THE BARN

Concert series features tribute bands and local talent by Chad Hensiak CORRESPONDENT

When you think of the Walworth County Fairgrounds what usually comes to mind are 4-H kids and their animals, carnival rides and demolition derby. That vision has changed a bit in recent years to include high-volume rock and roll and head-banging fans. The Walworth County Fair is a nonprofit organization on a 90-acre plot in Elkhorn containing a heated activity center, barns, historic buildings, a racetrack, campgrounds and more. As general manager to the fairgrounds, Larry Gaffey is always

looking for new ways to raise money for the upkeep of the property. So, in 2017, he called upon his prior experience in concert promotion and management and decided to create a concert series named Rock the Barns. He said he and his staff noticed other musical venues in Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison were having success featuring tribute acts so that’s how he chose bands and genre for Rock the Barns. “Upon noticing there was also a resurgence of rock-n-roll acts in other local clubs, I decided to focus on hiring DAVE DRESDOW Spirit of Geneva Lakes the best rock tribute bands from all over Pidgin, a local duo, was the opening act for the the country,” Gaffey said. “Then, to give our shows a unique twist, I hooked up with Chris Buttleman from the Lake Geneva House of Music to find local talent to open every show, and just like that, Rock the Barns was born,” he added. With the first two seasons now under his belt, Gaffey said he considers Rock

Fans from throughout a wide area appear to enjoy the concerts, with many of them leaving positive comments on Facebook. Many of the shows have sold out. When asked what was next for Rock the Barns, Gaffey said the third season is already in the works. “Although I cannot give any hints as to what tribute bands we will hire for the next season just yet, I can say our office has been receiving as much as 10 submissions from bands each day,” he said. Bill Ehrhardt, one of the original divers who uncovered the site of the Lucius Newberry, shares the story of the finding of the boat and the difficulties of bringing up the artifacts

THE WRECK OF THE

Lucius Newberry by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

It was largest, most grand boat on Geneva Lake – until it sank in 1891

SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes

On April 24, 1875, an impressive new side-wheel steam paddleboat appeared on Geneva Lake. It was the largest boat on the lake with a length of 115 feet, which bested the Lady of the Lake (98 feet). That designation was important to Oscar Newberry. The new boat, according to local lore, was built in revenge because of Newberry’s alleged slight from Lady of the Lake Captain Quigley, who was said to have been a friend of the family. The story is that Newberry, son of Lucius, SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

was fishing on Geneva Lake in a small boat when a storm came up. He signaled to the nearby Lady of the Lake for help. But for some reason, Quigley declined to help. Perhaps he didn’t see Oscar’s signal, but Newberry vowed he would build a larger and more luxurious boat than the Lady of the Lake, and so he did.

Newberry in Lake Geneva. Newberry spared no expense and indeed proceeded to have the most luxurious boat on the lake. It was capable of holding 700. The hull was designed using 3-inch thick oak planking, which was nailed to heavy, steam-bent oak frames. The paddle wheels were said to be 21 feet in diameter with 4-foot wide buckets. Early reports described the wheelhouses “as being beautifully ornamented and representing a rising sun and a starry heaven. The boat was powered by a twocylinder, 125-horsepower Torrant steam engine.” The ladies cabin was designed with utmost elegance. Heart-shaped, it measured 39 by approximately 17 feet. Brussels carpets and richly upholstered furniture filled the room. The woodwork was appliquéd with Hungarian veneer and with heavygilded molding along the top and edges. The interior of the cabin could have been an art gallery; there were more than 40 oil works by popular painter and photographer John Bullock. Bullock painted a lot of nature scenes around the lake. He reportedly received $1,500 for his artwork. COURTESTY OF GENEVA LAKE MUSEUM AND JAY THOMPSON Spirit of Geneva Lakes The aft portion of the room featured a The anchor of the Lucius Newberry now stands in front of the Geneva Lake Museum. Located on the side near the wheelhouses was a convenient wash closet for male passengers, albeit with much less elegant accommodations. The three-level ship contained an ornately carved bar and a piano. Exquisite kerosene chandeliers were hung to add to the beauty and produce proper lighting. The circular office and salon were located in the forward section and measured 9 feet in diameter.

Deck and dance floor

Wide stairs led from the first floor to the promenade deck and dance floor. They traveled halfway up before splitting so that passengers could choose which side of the ship they wished to enter. The dance floor featured quality Georgia pine and measured 41 by 21 feet with a railing and seats surrounding it. There was ample space for an orchestra at the forward end. Music from the ship could be heard on the lake and ashore during its cruises. The boat also had a bell that was said to have come from a Mexican cathedral after the Spanish-American War. The finding of the solid brass bell clapper helped identify the ship as the Newberry. The boat was built at a cost of about $16,000. The Lucius Newberry usually made three trips daily from Lake Geneva to Fontana. A round-trip ticket cost 50 cents.

Owner becomes captain

Upon its completion, Oscar Newberry was named captain, carrying passengers, mail and cargo across the lake. He

remained captain until 1879, when John Wilson of the Anchor Line Company purchased the Newberry and one or two of the smaller boats from the Newberry Steam Line. According to one report, Wilson also purchased Lady of the Lake from Edward Quigley. The Lucius Newberry underwent major repairs — rotting wood on the hull was replaced, the engines were overhauled and SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

hogging trusses (large steel frames with steel rods attached to the bow and stern to make the hull stiffer) were added. However, these were not the only changes Wilson made. A member of the Temperance movement, he also changed several policies. In what he claimed was a means to make the ladies more comfortable, he forbade liquor, cigars or confections to be used or sold onboard. He also created

uniforms to make the crew look more professional and hired a band for each cruise. In 1890, the boat was again sold, this time to C.A. Noyes, who only kept it for three months before transferring it to Wesley Johnson. Johnson’s first act was to change the name to the City of Lake Geneva. He also renamed the company The Lake Geneva Steamer Line.

A fiery end

His ownership also didn’t last long. A night watchman noticed a fire in the stern while the boat was docked on Dec. 9, 1891. The cause of the fire was never discovered. The watchman untied the boat and let it float into the water until it sank, saving the dock from also burning. The Lucius Newberry/City of Lake Geneva would remain in Geneva Lake — 60 feet down — until July 1, 1981, when four local divers located it. One of them, Bill Ehrhardt, was credited with salvaging many of the boat’s artifacts. “Contrary to popular belief, the location of the boat was not unknown,” Ehrhardt said. “No one went to look for it.” Not until friends approached Ehrhardt, who owned a diving shop in the area. “They came to me because I had the boat.” The Newberry was said to have drifted out and followed its normal excursion route until it sank. It was speculated that its location was in a direct line in front of The Riviera and in front of the Allerton Landing. “Both were correct,” Ehrhardt said. “We were actually heading out to look for a sailboat that had sunk about two years before. I had them turn on the graphing

machine and print out what they found.” After passing over the area several times they were sure something was there and decided to pursue it. “It was not the best time to dive because visibility was poor down to 10-12 feet.” The divers thought they could see big, round hub from the side wheel of the paddlewheel and the anchor. Ehrhardt, Ron Steickel and Mark Terry returned to shore to join friend and fellow diver Herb Budd.

up that day. That 418-pound anchor is displayed in front of the Geneva Lake Museum, 355 Mill St. One of the problems when finding an important dive site is protecting it from poachers. If left unmanned the divers give up rights to the site. So in addition to planting their flag they kept careful watch over the site. “When we were diving on the Newberry site, weekend flotillas from Fontana would hang around to try and poach the site. We would dredge around the site, especially on weekends, to stir up the bottom to The four returned to the dive site, and prevent poachers from infiltrating the dive Budd took the only pictures of the anchor site.” under water, which they then brought Ehrhardt said there is always a question of who owns the articles recovered. “If there is no known direct owner, the artifacts belong to whoever pays for the recovery. After we had spent a lot of money on the dive, we tried to find someone to underwrite it. We contacted the city, but they did not have any interest in supporting the dig. We contacted Gary Gygax, who created the board game ‘Dungeons and Dragons.’ His company (TSR Hobbies) donated $10,000 to continue the dive.” Buckets of artifacts, including brass plumbing fixtures, were brought up. When it came time to bring up some of the larger pieces, additional help was required. Four trailer loads of artifacts and about 50 buckets of additional pieces were recovered. The largest artifacts were the boiler, engine and the paddlewheel. A crew took these to a storage facility in Maryland from the Smithsonian Institute, which is where they were examined to better understand the workings of these early COURTESTY OF GENEVA LAKE MUSEUM AND JAY THOMPSON Spirit of Geneva Lakes engines. They are displayed at the The Lucius Newberry loaded with passengers, prepares for an excursion on Geneva Lake. The promise of swing

April reunites golfers with their favored pasttime Even though the weather may still be cool in early April, it’s not enough to keep the dedicated golfers indoors. For those who have been fortunate to spend some of the winter in warmer climes, such as Florida or Arizona, the wait hasn’t been as long to get back on the course. For those who wintered here in the north, these April days when the golf courses reopen are a muchanticipated annual rite of passage. All that’s needed is a little cooperation from Mother Nature to provide a pleasant spring day for that first round of golf of the season. The Geneva Lakes area has a wide selection of golf courses from accessible courses for the less experienced to high-end tournament-caliber courses that will challenge any golfer. Here’s a closer look at some of the courses in the area:

SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

Hawk’s View opened in 2001 as a 36-hole golf course on land that has had an interesting history. From a farm and storage for ice harvested from Geneva Lake in the 1920s, to Mt Fuji ski hill and a summer concert venue that brought in a variety of popular entertainers in the 1960s, to today becoming one of the premier golf courses in the Lake Geneva area. The courses were designed by Craig Schreiner, a noted golf course architect from Kansas City. Como Crossing opened in 2001 after 2 years of work. It was followed by Barn Hollow, which made its debut in 2003.

Hawk’s View consists of two 18-hole courses to meet the needs of every golfer. The Como Crossing and Barn Hollow courses offer a different golfing experience based on the golfer’s ability. Como Crossing is an 18-hole, par 72, 7,074-yard championship caliber layout that has been chosen as Wisconsin’s best in 2015 and Lake Geneva’s best in 2015 and 2016. The most unique feature of the course is the dramatic change in elevation, a result of keeping the contours of the ski hills that laced the property. Hole No. 3 starts at the top of what was a part of the major ski hill and plays downhill all the way. Other holes are also incorporated in the hilly terrain. The course offers pristine playing conditions. Barn Hollow received its name from the barn on the property that predates the golf course. Barn Hollow is an 18hole, par-3, 2,708-yard course The lush greens and rolling fairways at Hawk’s View golf course near Lake Geneva beckon players to return each spring. Library on the lakefront LOCATION, DESIGN SETS LAKE GENEVA FACILITY APART

SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes

33

by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

The history of the Lake Geneva Library begins in the mid-1880s, when a group of citizens purchased 300 books from a traveling salesman and placed them in a reading room at the local YMCA. The arrangement meant that the public could read the books at the YMCA, but they weren’t allowed to take them out. To do that, residents were required to purchase a subscription for $2 per year. Shorter memberships of six months for $1 or three months for 50 cents also were available Mary Sturges, who conceived the idea of a public library in the community, ultimately was responsible for its location on the lakefront. Sturges deeded the property that had been owned by George Sturges to the city for the express use as a park and library. But it took many years before it became the library that we recognize today.

Emily Kornak, Director of the Lake Geneva Library stands in front of a display of new books. The Lake Geneva Library offers a large selection of books in various formats, book form, e-book, or CD.

The Lake Geneva Library, which opened in 1954, was designed by architect James Dresser, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, who followed Wright’s familiar prairie style. SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes

The gift of this beautiful piece of land also included the Sturges home, which had been built in 1859. The home was to be used as the first library. The deed specified only “until means shall be provided for erecting a suitable fireproof building.” It would take 60 years until enough money was raised or bequeathed to the library to build the new home. Meanwhile, the library’s collection continued to grow. It reached more than 2,000 volumes by 1900 and by 1953 it had increased to over 17,000. With the Sturges home no longer structurally sound and out of space as it neared its 100th birthday, it was time to move forward with a new building. There also had been an increase in other items such as pamphlets, magazines, films and records. Little did they realize how many more activities and services would become available through the library in coming years. Planning for the new building began in 1945 with a bequest of $100,000 from the will of Mary Gridley Bell. Additional funds accumulated from other citizens’ bequests, so serious planning began for the site that had been renamed Library Park. However, initial plans far exceeded the available funding so architect James Dresser, who had been a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, took over. He designed a building similar to Lloyd Wright’s prairie style — low to the ground with a tall, central entrance. Composed of brick and red oak, it blended SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

into its setting along Geneva Lake. During construction, the library moved its operations to Horticulture Hall downtown. With minor design changes, including the elimination of a meeting room because of cost, the new building was dedicated on Dec. 12, 1954. “Since that time we have had two additions, the fiction room and the meeting room,” Director Emily Kornak said. “The lighting also has been updated with can lights in the ceiling, and all bulbs are now LED, giving the entire building a warm environment.” For many of us, the local library is where we learned that there is much more to the world than our own neighborhoods. It is where we were introduced to other times, traveling back through history and into the future. The library remains a place to learn more about our world, but today we have access to more ways to enjoy that information. Books remain the primary reason many visit the library but they are available on electronic

They are able to download items 24 hours a day, even from their own homes.” The library includes a large children’s department with a room, also facing the lake, for story times, collective play and learning. A reminder encouraging children to be exposed to 1,000 books before reaching kindergarten is displayed on the walls. Whether building out of Legos, watching a video, listening to a story or sharing a book with fellow visitors, the children learn and make friends. “Along with books and puzzles for the children to take out, we also have American Girl dolls that can be checked out. Stem kits are also available to take home and provide additional means of learning,” Kornak said. Adults and children also can check out ukuleles. “We also offer sporadic classes given by local musician and music teacher Pamela Kundert. The ukuleles are popular and come in a variety of colors that really pop,” Kornak said. National Library Week will be April 7-13. The theme is “Libraries = Strong Communities.” The highlight activity will be the Bookface program in which participants hold a book close to their face and take a photo, transforming it into the cover. Enter it into a drawing and be eligible to win a Kindle Fire. One will be given to an adult and one to a child. The Lake Geneva Public Library is located at 918 W. Main St., in Lake Geneva. LGSO INTRODUCES YOUNG STUDENTS TO CHAMBER MUSIC ON SCHOOL DAY TOUR

by Tom Ganser CORRESPONDENT

It’s likely that a mention of the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra conjures up images of a large orchestra on stage performing a concert of classical music. This is an accurate picture of the ensemble of volunteer musicians from south central Wisconsin and northern Illinois who have been performing in Walworth County since 2001. But the picture isn’t complete without adding the School Day Concert Tour and the chamber music concert series. Now in its sixth season, the orchestra’s chamber music concert series offers another way to enjoy classical music. In this case, instrumental music is performed by a small ensemble of musicians ranging from as few

as two to as many as eight, with each member of the ensemble playing a different part. On Jan. 20, 10 members of the orchestra offered the second chamber music concert of the 2018-19 season at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva. The Prevailing Winds Quintet of Liz Ehler, horn; Timothy Graf, clarinet; Robb Keefe, bassoon; Sue Newman, oboe; Eileen Weyrauch, flute) performed compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven, Georges Bizet, and Sergei Prokofiev. Lisa Gauslow (violin) and Brandy Crawford (viola) teamed up for a Duo by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The concert concluded with a Sextet by Beethoven featuring Lisa Gauslow and Emily Sobacki (violin), Brandy Crawford (viola), Anne McCord (cello), and Liz Ehlert and Bruce Martin (horn). TOM GANSER Spirit of Geneva Lakes

Students at Wileman Elementary School in Delavan listen to the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra Feb. 1 when the school was one of the stops on the annual School Day Concert Tour. This year the orchestra performed at Wileman and Turtle Creek elementary schools in Delavan and Star Center Elementary School in Lake Geneva.

Communion Episcopal Church, 320 Broad St., Lake Geneva, beginning at 3 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, with donations appreciated. Visiting the schools The orchestra took to the road Feb. 1 for the School Day Concert Tour with stops at Wileman and Turtle Creek Elementary Schools in Delavan and Start Center Elementary School in Lake Geneva. The concert began with “Olaf’s Song,” a number from “Frozen” that was immediately recognized by the young audience. The concert included two more selections from “Frozen,” along with “The Tempest” by Robert W. Smith, “Blue Tango” by Leroy Anderson, and “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck. At Wileman Elementary School, music and art teacher Joan Guzman treated the audience to an acapella singing of “Shenandoah” before the orchestral arrangement performance. Orchestra Music Director David Anderson took time as a music educator to help the students learn hear the difference between the happy

or excited feeling created by a melody in a major scale and the sad feeling elicited by a melody in a minor scale. Anderson gave the audience a chance to hear the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion musicians play the same section of “Lord of the Dance” before joining together in the performance of the composition. As a special treat for the students, teachers led the students on an “up close and personal” walk right through the middle of the orchestra during “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Mike Frazer, a cellist with the orchestra since 2001, shared that the orchestra has been doing school day concert tours to three different elementary school since the founding of the orchestra, as the Lake Geneva Community Orchestra, in 2001. He estimates about 12,000 students who have heard the orchestra perform during these concerts. “I believe over the years we have performed in every public elementary school in Walworth County at least once, and most of them two or three times. We have performed at the most of the parochial schools in the County and in the Burlington school district as well,” Frazer said. Ginny Hall enjoyed the concert at Wileman Elementary School, representing the Walworth County Arts Council on which she serves as a director, an organization that sponsors the orchestra’s school tour educational outreach program.

Juried artwork is displayed in Flat Iron Park in Lake Geneva during a previous Art in the Park event hosted by the Geneva Lakes Arts Foundation. The 2019 Art in the Park is scheduled for Aug. 10 and 11.

Art in the Park has new director Annual event is hosted by the Geneva Lakes Arts Foundation

David John Dietrich

The Geneva Lake Arts Foundation has named David John Dietrich as the new director of Art in the Park, its annual fine arts fair. Dietrich will replace Bart Ziegler, who recently retired from this position. Dietrich is a fine artist, radio talk show host and art dealer who founded Dietrich Studio and Gallery in 2016. He holds a bachelors degree in business marketing from Eastern Illinois University. In addition, he is a student of art history and classical painting and has directed and produced independent films. “I can hardly imagine a more interesting or fulfilling pursuit right now than maintaining the uniqueness of this annual art fair and the challenges to learn the workings of such a specialized event. I am very much looking forward to Art in the Park, my new team, and working with the City of Lake Geneva, artists, collectors, and all of those SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

interested in art,” Dietrich said. Art in the Park is the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation’s annual fine arts fair, scheduled for Aug. 10 and 11 this year in Flat Iron Park. It is a juried fine arts show featuring more than 75 accomplished artists exhibiting a variety of media, including watercolor, oil, and acrylic painting, pastel, clay/pottery, fiber, glass, printmaking, jewelry, photography, sculpture and wood. The foundation also runs Gallery 223, at 223 Broad St. in downtown Lake Geneva, which features members’ work in a series of gallery shows. Gallery 223 is open from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
