A BIT OF How prom came to precede the pomp and circumstance

As the final weeks of students’ high school careers whittle down, many milestone events dot the calendar. During this time, prom is the pinnacle celebration for many outgoing seniors.

Prom, short for promenade — wherein guests parade around amid lavish fanfare — is an American tradition, but semi-formal dances and dinners for students are also held throughout Canada and the United Kingdom.

Even though modern proms are closely tied to high school, the tradition actually began for college students. The first recorded prom took place with the all-male student body at Amherst College, who in 1894 invited women from nearby Smith College to dance and dine. Teenagers pushed the prom tradition out of colleges and into high schools, and by the early 1940s, proms were exclusively tied to high schoolers.

Proms have remained essentially unchanged for the last 60 to 70 years, with the exception that proms have become more grandiose over the years. Largely gone are the gymnasium-held dances, and now catering halls, hotels and other toptier facilities typically host the festivities.

Perhaps the grandest prom venue was the White House. In 1975, Susan Ford, daughter

of President Gerald Ford, hosted her senior prom mere steps from the Oval Office, becoming the only first child to do so.

Promgoers and/or their parents spend sizable amounts of money on gowns, tuxedos, flowers, transportation and much more to solidify their prom memories. Quite often prom nights turn into entire prom weekends or vacations, with after-parties and travel built into the tradition. Greater emphasis is now placed on the drama of the “promposal,” with certain individuals going to great lengths to orchestrate the ideal way to ask a date. And while at one point attending prom alone might never have happened, many students now relish the idea of attending as groups of friends to downplay the stress on prom couples.

Thanks to social media and the connectivity of the internet, some enterprising high schoolers have attempted to make their prom experiences more memorable by asking their favorite celebrities to attend prom with them. Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Shaun White and Miley Cyrus are all celebrities who have gone to prom with fans. Others like Selena Gomez have crashed proms.

Even President John F. Kennedy crashed a prom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel when the students of John Burroughs High School had already booked the same room in which the president intended to have a fundraising dinner. JFK opted for a smaller room and let the kids have their fun, later popping in to say hello.

Did you know?

The word “prom” is short for “promenade dance,” an annual formal dance held for high school students, typically those in their junior and senior years. While the term “prom” might not be used across the globe, schools in many countries host similar dances for high school-aged students on the cusp of moving on to college.

In the United Kingdom, proms did not become popular until recently. Prior to the 21st century, secondary school students in the UK might have attended formal dances at the onset of summer to celebrate the end of a school term, while students old enough to be finishing secondary school might have

attended a “Leavers Ball” to commemorate that milestone in their life. But a 2012 report in the Daily Telegraph noted that more than 85 percent of secondary schools in Britain now host school proms, which range from relatively informal gatherings to more extravagant affairs.

In South Africa, students may attend a Matric Dance, which commemorates their final year matriculating in their high schools. German high school students celebrate their graduations rather informally, and such celebrations may even include some lighthearted mocking of their teachers.

STAYING SAFE AT THE Establish a child-parent Prom can be one of the most exciting evenings in an adolescent’s life. A gathering with friends that soon may part for different areas of the country or even the world, prom night offers the chance to let loose and have fun before the “real world” beckons.

Attending prom might be a thrilling way for high-schoolers to spend an evening, but prom night can be dangerous. Many parents approach their kids’ prom nights with trepidation.

To understand why parents can be so apprehensive about prom night, consider these statistics: • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 300 teens have died in alcohol-related car accidents on prom weekends over the past several years.

• A 2014 survey of teens between the ages of 16 and 19 by the driving group AAA found that 41 percent of promgoers would likely use drugs or alcohol on prom night.

• A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services national survey reported 30 percent of male high school seniors considered it acceptable to force sexual activity on a girl who is intoxicated or high.

• According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, one in five female high school students is the victim of physical or sexual abuse at the hands of a date.

• NHTSA also says that, by age 18, more than 70 percent of teens have had one drink without adult supervision. When teens drink they tend to binge – consuming

prom night agreement at least five drinks on a single occasion.

Through open communication, parents and students can work together to make prom night fun and safe. One way to facilitate this is to enter into a prom agreement. This written contract will spell out acceptable behavior and what to do in the event of an emergency. Items to include in the agreement can include: • A curfew for returning home; • An outline of expected festivities and when/where a child will be when not at the dance; • A list of emergency contacts programmed into cellphones, including taxi services; • Name of the prom date as well as all friends who will be traveling together; • The limousine company’s name and the driver’s contact information;

• An acknowledgment that parents can peruse kids’ belongings for illegal substances or alcohol; • Acceptance on the part of the parent that he or she will pick up the student at any time or place if the teen is intoxicated or thinks he or she is in danger; • An open discussion on sexual activity and experience and if intimacy is planned for the evening. Parents also should discuss contraception with their children in advance of prom night; and • Teens agreeing to be financially or legally responsible should poor prom behavior result in damage or charges.

Prom night can be an enjoyable experience when students, parents and administrators work together to help ensure a safe, fun evening.

Top hits featured at proms for the last 40 years High school is a pivotal time in a teenager’s life that is marked by many academic and social experiences, including sports games, extracurricular clubs and school dances.

School dances are so iconic and intertwined with student life that they have – together with their accompanying musical score – provided a setting for popular movies like “Pretty in Pink,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Never Been Kissed.” Perhaps no dance is more

The history of boutonnières and corsages

Prom night is a special moment in the lives of many teenagers. Tradition plays a role in making prom night special. Even parents get emotional when they watch their youngsters adhere to many of the same customs they partook in decades earlier.

One such tradition involves the wearing of boutonnieres and corsages. Some may be interested to learn the origins of the custom of wearing boutonnières and corsages.

Boutonnières

Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically wear boutonnières, but some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt.

During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

Corsages

The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits.

According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice. At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top.

The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today.

The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

Prom can be an expensive rite of passage. A 2015 survey from Visa indicated the average American family planned to spend about $900 on the prom, with parents contributing as much as 75 percent of those costs. Similarly, Visa Canada’s survey showed households with teens were prepared to spend an average of $500 on prom in 2015. And spending on the prom isn’t all that’s contributing to the event’s final price tag. There’s the “promposal” to factor in as well. In Canada, many teens spend about $150 just to ask out a potential prom date, and Americans can spend more than double that amount on their promposals.

Tickets, transportation, attire, grooming treatments, meals and several other factors can add up to make prom very costly. However, those feeling the potential stress of the prom bill can explore various ways to cut those costs.

Search for deals

Subscribe to mailing lists and download dealfinder apps like LivingSocial or Groupon to find the best deals. If there’s a particular manufacturer or store that you prefer, subscribe to their mailing list, which might make you eligible for “insider” deals.

Shop early

Get a jump on prom shopping and possibly save some money by shopping early for prom wardrobes.

Girls can shop when party dresses are on discount after New Year’s Eve galas. Waiting until prom season to shop for prom night attire can be a costly mistake, as dresses and formwalwear tends to be expensive come prom season. Guys can shop sales as well if they want to make a splash in a custom suit. Otherwise, guys can rent tuxedos to save money.

Go supermarket floral

Supermarkets and warehouse clubs may offer discounted prices on flowers, which promgoers can fashion into boutonnieres and corsages. Also, nothing says you cannot pull a beautiful bloom out of your home garden.

Be your own paparazzi

Smartphone cameras now have excellent capabilities, and certain apps can apply filters and fix minor flaws easily. Pair with a coupon for discount photo prints, and soon you’ll have a frugal photo memory book or wall portrait.

Savings in numbers

See if a particular vendor will cut costs if you book services with a group of friends. Retailers will be guaranteed the sales, and promgoers can save some money.

Responsible partying tips for teens As graduation nears for millions of students, proms, parties, travel excursions and other opportunities to celebrate are on the horizon.

Teenagers and young adults understandably want to let loose and enjoy a bit of revelry this time of year. But they shouldn’t do it at the expense of their safety. Even though Monitoring the Future’s survey of drug use and attitudes among high-schoolers shows some promising trends – notably that past-year use of illicit drugs other than marijuana holding steady at the lowest levels in two decades – drug and alcohol use remains a concern whenever teens are in social situations. Furthermore, the National Institute on Drug Abuse found high school seniors reported reduced perception of harm in occasional cocaine, heroin and steroid use and reduced disapproval of trying LSD. Underage drinking, and binge drinking in particular, is responsible for the deaths of thousands of underage kids each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With planning and effective communication, parents, caregivers and teens can make smart and responsible decisions this graduation season.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Parents need to be careful when speaking with teens about alcohol and recognize that kids may be observing their parents’ alcohol consumption. Parents should lead by example and avoid drinking to excess.

TRUST YOUR JUDGMENT

Teens should not let peer pressure compel them to do anything they do not want to do. It’s not necessary to drink or do drugs to have a good time. Encourage teens to surround themselves with like-minded friends who watch out for one another.

KEEP HOME PARTIES SAFE

Parents hosting prom or graduation parties at their homes should limit invitees to a set number of guests and ask that their children do not advertise parties on the internet

or social media. Gate-crashers may lead to unmanageable situations, and parents may have trouble controlling parties when there are too many people present. Focus on food, music and other fun that doesn’t involve drugs or alcohol.

Open communication and honesty can help young adults responsibly navigate the end-of-school social scene.

Expert tips for prom-ready skin

Although wardrobe, hair and accessories are important considerations for prom preparations, teenagers should not disregard a healthy skin care regimen, which can ensure they look their best in the scores of professional and candid shots snapped and chatted about over the course of prom festivities.

Even with the bevy of photo filters and social media apps that can hide blemishes and other minor photo faux pas, it helps to have healthy and beautiful skin. Here’s how to achieve great results.

Determine skin type

Selecting the right products involves understanding the type of skin on your face and body. If you are prone to shiny spots or makeup tends to slide off after a few hours, you likely have oily skin. Red patches and flakes may be indicative of dry skin. Many people fall in between, where areas on their cheeks may be dry and spots in the T-zone are oily.

Segway

Promgoers who have their own Segways or know someone who would lend them one can take a Segway to their prom, asking a parent or relative to pick it up after they arrive at the festivities so they won’t have to drive it home in the dark. Young women may need to tie their dresses up before climbing on to their Segways, but these two-wheeled electric vehicles certainly provide a fun and unique alternative to traditional prom night transportation.
