It’s Tradition

Local restaurants embrace Lenten fish fry by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

If it is Friday night and families are heading out to eat in Wisconsin, it is most likely they are in search of a fish fry. Whether they are heading to a traditional Wisconsin supper club, a casual restaurant, or the local tavern, there is sure to be a fish fry on the menu and the majority of customers will make the local tradition their choice for dinner. The history of eating fish on Fridays can be traced back to the early days of Christianity, when Roman Catholics were forbidden to eat red meat on Friday as sacrifice for Christ’s death on that day. Many of these Catholics, who lived in areas where fish were plentiful, replaced their red meat with fish on this day. As many of the European Catholics – particularly those from Germany and Poland – began to migrate to the United States, they brought their tradition of fish on Friday with them. Finding their way to

Wisconsin in the 1800s, these immigrants took advantage of the large number of fish available in the lakes and rivers of the state. It did not take long for the Friday fish dinner to become a standard not only with Catholics but also with other residents of the area. The European immigrants tended to fry most of their dishes so it was not surprising that the fish they ate on Friday was also fried, giving the sometimes-bland fish a special flavor. In the early 1900s, the Friday fish fry began to appear on many restaurant menus. Bars and taverns added the fish fry to their menus especially during prohibition to bring customers in. The low-cost dinner was a perfect fit during prohibition and the depression. In some taverns, a small glass of beer could be found next to their dinner, in spite of prohibition.

Enduring tradition The Friday fish fry remains a tradition in Wisconsin even though Catholics are no longer required to abstain from meat on all Fridays. However, the church still asks Catholics to abstain from red meat on Fridays during the six weeks of Lent. Churches, veterans groups and other organizations often hold fish fries on Fridays during Lent as fundraisers. The traditional fish fry in Wisconsin consists of fish, often beer battered or coated with seasoned flour before frying. The fish traditionally used are cod, perch, bluegill, haddock, walleye or, in some areas, smelt. The fish is accompanied with German-style potato pancakes or French fries, coleslaw, and often rye bread along with tartar sauce for the fish. With the trend to eat healthy, many restaurants have added baked or broiled fish to their fish fry menus. In Northern Wisconsin it is the fish boil, brought by Scandinavians who settled in that area, that remains popular, although the traditional fish fry is prevalent there as well. The fish of choice is whitefish boiled with potatoes. Some variations of the fish boil can be found in southern Wisconsin. Here’s a look at three area restaurants that make the fish fry a signature part of their Friday menus:

Waterfront Pub and Grill

408 Highway 50 • Delavan • 262-728-4700 The Waterfront Pub and Grill is a favorite gathering place for residents and visitors of both Lake Geneva and Delavan. Located on Highway 50 across from Delavan Lake, the restaurant is a place for visitors to gather not only for the food and beverages but also for beautiful sunsets that can be enjoyed from its upper deck. On Friday the crowd is most interested, however, in enjoying a

traditional Friday fish fry. “We offer a variety of choices for guests to enjoy as our Friday fish fry,” said Crystal Androfka, manager of Waterfront Pub and Grill. “We do not just serve a fried fish option but have several excellent choices for guests to enjoy.” Those who prefer the traditional batter-fried fish, will not be disappointed with Waterfront’s traditional beer-battered cod made with New Glarus Spotted Cow beer. Rich and crispy, the fish has a broad appeal. The fish fry is served with a choice of the traditional potato pancakes, French, fries, or house-made potato chips. The Coleslaw is a rich and creamy addition to the meal, along with applesauce. “While the battered and fried fish is the traditional fish fry, many people these days are more health conscious and prefer a baked fish. For them the baked cod, which comes with the same traditional sides as the fried, may be their choice, said Androfka. “Whichever way one choses to have their fish prepared, it will be fresh and tasty.” The fish fry is available for $13 for a threepiece serving or $14 for the four-piece dinner. For the really hungry, additional filets can be added for $1.50 each. While the fish fry is traditionally served on Friday, The Waterfront also serves it on Wednesday during lent. The fish fry is served beginning at noon so those who prefer to have it for lunch can be accommodated. “We also offer another special treat which we call the fish boil,” shared Androfka. “It is our best kept secret, a unique preparation with a rich and creamy sauce that is not offered elsewhere.” The fish boil is also cod, which is boiled in a creamy butter sauce and served with carrots and boiled potatoes. For a true Wisconsin fish fry, start with some Wisconsin cheese curds, or a bowl of the homemade clam chowder and of course pair it with some Wisconsin craft beer. Diners have the option to eat in house or take out to enjoy at home.

Mars Resort

4098 S. Shore Drive • Lake Geneva 262-245-5689 Since 1923, visitors have enjoyed spending time on the shores of Lake Como. Although Mars Resort has gone through a variety of owners and menus, this super club is still a favorite place for friends to meet and enjoy fine food and a spectacular view. Many arrive in time to view the sunset or during the day to watch the small planes landing or taking off on the water. As the crowds gather there is no doubt the majority of the visitors are here to enjoy the fish fry. “We serve the fish fry on both Wednesdays and Fridays all year round. Unlike many restaurants, we do have the fish fry available both at lunch and at dinner,” said Connie Morton, manager of Mars Resort. “Our fish is all hand-breaded in house.” Like many of the fish fries of the area cod is

the primary fish used. It is a light and flakey fish making it palatable for most. The Mars Resort offers cod prepared two different ways. The traditional fried cod is offered in the regular size portion of three pieces for $13.95. For the really hearty appetite, it is available in the large size consisting of four pieces of fish for $14.95. For those watching their weight or those who just prefer a lighter option the cod can be ordered baked. The regular size portion consists of 12 ounces of cod and the large size a full 16 ounces. If you are undecided about which way you prefer your fish choose to have half the order fried and the other half baked. While side dishes at a fish fry seem to be somewhat standard, each restaurant often has one unique side. For Mars that choice is in the potatoes. They offer the option of potato pancakes or homemade corn fritters. Looking for something different? Mars offers fried lake perch and fried bluegill on alternate weeks for a little change of pace. The perch or bluegill are served with the same choices of sides as the cod and are available for $16.95. According to the staff at Mars, walleye is another favorite that is offered only on Friday. The restaurant serves fried wildcaught walleye for $18.95. Mars Resort invites diners to enjoy a Signature Old Fashioned cocktail before dinner or have some Wisconsin beer with the fish fry while relaxing with friends and enjoying the view of Lake Como.

Daddy Maxwell ’s Diner and Café

150 Elkhorn Road • Williams Bay 262-245-5757 Daddy Maxwell’s has been a gathering place since it first opened as a custard stand in 1949 and then grew the menu to include burgers and chicken. Janette Maxwell purchased the site in 1987 renaming it Daddy Maxwell’s and specializing in breakfasts and lunches. “We changed the menu and became well known in the area for our breakfast specialties and lunches,” Janette Maxwell said. “We are open weekends from 6 a.m. and weekdays starting at 8 a.m. We serve breakfast and lunch daily with special breakfasts except for on Fridays when we remain open until 8 p.m. for our fish fry.” It is not possible to miss the restaurant due to its unique appearance. It appears from the street as an igloo that one would expect to see in the arctic. The round shape is not only outside but the main dining room is round giving the feeling of being inside an igloo. The room is always decorated for the season, with Christmas decorations remaining up for people to enjoy longer than the traditional season. “For our fish fry we serve haddock. It

can be ordered deep fried or grilled. Our haddock is dusted with a light seasoned flour, before being deep fried in peanut oil,” said Maxwell. In addition to the fried haddock, the restaurant also offers a grilled lemon pepper haddock. Each of the dishes is available in a two-piece platter for $11.25 or a three-piece serving for $12.50. Each platter comes with a choice of freshly grated potato pancakes or the traditional French fries. Coleslaw is also made in house and served with the dinners. well known for our coconut shrimp.” The fish fry is offered on Wednesday for lunch and on Friday for lunch and dinner. Friday is the only evening they are open. According to Maxwell, they begin serving the fish fry about 10:30 a.m. and continue through the day on Friday. Daddy Maxwell’s also offers fresh pies and cakes that are baked in-house by Janette. The pies are made with fresh fruits, such as blueberries, and in season the cherry pie is baked with fresh Door County cherries. A variety of pies are offered so there is sure to be one that you enjoy. If you are too full from dinner, order a piece of pie to go and enjoy it later in the evening with a cup of coffee. Daddy Maxwell’s does not take credit cards so be sure to bring a check or cash.

according to Beers, because homes are selling so quickly and there are not a lot of homes for sale. “The market is good so they can get top dollar for their home right now. If they do decide to sell, one of the things they should do to make it more attractive to buyers is all of the little fix-up things ahead of time,” he said. The other side of the equation to sell now, Beers said, is once the home sells, the sellers will then need to go out and find a house, not an easy task with the limited homes available currently. He said potential sellers – who will quickly become potential buyers once their home sells – might want to scout the market ahead of time, Beers said. “It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get into some homes and see them in person or do some serious looking online, just because homes are selling so quickly right now,” Beer said. He said the low interest rates likely will rise but when that will happen is hard to predict. “Right now is a good time with interest rates being under 3% so people can get more value for their dollar. I would predict in the coming year interest rates will go up so they can buy more now with the current market,” Beers said.

Keys to a comfortable home Transition from winter to spring is a good time to service heating/ cooling system by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Living in the Upper Midwest, one of the most important items in our homes – one that helps to keep our family comfortable and safe – is our heating and air conditioning system. When we have had a very cold and snowy season such as this past winter, and the possibility of a very hot summer coming up, being certain that the heating and air conditioning units in the home are in top working condition is paramount. Thielmann Group now with six locations – including Burlington and Waterford – has been keeping heating systems running at their peak since 1929 when John Thielmann founded the family business. At the time Thielmann Heating serviced both boilers and oil heating furnaces. As his sons aged, they joined the company and in 1969 his grandson Paul took over the with air conditioning systems, which were becoming more prevalent in private homes, as part of their service. “The company was sold to Brad Smith in 2005,” said Ryan Rosenthal, who is in charge of sales and development at Thielmann Group. “The group continued to grow with Burlington Heating and Air conditioning being added to the company in 2011 and the addition of Roth Heating (Waterford) in 2020. With the addition of these two companies, Thielmann became the Thielmann Group.” Their company now includes Thielmann Heating & Cooling with locations in New Berlin, Menomonee Falls and Hartford; Burlington Heating and Air Conditioning in Burlington, and Roth Heating with offices in Oak Creek and Waterford to service residents in the southeastern Wisconsin region. Thielmann Group sells and services topgrade furnaces and air conditioning units, including Lennox, Daikson, and Carrier in forced air systems and a variety of boilers

including Buderus, Lennox, NTI and others, for hot water heating systems.

Getting top performance

According to Rosenthal, maintenance is important in getting the top performance out of your equipment. Annual service visits are required by most manufacturers to keep the warranty valid. “The average homeowner can expect his furnace and air conditioner to last between 14 and 20 years, depending on the amount of wear and tear on the equipment and assuming yearly maintenance,” Rosenthal said. For many years, most homeowners have followed the tradition of having the furnace cleaned before the start of the heating season and the air conditioning unit cleaned SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

before the start of summer. While this is an acceptable maintenance schedule, it is not the only way to schedule your cleanings. “Contrary to this belief, both the heating and air conditioning systems may be scheduled for maintenance to be done at the same time. It is often good for customers to have both systems inspected and cleaned during a quieter time of the year, rather than trying to get your air conditioner cleaned in the middle of a heat wave, or your furnace cleaned during a below-zero time when there are more calls for emergency repairs,” said Rosenthal. Having service performed regularly on your equipment, makes it possible for the technician to pick up on small problems while they are just that, small problems that may require a minor repair rather than letting it progress to a major problem.

Your best indoor air

To be certain your furnace or air conditioner is working at its best, a clean filter that fits the system is needed. The filters come in a variety of styles and sizes. Installing the correct size for your furnace and replacing it as recommended will create a better airflow in the home. “The schedule for changing the filter depends on the filter itself. A 1-inch filter usually needs to be changed every 30 days, while a 4-inch filter may only need to be changed every six months,” said Rosenthal But if there are pets in the house that means there are more particles in the air and the filter needs changing more often. Many people are under the misconception that the filter only needs to be changed when the furnace is on. “The cleaner the filter is, whether it is for the heating or air conditioning use, the less stress is put on the equipment. With more airflow through the system, the house will cool faster and cleaner.” While in the winter, humidification is important, as we move into summer the opposite is true. There is a need to dehumidify the air. If you have a whole-house humidifier it is time to turn it off when you turn off the heat. In the winter you want to raise the humidity in your home to 35% to 45%. In the summer you will be trying to get the excess humidity out of your home. Depending on the size and style of your home, you may want to invest in a wholehouse dehumidifier to keep that humidity level down in the summer. Many people have a de-humidifier in the basement to prevent the humidity from building up and causing mildew to form but a whole house dehumidifier will protect the air in the entire house. “There are a variety of whole-house dehumidifiers and each one needs to meet the needs of your home. They come in a variety of sizes and models and need to be fitted for your home. The square footage and style of your home will be considered when fitting your home for the correct model,” Rosenthal said. Today as many are concerned about breathing fresh clean air, many homeowners are opting to install fresh air ventilation systems in their homes. Outdoor air is the cleanest air to breathe and the fresh air ventilators will guide that air into the air return of your HVAC equipment. A fresh air ventilating system can be added to your HVAC system at any time and will add to your air quality summer and winter.

When replacement is needed

A question frequently asked by customers is whether it is necessary to replace both your heating and air conditioning systems at the same time as it seems sometimes only one is truly in need of replacing.

It is not necessarily required that they are changed at the same time, but often that is the best choice. If both components are older, it is a matter of time before the other one gives out. The newer systems are manufactured to work together and so performance will most likely be better. With the entire system being replaced, the warranties will also be on the same timeline. “Replacing both at once may actually save money in the long term as there are frequently better prices for the entire system as opposed to separate components, and companies often offer rebates,” Rosenthal said. There was a time when thermostats were simple. You set the temperature and the house heated or cooled to that number. Today’s smart thermostats offer many additional features and can help homeowners adjust their home’s temperature even when they are not present and will alert them if there are problems.

Duct cleaning

One of the maintenance needs that many homeowners do not think about is the need for duct cleaning. The heating and air conditioning ducts throughout the home become filled with dirt and dust over the years. Contractors recommend that ducts be cleaned about every seven years. If yours have not been cleaned recently, it is time to consider having it done as the summer air conditioning season will soon be upon us. When hiring someone to do duct cleaning be sure they are qualified and have the correct types of equipment for a thorough job. Whether you use the Thielmann Heating, Burlington Heating and Air Conditioning or the Roth Heating locations, they will recommend what will work best for your home. While many people are wary of having service technicians in their homes due to the pandemic, Burlington Heating and Air and Roth Heating in Waterford as well as all the other members of the Thielmann group, follow all the COVID safety guidelines, including wearing masks, booties and gloves while in your home.

Seasonal transition

As we move toward the warmer season its time for homeowners to prepare for the change. It’s a good time to have your air conditioning system serviced, replace your filters and discuss with your HVAC representative about the need for duct cleaning. You may also want to obtain information on smart thermostats to provide a more efficient way to run your cooling system, which may lower your electric costs. Homeowners should also pay attention to the air conditioning condenser outside their home. “Many residents completely cover their outdoor condenser for the winter,” said

from top: New boilers and furnaces are much more compact than the older models and take up less room in the basement or utility space; While you may feel your home is perfectly clean, it is always a shock for homeowners to see the amount of dust and debris that accumulates in air ducts over time. Rosenthal. “We do not recommend that the condenser be completely covered in the winter as small animals will find their way in and nest there and may chew the wiring causing damage to the condenser. When the sides are open to the elements there is less attraction to the critters. Take the time now to open it up and remove any debris that has accumulated over the winter.” For HVAC service, repairs or new installations, the Thielmann Group is ready to serve. A laughing matter

Lake Geneva therapist melds the joys of laughter with the discipline of yoga

by Dave Fidlin

CORRESPONDENT

The Lake Geneva Public recently hosted an introduction to laughter yoga, which combines the traditional aspects of yoga with the stress-relieving benefits of laughter. The program was held virtually with participants joining via computer from their own homes. FILE PHOTO Spirit of Geneva Lakes

n a cold, dark winter evening in late January, laughter was emanating from participants’ Zoom screens in Lake Geneva. At times, it was a light tenor; at others, it was hearty and raucous. The Lake Geneva Public Library, which has continued offering an assortment of enrichment classes and activities virtually, hosted an introductory session on laughter yoga Jan. 28. More than a half-dozen participants took part in the Zoom activity to learn more about the growing phenomenon. Rachel Strehlow, head of adult services, said a session on laughter yoga was a logical fit for the library’s program offerings on the heels of a challenging year. “Who doesn’t need laughter right now?” Strehlow said. A local expert was on hand to guide participants on the ins and outs of laughter yoga — and the growing body of evidence pointing to its bountiful benefits. “I just think laughter is my drug of choice,” said Emily Hummel, of Lake Geneva, who is a licensed marriage and family therapist. “My goal in a session is to have you laughing for at least 15 or 20 minutes.”

A way to connect with other people

Hummel, who for the past 13 years has worked in the outpatient behavioral health division of Northwestern Medicine in Sycamore, Ill., said she had been studying the benefits of laughter for a number of years. In 2015, she received an official certification in laughter yoga. While laughter has long been believed to have a number of physical and emotional benefits, Hummel said some of those pluses might not be as obvious. “Laughter is such a great way to connect with other people,” Hummel said, pointing to one of the less cited benefits. “The more and more I’ve

studied it, I’ve learned about the many benefits of laughter.” While laughter as an expression of a human emotion has been around since the dawn of time, the concept of laughter yoga is still relatively new. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor in Mumbai, India, is credited with founding the exercise in 1995 after researching the benefits of laughter from a mental and physical health perspective. Kataria first introduced laughter yoga in a public square in his community. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Forced laughter offers similar benefits

positive responses within each person’s body, Hummel said, including the requisite need for deeper, fuller breaths. Emphasis on breathing technique is where some of the yoga aspect of the practice comes into play. Hummel said laughter can be a simple, logical antidote to a stressful day. “Very often, when we get anxious, we take shallow breaths,” Hummel said. “That alone can make us even more anxious.”

Perfect for a pandemic

While Hummel gained her mastery of

laughter yoga more than a half-decade ago, the practice has gained a new purpose at a time when so much of life — particularly as an adult — can be stressful because of the uncharted territory of navigating through a pandemic and its ancillary affects. Regardless of the venue — from therapy sessions to corporate retreats — Hummel said the carefree nature of a laughter yoga session can be a throwback experience for some participants. “Very often, as adults, I think we get so serious,” Hummel said. “But laughter and playfulness just seem to go together as a team.”

At its core, laughter yoga is a series of simulated exercises involving forced laughter, rather than the traditional involuntary response to something funny. From his research, Kataria concluded the human body does not distinguish from genuine and pretend laughter, meaning the same physiological benefits were reported. In her class, Hummel initiated a number of exercises. One, for instance, entailed passing a pretend phone from one Zoom participant to the next and laughing heartily. The activity awakened a number of right: While most people think of the practice of yoga as a quiet activity with a goal of relaxation, family therapist Emily Hummel of Lake Geneva says there are many benefits to combining yoga with laughter. below: Hummel, a certified laughter yoga instructor, strives to incorporate 15 to 20 minutes of laughter in a typical session. Some of the laughter is spontaneous, but much of it is forced, which offers many of the same benefits, according to the founder of the practice. FILE PHOTOS Spirit of Geneva Lakes

Patience&Precision LOCAL ARTIST MAKES METALLIC IMPRESSION

by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

hroughout Noel Winn’s artistic career, the Avenue Artworks owner has generated multiple pieces of art, ranging from large bronze statues to miniature pewter castings and precious metal castings. Winn, born and raised in Delavan, said he drew inspiration from his late father, Skip, who had a strong community reputation as a sculptor. “He was already involved with art and was a talented sculptor and printmaker,” said Winn, who recalled watching his father create art in multiple media. “He was a professional artist, that was his job, so I was raised with sculpting clay and have always been exposed to art work. I have seen him make artwork and I hoped I could do that some day at that skill level.” The older Winn, who owned Avenue Artworks until 1996, when he passed away, also showed Noel an artist can excel. According to Noel, his father had a partnership with Harley Davidson, which bought Skip’s motorcycle statues every year. “He proved that it could work and that you could make it as an artist,” he said.

Artistic journey

Winn graduated from Delavan-Darien High School in 2000 and decided to spend the next couple years exploring North America, including Canada and Mexico. But he opted to return home. “I wanted to come back to the Midwest. I liked the Delavan area, my connections were here, my friends were here. So I came back here, got married and had some kids.” Winn then worked for a company in Milwaukee as a sculptor making belt buckles and ornaments. The Milwaukee-based company, he said, had a connection with Harley Davidson. “They were connected with Harley Davidson and I made stuff for their gift shop,” he said. “I did that for eight years working there and then I worked freelance.” In the meantime, he worked on several projects, including one lasting eight years. The eight-year project involved crafting intricate chess pieces under a microscope. The chess pieces took considerable patience and precision, Winn said. “I worked on that for eight years,” he said. “It has all kinds of detail and probably the most I have ever done.” But, according to Winn, while the finished work showed precise detail, it took more than just talent.

“Talent is important and half of that is patience, too. That is the secret ingredient to actually making cool pieces. If you aren’t patient with it, you have nothing.” Defining a clear vision, especially before starting a project, is another instrument to Winn’s success. “You just picture it in your mind and you keep going,” he said. “When I see something that I want to make in my head, I can make it exactly how I want it.”

Reviving tradition

Avenue Artworks, originally on Walworth Avenue in Delavan, closed its doors in 1996 when Skip Winn passed away. “His studio stuff got put into storage, all of his equipment and tools,” Noel Winn said. Then, after looking through the items, Winn brought them in and used some of the tools for his eventual business. Winn, however, didn’t initially envision bringing back the Avenue Artworks name. “I have always tried to think of a name for my business. What can I call it?” Winn asked himself. “Then it just dawned on me, why don’t I just call it Avenue Artworks because that is what his business was?” In 2008, Winn reopened the doors of Avenue Artworks, but on High Street in Delavan. • SEE PATIENCE ON PAGE 30

ALWAYS EXPECT A

Believe Project founder shares story, provides hope and inspiration by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

or a struggling grandmother… $100 bought school supplies for her orphaned granddaughter… For a suddenly homeless family, $100 meant nights in comfortable beds… For recently unemployed parents, $100 put food on the table… For these and countless others in need, $100 is a reason to believe. The ability to have that type of impact is how the Believe Project got its start, according to the organization’s website. It was founded by Carolyn Gable as an anonymous way to brighten the day of a stranger in need… by giving kindness and inspiration in the form of a small envelope containing encouraging quotes along with a $100 bill. During the recent holiday season, patrons of the Walworth County Food and Diaper Bank were the unexpecting recipients of such

a gift. “I was given a box that Carolyn Gable left with Karen, the owner of Cornerstone in Lake Geneva. In it was 31 envelopes and each one contained $100 and a note,” pantry owner Susan Hughes said. Hughes said the message included with the money was simple, yet impactful: “Let the love continue with you, a simple smile to a stranger will do. Pay it forward.” “It’s a way to really make a difference and it’s about more than just food,” Hughes said, adding that the pantry received an amazing amount of support overall in 2020. The Believe Project envelopes were distributed at the pantry on Christmas Eve, which Hughes described as “the perfect” time and place for it.

Working her way up

Gable, a waitress turned CEO, was once a struggling single mom working as a waitress in Chicago to make ends meet. After years of scraping by, she landed a job at a trucking company and worked her way up until she was running her own multimillion-dollar business. She shares the inspiration behind the Believe Project in a video on the website. The video opens with a bell ringing. Words taped to the bell say: Ring the bell to make miracles happen. The video then shows a sign carved into a tree that says: You can trust me. Love, God. It then shows inspiring words

along the fence near a property along the Geneva Lake shore path formerly owned by Gable. “I wanted the path by my property to be very special. I started out as a waitress. I was a single mom, no education. But I had core beliefs – love, education and service,” Gable says in the video. Eventually she started her own company, New Age Transportation, and through the good fortune of that company, Gable said, they’ve been able to do many wonderful things. She explained that they started the Expect A Miracle Foundation and helped many people including thousands of children of single parents and soldiers in Iraq.

‘Miracles can happen’ The Believe Project came about when Gable was at her granddaughter’s school. “There was a woman in front of me, as we were waiting in line, who was telling this complete stranger that her daughter had died and she now had her granddaughter to raise. Meanwhile, here’s my granddaughter coming up, ‘Grandma, I want this, I want that,’ so I said, ‘Alright, just get three things,’” Gable said. The other woman’s granddaughter came up and told her grandma she had found what she needed. • SEE MIRACLE ON PAGE 30

“I thought it would make him proud to carry on the art business,” Winn said. Since then, Winn has specialized in traditional, realistic artwork, jewelry, moldbuilding, bronze sculpting and precious metal casting. “Sculpting has been a passion of mine my entire life,” Winn’s company Facebook page states. “I am proud to have my own business which I can create custom pieces of art for the public.”

Public exposure

While Winn conducts the bulk of his business online using Etsy, a global online marketplace offering unique items, he is involved in some community and business partnerships. Community partnerships include selling his stock items at the weekly Lake Geneva Farmer’s Market. The Delavan Downtown Business Association commissioned Winn to design a Christmas ornament in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, Winn’s designs commemorated the 76th Anniversary of D-Day and the 101st Anniversary of the 19th amendment allowing women to vote. Winn started the 2020 Christmas ornament project last August, creating multiple sketches, clay renderings and prototypes before making molds and casting them in pewter, according to the Visit Delavan blog.

“In total, I’d say this piece took roughly 35 hours to create start to finish,” Winn said. Winn developed different designs before the Delavan Downtown Business Association decided on Christmas tree below a banner reading “Delavan.” “I want to do that more and I like those kind of projects because it is such a good position for an artist,” said Winn. As for business partnerships, Winn recently created a custom tapper for Elkhornbased Duesterbeck’s Brewing Company, which used the rooster emblem for its Roosterbeck Ale.

Favoring realism

Winn told the Visit Delavan blog he has always had an affinity for realism and working with faces. “I’ve really made it all. Bottle openers, jewelry, chess sets, and even sinks, Winn said. “I really enjoy realism and working with faces.” Winn, meanwhile, told this newspaper his realistic artwork typically avoids whimsical or abstract appearance. “If someone says ‘I want a bust of my grandfather,’ I am going to make it and it is going to really look like him,” he said. “It will be realistic in that sense and not abstract at all.” For more information, visit Avenue Artworks on Facebook or at AvenueArtworks.com.

“I wanted so badly to say, ‘Let me buy that for you. Let me do it.’ And I didn’t have the courage,” Gable said. “It hit me that we needed to start this project and we called it the Believe Project. We put $100 in an envelope with all these motivational cards. So, when you’re in a situation where you really want to help but don’t have the courage, you could certainly give them the envelope.” In the video, a man’s voice can then be heard as he approaches a woman. “There is a very nice woman who would like you to have this, OK? It’s a hundred dollars,” he says. The woman who was given the envelope thanks the man. She then goes on to explain that she’s been sleeping outside and the money will provide a way for her to be able to eat and also stay at the shelter. Gable talks in the video about the woman’s reaction. “How could you not have an experience like that and not say, ‘We have to give out more.’ Because I believe the more you give, the more you’re going to get,” Gable said. Gable went on to explain that when she bought the home in Lake Geneva and put inspirational messages on the fence, she had no idea 18,000 people were going to show up and leave a piece of themselves on the path. “Ring that bell. Miracles do happen.”
