Dining (almost) al fresco In the past year the coronavirus has changed the way we do practically everything – including dining out. And it’s no secret that restaurants have suffered while people have switched to carryouts or stayed away altogether. While outdoor dining patios were popular in the summer, how can that business be retained during a Wisconsin winter? At least three area restaurants, including Lake Lawn Resort, have turned to plastic bubbles – affectionately called igloos – that enable diners to stay in their own little bubble while enjoying a night out. LIFE IS FINE IN THE
Bubble
by Sandra Sitting on the Landen Machaj lakeshore looking out at the water while CORRESPONDENT enjoying lunch, dinner or perhaps just enjoying an afternoon cocktail is an activity that is usually associated with summer. But no longer is it limited to summer. This winter along the shore of Geneva Lake, Delavan Lake and Lake Como, there is a new look as small igloos can be seen on the lakeshore. These igloos at a distance may look like those found in the Arctic Circle, but unlike the arctic igloo, which is constructed of snow and ice, these igloos are clear plastic often with heat and decorative holiday lights inside. Locally these igloos are found at Lake Lawn Resort, Mars Resort, and Pier 290 providing a unique dining experience in a protected environment. In a year that has been filled with limited activity outside our homes due to the pandemic, these igloos are a festive way to enjoy a safe meal with a beautiful winter view of the lake. While some may worry that dinner in the bubble may be a bit claustrophobic, visitors have said that because of the clear walls there is not the feeling of being locked in
but rather it is a cozy space to enjoy with friends. Here’s a closer look at the area restaurants the give a fresh meaning to life inside the bubble:
Mars Resort
Mars Resort on the south shore of Lake Como has been a popular place to eat and enjoy time with family or friends for many years. Known for its fabulous view of the lake and unique cocktails, guests also enjoy quality food. “A special feature is the view of the lake whether enjoying an inside or outside meal,” said Scott Pohl, co-owner of Mars. “In winter when the lake is frozen, visitors enjoy watching small private planes fly in and land on the lake’s frozen surface. Many of these pilots fly in just to have lunch – some from as far as Milwaukee or Chicago.” Last year Mars Resort came up with a new concept to allow diners to enjoy being outside on the west deck during the winter. They brought in some festive, lighted and heated igloos for a special experience. The igloos were an immediate success. This year with people social distancing,
the igloos are perfect for a family or small group to safely enjoy eating out. So, they have brought them back for another year. They have five igloos on site that each seat six patrons comfortably. Reservations are required and allow for a 90-minute period inside the dome. A $100 minimum for food and drink is required. Smoking or vaping are not allowed in the igloos nor are pets invited. With up to six people in the igloo, the minimum charge is less than $17 per person minimum if you bring five family members or friends with you. The food offered is from the “Igloo Platters” menu. Each of the platters serves four to five people. A favorite item is the Mars Famous BBQ Ribs platter, which consists of 2 slabs of ribs either in the classic tangy barbecue sauce or with their dry rub. The ribs are cut to share. Other choices include the Mars Charcuterie, a variety of Italian meats including Soppressata, Mortadella, Capicola and Genoa Salami, a collection of artisan cheeses and a medley of imported olives and Italian bread. Dips, skewers of chicken, steak, or shrimp, and bruschetta are also on the menu.

Diners may opt to finish with the Silvestri Sweets Dessert Platter and enjoy bite-sized cake, caramels, chocolates and cookies. Patrons can also enjoy their favorite beverage while relaxing with an after-dinner drink of your choice, a traditional cocktail, favorite wine, or soft drink from the full-service bar menu. Or perhaps it is a cup of coffee to keep warm that is your choice. Mars is following the latest in cleaning and sanitizing measures to protect both the staff and customers. Masks are worn by the service staff and diners must wear them when not in their igloo. Mars Resort is at W4098 S. Shore Drive, Lake Geneva. Call 262245-5689 to make a reservation for the igloos.
Lake Lawn Resort
Located west of Lake Geneva on Highway 50, Lake Lawn Resort, Delavan, has been a favorite destination for weekend getaways, weddings, golf outings or just coming out for lunch or dinner along the lakefront. This year Lake Lawn has added a new treat that is being enjoyed by visitors looking to share an outdoor activity with family members or close friends. “We have added five igloos for outdoor winter dining,” shared Eileen Cole, Executive Director of Marketing and Sales at Lake Lawn Resort. “The igloos can hold six guests and are heated with 1,500 BTU space heaters for the comfort of the guests.” Even though the igloos are heated, Cole recommends dressing for outdoor weather even though they have heat. When seated in the igloo, legs and feet can be chilled if the outdoor temperature is low, he said. The igloos are available for a 90-minute rental daily during the hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The rental cost is $75 plus the cost of food and beverages ordered. Smoking is not allowed in the igloo per Wisconsin law. No outside food or beverages are allowed. But the beautiful view

of the winter lake will be enjoyed the entire time in the bubble at no additional cost. The Lakeside Igloo menu offers varied and unique foods that will offer a taste treat to all. There is a share menu that starts with a Family Batter Platter consisting of chicken tenders, Wisconsin cheese curds, mini corn dogs with BBQ sauce, ketchup, and mustard to dip them in. Sliders are also on the menu and the Lake Lawn version is the Bao Bun Sliders made of Korean angus brisket, kimchee, satay chicken, spicy bean sprouts or housesmoked duroc pork, hoisin, and seared chanterelles. Even the nachos are unique. They’re not the traditional ground beef nachos but made with smoked pork BBQ, pico de gallo, jalapenos, green onions shredded cheddar and garlic sour cream. Street tacos with pork, brisket, chicken and beef steak are also available. They offer three entrees: Dry Rub Pork Tenderloin; Angus Filet, and Chili Chicken Bacon Roulade served with sides. And to finish off the meal, try the Peppermint Chocolate Cannoli or the Chocolate Chunk Cookie S’more. Whether a choice of appetizers to share or a full dinner, the food and the full view of Delavan Lake will make this time special. The full bar service is available to enjoy special cocktails before dinner or draft and bottled Wisconsin beers or wine selections.

Lakeside also offers hot drinks. Among the favorites are Bailey’s Hot Chocolate or a coffee with Grand Marnier and Kahlua Coffee Liqueur. “The igloos have been a big hit,” said Cole. “People are looking for a way to go out, enjoy a good meal and have a few drinks, but also want to know they are safe. The igloos provide all that and more.” To be certain that the igloos are germ free for the next group of guests, they are sprayed with an electro-static disinfectant and allowed to air out for 30 minutes prior to seating the next group. All staff members wear face coverings while tending to guests. Guests do not need to wear face coverings while inside the igloos. Lake Lawn Resort is at 2400 East Geneva Street, Delavan. Located on the shore of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Pier 290 offers a beautiful view of Geneva Lake no matter where one chooses to be seated – in the indoor dining room, the canopy, the igloos or out by the fire pits. In winter the outdoors has a very different look and seating arrangements will allow the visitor to take in lake view. “We have six igloos, three are located on the waterfront for a view of the lake and three are located on the back part of the property, said Adam Newell, Assistant Manager of Pier 290. “In addition, we have two solid fire pits.” The fire pits, according to Newell, produce a warm place to sit and enjoy a drink lakeside. The igloos are enclosed and heated to provide an outdoor winter lunch or dinner in a protected environment. The three igloos on the waterfront give a full view of the lake that is especially impressive at sunset. After dark the decorative lights inside the igloo offer a soft and festive glow. The three other igloos are placed on the property amid the lights that normally would illuminate the shoreline for the Santa Cruise. This year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to practice safe social distancing, the Santa Cruise was cancelled. So, the lights were turned into a winter wonderland for both children and adults to enjoy. The igloos are suitable to hold six guests for lunch dinner or cocktails. The igloos must be reserved in advance. There is a reservation fee of $45 for two hours to enjoy lunch or dinner or $25 for one hour for cocktails. They are open Wednesday through Friday starting at 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday. The menu at Pier 290 is large and varied. Whether the customer is looking for a light lunch or a hearty dinner of the comfort foods that everyone looks to in winter, there is an item that will be there for any palate. In winter, soups are a favorite to provide a sense of warmth. Try the flavorful baked onion soup, covered with rich and creamy cheese. Or ask about the soup of the day. Soup with a salad is a favorite lunchtime combination. Pier 290 offers a variety of salads including a Butternut Cranberry salad that includes crispy butternut squash, cranberries, red onion, Brussels sprouts, and candied walnuts with a quinoa couscous over spinach and arugula with a balsamic glaze. A variety of appetizers are on the menu from the traditional cheese curds and deviled eggs to flatbreads with unique toppings or, for the more adventuresome, tuna tartare. Pier 290 is known for its seafood entrees, which include salmon, walleye and sea bass. They also have variety of warm and hearty comfort items such as meatloaf, beef stroganoff, BBQ ribs, and quality steaks. Their Steak Stack Burger is a special take on the hamburger. It consists of a half-pound of sirloin, tri tip, and chuck formed into two patties, layered with cheddar cheese, lettuce tomato and the special 290 sauce. To protect customers from COVID-19, the igloos go through a sanitizing after each party. Masks are worn by the servers at all times when in the igloos. Pier 290 has a lot to offer for winter outdoor dining. Reserve an igloo for lunch, dinner or a cocktail hour, have a drink at one of the outdoor fire pits and enjoy the winter view of Geneva Lake or meander through the winter wonderland of lights on the property. Pier 290 is located at 1 Liechty Drive, Williams Bay. Call 262-245-2100 for reservations.

ICE CASTLES READIES FOR WINTER RUN Ice Castles, the frozen attraction what has attracted thousands to the Lake Geneva area in winters past, is set for another run in 2021. Locally, Ice Castles, will be located at Geneva National Resort, 1091 Hidden Cottage Cir., Lake Geneva. This is the third year for the attraction in Wisconsin. The inaugural year saw the Ice Castles built at Riviera Beach in downtown Lake Geneva. Opening is dependent on weather conditions with long stretches of freezing temperatures needed to accommodate construction of the attraction. The photo-worthy Ice Castles will last into March, weather permitting. Dates and hours will be announced online at icecastles.com. The award-winning winter attraction that is built on site using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists, according to the company that sponsors the attraction in four cities across North America. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains and more. Ice Castles will operate on a reduced capacity this season to promote social distancing, according to the company. Wherever possible, tunnels and crawl spaces will be clearly marked as one-way features to limit face-to-face exposure with other guests. In accordance with local and state mandates, staff and guests older than 2 will be required to wear a mask or face covering. “We are thrilled to welcome families back to Ice Castles at Geneva National Resort this winter,” Ice Castles CEO Kyle Standifird said in a news release. “The safety of our guests and staff has always been our top priority, and the new features and guidelines we have in place this season are designed to create a safe and magical environment for everyone.” Tickets (ages 12 and older) are currently listed at $18.99 Monday through Thursday and $22.99 Friday through Sunday. Tickets for children (4-11) are $12.99 weekdays and $18.99 weekends. Treating the whole person Chiropractor combines practice with wellness services by Sandra As the start of Landen Machaj another year rolls around, many people CORRESPONDENT begin to make resolutions. While these resolutions may include such worthwhile plans such as more exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation, and overall health improvement, often these plans are short lived. Why? Not because people don’t want to improve their health and fitness but often because they don’t have the knowledge
needed to implement these changes in a way that is consistent with success. They may tend to go overboard, exercising too much and causing damage to joints and ligaments, or restricting their diets to such an extent that they become discouraged. By three weeks into their program, they begin to lose their desire to continue especially if they are suffering from injury or failing to see any improvements in their health. For many there is a need to consult professional help to help lead them toward their goals.
The road to success
According to Dr. John Friedrichs, a chiropractor with an office in East Troy, “Often accepting that someone may know more about achieving your goals than you do, may lead you to finding the road that will lead to your success.” Friedrichs has been practicing
chiropractic medicine since 1994, when he along with his brother the late, Pete Friedrichs, also a Chiropractor, opened their practice to help people maintain or return to optimum health through chiropractic and incorporating holistic health practices into their patient’s lifestyles. John Friedrichs became involved with chiropractic medicine as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater after injuring his back while playing basketball. After attempting to find relief from his injury in traditional medicine without success for two years, he was treated by a chiropractor who relieved him of his pain and restored him to health. His practice, the Wisconsin Spinal Rehabilitation Center, has offices in East Troy and Brookfield. Because the clinics use a holistic approach to health, they’ve developed WellConsulted, a body sculpting and aesthetic center that works with

chiropractic treatments to help patients embrace a healthy lifestyle.
Chiropractic core
Until Pete Friedrichs’ death 3 ½ years ago, the brothers had provided chiropractic and nutritional health care at Wisconsin Spinal Rehabilitation for more than 20 years. They utilized a combination of traditional chiropractic practices, including spinal therapies and spinal decompression, along with weight loss and nutrition to provide the best possible care for their patients seeking relief from pain and correcting their disability. Today John Friedrichs continues to carry on the practice. “Many people come to chiropractic because of back pain, particularly, lower back pain, but they also come for a variety of other health concerns such as sciatica, headaches including migraines, and for injuries such as whiplash from automobile accidents,” said Friedrichs. For many, their first visit to a Chiropractor may come because of continued back pain, often the result of an injury, which has not abated in spite of trying other treatments. Sometimes they come in without knowing about chiropractic and how it works. Wisconsin Spinal Rehabilitation Center in East Troy makes education an integral part of their successful treatment of their patients. The patients are taught that chiropractic care is a type of health care that works not only with the musculoskeletal system but also the nervous system, using a holistic approach to health care. Often lower back pain may be the result of or aggravated by weight issues. So it is not only necessary to treat the back but work with the patient on improving health issues by encouraging weight loss and proper nutrition. Working on lifestyle changes along with chiropractic treatment can make a positive difference in life. “Working to reduce obesity is especially important now as obesity has been recognized as one of the risk factors for COVID-19,” said Friedrichs.

Start with diagnosis
Before beginning treatment, proper diagnosis of the problem is important. Friedrichs uses a variety of diagnostic means to establish that diagnosis. Physical examination and digital x-ray are among the tools used to ensure a proper diagnosis so that the right treatment is implemented. The diagnosis may be a simple problem such as a pulled muscle or more complex conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative discs, sciatica, arthritic spines, or stenosis. Whether it is the traditional chiropractic adjustment, which involves manipulation of the spine to restore it to its correct position is the treatment needed or if there is a need for DOC spinal decompression, proper diagnosis will lead. Friedrichs to the right treatment. DOC spinal decompression requires a special table and a computer to guide the chiropractor as he releases the compression
of the degenerative or herniated disc. This procedure provides alignment by elongating the spine, allowing the disc to decompress. Chiropractic practice and spinal decompression do not heal in one treatment. Twelve to 36 treatments might be needed depending on the severity of the damage to the discs. Back issues don’t happen overnight. They build up over a longer period of time, often years. They cannot be permanently cured in an instant, although there may be relief after one treatment. While many seek treatment when they are suffering, others maintain a regular schedule of preventive adjustments to keep their back in proper alignment. Chiropractic is as concerned with preventing injury and disease as it is with relieving stress and pain, according to Friedrichs.

a safe and drug-free manner. Based on holistic principles, they treat the entire person to achieve a healthy life. One way that is accomplished is with their relationship with WellConsulted Body Sculpting and Aesthetic Center, whose employees work with patients to help them achieve optimal health. Valarie Voelkering is certified as a life coach by the Institute of Functional Medicine and works with clients to achieve their personal goals allowing them to be the best they can be. “One of the first things we do with patients is to encourage them to develop proper nutrition. We encourage healthy eating and the removal of sugar from their diets. We recommend a seven-day sugar cleanse as a good way to begin,” Voelkering said. Getting patients on the road to healthy eating is often the first step in getting them on the road to optimum health. They recommend

supplements as needed after performing blood tests to see what elements are deficient. WellConsulted carries the NutriDyn supplement line because it is known for quality, according to Voelkering. “Some of our patients are looking for an eating plan that will allow them to control their medical conditions. They might want an anti-inflammatory diet to help control their fibromyalgia or need a low sugar plan to manage their diabetes,” said Voelkering. “We encourage the use of healthy smoothies and carry a line of fruits and a green line of powders that mix with water for a tasty smoothie.” This year, according to Voelkering has been very busy, as people have been at home and not exercising as much as they normally would. In addition, they are at home with the refrigerator close by and have noticed an increase in weight. “We talk about the quarantine 15, the weight they have gained while staying home during the pandemic,” said Voelkering. Body sculpting through the use of contour light therapy is popular with many clients. This is a non-invasive process that provides body contouring and skin rejuvenation through the use of a special red light. “While the patient is exposed to the contour light it opens the fat cells, allowing the fat in them to turn to liquid and exit the cell. When empty the fat cells shrink,” Voelkering said. The patient will see results immediately, she added. This light accelerates fat burning and will speed up the metabolism. The procedure will slim, shape and tone without pain, bruising, or swelling. For patients looking for a non-surgical way to remodel their face, chin, or jaw the use of Evoke is a hands-free applicator that will deliver radio frequency energy to the treatment area. These radio frequencies will deliver heat to the subdermal layer of the skin, which will result in a natural looking, younger facial appearance without undergoing injections or surgery.

coach at WellConsulted. Living in a world where we are exposed to large amounts of processed and high sugar foods, maintaining a healthy diet is often difficult. These foods make one fat and deplete energy. The wellness coach will help develop a diet of whole foods, avoiding processed foods. The goal is to develop a healthy diet that will result in weight loss, and increased energy. “As the patient advances in developing their healthy lifestyle, they will be less reliant on their life coach. They will depend more on their knowledge and confidence to do it on their own,” Voelkering said.

No fad diets
This is no diet trend – This is a medical program that starts by looking at your medical history, evaluating your EKG, blood work and lifestyle, according to Dr. Gail. Then, their doctors propose a plan for you, and prescribe appropriate pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections, vitamin therapy and fat-burning supplements. “The program is simple, inexpensive and easy to follow. We give you a large list of foods to buy/choose from,” Dr. Jachimek said. “The program is easy, because it is food bought in the grocery store, (no special foods to order) just regular meats, fruits and vegetables on our list. This factor also makes it more affordable, because you don’t have to buy special foods, or cook separate dinners if you have a family.” Under the supervision of their medical doctors and practitioners, patients can drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first month. Their program has proven that it is common to see 5 to 10 pounds dropped in the first week. “We have had patients that have lost 17 pounds in their first week, as well as patients that have lost over a hundred pounds on our program,” Dr. Jachimek said. Accountability is also a major part of the program. Keeping the patients safe and on track, their nurses evaluate, and treat patients weekly to provide support and give suggestions on how to reach and maintain their target weight. Dr. Jachimek stresses that there are no price surprises at Medical Weight Loss. The initial visit is $195 and weekly visits are $55. This is what you have been waiting for – an inexpensive, easy and successful way to lose the unwanted pounds that have made you miserable for years. As their slogans say, “With 248-SLIM there are no hidden fees – just pounds gone;” or “Weigh less for WAY less;” or “When you’re done fooling around, call us!” Medical Weight Loss, LLC, is at 314 Sage St., Lake Geneva, and also in Waukesha. Sure, you hop in the car and pull off your own version of the movie “Vacation” with a road trip or secure airplane tickets and pray the baby doesn’t cry so bad that he or she stops the flight. It’s roughly 1,200 miles from Elkhorn to Orlando.
Now imagine not only walking CORRESPONDENT to Disney World, but hiking there, through challenging terrains of hills, rocks, snow, ice, water and more. Enter Elkhorn native Robyn Swanson. The lifelong Southeastern Wisconsin resident and mother of two was never really into hiking and preferred to go out of state for trips. That’s until she discovered the Ice Age Trail – right in her backyard.

With trailheads in Walworth County, the historic route is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails. It spans about 1,200 miles through Wisconsin. Swanson, who only started hiking a few years ago, finished the entire trail – all 1,200 miles – the weekend after Thanksgiving. She’s used just about every weekend over the past couple years to just “hop in the car and go,” at times driving four hours up north just to reach her planned route. What was never really on her mind has become a passion, and it has changed her
life. “I first started hiking as something to do on vacations,” Swanson said. “I planned my trips with a hiking destination in mind. Smoky Mountains National Park, Zion National Park and local state parks were where I caught the hiking bug. I didn’t even know the Ice Age Trail existed, much less in my backyard. In the fall of 2018, I saw an article about two retired women who just completed the entire trail. I started to investigate and thought ‘why can’t I do this?’” Swanson said she completed her first
official segment in Hartland on Dec. 15, 2018. “I was hooked,” she recalled. “My first goal was to complete the 1,200 miles ‘before I die.’ At the end of 2019, I had completed over 300 miles and made a new goal of finishing within five years. I wasn’t devoting all of my time to the Ice Age Trail. I was also trying to visit every state park in Wisconsin and do some out-of-state trails. I was set to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in June of this year and amped up my IAT hikes to train for that. “And then ... COVID. As my other trips got cancelled, I had more time to focus on the IAT. I suddenly found myself hiking solo more and more due to social distancing. When I was on the trail, I wasn’t listening to the news and wasn’t stressed about the things going on in the world. It was my therapy. It became apparent that I was going to get closer to finishing the trail sooner than I thought.”
Hiking in sections
Called segment hiking, walkers choose what part of the trail they would like to hike, then they can move on a different part instead of continuing from where they left off each time. The Ice Age Trail is managed by a partnership among the National Park Service, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Ice Age Trail Alliance. There are approximately 121 yellow-blazed segments that make up half of the trail. The other half of the trail is made up of unmarked connecting routes linking the blazed segments. “Segment hiking or section hiking means that you hike a certain section and then move on to another,” Swanson said. “This can be done in order but doesn’t need to be. If one decides to do a through-hike, they start from one end and follow the trail in succession all the way to the other end.” The trail starts at the Western Terminus in St. Croix Falls and ends at the Eastern Terminus in Sturgeon Bay. Swanson said she is at a very happy place in her life. She works for a local school district. “I was never really an outdoors person,” she added. “Now I can’t stand to be inside.” She started the journey by doing segments of the trail closest to home, now

every weekend trip is at least a four-hour drive. So there’s no more jumping in the car and just going, it takes planning. “While working, you can only get so much done on the weekends,” Swanson said.
Taking in nature
She said she never realized the beauty in her home state and is fortunate to live in a scenic location. Also, just as hiking has become her therapy, it’s helped her grow confidence in herself. She’s been able to escape the craziness of the pandemic and the election by social distancing on a trail, alone, at times. Conversely, she’s also met plenty of new friends, many of whom have joined her on the trail. “I think I will remember how beautiful Wisconsin is,” Swanson said. “I have seen areas of the state I never knew existed. lucky to live in a state with so much natural beauty. I have learned a lot about nature in the past two years, but I’ve also learned a lot about myself. It really is possible to do whatever you put your mind to. “Most importantly, I will remember the support I received. I have had 22 different people join me on the trail at one time or another. You can learn a lot about friendships when you make a goal known. I’m also appreciative to my employer and co-workers who have been supportive when I take an extra long weekend here and there just so I can reach my personal goal. I am surrounded by great people.” The Ice Age Trail isn’t the end for Swanson. Her planned trip to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon last June is still a dream. “I still want to get to the bottom of the Grand Canyon,” Swanson said. “I also want to bring more awareness to the trail and do more volunteering with the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Now, more than ever, it’s important to get outside and enjoy nature. You won’t be disappointed.”

PRODUCTION STILL Spirit of Geneva Lakes
SMALL TOWN,
big vision
Southern Lakes communities have a role in new independent film
by Dave Fidlin
A
CORRESPONDENT
s a veteran of the entertainment industry, Wisconsin native Niels Mueller is familiar with the Hollywood scene. But when it came to creating a film with his home state in the title, he emphatically states one word – authenticity – is an overarching goal. The independent flick, “Small Town Wisconsin” portrays the Badger State in all of its beauty and complexities. It also features scenery throughout the Southern Lakes region, including spots in such local communities as East Troy, Mukwonago and Palmyra. The core of the fish-out-of-water film centers on the friendship between two characters – Wayne and Chuck – in the sparsely populated northern tip the state. After encountering a series of disappointments, Wayne decides to take his son and best friend to the big city (Milwaukee) on a fun road trip. A number of other spots across the state also feature prominent display in the film, including Rhinelander, where the plot begins, and Milwaukee. The Wisconsin State Fair and the famed Pfister Hotel are among the readily recognizable big city scenes captured at various scenes in the movie. While the film is not political, Mueller said it touches on some weighty issues – including addiction and job loss – against the backdrop of challenges blue-collar families have been facing in Midwestern states, such as Wisconsin.

WE ARE BIGGER THAN YOU THINK!

“The script originally came to me through a good friend,” Mueller said. “I thought it was going to be a really relevant piece for our time. The film does ask about what’s going on in the heartland.” In addition to the plot’s timeliness, Mueller said the characters sketched out in the early drafts of the script harkened back memories of his formative years in the Milwaukee area. “I just recognized these characters right away,” Mueller said. “They resonated with me.” As with most entertainment projects, the process of bringing “Small Town Wisconsin” to the finish line was a long and winding one. Its post-production trajectory has endured a similar path in the era of COVID-19. One early stumbling block, Mueller said, was securing the funding to absorb the cost of filming in the Dairy State. “I knew that I had to shoot in Wisconsin, and that’s easier said than done because we don’t have a tax credit here,” Mueller said. “I thought Wisconsin should be a character in the film. I also needed the freedom to get the right cast. You’ve got to always fight for authenticity when you make a film.” Convincing a financier to provide the dollars for Wisconsin-exclusive shoots was difficult in Los Angeles, Mueller said, but help did came from the other side of the globe. Producer Liu Hongtao, who has amassed a resume of Chinese comedy films, provided the resources necessary to make the effort possible. Mueller said the partnership with Hongtao has resulted in a milestone within his own career, which has included writing
and directing credits in such films as “Tadpole,” with Sigourney Weaver, and “The Assassination of Richard Nixon,” headlined by Don Cheadle, Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. “When you make a film – it’s a gift,” Mueller said. “I’ll always be grateful that I was able to come back home and do this.” The actors, Mueller said, also have their own Midwest flair that fits hand-in-glove into the film. Case in point: actress and Milwaukee native Kristen Johnston, who starred in the 1990s sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun,” has a role in the movie, playing the character of Alicia. In keeping with the authenticity, Mueller said his goal was to conduct everyday, slice-of-life and on-location shoots in small towns near Milwaukee. East Troy, in particular, plays an important backdrop in the film and came to be during a happenstance conversation with a friend over a meal in Milwaukee. “A guy leans over from the next table and says, ‘You’re describing East Troy,’” Mueller said as he recounted the description he gave of a local small town he wanted depicted in the film. “I went there, and it was great. It just has the feel.” Sharing specifics of East Troy’s attributes, Mueller said, “I liked the railroad tracks running through town – in fact, you’ll see them in the film. I like the downtown.” Filming in Mukwonago and Palmyra, he said, were natural extensions because they share some of the similar characteristics. In keeping with the film’s truism, Mueller said he and others working behindthe-scenes worked with local residents to SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
get the permission necessary to film inside homes and other sites that eagle-eyed locals could find readily recognizable. “Local people opened their doors and opened their hearts to us,” Mueller said. “They said, ‘We’ll help you make your movie. People would hear us out. We’d take them through the story. We were always open. People were so welcoming.” As with most independent films, Mueller said the goal was to bring “Small Town Wisconsin,” live and in person to the festival circuit in the hopes of netting wider distribution afterward. But the timing of post-production completion at the cusp of the pandemic forced modifications. The show has gone on, however. “Small Town Milwaukee” has been screened virtually through a number of festival organizations and has already received several awards. Its next stop through cyberspace began Nov. 11 and continues through Nov. 21 at the Weyauwega International Film Festival. While there are serious undertones throughout the movie, Mueller said the intent is to balance it with lighthearted touches throughout. “Your goal always has to be to entertain when you make a film,” he said. “The films that resonate, that stay with you, are the ones that mean something that you can take home. For this film, it’s the very message that redemption is possible. There is hope – there is always hope.” For information on the current festival screening of “Small Town Wisconsin,” visit wegafilm.com.
