special time of year, this is the year to see why Elkhorn has continued to enjoy the designation as the Christmas Card Town. The annual Christmas cards are available for sale at various businesses throughout the area and at the Chamber office. For more information contact the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce, 203 E. The Webster House has had a long and varied history. The home was originally built in the area of the downtown square and was used as a land grant office before being moved to its current location where it served as the home of the Webster family. The historical society museum takes visitors through the time when Elkhorn was known as the home of musicians, music, and manufacturers of musical instruments. Back in the early 1800s the area that today is Elkhorn, was an open prairie crossed by an army trail. By the mid 1800s, when it had been surveyed, it had already been given the name Elkhorn by Col. F. Phoenix when he spied a set of elk antlers hanging from a tree. When Le Grand Rockwell and a group of friends looked for some available land, they chose this area and in 1837, Rockwell, along with Daniel and Milo Bradley filed claims and moved into the area. Today Elkhorn is the Walworth County seat.
The Webster house A trip into the history of Elkhorn requires a visit to the campus of the Walworth Historical Society’s buildings, beginning with the Webster House. On a quiet tree-lined street in Elkhorn stands a white Greek revival home that traces its roots back to the 1800s. Built by Le Grand Rockwell, one of the original settlers to the area, its home was not at its present location but on the square in central Elkhorn. Over time the home has served as an office, a store, a post office, the land grant office and as a courthouse. It later was moved to its current location on Rockwell Street where it became the home of the Joseph Philbrick Webster family and the place where he taught students music while also spending time writing his own musical compositions. The house was one of the first built in Elkhorn and as mentioned earlier, was in the area that is now the town square. The building was necessary until the county built a new building and the home was moved to its current location at 9 E. Rockwell. It was here that Joseph Philbrick Webster with his family made their home in 1857. Webster was born in New Hampshire in 1819 and from an early age showed an interest in music. He studied with distinguished composers such as Lowell Mason and George Webb. His career included touring as a concert singer and he was reported to have accompanied “The Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind as her pianist when she performed in Madison, Indiana, where Webster had moved with his wife, Joanna. Joanna had been a music student of Webster prior to their marriage. The Webster family later made their home in Racine but Joseph developed a severe form of bronchitis and the family moved to Elkhorn away from Lake Michigan, which was thought to have caused his bronchitis. Elkhorn is the only city in Walworth County that is not located along a river or lake. The Websters had four children and bestowed musical middle names on the boys: Joseph Hayden, Frederick Handel, and Louis Beethoven. Their daughter, Mary, was given her mother’s maiden name as her middle name, yet she is the only one of the children who pursued a career in music.
These portraits of Joseph Webster and his wife Joanna hang above the piano in the Webster House Museum.
Board Member Pat Blackmer (left) and President James Boardman pose with the 1857 plat map on display at the Webster House. It is the oldest plat map of the area.
Musical past The City of Elkhorn has been well known for music. A band was organized in 1860. Webster was a member of the band and encouraged local musicians to join. Webster spent his time in Elkhorn continuing his musical career. He began composing music and it is said that he wrote over 1,000 musical compositions. Two of his best known are “Lorena,” a favorite during our Civil War that was popular with members of both sides of the conflict and the Christian hymn “In the Sweet By and By.” The story is told that Webster came into the local drugstore not feeling well. When Sanford Fillmore Bennett, the pharmacist, commented on Webster’s illness, Webster replied that he would be better in the sweet by and by.
Elkhorn was given its name by Col. Samuel Phoenix who spied these antlers in a tree in the area.

Bennett who wrote poems for the local newspaper, the Elkhorn Independent, used the line to write a poem right there in the drugstore. Webster was so impressed with the poem that he immediately wrote the music. The original poem, in Bennett’s own handwriting, is on display in the Webster House. Joseph and Joanna Webster remained in Elkhorn and lived in the house on Rockwell until their deaths. During their time in Elkhorn, Joseph taught music and established the city band. There are still summer concerts in the park. Their son Fred and his wife Mary continued to make the house their home after his parents’ deaths. After the deaths of Fred and Mary, the family decided to sell the home. It was purchased by Walworth County to be used by the Historical Society.
The city raised the money from their 2000 residents and provided Holton with his building. In 1918 Holton’s musical instrument factory opened in Elkhorn and continued there until 2011.

Holton was also said to have built about 27 houses to provide for his many workers coming to the area and unable to find available housing. The bungalows were said to have been designed by a Chicago builder and were kit houses, with everything precut and shipped by rail. In order to let the community know how much the Holton business was contributing to Elkhorn’s economy, one week Holton paid all his workers in silver dollars. When these silver dollars began to appear in the merchant’s cash drawers they realized the prosperity that he had Museum endures brought to the city. Reinke Resource Center and the Paul and Katharine Schmidt Library. Reinke was a long time member of the Walworth County Historical Society and served as its president for many years. She personally provided some of the funds to procure the building. Reinke was a teacher, author of the Images of America book, Elkhorn, depicting the history of the area. She served as a columnist for the local newspaper along with her work at the Historical Society. She died in January 2018 at the age of 96. The Resource Center is an ever-evolving work of historical memorabilia of the county. Board Member Pat Blackmer shared some of her knowledge about the research center. The 1857 Platt map, the oldest in the county is framed on the wall. It is a researchers heaven for it has a file of county surnames and information on families that have lived in the county. There is a large collection of postcards that have been donated. If you’re looking to research any bit of Walworth County history, this is the place to be.
