Lofi Fridays started as a way to promote new genres and support upcoming local artists and expand the scope of live music in Lake Geneva. You can expect to hear

The hosts, Sunny Daze and DJ Illya, have created a platform for local musicians, producers and DJs to share their craft with the community. Illusion & Magic Tristan Crist finds a home in Lake Geneva

ristan Crist Magic Theatre has drawn rave reviews from TripAdvisor as Lake Geneva’s top attraction and show.

Numerous people on TripAdvisor describe the show as fun and entertaining, with one person stating they were “blown away” by the illusions and tricks Crist performed.

Crist, a magician and illusionist, also earned “Master Illusionist of the Year” in 2021 by the International Magicians Society.

Last summer, International Magicians Society founder Tony Hassini, who presents the award annually, said Crist brings a personable demeanor to people attending his shows.

“Tristan Crist’s charming personality wins the audience from the moment he steps on the stage,” Hassini said in a news release.

Crist, in the same release, said the prestigious award was an honor and he felt humbled by the recognition from his peers.

“It has been my lifelong dream to own and perform in my own theater and I have been blessed to be able to successfully accomplish that here in Lake Geneva,” Crist said. “As an illusionist, I present large-scale magic effects that are normally seen on the large stages of Las Vegas.”

As for the theater, the modern 175-seat venue presents large illusion shows for tourists and locals year-round, even during the frigid winter months.

Crist, who grew up in the Milwaukee area, said the theater promises to deliver an

experience unlike any other.

“When you come to the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre, you are going to experience magic up-close and personal like you never have before,” he said. “The theatre is intimate and designed in a way that there are no bad seats in the house.”

Crist said his signature show features illusions with larger props such as making a helicopter appear, showgirls appearing out of thin air and a vanishing motorcycle act.

But the magician is always looking for new tricks – or illusions – and said he works to incorporate each feature into his show.

“I am always working on something new for the show so that is where my focus is.

Once it gets in the show, I am searching for the next new thing to start working on,” he said. “A few top favorites over the years are making a helicopter appear and a Harley Davidson motorcycle vanish.”

Crist said his shows are ideal for families, but he has seen adults marvel at his tricks and illusions.

“Adults have that child-like sense of wonder again when they see something that they can’t explain,” Crist said.

“The magic is designed to fool adults, but children certainly enjoy the visual aspect of it as well.”

Decades of experience Crist began his foray into the world of magic and illusions as a youngster growing up in Milwaukee.

He explained that his grandfather showed him a card trick and he became intrigued.

“From there, I received a magic kit as a present, was inspired by a magic show in my hometown of Milwaukee and the rest is history,” he said.

Crist spent his younger days performing for birthday parties and scouting events before finding opportunities in theaters.

In 2005, he was hired to perform at Circus World in Baraboo, where he presented shows for 10 years.

But Crist was looking to branch out and decided to open his own theater.

Initially, he explored various locations in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota before selecting Lake Geneva.

“I was looking for a tourist town that didn’t have a lot of evening entertainment options,” he said.

Crist experienced instant success upon opening his theater at 100 N. Edwards Boulevard.

“Within six months, we were named the No. 1 ‘thing to do’ on TripAdvisor…even beating out the lake,” he recalled.

Crist admits performing magic as a career is unique but he drew support from his family.

He said his family, however, believed he would eventually find a more orthodox profession at some point.

“My parents were supportive of me exploring the performing arts, although I think they also expected me to get a ‘real job’ someday,” he said. “Obviously, with the success of the magic theater, I think they realized it is possible to have a good career in the arts.”

“It’s been a wonderful career and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Crist added, who has been in the trade for 25 years.

While he does not have any regrets, Crist acknowledged he has encountered some challenges, especially amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

For several months in 2020, Crist, like other business owners, faced safety mandates and needed to meet recommendations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Like any profession there are always challenges,” he said. “The pandemic brought unique challenges to running an indoor entertainment facility with the various mandates and recommendations that were implemented.”

Expanded options Crist isn’t the only entertainer making appearances at his theater, he said, as Tristan Crist Magic Theater also features guest performers.

“We currently have Brett Daniels, who MARCH 2022

performs a second completely different show. He focuses on close-up magic and sleight-of-hand,” Crist said. “We project everything on a big screen so you can see all the details. He also makes parrots and doves appear! It’s a really fun show that is different from ours.”

Daniels, a master magician, has starred in numerous network television specials on NBC, ABC and CBS as well as being featured on many international television programs.

Daniels began making appearances on select dates in December and has four shows scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturdays in February. His show lasts about 70 minutes without an intermission.

Crist said he also plans on having more diverse options beginning in late spring and early summer.

Those options, according to Crist, should appeal to people of all ages.

“Keep an eye on our schedule because in addition to our big illusion show – and the Brett Daniels close-up show – we will also be bringing in a mentalism show that is geared toward adults on date night, and a juggling variety show that will be geared more toward families with kids,” Crist said.

Snocross series returns to Grand Geneva Annual event promises high-flying snowmobile racing Grand Geneva Resort and Spa will again host the top snowmobile racers in the nation March 18-20 for the AMSOIL Championship Snocross National Series.

The track on Grand Geneva’s Mountain Top ski hill allows for both indoor and outdoor viewing of up close, high-flying snowmobile action.

Races start on Friday morning, March 18, and the official opening ceremony is at 7 p.m. Saturday racing starts at 8 a.m. with pro races from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday events start at 7 a.m. and the final pro races run from 12 to 3:30 p.m.

Advance ticket prices are $25 for Friday, Saturday or Sunday. A weekend pass is $45

in advance. Tickets are available online at snocross.com Snocross, according to sanctioning body International Series of Champions, is the most exciting, fan-friendly form of snowmobile racing.

It combines the big-air jumps and hotly contested action of motocross with the crisp winter environment.

In her estate plan for the farm, she included a monetary gift to renovate the barn so that it could be used for the educational classes she believed were important to educate people on the need to protect the land. Thus, the Seno Center was created.

Meanwhile Dr. Shirley Peterson who owned a vacation property about three miles from the Seno Center was of a like mind. She wanted to preserve her woodlands and wetlands, which she named Drumlen Farm, and encourage environmental education. She too donated her 83-acre farm to the foundation along with generous funds that were turned into an endowment to support environmental programming.

Protecting 1,200 acres In 2014 the Seno Foundation and the Kenosha Racine Land Trust merged and today as Seno K/RLT Conservancy the group protect more than 1,200 acres of land within Racine and Kenosha Counties.

“Some of the land is owned by the conservancy and other parcels are protected by conservation easements. The conservation easements protect the land in perpetuity from development while ownership is maintained by the individual,” Santiago said. “The conservancy offers the owners advice on care with guidance to protect the land.”

The Seno K/RLT Conservancy offers a variety of educational programs for both children and adults. Some of these programs are offered as community outreach programs with the Kenosha Parks Alliance. Many are held in Southport Park or other Kenosha and Racine parks, allowing local children to learn about nature while remaining in their own neighborhoods.

Many schools attend field trips held at Seno K/RLT Conservancy and the children sparkle in the natural learning environment. Their eyes widen as they discover bugs and “critters” up close. They enjoy the wonder of butterflies and nature at its best. Programs teach them many things about nature that those who spend their time in the cities never learn.

“One of our programs focuses on the five senses and is geared to children from 4 to 6 years of age. Science based programs, such as our Land of Ice and Fire program, for ages 11 to 14 years, looks at geology and glacial formation,” said Santiago.

“Art in Nature for children 4-12 years can be a community outreach or as a field trip. The children focus on observation skills as they create an outdoor art project.”

Maple sugaring season Last year the Seno K/RLT Conservancy hosted a new program on maple sugaring. It was open to children and adults to teach the traditions of the annual spring ritual. Many children, and some adults are not aware that true maple syrup actually comes from the sap of the maple tree.

This year the same program will be presented on March 5 and again is open to children and adults – a perfect family outing.

The program will focus on the traditional process of making maple syrup, a process that has been a part of Wisconsin’s history for centuries. The process itself goes back to the history of the Native Americans who lived in this area long before the European immigrants arrived.

Participants in the program will learn how to identify a maple tree, the first step in learning to tap a tree.

“They will also be taught when it is time to tap the tree. It is the time when there are still freezing nights and warmer days to allow the sap to flow when tapped,” Santiago said.

Estate sale sets state record

DRIEHAUS MANSION SELLS FOR A REPORTED $36 MILLION SLN STAFF

The Driehaus Estate of Lake Geneva, known for its fabulous themed parties in recent decades, was sold in January – establishing a state record sale price for a single-family home.

The 40-acre property featuring a 14,145-square foot home with 12 bedrooms sold for $36 million, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Chicago billionaire J. Christopher Reyes and his wife Anne purchased the home, according to the Tribune, from the estate of the late Richard Driehaus, who died in March 2021 at 78.

Reyes is co-chairman of Rosemontbased beer and food distributor Reyes Holdings, which is one of the largest private companies in Chicago with 2020 revenue of about $28 billion, according to the Tribune.

News of the sale first broke Jan. 17 when agent David Curry of Geneva Lakefront Realty announced it on his blog.

“While I remember all of my lakefront sales, this one is going to hold a special place in my memory for obvious reasons,” he wrote.

The site chosen for this vacation home was an undulating lakefront parcel on the north shore of Geneva Lake, where Snake Road dipped and weaved across the hilly countryside.

The Olmsted Brothers provided the landscaping design, replete with ponds and gardens, meandering pathways and resting perches, all leading visitors through the dense native woods to the level shoreline, according to the listing. The Harris Family named their sprawling Georgian estate Wadsworth Hall after their distant relative Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and went on to enjoy the next 10 summers at their lakeside retreat.

Later ownership changed the estate name to The Stenning, before Driehaus purchased the estate in 1998 and renamed it Glanworth Gardens in honor of his mother’s hometown in Ireland.

Driehaus, motivated by a desire to restore and respect the architectural and natural pedigree of the estate, set about a multi-year renovation that touched nearly every piece of the property, according to the listing.

At times, more than 100 craftsmen were working on site at any given time, all with the singular goal of returning this property to a condition that reflected its importance, according to the listing. While the initial renovation was completed in just over two years, Driehaus continued improving the lake house throughout his ownership.

Green Early spring tips to get you landscape in shape During the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors.

For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams.

Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season.

• One of the first steps is to apply a preemergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

• While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is

in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”); otherwise, you may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day.

• Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to the soil in your particular area to enrich it.

• Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in.

• Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other

gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed.

• Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves.

• Check if the front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining.

Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days.

• Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement any existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive.

Before homeowners know it, winter is gone and it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

Home market hit new high in 2021 Sales defied rising prices and tight inventories

Strong sales in December propelled the Wisconsin’s existing home market to a new record high for annual sales in 2021, according to the Wisconsin Realtor’s Association.

December home sales rose 0.4% over sales in December 2020, and this pushed total closings for 2021 to 89,328, which is 0.7% higher than the previous record established in 2020.

“Setting a new record for sales is remarkable,” said Brad Lois, chairman of the board for the WRA. “That we have been able to do this even as inventories tightened throughout 2021 is a true testament to the persistence of buyers and the hard work of Realtors to find buying opportunities, even in a strong seller’s market.”

The eight-county Southeast Wisconsin area led the way with sales increasing 4.4% in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Locally, Racine County led the way with 3,337 homes sold in 2021, an increase of 7.6% over 2020. Kenosha County experienced a 4.2% increase with 2,619 sales and Walworth County sales increased 4.1% with 2,055 homes sold.

Median prices for 2021 were up the most in Walworth County (10.2%) to $285,501, followed by Kenosha County (9.9%) to $233,000 and Racine County (5%) to $210,000.

“We sold more than twice as many homes as came on the market in December, which is why home prices increased by just over 10% since December of last year,” said Michael Theo, president and CEO of the WRA. “However, there have been signs that home price appreciation has begun to moderate in recent months, which is welcome news for buyers looking to buy in 2022.”

Here are other market observations noted by the WRA in its monthly report issued this week: • The December median price was $236,850, which is 10.2% higher than the price 12 months earlier. On an annual basis, the median price for all of 2021 was $240,000, which is $20,000, or 9.1%, higher than the 2020 median price.

• Half of the regions saw annual home sales increase, with closings up 4.4% in the Southeast region, sales up 2.2% in the Central region and closed sales up 0.7% • CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Tips for home buyers during a seller’s market A combination of factors, including low interest rates and a pandemic-driven decision by many city dwellers to look for houses in the suburbs, has created a housing boom for much of the past two years.

That boom has created an undeniable seller’s market in real estate.

Just what is a seller’s market? The financial resource Investopedia defines it as a marketplace in which there are fewer goods for sale than there are interested buyers, giving sellers the ability to dictate prices. Since mid-2020, there has been an extremely low inventory of homes for sale but a very high interest among purchasing parties.

to a surge in competition from buyers, including bidding wars on homes and allcash offers to entice sellers.

Median prices for single family homes in Wisconsin was up more than 10% in 2021, according to the Wisconsin Realtors Association.

Jeffrey Mezger, a 40-year veteran of the real estate industry and CEO of KB Home, says it’s the best seller’s housing market he’s seen in his career.

The remaining regions had lower sales in 2021 compared to 2020, with the Northeast region falling 1%, the West slipping 3.8%, and the rural North region dropping 6%.

The strength of the heavily urbanized Southeast region, especially Milwaukee County, led to record sales in 2021.

• The state inventory continued to fall. New listings dropped 15.4%, which pushed total listings to just 15,037 in December, a 12.9% slide from 12 months earlier.

• Months of inventory dropped to just two months of supply statewide, indicating a very strong seller’s market.

Especially tight were the metropolitan markets, which had just 1.8 months of supply in December. Reviewing inventory by price range in 2021, the lowest inventory was seen in homes priced between $125,000 and $349,999, with just 1.7 months of available supply. This is well below the six- month benchmark that indicates a balanced market.

• Mortgage rates have started to inch up, with the

30-year fixed-rate mortgage increasing from the record low of 2.68% in December 2020 to 3.10% in December 2021. With median prices rising 10.2% over that same 12-month period and median family income projected to be up only 0.8%, affordability slid 12.6% between December 2020 and December 2021. Still, a creditworthy buyer with median family income, a 20% down payment and a 30-year fixedrate mortgage financing the remaining balance was qualified to buy 195% of the medianpriced home in December.

“The annual inflation rate increased to 7% in December, the highest rate since 1982,” said Dave Clark, a Marquette University professor and WRA consultant. “The Fed has signaled it will start raising short-term interest rates this year to reduce inflationary pressures. Although mortgage rates increased in 2021 and will likely continue to rise in 2022, keeping inflationary expectations in check will reduce the likelihood of significant spikes in mortgage rates this year.”

• Get preapproval or have your funds ready. Speed is the way to go if a buyer is interested in a property and wants to make an offer. Real estate professionals say buyers should be “offer ready,” which means having a mortgage preapproval letter or proof of funds for a down payment ready to go. Failure to have funds in check can slow down the process or compel sellers to reject an offer.

• Work with a real estate agent. These are complicated times and it pays for buyers to have a professional working in their corner. A real estate agent uses his or her knowledge to make a timely offer and

negotiate on the buyer’s behalf. He or she also will provide insight into specific neighborhoods, amenities and school districts.

• Eliminate certain contingencies from the equation. Contingencies are factors that must be met before a sale can go through, according to the relocation site Moving. com. Asking for extended closing periods or certain home repairs are some additional contingencies that can make buyers less attractive to sellers.

• Make it personal. Buyers can offer a personalized note with the offer that may connect with the seller emotionally and set one them apart from others who have made similar offers.

Paranormal investigators study local lore

esidents in the East Troy/ Elkhorn area (and beyond), have for years, told tales of strange howls in the night, rustling sounds when no one is seen, mists coming and going on a bright and sunny day, white orbs in the sky, strange footprints, eyes shining up in the trees and deer carcasses from roadkill disappearing.

Add to that the reported sightings of a “beast,” covered with long hair and walking on two legs, and you have the local legend of the Beast of Bray Road.

The beast is described as a humanoid wolf-like creature about 7-feet tall. It was given the name Beast of Bray Road because of the many sightings of it in that area, going back as far as 1936. The sightings grew more prevalent in the 1970s and 1980s.

During that time, there was so much interest that a local writer, Linda Godfrey, began to research the sightings and combined them in a book titled “The Bray Road Beast.” A movie was also produced about the sightings in 2005.

The beast has been seen more frequently again in recent years.

On the night of Oct. 3, 2021, the Bucks County Paranormal Investigation team from Pennsylvania – led by Eric Mintel – was in Elkhorn for a program about the Beast of Bray Road. Afterwards they were invited to the farm of Lee Hampel, near Elkhorn, where a lot of unusual activity has been noted in his fields, including some possible sightings of the beast.

“We decided to take a trip to the area to learn more about the Beast of Bray Road, so the group attended the conference,” Mintel said. “Afterwards we were invited

to Lee Hampel’s farm where there has been reported a lot of paranormal activity. We thought we would hear a story about the activities but certainly didn’t expect to have the experience we had.”

Hampel said he purchased the farm in 2007 to grow hay for his animals unaware of the farm’s history. By 2011, neighbors told him stories about the beast and that it was frequently seen on Bray Road eating road kill.

They also shared information about strange things happening in the area such as their tractors would quit running for no reason and then just as quickly restart. Some reported hearing unnatural howling sounds and seeing what they thought might be the beast.

Hampel began to look for the beast, baiting areas along the field originally with roadkill deer. He placed motion sensitive cameras in the area to see what would eat the deer.

“I was surprised to return the next day and find the deer gone and that the cameras had not recorded anything in the area,’ Hampel said. “There was no sign of anyone walking on the grass or dragging the deer carcasses.”

Over time Hampel said he saw a variety of paranormal activity including orbs and bright lights, and a creature with large

orange eyes that jumped 15 feet into the air. Additionally, he says a strange mist has surrounded him on a bright and sunny day and he has found footprints with five toes and an additional two pads on the foot portion, giving seven pads in all, which is something he has not seen before.

“Dominic Sattele, the medium in our group, Ellen Collins, Beast of Bray Road researcher, along with Ellen’s son, Scott, and I headed out to the field,” Mintel said. “Dominic looked up and was shocked to see a solid white orb over the field. It dipped to a 45-degree angle and disappeared.”

They had baited the area with steak bones, left over from their dinner, hoping to attract the beast and it seemed they had done so.

“As we gathered on the property, we began to hear a strange howl in the distance. Then another, which sounded closer, and all seemed to be behind us, encircling us. Then another howl, very guttural, and frightening, as if a man was screaming,” Mintel said.

In the field, they also noticed eyes shining high up in the trees, he added.

Mintel said they began to wonder whether there was more than one beast and

whether the field was a portal for the beasts to enter this world.

The paranormal investigators took a number of photos and video and are analyzing what they saw. They will prepare some videos using material collected for a conference.

Mintel and his Buck’s County Paranormal Group will return to the area April 28 to present their findings from the visit to Hampel’s farm at a town meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Matheson Library, 101 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn.

Admission is free. They will also be conducting another follow-up investigation at the Hampel farm.

The public is invited to visit Hampel on his farm on April 29 when he presents his story and films of the happenings along with a wagon ride on the property.

Tickets are $10 and need to be purchased in advance.

Donna Fink will present the second Beast of Bray Road Conference at the Lutherdale Camp on April 30. The daylong event will include nine speakers with paranormal research, including Mintel.

Grand Craft Boats docks in Genoa City Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers was among the people to welcome Grand Craft Boats, a manufacturer of custom-built mahogany boats, to Genoa City.

The governor announced last year that Grand Craft would be moving from Holland, Michigan to Wisconsin.

“Grand Craft Boats joins a growing list of iconic, world-class brands that call Wisconsin home,” Evers said. “We have seen so many businesses like Grand Craft moving to our state in the last few years and it shows Wisconsin is headed in the right direction.”

For more than 40 years, Grand Craft has been designing and handcrafting luxury mahogany boats for celebrities, professional athletes, industry leaders, and wooden-boat aficionados alike.

Grand Craft Boats uses advanced manufacturing processes, contemporary functionality, and technical innovation, according to company officials.

Previously, the company would produce a handful of boats a year, but now, according to Patrick Gallagher, Grand Craft’s President and CEO, that number will grow over time under his ownership at the Wisconsin facility.

The Gallaghers are expanding the production line with plans to produce up to 35 boats over the next three years.

The first Wisconsin-made boat was recently completed and has already been shipped to Florida.

The company is producing its next few boats in its leased 20,300 square foot facility located at 1021 Williams Rd., which serves as the company’s headquarters and houses its production operations. Grand

Craft expects to employ 20 workers in Genoa City within three years.

“Our past few months in Wisconsin have been fantastic and we’re proud of the growth and direction that Grand Craft is heading in for the future,” Patrick Gallagher said.

“We’re thrilled to have welcomed Gov. Evers to our facility … so he can witness first-hand the unparalleled hard work of our employees and we look forward to a long and successful manufacturing history in Wisconsin.”

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is supporting Grand Craft’s move to Wisconsin by authorizing up to $125,000 in performance-based state tax credits over the next three years. The actual amount of tax credits Grand Craft will receive depends on the number of jobs created and the capital invested in the project.

The Milwaukee 7 Regional Economic Development Partnership (M7) also assisted WEDC in bringing Grand Craft to Wisconsin.

“The bespoke boats produced by Grand Craft add to our region’s reputation for making technologically sophisticated products that are also beautiful,” said M7 Executive Director Jim Paetsch.

Most children dream of playing a musical instrument at some point in their lives. But a dream that is not fulfilled in childhood may continue into adulthood.

If it is the dream of the child in your home or the dream of the child still in you, it is time to visit Rock Central and make these dreams become reality.

Located on the east side of Lake Geneva, Rock Central is a vibrant and exciting music school for all ages that creates a warm learning environment.

It offers a unique method of learning that focuses not only on learning to play a specific musical instrument but encourages on-stage performance and provides the opportunity to do so for all students.

Rock Central offers classes on a variety of musical instruments and also offers vocal lessons. Their teachers do not just teach but are also professional musicians, who are active in the music scene. Some have their own bands while others have appeared with well-known performers.

A drummer at heart Jamo Van De Bogert is one such teacher.

He grew up in Walworth and is a graduate of Big Foot High School. He became interested in music at the age of 5, when he began drumming on any surface.

“By fifth grade I was in the school band and music became my life,” he said.

“I continued to play drums through high school and college and traveled with many musical groups.”

Among the musicians he has accompanied or with whom he has done production work are the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Ricky Martin and the group Phish.

He began teaching drum lessons after returning to the area in 2010, which led to the opening of a School of Rock Franchise in Williams Bay with friends Lisa and Dave Sharpe.

“We found that working as a franchise was not accomplishing our goals for the music studio. So, we closed the studio, formed a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and moved to Lake Geneva where we opened Rock Central,” said Van De Bogert, who in addition to teaching drums, serves as vice president of Rock Central’s governing board.

“We do not just teach music lessons but we also focus on performance. Every student has the opportunity to perform,” he added. “We provide opportunities for them to play in the community by performing at local festivals and at various music venues in the area.”

Music makes the place After visiting Rock Central there is no

With a performance stage visible as one enters the main room and a number of private lesson studios located throughout the venue, it offers a professional vibe.

Musical instruments adorn the stage and microphones are just waiting for someone to bring them to life.

“The school offers many genres of music but they are focused around rock and roll and other music from the past,” said Rickie Wetzel, manager of Rock Central. “We are a performance-based program. Each student receives one private lesson of 45 minutes each week and a second lesson of an hour and a half with their group working on musical pieces they will be playing for their show.”

Before she became manager for the studio, Wetzel was a student here.

“I sing professionally for my husband’s band, the Big Al Wetzel Band. I took some classes to improve my voice and later was

offered the job of manager of the studio,” shared Wetzel.

It has now become a family affair as her husband teaches a variety of instruments at Rock Central, along with writing music and playing professionally.

Performance is emphasized The classes offered begin with the 101 series for those between 5 and 10 years of age who have not had any musical training.

The next group is the 201 students who range from 11 to 15 years of age. The high school group is known as the Show Rockers. There is also an adult group for those over 19 years of age.

The separate House Band consists of 4 or 5 of the best musicians in the school. They always have a set list and are available to perform for community events.

Performance is considered an important part of the student’s education in music.

While some students may be very reticent about performing in public, they become more comfortable as they play together with the other students. Their weekly sessions help them overcome any shyness before they play for the public. Their quarterly performances before an audience adds to their stage presence as they build confidence in both their musical ability and their stage confidence.

“The earlier one gets into music the better,” said Alex Vino, bass teacher at Rock Central. “Young children – even younger than 3 years of age – love to dance and follow the rhythm of the music and sing along. Rhythm is so natural to the child. We do also offer classes in rhythm and movement to very young children. And you are never too old to start classes.”

Variety is celebrated Alex Vina is another locally grown musician. He spent his youth here in Lake Geneva and started playing the upright bass at the age of 8. During his school years he was a member of the Badger High School Jazz Band. After spending some time in Florida, he returned home to Lake Geneva to continue his musical career. He currently appears with his band Bodhicitta, known for playing a variety of music including rock, jazz fusion, and bluegrass.

To keep students interested, the school offers a variety of music to introduce the students to different genres so they may find the music that they love to play.

Recently students worked on the music from the video game Guitar Hero. That game, according to Vino, had a lot of good music that the kids enjoyed playing.

“The purpose is to keep the students motivated. By playing together it motivates them to continue to work on their music,” said Vina. “We also encourage them by allowing them to choose some of the set material.”

Students have performed a wide range of styles from the work of the Beatles to classical pieces. The 101 group has been working on the Women of Rock including Joan Jett and Blondie while the 201 group has been learning music of the Rolling Stones.

Each quarter a show is held to share the talent of the students. They are often taken to local venues to play or participate in local festivals. The have participated in events like Rock the Lake and students have been the opening act for known musical groups including Kansas and the Guess Who.

instrument but they learn more about the history of music. By performing they also learn skills such as setting up and taking down the microphones and sound systems and the importance of performing a sound check before each performance.

“We encourage students with challenges such as ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome or other conditions to speak with us first before ruling music out,” added Wetzel.

“Sometimes music helps them to overcome their challenges and gives them confidence as they develop social skills with their group.”

A free trial lesson where the teacher works with the student to evaluate how best to pursue that student’s musical education is available for any student before signing up for classes.

Rock Central is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for children and adults through accessible music education and experiences. They offer limited scholarships for students who may not have the means to pay for classes. Rock Central raises money 30

to help families and kids participate.

Donations to support Rock Central come from a variety of businesses and from individuals. The school does some fundraising such as the monthly meat raffle held at Endzone Sports Bar and Grill in Delavan. Check the website calendar for dates.

Rock Central strives to make sure every kid with a desire or passion for music is given the opportunity to pursue it.
