Owners, Tony and Esther Zgraggen immigrated in the 1980’s to the United States from Switzerland. At that time they had a Dairy farm and for 5 years took cheese to the farmers market in Madison. After being absent from the Dairy industry for several years, they found the way back to the “cheese” with the purchase of the Alp and Dell Cheese Store in April 2009.

The Alp and Dell Cheese Store is located in Green County, the Heart of Wisconsin’s Dairy and Cheese Industry. Green County has about 400 Dairy farms producing 530 million pounds of milk annually.

Luecke Jewelers: Providing Monroe Furniture Center beautiful gifts since 1921 will make your home

In July of 1987, Jerry and Paula Beckman purchased the assets of the Furniture Outlet Center, Inc., a Rockford, Ill. based company, with the intent to give consumers in the stateline area a locally owned and operated option of obtaining quality home furnishings at pricing found in much larger markets.

That first location was one block east of Monroe’s downtown square in the building that previously housed Gibson’s Discount Store, Disch Furniture & Appliance Store and Furniture Outlet Center, Inc. The building now houses The Monroe Professional Center. Monroe Furniture Center ran its operation out of that building from July 1987 until March 31, 1994. During that time, MFC remerchandised and began re-marketing the operation.

On April 1, 1994, Monroe Furniture Center moved its operation 3 blocks away to the former home of McClellan’s Dime Store, 1 block north of Monroe’s downtown square. While in that location, Monroe Furniture Center expanded its operation with the addition of many of the furniture industry’s largest suppliers, such as: Lane, Flexsteel, Broyhill and others. Also in in that location, MFC opened the first leather furniture gallery in the stateline area. A 4,000 square ft. showroom dedicated entirely to quality leather furniture.

As MFC continued its pattern of growth in the 1990’s, an opportunity presented itself to once again expand its operation. In August of 1997, MFC purchased the assets of Jim’s Furniture and Pool Tables on Hwy 11 in downtown Brodhead, Wis. Jim Tearman had run his store in Brodhead for over 20 years and had been in the furniture business for more than 40 years. This now gave MFC an opportunity to expand its operation to the east and better serve consumers in Rock County, Wis. and Winnebago County, Ill. The move to Brodhead proved to be a good one for MFC. Customers in the Janesville, Beloit, Rockton, Roscoe and South Beloit areas received the way MFC ran its operation very well. Through the end of the 1990’s, both MFC locations continued to grow at a rate that was out of the ordinary for most stores in the furniture industry.

As the new millennium progressed, it became obvious that in order to continue to give consumers in the stateline area the quality products and service that they had come to expect from MFC, another expansion had become necessary.

Early in 2004, MFC broke ground on a new facility on Monroe’s west side. In late November of 2004 MFC moved into it new facility. The new facility in Monroe is state-of-the-art; the first in the stateline area to offer furniture galleries from some of the largest manufacturers in the industry today.

MFC offers a 7,000 sq. ft. Lane gallery, a 7,500 sq. ft. Broyhill gallery, a 4,000 sq. ft. Flexsteel gallery and a 40 bed mattress gallery. The overall facility exceeds 40,000 sq. ft. MFC is constantly trying to improve its operations to better serve the furniture consumers of the stateline area.

That said, in the fall of 2006, MFC changed its Brodhead operation into the largest furniture clearance center in the stateline area, now offering customers value pricing on close-out and one-of-a-kind merchandise. Monroe Furniture Center has had a long and successfully history, but is always looking to the future for ways to better serve its customers in the stateline area. The term “family business” has special meaning for sisters Alicia Luecke-DeMichele and Marcia Luecke-Toepfer. Together they run three jewelry stores, the flagship location in Freeport having been established by their grandfather, Robert G. Luecke, in 1921.

The family connection to Freeport’s historic downtown business district dates back even further, however. Robert began his jeweler’s work in a corner of the Blust Dry Goods Store inside a building erected by his father-in-law, E.A. Blust, at 10 E. Main St., Freeport. The Blust Building, built in 1892, remains an iconic downtown landmark.

“Once the dry goods business fizzled, Grandpa (Robert G. Luecke) took over the building and set up Luecke Jewelers in 1921,” explains Alicia. “My grandma Margaret did a lot of the bookkeeping and other work. Watch repair was a big deal at that time, and they had two repair people onsite.”

The jewelry business was still going strong when Robert welcomed his son, Charles M., to the shop in 1955. In coming decades, Charles M. would oversee the expansion of Luecke Jewelers to five times its original size, adding stores in Monroe, Wis. and Belvidere, Ill. Today, at age 85, he still works in the stores a few days a week.

“He does all the estate and antique jewelry sorting and pricing,” says Alicia. “He loves it.”

Charles’ two daughters and three sons learned about jewelry and watch repair by observing their dad and grandfather at work.

“Dad would bring all five of us to the shop on Sunday afternoons, to give my mom some peace and quiet, and we’d work around the store and observe Dad and Grandpa at their workbenches,” recalls Alicia.

There was plenty of incentive for the children to cooperate during these Sunday outings. “If we behaved well, we got to go to the Union Dairy afterward for ice cream.”

Downtown Freeport remains as important to the Luecke family now as it was in 1921. “Our family has owned the building for more than 100 years, which is pretty rare,” says Alicia. “We take great pride in being in downtown Freeport for that reason.”

On the second floor of the Blust Building, above the jewelry store, the family operates

Luecke’s Antique Mall, which brims with fine vintage home furnishings and much more.

Of Charles M.’s five children, daughters Marcia and Alicia, and son Charles G., showed the most interest in the family business. When Charles M. decided to set up a second location – in Monroe, WI, in 1981- he brought in Marcia and Charles G. to run it. “By then we’d been pulling a lot of customers from Monroe to Freeport, so it made sense to open a Monroe location,” Alicia explains. That store is on the historic Monroe Square, at 1029 16th Ave. Seven years later, Charles M. groomed daughter Marcia to take over management of the Freeport location; Alicia took over the Monroe store. Charles G. does appraisal work in all three stores.

The family never thought of expanding its operation to Belvidere, until it was approached by citizens from that city who said they’d been without a locally owned jewelry store for too long.

“We did the research, then opened in 2012 in Winter Plaza, a strip mall on State Street in Belvidere,” explains Alicia. “Marcia oversees that store as well as the Freeport store.” Today the Belvidere store is at 1444 N. State St. The family members work together as well.

“We’ve been lucky, over time,” says Alicia. “We all get along well. Everybody meshes and helps each other out. I know that’s not the case in every family business, but, for us, it works. Strong communication is important. We trust each other.”

And trust is really the cornerstone of a successful jewelry business, says Alicia.

“A locally owned jewelry store – one that has some longevity and a strong reputation in its community – offers something that big-box type jewelers just can’t,” she says. “We offer a level of comfort. People feel comfortable with us handling their items. They feel good about the long-lasting relationship developed with us over the years, as they bring in pieces for cleanings and repair. They like knowing that we’ll be here for the long haul. They know we won’t steer them in the wrong direction

‘The Night Before Christmas’ originated in 1823 “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837.

The poem has been called “arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American” and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the midnineteenth century to today. It has had a massive impact on the history of Christmas gift-giving. Before the poem gained wide popularity, American ideas had varied considerably about Saint Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors. “A Visit from St. Nicholas” eventually was set to music and has been recorded by many artists.

adds new magical experiences in its seventh year An expanded holiday parade, refreshed attractions, new vendors and more live entertainment highlight event The Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to announce that the seventh annual Stroll on State, presented by Illinois Bank & Trust, is set to return on Saturday, Nov. 30 in downtown Rockford.

This year, the Stroll on State team, along with partners, volunteers and sponsors are planning, working and giving because seven hours matter.

During the event, from 2 to 9 p.m., there will be new enhancements, attractions, live entertainment, vendors and more for eventgoers to enjoy.

The free community event, which is always held the Saturday after Thanksgiving in downtown Rockford, attracted more than 87,500 guests last year.

“As we approach Stroll on State’s seventh year in the Rockford region, I am awestruck at just how much this event continues to evolve with the help of so many. Each year, I am reminded that our community is filled with so many selfless, big-hearted people and businesses who help our RACVB team put on this amazing event,” said Tana Vettore, RACVB’s director of destination development.

“The magic of the season shines through our downtown during Stroll and brings people together in a variety of ways.

To accommodate growing crowds and to allow guests additional vantage points from which to view the stage, the Main Stage, sponsored by Gallagher WilliamsManny is moving to the southwest corner of Wyman and State Streets (just west of the former location). There will be special moments to enjoy and guests are encouraged to sing together and count down to the official tree lighting. Watch for Santa as he makes a special appearance during the music production beginning at 5:45 and count down to the tree lighting beginning approximately at 6:15 p.m.

1. Stroll on State’s Holiday Parade starts at 2 p.m.

The Stroll Parade has expanded this year adding even more attractions and fun surprises! Stroll on State’s Holiday Parade, presented by The Power Connection – IBEW 364 & NECA, will step off on South Main Street at Chestnut Street at 2 p.m. and stroll north to State Street and then east across the State Street Bridge, ending at 3rd Street.

Parade onlookers are encouraged to find a spot along the route starting at 1 p.m.

The parade will feature eight large-scale holiday-themed and character balloons – including Buddy the Dinosaur and Butterscotch the Elf, several festive floats, live music, DJs and a few extra surprises.

Calling for Parade Entries: Local organizations and businesses are invited to participate in the parade. The parade committee is pleased to provide commercially prepared floats for rental and use. Santa & Mrs. Claus coming to Beloit’s Grand Lighted Holiday Parade Now in its 27th year, the Grand Lighted Holiday Parade, hosted by Downtown Beloit Association, continues to bring delight to families, children, and kids at heart!

The Grand Lighted Holiday Parade offers an impressive schedule of events and attracts thousands of local community members and visitors alike. University of Illinois Extension shares Christmas Tree facts Great Moments in Christmas Tree History The use of evergreen trees to celebrate the winter season occurred before the birth of Christ.

The first decorated Christmas tree was in Riga, Latvia in 1510.

The first printed reference to Christmas trees appeared in Germany in 1531.

Besides evergreens, other types of trees such as cherry and hawthorns were used as Christmas trees in the past.

Using small candles to light a Christmas tree dates back to the middle of the 17th century.

Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, came up with the idea of electric lights for Christmas trees in 1882. Christmas tree lights were first mass-produced in 1890.

In 1900, large stores started to erect big illuminated Christmas trees.

The tradition of an official Chicago Christmas tree was initiated in 1913 when one was first lit by Mayor Carter H. Harrison in Grant Park.

The official Christmas tree tradition at Rockefeller Center began in 1933. Since 2004 the tree has been topped with a 550-pound Swarovski Crystal star. And since 2007, the tree has been lit with 30,000 energy-efficient LED’s which are powered by solar panels.

Every year since 1947, the people of Oslo, Norway have given a Christmas tree to the city of Westminster, England. The gift is an expression of good will and gratitude for Britain’s help to Norway during World War II. Since 1971, the Province of Nova Scotia has presented the Boston Christmas tree to the people of Boston, in gratitude for the relief supplies received from the citizens of Boston after a ship exploded in 1917 following a collision in the Halifax, Nova Scotia Harbor.

Part of the city was leveled, killing and injuring thousands.

Presidential Christmas Trees In 1856 Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States, was the first President to place a Christmas tree in the White House.

President Coolidge started the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the White House lawn in 1923.

Teddy Roosevelt banned the Christmas tree from the White House for environmental reasons.

From 1948 to 1951, President Truman spent Christmas at his home in Independence, Missouri, and lit the National Community Christmas Tree by remote control. Truman

agreed to stay at the White House for Christmas 1952, and personally lit the tree.

In 1963, the National Christmas Tree was not lit until December 22nd, because of a national 30-day period of mourning following the assassination of President Kennedy.

Since 1966, the National Christmas Tree Association has given a Christmas tree to the President and first family for display in the Blue Room.

In 1979, the National Christmas Tree was not lit except for the top ornament. This was done to honor the American hostages in Iran.

In 1984, the National Christmas tree was lit on December 13 with temperatures in the 70’s, making it one of the warmest tree lightings in history.

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, and Elsewhere Nineteenth century Americans cut their trees in nearby forests. Today most real Christmas trees are grown on farms as sustainable crops like corn or pumpkins.

98 percent of all Christmas trees are grown on farms, while only 2% are cut from the wild.

To ensure enough trees for harvest, growers plant one to three seedlings for every tree harvested.

In 2012, 46 million Christmas tree seedlings were planted by U.S. growers.

More than 2,000 trees are usually planted per acre. On average 1,000-1,500 of these trees will survive. In the northern part of the country, perhaps 750 trees will remain.

Almost all trees require shearing to attain the Christmas tree shape. At six to seven feet, trees are ready for harvest.

It takes six to ten years of fighting heavy rain, wind, hail and drought to get a mature tree.

Most Christmas trees are cut weeks before they get to a retail outlet. It is important to keep them watered thoroughly when they reach your home. In the first week, a Christmas tree in your home will consume as much as a quart of water per day.

Is It or Isn’t It? Artificial Christmas trees were developed in Germany during the 19th century and later became popular in the United States. These “trees” were made using goose feathers that were dyed green and attached to wire branches. The wire branches were then wrapped around a central dowel rod that acted as the trunk.

In 1930 the U.S.-based Addis Brush Company created the first artificial Christmas

tree made from brush bristles. The company used the same machinery that it used to manufacture toilet brushes, but they were dyed green.

Artificial Christmas trees made largely from aluminum were manufactured in the United States, first in Chicago in 1958.

Today, most artificial Christmas trees are made from PVC plastic. PVC trees are fireretardant but not fire-resistant. Eighty percent of artificial trees worldwide are manufactured in China.

10.9 million artificial trees were purchased in the United States in 2012.

To Market to Market Live Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850.

The first Christmas tree retail lot in the United States was started by Mark Carr in New York, in 1851.

From 1887-1933 a fishing schooner called the “Christmas Ship” would tie up at the Clark Street Bridge in Chicago and sell spruce trees from Michigan to Chicagoans.

In 2012, 35% of real Christmas trees sold were from chain stores or garden centers/ nursery, 24% from cut and harvest farms, 15% from retail tree lots, and 15% from non-profit groups.

In 2012, 85% of the Christmas trees purchased were pre-cut, and 14% were cutyour-own.

An estimated 175,000 real Christmas trees are sold via e-commerce or catalogue and shipped mail order.

The most popular Christmas trees are: Scotch pine, Douglas fir, noble fir, Fraser fir, balsam fir, Virginia pine and white pine.

Christmas trees are baled to protect the branches from damage during shipping.

Helicopters help to lift harvested Christmas trees from farms.

The United States of Trees In the United States, there are more than 15,000 Christmas tree farms.

There are approximately 350 million Christmas trees growing on U.S. farms.

Approximately 100,000 people are employed full or part-time in the Christmas tree industry.

24.5 million farm-grown Christmas trees were purchased in the United States in 2012, with a real market value of $1.01 billion.

The mean average purchase price of a live tree in 2012 was $41.30.

Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan,

Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Washington, New York, and Virginia are the top Christmas tree producing states.

350,000 acres of land in the United States are in production for growing Christmas trees.

Christmas trees are grown and harvested in all 50 states.

Michigan ranks third among all states in the production of real Christmas trees, but grows a larger variety of Christmas trees than any other state.

Make Your Christmas Really Green 93% of real Christmas tree consumers recycle their tree in community recycling programs, their garden or backyard.

In the United States, there are more than 4,000 Christmas tree recycling programs.

Recycled real Christmas trees have been used to make sand and soil erosion barriers and been placed in ponds for fish shelter.

Growing Christmas trees provides a habitat for wildlife.

Christmas trees can remove dust and pollen from the air.

Cook County, IL uses old Christmas trees to rebuild housing structures for natural wildlife that has been destroyed through development.

Artificial trees will last for six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill.

An acre of Christmas trees provides the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people.

You should not burn your Christmas tree in the fireplace; it can contribute to creosote buildup.

Live Christmas trees are involved in less than one-tenth of one percent of residential fires, and mostly when ignited by some external ignition sources. The major factors involved in Christmas tree fires are electrical problems, decorative lights, candles, and a heat source too close to the tree.

In 1971 the government concluded that Christmas tree tinsel made of lead was a health risk and convinced manufacturers to voluntarily stop producing lead tinsel. It is now made of plastic.

it drew more than 3,400 entries—a record, up 15% from two years ago— from 27 countries (including the U.S.) and 32 states. The event was held in Madison, Wis., March 6–8, 2018, with the winners announced at the final evening’s Cheese Champion event.

While Wisconsin could not duplicate its success from two years ago when Emmi Roth USA’s alpine-style Grand Cru Surchoix won the World Cheese Championship, Wisconsin and the U.S. did not come away empty-handed.

American cheesemakers had seven of the top 20 finalists, and five of them were from Wisconsin. Two of the finalists were made in Antigo, Wis.,

by Plymouth-based Sartori Company; the rest were a mild Cheddar by Maple Leaf Cheese in Monroe, a cave-aged mixed-milk cheese from Fond du Lac County, and a mild Gouda from Manitowoc County.

All told, Wisconsin won Best of Class in 46 categories, with 129 total awards (first, second or third) to win the overall medal count.

Byron’s ‘Operation Santa’ program underway Byron Police Department’s Operation Santa Claus has been making Christmas a little brighter for the less fortunate children in the Byron community for the past 29 years. Byron Kiwanis has been partnering with the police department for eleven years, hosting Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus where all toy and monetary donations are given to Operation Santa.

Operation Santa continues to succeed with the dedicated volunteers and thrives on the generosity of our community members. Through this program, over 4,850 children have received gifts at Christmas The majority of the donated new toys are for the younger children (birth to 6 years old) in the program. Donations for children ages 7-14 is encouraged.

If you don’t have time to shop, 100 percent of the money donated is used to purchase gifts for the older children and wrapping supplies. Donation checks, payable to Operation Santa Claus, can be dropped off at or mailed to the Byron Police Department, PO Box 923, Byron, IL 61010.

Operation Santa also appreciates donations of new Christmas wrapping paper and scotch tape. These are provided to families so the parents can participate in the gift-giving.

Byron Kiwanis is hosting “Breakfast with Santa & Mrs. Claus” on December 7 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Cafeteria of Mary Morgan Elementary School. There is no entry , but a donation of one new, unwrapped toy per child, or monetary donation is appreciated.

Parents or guardians of children (up to age 14) in the Byron area who would benefit from the Operation Santa Claus program are asked to come to the Police Department, 232 W. Second St., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to register. Parents will be asked to provide proof of address, the children’s names, ages, and gender. Names must be submitted no later than Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Volunteer Workshops are held Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Tuesday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. at 310 Winnebago Street, on the corner of Winnebago and Chestnut Streets. Children ages 12-15 may volunteer with an adult and a signed waiver; 16- and 17-year-olds must provide a signed waiver.

Volunteers are welcome to come to the workshops without prior registration.

Workshops end on Tuesday, November 19.

SBA small business lending reflects strong economic trends The U.S. Small Business Administration announced FY19 lending numbers showing that it guaranteed over $28 billion to entrepreneurs that otherwise would not have access to capital to start, grow, or expand their small businesses.

“A strong economy is powering America’s 30 million small businesses, and the SBA’s FY19 numbers bear that out,” SBA Acting Administrator Chris Pilkerton said. “When the economy is doing well, 7(a) lenders are more willing to provide capital without the need for a federal loan guarantee. Our 504 and Microloan programs continued to grow from last year, as all of these loans are designed to create jobs and grow all small businesses in communities across the country. We continue to be proud that the SBA is here to help America start, grow, and expand opportunities for entrepreneurs.”

In FY19, SBA’s flagship 7(a) loan program made approximately 52,000 7(a) loans totaling $23.17 billion. The 504 loan program had another year of increased performance, with more than 6,000 loans made for a total dollar amount of more than $4.9 billion.

“With a strong economy and historically solid small business optimism, we know that 7(a) lenders are making loans

conventionally without the SBA guarantee.

We also saw a 4.3% growth in the 504 loan program due to the longer term and low fixed interest rate that the product provides to small businesses,” said Associate Administrator for SBA’s Office of Capital Access William Manger. “We are also proud that our Microloan program had another record year with a nearly 7.5% increase in small business lending.”

In FY19, there was significant growth of dollars lent in the SBA’s Microloan program, with more than 5,500 loans approved for nearly $81.5 million.

In addition to the strong lending numbers, the SBA continues to innovate and improve processes by leveraging enhanced technologies. Lender Match is an SBA technology platform that gives entrepreneurs the ability to complete a quick online form, without registration or cost to the user to connect with an SBAapproved lender within 48 hours. To date, Lender Match has generated 4.4 million leads on behalf of small businesses to our lenders, and lenders have contacted more than 230,000 unique borrowers with financing options.
