Music by the Lake is back with a varied slate for 2016

The annual Music by the Lake outdoor summer concert series features a varied slate in 2016 – from Micky Dolenz, the voice of the Monkees, to allmale vocal phenomenon Straight No Chaser, to the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein with the Chicago Philharmonic and Broadway vocalists.

The series’ 16th season, which includes weekend events from June 26 through Aug. 20 at George Williams Collage of Aurora University in Williams Bay, features performances to appeal to a wide range of entertainment tastes.

The shows are performed in the college’s Ferro Pavilion on the shores of Geneva Lake.

Public ticket sales begin at 9 a.m. on May 10.

Music by the Lake does not charge a service fee on ticket orders.

The performance features Broadway vocalists Jenn Gambatese and Nathaniel Stampley, and will be hosted by composer Oscar Hammerstein II’s grandson, Oscar Andy Hammerstein III. The program will feature songs from legendary Broadway shows such as “The King and I,” “Carousel,” “Oklahoma!” and “South Pacific.”

Oscar Hammerstein II and lyricist Richard Rodgers began what one critic has called the “most fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre,” a partnership whose musicals ultimately earned 35 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards. Both Time magazine and CBS News placed Rodgers and Hammerstein among the top 20 artists of the 20th century.

Originally comprised of principals from the Lyric Opera Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic is now a collective of more than 200 of the highest-level classical musicians performing in the Chicago area today. The Chicago Tribune calls it “one of the country’s finest symphonic orchestras.”

A writer, lecturer and family historian, Oscar Andy Hammerstein III has devoted much of his life to studying and preserving his family’s heritage and contribution to American Oscar Andy Hammerstein culture.

Guests who are inspired to learn basic steps will be able to enjoy free waltz lessons with Dance Factory instructors prior to the performance. The program includes Johan Strauss Jr.’s ever-popular “Tales from the Vienna Woods” and “The Blue Danube” as well as works by Lehar, Mahler and Tchaikovsky.

Now in its 16th season, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director David Anderson, boasts talented musicians from southeast Wisconsin and northern Illinois. July 9 – The voice of the Monkees Micky Dolenz celebrates nostalgic pop

Micky Dolenz, drummer and vocalist behind the 1960s pop sensation the Monkees makes his Music by the Lake debut with a special solo appearance at 7:30 p.m. on July 9.

Dolenz first emerged as a performer at age 10 when he starred in the TV series “Circus

Boy,” which aired from 1956 to 1958, and he continued to appear on television in several supporting roles. From the day “The Monkees” first aired in 1966, Dolenz, along with fellow actor/musicians Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, shot to fame, helping to turn out five platinum albums and three number-one hits by 1968.

July 16 – YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox perform their interpretations of today’s biggest hits Online phenomenon Postmodern Jukebox makes its festival debut at 7:30 p.m. on July 16, performing genre-bending interpretations of today’s chart-topping songs. Postmodern Jukebox is the brainchild of pianist and arranger Scott Bradlee, who began to test his musical creativity by rewriting 1980s pop tunes as jazz, swing and ragtime arrangements. After posting solo video performances of these remakes on YouTube in 2009, Bradlee became a virtual sensation.

By 2013 Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox’s revolving cast of 50 musicians were posting a new video each week and attracting tens of thousands of views. Today, more than 160 videos later,

Postmodern Jukebox’s YouTube channel boasts 1.9 million subscribers and more than 400 million views. In just four years the band has released 12 albums, including last year’s “Top Hat on Fleek,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart.

As Bradlee recently told Parade.com, Postmodern Jukebox is a “musical time machine,” taking multi-generational audiences down a weirdly nostalgic road without ever straying very far from today’s pop favorites.

Aug. 20 – All-male vocal phenomenon Straight No Chaser reinvents the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. The members of Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal – the captivating sound of 10

unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense…and with a sense of humor.

They make their Music by the Lake debut at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 20, closing out the 2016 summer season.

Originally formed more than a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon – with a massive fan base, more than 20 million views on YouTube and numerous national television appearances. They have achieved success with two holiday releases, including 2008’s “Holiday Spirits” and 2009’s “Christmas Cheers” and three additional albums, including the 2015 release of “The New Old Fashioned.”

Aug. 7 – Family event features Imagination Movers, one of the country’s most popular touring acts for families, brings its high-energy, interactive stage show to the Ferro Pavilion at 4 p.m. on Aug. 7. Best known from their Emmy Award-winning series on Disney Junior, the Movers – Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty – have captured audiences in 55 countries with catchy pop-influenced tunes for the younger generation, as well as parent and grandparents alike.

Music by the Lake features free parking and shuttle service for all events at the campus from Williams Bay High School at 500 W. Geneva St., in Williams Bay. The festival provides food options for patrons to enjoy before or during the show. Food booths are located on campus featuring snacks and sweet treats as well as bottled water and sodas. Other a la carte items such as sandwiches, salads, burgers and ice cream, are available at the College Inn, located west of the pavilion.

Lawn ticket holders may also bring their own food and drinks on campus, as well as small coolers and picnic gear.

By May, the greens at local golf courses really are green and the weather in the Southern Lakes area really is spring-like.

It’s the month when passion meets reality and golf becomes fun again.

That is reason enough for anyone who enjoys the game to book a tee time.

The area offers a plethora of golfing choices – from family friendly to championship challenging and everything in between.

Here’s a look at some of the courses the area has to offer:

Evergreen is a public golf course but also has a membership available for those who care to save money on green fees.

Regular rates Monday through Friday are $38 for 18 holes with a cart and $47.50 on weekends. Fees on Sundays after 1 p.m. are charged at a special rate of $24.75 for nine holes or $38 for 18 holes, which attracts many golfers ready for an afternoon round of golf either with a friend or a spouse. After 4 p.m. on Sundays children accompanied by an adult are allowed to play for free.

Discounted greens fees are in place before May 14 and after Sept. 25 Rogers also suggests that golfers check online for senior rates and random on line specials.

Evergreen is a picturesque course with gently rolling hills, waterways with bridges and sand traps. This par-three course maintains above average playing conditions.

“We are the best value in Walworth County and very player friendly,” Rogers contends.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons that many golf outings are held at Evergreen.

The course is capable of handling golf outings up to 210 participants and each

year the list of outings grows. Many charity events also use Evergreen as their home.

Because it is a country club, many amenities are available for golfers. A pro shop carries golf shirts, shoes and other supplies. The Bunker serves lunch seven days a week and is a great place to rehash the day’s round of golf.

The Evergreen pavilion used for many golf outings has recently been upgraded and will be partially enclosed to make it more of a three-seasons building. Four events will be held this summer, which will have themed music and food. People can come for the golf and stay for the fun. Tickets may be purchased at the Evergreen office.

Nippersink Country Club and Resort opened on the shores of Benedict Lake in Genoa City in 1922. The golf course was designed by U.S. Open winner James Foulis Jr. Foulis was born in St. Andrews, Scotland, so it was not surprising that he became a golfer. He won the Open in 1896 when it was held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.

The course is filled with mature oak trees, sand traps and ponds, which enhance

play on the course. While the course was designed for the average golfer it also provides a serious challenge when played from the championship tees. This 18-hole course is listed as a par-71.

The public course offers relatively reasonable rates. Daily rates are $28 for 18 holes with a cart or $20 without the cart.

Nine holes with a cart is $22 or 15 for those who prefer to walk. Weekend rates are $37 for 18 holes with cart and $25 without the cart. Rates for nine holes on the weekend are $25 with cart and $20 walking.

Opened in 2001, Hawk’s View is ranked in the top 25 new golf clubs by Golf Magazine. The complex consists of 36 holes and all the amenities including a pro shop, lessons and a bar and grill for before or after refreshments.

Como Crossings, one of the two courses at Hawk’s View, is best known for its dramatic changes in elevation. Two of the par-3 holes drop 100 feet from the tee to the green.

Greens fees Monday through Thursday for 18 holes with a cart are $75 while the regular rate for nine holes with a cart is $45.

There are lower rates for early or late tee off times. Friday through Sunday, the 18-hole with cart fee is $85 while nine holes with a cart is $50. A season pass may be purchased for $1,990.

Barn Hollow, the second course at Hawk’s View, is a par-3 course and is considered both family friendly and affordable.

Yardage ranges from 67 yards to 222 making it great for beginners, juniors, and seniors.

Green fees Monday through Thursday are $20 for 18 holes and $15 for nine holes. Even lower rates are available for early birds and twilight players. On weekends 18 holes cost $25 and nine holes $20. Three-wheel walking carts may be rented for $6 for18 holes and $3 for nine holes.

Winding history

A plaque placed in Library Park in Lake Geneva gives a short history of the trail that today is known as the Shore Path. It reads “The 26-mile lakeside trail along the shore of Geneva Lake was used by several Indian cultures from 2500 BC and continuing up to 1836 AD. Chief Big Foot’s Potawatomi tribe walked the trail between their villages at present Fontana, Williams Bay, and one at Lake Geneva located in this park. Later the trail became the workmen’s path from Lake Geneva to summer estates of wealthy Chicago families.”

It was after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that the rich and famous families of the big city made their way to the Geneva Lake area to begin building the elegant estates that they described as summer cottages but were large and elegant homes just as they owned in Chicago. Today many of these original estates can be seen as one walks along the Shore Path.

Fortunately the path was preserved by early settlers who deemed that “20 feet leading to the shoreline be preserved as public domain.” Each property owner was and still is required to maintain the path through their property, which has made the trail unique. Each property owner has provided a different manner of creating and maintaining the path.

At times some property owners were not pleased with the path running through their property and would try to discourage those using it by making their section of the trail very narrow and overgrown.

While some owners are opposed to the path, most embrace it. In 1970 the thenowners of Stone Manor were sued by the Serving You For Over 50 Years

owners. Staying on the path and not venturing onto the lawns, piers, or boathouses is expected as is using public access points to enter the path. Dogs are allowed on the path but must be kept on a leash at all times.

The surface of the path is as varied as the high-end estate homes along it. With surfaces that include cement, bricks, wood, stepping stones, and gravel spread over diverse terrain – some even, others hilly or twisting – walking can be treacherous especially when wet.

Walkers are advised to wear comfortable shoes with good tread to keep from sliding. Some areas of the path are very narrow and must be traveled single file. Other areas are close

to the edge of the shoreline and must be travelled with care to prevent an unexpected swim.

The path is narrow and not meant for any vehicles with wheels. Bicycles, scooters, skates, or strollers are not appropriate on the path. Some areas are too narrow to accommodate them and other areas are impassable for wheeled vehicles. The easiest part of the walk is the section of trail that begins at the Lake Geneva Library and extends in either direction for about a mile.

This is the best place to walk with young children or those who may have some mobility concerns.

For many, walking the entire path in one swoop is beyond their ability since it would require about 8 to 10 hours of walking

the trip each week, by the end of the summer you may be ready to tackle it all in one day.

While spring is a beautiful time to walk the path with everything just beginning to turn green and flowers starting to bloom, the path will have a different look in summer when flowers are in full bloom. Fall with its myriad of colors as the trees turn red, orange, brown and yellow brings a different glow to the lakefront. Walking the path in winter would certainly be a different look with it covered with snow but it would be treacherous in some areas.

While walking along the shore path and admiring the beautiful estates built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, remember the Potawatomi Indians who fished, hunted and also walked this trail until the 1800s and the many Indian tribes who used the trail from as long ago as 2500 BC. Remember the famous families who made Geneva Lake their summer homes, such as the Wrigleys and the Maytags, and all the early residents who went to great lengths to build on the lakeshore.

The shore path has survived through all these centuries and we are the latest of those who are able to enjoy its beauty and it is now our job to preserve it for generations to come.

Roma’s delves deep into the Italian cookbook

Twenty-three years ago Mark Galluzzo opened a small pizza restaurant in East Troy. “It wasn’t long before customers were asking me to cook other things for them,” Galluzzo said.

So the restaurant changed from just a pizzeria to a small Italian restaurant. Then 17 years ago Mark made the move and opened a much larger restaurant on Highway ES in East Troy.

The new restaurant focused on sit down Italian dinners. The menu is quite extensive from simple spaghetti and meatballs to high-end Italian specialties.

“We make all our sauces from scratch with only the finest highquality ingredients to give our finished foods the taste of home-cooked Italian specialties as one would find in an Italian home,” Galluzzo said.

The décor is decidedly Italian. Originally the main dining room had the look of the city of Rome. After several years it was time for an update and the look changed from city to the open country feel of the Amalfi Coast. That coastline is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy

Galluzzo has brought in the flavor of the coast with a hand-painted mural on the wall that makes people feel as if they are on one of the bluffs looking down into the bay.

The mural was painted by three students and their instructor from the Art Institute of Milwaukee. They finished the project in a week.

Adding to the warmth of the restaurant is the two-sided fireplace, which separates the dining room from the lounge and bar area.

In early spring, fall and winter, customers sit near the fireplace for the warmth and the ambiance of the fire.

A family recipe Galluzzo, who can be found in the kitchen each day overseeing the food preparation, learned to cook from his mother and grandmother.

“We are an Italian family and they were always involved in creating Italian specialties and I learned from them the importance of using the best ingredients to produce the best tasting dishes.”

This advice has followed through in Galluzzo’s work today. Everything used in the restaurant is made from fresh ingredients.

Steaks are all hand cut, fresh, and nothing but certified Angus beef is used.

The beef is the highest quality available and is the top 8 percent of all beef sold. In addition to the steaks, hamburgers, ribs and seafood are other favorites that complement the typical Italian offerings.

Spaghetti and meatballs, and lasagna are the two most popular Italian dishes served in the restaurant. Some of Galluzzo’s customers have been coming for dinner since it opened and many of the local customers eat at the restaurant one to two times a week.

“It is not unusual for customers to order the same thing each time as they find something they really enjoy.”

longtime customers to order something outside their comfort zone, to try different items, one of which may become their new favorite. All meals include unlimited soup, salad and ice cream, so no one ever leaves hungry.

Sunday morning is a special time at Roma’s. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. a brunch is served that guarantees you will be well fed. The traditional scrambled eggs, choice of breakfast meats, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and fresh fruit are served with juice, coffee, or milk.

ike fresh produce that pops up in the bright spring sunshine, area farmers markets bloom each May and June throughout the area.

The markets offer a variety of products, but none so sought after as the fresh produce from local farms, grown within hours, sometimes minutes, from the table.

Area residents suddenly have the opportunity to purchase fruits and vegetables grown locally, some from certified organic farms.

Pasture-fed and organic meats are also available at some markets, along with raw honey. Herbs and flowers round out the overwhelming selection, along with homemade soap, teas, nuts, wild rice, eggs, specialty coffee, crackers, sauces, maple syrup, kettle corn, mushrooms, sausage, and cheese.

Bright-colored canopies blossom on town squares, in shopping center parking lots, and in scenic parks along rivers and lakes. The season typically runs May through October, although opening and closing dates vary by location.

According to market devotees, food from the surrounding area is fresher and therefore tastes better. There’s no comparison between a tomato picked green and trucked hundreds of miles to one picked ripe and bursting with the

flavor of the land.

Vegetables raised on certified organic farms are grown without pesticides. Farm-cured meats seldom have added preservatives like nitrites and nitrates. Buying from area farmers keeps jobs local and the growers retain more of the profits because fewer middlemen are involved. They raise a greater variety of plants and animals, and therefore offer more diversity to patrons.

These days, many small food producers have espoused growing methods reducing their environmental impact as much as possible.

Some involved in area farmers markets represent operations that have been in business since 1860. Others are relatively new and want to share excellent or unusual food items.

Some of those items may include heirloom tomatoes.

Many shoppers have heard of “Big Boy” and “Beefsteak” varieties, popular in grocery stores and for backyard vegetable plots for many years. At farmers markets, however, tomatoes include multicolored heritage varieties and boast new flavors. The flesh offers a tighter texture with fewer seeds and juice, and the flavor is sweeter. A slice of co-jack cheese topped by a slab of heirloom tomato and baby lettuce or spinach on an onion bun is a fabulous summer lunch item.

Chocolate emerges as election year frontrunner Burlington is ready to celebrate its 30th ChocolateFest As Burlington’s ChocolateFest enters its 30th year, organizers can look back with nostalgia at how the annual event, held Memorial Day weekend, has evolved.

There was a time when festival patrons had one question on their minds – “Where’s the chocolate?”

Now, whenever organizers hear the question, they point emphatically to the Chocolate Experience tent rising prominently from the festival grounds on the north side of the city’s downtown.

This year’s festival – with its election year theme: Vote for Chocolate – runs May 27 through 30.

The Chocolate Experience tent – which is air-conditioned to guard against messy melts on hot days – is home to all things chocolate: from eating and carving contests to cooking demonstrations and a fashion show featuring clothing made from Nestle’ candy wrappers. It also houses a variety of vendors selling a plethora of chocolate confections.

For those who like to sample the treats, the festival offers an $8 Taster Ticket that can be redeemed for 12 chocolate samples inside the tent.

And everyone passing through the tent has a chance to walk away with a complimentary, fresh-baked Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie.

This year, the festival’s chocolate cooking contest takes on a new angle with teams of area high school students competing for top honors.

The High School Culinary Challenge under the direction of Chef David Ross and Chef Alex Newman features teams competing for monetary prizes that will benefit their school’s ProStart programs.

ProStart is a national program that introduces students to careers in the restaurant and food service industries.

Four teams will compete on Friday evening, May 27, to reach the finals scheduled for Sunday, May 29.

As usual there will be plenty of fun for kids with the Burlington Rotary Carnival featuring North American Midway Entertainment, which is the largest – and many consider the best – traveling outdoor amusement park in the country.

The carnival will again offer a Mega Pass, which includes gate admission and unlimited rides during the full run of the festival.

The Mega Pass has a value of more than $200, but is sold for $75 until May 25 at Fox River State Bank and Richter’s Marketplace.

The carnival also offers ride band tickets, which include unlimited rides during certain times of the festival. The ride band tickets cost $30 on the grounds, $25 in advance (May 2 through 25).

Ride band times are: • Thursday, May 26, 5 p.m. to close.

• Friday, May 27, 4 p.m. to close.

• Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, 10 a.m. to close.

• Monday, May 30 (noon-close) A new ride band ticket is needed for each day of the festival.

Perhaps the best part of ChocolateFest, according to organizers, is that all this fun generates money for community service.

The festival is a major fundraiser for many of the area’s nonprofit organizations that provide the volunteer workforce for the festival. In recent years ChocolateFest generates nearly $100,000 annually for these groups, who, in turn, pour the money back into a variety of community programs and services.

Since it’s inception, the festival has generated more than $2 million for these charitable organizations.

lack Point Estate celebrates the return of spring and warmer temperatures with two new events in May – Remarkable Women of Geneva Lake and A Steeple Tour of Lake Geneva.

Remarkable Women of Geneva Lake will be presented May 8 by local historian Jill Westberg. This cruise and estate tour will focus on many of the women who have lived along the shore of Geneva Lake.

The event includes a first-floor tour of Black Point with an emphasis on the matrons that managed the estate for more than 100 years.

“Each year we try to offer something memorable for Mother’s Day. Finger sandwiches and tea service will be provided on the return cruise to downtown Lake Geneva making this a really wonderful day spent with mom,” Black Point Director Dave Desimone said.

A Steeple Tour of Lake Geneva will be offered May 21. This program is an extension of the organization’s popular downtown Lake Geneva walking tours.

Participants will walk through the history and architecture of four of Lake Geneva’s historic downtown churches.

“We’ve all walked past these beautiful buildings, (and) now is the chance to experience their beauty from the inside – the stained glass windows, the carved wood, the pipe organs, the bells” Desimone said.

n 1836 Daniel Rork made a claim to land on which much of the early settlement was built. In 1837 Moses Smith was appointed postmaster of the settlement, then called Foxville. The name was changed to Burlington on July 15, 1839. After completion of the dam, sawmill and grain mill, the first bridge to span the Fox River was built. Since then the population has grown from two, to four, to today over 10,500 people.

Symphony to close out season The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra will present the final concert of its connections season on Saturday, May 14.

The program will include works of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Verdi, and Mozart.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Calvary Community Church, N2620 Harris Road in Williams Bay. Tickets are $12 for adults, free for students K–12, and can be purchased at LakeGenevaOrchestra.org or at the door.

“This concert is extremely melody-rich,” said LGSO Music Director David Anderson. “The audience will have no shortage of tunes to hum on the way home.”

Past LGSO performances have included soloists from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and that musical connection continues as LGSO welcomes CSO violinist Rong-Yan Tang and violist Li-Kuo Chang in a performance of Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante.”

“The appearance of Tang and Chang is an opportunity for concertgoers to hear world-class soloists at a local venue for a modest price,” LGSO violist Duncan Pledger said.

The program will also feature Verdi’s famous Triumphal March and Ballet from “Aïda,” Liszt’s tone poem “Les Preludes,” and Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise.”

Written in 1779, the Sinfonia Concertante is a crossover musical form between a symphony and a concerto. The soloists take on a duo role, often playing a prominent line, but also becoming part of the larger group.

Chang was appointed principal violist of the CSO by Sir Georg Solti 1988. He has appeared as soloist with many orchestras, including the CSO, and has collaborated in chamber music performances with Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, and Pinchas Zukerman.

Before joining the CSO Tang was most recently Associate Concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. She has appeared as a soloist in China, Hong Kong, and France, and with several orchestras in the U.S. As the first violinist of the Fry Street Quartet, her performances included appearances in the Carnegie Hall Rising Stars series.
