Mukwonago is also home to The Elegant Farmer, which has garnered national attention for its “Brown Bag Apple Pie.” The pie has been named “best pie in America” by the Wall Street Journal, Gourmet and Food Network. Dan Scheel and John Bauer, of The Elegant Farmer even won a showdown with Chef Bobby Flay.

The Elegant Farmer is one of the depot stops for the East Troy Electric Railroad, which runs May through December and features regular train rides, dinner trains, the annual Santa Train and more.

The village’s interstate exchange has built up over the years and contains the Pro-Health facility, which will become a full hospital in 2020, in the DN Greenwald Center on Maple Avenue and big box shopping opportunities with Walmart and Home Depot on Wolf Run. Mukwonago was first settled by the Potowatomi Indians in the 1700s. The term “Mukwonago” translates to “Place of the Bear,” according to the village’s website.

In spring of 1836, Sewall Andrews and Henry H. Camp built their homes just northwest of the Indian Village. In 1836, Mukwonago’s first plat was made. Soon afterward, more residents would begin developing homesteads and businesses in the area.

The Andrew’s house still stands today and is now home to the Mukwonago Red Brick Museum.

With all there is to see and do, Mukwonago is the place to work, live and play.

The Village of Mukwonago’s website says “Mukwonago resides at the intersection of life, leisure and economic leadership” and from all indications, it’s true.

Just off of Interstate 43 in southwestern Waukesha County, Mukwonago and its 20,000 residents keeps its small-town feel even when offering big-city amenities.

With new homes being built every day, the community is one of the fastest growing areas in Southeast Wisconsin.

Community events are one of the area’s calling cards with the Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce and local non-profit organizations like the Lions Club and American Legion Post sponsor events all year long.

In 2019, the Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Mukwonago teamed up to bring Balloons Over Mukwonago to the village. After several years of the Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce hosting the annual hot air balloon festival, the event was looking for a new home because of Waterford’s downtown redevelopment and heavy road construction.

The Mukwonago Chamber and village officials stepped up and worked to bring the event to Our Town with great success.

Coming to America Students learn about immigration in workshop

Day, the students began their journey by learning about immigrants and how they were treated as they came to America.

Fourth graders learned of the hardships and unfair treatment of those emigrating from other countries.

The fourth-grade teachers –Terri Herrera, Eric Butalla and Jennifer Nellis – said they take their roles very seriously. The “officers” keep the long line (separated by cones) moving with a stern and commanding voice/face, void of their every day smiles and comfort.

Without talking, the students shuffled and weaved through the line with their bundles. They spent their long minutes in line studying their passports to be prepared to talk with the immigration officers. The mood was somber, and even though the students knew this was a simulation, they

said they were nervous, afraid and some felt unfairly treated.

Satisfying the immigration officers inquiries wasn’t easy. The students needed to know the information on their passport and have an idea as to what they were going to do once they were allowed into America. They all spoke to one of three immigration officers who decided whether or not they were allowed to enter America. Superintendent Shawn McNulty, Director of Student Learning Nick Reichoff and Rolling Hills Principal Ron Schlicht played the parts of the immigration officers.

Most of the immigrants were welcomed to America and were invited to enjoy a huge feast of food from around the world (donated by parents).

There were, however, a handful who were denied access and “detained.”

Whether it be because of health reasons, future plans/intentions or finances, the “detainees” were seated at separate tables off to the side and needed to wait until all immigrants had met with the officers. They then had a second chance to go through with a better plan to impress the officers and were then allowed to join everyone in the feast.

Teachers reported discussions and reflections after the immigration simulation were very telling. The impact of the exercise had left the students with a new appreciation of what their ancestors went through. Most reported the difficulties in regard to communication on the “boats.”

“The boat ride was long, I wasn’t able to talk to my friends on the boat because we were from different countries and didn’t speak the same language,” Ahmad Dissi complained.

Many also spoke of the lines leading to inspection.

“It was an awesome turnout!” Bob Johnson said.

Stops along the way included Holy Hill, The Bear Trap in North Lake, Hollywood’s Roadhouse in Nashotah and Finn’s in Wales.

Two stops in/near Mukwonago were Paradise Springs in Eagle and It Ain’t Heaven. The day was filled with fun, food, raffles and live music by Los Guys.

Ivy’s story

Six-year-old Ivy Cosgrove was the guest of honor at this year’s ride. She was the recipient of new walking blades from the funds collected at the 2017 Taylor’s Ride.

She showed off her new “running” legs as she and her sister Anna visited and posed for

arly Saturday morning, you could hear the low rumble of dozens of motorcycles as they gathered together for an unforgettable ride in the memory of an unforgettable young woman.

Taylor Johnson may not be here physically, but her legacy continues to live on. For the third year, Taylor’s dad, Bob Johnson, has been the leader of “Taylor’s Ride.” The motorcycle run and fundraising event has been held in her memory every other year since 2015. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to Kelsey Prosthetics located in Greenfield and Wauwatosa.

Taylor was born with Conradi Hunermann Syndrome. It is a condition that affects the bones, skin, hair, and eyes. Because of this, she was born with a shorter arm and short leg on the right side of her body. Taylor also

had scoliosis and lordosis of the spine. She had many visits to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She underwent 14 surgeries – 10 on her leg, four on her spine. The last leg surgery resulted in an amputation.

Through all of her physical obstacles, she wouldn’t let anything slow her down, her dad said. If someone told her she couldn’t do something, Taylor would push that much harder to prove them wrong. She never wanted any special treatment and was determined to do things just like everyone else.

She was an inspiration to everyone she met. Taylor would go out of her way for those she cared about. She also spoke to families who were going to go through the amputation process. She was honest with them about what to expect, what you can do, and what you can’t. Taylor made the most of her life with the body that she was given. Her bright, beautiful spirit could never be dimmed and it continues to shine brightly through the hundreds of lives she has touched in her 22

pictures with riders before the start. The girls were in charge of directing the riders out of the parking lot. Both were wearing custommade pink T-shirts saying “Taylor’s tiny pit crew” complete with pink flags to wave.

Jennifer and Preston Cosgrove adopted Ivy’s sister Anna when she was 19 months old. About a year later, they went back to China to adopt Ivy. Ivy was 22 months old at the time.

The girls were born in opposite parts of the country, but happen to share the same birthday (just one year apart).

Both Anna and Ivy were born with congenital leg issues. Ivy was born with an extremely rare condition called tibial hemimelia. It occurs in about one and 1 million births. She was missing both tibia bones in her lower legs.

“Walking was impossible for her, so surgery to amputate what did exist, in terms of her lower legs, was a no brainer,” Jennifer Cosgrove said. “Three months after she came home to us, she had her lower legs amputated.”

Ivy spent one night in Children’s Hospital, and walked for the first time five weeks later in her very first set of tiny prosthetic legs.

“She hasn’t stopped since!” Jennifer Cosgrove said with a laugh.

deficiency. She didn’t have much of a femur in her upper leg or a hip joint. Anna underwent a radical 12-hour surgery in Baltimore, two years after she came home to the Cosgroves. Her leg was surgically turned around backwards which makes her foot act as a new joint now.

Despite all of this, Anna and Ivy live incredibly full and happy lives.

“They bring joy to everyone they meet and we consider ourselves to be the lucky

ones to get to be a part of their stories,” Jennifer Cosgrove said. “We are so proud of them and our lives are so full because of them, and the incredible people we meet through them.”

Ivy just received her running blades a year ago. It was made possible by the generosity of Bob Johnson and “Taylor’s Ride” of 2017.

“These blades have truly changed her life,” Jennifer Cosgrove said.

While Ivy has been able to walk and move about with prosthetics, blades give her much more freedom and ability to just be a kid. What Ivy has now are actually running blades. The design enables a more fluid movement because they bend with her as she moves. For kids the movement is the closest thing to what abled-body kids can do.

Unfortunately, many insurance companies don’t cover this cost because it is deemed a specialty. Since receiving her new blades, Ivy is in regular physical education class with her peers and has run in a 1-mile race this past summer. She is so proud of her blades and how fast she is with them. Both girls are always up for anything – swimming, rock climbing, running and biking using their hand cycles. The sky is the limit for these sisters.

“The blades have added so much to Ivy’s self-confidence,” Jennifer Cosgrove said.

“We can’t wait to see what the coming years have in store for these girls.”

Honoring the

Civil War soldiers The Mukwonago Historical Society and Sons of Union Veterans teamed up to honor the Civil War soldiers buried at

BY Tracy Oak Knoll Cemetery in Mukwonago Ouellette with a headstone presentation and memorial service Aug. 10, at the EDITOR cemetery.

“The Sons have a national initiative to locate Civil War graves and they have been working with us to identify several Civil War veterans buried in our cemeteries,” said Bob Mann of the Sons of Union Veterans. “We’ve been going through and doing sweeps of various cemeteries to identify the veterans and researching their biographies.”

Mann said they have discovered a handful of graves in area cemeteries that were not identified as belonging to Civil War veterans and they have been working to change that – Charles Dillenbeck was one of those soldiers.

The two groups petitioned the U.S. Government to provide a headstone for Dillenbeck, which was installed this summer and was presented at the Aug. 10 ceremony.

“The government paid for the headstone, but we had to raise money to set the stone,” said Henry Hecker of the Mukwonago Historical Society.

The cost to set the stone was about $250 and local businesses donated the money for the setting. They included: Fork in the Road Restaurant, Polka Dots, Sol de Mexico Restaurant, Waukesha State Bank, A Team Computers, Main Street Liquor and Oakton Springs Antiques.

The memorial service honored Dillenbeck, Augustus Cohen and William Stickles specifically, along with all the Civil War veterans.

About the soldiers

Nov. 4, 1864. The men serving in the 2nd battalion of Veteran Reserve Corps, which was made up of men whose disabilities were more serious, who had perhaps lost limbs or suffered some other grave injury.

These veterans were commonly employed as cooks, orderlies, nurses, or guards in public buildings. So although Dillenbeck was disabled he was able to continue to serve his country. Dillenbeck was discharged from service March 19, 1865.

Augustus Cohen was a slave freed by the Emancipation Proclamation that enlisted in the 12th Militia of New York when the Union Army reached Georgia. Later he moved to Mukwonago and became a local hero for saving a young boy from drowning who eventually became a prominent personality in the East Troy/Mukwonago area. Learn more about Cohen and the boy he saved at the event.

William Stickles, of Mukwonago, volunteered for the Union army early in the war and served in the 5th Wisconsin Infantry regiment from June 5, 1861, to July 29, 1864, when he was mustered out.

Charles Dillenbeck enlisted in Company B of the 106th New York Volunteer Infantry in Morristown, NY. He served three years.

He was mustered into service Feb. 14, 1862. The 106th saw action in the Army of the Potomac; at Winchester, Bristoe Station, Mine Run, Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg.

In 1864 the 106th was heavily engaged and sustained heavy casualties in battle at Cold Harbor, Monocacy and Cedar Creek.

Mukwonago High School band students offered a flag delivery service during the summer.

As a member of this unit, which was a part of the famed Army of the Potomac, he fought in many of the famous battles in the Eastern front during the Civil War, including the Peninsula campaign under General George McClellan, Chancellorsville under General Joe Hooker, and The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg all under the command of Generals George

Meade and U.S. Grant.

After the war he returned to Mukwonago and was a wellknown citizen until his death in April 1923.

At the ceremony, his skills and prowess both on the battlefield and in the community before and after the war were highlighted.

our parks VILLAGE OF MUKWONAGO The Village of Mukwonago park and open space system consists of 526.20 total acres of public park land and special use areas, including public school facilities, under the control of the Village.

The system includes a full range of developed facilities including neighborhood parks, community parks and special use areas located throughout the Village of Mukwonago, as well as a wealth of preserved environmental corridor and natural area sites.

Summerfeste and Croatian Day Picnic.

An 800-square-foot open pavilion located near the children’s play area provides shelter from the sun and rain as well as provides relaxation for those enjoying the park. The pavilion is host to many family, friends and business picnics throughout the summer.

The park and pavilion may be rented out on a first-come-first-serve basis starting Jan. 1 of each year. For the rates and application for renting Field Park, go to villageofmukwonago. com.

Miniwaukan Park

Miniwaukan Park is at the end of McKenzie Road, behind the Mukwonago Industrial Park and Field Park is on the southwest corner Meadow Park Estates Subdivision, and is mainly used by youth sports of the intersection of highways 83 and NN and is the most widely used park in organizations such as Mukwonago Area Soccer Club and Mukwonago Braves the Village of Mukwonago.

Minor Park

Minor Park can be found on Highway LO just east of Highway I. It is home to the Mukwonago Women’s Softball League. Two softball diamonds and a wooded picnic area with a small open shelter make up Minor Park.

Beautiful oak trees and landscape draw many photographers to the park for wedding and class photos.

Indianhead Park

Indianhead Park is on Highway ES, adjacent to Phantom Lake and to the north of the Village Hall.

The park lies along the Mukwonago River, and it features a small, open pavilion, a beach and plenty of open space for other sports. A walking path cuts across the park for easy access to the Village Hall from Front Street. Large

The dragon roller coaster always gives the kids a thrill at the Mukwonago Lions Club’s annual Summerfeste celebration in 2019. Summerfeste traditionally runs over the Father’s Day weekend and features a carnival, games, live music, softball tournament and a Father’s Day parade on Sunday.

Phantom Glen Park

Phantom Glen Park sits at the end of Andrews Street, along Phantom Lake.

The small, quaint park consists of an open shelter with electricity and is ideal for a small, intimate gathering of friends and family.

Washington Avenue Park

Washington Avenue Park is in the block bordered by Park Avenue on the north, Washington Avenue on the South, Franklin Street on the West and Division Street on the East, directly next to the Mukwonago Community Library.

The park offers a basketball court and a baseball diamond, as well as plenty of open space for other recreational activities.

All Village parks are rented on a firstcome-first-serve basis and can only be rented during the current year.

Lauren Park is at W315 S8555 Highway EE. The park has electricity, picnic tables, sand volleyball courts, baseball fields, playground and a pavilion.

Oak Ridge Park

Oak Rideg Park is at W304 S8000 Oakridge Drive.

The park has soccer and baseball

fields, picnic tables and a pavilion.

WAUKESHA COUNTY

Mukwonago County Park

Mukwonago Park, W325, S9945 Beulah Road, is part of the Waukesha County Park system.

The 355-acre park site includes a high ridge formed during the last glacial period, which stretches nearly the length of the park. The oak opening ridge is covered with pre-settlement vegetation including burr oak, shagbark hickory, and ground cover of prairie plants.

Mukwonago Park Dog Exercise Area, W325 S9925 Beulah Road, is open daily. Daily park entrance fees apply.

Park hours are sunrise to 10 p.m., year round. In summer the beach is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
