lease,” Jonathan Cross, owner of Jonathan’s on Brick Street, said. “I knew it was time to open my own restaurant and this was the perfect spot. I looked forward to turning it into a fine quality restaurant to be enjoyed by the residents of Delavan and visitors to the area.” Cross has worked in the food service business for more than 40 years, since he was 13 years old. While he has practiced his culinary craft at a variety of restaurants throughout the area, from here to Door County, this is his first solo attempt to open a new restaurant with a special atmosphere and fine food. The brick street

While the restaurant has the name of Jonathan’s on Brick Street it is actually on Walworth Avenue. The name Brick Street has been its unofficial title since the mid 1800s when the circus communities wintered in Delavan. The streets of Delavan were all composed of mud and the heavy circus wagons would sink into the mud as they travelled into the business district to purchase supplies. The section of Walworth Avenue through the main business district was paved with bricks to keep the circus wagons from sinking into the mud and splattering the mud into the businesses located along the way. The street became known as Brick Street because it was the only street in town that was paved with the bricks, a look that continues to this day. Following the brick theme, the restaurant is housed in

a historic brick building with brick interior walls. It is a building that was once slated for demolition, but has been preserved. Now the exposed brick walls provide an attractive interior for the restaurant. The building has been the home of a bank, a cheese shop and café and, for a short time, another restaurant prior to it becoming Jonathan’s on Brick Street.

Warm and welcoming

The interior has a warm and welcoming ambience. Two stone fireplaces are located in the main dining room. The décor is simple, natural wood floors, tables with blue tablecloths which tie in with the blue seats on the chairs and an eclectic collection of framed art on the walls. The artwork, which was added when Jonathan opened the restaurant, adds a bit of his personality to the space. “We strive to provide fine quality fresh food (that is) well prepared and we do this by starting with the freshest ingredients available,” said Cross, who is also the chef. “Our seafood is … flown in fresh three times a week to ensure the finest quality and freshness.” It is not surprising that there is a large selection of fish and seafood on the menu as Jonathan is known for unique and fabulously prepared fish. Cashewencrusted halibut is one of the most popular choices on the menu. The menu has a variety of choices and portion sizes, starting with smallplate selections, which work well for the smaller appetite or as an appetizer. For the seafood appetite, try the jumbo sea scallops consisting of three fresh day boat U10 scallops that have been pan seared, then served over a guava puree and accompanied by sugar snap peas. Or diners could opt for the blackened sashimi grade tuna, seared rare over four crispy wontons, served with wakami seaweed salad, and mango, papaya, and pineapple chutney. The wasabi aioli and Asian sesame glaze will add the right amount of spiciness to the dish. Many other choices including seafood stuffed mushrooms, Maryland crab cakes or prosciutto-wrapped jumbo gulf shrimp may tempt you.

Made to order

Want a meat selection? Try the blackened pork tenderloin medallions. Everything is made to order and from scratch including soups and salad dressings. Try the baked French onion soup in a crock or the ever-changing soup of the day. In addition to a side garden salad to complement your meal, Cross also offers four entrée salads. Whether your choice is the classic Caesar salad, the Asian

sesame seared ahi tuna salad, a more traditional cranberry chicken salad, or the Brick Street chopped salad, these mealsized salads will be a special treat and sure to satisfy. The Brick Street chopped salad includes items such as lox salmon, dried black currants and Israeli couscous along with the traditional items usually found in chopped salads. Many chefs who open their own restaurants often leave the cooking to other chefs while they concentrate on running of the restaurant. Not Jonathan Cross. He enjoys cooking so much that he handles the day to day management of the restaurant earlier in the day but when the kitchen opens, he is there sharing in the food preparation. “I enjoy cooking, so it is important that I continue to prepare my guests’ meals,” Cross said.

Steaks and specials

In addition to the large selection of fish found on the daily menu there are usually some additional specials listed on the menu board as you enter the restaurant. Not everyone comes for the fish and seafood. A specialty on the menu is Delavan’s own Pinn Oak Farms rack of SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

lamb. Three double-cut lamb chops are char grilled and served with fresh mint demi glaze sauce. A variety of steaks including rib eye, New York strip, and beef tenderloin are all certified Angus beef. All of the beef is cut in house leaving the diner with a perfect cut of meat that, when cooked to perfection, will make a dinner that will be heartily enjoyed. A variety of enhancers can be added such as Cajun blackening, ala Oscar with crabmeat and asparagus or sautéed mushrooms. “Even our fish are all cut and filleted in house,” said Cross. Each of the entrees is served with a choice of garlic-mashed potatoes, basilflavored baby red potatoes or garden saffron rice pilaf, along with fresh sautéed vegetables. A side salad or cup of soup may be added for a small charge. In addition to the locally sourced lamb and fine quality certified Angus beef, community-sourced produce is used whenever possible. Micro greens – those that are just sprouting – are used in many of the dishes or for garnishment.

a before-dinner cocktail is a great way to relax. The fully stocked bar offers a variety of drinks and a large selection of wines, most from the west coast and some European choices. The bar is also a place to enjoy your favorite game on TV. Wine may be purchased from the small retail wine shop located near the front door for your at-home pleasure. On Friday night the fish fry reigns. Not just one choice, but a variety of both traditional fried fish along with baked varieties. Beer-battered Icelandic cod or blue gill, fried walleye and fresh Great Lakes Whitefish almandine are also among the choices available. The fish fry is served with rye bread, cole slaw and a choice of homemade potato salad, potato pancakes or French fries. Check out the special fish fry and Old Fashioned combo for $20. Live jazz adds to the ambience on Friday and Saturday evenings. “We have had a wonderful welcome from the community,” said Cross. “We are already enjoying a repeat customer base and we welcome new customers.”

Getting your fill

When dining at Jonathan’s on Brick Street, one can expect a fine presentation and a delicious and affordable dinner. They structure the menu prices below big city steak and seafood levels, according to Cross. The indulgence continues with a full dessert menu. “All our desserts are created in house,” said Cross. “The triple chocolate flourless mousse cake is a favorite of many of our diners.” But this is not the only dessert to tempt the palate. Walter’s white chocolate banana bread pudding with a bourbon salted caramel glaze may be the dessert that is calling. And who can ever pass up a great crème brulee, which is offered in a variety of flavors. Key Lime Island Pie is another favorite with diners. “Our Key Lime Pie is served a bit different as it is baked in a large pan then cut into squares,” Cross said. But you aren’t finished with the dessert selections. Homemade cheesecakes, which change flavors weekly, may be enticing. Too full to even consider dessert but can’t pass up these great choices? Pick out your favorite dessert and you may need to take it home with you for later. Jonathan’s on Brick Street is at 116 Walworth St., Delavan. The telephone number is 262-725-7715 and the website is Jonathansonbrickstreet.com. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Reservations are recommended. The dining room is available for private lunchtime parties or business meetings for groups of 20 to 60 guests.

ED NADOLSKI Spirit of Geneva Lakes

Riviera Beach in Lake Geneva is among the largest and most popular in the area.

Sun& Sand

Local beaches offer a boatload of summer fun Although warm weather took its sweet time in getting here this year, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of sweltering days in the Geneva Lakes area come July and August. And for that, the area offers a natural remedy. With an abundance of lakes – and, accordingly, beaches – the Geneva Lakes area boasts a wealth of sun, sand and cooling breezes on summer days. Whether it’s the large popular beaches on Geneva Lake – Riviera or Fontana – or the more secluded stretches of sand found on Twin Lakes in Kenosha County or Browns Lake in Burlington, the choices are many. The decision is as simple as matching the summer day with your mood – Do I want to hang out with a hundred sun-drenched souls or do I want to hunker down with a book under the branches of an oak tree? Perhaps you’re looking for a lively game of volleyball or a playground for the kids. It’s all here and accessible with a drive of a few minutes. Here’s your guide to the area’s beaches:

Lake Geneva Located in downtown Lake Geneva at 211 Wrigley Drive, (262) 248-3673, Rivera Beach is a 600-foot-long sandy stretch that attracts both the local residents and tourists from the Chicago and northern Illinois area. On recent sunny day the beach was not nearly as crowded as it is on weekends, but it still had many visitors. Food is allowed and there are many restaurants in the immediate area. The pier out in the lake attracts swimmers who enjoy swimming out to it and jumping or diving in to the lake. Groups of teenagers were playing volleyball in the water without a net and seemed to be having a great time. A lifeguard is on duty from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the summer season. While it is one of the nicest beaches around, it is also the busiest. Tickets costing $8 for adults and $4 for children are purchased from a machine at the entrance to the park. attracts families. “I enjoy working here because everyone is so friendly. I meet so many people,” a lifeguard at the beach said during a recent visit. “There is a steady flow of visitors throughout the day.” Like all of the beaches glass and alcohol are not allowed. Burlington Fischer Park on Browns Lake in Burlington, 30326 Durand Avenue, (262) 763-8446, features a wide, sandy beach where children enjoy playing, and a grassy area where parents and grandparents can sit shaded by some of the large trees that make it a comfortable place for all. The park is well maintained. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day during the swimming season. Picnic tables encourage visitors to spend the day and enjoy a picnic lunch. There is a $2 per person fee during the swimming season. While this list is not a complete

list of all the beaches available in the area, it includes some of the best and most popular. A day in the sunshine filled with outdoor activity has the makings of lasting family memories.

Delavan

In the Town of Delavan, Community Park, 1220 South Shore Drive, (262) 740-2335, has a large playground, including a volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and picnic area but the swimming beach is small. The swimming area is delineated to keep swimmers from going out of the area because of underwater weeds. The beach offers free use of life jackets. Non-town residents are charged $25 for a seasonal pass while residents use the beach for free. Daily rates for visitors are also available.

families. According to the beach’s manager, the beach is popular because it has deep sand and a grassy knoll and is kept scrupulously clean. Food and beverages are allowed but no grills, glass, or alcohol. The water has two separate lines of buoys, one to mark the shallow end up to four-feet deep and the second section for the deeper water. Beach officials do not recommend going past the second line of buoys. Three or four lifeguards are on duty and one of the lifeguards is usually on the pier to better watch those in the deeper water. Guards are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Daily rates are $10 for those 12 and older and $5 for ages 6-11. Changing rooms are available.

Twin Lakes Twin Lakes, as its name implies, has two lakes – Lake Elizabeth and Lake Mary – with several beaches open to the public. Lance Park Beach along Main Street on Lake Mary in the Village of Twin Lakes is perhaps the most popular. The beach is small with very little sand, but it features a collar of green grass behind it. Several mothers with children were at the beach during a recent visit. No lifeguards are on duty so swimming is at your own risk. There is plenty of parking and no admission fee.

This group of girls enjoy fun in the sun as they play in the sand at Fontana Beach.

The beach at Lance Park in Twin Lakes has a relatively small strip of sand, but the large grassy areas provide a place to sit and watch children in the water.

Cigars andBeer PERFECT PAIRING:

As temperatures rise in the area, some people might want to venture outside and have cigar, but the lingering question remains. Where does one find a premium cigar? David Scott, owner of Smokin’ Brew in Elkhorn, has the answer and said he offers a better cigar compared to local gas stations. “I have some cigars that are packaged very, very nice,” he said. “They make great presents, but all of the cigars that I sell are quality, premium and hand rolled cigars.” “These cigars are not something you’d find at a gas station, it is a step up from our normal cigar purchase.” Scott, who also sells homebrewing equipment, stores each cigar in a walk-in humidor designed to keep his inventory fresh. The humidor, he said, maintains the humidity while keeping the cigars at room

temperature. “I have an automatic humidification system, it maintains the humidity in the humidor at all times,” he said. “I never have to worry about refilling the reservoir.” Scott said he typically sets his humidor between 68 to 72 degrees. As for what is inside the humidor, each cigar is hand rolled and comes from various parts of the United States and beyond, including Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Honduras. “Some of the cigars are actually made in America, so they are hand rolled in Miami, for instance, or there is a manufacturer in California that handles a lot of the cigars and they actually roll the tobacco.” Prices range from $3 to $20 per cigar. If a specific cigar is not in his store, he said he will look for ways to order it, but indicates some types are easier to find than others. Cigars, however, are just one facet of his

downtown Elkhorn establishment. Homebrewing Homebrewing, a hobby he picked up about 30 years ago, was the key component in the launch of his business. Scott, who previously worked for a large corporation, decided to open the establishment after learning more about homebrewing. He indicates brewing a batch of beer, or wine, is as simple as making soup. “One of my mottos here at the store, is if you can make soup, you can make beer,” he said. Typically, brewing a five-gallon batch from an extract takes about an hour, but requires weeks to ferment before becoming beer. “If you are going to do an extract batch, you can actually make the beer in probably an hour, then you probably have a half hour of cleanup time,” he said. “Then it takes up to four weeks to ferment, to actually become beer.” He recommends storing the beer in bottle for about two weeks following fermentation.

For new brewers, Scott said he suggests one of the numerous pre-made kits he sells. With numerous styles of beer, he said each kit comes with step-by-step instructions and all of the ingredients are premeasured. “Mostly for new people that want to get into brewing, there are a couple of different versions, if you will. You can do extract, which is very simple. There is also allgrain which involves more quantities of the grains to make beer,” he said. “I have equipment for the basic starting homebrewer and I have been personally home brewing for over 20 years. It works fine and it makes good beer.”

one instrument that often breaks, the hydrometer. “There is an instrument that we use to measure alcohol, it is called a hydrometer, those break quite frequently just because it is a fragile instrument,” he said. “They are only $5.99 to replace, it is not that big of a deal, everything else is pretty durable.” For anyone looking to give a gift, but unsure what to purchase, Scott has certificates available in any amount. He indicates his business is split 50/50 between cigar sales and homebrewing kits/ supplies. But, he reportedly sees an influx of customers seeking cigars when the weather It’s better bitter warms up. A map to the past MUSEUM EXHIBIT USES MAP COLLECTION TO PIECE TOGETHER LIFE ON THE LAKE by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes

A new exhibit has opened at the Geneva Lake Museum that will take visitors back in time as they view the history of the Lake Geneva area and Geneva Lake through a variety of maps, ranging from the early Native American Legend Map through the maps of the 1800s to the current maps of the region. According to Janet Ewing, museum administrator, the idea of a display of maps was discussed by the museum for some time but it was not expected to be a large permanent display, rather a smaller temporary display. All that changed thanks to Ed Weed, a Lake Geneva resident and collector of maps. At the opening of the exhibit, Ed Schwinn, President of the Geneva Lake Museum, told of visiting Ed Weed at his home to view his map collection. “I knew he collected maps but was surprised to see the vast number and quality of maps that he had collected,” Schwinn said. He requested that Weed loan some of his maps to the museum to place them on display. To Schwinn’s surprise, Weed not only agreed to have his maps on display but generously donated copies of his maps to the museum. After framing all the donated maps, the museum put them on display and now they form the heart of the exhibit. Thus the display went from a smaller Fishing was and is a favorite activity on the lake. Long before people had access to global positioning systems, maps were used to guide travelers on their journeys. Cartography, or map making, dates back as far as the cave paintings. Many of the early maps were hand drawn and depicted landmarks such as large stones, unusual trees, streams, mountains and other unique places on the terrain. Cartography has changed over the years with the development of the compass, telescope, sextant, and quadrant that allowed for more accurate maps to be produced. The story this exhibit tells is more than just a collection of maps. It is the story of the Geneva Lake area, from the early days when it was inhabited by Native Americans, who made their home along the shores while they fished and hunted for food. It continues as the white settlers made their way into the area, farming the rich soil and seeing the growth of small communities along the shore of Geneva Lake, such as the towns of Geneva (now known as Lake Geneva), Williams Bay, and Fontana. As many of the rich and famous of Chicago discovered Geneva Lake and built their “summer cottages” along its shore the area once again changed. These changes can readily be seen by comparing the maps from different times. “The Mapping of the Past exhibit displays the maps in chronological order, starting with the Indian legend map,” said Jim Davis, a museum docent. The legend map shows the areas where the Native Americans dug for clams and where they planted their fields of corn.

On display with this map is a picture of one of the early surveyors who traveled the area surveying land for the government to set up the plat maps. The tools shown here were original surveying tools, which have been at the museum for years. “This map is displayed along with the surveying and drawing equipment that were used to produce the map. These tools were donated to the museum several years ago,” said Davis. While many of the maps on display are those that were gifted by Ed Weed, there are others that are on loan or belong to the museum. One such map is the original map of Lake Geneva believed to have been drawn about 1840 by surveyor Thomas McKaig. It was found at Black Point Estate in an elevator and was placed on loan to the Geneva Lake Museum for the display. A map drawn by Quincy Albert Heagman is also on display and was also located inadvertently by the museum staff. It was found in the storage room of

The display is arranged to showcase not only the maps but to add small glimpses of life around the lake at that time. A variety of displays are adorned with mementos from some of the homes located on the shore. A chair from Wrigley Field and a beer tap from the stadium a reminder that the Wrigley’s

were the owners of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Silver cream and sugar sets from another mansion, a reminder that just because they were in the country they did not give up the luxury that was part of their lives. A horse from a wind vane appears in one of the displays. Another display of importance is that of a flag that flew more than 125 years ago on the original excursion steamer, The Lady of the Lake. It was built by Captain Edward Quigley and launched in 1873. This original Paddle Wheeler now rests at the bottom of the lake that it served for many years after sinking in Button’s Bay.

Maps are drawn for many different purposes and it seems that almost all of them are represented in this display. Some of the maps are plat maps created to distinguish property boundaries. Railroad maps, fishing maps, street maps and trail maps are but a few of the types of maps on display. Hydrographic maps display the depth of the water at various spots and elevations. Each map serves a specific purpose and teaches something more about the time it was created.

The railroad arrives

Railroads made their way into the area in the late 1800s. Many maps of the time displayed the Railroad routes coming from Chicago, Milwaukee, and Rockford to Lake Geneva and Williams Bay and other towns in Wisconsin. The railroad was the fastest way to get up to Lake Geneva as the roads were very rudimentary and few people had automobiles. Individual properties were not always accessible by road. Families would arrive by train for the summer to Lake Geneva or Williams Bay, then be transferred by boat to their summer homes. Railroad companies provided

The original Lady of the Lake made daily trips from Geneva to Fontana to bring visitors to the various parks. Fare was 50 cents round trip.

Weed began collecting maps in the 1950s and when asked why he has collected so many, he replied, “They just seemed to keep growing.” He always seemed to locate another map that he did not have in his collection. The map lovers of the area and many who have visited the display at the Geneva Lake Museum are grateful that he has continued to collect this historic memorabilia. Mapping the Past will be an ongoing display. According to Ewing, museum officials plan to rotate some of the maps in and out of the exhibit giving it a fresh look and beckoning visitors to return. Because the Lake was the front entrance to these houses the estate maps would list the names of the owners and also the number of the pier. They did not have a street address for many years. It was the pier number that served as their postal address and a way to locate the home from the water. The 1905 Rand McNally map lists the names of landowners both on the lake and the farms located in the area. It was from these local farms that the summer visitors would purchase the fresh produce grown in the area for their family meals. Fishing was obviously a favorite activity on the lake. A Hollywood connection

Lake Geneva drama teacher Kerwin Mathews went on to film fame in ‘50s and ‘60s

by Sandra

Landen Machaj

Before Kerwin Mathews was known as CORRESPONDENT a swashbuckling film hero, rescuing fair damsels in distress from monstrous creatures, he was a Wisconsin resident known for his work in local theater and as an English and speech teacher at Lake Geneva High School. Mathews was born in Seattle, on Jan. 8, 1926, but did not remain a resident of Washington State for long. When he was 2 years old, his parents divorced and he left Washington with his mother to settle in Janesville. It was while attending high school in Janesville that he became interested in appearing on the stage in high school productions. He credits a high school teacher for changing his life by putting him in the school production. Following his graduation from Janesville High School in 1943, he like many of the young men of the time entered into military service to support the United States’ efforts in World War II. For Mathews it was the Army Air Corp. Two years later, upon discharge from the service, Mathews attended Milton College where he continued to perform in stage productions. After two years, he transferred to Beloit College on both a drama and a music scholarship. Here he completed his formal education while continuing to work as an actor in regional theater companies. Graduation from Beloit College did not mean that Mathews left the college or even the Beloit area. He remained there for three years teaching speech and dramatic arts while he continued his work in local theater.

Arriving in Lake Geneva

After completing those years teaching at Beloit, he made a move to Lake Geneva Here he taught English classes at Lake Geneva High School.

Doug Wild, who grew up in Lake Geneva and was a student of Mathews, recalls his former teacher as “a mild mannered man who was very soft spoken. He would put on skits for the class.” One such skit was The Lone Ranger. He would move across the hall and using a speaker project the skit into the classroom including the many sound effects that were used in radio productions of the time. “The class would cheer loudly.” Mathews was 6 feet, 1 inch in height, slender with dark hair and possessed the classic movie star look of the time. This look was not lost on the teenage girls of the school. More than one had a crush on Kerwin Mathews. Vern Magee was one of the young ladies who had Mathews for a teacher. “He was a wonderful teacher, soft spoken and kind to all the students and so handsome,” Magee said. “Most of the girls had a crush on him at some time.” Judy Townsend was another of Mathews’ students who noted that he was a wonderful teacher who was really interested in all his students. “He taught English and drama and was always willing to work with the students to bring out their best,” she said. “He attended all the school activities and was always open to listening to his students when they needed someone to talk to.” Townsend kept in touch with him for more than 10 years after he left. They exchanged information about their lives and he often sent her photographs.

Moving to Hollywood

Mathews’ time in Lake Geneva was limited as he left the area in the mid 1950s to move to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Here he received a role in a production at the Pasadena Playhouse. The Playhouse was well known as the

place many young actors developed their craft and moved on to become better known and into greater roles. Mathews was no exception, while appearing here, his acting career took on a new dimension. An introduction to the casting director of Columbia Pictures resulted in Mathews being awarded a seven-year contract with the studio. As with many actors beginning their careers, Mathews found small roles in both plays and television series. Among the television programs he appeared in, were “Space Patrol.” In the 1954 episode “The

Escape of Mr. Proteus,” he took on the role of Major Caldwell. He also played the role of Lt. Norton in Ford Theatre’s “Charlie C Company” in 1954. He also appeared in several episodes of the Ford Television Theatre, Playhouse 90, Matinee Theatre, the Goodyear Television Playhouse and, finally, in the 1960s, he appeared in several episodes of Walt Disney’s “Wonderful World of Color.” “The Waltz King” was a two-episode program produced in 1963, by the Disney Series. Mathews was cast as Johann Strauss Jr. In an interview published in the New York Times, his life partner Tom Nicoll was quoted as saying, “He was most proud to play Strauss.” In the role he had to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra.

From TV to film

As he moved into movies, he was given an uncredited role in “Cell 2455, Death Row.” His first credited roll came the same year, in the 1955 production of “5 Against the House.” The movie tells the story of four college friends who decide to carry out a four-casino robbery in Las Vegas – a plan that backfires badly. The other three college pals were played by Guy Madison, Brian Keith, and Alvy Moore with Kim Novak in her first starring role playing the love interest of Guy Madison. For his role, Mathews was paid $200 a week. His successful performance in “5 Against the House” led to his being cast in the lead role in an adaptation of “Joseph and His Brethren.” Rita Hayworth was signed to play the female lead. However, this film was not meant to be. The production was cancelled shortly before filming was scheduled to begin. He next was chosen to play Lee J. Cobb’s son in the 1957 production of “The Garment Jungle.” Moving on to his next production, he was promoted to star, performing the role of Sgt. Thomas A. Sloan in the war film “Tarawa Beachhead.” This 1958 production was produced by Charles Schneer, who often worked with special effects master, Ray Harryhausen. These two men would become very

important in Mathews’ future and the rise of his career. It is due to his work with these two men that Mathews would be remembered.

His big break

Impressed with the professionalism of Mathews’ work, Schneer cast him in the title role of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.” In this sci-fi/fantasy film, Matthews as Sinbad would be called upon to undertake a quest to save and to remove a spell cast on the Princess, played by Kathryn Grant. He would be required to battle a variety of monsters including a living skeleton, a twoheaded bird, a cobra woman, and a Cyclops. To accomplish the scenes, Harryhausen would produce the special effects. Harryhausen was known then and continues to be known as the leading producer of unique special effects. His technique was called a split screen film because the hero would fight the monsters on screen but without the presence of his opponent. Then the genius of Harryhausen would come into play when he built the Cyclops or other monster and would film him responding to the actor’s movements. Each scene was carefully designed by Harryhausen and took an immense amount of time to film and merge. “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” took seven months for Harryhausen to complete the split screen work, which was known as Dynamation. Mathews was one of few actors who could fight the monsters when in fact they were not in the scene and make it look believable that he was actually fighting his opponent. Imagine trying to cower in front of the Cyclops who was not visible to him. Mathews’ sword fight with the skeleton was considered his best Mathews played Johann Strauss in the Disney production of the Waltz King, a role that he considered his favorite.

performance. Mathews became proficient at fencing while a student at Beloit and was able to maintain the illusion that he was actually battling the skeleton. His ability to focus on a non-existent opponent made him a valuable asset to Dynamation. Although Mathews made several other sci-fi/fantasy movies such as “The 3 Worlds of Gulliver,” in which he played Dr. Lemuel Gulliver, and “Jack the Giant Killer,” in which he of course was cast as Jack, it was “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” that was considered his best film. The duel with the skeleton was noted to be his and Harryhausen’s most realistic scene.

Preserved for history

In 2008 “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress chooses films to be included in the registry that are considered to be culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. The split screen scenes fit the bill. With the success of “Sinbad,” Columbia cast him in a prestigious film starring Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy, “The Devil at 4 O’clock.” Mathews played the role of Father Joseph Perreau and received billing directly under Sinatra and Tracy. When his contract with Columbia Pictures ended in 1963, Mathews continued as a freelance actor making some low-budget films and appearing in various television programs, including the popular “General Hospital” and “Ironside.” Mathews retired from acting in 1978. He moved to San Francisco and embarked on a new career operating an antique store. Kerwin Mathews died on July 5, 2007, at the age of 81, reportedly of a heart attack, in his home in San Francisco with his partner of 46 years at his side. While Mathews left Wisconsin more 50 years earlier, Wisconsin never forgot him. To honor his legacy, the city of Janesville renamed a one-block street adjacent to the former Janesville High School, Kerwin Mathews Court. The former school building, which has been renovated, is now the home of the Janesville Performing Arts Center. PHOTOS COURTESY OF GENEVA LAKE MUSEUM Spirit of Geneva Lakes

Sanctuary celebrates tiger’s 19th birthday Bengal tiger has pampered life at Valley of the Kings by Dennis West STAFF WRITER

It was a beautiful day for a party. More than 50 volunteers and staff gathered at Valley of the Kings Animal Sanctuary in Sharon on Sunday, May 26, to celebrate the 19th birthday of a Bengal tiger named Kubwa. Kubwa, who had not yet shed his winter coat, elected to remain in the cool comfort of his house while his admiring humans visited the rest of the Sanctuary’s residents and ate birthday cake. Once he gets rid of his very thick coat, he will enjoy basking in the sun like most other cats. Unlike most Valley of the Kings’ animals who have been rescued from unpleasant circumstances, Kubwa was owned from the time he was a cub by a woman in Big Bend. When she realized how big he was going to get and that there was no way she would be able to take care of him, she offered him for adoption. Valley of the Kings founders Jill Carnegie and Jim Tomasi offered the beautiful four-month-old Bengal a home. He has enjoyed a peaceful and pampered existence ever since. His enclosure mate, Trio, passed away some time back and the VOTK staff are looking at other residents to see if there is a suitable pal for him. Although Kubwa (the name means BIG in Swahili, though why a Bengal Tiger, none of which live in Africa, should have a name in the lingua franca of the eastern part of that continent, is a mystery) might not admit it, his main problem is that he is overweight. When the staff decided he might have a tumor in his stomach, they had to sedate him before 12 people were able to lift him onto a stretcher in preparation for his trip to Fox Lake Animal Clinic. Since Valley of the Kings doesn’t have access to a scale that goes that high, they have had to estimate that he weighs between 600 and 700 pounds. The good news is that there was no tumor, just fat. The bad news is that

age and weight have taken their toll on the strength of his hind legs. But who expects a 19-year-old cat, no matter how big, to be able to gambol like a kitten? And he is blessed with a wonderful disposition.

The grizzly bears were acquired from a roadside “zoo” in Banks, Ala. Carnegie received a call from someone who said the zoo was being closed down and if they didn’t find a home for the bears, they would be euthanized. Carnegie reluctantly Pampered existence decided to take on the responsibility. Today, there are more than 100 animals on the property, including goats, peacocks, a big land tortoise, a leopard and many more. It takes 40 volunteers and four staff members to look after them 365 days a year. “The animals come in from USDA seizures, the Department of Natural Resources brought us cougars and we get calls from people who buy an animal illegally and then wonder what to do with it?” Carnegie recently told a reporter from Milwaukee’s Channel 58. “They call us and we pick them up to give them a home.” Valley of the Kings is always looking for donations. “We feed 1,500 pounds of food to the animals every day, seven days a week,” said Carnegie. “We do not believe in fasting the animals one day a week, as some zoos and private collectors do.” The sanctuary is located at W7593 Town Hall Road in the Town of Sharon. – Glen Miller on the profit margin for hemp

Glen and Amy Miller are in their second year of growing industrial hemp plants on their land in the Town of East Troy. They are partnering with Stacy Peterson to help produce products made from the hemp crops.

Area farmer turns to non-intoxicating variety to make ends meet by Troy Sparks CORRESPONDENT

Glen and Amy Miller aren’t full-time farmers – they work full-time jobs. But the profits from their corn, bean and soybean crops have been shrinking. “The crops’ profit margins are less every year,” Amy Miller said. “And you basically take your profits to the next year (to survive).” The Millers were convinced to plant a different type of crop that has the potential to revive an old industry in Wisconsin. “Sonja (Hintz) really talked me into (hemp farming) last year,” Glen Miller said. “She was like, ‘I got a group of people. They know what they’re doing. They need land.’ And I said, ‘I’m in.’” Glen and Amy took two weeks to decide to grow hemp on their land because they thought it was worth giving it a try. And if the Millers are successful, it could give them some breathing room financially. Farmers in Wisconsin had this option available in 2018 to supplement their crop production and make extra money if they chose that route. They experimented with planting and harvesting industrial hemp that would be converted into products to help treat chronic pain, nutritional or other health needs in our everyday lives. The Millers and other farmers can grow hemp without fear of being prosecuted because they are participating in a program that was launched in Wisconsin in 2018. This is the Millers’ second year planting hemp under the Wisconsin pilot program.

Change in law

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 was signed into

law Dec. 20 by the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. The new law changed the way certain federal authorities can monitor the production and marketing of hemp, which is defined as cannabis. Derivatives of cannabis with extremely low concentrations of the psychoactive compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol must be less than 0.3% on a dry weight basis, according to the FDA statement. Hemp was once an illegal drug under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Now hemp is removed from the list of illegal substances and farmers are free to grow and process hemp if they adhere to the regulations. Before Congress passed the Hemp Bill that President Donald Trump signed into law, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, state lawmakers, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection met to discuss a new hemp research pilot program and the effect of the 2017 Wisconsin Act 100 law that included cannabidiol and THC. In the May 10, 2018, statement, then Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel said that “industrial hemp has the promise of being an important part of our critical agricultural economy, and Wisconsin farmers who choose to participate in this pilot program deserve and need legislative and regulatory certainty from all parts of government.” The Wisconsin industrial hemp program is administrated by the DATCP and it allows Wisconsin farmers to grow and sell industrial hemp as long

as they get a permit and follow certain requirements. The farmers are exempt from criminal prosecution if their products made from industrial hemp, including CBD, are lawful. The Millers’ permit is under the name of Kenzie Jean. It was a name that Glen Miller chose himself when he decided to form an LLC. Hemp growers pay a one-time fee of $150 for up to 30 acres, $5 an acre from 31 to 199 acres and $1,000 for a lifetime maximum. The annual registration is $350. It costs $250 to sample and test each plant and $15 in the change in operations manager. There is no cost for the first change in the license amendment and $50 after each additional change. The hemp processors aren’t charged a license fee. They pay a $100 fee each year. Each field is tested and sampled by DATCP and must test below 0.3% THC. There is one retest allowed per failed field and any crops that fail must be destroyed. Hintz helped the Millers with the growing of their hemp plants last year. New direction

The Millers went in another direction this year. They have a new strategy for a successful harvest this year with additional resources through Connoils LLC. Soil samples were collected by Connoils and they showed no pesticide residue. Glen got an early jump on buying hemp seeds from a reputable company. He said everything is working according to plan. Through trial and error from Glen’s previous experience and his new connections in the hemp industry, he feels better prepared for this seasons’ harvest. “There’s so much more with the hemp,”

exceed 0.3 percent.

Amy Miller said. “There are so many benefits to hemp. The whole plant has multi-purposes from clothing to medicine. So, this is a win-win for everybody if we can make it work.” The Millers are planting every seed, by hand, when they are not working their regular jobs. “There are farmers out there that are hurting,” Hintz, a registered nurse, said. “Because it’s such a big industry, there are a lot of outside people that want to come in (and see what it’s about). East Troy can move forward in this and make this a viable commodity. It would be really good. My hope is to have the public understand that we could really use this industry. “Hemp is cannabis, but it’s not marijuana, so it can’t get you high. You can smoke the whole damn field and you wouldn’t get high.” Hintz said someone who ingests fullspectrum hemp CBD oil may have a drug screen show positive for THC, even when the hemp-derived CBD oil has less than 0.3%. “The reason is this small amount is processed through the liver at different rates in different people,” Hintz said. “The amount of hemp CBD consumed and how they metabolize (it) affect how fast the full spectrum oil is broken down.”

Guaranteed demand

oils, oil powders, soft gels and specialty ingredients. Connoils is in its second year partnering with Wisconsin hemp farmers. After the state gave the green light to grow industrial hemp, Peterson connected with 24 Amish Stacy farmers in the Verona and Peterson Viroqua areas, who agreed to plant between two and 10 acres of hemp. Her company will buy hemp crops from growers in Wisconsin if they meet the state limit of 0.3%. “We are so proud to be able to help in the farming community,” she said. “(Hemp farmers) are going to be able to demand a higher premium for their crops. Our customers are looking for bulk product. “The biggest problem with farmers right now in the state of Wisconsin is that they have to have an outlet for their crops. And that’s the scariest thing for them,” Peterson said. “So, what we did is, we designed contracts that said, ‘As long as your crop does not exceed the state limit of 0.3 percent, we will buy your crop, no matter what.’ So that was a reassurance for them as opposed to just planting it and hoping (companies) will come (to buy their crops).” It’s too early to determine the success rate or the profit margin in growing hemp crops. “Who cares (about the profit margin split)?” Glen Miller said. “It’s better than corn and soybeans. That’s all I can say.”

And I’m like, ‘OK, I don’t want to look at that.’ (I kept looking) and I was like, ‘Wow, I want to do this!’ This is like the NFL.” The women who play in the LFL wear a two-piece bikini suit and foam shoulder pads on top of their sports bra, which has their uniform number on the left side. These women hit and tackle hard, and as in all contact sports, injuries and bruises will occur in every game.

Joining the league

Mestan received a tryout invitation from Chicago after John Alder, Mestan’s personal trainer in high school, contacted Bliss coach JaDae McGuire, a former athlete at West Virginia University and a one-time member of the Green Bay Packers. She went down to Chicago and impressed the coaching staff in the 2-1/2 hour workout. That led to invitations to minicamp and the regular training camp. “When I first went in, I thought there were going to be a lot of people,” Mestan said. She said about 25 players tried out for the team and after the final round of cuts, the Darien resident made the squad and became a starter for the four-time league champions at center. Mestan would like to have a five- to eight-year career in the league. She said the team gets tremendous fan support at their home games. “I’ve been signing autographs for kids when we had our first home game, and I was like, ‘Wow, there’s a lot of kids here,’” Mestan said. “At least the parents know that this is actually like football. It’s not like, ‘Oh, girls wearing

bikinis and we’re pretty much starting fights.’ I’m glad some families, especially like wives and girlfriends, understand that because the sport is supposed to empower women and make them feel a little bit better.” Mestan tells kids to learn to dream big and learn to bounce back when things don’t always go their way.

Past, present and future

Mestan graduated with an associate degree in criminal justice and law enforcement at Gateway Technical College in Elkhorn. The 2011 Delavan-Darien High School graduate went into the police academy and was entering the home stretch. Mestan didn’t complete the last three weeks and two days of training because she became sick and the academy dismissed her. Mestan has little free time, and she likes to keep busy. She worked as a security officer, patrol officer and a private arms security officer. Mestan is a minority owner of CPR Certifiers with her mother Cathy. They teach CPR classes

to employees such as medical personnel and first responders and train them for certification or re-certification. Mestan also spends a lot of time in the gym as a personal trainer, but she takes a break from training some of her clients during the football season. Mestan likes to help her clients reach their fitness goals. And she went from being overweight to looking leaner and muscular. Mestan weighed about 230 and 240 pounds before she began working out. In nearly a three-year period, she lost 80 pounds of fat and gained 30 pounds of muscle through endurance and weight training. The athletic background in the Mestan household originated from Kate’s dad, Steve, who was a defensive lineman in high school, and older brother, also named Steve, who was an all-Southern Lakes Conference linebacker for the Comets and played football from 2009 to 2013 at the University of Kansas. Kate played softball and was a sprinter in track at D-DHS. Mestan said her brother, who now lives in Lawrence, Kansas, gave her the inspiration to play football. Both of Kate’s parents plan to attend her last Bliss regular- season home game on July 20. Kate’s parents, brother and Alder are her role models. “My brother is my big motivator,” she said. “I really looked up to him in high school, even though I was the cheerleader type and always cheering him on. I know now he’s there cheering for me. It’s quite rewarding. “It just shows that someone that you keep looking up to can have so much of an impact and so much learning that you learned from this person and (say), ‘Hey, my brother taught me (football) and I’m good at it, so I’m going to do it.” Mestan has a place in her heart for Jeff Myers, who gave her the nickname “X-Factor,” which meant “an excellence that one can’t describe that makes someone very unique with an extraordinary ability and a gift that will allow an individual to reach their goals if they put their mind to it.” That is also the name of her personal training business. Kate and Jeff were childhood friends and homeroom buddies from the sixth grade through high school. Myers served in the U.S. Army and worked as an HVAC technician. He was in the apprenticeship program in Madison at Komfort Heating and Kettle Moraine Heating and Cooling at the time of his death, at age 24, in 2017. At this point, Mestan doesn’t plan to slow down, relax a bit and smell the roses because there are more goals in her life to accomplish.

Clear Water Outdoor employee Owen Martin (from left) gets ready to give Caitlin Gunther, Jennifer Stavro and Heather Gunther, of Tampa, Florida, a quick lesson in how to use the paddles when they ventured out on to Geneva Lake kayaking.

Clear Water finds its niche GEAR, RENTALS GET PEOPLE OUTSIDE by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

The Clear Water Outdoor store in Lake Genva is at 744 W. Main Street. The company also has a store in Delafield. In addition, the company has a trio of rental spots in the Geneva Lakes area.

With warmer temperatures finally taking hold in the area, people are itching to get out on the water. For those seeking outdoor activities of any type – especially those on the water – one local company may be a good place to stop. Between Geneva Lake and Lake Como, Clear Water Outdoor – based in Lake Geneva – has a trio of rental posts that offer customers the opportunity to kayak or stand up paddleboard (SUP). There is also a retail store that features a variety of items from clothing to shoes to hats and sunglasses, all aligned with time spent outdoors. The company got its start in 2005 when founder Sarah Cruse Schuster, who

grew up in Lake Geneva, decided to put her many years of experience toward a new venture, according to store manager, Sean Payne. “Sarah worked for other companies but she came home one day saying the company she was working for at that time wasn’t doing it right. Three months later Clear Water Outdoor opened,” Payne said. The business name is rooted in the Potowatomi name for Geneva Lake; Kishwauketoe, which means clear water, according to its website. In Lake Geneva at the waterfront near the municipal boat launch, Clear Water Outdoor began teaming up with Baker House a few years ago to store the rental items just across the street from the pier.

“That has worked out really well. We also have rentals at The Ridge on Lake Como, and Big Foot Beach State Park by the Boat House,” Payne said. Kayaks can be rented for one person or for two people, also referred to as tandems, and are available in both the sit-in and sit-on-top versions. The SUPs are fairly standard and all the items can be rented for one hour, two hours, four hours or a full day, ranging in price from $25 to $350. Payne said most weekdays there aren’t issues renting a kayak or SUP on-site but on weekends and holidays, reservations are recommended.

Owen Martin staffs the rental post on Geneva Lake for Clear Water Outdoor on a recent sunny day.

Gear for any weather

Payne said the tagline used by Clear Water Outdoor is the best way to sum up what they offer and it’s based on quality products. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. That’s what we say,” he said. “So if the weather is bad you can still go out. You just need the right gear. The items we sell aren’t cheap but from the quality of how it’s made to the way the companies of the products stand behind their items is on a different level.” Payne said working with companies with those high standards is a priority for Clear Water Outdoor. “We look at the practices of the companies we buy products from and we also look at the warranty. So 99 percent of the time, if you’re wearing our products and have issues, we can get them replaced,” he said. The store has clothing items available in several categories including tops, bottoms, base layers, endurance, swimwear, outerwear and shoes. In the gear department, items sold (some are available in store, more online) include backpacks and bags, hammocks, watches, coolers and sunglasses. Payne said the brands carried by the store are all high quality such as Patagonia, Kuhl and Mountain Khakis and it shows by how they stand behind their products. “That’s the biggest thing – someone can bring me a Patagonia shirt with a hole in it. It’s a lifetime guarantee so while we can’t always replace it with the exact same shirt, we can find a comparable one or get them a gift card,” he said. Payne said some of the companies whose products they sell will repair items whenever possible. “Their whole thing is to not to throw it in the landfill. Like Chaco sandals – if the sole wears out you send it in for $30 after having it for years and they’ll put a new sole and mesh on it and send it back. It’s like getting a brand new pair for a fraction of the cost,” Payne said. Some of the current hot items at the Clear Water Outdoor store are Hydro Flask water bottles and Pura Vida jewelry. Payne said the back of the store features a clearance section so that’s a good way to get a deal on a good product. “And the items in that section are

A quick pick-me-up Company offers options to make tile look like new

Replacing an entire bathroom is costly, often in the $20,000 range depending on the quality one wants to put into the room. “That isn’t a cost many families can handle in today’s economy,” Grout Experts Kevin Ferrara, owner, said. So calling on Grout Experts might be the answer. “A shower that would cost $2,300 to replace can usually be re-caulked and grouted for around $500 making it look like new and pleasing the family and their budget.” For many the need to “spiff up” the grout often occurs when preparing for a big event such as a wedding, family reunion, or putting the home up for sale. Mold, mildew or chipped tiles are red flags for homebuyers when considering a property. Often the realtor will want the homeowner to replace floors, wall tiles, and even tubs and showers. Grout Experts can fix whatever is there and make it look brand new by regrouting and caulking. Quality service is one of the reasons that customers are so pleased with Grout Experts. Grout Experts take a personal interest in each customer. One of them will meet with the family and complete a written estimate of the cost of the job – no hidden fees. After the customer returns the signed contract the job is scheduled. “We are usually able to schedule the job within 7 to 10 days. Most jobs can be completed in one day, but occasionally very large jobs will require more time,”

But if it is not in good condition, it may need to be replaced. Grout Experts use environmentally friendly products that are safe for both family and pets. Choosing a new color for the grout can result in an entire new look for the bathroom or kitchen. Color sealing will give the grout a new look and protect it from discoloration. With about 40 different colors ranging from bright white through a variety of shades of off whites, shades of gray, terra cotta, and ending with their darkest color, midnight black, there is sure to be a color to complement the existing tile. Loose tiles or chipped, broken or cracked tiles can also be repaired, sometimes by repainting or replacing as needed.

problem with major concerns and costs for the homeowner.”

Picking new colors Popular colors in bathroom fixtures like tubs, toilets and sinks often change. For many years a variety of colors from beige and almond to colorful greens and blues were the items of choice for the bathroom. Today more homeowners have returned to white fixtures. While toilets and sinks can be easily and relatively inexpensively changed, the bathtub is the problem. Grout Experts have the answer to change the ugly tub into a modern beautiful tub. A re-glazing of the tub can turn an out of style colored tub into a tub that fits in with the today’s décor and adds to the beauty of the bathroom. The process is easily completed by Grout Getting rid of mold Experts. Mold is every homeowner’s fear.
