5 fall tips FOR PROTECTING YOUR PET’S HEALTH Whether fall is when you switch out your exercise regimen or schedule your annual flu shot, staying healthy is at the top of most “to do” lists right now.

Just remember your four-legged family members when considering seasonal changes to your wellness program. Fall is the perfect time to take steps to keep pets healthy, too.

Plan that vet visit

Annual check-ups that include immunizations, physical exams, routine blood work and prescription refills are as important to pet health as they are to human health. Routine wellness visits can also save pet-care dollars in the long run through preventive care and early disease detection. If your pet missed his or her annual check-up last spring, consider getting that visit rescheduled.

Most veterinarians offer pet wellness appointments with curbside drop-off and pick-up to help safeguard owners’ health.

Get off the couch

Summer’s heat is giving way to cooler

temperatures, so resist the temptation to forgo your dog’s evening walk for yet another movie marathon. Not only will outdoor exercise help whittle your pet’s waistline and promote joint health, but getting outside to enjoy the fall colors can boost your own caloric burn and mental outlook as well.

Don’t “fall” back on parasite prevention

Just because you aren’t slapping mosquitoes like you did in July doesn’t mean you should stop protecting your pets from parasites. The American Heartworm Society recommends giving heartworm preventives – many of which prevent a host of common parasites – to dogs and cats year-round.

While heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, it’s nearly impossible to guess when you’ll see the last one in the fall or the first one next spring. Diseasecarrying mosquitoes can also survive as temperatures drop by migrating indoors or to protected areas near houses and other buildings.

Rethink your pet’s fall wardrobe

Protective wearables make more than a fashion statement for many pets. Arthritic senior dogs, as well as short-haired dogs or lean breeds that chill easily, will be more comfortable if you slip on a cozy fleece coat when clipping on their leash. Just make sure your pup’s garment has a snug vs. a tight fit – and consider coats with reflective fabric if you favor nighttime walks. And if your fall activities include hunting with your dog, make sure to outfit your four-legged companion with a hunting vest.

Hide the Halloween treats

Whether or not your kids go trick-ortreating this year, you may be making plans to stock up on Halloween candy. Just remember that certain human treats may be toxic to your pets. Chocolate is hazardous to both dogs and cats, sugar can throw off your pet’s electrolyte balance and certain artificial sweeteners can cause liver failure in dogs.

So go ahead and keep the candy to yourself.

Just keep it away from your pets while you’re at it.

friend’s ear and then go hide.”

Olivia was at a kill facility and then two shelters before finding a forever home with Pytko and her husband.

“We got her from Animal House Shelter in Huntley, Illinois,” she said. “She is very sweet, happy, smart, and should be in a circus act.

She looks like a Yorkie but is about 8 pounds larger.”

The dogs have taking to SUP like, well, ducks to water, Pytko said. With safety always in mind, they head out on the lake whenever possible.

“We all wear a life vest and a leash; ankle leash for me,” she said. “Most days we travel 1 to 2 miles, sometimes more on Lake Elizabeth.”

Once, she said, she and Olivia did a total 5-mile circumference of the lake.

When Pytko first began paddling with the dogs, she used her grandchildren’s smaller board for practice. After a few weeks they moved up to the 10-foot bard.

“They like to walk around the board, making it more challenging for me,” Pytko said. “Sometimes I just stop and sit on the board and take in the peacefulness and quiet of the lake.”

She’s even talked her husband, Dale, 69, who has diabetes and walks with a cane, to giving it a try.

“He actually sounded a little excited. He got his life vest on and I got him into the water over to the board to sit down and slide over to the middle facing forward. Gave him a paddle and off he went.

I followed him. Of course he did not stand up but it was quite an accomplishment for him. He loved it,” she said.

For Pytko the freedom and benefits of stand-up paddle boarding have given her a fresh outlook on life.

“Make a living list, not a bucket list,” she advised. “Try something new. Take a challenge, big or small. Smile and enjoy!”

Prevent pet-related damage to the house The benefits of having a pet are innumerable.

Pets can be companions, protectors, service animals, and even help produce products that can be sold, such as eggs from chickens.

While there are many positive attributes to pets, one potential concern is the impact they have on the home.

Pet-related damage can occur when pets are angry or happy. Boisterous animals may scratch or claw at furniture and floors. Some animals may climb or chew.

Woodwork and furniture can be damaged by pet paws and teeth, but that’s not where it ends. The following are some potential pet-damage problems and how to avoid them.

Marking

Many animals use scent markers to establish their territory and communicate with other animals. As a result, both male and female pets may spray urine in certain areas of the house.

While it may not eliminate the problem immediately, making sure to neuter or spay cats and dogs can reduce the likelihood that they’ll mark indoors or attempt to seek out and mate with feral animals they smell canvassing the property.

Pet owners who arrive home to discover that their pet has caused damage to their domiciles may wonder if that is covered by their homeowners insurance policies.

Allstate insurance states that homeowners insurance typically does not cover damage inflicted by pets on personal property or the dwelling itself. This also applies to domestic farm pets, as would be the case if a goat or ewe broke fence posts or the barn door.

The cost for replacement or repairs for pet-related accidents is the pet owner’s responsibility.

However, the liability protection provided with most standard homeowners policies may offer coverage if your pet damages someone else’s property, such as if your puppy chews up the moldings while a neighbor is pet-sitting.

It is always important to review and discuss policy coverage with an insurance agent to learn what level of protection you have. In addition, quality crates and/or fencing can help keep mischievous pets out of trouble and reduce damage in and around the house.

Obedience training can head off some issues, but if a medical condition is suspected, consult with a veterinarian promptly.

Dirt, fur and more An investment in regular grooming can help keep certain damage at bay, states Home Advisor. Regularly brushing and trimming coats, keeping nails clipped and bathing will keep a home fresh and minimize damage.

Other pets may not be groomed but require cleaning of cages or other habitats. Bird droppings and feathers can get on surfaces.

Cleaning daily or very frequently can help keep a home tidy.

Provide toys and scratching posts

Pets need an outlet to tame anxiety and energy. If they don’t have suitable outlets, pets may cause damage to a home.

Cats will take to furniture to stretch their paws if they don’t have scratching posts or special mats. Dogs, particularly puppies, can be orally fixated. When the urge to chew sets in, unless there are appropriate chew toys, furniture, moldings and other items around the house may become fair game.

It is important to note that declawing a cat to prevent damage should not be a consideration. It is a surgery that can cause ongoing health problems. Nail caps can be used as a safe alternative.

Know the signs Symptoms of illness in four common pets If pets could speak, caring for them would be that much easier. But pet owners must rely on physical cues to determine if their beloved pets are doing well or feeling under the weather.

Various animals display different symptoms when they are not feeling well or suffering from illness. It is important for pet owners to become familiar with what is “normal” for their pets so that they can readily identify behaviors or symptoms indicative of illness.

Keep in mind that symptoms that would indicate illness in one pet may not do the same with other animals. That is why it is key to establish a baseline. According to Mark Stickney, DVM, director of general surgery services at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, any change in a pet’s behavior from what is normal is reason to consult a veterinarian.

This generalized symptom list may give pet owners pause to speak with a vet about the health of their furry friends.

Dogs are a little better that cats at conveying illness. Generally speaking, normally upbeat and boisterous dogs who are now lethargic and uninterested in interaction are probably sick.

Fetch by WebMD says disinterest in food for several days, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in urination might indicate illness.

Quite often pet owners do not discover their dogs are suffering from diabetes until they have to frequently refill water bowls and their normally trained pets start urinating inside the home.

Getting to know pet behaviors and indications of wellness can make it easier to determine if a pet is sick and needs medical attention.

Cats will spit up on occasion, particularly if they have been grooming themselves and have to pass a hairball. Cats who roam outdoors may gobble down a kill and later vomit back up indigestible parts, like feathers or fur. But frequent vomiting may be indicative of a food allergy or intolerance. Sometimes it may be the symptom of gastric irritation from parasites like roundworms.

It is difficult to gauge if cats are ill because they can be so stoic. Blood in vomit or feces, decreased activity, straining to urinate, or urinating in inappropriate places can be signs of illness in cats.

The basics of feeding cats Cats create a whole new dynamic when they’re brought into a home. First-time cat owners may have a host of questions about their new furry friends, but foremost on that list likely concerns what to feed their felines.

The ASPCA recommends speaking with a veterinarian prior to designing a diet for your cat. The vet will recommend a diet based on a host of variables, including the cat’s age, its activity level and its overall health.

That last component is especially important when adopting a full-grown cat, as some cats may not be coming from good homes. That means some cats may be malnourished or have developed diseases in their previous homes. Such cats still make wonderful additions to a home, but special consideration will likely need to given to their diets to return them to full health and/or promote their longterm health.

In addition to speaking with a veterinarian, the ASPCA recommends new cat owners keep the following tips in mind when designing diets for their furry friends.

• Limit treats. The ASPCA says treats should be no more than between 5 and 10 percent of the cat’s diet.

• Be careful with baby food. Some cat owners find that feeding finicky kittens baby foods gets them to eat when they’re refusing their own food. But the ASPCA warns cat owners to read baby food labels carefully before feeding any to a pet. Onion or garlic powder, which can be found in some baby foods, can be poisonous to cats.

• Don’t wait to go to the vet if the cat is exhibiting signs of illness. The ASPCA advises cat owners to take their cats to the vet if the animals exhibit signs of anorexia, diarrhea, vomiting, or lethargy for more than two days.

A Dog’s Version of a Disney Style Vacation

Interesting facts about nocturnal pets While many animals like to soak up the sun and go about their business in daylight, there are plenty of others who seem to come alive after darkness falls. These night owls and more hunt and survive in the dark, which is called nocturnal and crepuscular behavior.

Nocturnal behavior is an adaptation to help animals survive in dark conditions and avoid predators. While some have excellent night vision, others have poor eyesight and rely on other senses to survive in the darkness, according to Animal Sake.

Nocturnal animals sleep all day and are active at night. Crepuscular animals are mostly active at night, but not entirely sedate during the day. While a number of wild animals, such as lemurs, coyotes and skunks, follow these patterns, certain animals that have been domesticated as pets also have nighttime predilections.

People who take these animals into their homes should understand that they won’t see much action from the pets during the day when the animals are resting.

But when nighttime arrives, there will be much more activity. Those who are hoping to sleep themselves may have to make accommodations if they plan to cohabitate effectively with nocturnal pets.

Mice and rats

These furry friends also enjoy frolicking at night. They may scratch around their cages and make various noises. They also visit the litter box at night (if trained), groom themselves and may be more receptive to petting from owners.

African pygmy hedgehog

This is a species of hedgehog commonly kept as a pet. According to The Spruce: Pets, pet hedgehogs are quiet, active, entertaining, and require a lot of care. They make great companion animals. However, because they’re nocturnal, they will need to be fed and cared for in the evening hours.

Leopard geckos

These lizards sleep in safe and hidden spots during the day and become active when night falls. Leopard geckos do not have the same light requirements as other reptiles that are kept as pets.

Cats are most active between dusk and dawn, and are content to snooze throughout much of the day. They seem keen on catching prey (whether real or imaginary) around the house at night and vocalizing when their owners are trying to get some shut-eye.

Cancer can strike any person at any time. Cancer does not discriminate based on gender, age or nationality, nor are pets immune to this potentially deadly disease.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says approximately one in four dogs will, at some stage in their lives, develop neoplasia, which is the uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells or tissues in the body.

A neoplasm can be benign or malignant.

Almost half of all dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans. There is less information about the rate of cancer in cats.

Just like humans, pets can exhibit different signs that indicate cancer may be present, according to the Blue Buffalo Pet Cancer Awareness group. These include: • Swollen lymph nodes: Lymph nodes are located throughout the body, and enlarged lymph nodes may indicate the

presence of lymphoma.

• Enlarged or changing lump: Any lumps on the body that grow or change in shape or texture should be investigated.

• Distention in the abdomen: When the stomach becomes rapidly enlarged, this may indicate the presence of a mass or tumor in the abdomen.

• Weight loss: Chronic unexplained weight loss can be indicative of cancer or some other illness and should be taken seriously.

• Unexplained bleeding: Bleeding from any part of the body that was not traumatized should be addressed with the vet.

Other potential signs of illness include oral odor, lameness, blood in urine, and a non-productive cough.

Pet owners should discuss possible treatment plans if their pets are diagnosed with cancer. According to PetCure Oncology, in the past a cancer diagnosis

may have left pet owners with little hope.

However, research is now ongoing and there are new treatments that can improve quality of life and reduce the number of treatment sessions.

The company says stereotactic radiation, or SRS/SRT, is an advanced form of radiation therapy. Compared to traditional radiation therapy, SRS/SRT is delivered with extreme precision and may be used for some forms of cancer considered untreatable due to sensitive locations in the body.

This may be one part of a cancer treatment plan for companion animals.

Other cancers may be treated with surgery or medications. Pet owners can discuss their options with their veterinarians.

Cancer treatment in pets, much like humans, is based on the type of cancer, how large tumors are and if the cancer has spread, advises AVMA. (METRO CREATIVE)

With support and treatment, it may be possible to prolong the life of companion animals that have been diagnosed with cancer.
