Catch a day ON THE WATER WITH DAD This summer, add a little adventure and gift Dad a day he will remember by surprising him with a day of fishing. There’s nothing like getting in a boat with loved ones and heading out on the water to sink a line and enjoy some of the finer things in life together – like fishing, snacking and discovering a few unexpected treasures along the way.

Whether it’ll be just the two of you or the entire family on this excursion, start the day by presenting him with a card attached to a tackle box with the message that you’ll be taking him fishing. Tichigan Lake to host annual The second annual Tichigan Lake Treasure Hunt begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5. Boats will compete for prizes in a family friendly scavenger hunt that brings local residents, businesses, and organizations together for a fun-filled day. Tammie and Brandon Begotka created the event last year out of love of the lake and the community.
The Begotkas moved to Waterford seven years ago and say in that time they developed a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of the waterway, the friendliness of the residents and the willingness of local businesses and organizations to invest in the community. They wanted to create a family friendly event that would bring all of those elements together and found a successful and fun way
to do it with the Tichigan Lake Treasure Hunt. “Last year’s event was a huge success thanks to the participants and sponsors,” Tammie Begotka said. “There were many examples of creative ways to find the items on the list, but two really stood out. One of the items to complete was, ‘Take a picture of a person catching a fish.’ One team took
a picture of someone ‘catching’ a minnow from the live bait tanks at River City Marina and another took a picture of a team member catching a frozen bag of fish sticks!” The Begotkas are still looking for sponsors for the event and registration is limited. Those heading out to lakes and rivers are reminded to be on the lookout this summer for blue-green algae blooms on water bodies across the state. Some blue-green algae are capable of making toxins that can cause illnesses for people and animals who accidentally ingest or inhale water containing algae, or have prolonged skin contact with the algae. “Blue-green algae are in all lakes and rivers in Wisconsin, but they only become a problem when they form nuisance-level growths, called blooms, on some water bodies,” said Gina LaLiberte, DNR’s statewide blue-green algae coordinator. “Actively growing blooms are usually green and have a ‘pea soup’ appearance, but blooms may also appear as blue, white, red, or brown scums that may be foamy or in mats.” According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health, common symptoms of exposure to toxic blue-green algae blooms include rashes, gastrointestinal ailments and respiratory irritation. People experiencing symptoms that may be due to blue-green algal exposure should contact their health care provider or the Poison Control Center at (800) 222-1222. Public health officials encourage people to avoid swallowing any water and to always wash off after swimming in any lake, pond or river. Dogs should always be
rinsed off with clean water to remove algae from their coat. If people have any doubts about the appearance of water, they should stay out. They should ensure that children and pets do not swim in or drink water with an algae bloom. People are also encouraged to help out by reporting blue-green algae blooms and potential blue-green algae-related illnesses in both people and animals to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services by calling (608) 266-1120 or filling out an online survey at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov. Animals have a higher risk of dying after exposure to blue-green algal toxins because they are smaller in size and may ingest large amounts of toxins from drinking lake, pond, or river water or licking algae from their coat. Symptoms in dogs can include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or even seizures. If your animal shows any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Blooms tend to grow when there is a lot of sunlight, water temperatures are high, and there is little wind. In Wisconsin blooms typically peak from July to September. Balloonfest returns for its seventh run July 21 to 23 Waterford’s seventh annual Balloonfest will take flight July 21 to 23, behind Evergreen Elementary School, 817 W. Main St. The free, family friendly festival hosts more than 20 hot air balloons that participate in competitions and launches in the morning and early evening, along with after-dark balloon glows. For more up-in-the air fun, festivalgoers can take a helicopter or tethered balloon ride, and watch a sky diving performance to kick off the Friday and Saturday evening festivities. Additional festival activities include: the Barnes Road Beer and Wine Garden and entertainment stage (must be 21 or older); Family Movie Night presented by TDS Telecom showing Disney-Pixar’s 2009 film, “Up,” on a giant outdoor movie screen; the Runzheimer Kids Stage; Kids Zone with games, crafts, rides and inflatables; free Zumba fitness for kids and adults; Fairytale Princesses meet and greet, Milwaukee Brewers Famous Racing Sausages meet and greet; food vendors; Business Vendor Village; Arts and Crafts Market, with crafters from all over the country, and much more.

The company, which was started by Dennis and Janis Quernemoen in 1984 while they raised their family in Waterford has transformed from a small operation
run out of the Quernemoen family home to an extremely successful business employing nearly 90 workers. Some type of lightweight, flexible foot protection is recommended. This will help reduce possible injury, should you step on sharp underwater objects. • Know your vessel’s capacity – don’t overload. • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Constantly look in all directions for skiers, divers, swimmers and other boats or watercraft. • Keep a safe distance! Avoid wake jumping, splashing and passing close to any other vessels. • Know the waters you will be operating
in and observe all applicable federal, state and local boating laws. • Know the weather conditions – tune into your local forecast. • Stay clear of all restricted areas. • Obey ALL posted signs, such as “No Wake,” “Right of Way,” “Idle” and other navigation signs. • Never consume alcohol or drugs before or while operating a watercraft or boat. • All operators must be of legal age to operate the craft you will be riding. • BRP recommends a minimum operator of 16 years of age to ride. • Always operate at a safe speed and be prepared to stop or alter course in emergencies. Ride within your limits, and allow sufficient distance to stop. • Whether you’re heading in or out, always maintain a slow speed until you’re in a clear area, away from shore. • Know and understand right-of-way rules. • Remember you need throttle power to steer. • Stay in sight of shore, but avoid operating too close to residential and congested areas. The Aquaducks perform Thursday nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day at Fischer Park on Browns Lake in Burlington. The Junior Show is at 5 p.m., followed by the Main Show at 6:30 p.m. Each show is about an hour long with a brief intermission half way through.
