5 ways to prevent your pet from getting lost Loving pets want to be right by their owners’ sides as much as possible. As a result, a boisterous puppy may follow underfoot while a cute kitty will snuggle on the sofa with its owner.

Even though pets prefer to stick close by, there are times when distractions, events or noises can cause a pet to roam.

Animals that do not know how to find their way back home can quickly become disoriented and lost.

The number of pets that go missing can be staggering. The American Humane Association estimates that more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States every year. One in three pets will become lost at some point during their lives. The following are five steps pet owners can take to prevent them from getting lost.

Get a collar and identification tag.

Collars may seem “old school” in a digital world, but a dog tag is an ideal way to identify a pet and provide contact information should he or she get lost.

Invest in microchipping.

Microchipping is an effective way to ensure current contact information always

accompanies the animal, whether he or she is wearing a collar or not.

Microchips are small identification devices about the size of a grain of rice that are painlessly inserted just under the skin of a pet. The microchip gives off a signal that can be read with a handheld scanner used by animal shelters and most vets.

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, examined information from 53 animal shelters across the U.S. and confirmed the high rate of return of microchipped dogs and cats to their families.

Ensure your pet is spayed or 3. neutered. Animals that have not been spayed or neutered have a tendency to

roam because they are looking to fulfill the instinct to mate. Neutering removes this desire, and the pets may be more content to remain at home.

The temperatures have cooled down and the fall colors are starting to appear, yet it’s not too cold to enjoy a brisk walk or even a leisurely stroll together. It’s also a fun time to enjoy holidays and treats with your pet – as long as you know what’s healthy for them, and what’s not.

Here are some do’s and don’ts for enjoying the changing season with your furry best friend this fall.

Pets need annual checkups too. Investing in preventative care is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your pet is healthy. Annual checkups allow your vet to screen for issues and provide insight on any concerns.

Pets’ chronic conditions are manageable: If your pet has a chronic condition that needs treatment, don’t panic.

You may have to make some lifestyle adjustments to your pet’s diet or daily exercise routine, but these changes are usually manageable and well worth it for your pet’s health.

Pet prescriptions may be available at your local pharmacy: If you need prescription medications to treat your pet’s chronic conditions, look for alternatives that could save you money. Starter supplies for small pets Cats and dogs may get much of the attention, but small pets can bring just as much to a household as their larger counterparts. Diminutive in size but not personality, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, reptiles, mice, and more may be just the right fit for those who desire a pet, but may not have the space or money for large animals.

The American Pet Products Association’s 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey found that 7.9 million households had birds, 6.7 million had various small animals, and 4.7 million included assorted reptiles. The pet sitter company PetBacker says 9% of Canadians own pets such as fish; birds; small mammals, such as hamsters; and reptiles.

t is hard to resist the beckoning big eyes, soft fur and lovable kisses of a puppy. When that tail begins wagging, it can be easy to forget how much attention and work puppies require.

Puppies love to learn about the world and are naturally curious and energetic. Puppies also can become easily bored and mischievous if not given chances to expend their energy.

Puppies do not know what is right and wrong in their new environments and have to learn such lessons through trial and error, often getting into trouble along the way. However, puppy owners can take steps to curb potentially troublesome behaviors.

Ways to support shelter animals if you’re not ready to adopt The winter months, which are often considered some of the busiest for animal shelters, are approaching. According to the ASPCA, about 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you’re not ready or able to adopt?

Hartz Loving Paws is committed to supporting companion animals in shelters through product donations and volunteer events. October was Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and Hartz partnered with the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas to share opportunities for you to give back to pets in need if you’re not ready or able to adopt.

Even if you’re not in a situation where you can adopt a pet, you can still support your local animal shelter by volunteering, donating and sharing.

Provide a temporary home An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes.

Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support.

Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering, and the length of time a foster pet may stay in your home varies depending on the animal’s needs. Contact your local shelter to fill out an

application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household.

Volunteer Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website.

Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone.

You can also volunteer to participate in a shelter rebuild project. Hartz Loving Paws renovates shelters twice a year in partnership with GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Rebuild program. These teams work with shelters to create playful and welcoming environments for animals.

If you’re new to photography, there are free training videos available on the One Picture Saves a Life website that show how to take better photos of shelter pets.

Become an advocate Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.

What to expect when adopting a shelter dog

Millions of dogs reside in shelters or in foster homes just waiting for someone to make them permanent members of their family. The ASPCA says there are nearly four million dogs in shelters across America.

Bringing home a puppy or an older dog can be an exciting, selfless endeavor.

Shelter dogs have the capacity to be loving, devoted pets. Unfortunately, many such dogs have been dealt difficult hands, ending up in shelters through no fault of their own.

Prospective pup parents should be aware that there can be a transitional period as dogs acclimate to their new homes. Understanding what to expect the first few weeks and months can be helpful.

Creatures of habit

Dogs are creatures of habit and feel most comfortable when they know what to expect.

Moving from a shelter into a home can be a big change. Shelter dogs will need time to understand the workings of a household.

By remaining consistent and patient, dog owners can help their pooches acclimate to their new surroundings. Feed the dog at the same time and place each day. Take the dog for a walk the same time each day with the same route. Knowing what to expect can be calming for the dog.

Housetraining regression

New puppies likely do not fully know the rules of housetraining, but even older dogs who may have been housetrained can regress in a new environment. Pet parents

may have to go back to basics and reinforce housetraining lessons.

Shyness and anxiety

It’s impossible to know what dogs went through before landing in a shelter. Shelter workers may have conducted certain tests, such as food aggression or resource guarding, but that only paints part of the picture. It will take time for the dog to trust and understand, and dogs may be timid and experience anxiety for a brief period. Some may even act out by exhibiting damaging behavior.

Safe space

The experts at Hill’s Pets advise employing a crate that can serve as a den for the dog. It not only is an area that can keep the dog out of trouble as he or she learns the rules of the house, but it also can serve as a safe haven that is familiar and comforting.

Training classes

Enroll in training classes so that the pup begins to learn commands. Obedience training also helps keep the animal safe.

Vet care

Make an appointment to have the shelter dog checked over by a vet as soon as possible.

This helps everyone get on a vaccination schedule and can pinpoint illnesses or behavior problems. Many shelter dogs have common communicable illnesses like kennel cough or worms that require prompt treatment.
