ishing is one of the most popular recreational pursuits in North America. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says around 40 million people fish each year. Fishing can be an ideal way to spend time in the great outdoors, and people often bond with family and friends while fishing.

As any angler can attest, there’s a rush that comes from getting a small tug on the line and then reeling in a fish. At this point, fishermen must decide if the fish is a keeper or should be tossed back into the water.

Sometimes the answer is very clear.

Rivers and lakes across the world are managed by various organizations that serve to protect wildlife and natural resources. Rules may be in place regarding the sizes of fish that can be kept, which species are safe and which are protected, and even when people can fish.

In a study led by researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey that was published

in the journal Fisheries, thousands of distinct populations of fish were studied.

Researchers determined that as many as four out of 10 freshwater species in North America are in danger of approaching extinction. As a result, fishing is regulated

by Fish and Wildlife officers and game wardens.

Those who are new to fishing or to a particular region must learn and follow the rules regarding fishing. Fishing licenses are typically required to fish in a given state or area. Always speak with a licensing agency about size restrictions and any other rules regarding species of fish. Also learn about which methods of fishing are legal. Drag nets or other methods of mass fish collection or luring the fish with lights or other equipment may be prohibited.

Learning how to safely catch and release fish if the need arises also is an essential component of responsible fishing. When done correctly, catch-andrelease methods can ensure high survival

rates and preserve native fish populations.

The National Park Service advises those who fish to follow these tips: • Avoid fishing when conditions are stressful for fish, such as when water temperatures are high; • Use equipment that enables one to land the fish quickly without struggle; • Avoid the use of scents and artificial baits that encourage fish to swallow hooks.

Learn which bait are prohibited in certain bodies of water. Artificial lures that hook the fish in the lip are preferred; • Avoid playing with the fish to exhaustion; and • Keep the fish wet and calm, and treat it gently to remove the hook. Hold the fish underwater and allow it to ventilate before release so it can regain its swimming strength.

According to their website, the Aquaducks first started skiing on Browns Lake in 1976 and have been there ever since.

Over the years, the club has performed at Bartlett’s All Star Show, been pictured in Water Ski Magazines and on ESPN National TV. The team has claimed multiple state and national championships, both as a team and for individual aspects of the show.

Many of the club’s native members have continued their skiing on Collegiate Water Ski Teams – Cypress Gardens in Florida, Sea World and Marine World – while others have performed stunts in movies and on television. Some members have skied all over the world ranging from California to West Germany, a passion that all began from Brown’s Lake.

Capitalizing on the kayak craze

While the sport of kayaking has been popular for the past couple of decades, Fox River Paddle Sport owner Sherri Mertz said the advent of less expensive kayaks available has brought a while new crop of people to the sport.

The ability to pick up an inexpensive kayak just about anywhere has piqued the interest of many and Mertz said she’s seen more and more people enjoying the sport. But there is a downside to influx of newcomers to the sport.

“This new business model, where boats are being sold all over presents a challenge,” Mertz said. “People are purchasing boats with no expertise or advice. They don’t get information about the limitations of the boats and where and where not they should be used.”

Mertz said kayaking is a great “beginner” sport, but it’s not something, in her opinion, that people should just jump into without some type of training.

“Unless they have some previous experience in kayaking, I would strongly recommend they seek out some instruction,” she said. “Kayaking isn’t something that takes a great deal to get started, but it is important. You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Mertz said taking one or two classes would be enough.

“It’s not the type of thing where you need 12 weeks of classes or anything like that,” she said.

She said people should be careful where they get their information about the sport.

“There are some great books out there they can read, but I caution from getting all your information from the internet.

Someone who’s perhaps a novice would find it difficult to sort out what they’re reading. Find a reliable source.”

“They’re the premier paddle sports organization in the United States and are responsible for certifying hundreds if not thousands of instructors across the county,” she said. “You can go on the website and locate an instructor in your area, mine and others. There are a lot of instructors in southeast Wisconsin.”

Family friendly Mertz said paddle sports are familyfriendly activities and kids ages 3 and older are welcome with their parents/guardians.

“We have kid-sized life jackets so they can be fitted properly and everyone can enjoy the day,” Mertz said. “ Paddling away Mertz has been teaching kayaking and

paddle sports for more than a two decades and in 2009 opened her own teaching business – SherriKayaks Outdoor Programs LLC – also owns and operates Fox River Paddle Sports.

“It’s been enjoyable,” she said. “It’s nice working for yourself and I have a wonderful staff. They’re just a great group of kids and a joy to work with.

Along with two Paddle Sports rental locations – Waterford and Wind Lake – Mertz teaches classes all through the season.

“We offer kayak, canoe and standup paddle boards at both our Wind Lake and Waterford locations, which are very beginner friendly locations. And if someone is really intimidated, I have classes available for all levels,” Mertz said.

The Wind Lake launch is new this year, with Mertz setting up shop behind the

Sportman’s Resort at 25313 W. Loomis Road.

“We’re giving it a try, the owner asked me to do it and we’ll see how it goes,” Mertz said. “We alternate between the Waterford and Wind Lake locations during the week, one of them is always open, and both are open on the weekends. It seems to be going well.”

The original Fox River Paddle Sports is located in Village Hall Park directly behind the Waterford Village Hall at 123 N. River St., just steps from the public canoe/kayak launch below the dam.

Promoting the Fox River Water Trail Group looks to get word out about new initiative

A pair of kayakers make their way south along the Fox River near Waterford, last summer. A group promoting the Fox River Water Trail unveiled a website and promotional materials in spring, providing information on boat launches, portages and other amenities along the 200-mile river trail from Waukesha, to Ottawa, Illinois.

Organizers unveiled the Fabulous Fox! River Water Trail website in spring in an effort to tout the recreational opportunities associated with the river corridor in the area.

The Core Development Team, representing Wisconsin and Illinois, was present at a summit in Burlington, last month to raise the curtain on a new website with interactive segment maps of the more than 200-mile water trail.

Visitors will find an overview of the water trail from its headwaters in Waukesha, to its confluence with the Illinois River in Ottawa, Illinois, according to the development team.

Paddlers planning an excursion can find access site descriptions, river miles, hazards, dams and portages, as well as amenities such as drinking water, shelter, restroom and picnic facilities, and boat rentals. The site also includes links to the area tourism entities to help paddlers with dining, shopping, and lodging information and a schedule of events and activities for a full planning resource.

The development team also shared the new brochure, which tells the story of the trail development with a map and features

of the trail. The team is planning to enlist a distribution company to stock tourist outlets such as hotels, transportation hubs, and attractions along the Milwaukee-Chicago corridor.

Funding needed The team is seeking funding for the distribution of 50,000 brochures. Donations can be sent to Karen Miller, Illinois cochairwoman, at 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, IL 60134 Tom Slawski, development team member and organizer of the Fox River Summit wrote a successful grant proposal to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Surface Waters Grant to create the website and printed materials educating the public about the Fox River, the water trail, and stewardship of the river. To distinguish the trail from the Wisconsin Fox River, the team chose the alliterative Fabulous Fox River Water Trail to name the trail.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning on your boat

Boating is a rewarding hobby that allows people to spend ample time on the water enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and boating might go hand in hand, but a danger may be lurking in the air on or around boats that can put boaters’ health in jeopardy.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, carbon monoxide, or CO, can accumulate anywhere in or around a boat.

Inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and blocked exhaust outlets are just two places where CO can accumulate. Exhaust also can get trapped in enclosed places, potentially leading to the accumulation of CO. Fortunately, the USCG notes that CO poisoning is entirely preventable. Routine maintenance and attentive boat ownership can protect boaters and their passengers from the threat posed by CO poisoning.

Seek medical help and shut off potential sources of CO, if possible. Do not write these symptoms off as simple seasickness.

Err on the side of caution, even if you’re unsure if CO poisoning is the culprit.

What are symptoms of CO poisoning?

Protect yourself and others from CO

Irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness are some of the early symptoms of CO poisoning. These are easily and often mistaken as seasickness when on a boat. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be addressed immediately.

People experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a fresh air environment, observed and given oxygen, if necessary.

The USCG recommends all boaters learn where and how CO can accumulate on their boats. Maintain fresh air circulation throughout the boat at all times, running exhaust blowers whenever the generator is operating.

When hosting others on their boats, boaters should make sure everyone steers clear of engine and generator exhaust outlets. Boaters and their guests should

What are the dangers of CO poisoning?

CO is produced when carbon-based fuels burn. Such fuels include gasoline, charcoal or oil, so boat engines are not the only potential source of CO poisoning on a boat.

Gas generators, cooking ranges and space and water heaters also pose a threat.

Farnham agreed to lend his experience, and the group asked Tornes to meet with them and Tom Slawski, of Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission and summit organizer. The group received a grant for technical assistance from the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program.

To ensure that the trail has been fully vetted, the team will hold public engagement workshops in six locations along the river trail in the spring and summer. Locations and dates will be

announced soon on the website and through local media outlets.

The workshops, open to the public, will invite all interested parties to view the maps, the access sites, and segment descriptions and offer feedback. The team will be looking for data that may have been missed and suggestions for improvements as the team prepares a gap analysis.

Interactive experience From the start, the group intended to conclude the trail development with an application to be added to the list of 20 water trails in the National Water Trail System. After several years of collecting and documenting access sites, paddling the river to identify hazards, dams, and portages, and on land to document parking and site amenities, the information has been incorporated into the website and interactive maps.

Scores of volunteers hit the waterway to collect the information and take photos, all in preparation for the interactive maps, providing paddlers with the information to create a safe and pleasant paddling experience.

The team grew with the technical and planning help of Rick Kania of the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission at the urging of Waukesha, Racine, and Kenosha County executives.

In Illinois, Brian Daly of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning joined the team to provide the same help.

As the development team looked beyond the collection of data to promoting the trail, it looked to the marketing expertise of convention and visitors bureaus to promote the river trail in their communities. Jaki Berggren of Visit McHenry in Illinois, and Dave Blank of Real Racine in Wisconsin joined the team representing tourism agencies along the waterway.
