Traveling through the Geneva Lakes area it is difficult not notice the many fences, both utilitarian and decorative, surrounding homes.
Many of these fences are the work of Aronson Fence Company, which has offered a variety of options to customers for the last 25 years.
Roger Aronson, owner and founder of the company, has seen his business grow exponentially during that period. He has added a variety of fence styles over the years to fit the styles of the times.
“We build fences in the northern Illinois and Southeastern Wisconsin area, roughly in an area from Kenosha through the Lake Geneva area to Delavan and then south to Elgin in Illinois and continuing east to the communities up to the edge of Lake Michigan,” Aronson said.
He opened his business first in Island Lake, Illinois, but soon expanded to build a huge indoor and outdoor showroom in Wauconda, Illinois, where prospective customers can visit to see the variety of styles and materials that can be used to construct their fence.
Located near Highway 12 not far from the Wisconsin border, the facility makes it convenient for Wisconsin customers to visit and see the materials up close.
Aronson offers both decorative and ornamental fences and functional, more traditional styles of fences. Knowing exactly what you need for your property will make picking the style and material to provide that perfect fence easy. Aronson’s estimators will work with you every step of the way to create the perfect look for your needs. They will take into account the size and style of the fence while working within your budget.
When asked why people build fences Aronson replied with a smile in his voice, “To keep children and dogs in.”
While this is not the only reason to build a fence, it is an important one. With a fenced in yard both the children

and the family dogs can enjoy being outside, playing in the yard and enjoying the sunshine on beautiful summer days without worrying about having them wander off.
The choice is yours
The fences provided by Aronson Fence Company are all top quality – whether they are made of cedar, ornamental metal or vinyl.
Wood picket fences are one of the most popular types of fence. All of

the cedar fences from Aronson Fence Company are made to order, not preordered from another company. The cedar is then purchased from a mill in upper Michigan.
“We provide boards that are ¾-inch thick. The industry standard is just ½-inch thick giving us a sturdier board to build your fence,” said Aronson. “The most popular height for most fences is 4 feet but privacy fences are often built up to 6 feet tall.”
In addition to using top-grade wood, they also use stainless steel nails, which don’t bleed into the wood and have excellent holding power for a strong fence that will survive the Midwest winters. All fences are designed and built on site by Aronson’s quality crews.
While many think of a picket fence as one with pointed pickets, they can also be built with an arch top, a Flat top or a scallop top. Each picket fence is unique and can give a different look just by changing the spacing, height or width of the pickets.

Privacy fences are usually more dense, with pickets closer together so that no one can see in or out. These are often used in back yards. The privacy fence can be built so it is attractive regardless of which side of the fence you are on.
The split rail fence reminds many of the open fields of horse farms. These fences where the rails are applied between the posts horizontally rather than vertically as they are in the picket fences are perfect for horses and for highlighting the landscape. With generous spacing between each board, an unobstructed view of the landscape is available, while still providing a safe barrier for horses.
How o choose
When choosing a fence there are a variety of items to consider. Cedar fences last about 12 to 18 years and they do require some maintenance. While they may be left without stain or paint to take on the silver-gray patina, others may prefer a stained or painted look.
Otherwise they may be sealed with a natural finish to preserve the wood’s natural color.
A popular choice for those looking for something that requires less maintenance are the ornamental fences made out of steel or aluminum. These high-end fences add a look of elegance to the property. There are a variety of styles and designs from plain, clean lines to fences with a very decorative flair. According to Aronson, these fences are maintenance free and come in a variety of colors – colors that do not require repainting.
While the wood fences are created by the Aronson team, the metal ornamental fences are made in a factory.
“One of the most popular uses of the ornamental fences is to use one around the swimming pool,” Aronson said. “A pool requires a fence to keep everyone safe. The ornamental fence allows a full view of those in the pool even when one is outside of the fence.”

Aronson also offers fencing made from vinyl. They are an authorized dealer for Bufftech Vinyl Fencing Systems and offer more than 30 styles of PVC fence designs. These fences will last many years and are maintenance free. They also come in a variety of colors.
If you want to give your fence a special look, the post of the vinyl fence can have a decorative cap added. There are a variety of styles and colors available to match your décor. Whether one chooses a stainless steel or an antique copper look, the fence post caps will add a special touch. For an added “wow” effect add eco-friendly solar LED lights to the tops of the posts.
“We install between 1,200 and 1,400 fences each year in the southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois area,” Aronson said. “With this many installations we have 10 well trained crews who install our fences and five estimators who will make in home visits to work with you to design your fence so it is just what you want.”
Aronson Fence Company can be reached by phone for information or to schedule an appointment at 262-248- 3390 in Wisconsin or 847-526-9300 at the showroom, 26356 W. Ivanhoe, Wauconda, Illinois. They are online at aronsonfence.com or on Facebook. The showroom is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For a decorative look, the traditional picket fence can be created in a variety of ways. This fence uses pickets of varying heights, with the front of the fence displaying the highest pickets and an arbor right inside the gate.

OPPOSITE: This cedar fence is 6 feet tall and offers good privacy for this back yard. The decorative gate adds a special look to the property.
