Racine County Fair runs July 25 to 29

The 95th annual Racine

by Tracy County Fair promises to be Ouellette “Something to Crow About” EDITOR with big-name entertainment acts and all the fun that comes with the festival.

The fair runs July 25 to 29 on the county fairgrounds at 19805 Durand Ave., Union Grove. Hours are 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. July 25 to 28 and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 29.

With a focus on local agriculture and farming, the fair puts the spotlight on animals raised by area youth and other farming attractions from local kids and adults.

Add to that all the traditional fun that goes along with the festival, including a carnival, games, petting zoo, daily entertainment, kids activities and live music.

New at the fair

One of this year’s highlights is the ATV Races Thursday, July 26, at the Grandstand.

“The races are a new event and free of charge,” said Ron Christensen, one of the fair organizers.

Also new, and much anticipated by fairgoers, is the pavement on the fairgrounds.

“For many years the roads and walkways on the south end of the fairgrounds have been gravel and this year we have paved those for easier access,” Christensen said.

The paving took about a month and was a result of years of requests.

“It will make a lot of people happy. We’ve been hearing this for a lot of years: ‘Please pave the road!’” Christensen said. “We’ve paved the roads all way up to the barns and people will have no problem accessing anything.”

For the kids

The fair’s focus on the youth of the county extends to multiple activities for the kids.

The Children’s Area features kids’ shows, presentations, a petting zoo and more.

Kids will have a blast with all the contests this year, including the Hard Vegetable Decorating Contest and Cake Decorating Contest.

The fair also has contests for the grownups like the beer and wine competitions, a photography contest and the Chocolate Dessert Contest.

The Expo Building is open daily with fun and educational activities for kids and adults.

Other highlights

The opening ceremony for the fair is set for noon on Wednesday, July 25, on the Entertainment Stage.

Royal appointments follow the opening ceremony with the Little King and Queen crowning at 2:30 p.m. and the Fairest of the Fair crowning will follow at 4:30 p.m.

The Fair Idol semi-finals wrap up the night at 7 p.m. on the Entertainment Stages.

The final competition for Fair Idol is 7 p.m. on Friday, July 27.

As in years past, the United Methodist churches in the area will have a Sunday service at 9:30 p.m. on July 29.

The Truck and Tractor Pull returns to the fairgrounds at 6:30 p.m. on July 25 and 27.

The annual Demo Derby will be at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 29.

On stage

Thompson Square and Jerrod Niemann will headline July 28 at 8 p.m. on the grandstand. Other entertainment acts will perform throughout the fair’s run and be announced within the coming weeks. Visit the fair’s website at www.racinecountyfair. com for updates.

Grandstand concert admission is $10 for grandstand seating, $20 for track seating and $40 for reserved VIP track seating (chair included).

Live music is also featured in the Activity Building. Bardog Sitter will perform at 7:30 p.m. on July 25, Rebel Grace at 7:30 p.m. on July 26, Steve Meisner Polka Band at 2 p.m. on July 27, Stetsin & Lace at 7:30 p.m. on July 27, and Brecken Miles Band at 7:30 p.m. on July 28 and Genesee Depot at 5 p.m. on July 29.

Admission

General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for kids age 8 to 13. Kids 7 and younger are admitted free of charge. A five-day season pass is $40.

Fairgoers who bring three non-perishable food items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, will receive half off one adult admission.

Amusement ride passes are sold only in the carnival area. Wristbands are $25 a day on the fairgrounds. Mega Bands can be purchased for $40 to ride all day (includes fair admission). Mega Bands are sale until July 24 only at all Community State Bank locations.

2018 Racine County Fair?

Nashville’s Jerrod Niemann is headlining at the fair this year at 8 p.m. on Saturday July 28, at the Grandstand.

Opening for Niemann is Thompson Square.

Niemann’s nearly decade-long career has produced hits such as “God Made A Woman” and “A Little More Love,” a duet with good friend and lablemate, Lee Brice Known for clever wordplay and attention-grabbing lyrics, the singersongwriter has topped country charts with his platinum-certified multiweek No. 1 anthem, “Drink to That All Night,” from High Noon – on which he co-wrote eight of the 12 tracks, according to his website.

Enjoy some favorite fair foods

State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun.

If it can be served on a stick or deepfried, chances are you can find it at a fair.

Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals.

• Funnel cake – Funnel cake and its close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others.

• Corn dogs – Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds.

• French fries – French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks.

• Cotton candy – What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor?

Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquefied enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike.

• Pie – Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts.

• Corn on the cob – Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods.

• Anything on a stick – Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. One day it may be skewered pork chops and the next a sleeve of cookies.

Children need only a few seconds to wander away from their parents. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.

Smart ways to keep kids safe in crowded areas Amusement parks, beaches, tourist attractions, concerts, and local fairs attract families each year.

Such outings can be exciting and enjoyable excursions, but panic sets in immediately when parents lose track of their children. It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety.

Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places.

Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.

Take an up-to-date photo Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children.

In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities.

Dress in bright colors Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help

make children more noticeable. Brightcolored clothing on Mom and Dad can also help kids keep an eye on the grownups.

Write it down Write down parental contact information. Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen.

Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.

Have an emergency plan Families should come up with a plan for reuniting if they get separated. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children.

Families also can choose a meet-up location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind.

Teach kids who to trust

Identify people children can look to for help. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents.

Assign an adult to each child It’s easy for one parent to think the other parent is watching. In a family of four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe.

Use a child safety harness Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers.

This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off.

Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Being prepared and acting calmly can help parents quickly find their lost children.

Thousands attend Racine County Breakfast on the Farm

by Jason Arndt to the Racine County STAFF WRITER Breakfast on the Farm, the experience was more than just savoring a hearty farm meal – it was an opportunity to interact with the animals.

With more than 3,000 visitors attending the fourth annual event June 23 hosted

by Bratz Dairy Farm in Franksville, there were plenty of options for both adults and children, like 8-year-old Carmine Granados of Racine.

“Petting the cows and eating breakfast are my favorite things,” said Granados, who showed adoration for one of the farm’s 175 cows.

Granados’ grandmother, Paula Cacciotti, has made it a family affair since the event was brought back several years ago after a 15-year hiatus.

“It is always a wonderful day with the family and I look forward to it every year,” she said.

Sarah Eulgen, the 2017 Racine County Fairest of the Fair, said Saturday’s experience brought back memories of growing up around Burlington.

Eulgen, who graduated from Burlington High School in 2013, also noted it was an opportunity to educate the public on agriculture and offer a preview of the County Fair held in July.

“It is actually great. I love educating the public of the fair. I love educating people

on agriculture,” she said. “It is really a great way to get connected with the community.”

Part of the connection includes witnessing children roam around the petting zoo and learn about animals firsthand with some showing interest in joining area 4-H groups.

“One of my favorite things is going to the petting zoo and seeing all of the kids,” she said.

Down on the farm

The experiences, according to farm owner Jackie Bratz, were part of the event’s mission.

Bratz, who operates the farm with her husband, Jeremy, said she was honored to host the fourth annual Breakfast on the Farm.

“It was an honor and it has been a lot of fun,” she said. “It has been exciting to watch everybody walk around and check out where their food comes from and see how milk is produced.”

The fifth-generation farm features Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and crossbred cows.

Jeremy, whose own family has a farming background dating back to the 1900s, said the milk produced is sold to Foremost Farms, which processes the milk into different products.

The farm produces about 9,500 pounds of milk daily that is distributed to

Some rain

After some rainfall the night before, organizers decided to close on-site parking and referred visitors to shuttle locations.

According to Bratz, the shuttle service received positive feedback.

“I heard a lot of good feedback, the

only hiccup that I heard was that a lot of the school parking lots got filled up fast,” she said.

As the fourth annual event drew to a close, organizers have started to prepare for next year’s Breakfast on the Farm, which will be held at Jasperson Sod Farm in Franksville.

Last year, Karen and John Bird, of Kansasville, hosted the event.

Corn makes up a large portion of the $132 billion worth of agricultural products exported each year and Syngenta is working to increase that amount.

U.S. agricultural trade helps feed the world while strengthening the economy Politicians spend a lot of time talking about America-First trade deals. Even though the average person may not think about U.S. trade often, it’s a key part of the economy – a topic that’s on everyone’s mind.

In 2017 alone, the U.S. exported around $132 billion worth of agricultural products. As experts hope to grow this number in 2018, possible trade deals could become big news.

The future of U.S. trading

Economists and agricultural experts want U.S. trade to remain strong, so that exports are equal to or more than what they were last year. However, the complexities of selling U.S. commodities internationally constantly increases.

Companies like Syngenta are working to grow agricultural trade to help Americans feed the world and build a stronger economy at home.

Many agricultural associations and Syngenta employees work every day with foreign countries to develop positive relationships and a preference for U.S. commodities.

American farmers are the most efficient in the world, says Laura Peterson, federal government and industry relations head for Syngenta.

“We rely on export markets for

our products, and with prices as low as they are, now is an important time to protect and grow our markets,” Peterson said. “We are able to produce far more than we consume and compete in a world of high supply, so remaining competitive is crucial for U.S. agriculture.”

Top agricultural exports

Corn, soybeans and nuts make up three of the top five agricultural exports from the U.S. There is a lot to know about these foods, including the following fascinating facts: • Corn: One planted seed delivers more than 500 kernels of corn. Corn is widely grown around the globe, with more tons produced each year than any other grain.

• Soybeans: Soybeans are the largest source of protein in agriculture. They are also used to make a variety of nonfood products, including crayons, candles and haircare products. The U.S. exports about half of all its soybeans to other countries.

• Nuts: Nuts are wholesome and versatile. From using nuts in spreads and oils to snacking on roasted varieties, people, domestically and internationally, enjoy them every day. In December 2017 alone, the U.S. exported $936 million worth of nuts.

Negotiating trade agreements

Free trade agreements beneficial to agriculture can boost the marketability of U.S. crops like corn, soybeans and nuts even more overseas. One prime example of this is North American Free Trade Agreement.

“Syngenta remains engaged with U.S. government officials to monitor impacts in renegotiations and tradedispute actions,” Peterson said.

“The current threat of trade wars or withdrawing from trade agreements may harm agriculture.

“We partner with groups such as BIO (Biotechnology Innovation Organization), U.S. Grains Council and national grower organizations to advocate on common issues that impact our interests. This collaboration and outreach is necessary to address uncertainty in markets and to grow our agriculture economy.”

With so much going on in 2018, it’s likely more news headlines will be dedicated to the important topic of U.S. trade.

Many states find that farming and other agricultural pursuits contribute much to the local and national economy. For example, new research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin-Extension show that agriculture is a powerful economic force in Wisconsin.

Agricultural businesses help generate more than $83 billion in activity and have created more than 400,000 jobs in that state.

The public should not disregard how strong a factor agriculture can be in establishing a strong economic environment.

Safeguarding agricultural jobs and the agricultural industry is crucial to economic stability.

History in the making

How Union Grove came to be

While not much is known

by Tracy about the man who founded Ouellette Union Grove, there are some EDITOR facts about John E. Dunham that were unearthed in historical documents when community members were researching the village’s origins for the 1988 sesquicentennial celebration.

In the December 1986 edition of Focus on Racine County History, Mary K. Nichols compiled an article about Dunham and how the village built up.

Nichols quoted Stella G. Moe, one of Union Grove’s noted historians, as writing “So little is known about John Dunham that he seems like a myth” in 1940.

The article said Dunham brought his wife and children to Union Grove in 1838 where he settled an 80-acre claim on the east side of what would become Main Street. The family built a home and barn on the land that would later be the location of the Hotel Shepard.

Dunham was reportedly a bit of a loner and didn’t mingle much with the flood of settlers who staked their claims just south of the Union Grove area along the BurlingtonRacine Trail.

According to “A History of Union Grove,” which was taken from the community history files of the Union Grove American Legion Auxiliary and published Oct. 11, 1979, settlers were coming from the east coast to start a new life.

People from New England began moving in during the early 1840s and they are credited with naming the area Union Grove because of the large grove of burr oak trees which grew in abundance and for the oneroom school which was called Union School that was at what is now the intersection of highways 11 and 45.

Because of its close proximity to Racine, taking a day to travel there with a fully loaded grain wagon, farming was the area’s mainstay. Tradesmen were also highly interested in settling in Union Grove because of its location on the old Indian trail, which ran along what is now Highway 11.

Erastmus Cadwell set up the first blacksmith shop in Union Grove, which was near what is now the west entrance to the Racine County Fairgrounds. William Reid built a small cabin and general store next to

Cadwell’s blacksmith shop, supplying local farmers and travelers. The first inn was build by a Mr. Beer on the north side of the trail near what is now 1400 15th Avenue.

It wasn’t long before the village was in need of a school to teach all the children who came to settle in the area with their parents. It was 1846 when a log building was constructed to house the school and also serve as a community building and a church.

This was the Union School the village was named after. The first post office was established in 1846 as well.

The Congregational Church left the schoolhouse four years later to build its first church on the corner of Highway 11 and Union Street.

Then the Racine, Janesville and Mississippi Railroad line into Union Grove was charted in 1852, local land prices shot up from $6 to $45 an acre. At this time an association was formed to purchase land and develop the community around the new railroad. Dr. Ammon P. Adams was named the president of the Union Grove Land Co. in 1853. He and 11 others bought 160 acres of land just west of Main Street and north of

13th Avenue. After the purchase, they began laying out the village proper, which had 24 blocks. It was June 19, 1856, when the first steam engine train came to Union Grove.

It was part of the Racine, Janesville and Mississippi line.

It is said the train’s arrival was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for John Dunham, the original settler, who left Union Grove when the trains arrived.

A section of Dunham’s farm was bought by a man named P.P. Taylor for a new store to serve the railroad employees.

Reid, who owned the existing general store, decided the best way to compete with this new store was to take his show on the road, so to speak. He put his store on skids during the winter of 1857 and had a team of oxen pull it so it was opposite Taylor’s store on Main Street.

A gristmill was constructed around 1865

by James Jones.

Union Grove was incorporated in 1893 with a population of 493 people.

The Myers Opera House opened in 1880 and doubled as a community building until it burned down in a 1904 fire.

By 1906, the Racine and Union Grove areas were considered thriving communities.

The Eagle Hotel burned to the ground in 1915. Fire struck the village again in 1916, in what is called the village’s worst fire, when multiple buildings burned in a blaze that engulfed an area of Main Street.

Locals battled the blaze from about 2 or 3 a.m. until daybreak. It was estimated that the damage to the 11 buildings involved in the fire was about $50,000.

However, it wasn’t long before the village recovered and new buildings dotted the landscape.

After that, Union Grove continued to grow into the community it is today at the Heart of Racine County.

Nichols; “A History of Union Grove” by Union Grove American Legion Auxiliary; “A Brief History of Union Grove” Old Settler’s Inn Commemorative Placement Series No. 3 written by The Writing Consortium in Racine for the N.
