Venetian Festival is Aug. 17-21 The Lake Geneva Jaycees are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their Venetian Festival this year. The five-day festival runs from Aug. 17 through 21 and takes place at Flat Iron, Library, and Seminary Parks in downtown Lake Geneva. Venetian Festival features a weekend of great family entertainment including a craft fair, carnival, water ski show, traditional festival food and a beer tent featuring live music every day of the fest. This is all capped off on Sunday, Aug. 21, with a traditional Venetian Style lighted boat parade followed by the area’s largest
Bee Happy at the Walworth County Fair The 173rd Annual Walworth County Fair opens Wednesday, Aug. 31 and runs through Labor Day Monday, Sept. 5 at the fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St., Elkhorn. This year’s theme is “Bee Happy.” Grandstand shows at the fair include: Pro Truck and Tractor pulls on Aug. 31; All Star Monster Trucks on Sept. 1; Foreigner on Sept. 4; and Demolition Derby on Sept. 5. Among the many featured areas at the fair are: the historic log cabin, carnival 4
fireworks display over Geneva Lake. People can view the lighted boat parade anywhere along the waterfront downtown Lake Geneva. However, the announcers are best heard from the Riviera Beach. Fireworks can best be seen from anywhere along the waterfront in downtown Lake Geneva, but come early to get a good spot. The Jaycees will hand out free glow sticks for children. The Festival has been the banner event for the Lake Geneva Jaycees Chapter. It represents the largest revenue generator for the club. FLIGHTS OF Lake Geneva Balloon Company helps people fulfill their soaring dreams by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Floating high above the treetops, with a soft breeze rustling through the air, is a new and unique sensation for those who have never flown in a hot air balloon. The beauty of nature unfolds below as the balloon travels over open land, the heart of the city, or over a scenic body of water. In this area that body of water is usually Geneva Lake, Lake Como or the White River. For John Trione, chief pilot and owner of the Lake Geneva Balloon Company, each flight is a new experience that he enjoys sharing with guests. “Many of our customers who are booking a flight with us are doing this as a first time experience,” Trione

said. “They are often ready to experience a balloon ride as a special treat, and as an item to check off their bucket lists. They may be celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or other important event, or using the flight as an elegant way to propose.” “I am an official marriage officiant and have performed marriage ceremonies up in the balloon,” Trione shared. “Since the number of people in the basket of the balloon is limited to 2 or 8 depending on the size of the basket, having me be the officiant leaves space for one more guest of the bridal party.”
FALLING FOR BALLOONS For Trione, his love of ballooning began over 20 years ago, June 27, 1997, to be exact, when he and his then wife took their first flight as a celebration for their 10th anniversary. He fell in love with ballooning and knew that this would not be his only flight. He began working with ground crews on setting up

and retrieving the balloons and also took lessons to learn how to fly a balloon. He then took the FAA test and flew with an FAA Examiner to become a certified commercial pilot. Once his license was obtained, he became a member of the balloon racing circuit traveling around the Midwest. While he competed against some of the best pilots in the country, he was also sharpening his flying skills. Twenty years ago, he opened the Lake Geneva Balloon Company to share his love of ballooning with others and never looked back. Each day, he continues to share his love of flying the balloon and introducing others to the joy of ballooning.

A CHANCE TO SOAR While some prospective customers are somewhat hesitant about the flight, they quickly become enamored with the idea of floating above the trees and looking at the world from a very different prospective. “Balloon flying is a fair weather sport,” said Trione. “We only fly when the weather is stable and the winds are mild. That means that often the trips may be canceled at the last minute if the weather changes making a flight unsafe.” For that, there are only two times daily when the flights take off. They are right before sunrise or right before sunset. This is the most stable time for the weather. Flights are often canceled several times due to weather before the flight is finally a go. Before making a reservation, it is important to learn all that you can about flying in a balloon, including the reasons for flights being canceled and who should not attempt a flight. On the website lakegenevaballoon.com there is a complete list of information that you riders to know, including frequently asked questions. “If the answer is not there, feel free to call or email us. We are always glad to answer any questions,” Trione said. “Most healthy people can fly, and even some who aren’t healthy, depending on their limitations,” he said. “We do not fly pregnant women at any stage of the pregnancy and children must be at least 8 years of age and a minimum of 40 inches tall. At 40 inches they can see over the basket edge. Parents may not hold children in the basket. Children too must stand the entire hour.” In order to fly, you should have not had any surgeries or joint replacements within 2 years, and no broken bones. One must be able to stand for one hour as there is nowhere to sit in the basket and everyone needs to be able to hold on during the landing. “Unfortunately, our baskets are not handicap accessible so you must be able to climb into them,” Trione said.

SCHEDULING A FLIGHT For those who wish to experience a balloon ride, Trione recommends making the reservation as soon as possible. In the Lake Geneva area, there are limited times when flights can be scheduled because of the instability of the Midwest weather. “We only schedule at two times each day and during certain months of the year. One of these is the sunrise flight which at this time of year has us gathering about 4:15 in the morning and there is also a sunset flight towards evening,” said Trione. “Often the first flight you schedule may be cancelled due to weather conditions.” Their current schedule for flights is January and February weekend flights only. No flights scheduled in March or April. From May to September both the sunrise and the sunset flights are held seven days a week, weather permitting. But as they move into October and November, they go back to weekend only flights, through the second weekend in November. They do not fly the balloons in December. Once your flight is scheduled, you can expect to hear from your pilot who makes the decision on whether it is safe to fly. Then you will receive a “meet or no meet” call around 7 p.m. the night before a morning flight and a wakeup call time for the morning will be scheduled.

Since most people are not used to being up to meet around 4:15 a.m., many flyers need that morning call. Afternoon flights will receive a call about 1 p.m. the day of the flight to let them know if it is a go or no go. Dressing correctly will make the trip more enjoyable. Trione recommends dressing as if you are going for a hike in the woods. That is, long pants, socks that cover your ankles and closed toe shoes such as sneakers or boots. Comfortable clothing and shoes will make getting into and out of the basket much easier.
And then the fun begins. The launch sites vary depending on the wind direction and whether you will be hovering across Lake Como, Geneva Lake or following the White River near Burlington. According to Trione, the sunrises on Lake Como are breathtaking, the White River run is exquisite, and viewing Lake Geneva and Geneva Lake from the air is always a beautiful sight. into the air. Before you realize it, you are above the treetops enjoying the scene of peace and serenity. You move gently with the breeze as the pilot controls the ascension of the balloon.
A SENSE OF SERENITY While hot air balloons have an altitude record of 90,000 feet, these passenger flights range from treetops up to 2,500 feet above the surface. “As we travel above the treetops, the real joy is watching the passengers as they are happy and smiling, enjoying the ride. There is a childlike wonder on their faces as they return to a state of childhood and serenity. They let their troubles roll off their shoulders and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the flight.” The balloon pilot remains in radio touch with the ground crew, known as the chase crew, although as the pilot locates a suitable landing spot the crew often has to hurry ahead to get permission to land on private property. “We are respectful of property and do not land near animals or on growing crops,” added Trione. “We have agreements with

many landowners to land on their property but sometimes the wind brings us to other areas and we must seek permission to land.” The set up and take down team works together as a family. They are always looking for additional members to work with them and will train. Members must be over 14 years of age with a work permit, be able to lift 50 to 75 pounds and most importantly able to get up early and be on site at the appropriate meeting time. The entire experience lasts about three hours with one hour of that time in the air. After the ride, passengers are returned to the balloon port to enjoy a celebration of champagne and snacks. A crazy big selection
New self-pour tap house features 50 craft beers from area breweries A new self-pour experience is now open in downtown Lake Geneva. Geneva Tap House, Wisconsin’s biggest self-serve taproom, features a 50-tap selfpour draft beverage system offering a vast selection of beer, wine, and more. The self-serve system is powered by iPourIt technology and includes interactive tap screens that allow patrons to explore the options on the tap wall and see details like ABV, IBU, tasting notes, price per ounce, and more. Guests can then use an RFID-enabled wristband to activate the taps, pour just a taste or a full pint, and track the ounces as they go. Heidi and Paul McGraw, two of the taproom’s founders, were visiting their daughter in Knoxville, Tennessee when they came across an iPourIt system at Pour Taproom. They fell in love with the self-pour concept and immediately began making plans to bring the technology back home to Walworth County. “The tap wall has been a big hit with our customers. It’s fun and new and people are really enjoying the freedom to pick what they want and exactly how much they want,” shared Heidi. “The system is very easy to use and provides tons of data that makes it easy for us to manage everything on the backend.” The tap list is focused on highlighting local craft breweries and most of the beers are from Wisconsin. There are two taps for nitro brews, plus five wines and a variety of hard seltzers and ciders. The line-up is rotated regularly and in most cases, empty kegs are replaced with new products. Geneva Tap House is housed in a historic theater building in the downtown area just two blocks from the lake. The large space

The menu includes charcuterie boards, fresh pretzels, and grilled paninis. The operators plan to host special events like live music and game nights, as well as a grand opening celebration. Lake Geneva Cruise Line, a division of Gage Marine, offers breathtaking views of Geneva Lake featuring grand estates lining the shore. But the boat tours deliver much more, including a Sunday brunch buffet tour, luncheon tour, jazz dinner cruise and supper club cruise, all prepared by Lake Life Catering on one of the cruise line’s eight boats in its fleet including The Grand Belle. Lake Life Catering, also a division of Gage Marine, states on its website that it promises to deliver exceptional food service, beautiful presentation and mouthwatering food. “On all our boats, you can feel the history and novelty of being aboard a classic boat,” Assistant General Manager Ellen Burling said. “From our steam yacht Louise to our paddle boat the Lady of the Lake, all our boats offer a unique experience.” All of the boats have bathrooms on board, as well as a full bar. After visitors complete their meal or drink they can experience a variety of music talents such as a Frank 2 Frankie Tour. The Frank 2 Frankie Tour includes lunch and music show.
MEAL OFFERINGS Lake Geneva Cruise Line has multiple food items available for the Sunday Brunch Buffet Cruise, including, but not limited to scrambled eggs with toppings, vegetable and cheese egg bake, chicken breakfast sausage, sliced ham, fresh fruit, chicken cordon bleu with sauces and a series of sweets. The Supper Club Dinner Cruise, meanwhile, includes homemade spreads with crackers and breadsticks, classic wedge salad, bakery rolls and butter, sirloin steak with mushrooms or baked salmon with orange basil butter, baked potato served with sour cream and butter, and a chocolate cream pie for desert. For the vegetarian or person on a gluten-free diet, the cruise line offers accommodations. The Luncheon Cruise, meanwhile, offers a different menu each day with access online at www.cruiselakegeneva.com/mealtour-menus. With multiple choices, and picturesque views, Lake Geneva Cruise touts itself as the top boat tours on Lake Geneva. Many people online have delivered rave reviews, including a person who experienced the jazz cruise, and strongly recommended taking the tour. “The staff was outstanding. The meal was fantastic and the cruise was smooth. The jazz band was awesome,” one person wrote. “Overall a great experience. A great value for dinner and cruise.” To tour the full lake, a cruise typically takes two hours, which includes Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Meal Cruises, U.S. Mailboat Tour, and the Full Lake Tour. Narrated boat tours range in price from $38 to $50 while meal cruise trips cost between $60 to $80. When a restaurant survives 35 years, Chances are that the quality of its food and service are excellent. For Chances Restaurant 205 W. Main Street, Rochester, this has been the case. Tom Shuerman, owner and proprietor of Chances purchased the building and opened the restaurant 35 years ago and hasn’t looked back since. “I was tired of working for others and decided to start a business of my own,” said Shuerman. “After considering several places to open my business, my realtor suggested this 1843, two-story brick building on Main Street which had come up for sale. So, I took a chance on it and purchased it. That chance became Chances, the name Chances just sort of stuck.” Shuerman kept the historic flavor of the building intact. Retaining the tin ceilings, the exposed brick wall and the large wood bar, he added historical photos along the wall making the building a warm friendly space that encouraged friends, neighbors and those waiting to be seated for dinner to gather around and enjoy a before-dinner 17

cocktail. One of the favorite before-dinner cocktails, as it has been for years in Wisconsin supper clubs, is the Old Fashioned. Shuerman who worked at the former Playboy Club in Lake Geneva many years ago, became an expert at making them. He now bottles his own Old Fashioned mix that just needs to have the alcohol of choice added. “The old fashioned mix which I bottle is based on the old Playboy recipe,” shared Shuerman. “On Sundays our kitchen is not open, but the bar remains open. It becomes a favorite gathering place, especially for Packer fans during the football season when games are on. In addition to traditional appetizers, there are some specialties that are homemade. Chances homemade haystack onion rings have become a crowd favorite as well as the Reuben rolls. Like any good restaurant in Wisconsin, Chances offers a Friday fish fry. The fish fry consists of beer-battered or baked Icelandic cod accompanied by a choice of French fries or house made potato pancakes. Coleslaw, also house made, marble rye bread and applesauce complete the meal. “We also offer a unique Friday fish combo,” said Sarah Coots, daughter of Tom Shuerman. “The combo is a popular choice on Friday as it gives customers a chance to try three different fish that they may not have had recently. The combo includes Blue Gill, Perch, and Walleye all hand beer battered.” While the fish fry is only available on Fridays, the walleye is on the menu every day at dinner and as a walleye sandwich.
A family affair
Shuerman is joined in running the restaurant by two family members, his daughter Sarah Coots and his sister Sue Splan. Together they make a good team, sharing their sparkling personalities and sense of humor with customers while keeping the restaurant running smoothly. According to Shuerman, they all work together, making decisions when needed as a team. They describe their style as a democracy where everyone has a say in decisions. With everyone sharing new ideas the restaurant stays fresh. While they offer a lot of traditional meals, they are known for also adding new and unique items to the menu. There are daily specials during the week and on weekends, including the Saturday special, 14-ounce (Queen cut) prime rib and the 18-ounce (King cut) Prime Rib. “The prime rib is a special choice and frequently sells out before the evening is over,” added Coots. “Another favorite is our Steak au poivre.” According to Coots, this is an 8 oz. filet that is coated with cracked black peppercorns and pan-fried in a brandy Dijon cream sauce.
Like all their steaks, it is served with a choice of soup, garden salad or their special fresh spinach salad with hot bacon dressing. There is also a choice of potato, either baked, sour cream and chive mashed potato, or French fries. If you prefer a starch that is not a potato, try the garlic gemelli pasta, the wild rice blend or choose a vegetable. Chances’ special onion rings may be substituted for a $2 upcharge. Any of their dinner entrees with their accompaniments are sure to leave you full but hopefully not too full to enjoy one of their in house created desserts. Crème Brulé is light and satisfies that sweet tooth. Other items on the dessert menu also deserve a look.
Top quality
Whatever cut of meat is chosen, customers can be sure that it will be top quality and perfectly cut. They cut most of their steaks in house to be certain they are the correct size and purchase only top quality. Likewise, their fish is of highest quality. A variety of chicken dishes can also be found on the menu, including traditional fried chicken, pecan crusted chicken breast served atop a cream sauce, and chicken farfalle. The farfalle is a chicken breast sauteed in a white wine cream sauce with fresh spinach, mushrooms and onions and served over a bed of farfalle pasta. While they enjoy creating traditional foods, they are also known for bucking the trend and offering different options. “When we first opened, the soup that was served at most restaurants in the area was the baked onion soup,” said Shuerman. “We did not follow that trend. We created a broccoli cheese soup instead and it became a favorite. Today we still carry that soup daily.” They have been fortunate to have employees who have been with them for many years, including a creative head chef, Juan Marques, who has been with them for 20 years. In addition to the Friday fish SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
fries, and the Saturday prime rib special, Chef Marques also provides weekday specials. There is always something new and interesting on the menu for customers old and new to enjoy.
Modern challenges
Like many restaurants, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on the business. They were closed for one month and like many restaurant owners, worried about their future. They began to do carryout, which helped to keep some employees working. Now that they are back open, they are busy and are always looking for additional staff. Products needed also are sometimes difficult to obtain as some items are in short supply, sometimes causing a temporary change in the menu. “We are fortunate to have an awesome staff that has stuck with us through this difficult time,” Coots said. In addition to their dinner menu, Chances serves lunch from Wednesday through Saturday and offer a special luncheon menu. The luncheon menu includes a variety of luncheon sized salads, a limited number of entrees both traditional and special hamburgers and chicken sandwiches along with wraps. Chances is a family restaurant and they welcome families to join them to share an enjoyable lunch or dinner, or to just enjoy the camaraderie of an afternoon beverage. Chances Restaurant is at 205 W. Designing woman Growth offers more room to feel at home at Paper Dolls by Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
When Paper Dolls Home Furnishings and Interior Design first opened in 1986, it was one of several storefronts in Geneva Square Mall. Over the last 36 years, as some stores closed at the mall, owner Kristi Hugunin gradually expanded. “We’d added on and take over another storefront,” Hugunin said. “Now we have seven store fronts.” Originally just 2,000 square feet, Paper Dolls now occupies about 19,000 square feet, all devoted to displaying furniture and design concepts. The latest addition was about 2,000 square feet, which allows Hugunin to display bedroom sets, recliners and counter stools. “The reason that we did, because the customers also love to shop in my warehouse,” Hugunin said. “I outgrew my warehouse. It wasn’t easy to show my bedroom sets anymore. I had to have a nice area. “I call it my overflow warehouse,” she added. Paper Dolls started, literally, as a nickname for Hugunin and her partner, Chris Haak. The two hung wallpaper for a living, and got the name “the paper dolls.” The two decided to start selling wallpaper, but didn’t have the money to establish an inventory. So they worked with local artisans, selling their wares on consignment. The first storefront, a 600-square-foot space, was in downtown Elkhorn. “We were there for about a year and a half, and then we found this space,” Hugunin said. “That’s when we moved that location to this location.” The first addition to the store was within three years. By then, the two were purchasing their own furniture for sale. “Just small pieces of furniture,” Hugunin said. Since then, the business has continued to grow. Paper Dolls added interior design services about five years into the start of

the business, with a single designer that has grown to three now. Over the years, Hugunin’s business has developed a reputation for quality. “We set the room up so you can visualize what the whole room could look like in your home,” Hugunin said. “We don’t just do neutral furnishings. We show pops of color. We show unique pieces that other furniture places don’t have. “We’re not a big box store,” she added. “People always tell me, when they come in here, it’s their happy place.” And the space is constantly changing. Hugunin said that staff changes out displays on a daily basis. The website, paperdollsinteriors.com, is updated frequently as well. Unique artwork is also available and SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
on sale at the store. “If a customer comes back here in two weeks, they’re going to see new ideas,” she explained. The store offers a white-glove delivery service to ensure safe arrival of purchases, and designers will provide floor plans, fabric selections, custom blinds, shades and shutters, as well as paint selection, wallpaper, lighting and other details. “They’re surprised at how large we are,” Hugunin said. “How the displays are set up. I hear all the time, ‘I’ve never seen a store quite like this.’” Paper Dolls is located at 138 E. Geneva Square Mall, Lake Geneva. Art Lovers Art in the Park offers works of celebrated artists
Summertime in Lake Geneva is a time of fun and excitement as a variety of festivals are held along the waterfront. One of the most exciting events is the yearly Art in The Park Festival, Aug. 13 and 14 this year. “Art in the Park is a juried fine art fair sponsored by the by the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation and the City of Lake Geneva. This year will be the 42nd show,” said Anna Todaro Sadur, artist and member of the Geneva Lakes Art Foundation and this year’s director of Art in the Park. “The art fair will consist of about 80 artists who will
display and sell their fine art creations. The art work will be in a variety of mediums.” According to Todaro Sadur, the variety of media that will be included in this year’s show will include clay/pottery work, fiber, glass, printmaking, jewelry, metal, mixed media, oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, photography, sculpture, watercolors, and wood. Each artist who applies to be in the show must complete an entry form early in the year before the show and must submit photos of their work. “We always have far more applicants than we have space so unfortunately some of the applicants have to be turned down,” said Todaro Sadur. “We are limited to the 80 spaces that can be comfortably set up in the park. Tents and all display materials are brought by the artist who is responsible for setting it up and removing it at the end of the show. For setup and takedown, parking is arranged on the street closest to the site assigned. Work and supplies must be hand trucked to the site. “We are fortunate to have the Boy Scouts who volunteer to help the artists load and unload their vehicles,” added Todaro Sadur. Choosing the artwork
While some artists may work in a variety of genres, they must choose which one they will be showing at the fair. “They can only display and sell work in the genre that they apply to participate in. All the work in their space must be their own original work,” added Todaro Sadur. “At least 80% of the work they are displaying must be original art work created by them. The other 20% may be their work but are such items as cards or prints.” Each year, organizers hope that it will be a pleasant sunny day where visitors to the fair will enjoy meandering through Flat
Iron Park and checking out each artist’s works. What is unique to this art show is that the artist must be present in his or her booth, giving visitors not only a look at the artist’s work but a chance to meet the artist and sometimes even watch them create new pieces of art on site as they demonstrate their craft. The artists who participate in the Art in the Park event are as varied as the works they create. Some live in Lake Geneva, while others come from Chicago or as far as Naples, Florida. Many have competed in juried shows before while for some it may be their first experience.

This makes it easy for visitors to find their favorite artist. “We try to accommodate those who wish to return to the same space if it is still available when they apply,” added Todaro Sadur. “Repeat attendees who wish to return to their same space know to apply early.”
A juried show
A juried show is an art show where the works of the artist are judged by a group of judges chosen by the organization supporting the show. The judges will visit the event on the first morning when all of the booths are set up and the works of the artists artfully displayed. They do the judging early in the show so that all of the artist’s work is on display, nothing has been

This year the jury will consist of three board members of the Geneva Lakes Arts Foundation, President Nikki Marsicano, Vice President Sarah McConnell, and Board Member Robin Vail, all artists in their own right. Michael Neamond from Chicago was last year’s Best in Show winner. This well-known artist also participates in the prestigious Chicago Gold Coast Art Fair where he also was named Best in Show this year according to Todaro Sadur. Neamond is known for a series of paintings that he produced which he titled The Wrath of Consciousness. These are unique paintings which must be seen to be appreciated.
Docks by Jen
The artist who seems to be traveling the farthest to display her work displays under the name Docks by Jen. Her unique threedimensional custom-made rustic docks, many of them representing the docks of Lake Geneva are whimsical displays that may be depicting a favorite Lake Geneva memory. The docks may include your own home or a popular tourist spot in the area. Familiar names of restaurants often pop up on her docks, perhaps one that you have enjoyed during your visit. While Jen may be traveling the farthest to display in Art in the Park, Babs Schnabl may be one of the closest to display here. Living in Lake Geneva according to Todaro Sadur, Schnabl grows flowers in her garden. She then dries the flowers and uses an old fashioned press. The dried flowers are arranged beautifully and framed to bring the beauty of nature home. The brightly colored dried flowers are as vibrant as fresh flowers. Meandering through the park, which may take you most of the day, as you enjoy the hand carvings, whimsical paintings, unique feather lettering, metal art sculptures in vibrant colors and work from the largest categories, mixed media, and jewelry. The jewelry that is presented is one of a kind. Made of materials not usually seen such as nuts or rosewood burl with turquoise, crystals, and other materials. Jewelry from the more traditional silver and gold are also presented. Along with the individual artists displaying their works, there is also a tent where members of the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation will have some of their favorite work displayed. The tent is open for visitors to come and peruse the offerings and to purchase items of interest. The silent auction tent offers artwork donated by the exhibiting artists. Place your bid at the tent until 3 p.m. on Saturday and until 2 p.m. on Sunday. The winning bidders will be notified by phone on the day their auction closes, and are 30
