Ice Castles Returns GENEVA NATIONAL TO HOST THIS YEAR’S WINTER ATTRACTION

espite warm, rainy weather at the beginning of last winter and a painfully slow start, the first Ice Castles on Rivera Beach in downtown Lake Geneva managed to draw thousands of people to the area. “That proved to us that the market is there,” said an Ice Castles spokesman. “But we wanted a location with a bit more room to build the castles and more parking.” That prompted organizers to seek a permit to erect the attraction at Dunn Field, but opposition by the public and school officials killed the move. Ice Castles released the information that they will return to the area this year, but to Geneva National Golf Resort. The site has the advantage of an easy-to-reach location on Highway 50, just east of Highway 67. There will also apparently be no problem with parking. Ice Castles is a seasonal entertainment company that creates elaborate castles built entirely from ice each winter in several cities across North America. Professional ice artisans grow, harvest, and hand-place up to
10,000 icicles each day to create the breathtaking outdoor attraction. The experience features ice-carved tunnels, fountains, slides, crawl spaces, and slot canyons, which are all illuminated at night with colorchanging LED lights embedded inside the ice. According to a story aired on WTMJ in Milwaukee, area hotel managers attributed a 14 percent increase in February over the year before directly to the ice castles. Summer resort areas like Lake Geneva have been working hard over the past few years to create events that would attract visitors during the “off season,” especially the winter months. Winter festivals have been popping up in many locales, including in Lake Geneva and the innovative kite flying event at Lake Lawn Lodge. Grand Geneva Resort has developed several events, ranging from ski competitions to the snowmobile racing finals at the end of the winter season. Ice Castles officials hope to have the attraction open by Christmas and operate for six to eight weeks. For updates on dates and schedules, visit icecastles.com.

Cruisin’ with Santa CRUISE LINE OFFERS MAGICAL TRIP ON GENEVA LAKE The Santa Cruise is the among Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s most popular cruises on Geneva Lake. The idea for the Santa Cruise came from Bill Gage, owner of the cruise line, who had seen another version of the Santa Cruise while in Idaho. He realized the Santa Cruise would work well on Geneva Lake and could be even more exciting. The journey begins at Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Winter Harbor at 1 Liechty Dr., Williams Bay, where the decorated boat will be waiting for all the children and their Serving You For Over 50 Years
families to board. Cruises depart daily (with the exception of Dec. 24 and 25). The first cruise each day is typically scheduled to depart at 4:30 p.m., but times vary depending on the day of the week. When the boat pulls from the pier and begins the journey the attention of all the passengers is focused on the illuminated light displays along the shore as the story of the voyage to the “North Pole” begins. Through a combination of music and narration, the journey continues as the captain and crew lead the way.

Warm and dry The boats are comfortable, with an enclosed level on each boat where cruisers can stay warm as they make the journey. Passengers are free to move back and forth throughout the boat – dipping into the frigid air and retreating to the heated cabin. There are a variety of displays with several different holiday themes leading up to the North Pole. When the boat finally reaches Santa’s home, he appears in the doorway with his list in hand. Are the children aboard on the naughty or nice list? Can they expect Santa to leave them any Christmas gifts or will it be coal in their stockings? During the trip there are also activities for the children to enjoy. Hot chocolate, other beverages and some snacks are sold on the cruise as well as beverages for the parents. The trip goes on no matter the weather. The cruise lasts for about 40 minutes, long enough to be interesting but not too long for children to lose interest. The cruise leaves at 4:30 pm each day with three tours held during the week. On Fridays and Saturdays the boats depart hourly between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Four departures are offered on Sundays. AREA TREE FARMS ARE HERE TO ASSIST WITH A HOLIDAY TRADITION Other than the birth of Christ, perhaps the most iconic and enduring symbol of the Christmas season is the decorated tree. For many people, picking out the perfect tree is a daylong event that is rooted in tradition and family fun. The Christmas tree as we know it began to appear in Germany in the 1500s. The early German trees were decorated with paper roses, apples, candies, nuts and accented with strips of red paper. Then candles were added to light the tree. Today’s trees take on many shapes, sizes, colors and themes with different arrays of lights and ornaments that are limited only by the imagination. For many people, only freshly cut pines,

EXPERTS OFFER TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS TREE CARE the trunk should be recut to improve water uptake. • Cutting off a disk of wood about ¼-inch thick from the base of the trunk is all that is necessary before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also may reduce the amount of water available to the tree. • Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. • The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake. • Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water. • Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake. • The use of IV-type devices to supply water directly to holes drilled into the sides of the tree trunk is not as effective as displaying the tree in a more traditional, water-holding tree stands. • Applying anti-transpirants to the tree does not significantly reduce the rate of moisture loss. These products are marketed as a way to block evaporation from the foliage surface, but in reality they have little effect on a cut tree displayed indoors. • Adding water-holding gels to the stand is not beneficial and they can reduce

the amount of water in the stand that is available to the tree. • Do not use additives in the water, including floral preservatives, commercial tree preservatives, molasses, sugar, bleach, soft drinks, aspirin, honey, and other concoctions. Clean water is all that is needed to maintain freshness. • Displaying trees in water with proper care is much more effective in reducing fire hazards than spraying trees with flame retardants. Some flame retardants can damage needles and actually increase the rate of moisture loss from trees. • Monitor your tree for dryness. Run your fingers across the needles to determine if they are dry and brittle. If the needles break easily or fall off in your hand, the tree is dry and should be remove from the house. A well-cared-for tree should normally remain fresh at least three to four weeks before drying to an unacceptable level.

The key to maintaining your live Christmas tree throughout the holiday season is to give it the proper care from the time it is purchased until the tree is removed from your home. Maintaining a high moisture level in the tree is the single most important factor in reducing needle loss and keeping the tree fresh. This is accomplished primarily through the use of water-holding stands and maintaining the water level in the stand above the base of the tree. The following research-based guidelines will help you to maintain the freshness and aroma of your live Christmas tree this holiday season. • Use a tree stand with an adequate water-holding capacity. A tree stand should have a water basin that provides 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. For most Christmas trees, the stand should hold at least 1 gallon of water. A cut tree will absorb a surprising amount of water, particularly during the first week, so replenish the water daily. • The tree stand should fit your tree. Some stands have circular rings at the top, so the ring must be large enough for the trunk to go through the hole. Avoid whittling down the sides of the trunk to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. • If the tree is to be stored more than a couple days before display, it is advisable to place its trunk in water and store it in a cool, shaded and protected area such as an unheated garage. • If the tree has been cut within the past 12 hours, it will not be necessary to recut the trunk prior to display indoors. If it has been longer than 12 hours since harvest,

The Village Supper Club in Delavan has been owned and has been operated by members of the Marsicano family since 1966. Nick and Doris Marsicano had relocated from Melrose, Illinois, in the mid-1950s for their first venture of renting cottages on Delavan Lake. “My dad loved the lake and the way the story goes is that my grandfather had a cottage up here on the lake. My dad came up to visit and wanted to get out of the city so he bought a house close to my grandparents,” Chris Marsicano, who now owns the club with his brother, Dave, said. Why his dad decided to ultimately get into the restaurant business remains a mystery, according to Bartender Alan Oleston serves a brandy old fashioned, a popular choice at any Wisconsin Supper Club. Marsicano. “My dad was a sheet metal worker and would commute to Crystal Lake and then for whatever reason – with no experience though he was an outgoing person who loved people – decided to buy a restaurant,” he said. The restaurant had an interesting history prior to the Marsicanos getting into the restaurant business. By 1890, John Hall and his wife Clara were farming the land and since Delavan Lake was booming in popularity among the Chicago crowd, they built a big house to start taking on boarders. They expanded their business quickly by building a small hotel and cottages, renting row boats and bait, and eventually building a dance Hall. The Hall’s hospitality venture became known as Hall’s Park Resort and was also a stop on the steamship route on Delavan Lake. After the death of John Hall, his daughter Clarabell Welcher ran the resort for several years. Frank Baumeister owned the Hall’s park resort from 1923-1939 after which it was purchased by John Lind from Chicago who opened a smorgasbord that would be know for the next several decades (and several owners) as The Swedish Village. In 1966 it was purchased by Nick & Doris Marsicano and Clarence and Betty Iverson. Within a few years Marsicano bought out his partners and changed the name to the Village Supper Club. “All hands-on deck” Nick and Doris’s sons Dave & Chris took over the business from their parents in 1989 and have been running it with the support of their wives Debbie and Patti ever since. Their older sister Nikki was also a longtime employee and retired a few years ago. Their sister Roxanne “Rocky” Marsicano Gonzalez still waitresses full time. The third generation of the Marsicano family continues the Village tradition. the warmer months are the busiest, Gonzalez said they see regular customers throughout the year. “A lot of summer folks come back here each year but we also have a lot of local customers who stop in year-round,” Gonzalez said. “Sometimes, we even see some of our summer customers who stop by in the winter if they’re in the area.” Supper club staples The goal of the club has always been to provide a delicious meal to local folks, as well as vacationers, in a casual, relaxed atmosphere, according to the website. And to offer what Marsicano refers to as standard supper club features. “To be a supper club you had to have a full service bar, a Friday fish fry, a relish bar or a Lazy Susan on the table, and homemade cheese with crackers on the bar,” he said, adding that the relish bar remains a big draw at The Village Supper Club. During the summer, the patio is open, allowing guests to relax while enjoying their meal with a view of Delavan Lake. But even during the colder months, guests are treated to the view of the lake – until the front dining room is full, anyway. Gonzalez said the Friday night fish fry is the busiest time but in addition to fish, there are several menu items that keep people returning to the club time and time again. “We offer prime rib every day and two or three days of the week, it’s the special. That’s a big draw,” Gonzalez said. “Our BBQ ribs are also a favorite that we’ve been serving for years and the beer-battered shrimp is another popular choice.” Besides prime rib, shrimp and a variety of steaks, the menu features numerous Italian specialties and pastas including Alfredo, tortellini, parmigiana, spaghetti and mostaccioli. Seafood options, in addition to the Friday night fish fry, include whitefish, scampi, crab legs, scallops, frog legs and lobster tail. There are also several fun-named options for the kids, including Prime Ribbee, Pasghetti, Sammy Shrimp and Piggy Pork Chops. through the business section where many of the windows are decorated for the season. The windows take on the same theme as the parade, Frosty’s Magical Christmas. Visitors will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite windows on social media. The windows stay decorated until Dec 30. Each year the tree is donated by a community member and professionally decorated. The donor is invited to come to the tree lighting and help light the tree. The next day, Dec. 7, the 44th annual Lake Geneva Electric Christmas Parade will step off at 5 p.m. in downtown Lake Geneva and wind its way through the city. This year the parade’s theme will be Frosty’s Magical Christmas, a theme that will be incorporated into the floats designed for the parade. The idea of a snowman coming to life and the sadness of his melting away brought joy and sadness to many children. Will the magical snowman come to life in the parade? Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the reindeer will

popularity of its homey annual Christmas cards, it retains the mid-America winter look as it celebrates the Christmas season. Gather in the square in downtown Elkhorn on Friday, Dec 6, by 6:30 p.m. for the official lighting of the Elkhorn Christmas tree, where Santa, Mrs. Claus and a special helper will arrive to light the tree. Following the lighting, head to the nearby Matheson Public Library 100 N. Madison St., for a reception hosted by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Enjoy complimentary cookies, hot chocolate, music and crafts while children share their gift wishes with Santa until 8:30 p.m. The next day bundle up and arrive with your family and friends into downtown Elkhorn for the 38th annual Christmas Card Town Parade. The parade will set off at 1:30 p.m. through town with a variety of floats focused on the Christmas Card Town theme. Animals and novelty acts will be seen in the parade and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will arrive in their sleigh. A variety of other activities will be held on that day. BURLINGTON For a parade with a theme that is sure to appeal to the children and young adults of today head to Burlington. This year the parade will definitely appeal to all wizards and muggles (non wizards) as the Harry Potter theme this year is “It’s a Hogwarts Christmas.” This wizardly parade will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the city’s downtown area. The parade will consist of fantastic floats and sweets and will take visitors into the world of Hogwarts – the boarding school of Harry Potter fame. The parade will arrive at Wehmhoff Square Park where Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be available to light the community tree. After the lighting of the tree, Santa will retire to his chalet. This chalet has been Santa’s home after the parade for 50 years, and according to Jan Ludtke of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, who said there is talk about replacing the 50-year-old structure if funding can be raised. Santa will visit with children in the chalet as they share their Christmas wishes. There will be live reindeer, Door County Sled Dogs, and carolers to entertain visitors in Wehmhoff Square Park while they enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.
EAST TROY Imagine riding in the Santa Parade in an electric train from the past. Board the Santa Parade Train at the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago and enjoy the ride on the lighted Santa Train as it makes its way to East Troy where it will stop and passengers may walk to East Troy Village Square Park, 2881 Main Street, to view the tree lighting ceremony and enjoy a Christmas carol sing along, kids crafts
and the Holiday Marketplace for some early shopping. Santa, who rides the train with his sleigh, will be brought from the train on an East Troy fire engine to the park where at 6:30 p.m. he will light the community Christmas tree. The train will return to Mukwonago at 8 p.m. Tickets for the train are sold out, but visitors may view Santa on the train as he passes. Visit easttroy.org for more information.

Delavan Delavan begins its holiday celebration a bit earlier, with its tree lighting ceremony to be held this year on Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving. The city tree is placed in Tower Park, 117 Park Place and lighting takes place between 5:30 pm and 6:15 pm. The park is easy to locate because of the huge water tower and the statues of several of the circus animals that are a rich part of Delavan’s history. The Delavan-Darien High School choir of both current students and alumni will gather in the park and sing carols while waiting for the arrival of Santa Claus by fire truck. He will be met by Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis, who will then proceed to light the tree officially beginning the Delavan Christmas season. A warming bus will be provided by Dousman Transport. Santa will visit with children at Bradley’s Department Store on Nov. 30, December 7, 14, and 21 from 11am to 1 pm. Twin Lakes For approximately 6 years, the Village of Twin Lakes has hosted an annual Village Tree Lighting event. This year the Tree Lighting will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Residents will gather in Central Park near the corner of Lake Avenue and Main Street. The village tree will be located near the train caboose, a permanent fixture in Twin Lakes. Visitors will enjoy listening to the Wilmot High School band and chorus performing Christmas music before the tree lighting ceremony. To keep visitors warm, the Boy Scouts will be selling hot chocolate and cookies. Village Board President Howard Skinner and Santa Claus will light the tree. Following the tree lighting, Santa will travel to St. John’s Church Community Center at 701 N. Lake Ave., where Santa and the public will view the Trees on Parade, a variety of Christmas trees decorated by local business and residents. Santa will visit with children as they share their dreams of gifts until 8 p.m. On Saturday, Santa will return to St. John’s Community Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to again visit with the children of the community. A variety of activities will be held, including a holiday workshop. Tree decorating and gingerbread decorating contests along with an ugly sweater contest will entertain guests. Carols will be sung throughout the day. Twenty craft and retail vendors will be available for early Christmas Shopping. Making it Brig ht The Christmas Barn offers seven weekends of holiday shopping

The Christmas Barn was born 10 years ago when three women came up with the idea of bringing a rare holiday shopping experience to the area. They handpicked artisans and set a goal of displaying the products in a holiday atmosphere for shoppers. Judy Halpin, owner of The Christmas Barn, and her husband, James, now own the building that hosts the Christmas Barn. It’s named Heartwood and is an event venue that can accommodate up to 125 people. The seasonal Christmas shop, featuring thousands of unique gifts, many related to Christmas, is on Highway H, just south of Elkhorn. Halpin said she couldn’t pull off the task without help from her family. “My family is a huge help – even the grandkids who are between 10 and 23 years old are learning about retail including how to stock and display items,” Halpin said.

Speaking of displaying items, Halpin said that’s key to the success of the business. “It’s not just items laid out on a table, but (whether it) is set up to make everything look it’s best. We spend a lot of time on the displays,” she said. While numerous people help with set-up, Halpin said her son-in-law, Steve Sawar, has been instrumental in the designing that was done. “We call him the Head Elf. His name tag even says that,” she said. Though The Christmas Barn is only open for seven weekends in November and December, Halpin said the work begins in October, and includes setting up the furniture needed to running countless power strips and stringing thousands of lights. There is a minimum of six people – it’s generally eight – working at any given time during open hours. That staffing level is a must considering the number of artisans’ crafts for sale, according

Adding to the ambiance will be a performance on Dec. 14 by

he Verve Art Gallery was well known for its high-end and unique artwork while located for many years on Cook Street in downtown Lake Geneva. Jeff Liberman also owns Laser Lighting Gallery in Walworth, which features a large showroom. Liberman closed the Lake Geneva location and moved the popular gallery to W5724 Willow Bend Road in Walworth, opening the combined businesses on Sept. 1, thus allowing them to compliment each other in one place. Tammy Collins has been his lighting consultant for more than four years. “We carry a variety of lighting fixtures of all styles to give your home a unique, finished look,” she said, pointing out various styles on display. “We are in a unique area where there is a variety of home styles and price points. We see everything from Grandma’s home, the mid-century look, the farmhouse style, craftsman style homes and even ultra modern homes. So we carry lighting that will fit into every homeowner’s price range and style.” There also is a large display of ceiling fans, which are sleeker and exude a more modern look. Enhanced with art
The addition of the artwork adds color and style to the gallery as one walks through the displays, pulling patrons eyes in various directions as the pieces pop into view. Helen Radloff, who has been Verve’s designer and director of sales for more than 10 years, points out items by well-known artists as we meander through the gallery. She stops in front of a wall displaying a number of handcrafted, plaster tiles designed by artist Sid Dickens, one of her favorites. Known as memory blocks, each tile is finished to either a porcelainlike quality or a worn and weathered stone look and feel. Each features a unique motif incorporating a piece of history in a modern way. Some were inspired by art, music, mystic symbols, botanicals or board games, while other tiles feature alphabet letters or a series of numbers. “People choose blocks that have meaning in their lives and arrange them to tell a story, their own special story, the story of their lives,” Radloff said. “Some start their collection with their marriage and continue to add tiles that are significant in their lives together. The memory blocks can be hung individually in a small space or in large groups to decorate a larger wall and add that special, personal look to your room.”
Words of inspiration
Radloff said that Dickens has a collection of approximately 70 blocks available at any given time, adding or retiring items several times every year. Each block also includes an inspirational statement. For example, one of the new blocks for this year is the St. Nicholas with a likeness on the front and these words inscribed on the back: “From a winter wonderland, his anticipated journey begins, bearing gifts to all who believe.” “Each of these blocks sells at a modest price and many increase in value over time, especially when they are retired,” Radloff said.

YERKES OWNERSHIP TO TRANSFER TO FOUNDATION THAT PLANS TO REOPEN FACILITY Yerkes Future Foundation made an announcement last month that supporters of Yerkes Observatory have been waiting a long time to hear. “The University of Chicago and the Yerkes Future Foundation are pleased to announce an agreement in principle for transfer of ownership of Yerkes Observatory and related property located in Williams Bay,” Dianna Colman, president of the Foundation, announced Nov. 5. Over the next several months, both organizations will be working closely on all aspects of the proposed transfer, according to the announcement with additional information being made available as appropriate. The Foundation’s objectives include restoration and refurbishing of the telescopes and building, reopening the space for visitors and establishing educational, research, seminars and various additional opportunities for students, astronomers, astrophysicists and others.
Students and faculty in the University of Chicago’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics have continued to do educational and research work at Yerkes Observatory in the past year, the announcement states. The transfer to YFF will mark the conclusion of the University’s historic affiliation with Yerkes, allowing the University to make further investments in the future of the field, including projects such as the Giant Magellan Telescope. “Both the University and (Foundation) would like to express their appreciation for the support shown by the Yerkes family, the Village of Williams Bay and many educators and scientists,” it states. Dan Koehler, who was the director of tours and special programs at Yerkes, thanked those involved for their efforts in a post on Facebook. “Here it is – the announcement we’ve been praying for since March 2018. Thank you to the members of the Yerkes Future

According to a post on the Save Yerkes Facebook page, Tuesday’s announcement brought the news many had been waiting for. “We’re very excited to share that, after a more than yearlong wait, the University of Chicago has finally pushed through an agreement with the Yerkes Future Foundation about the observatory,” it said. Why it closed The University announced early last year that Yerkes would “formally cease on-site operations” by Oct. 1, 2018. Despite its important history, the Yerkes facility and its instrumentation no longer contribute directly to the research mission of the college, which has made major investments in the Magellan and Giant Magellan telescopes in Chile, according to an announcement in March 2018. Yerkes has continued to make important contributions through its education and outreach programs, and that work, which remains important to the University, was to be relocated to the Hyde Park campus. “Science at Yerkes in the 20th century led to key discoveries and advances in the field of astronomy, when the observatory helped build the foundation for modern astrophysics,” said Edward (Rocky) Kolb, dean of the Division of the Physical Sciences and a professor in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics. “It is an important part of the history of the University, and we hope it will become, in some form, a valuable resource to the surrounding community and visitors to the Lake Geneva area,” Kolb added. The observatory was established by the University in 1897 and has been the home of groundbreaking work by scientists such as George Ellery Hale, Edwin Hubble and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.

The facility was the home of the University of Chicago’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics from the time it opened until it began relocating to Hyde Park in the 1960s. In recent decades, the University’s research in observational astronomy has shifted to using facilities located all over the globe and in space. The University and staff at Yerkes will honor existing commitments for events at the facility scheduled before Oct. 1, and will accept new bookings on a case-bycase basis. “Unfortunately, operating Yerkes no longer makes sense for the University from a programmatic or cost standpoint. Drawing to a close our operations there is the first step in a collaborative process to determine the ultimate disposition of the buildings and property,” said David Fithian, executive vice president of the University. At that time, according to Fithian, there were “no specific plans nor have we approached any potential buyers.” The work continued Though there was much negativity surrounding the impending closing of the facility last year, the work currently being done at Yerkes continued to progress and expand offsite through Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM (science,

technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.) “We are the entities who are going to move the education programs forward when the building closes,” GLAS community outreach coordinator Sheila Venteicher said. GLAS contains four programs: Dark Skies, Innovators Developing Accessible Tools for Astronomy, Girls Who Code and Star Parties. As separate entities, Yerkes Future Foundation strictly focuses on getting custody of the grounds, while GLAS Education is, “the safety net for the Yerkes education programs,” director of GLAS Kate Meredith explained at the time. Then – in late August 2018 – staff at Yerkes had not heard from the University of Chicago about potential buyers but the goal, they said, was that the tours and programs continue at the observatory once Yerkes has a new owner. Though the recent announcement is a long ways off from that type of commitment, it has opened up the possibility that Yerkes will once again offer its one-of-akind view of the starry sky.
