Pet ownership reduces health care costs

About 80 million U.S. households have pets, according to the HABRI Foundation, and that pet ownership has saved the U.S. health care system an estimated $11.7 billion.

The largest savings was determined based on a lower incidence of physician office visits by pet owners as compared to non-owners.

Additional savings were calculated for increased physical activity for pet owners, such as dog owners who walk their dog five or more times a week.

When at home, your own pet can provide a sense of security and peace to help manage stress and anxiety, too.

Pets provide companionship Companionship is a top reason people own pets. During times of increased isolation such as quarantine and social distancing, this is particularly important. An additional study

by HABRI found that pets are part of the solution to social isolation and loneliness, a growing public health epidemic, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Around 85% of respondents agree that interaction with pets help reduce loneliness and 76% agree that human-pet interactions can help address social isolation, followed by 72% who believe that human-animal interaction is good for their community.

Vet relies on curbside service

Demand surges as pet ownership increases

Caring for animals during the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t been easy for veterinarians and pet owners alike.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began a year ago, pet ownership has increased and veterinarians have had to change how they offer care with services such as curbside drop off.

Curbside service for veterinarians, as with other industries, intends to a strike a balance between staff welfare and client needs.

Dr. Ailena Baum, of Lyons Veterinary Service, said she and others in the industry have worked diligently to meet the needs of pet owners and their animals.

“A lot of practices are doing what they can and as much as they possibly can,” she said.

Baum, who opened Lyons Veterinary Service four years ago, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011.

Baum provides routine medical services to her pet patients and has experience in general soft tissue surgery and performs many emergency medical procedures.

Baum said she and other veterinarians have encountered many challenges since the pandemic began.

Last spring, in both Wisconsin and nationally, federal health officials advised veterinarians to preserve personal protective equipment for human medical care.

“We were instructed, for example, not perform elective surgeries, like spaying and neutering,” Baum said.

Since then, elective surgeries have been allowed as manufacturers produced more PPE. The pause in elective surgeries, she said, has caused a backlog in appointments that has increased demand and led to some longer wait times.

Adoption uptick As more people stay home, according to USA Today, pet adoption has increased exponentially and fewer animals are left at shelters.

Baum agreed with the research and said many households have added another pet.

“Pet ownership has increased dramatically since COVID-19. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of households owning pets, or adding another pet,” she said.

The influx in pet ownership, however, has resulted in increased demand for veterinary services.

As pet ownership increased, Baum noted some increases in sales of pet medications of up to 30% in some instances.

Customer service perception Traditionally, owners can accompany their animals to veterinarian appointments.

But because of COVID-19, many industries, including veterinarians transitioned to curbside services to accommodate social distancing and limit the number of people inside a building.

For some customers, according to Baum, seeing veterinarians provide care is a key component of customer service.

With curbside service, however, that poses some challenges.

Baum acknowledged customers have a strong connection to their animals.

“There is a lot of emotional factors for curbside,” she said. “I can provide the same spay service for a cat, but the owner would get upset because they weren’t allowed in the building.”

Baum, meanwhile, continues to look for ways to offer a peace of mind for pet owners who want to feel engaged.

“We are trying to figure out ways to make people feel engaged and happy with the experience from a customer service perspective,” she said.

There is one exception to the curbside service requirement, which is euthanasia,

she said.

Baum typically allows owners to witness euthanasia, which can create tension for owners seeking routine care.

“That at times, creates resentment, because somebody else got to go into the building,” she said.

Curbside service can also become

Traditionally, veterinarians walk an owner through a pet examination, including real-time discussions.

“This is typically less efficient because you have to bring animals in and you have to examine animals…then call the owner and discuss the findings,” she said.

and that will help cover costs. I brought back one employee from unemployment recently and I have plenty for them to do,” Everson said.

She added that it was her daycare and grooming side of the business that has carried her through the past year.

“Initially we did curbside pickup of the pets, but now we leave it up to the customers, if they’re not comfortable coming in, they can call us and we’ll come out,” Everson said.

She has also adjusted her hours, tailoring them to when they are seeing businesses, most notably cutting her morning drop off times for daycare to 7 to 9 a.m. instead of staying open until noon because her clients were mainly dropping off their dogs in the mornings.

“I’m still flexible with hours if someone needs something, I can make it work and I’m trying to be as accommodating as we can and sensitive to what makes sense with our hours and not having an employee here for eight hours at a time with no one coming in.”

Everson said one of her main concerns is making sure everyone is comfortable with their situation and she will work with their individual needs, even picking up animals from the homes of some of her elderly, at-risk clients.

“It’s what they need right now, so it’s what I’m doing,” she said. “We’re open to whatever people are comfortable with.”

Everson said she thinks business will pick up in the summer, and is already seeing signs people are a little more willing to travel and board their pets.

“My only hope is that it’s a gradual thing,” she said. “It will be easier that way, I don’t want 60 dogs all at once because I have to try to keep up with the hiring as we get busier.”

Walking the dogs For Burlington dog walker and pet sitter Terri TiernanMaguire, the pandemic has also brought her business to a near grinding halt.

“I haven’t got as much work, that’s for sure,” TiernanMaguire said. “I don’t have any inhibitions about going into people’s homes to pet sit, but

people aren’t traveling and I’ve lost all my dog walking people because they’re working from home.”

She added that things are starting to “pick up” a bit and she’s had a couple of in-house pet sitting jobs in the last few months and has a couple more on the books already for spring.

“I think people are more willing to go out now and vacation a bit,” Tiernan-Maguire said.

Pet sitting and dog walking is Tiernan-Maguire’s “retirement job,” which she began about three years ago.

“I love dogs and cats – I love all animals, really,” she said. “A dog will never let you down.

You can be having the worst day ever and when you come home, all that dog wants to do is love you and be loved by you. Yes, it’s a big commitment, but it’s so worth it.”

Tiernan-Maguire sits for pets in their own home and word-of-mouth advertising and repeat clients keep her busy, in a normal year.

“I think the reason people keep calling me back is because I’m extremely communicative with the owners. When someone is away, they want to know their animas are being well taken care of. I’ll text in the morning and evening to let them know how things are going. I take pictures and send them so they can see their animal. It’s important to me to make sure they know their animal is OK.” Tiernan-Maguire said she also does a “meet and greet” with prospective client families before taking on someone new.

“Everybody has to be comfortable with this,” she said.

“I need to be comfortable with them and make sure I can care for the animal and they need to make sure their animal is being left with someone who cares.”

Pros and cons to keeping pigs as pets People are drawn to pets for various reasons. Self-sufficient cats entice those who prefer independent pets that do not take up much space.

Dog lovers might enjoy the companionship and boisterous personalities of tailwagging pooches. Exotic pet owners appreciate the uniqueness of their reptiles and amphibians and how they may serve as a conversation starters.

Pot-bellied pigs also can make for interesting pets that can make for beloved additions to households. Curious, trainable and very intelligent, pigs offer more as pets than many people may realize. Many people mistakenly perceive pigs as dirty, smelly, sweaty messes. Such misconceptions may make people weary of adopting pet pigs. While not ideal for everyone, pot-bellied pigs can make wonderful pets.

The Pig Placement Network, a service that facilitates pot-bellied pig adoptions and placement, says that while pigs are highly trainable and can learn at a faster rate than dogs, the behavior of pigs is quite different from canines.

Prospective pig owners must learn the intricacies of pigs before considering taking one in as a pet.

Pigs are regarded as prey and therefore have developed a suspicious nature. It can take time to earn a pig’s trust.

Furthermore, pigs can become stubborn, depressed and easily bored if not given adequate attention. This may lead to destructive or aggressive behavior.

Mini Pig Info, another pet pig resource, says pigs will constantly test limits. They quickly can learn that squealing will get them attention. Unlike other pets, pigs’ emotions closely mirror those of humans.

Pot-bellied pigs, which originated in Vietnam, are one of the smallest breeds of pigs as compared to what one would find on a farm. Piglets may start out small and cute, but even a smaller pot-bellied pig can reach 100 to 170 pounds in adulthood.

Those who don’t understand this ahead of time contribute to the growing number of pet pigs surrendered to shelters.

Other factors that can influence if a pig is the right pet for a person: • Pot-bellied pigs can live an average of 12 to 15 years with proper care; • Communities have their own specific rules regarding pet pigs. Check if pigs are legal before adopting one; • Pigs are not apartment dwellers. They will need exercise and access to a yard that allows for rooting and exploration; • Pigs have a pronounced sense of smell and will immediately know when someone is eating or opening food; and • Finding a veterinarian who is familiar with pot-bellied pigs is key to maintaining the animal’s health and longevity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes to daily life. One of the positive effects of COVID-19 is that many individuals have turned to pets to tame loneliness or bring some brightness into their lives amidst all the uncertainty and turbulence.

In April 2020, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said applications to foster dogs and cats was up 200 percent. In addition, PetPoint, a software system shared by shelters nationwide, reported fostering and adoptions were up by 700 percent since 2019. A TD Ameritrade survey found 33 percent of Americans have considered fostering or adopting a furry friend during the pandemic.

While it may be tempting to rush out and adopt a pet right away, careful consideration must be given before bringing a new pet into a home.

Expense

One of the biggest considerations is cost.

The TD Ameritrade survey found that dog owners spend up to $1,201 a year on their pets, while cat owners spend up to $687 per year on average. Food costs top the list of pet expenditures, followed by veterinary care and grooming.

Lifestyle

Another aspect to consider is if a certain animal will fit its prospective owners’ lifestyles. Outdoor enthusiasts and physically active people may want an exercise buddy, so a high-energy dog breed may fit the mold. Those who want a cuddling companion or lap warmer may opt for a less active dog or a cat.

Make a puzzle feeder The active pursuit of food is instinctive for cats. A puzzle feeder is a great way to appeal to your cat’s desire for physical and mental stimulation. All you need is a plastic water or soda bottle and a utility knife. Use the knife to cut a few small holes in the sides of the clean, sanitized bottle. Make sure the holes are big enough for pieces of kibble to pass through. Place some dry

kibble into the bottle, screw on the cap and let your cat get to work.

Go for a walk It may seem unorthodox, but cats can be trained to walk on a leash. Many cats enjoy getting out to explore the neighborhood.

An extensive questionnaire and a potential home visit may be part of the application process. Veterinarian references, age restrictions (adoptive pet parents are often 21 years or older) and permission from a landlord if one rents will be needed.

Some rescues have stipulations regarding fenced yards. Some shelters even insist on a disclaimer that they reserve the right to remove the pet if they feel the animal is not being properly cared for.

Special treatment Larson currently has about 50 dogs on her client list. An appointment with her includes a bath (which includes being dried), nail trim, ear cleaning and, depending on the type of dog, a haircut.

“My whole goal is to give the dog the best experience possible. It can be scary for the dogs – especially the ones I work with, but also for their owners,” she said.

Generally, Larson said, six to eight weeks is a good window between appointments though she does see some dogs more frequently.

“Sometimes, older dogs get a little extra care because it makes them feel better so I’ll see them more often if that’s what their owner wants to do. And some dogs just need to be groomed more often,” she said.

Helping to make the experience enjoyable for the dogs sometimes includes using CBD oil.

Larson said she can generally calm the dogs down but if they’re extremely stressed, another step may be needed. And as long as the owners are OK with it, the CBD oil has proven to be very effective.

“I have one dog that’s a senior and I think she’s getting doggy dementia. The mom couldn’t even clean her face because she was getting aggressive. It took awhile but after four weeks of using CBD and working with her, I was finally able to shave her face again.

What a great feeling that was,” she said.

Some of Larson’s clients have multiple pets; in those instances, one pet at a time is brought to the trailer for grooming.

“I just did a house that has four dogs, but I also have one client who has 12 dogs. That’s a whole day project but it’s still fun,” she said.

Larson currently sees four cats and said working with them varies depending on their personality, and their mood that day.

“Some are easy – they just lay there – but others are not. And once a cat is done, where they don’t want you to do anymore with them, you’re done and there’s nothing else that’s going to happen at that appointment,” she said with a laugh.

Always loved animals Larson said she’s always loved animals, especially dogs that have special needs.

“My mom was a groomer and took care of dogs that she rescued that were special needs.

My aunt had taught my mom to be a groomer so I’ve always been around dogs, since I was little,” she explained.

She said some people just have a way with animals and she’s thankful that she’s been blessed with that talent.
