Stress-busting, speed-cleaning tips for the holidays
I
t’s no secret the holiday season can be one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year. What is one of the biggest sources of stress? It’s cleaning on a deadline, especially while guests are on their way. But with the right plan in place, even lastminute pre-entertainment cleaning can be efficient and stress-free, says Debra Johnson, Merry Maids home cleaning expert. In an online survey conducted this spring by Toluna, more than half of respondents admitted that most of their cleaning takes place just before guests arrive. With a bit more focus, this preparation can be quick and effective, without stress. After all, the holidays shouldn’t be a race against the clock. They’re about spending time with loved ones. Johnson shares the following tips to clean smarter, not harder, in the limited time you have before guests arrive.
Ready, set ... declutter
The important first step is to declutter rooms. Set a timer if needed to help you stay on track and avoid spending too much time in one room. Put things where they belong, or if they don’t have a home, put them in a room or under beds where no one will see. Once the holiday season passes, you can revisit and declutter those hidden storage areas. Prioritize rooms you use most, so if you run out of time, guests won’t notice an untidy area.
Only clean what guests will see Speed-clean the bathrooms Join the more than one-third of Americans who don’t bother cleaning rooms people won’t see. You have enough to stress about as the host. Don’t waste your precious time cleaning parts of the home no one will ever see. Simply shut doors to rooms that you want to keep private, signaling to guests not to enter. Registered Dietitian Sarah Galicki offers tips for staying the course through the holidays. “There are a lot of calories packed into this time of year. You’re doing your holiday baking, people are dropping off candy and treats, there are parties with all-you-can-eat buffets and creamy drinks like eggnog, so it’s important to be prepared. It is possible to navigate the holidays without gaining weight by doing these things.”
S Eat first
Never go to a party hungry. If you do, chances are you’ll wind up eating too much, too fast. Eat a snack before you go, such as some Greek yogurt, which is loaded with protein and calcium. Add fruit for extra taste and nutrients, and top with pistachios for crunch and good fats.
S Drink wisely
If you want to indulge a little bit, have some champagne or white wine. A 4-ounce glass has approximately 100 calories. By comparison, a cup of traditional eggnog has 344 calories and 19 grams of fat (11 grams saturated fat). Skip the creamy drinks. The best bet is to avoid alcohol altogether if possible. Drink a spritzer made with sparkling water, cranberry and a lime instead. It looks festive, tastes great and has hardly any calories.

Clapper said shopping local can be so much more than just dropping into the corner store for a quick purchase, it’s a chance for a fun day out and about, visiting the small shops on the downtown square or main street and soaking in the atmosphere of the community. “It’s a great place to go for a day out on the town,” Clapper said. “Have lunch at Moy’s or pick up a coffee and enjoy a different kind of shopping trip.” Ludtke agreed, pointing out the fun of coming across a new store or restaurant that might have just opened. “Like the Sugar Bean Café, which just opened,” Ludtke said. “Our community, and all the local communities, have a lot to offer, stop on by.”

There are simple ways families can protect themselves and their loved ones, he says. “While the holidays are a special time for celebration and reflection, it is important to remain alert to the fact that criminals are aware that presents are being purchased and sent and families are leaving their homes unattended,” Barry said. “The best way to ensure your family and your home are secure is by taking precautions to remove any openings for criminals to exploit.” Barry provides the following security tips for a safe, merry and bright holiday season:
