BURPEE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Located at 737 N. Main St. Rockford, Burpee Museum has four floors of modern exhibits. Exhibits are specimen based, with strong interactive and educational components. The first floor is dedicated to paleontology; take a walk through time as your visit exhibits chronicling key times in earth’s history. The Geoscience exhibit is located on the second floor, where rocks and minerals, fluorescent minerals, and the geology of the region can be found. The Dean and Nancy Olson Specimen Viewing Lab is a window into how the Museum works. Located on the lower level, the viewing area’s large glass windows reveal the biology and paleontology laboratories where specimens are prepared for the Museum’s collections and exhibits. Homer, the sub-adult Triceratops is found in and just outside the lab. Burpee Museum maintains more than 60 thousand items in its permanent collection!

ALPINE HILLS ADVENTURE PARK & GOLF CENTER offers zip line, winter activities Visitors can experience four seasons of fun at Alpine Hills Adventure Park and Golf Center, 4402 Larson Ave., Rockford. Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners has agreements with two different vendors to provide zip line experiences and winter activities at the park.

Experience Based Learning (EBL) Zipline Tours was selected as the tenant to operate Zip Rockford at Alpine Hills, and Rockford Superparks, LLC was selected as the tenant to provide tobogganing, snow tubing, and snowboarding. EBL is the nation’s premier installer of canopy zip line tours and operations. In 2002, EBL was hired to install the first zip line tour in the United States in Maui, Hawaii. Founder Steve Gustafson has often been referred to as “The inventor of the modern day zip line,” having overseen and installed the first six tours in the United States, some 50 projects overall. Gustafson is also a Guilford High School graduate, current Rockford resident, and professionally vested in the Rockford area community. Rockford Superparks, LLC is an Idaho based limited liability company run by Ryan Neptune, President of Neptune Industries, Inc. Ryan Neptune is a leading innovator and builder of terrain parks, rails, Olympic super pipes, and resort facilities.

Winter Activities at Alpine Hills Adventure Park
In 2012, the District held a focus group and conducted an online survey to help gather ideas for development plans and provide design ideas for the park. Major interests in the survey were snowboarding, walking trails, tobogganing, and other winter activities. Rockford Park District staff engaged an outside vendor, Rockford Superparks, LLC, to design and operate the park’s winter sports activities. The operator will supply the major equipment (snowmaking machines, surface lift, and snow groomer) to provide the winter activities. The District is responsible for providing the infrastructure necessary for snow making, such as the pump house at the pond, electrical service outlets, some site clearing, ticket/restroom building renovation, improved sidewalk accessibility, and toboggan platform. Rockford Superparks, LLC anticipates the inaugural winter season beginning by Nov. 21, weather dependent. Hours of operation are: Monday through Friday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, holidays, or school cancellation, snow days are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In the spring of 2011, the Hansberger family generously donated Alpine Hills Golf Course to the Rockford Park District Foundation. ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY provides stateline with action-packed racing Rockford Speedway is located on the north side of Rockford in Loves Park on Rt. 173 and Forest Hills Road. The Speedway celebrated their 70th year of operation in 2019, making it Northern Illinois’ oldest professional and continuous sports venue. Since the inaugural season in 1948, the high-banked quarter mile oval has been tabbed as “Mid-America’s Finest Racetrack.” Rich in racing tradition, this reputation has been well earned through hosting major events like the granddaddy of all short track post season events, the National Short Track Championships. This prestigious event has helped launch the careers of the NASCAR stars such as Mark Martin, Dick Trickle, Alan Kulwicki, Ted Musgrave, Rusty Wallace, Rich Bickle, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Travis Kvapil, Jamie McMurray, Todd Kluever, Erik Darnell, and Scott Wimmer. The racing is sanctioned by the National Association of Stock Car Racing, NASCAR. Rockford Speedway participates in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. The divisions that compete at the Rockford Speedway includes: Late Models, All-American Sportsmen, American Short Trackers, Road Runners, Hornets, Winged Women on Wheels and Figure 8’s.
The track also hosts many different touring series as well including: Big 8 Series, Mid-American Series, ASA Late Model Series Northern Division, INEX Legends, INEX Bandeleros, Super Cups, FIRA Mini-Indy, Allison Legacy, Rascal Outlaws and many more. Focused on entertaining the fans, Rockford Speedway’s family-oriented racing schedule is nationally known for its innovative events. The “world famous” trailer races, Eve of Destruction, and Night of Thrills. The Speedway also welcomes different monster trucks and an annual visit from Doug Rose and his Green Mamba Jet Car. Some of the events have been shown on Speed Channel’s “On the Edge” series. The Speedway is a quarter-mile, high-banked, asphalt race track with fanfriendly grandstand seating on both sides. The facility has been used for circuses, concerts, car shows, sporting events, swap meets, outdoor sales and numerous community fundraising events. Six Flags Great America, the Thrill Capital of the Midwest, received the last vote from Rock Valley College in December approving the final of 11 real estate tax abatements on the Magic Waters property. Six Flags Great America now has the necessary approvals to begin managing Magic Waters Waterpark near Rockford, Ill. The leasing agreement officially began on April 1, 2019 and will allow the largest regional theme park company in the world and the largest waterpark operator in North America to bring its unique and innovative brand to Rockford. Magic Waters Waterpark, a 43-acre facility, has been owned and operated by the Rockford Park District since 1988. The park features a wide array of tube slides and body slides, an expansive children’s play area, a 1200 ft. lazy river and Tsunami Bay, Illinois’ largest wave pool. “We are excited to add Magic Waters Waterpark to the Six Flags family of parks and continue to foster a great partnership with the Rockford Park District,” said Six Flags Great America Park President Hank Salemi. “We look forward to the many opportunities we will have with Magic Waters and the community. We can now offer tremendous added value to guests of Magic Waters by including Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor in their Magic Waters Combo Season Passes.” Six Flags Great America plans to begin the hiring process for the newly acquired waterpark in the New Year. “Privatizing Magic Waters Waterpark was something our community told us should be a priority to achieve. I cannot think of a better organization to partner with than Six Flags Great America as they have been outstanding to work with and our mission, vision, and service expectations align. They are the industry experts and will have more resources to invest in the waterpark. “The District will now be able to invest its limited resources into our communities’ priorities for 2019 and beyond such as parks, paths, free family events, and youth,” said Rockford Park District Executive Director Jay Sandine. CORONADO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER: Rockford’s crown jewel The Coronado Performing Arts Center in downtown Rockford opened on Oct. 9, 1927 as an atmospheric style theatre and movie palace - complete with Spanish castles, Italian villas, oriental dragons, starlit skies and a Grande Barton Pipe Organ. Countless show business legends, including the Marx Brothers, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Gypsy Rose Lee have performed on the Coronado stage.
The Coronado was the romantic setting for countless movie-going couples on their first date, and a Saturday outing for kids watching cartoons and movies through 1984. Over the years, the theatre has also played host to high school graduations, political rallies and community events. After decades of use, the grand dame Coronado received a much needed facelift between 1999 and 2001, with the

ROCK CUT STATE PARK offers natural fun for families Chiseled out of the state’s far northern region is Rock Cut State Park in Winnebego County. Nearby are other “rocky” landmarks - the mighty Rock River and the place where wagons once forded it, Rockford. It’s an area of rolling plains, interesting history and recreational variety. Two lakes set off the park’s 3,092 acres. Pierce Lake, with 162 acres, is a retreat for people wanting to fish, ice fish or ice skate. A second 50-acre Olson Lake is especially for swimmers. Rounding out the park’s recreational options are camping, hiking, horseback trails and cross-country skiing. Whatever the season, you can be sure there’s quite a bit of activity going on at Rock Cut State Park.

HISTORY By the middle of the 17th century, Miami-speaking tribes of Native Americans entered the region of Rock Cut State Park after the Iroquois drove them from territory on the southern end of Lake Michigan. From about 1655 until 1735, the Rock River was within the range of the Mascouten, who were also pushed westward by the Iroquois. The Winnebago ranged southward from Wisconsin to the Rock River from the 1740s until 1837, while the river’s upper portion was on the periphery of the Fox and Sauk territory from about 1765 to 1833. By 1800, the Potawatomi, Ottawa and Chippewa nations had extended their range into the area, but they ceded their lands to the United States 32 years later following the Black Hawk War. Settlement of Winnebago County began after the Black Hawk War. The region that is now Rock Cut State Park was settled partly by Scots around Argyle - named for their Scottish home of Argyllshire - and partly by Canadians, New Yorkers and New Englanders around the town of Harlem - named for New York City’s Harlem. The Illinois version of Harlem was moved in 1859 when the KenoshaRockford Rail Line was built. The dammed waters of Pierce Lake now cover much of the railroad bed within the park, although portions of the railroad grade are visible along Willow Creek below the spillway. But blasting operations in a rock outcrop that railroad crews conducted during the 1859 construction left lasting impressions here - they cut through rock to provide a suitable roadbed and gave Rock Cut its name.
THE PARK’S PRESENT Because water serves as a welcome mat to birds and animals, wildlife watchers to the area won’t be disappointed. Birders report good viewing, with waterfowl being abundant. Deer, fox, muskrat, woodchuck and beaver inhabit Rock Cut State Park as do

Pierce Lake will allow any size engine on the lake, however, engines over 10 hp can operate at No Wake speed only. opossum, raccoon and both gray and fox squirrel. Over 100 types of wildflowers offer a showy display each spring and summer, while the hardwood trees dazzle you with their reds and golds every fall.
TRAILS The trail system at Rock Cut offers opportunities for hiking (40 miles), mountain biking (23 miles), and equestrian (14 miles) and has been completely remarked. Trail users will find updated trail head/information signs at picnic areas and trail access points for trail information and regulations. Only certain trails are designated for mountain biking and equestrian use and are identified by colored trail markers. Blue trails are for mountain biking and hiking, yellow trails are for equestrian and hiking and red trails are restricted to hiking only. Trail activities have been divided into “summer and winter” seasons to provide quality seasonal programs. The “summer program” (mountain biking and equestrian) trails are open April 1 – Nov. 30. These regulations for mountain biking and equestrian use will be strictly enforced and violators are subject to fines. The “winter program” provides for groomed cross-country trails as conditions permit. The groomed trails are best accessed at the Lions Club Picnic Area. As a courtesy, hikers and snow shoers are asked to use other trails that have not been groomed for skiing. A winter trail guide is being developed to better describe the trails groomed for classical
skiing and those groomed for freestyle/ skating. Rock Cut also offers access (at the Pierce Lake spillway) to the Willow Creek Bike Trail and Perryville Path, a paved trail system connecting the local communities of Loves Park and Rockford to Rock Cut State Park.
CAMPING For those who want to include an overnight stay in their visit to Rock Cut, the park offers 28 Class A-Premium sites for reservation, 180 Class A-Premium sites and 60 Class B-Premium sites on a first-come first-serve basis. There is also a primitive cabin available for reservation. It has electricity, but does not have water or plumbing facilities. Open year round, the campgrounds provide water, electricity, sanitary dump stations, showers, toilets, a boat launch and playground equipment. Only electricity and pit toilets are available in the winter season. Equestrian camping is restricted to a site on Hart Road. Groups of more than 25 persons need advance permission from the site superintendent before they can enter the park, and all campers require a permit from park personnel. Alcohol is prohibited in the campground.
FISHING, BOATING One of the park’s most popular activities is fishing Pierce Lake named for state Rep. William Pierce of Rockford, who served in the legislature from 1951-1966 and who proposed the first land acquisition for the park in 1955.
Olson Lake Beach will be operated this summer (Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend) by contract of Beachwater Lifeguard & Lake Patrol. The Lake is open from noon to 7 p.m. and the cost is $1 per person. For additional information call 815-8859084. or view their website at www. beachwatch.net
PICNICKING, CONCESSION Knowing that a visit to a state park is more fun when there’s food to be enjoyed, Rock Cut has picnic areas scattered throughout the park. Each is complete with tables, outdoor stoves, and pit toilets. Red Oak and Puri Crest have playgrounds. Check out the newest addition, Lone Rock Cafe features wireless internet, a variety of food items and drinks including smoothies and blended coffees. FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED Several features make Rock Cut State Park accessible to the disabled. Two fishing piers are available, including a covered pier at the Lions Club day use area. The area, which is totally accessible for the disabled, features paved walkways, toilets, and a picnic shelter. The park’s campground area has flush toilets and showers that can be used by disabled visitors. Handicapped parking spaces are located in all of the park’s lots.
WINTER SPORTS Take to the trails in the winter. A winding system of cross-country ski trails lets you take in the park’s winter beauty. There’s more winter fun - ice fishing is a great Rock Cut pastime.

COVERED BRIDGE DAYS in August During the second weekend of August each year, Brodhead hosts a weekend brimming with exciting and interesting activities for everyone, with the theme of “Bridging yesterday with tomorrow.” Recently-added events include the Wildflower Festival, featuring plant tours and educational programs as well as a juried, high quality art festival in downtown Veterans Park; exploring the historic Mill Race by pontoon boat at the new “Embrace the Race” event; and a regional garden tractor expo that brings hundreds of vintage and refurbished garden tractors to town.

East Troy Brewery is located in a historic building on the Historic East Troy Square and is financed by a group of local investors who are passionate about East Troy (and craft beer.) The building dates back to 1892 when it opened as a bank, which was remodeled and expanded over the years. Enjoy a full day of activities at Byron Forest Preserve
The Byron Forest Preserve District is located on the hills along the Rock River in Byron. With its many acres of prairie and woodlands, it is beautiful in every season. It holds miles of walking trails, and provides picnic shelters, a playground, horseback riding, golf, and gorgeous views. Golf course designer James Spear designed the forest preserve’s 18 hole, bentgrass PrairieView Golf Course which provides a challenging game for golfers. Some of its many programs include archery, hunter safety, fishing, camps, beekeeping classes, sky viewing, fossil hunts, canoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, camps, and trips. The Forest Preserve also holds 300 acres of land, through donations and grants, which is a perpetual part of the Illinois Prairie Grass Program. The Weiskopf Observatory with its 11” Celestron reflecting telescope, is available for public viewing and special programs. Weekly public viewing sessions offer experienced staff to guide you through the skies. Public viewing is held on Tuesday and Saturday nights beginning at dark for three hours during the summer months. Public viewing is held only on Saturday nights from August through May. There is no admission fee for public viewing. The Heritage Farm Museum is a restored farm from 1843 when Charlie Wilbur and his family moved from New York to settle in Byron. Visitors can experience what early country life was about. Farm “residents” and chickens are only a couple of experiences visitors can enjoy. The Jarrett Prairie Center holds expanded museum space and offers amazing views of the prairie nature preserve. Exhibits demonstrate prairie ecology and include a new, immersive theater. The Wisconsin Dells, a family fun favorite destination is offering new activities in 2019.
VINE AND STEIN Local, artisanal wineries have become increasingly popular travel destinations, and the Dells area, in particular, has become a magnet for wine lovers. Home to five wineries – including the state’s oldest and largest, Wollersheim Winery & Distillery – it is also home to the state’s newest. Set to open this spring, Broken Bottle Winery will temporarily source its grapes from the vineyard of parent Baraboo Bluff Winery while its own vineyard fully takes root. The winery will feature two indoor bars, plus a large front porch for sipping outside. Wisconsin Dells also will welcome a new premium wine bar in the historic downtown area this summer. In addition to wine, Kilbourn Cork will also feature single-malt whiskies, small-batch bourbons and other handmade spirits, as well as local and regional craft brews and seasonal small plate selections – not to mention an outdoor fire pit. Beer aficionados will find a new microbrewery in the Wisconsin Dells area in 2019. Tumbled Rock Brewery & Kitchen, nestled in the hills near Devil’s Lake State Park, is a family-friendly restaurant and brewery boasting a wood-fired oven, pizzas and pub food. Its stouts, witbiers and IPAs are brewed in-house. For a little caffeine to balance the libations, guests can visit Bella Goose Coffee’s new roastery located downtown Dells on Eddy Street. Customers can tour the roastery, participate in coffee tasting events and purchase freshly roasted coffee beans. Bella Goose creates a craft coffee experience with pour over coffee, seasonal smoothies and juices, and their signature waffle bar complete with toppings.

Circus World is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019. This national treasure, located on the original Ringling Bros. Circus Winter Quarters in nearby Baraboo, first rose to fame in the 1960s so it’s especially fitting the attraction is going with “A Summer of Luv Under the Big Top” theme for 2019 with a nod to mod fashion and classic rock.

INNOVATIVE FUN The Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort - America’s Largest Waterpark Resortcontinues to add fun to its indoor inventory with a trio of rock-climbing walls to their Timberland Playhouse area. The three vary in difficulty and design, giving visitors a wide range of challenges. The addition of Booby Trap Escape Rooms is a fun attraction for an afternoon of family bonding, a date night or a birthday party. Along the same lines of live-action, Dells Game Show & Comedy Club allows you to compete against family and friends in a series of mini-games themed to trivia, puzzles and physical challenges. It’s one hour of fun where you get to be the star of the show. While ice skating outside year-round doesn’t sound plausible even in Wisconsin, the owners of The Keg Bar & Grill/The Patio have made it a reality with their new, 300-square-foot, synthetic ice rink called I-Skate @ The Keg. The rink is open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day with reduced hours in the fall and winter. Skate rentals are available. Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park brings a one-of-a-kind attraction to Wisconsin Dells with its Underworld Go-Carts which take riders underground, a nice complement to their Hades 360 roller coaster featuring the world’s longest underground roller coaster tunnel.
TOURNAMENT GOLF COURSES Wild Rock Golf Club at the Wilderness was been selected by the United States Golf Association to host a qualifying round for the 2019 U.S. Open on May 8. This magnificent 18-hole course, built on a former quarry, was designed by HurdzanFry, the same duo who created Erin Hills, site of last year’s U.S. Open. The course incorporates an old stone quarry and a woodland area with a stream, as well as extreme elevation changes. Many holes play up and down the sandstone ridges, for which the Dells is famous, and offer views of the quartzite cliffs of the Baraboo Range. A memorable 9-hole course can be found in nearby Baraboo, adjacent to Ho-Chunk Gaming. Fairfield Hills Golf Course & Driving Range offers golfers the chance to play 3, 9, 12, or 18 holes. Recognizing that many golfers may not have enough time for a full 18-hole round, Fairfield Hills is one of the few Midwestern courses with a 12-hole option. This unique course was awarded the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin’s 2018 “Golf Course of the Year” ranking in the 9-hole category.
ANNIVERSARIES AND EXPANSIONS Noah’s Ark Waterpark, America’s largest outdoor waterpark, turned 40 this year with an anniversary bash on the books for Memorial Day weekend plus a full summer of special events to mark the occasion. The Brodhead Historical Society’s Depot Museum is another great site for visitors hoping to get a glimpse into Brodhead’s past. Artifacts, photographs, and documents from Brodhead’s past fill the museum. Some of the recent displays added include vintage cheese making equipment from the Brodhead area and Green County Cheese factories, musical instruments, broom-making equipment, and displays from early Brodhead businesses. The museum is open from May through September on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Admission is free.
