County Fair hopes to return in 2021 Animal auctions to take place online July 31 to Aug. 2

The Racine County Ag Society spent months monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and how the lingering public health issue could affect the 2020 Racine County Fair.

But, in June, the Ag Society followed most other area fair organizations and decided to strike the annual event from the 2020 calendar for the community’s health and safety.

“The safety of the Racine County Fair’s visitors, participants, volunteers, and community is the highest priority in producing the annual fair,” the Ag Society wrote in a statement.

The Racine County Fair Board, however, will allow a junior animal livestock show and sale for youth who dedicated themselves to various projects.

The animal sales will be virtual at the fair’s website, racinecountyfair.com.

The online Large Animal Sale, featuring the finest animals exhibited by the youth of Racine County, will start at 6 p.m. Friday,

July 31, and end at 10 a.m. Saturday Aug. 1. The sale order is: lambs, beef, swine.

Bidding on animals will close every 30 seconds starting with the first animal until finished. There will be a maximum of three additional bids at the close of each animal.

The online Fur and Feather Sale will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, and end at noon Sunday, Aug. 2.

Limited meat processing, by Harry Hansen Meat Service and Wilson Farm Meats, will be available. Because of the pandemic, the meat processing plants are operating at capacity, according to fair officials, and when their capacity to process the fair animals is reached, buyers will have the option to ship elsewhere or donate.

To benefit the Fair Building Fund, the Appreciation Dinner or the Racine County Food Bank and at the same time supporting the youth, buyers may donate an animal. The price of the original sale will go to the youth exhibitor and the animal will be shipped with the proceeds going to the selected organization.

Bidders should visit the fair’s website for more information on the sales and donations.

Making the decision The Ag Society decided to cancel what would have been the 98th annual Racine County Fair after seeking guidance from Racine County health agencies and taking direction from county government officials in late May and early June.

“It became clear the cancelation was the prudent choice for the fair to do its part to improve community health and safety, and reduce the cycle of infections,” the Ag Society stated in a news release.

The Ag Society also took financial implications and repercussions, into consideration when deciding to cancel the event.

The Ag Society said it hopes conditions related to COVID-19 improve enough to bring back to Racine County Fair July 28 through Aug. 1, 2021.

The Racine County Ag Society recognized the frustration and disappointment fairgoers are feeling following Monday’s decision.

“The fair looks forward to brighter and better days ahead when we can gather again to celebrate all that is exceptional about Racine County,” the Ag Society stated.

The Racine County Fair plans to offer refunds to people who purchased tickets or pre-paid open-class fees.

“The Racine County Ag Society Board of Directors is heartbroken for small businesses, family farms, competitors, exhibitors, volunteers, community outreach groups, and everyone else who dedicates their time to the Racine County Fair,” the Ag Society stated.

Sad, but grateful Riley Runkel, 15, of Wheatland, is one of many exhibitors who have spent time working on her projects leading up to the Racine County Fair.

Runkel, who won Grand Champion Market Steer at the County Fair in 2019, later captured the top prize in the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction at the State Fair in West Allis.

“I am sad that it was canceled, but I am also very grateful that they are still giving the youth an opportunity to show knowing our hard work did not go to waste,” said Runkel.

Runkel, an incoming sophomore at Burlington High School, acknowledged canceling the Racine County Fair would be inevitable after officials from the State Fair and Kenosha County Fair nixed their events within the last month.

“When the State Fair was canceled, I kind of accepted the County Fair would be canceled because everything else was,” she said.

Runkel, however, admits the decision still isn’t easy for her and others to comprehend.

The decision leaves out traditional fair activities such as rides and camaraderie with other exhibitors.

“It is sad because we are going to miss out on the rides,” she said. “I am really upset that we won’t have the opportunity to have a normal fair.”

4-H offers alternatives during pandemic In Wisconsin, 4-H leaders believe in educational opportunities that involve youth in their own learning. The leaders encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

The goal is to encourage youth to do a hands-on activity, reflect on their experience, and apply what they learned in the current activity and beyond.

The state organization’s leaders also know that world events could prevent some of those things from happening in 2020 – especially with the canceling of many county fairs and curtailed 4-H activities.

To answer that challenge, they came up with resources to guide parents, families and caregivers in providing quality educational activities in the age of coronavirus.

A full list of the resources broken down by age group is available online by searching for 4-H Wisconsin Extension.

A team of Wisconsin 4-H educators from around the state created the list of easy-to-access activities and curriculum.

The team filtered out many activities with hard-to-find supplies and those that needed a lot of adult supervision to be safe. They specifically included activities that encourage some kind of safe social connection and/or involved getting out of the chair and moving.

According to the 4-H team, if you don’t have exactly the right materials at home, think about what you do have.

Don’t have foam pipe insulation? Try a pool noodle. Don’t have colored construction paper? Use printer paper and encourage youth to color a design on it.

The following are some of the resources provided for children of all ages. Visit 4h.extension.wisc.edu and search for the curated list of at-home learning activities to find links and downloads to accompany the activities.

Runkels notch top two steer spots at 2019 fair

In 2018, Reid won the title of grand champion showing a crossbred steer he called “Scooby” and collected $47,500 in the 50th annual Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction.

Reid Runkel was overcome with joy when his younger sister won Grand Champion for her steer she calls Trippie at the 2019 Racine County Fair.

Reid, 18 at the time, who was just named Reserve Grand Champion for a steer named Pierre, immediately ran to Riley, 14, and embraced her as she started drowning in tears amid a raucous applause from the crowd.

It was a clean sweep for the duo from Wheatland.

The elder Runkel, a Burlington High School graduate, said he felt overwhelmed because of all the hard work he and his sister put into their projects leading up the Racine County Fair.

“For me, it is just every morning and every night, we worked together as a team,” said Reid Runkel, who has been involved in Burlington Back-40 4-H with his sister.

“Even though she beat me, if I would have won, she would have done the same thing for me.”

Riley, 14, an incoming BHS freshman, could not precisely count how many hours she and her brother spent working inside the barn on the steers.

When asked, Riley paused, and could only approximate 60 hours.

“We were just spending a lot of time in the barn and putting in a lot of hard work,” said Riley, whose victory is her second in as many years.

Last year, when Riley was just finishing seventh grade at Wheatland Center School, she captured her first grand championship.

Riley felt elated after winning her second straight, and found the 2019 title to be extra special because she and her brother notched the top two spots.

“It felt really great,” she said. “I felt like our hard work has paid off and the

The Runkels, children of Gail and Ron, built a strong agriculture foundation on their family farm in the Town of Wheatland.

The farm was a formerly a dairy operation until 1996 when Ronald Sr., who developed multiple sclerosis, sold the dairy cows and has since raised beef cows.

The Runkels credited their father for instilling a work ethic needed to win top awards at the county and state fairs. “(Ron) has been doing it his whole life, and I guess that is where it all starts,” he said.

In addition, Reid found another reason to win, which is to “prove other people wrong.”

While Reid plans to pursue a career in the trades, Riley is now a student at Burlington High School, where she is involved in the school’s FFA. Tori Crisp finished third, Jack Henderson took fourth and Taylor Schaefer placed fifth to round out the top five.

Reid indicated his sister’s back-to-back wins are impressive, especially since she is still relatively young, facing more experienced competitors in the show ring.

“I am just proud of her for the time and the effort she has put in,” Reid said.

Riley, when asked whether she envisioned the siblings would go 1-2,

chuckled and said they did not expect to win.

The Runkels, however, were not done showing their steers. Riley, who exhibited a 1,333-pound Maine Anjou, and Reid, with his 1,330-pound crossbred, took their animals to the Wisconsin State Fair in August.

Racine County Fair cancellation FAQs Why did the Racine County Fair cancel?

The Racine County Fair Board assessed the risk to its exhibitors, their families, volunteers and the general public. The uncertainty for social gathering, social distancing guidelines and requirements that would need to be followed, and the financial implications determined that we are unable to hold the 2020 Racine County Fair.

Will Open Class participants receive refunds?

Yes. The Racine County Fair will refund all Open Class entries by check in the mail.

Will Junior Class entries be refunded if they do not have animals to show?

Yes. The Racine County Fair will refund all nonanimal entries via a check in the mail.

Are you going to have a Junior Fair?

Yes. The Racine County Fair Board is finalizing the details to hold a Junior fair for all animal projects. Details of this modified fair were to be sent to the exhibitors that have signed up for animal projects. This will not be open to the public.

Will there be a carcass show?

The carcass committee is working on details for having a carcass show. All animals already entered into the carcass competition will be sent to market and graded, however there will be no dinner/gathering at Harry Hansen Meat Service for safety reasons.

Are you going to have an auction?

Yes. The Racine County Fair Board is finishing its entry system to provide an opportunity for youth to sell their animals. Previous buyers will be notified of the new system. The online Large Animal Auction will start at 6 p.m. Friday, July 31, and end at 10 a.m. Saturday Aug. 1, and the online Fur and Feather Auction will begin at 6 p.m.

What about the non-animal exhibits?

Any exhibitor that was already working on a non-animal project will be able to save it and enter it in 2021. Youth exhibitors that may age out of youth class this year will be able to enter in open class for 2021. Unfortunately the fair is unable to create an opportunity for face to face judging that was safe for both exhibitors and judges.

Will sponsors and vendors receive refunds?

Yes. The Racine County Fair Board will refund any Sponsorship money or it will be held for the 2021 Fair. Any vendor payments that have already been submitted will be refunded or will be held for the 2021 fair.
