Alcohol boating THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK Almost half of all boating accidents involve alcohol. That should be reason enough to leave alcohol consumption for when you are safely ashore with no plans to travel.

Operating a boat while intoxicated is a federal offense, subject to a $1,000 fine. In addition, criminal penalties are as high as $5,000, and may even include jail time. State Boating Under the influence laws are becoming more stringent too. In most states, the standards for determining whether an individual is intoxicated matches its state

highway laws for operating a vehicle.

Wisconsin law prohibits anyone from operating a motorboat or manipulating water skis or similar devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Anyone who operates or attempts to operate a vessel is deemed to have given consent to an alcohol and/or drug test.

It is illegal for a person to operate a motorboat or use water skis, a surfboard, or other device if he or she: • Is under the influence of an intoxicant or a controlled substance; or • Has a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or greater.

BOAT SAFELY – IT COULD MEAN YOUR LIFE In the most recent year with complete data, the U.S. Coast Guard reports that there were 4062 recreational boating accidents in the United States and its territories in which 626 lives were lost and 2,620 were injured.

Almost 76 percent of the fatal accident victims drowned, and of these, 85 percent were reported as not wearing a life jacket.

Eight out of every 10 boaters who drowned were using boats less than 21 feet in length.

Boating while intoxicated is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 17 percent of the deaths. Operators with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent (for most of us, that

means just one to three beers) are 10 times as likely to be killed in a boating accident as a sober boater.

Additional contributing factors for deaths were hazardous waters, operator inattention, weather, operator inexperience, excessive speed, improper lookout, drug use, navigation rules violation, sharp turn, restricted vision, failure to vent, and inadequate onboard navigation lights.

The American Boating Association encourages every boater to be serious about boating safety, starting with the proper kind and amount of boater training. Remember, a boating mishap or fatality often involves

innocent people who share in none of the blame, but all of the consequence.

As a responsible boater, the life you save may very well be someone else’s. Remember, BE SAFE and know your:

Stressors, such as exposure to noise, vibration, sun, glare, wind and the motion of the water, affects boat operators and passengers, thus making drinking while boating even more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Research shows that hours of exposure to boating stressors produces a kind of a fatigue, or “boater’s hypnosis” which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol or drugs to boating stress-factors intensifies their affects – each drink multiplies your accident risk.

Find ‘Something to Crow About!’ at the fair

The 95th annual Racine County Fair promises to be “Something to Crow About” with big-name entertainment acts and all the fun that comes with the festival.

The fair runs July 25 to 29 on the county fairgrounds at 19805 Durand Ave., Union Grove. Hours are 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. July 25 to 28 and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 29.

With a focus on local agriculture and farming, the fair puts the spotlight on animals raised by area youth and other farming attractions from local kids and adults.

Add to that all the traditional fun that goes along with the festival, including a carnival, games, petting zoo, daily entertainment, kids activities and live music.

The fair’s focus on the youth of the county extends to multiple activities for the kids. The Children’s Area features kids’ shows, presentations, a petting zoo and more.

The Browns Lake Aquaducks water ski show team has announced Thrivent Financial as its “300 HP” sponsor for the next two years.

The sponsorship supports the Aquaducks’ large equipment expenses, according to a press release issued by the organization.

The Aquaducks have spent the off season rebuilding one of their Hydrodyne boats. The team stripped the boat down to its shell, reinforced the stringers, extended the transom and completed the rebuild with new fiberglass, paint, and decals.

The team is also looking to replace its current inboard, to complete its fleet.

These upgrades are intended to allow the team to continue to perform with high standards.

The Division II National Champion Aquaducks will open their 2018 season this past Saturday. The free water ski show will be performed with a Monopoly theme, featuring different attractions from throughout the Burlington area.

The show, which is performed in the water just off Fisher Park, will continue every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. through Labor Day. The official schedule can be found online at www.aquaducks.org.

The annual festival attracts about 20,000 visitors each year, but Sterling said with the national competition, organizers were hoping to see 25,000 to 30,000 attendees.

Kayaking is a water sport that can be beneficial to the mind and body. Just about anyone willing to spend a day on the water can benefit from learning about kayaking and how to get started with this rewarding activity.

The history of kayaking is interesting. The word “kayak” means “hunter’s boat,” and the Inuit used to rely on these small vessels to catch food by sneaking up on their prey from the water’s edge. Some people still hunt and fish from their kayaks, but many are happy to use them for sightseeing and exercising.

“Paddlesports are increasing in popularity among Americans who desire to connect with the outdoors,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. The Outdoor Foundation and The Coleman Company, Inc., found in a Special Report on Paddlesports that 21.7 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.

Learning how to kayak does not involve a significant initial financial investment. The outdoor experts at REI say there’s a good chance a novice kayaker will not go out and buy a boat immediately. It’s important to first get a feel for the sport and then go from there.

Although it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s recommended that novices take paddling lessons to hone their kayaking skills. Learning the proper technique can help people avoid strain on their neck and back and safeguard their arms from fatigue.

Novices should practice on calm waters until their technique is honed. Lakes are a great place to learn, as rivers and places with mild currents can overwhelm those new to the sport.

One of the easiest ways to get introduced to kayaking is to go with an experienced paddler or tour company.

Such companies charge a set price for an excursion that will provide transportation to the drop site as well as the equipment needed for the voyage. Tours may include travel down several miles of a relatively calm waterway, allowing novice kayakers to get a feel for paddling and take in the scenery.

Getting in and out of a kayak can be challenging for beginners. The resource Kayakpaddling.net offers helpful illustrations and animated tutorials about entering and exiting kayaks as well as paddling techniques and safety.

Kayakers should bring some essentials along. A dry pack can keep electronics, food and equipment dry. Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat to keep safe from the sun. A life vest also is essential.

Watersports

Inflatables are the easy choice, a one-size-fitsmost option that doesn’t require much athletic skill or balance. Just hang on for the ride while a responsible driver swings you in and out of the wake.

For those looking for a greater challenge, skiing and wakeboarding are always popular, enabling riders to zip in and out of the wakes, or even soar high above them.

The latest craze, wakesurfing, is also rapidly growing in popularity. It requires inboard, jet drive, or forward-drive propulsion, but allows any rider to experience the thrill of surfing, no ocean required.

Every lake, river or waterway has its unofficial “party cove,” a gathering spot where fellow boaters anchor, nose into the sandbar, or “raft up” to socialize and share in the pleasure of boating. Find one that fits your style and join in on the fun.

Many boats are designed to enhance the experience, with aft seating areas, extended swim platforms, and boarding ladders to encourage passengers to ease in and

out of the water. You may even find a transom remote to control the stereo. Another benefit of coving? It allows you to enjoy the boating lifestyle, while not using fuel.

Fishing

You don’t need a dedicated fish boat to bait a hook and throw a line over the side. Fishing can be done from any boat, and is a great way to bond with kids, spend time with your friends, or just get away for a few moments of solitude.

The equipment required is minimal – rod, bait or lures, and somewhere to store your catch. Just don’t forget your fishing license, typically available online for a nominal fee. Check with your state’s fish and wildlife agency or Department of Natural Resources to get started. Good news? In most states, no license is required under 16 years of age, meaning kids are free.

Join an excursion

Dealers are aware many customers are looking for new experiences, and as such many plan getaways to locations outside their customer’s normal boundaries.

These trips aren’t just for those with bigger boats.

Trailer boat excursions put boaters both on the road and on the water; overnight or multi-day trips encourage those with overnight accommodations to actually spend the night aboard.
