The midway at the Racine County Fair draws big crowds during the fair’s annual run. With a theme of “Go Hog Wild” this year’s fair, June 26 to 30, promises to be an adventure for all ages.

With a theme of “Go Hog Wild” the 94th annual Racine County Fair promises to be a frolicking, fun time! The fair runs July 26 to 30 on the county fairgrounds at 19805 Durand Ave. in Union Grove. Hours are 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. July 26 to 29 and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 30. The family friendly festival highlights the best of local agriculture and farming, featuring many animals raised by area youth and other farming attractions from local kids and adults. Additionally, the fair offers all the traditional fun that goes along with the agriculture, including a carnival, games, petting zoo, daily entertainment, kids activities and live music. July 26 to 30 As in years past, the on the county fair features daily shows fairgrounds specifically designed for the 19805 Durand Ave., younger crowd. The Children’s Union Grove Area will have the Great Lakes Lumberjack Show, Nick’s www.racine countyfair.com Kids Show, Kids are People Too, the Zoppe Circus and the petting zoo. The kids age 4 to 12 will

also have their own cream puff eating contest at 1 p.m. on July 27. Registration is required, but the contest is free. The Kids at Heart cream puff eating contest for “kids” 13 and older will be at 11 a.m. on July 30. Registration is also required along with a $5 entry fee. The Expo Building will have LEGO building stations from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily for all ages. The Expo will also feature a large LEGO display by the Kenosha LEGO Users Group. The Swifty Swine Racing Pigs return for another run on the south end of the grounds. The pigs race daily at 1, 2:30, 4:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The grandstand will host the Truck and Tractor Pulls at 6:30 p.m. on July 26 and July 28. The annual demo derbies will be at 2 and 6 p.m. on July 30. The Little King and Queen will be crowned at 2:30 p.m. on July 26, on the Runzheimer Stage; the Fairest of the Fair crowning will follow at 4:30 p.m.

Easton Corbin will headline July 29 at 7 p.m. on the grandstand. Forgotten Highway will open. Concert admission is $10 for grandstand seating, $20 for track seating and $40 for reserved VIP track seating (chair included). Party on the Track with Chasin’ Mason at the

grandstand at 7 p.m. on July 27. The Runzheimer Stage plays host to multiple acts all five days of the fair including performances by Stetsin & Lace, Brecken Miles, Mean Jake, Rebel Regien, Revival, and Fall Hazard. The Fair Idol semi-finals are at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with the finals at 7 p.m. on Friday. The local Methodist churches will also have a worship service on the Runzheimer Stage at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 30. And Packer Hall of Fame inductee Frank Lamping will be honored at 5 p.m. on July 27. Live music is also featured in the Activity Building with acts such as the Lunch Money Bullies, Class of ’62, Steve Meisner Polka Band, Brecken Miles and SaddleBrook.
Admission
General admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $6 for kids age 8 to 13. Kids 7 and younger are admitted free of charge. A five-day season pass is $35. Fairgoers who bring three non-perishable food items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 26 will receive half off one adult admission. Midway Mega Bands are $40 on sale July 1 to 25 at all Community State Bank locations and include fair admission. Daily wristbands for the midway are $20. ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS ABOUND DURING FAIR’S RUN From headliner Easton Corbin to local bands like the Lunch Money Bullies, there’s something for everyone in the way of music and entertainment at the 2017 Racine County Fair. Country music star Easton Corbin is the big name this year at the Fair. With two No. 1 singles, multiple awards and nominations, plus performances on some of the biggest stages in the world, Mercury Nashville’s Easton Corbin has made a lasting impression on the country music landscape, his website states. Corbin will perform after Forgotten Highway at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 29. His self-titled debut album was released in 2010 and spawned back-to-back hits “A Little More Country Than That” and “Roll With It;” making him the first country male artist in 17 years to have his first two consecutive singles reach No. 1. In 2012 the Gilchrist County Florida native released his sophomore album, All Over The Road, which included the top five hits “Lovin’ You Is Fun” and “All Over The Road.” Corbin set a career-best debut on Country Airplay with his top five hit single, “Baby Be My Love Song,” from his No. 1 debuting album About To Get Real, according to his website. Corbin spent 2016 on one of the biggest tours in country music – Carrie Underwood’s The Storyteller Tour.

Party on the Track with Chasin’ Mason Chasin’ Mason will host a Party on the Track at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, at the Grandstand. Since its formation in 2003, the Wisconsin-based group has wasted little time establishing themselves as one of the hottest up and coming bands in country music, having sold 15,000 independently released CDs and performing more than 200 shows a year, according to the band’s website.

While food historians generally agree the cornmeal-covered hot dogs on a stick became popular at American fairs in the early 1940s, who is actually responsible for the deep-fried delicacy we know as corn dogs? Generally, the accolades seem to go to the Fletcher brothers, creator of Corn Dogs in Texas, and Jack Karnis – creator of Pronto Pups in Oregon and Minnesota. The U.S. Patent and Trademark office confirm that Pronto Pups were introduced in 1942; however, this is about the same time Corn Dogs appeared at the Texas State Fair. Something resembling corn dogs appeared in the 1920s, according to a description of the Krusty Korn Dog Baker (circa 1929). However, these dogs were not deep-fried in hot oil; they were made like waffles in the KrustyKorn Dog Baker machine. An article from the New York Times states “There are ‘corn dog’ stands...on the docks at St. Petersburg, Florida,” dated Dec. 7, 1941. Presumably this indicates corn-dog type foods were well known in vacation areas. The use of quotation marks around the term “corn dogs” indicates this was the generic name for the product rather than a trademark. The Oregon version of the story: “Jack Karnis was the first person to buy a Pronto Pup franchise. Invented in an Oregon lumber camp, the recipe for the batter-coated hot dog was an instant hit when Jack and his wife, Gladys, took them to Chicago. Jack was selling them on a Chicago street when an alert Minnesota entrepreneur saw the line and got in, figuring that people would wait only for something good.” The Texas Version of the story: “Neil
and Carl Fletcher come up with a new fast food product – corny dogs – which they offer to the public for the first time during the summer midway operation. Since its introduction at the Texas State Fair in Dallas in 1938, the corndog – a hot dog dipped in corn meal then fried up to a golden brown – has become a favorite American fast-food.” Ultimately, does it matter? Corn dogs are just…doggone good. (Information from www.fsafood.com)
Sticky sweet Four men are credited with the creation of the soft, fluffy sweet we know as cotton candy that was originally called “fairy floss.” Thomas Patton, Josef Delarose Lascaux, John C. Wharton, and William Morrison patented the first electric cotton candy machine in 1899. The machine used centrifugal force to spin and melt sugar through small holes. In 1904, two Nashville candy makers introduced their invention of how to make cotton candy to the St. Louis World’s Fair. Due to fair goers’ curiosity, these inventors sold approximately 68,655 boxes of cotton candy for 25 cents a box for a total of $17,163.75. In 1900, Patton obtained a patent for his invention of making cotton candy. Using a gas-fired rotating plate to spin caramelizing sugar, he was able to form threads of cotton candy with a fork. He introduced his invention to the public at the Ringley Bros. Circus. About 50 years later, in 1949, Gold Medal Products launched a cotton candy ma-chine that had a spring base. Signature events such as the Great Pumpkin Chuckin Fest, Fourth of July parade, Back to the Past car show and Super Saturday are just some of the fun things to do in the Heart of Racine County. Get it fresh at the Farmer’s Market The Union Grove Farmer’s Market, located at Village Square on Main Street and 10th Avenue in Union Grove, is from 2 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday through Oct. 17, rain or shine. This marks the sixth full season of the market, which features seasonal fruits and vegetables, honey, kettle corn and various crafters. The market has added a “sweet” new tradition – a nonprofit bake sale. A trip Back to the Past The Back to the Past Car Show begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in downtown Union Grove. Free ice cream will be provided by the Union Grove Lions Club, and a hotdog and soda will be free with the purchase of corn from the Bronco Select Baseball Team. Other activities during the festival include a toy show, threshing and sawmill demonstrations, breakfast served by the Union Grove High School choir, and a parade on Saturday and Sunday. Returning this year is the Best of the Midwest BBQ Cook Off. This is a Kansas City BBQ sanctioned event. BBQ teams from all over the country will try to smoke the competition to see who will be the best of the Midwest. Don’t miss out on the Pumpkin Chuckin Competition. Teams, also known as, “Chuckers,” will build a catapult, trebuchet or slingshot and launch 8- to 10-pound pumpkins as far as possible. There is more to chuckin than just the mechanical components, however. This competition is also about teamwork, fun, creativity and good sportsmanship. The Great Pumpkin Chuckin Fest is proud to promote STEM skills – science, technology, engineering and math. In addition to the competition, this year the Fest is hurling with excitement because Acme Catapult will be demonstrating their World Championship chucker! The Acme Catapult is the tandem axle monster pumpkin catapult machine capable of hurling refrigerators and lawn tractors high into the air, or throwing a tenpound pumpkin over 2,000 feet! The ACME Catapult has been seen on national television hurling large appliances on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and also throwing lawn equipment high into the air on ABC’s “My Kind of Town”. You may have also seen the Acme Catapult tossing pumpkins on the TLC Special “Punkin Chunkin,” which was filmed at the 2002 World Championship Punkin Chunkin competition in Delaware. Located on the Racine County fairgrounds, the event has music, food, seasonal beers, costume contests, rides, free kid’s games/activities, pumpkin baking contests, and more.

Getting to know them
Currently, more than half of our nation’s farmers are at least 55 years old. However, as these farmers retire over the next few years, millennials – America’s largest demographic and arguably our most tech savvy – will likely be taking their place.
Many companies that hope to supply this new generation of farmers with goods and services are getting ready for the transition. Syngenta has already launched a training initiative designed to help its employees build trust, improve service and strengthen partnerships with younger customers and coworkers. The training gives participants a better understanding of who millennials are and what’s important to them. “Millennials are one of the most talked about but least understood generations,” says Gil Strader, head of field force excellence and training at Syngenta. “We’re finding fascinating insights that can help bridge this generation knowledge gap.” Research reveals that younger growers in the agricultural industry are:

Young growers take more innovative risks than their older counterparts, but personal relationships are just as important to them as the latest technology. Many prefer phone calls and in-person meetings over the digital dialogue so dominant today.

For many families in the area, and the state, the family pet lives on their farm and doesn’t always have paws. Various kinds of livestock are beloved pets for kids and grownups alike in Wisconsin.

7 things to consider before living with livestock Animals play a meaningful role in the lives of their owners. In fact, most people consider their furry friends part of the family. And while dogs and cats tend to be the most common companions, nowadays, the beloved family pet can come in many different shapes, sizes and species. Families across the country are opening their hearts and homesteads to various types of livestock, proving once and for all that not all pets have paws. Leanne Lauricella, founder of the popular rescue organization Goats of Anarchy and a consultant for Tractor Supply Company, has experienced this firsthand. Lauricella cares for more than 40 special needs, orphaned and disabled goats, as well as two pigs, and while she loves her hoofed herd, she says families should be aware of the unique challenges that come with raising such a pet. “It’s common for people to see a cute baby pig or goat and think, ‘I want one!’” says Lauricella. “These animals are adorable and make for great companions, but they do require a special type of commitment from their owners and it’s important for people to understand the responsibilities before deciding to adopt.”
To help determine if livestock adoption is right for you, and to provide some tips for families who are getting started, Lauricella and Tractor Supply give us a glimpse of what life with livestock really looks like. They get big It may sound obvious, but many wouldbe adopters forget that the once small, adorable baby animal they adopted will one day grow into a full-fledged adult. A pot-bellied pig, for example, may start out nice and little, but it will hardly be considered a lap animal when it reaches a whopping 100-250 pounds. They like having friends The majority of farm animals thrive in a herd or flock, and having companions is extremely beneficial to their long-term health and happiness. Before you get started, make sure you have the time and resources to care for multiple animals. Adjusting your lifestyle It’s important to note that your new animal isn’t going to adjust to your lifestyle. With farm animals, Lauricella
says, it’s the other way around. Livestock animals generally rise with the sun, and when they do, you will too. And remember, there’s no snooze button on a hungry goat. A space to fit their needs Livestock animals need space to roam, but don’t underestimate the importance of also keeping them properly contained. While the size and strength of a fence will vary depending on the animals you plan to adopt (you can research containment options for specific animals at TractorSupply.com), quality fencing should always be a high priority. The last thing you want is for your animals to outsmart their fence and roam into a nearby farm, field or neighborhood. Caring for them when they’re ill All animals are susceptible to illness, but livestock animals have a higher risk of contracting infections than their indoor counterparts. Veterinarians can help determine the right medical plan for your animal, but it’s vital for new livestock owners to identify a livestock veterinarian before their animal gets sick.
Be sure it’s legal Livestock laws differ from place to place, so if you have plans to bring home a new pig or goat, it’s a good idea to check your city ordinances and homeowners association to be sure your new pet is allowed by local rules.
