Dec. 14, 2012, a man blasted his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School with an assault rifle. In less then 10 minutes, he had fatally shot 20 children (6 to 7 years olds) and six adult staff members.

As police arrived on the scene, the shooter took his own life. In the wake of the horrific act of violence, parents and family members of the Sandy Hook victims have started numerous charitable organizations. They work at partnering atrisk kids with therapeutic animals, focus on gun safety practices and fund research into the connections between mental illness and violence.

Their mission is to educate and empower parents, schools and communities about mental health and wellness so that they can identify, intervene, and help at-risk individuals. Programs created are teaching school children to recognize and reduce

social isolation.

One organization in particular is called Sandy Hook Promise, which was founded

by Nicole Hockley and Mark Barden, who both lost their beautiful boys at the Sandy Hook shooting. The non-profit organization is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook.

The “Start with Hello” week was a program/contest created to help teach students to reach out and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation.

Mukwonago High School senior Brenna McCormack, school’s youth safety club, took that simple phrase to the next level when she and some friends decided to lead the program at Mukwonago High. The “Start with Hello” week, which occurred in February 2017, made materials and suggestions available to thousands of schools and youth organizations across the country. They encouraged many social

Sarah Dianich, dean of students and English teacher at MHS, said she is proud of the recognition. She feels the award is the result of a long history of encouraging positive peer interactions and educating about bullying and social isolation.

Dianich the school’s chapter of Students Against Violence Everywhere more than a decade ago. The SAVE program is introduced and active in the elementary schools in the district in the hope of creating awareness and a connection with peers early on in school.

At the Sandy Hook Promise assembly Sept. 12, 2018, two parents who lost their children in the Sandy Hook shooting honored Mukwonago High School with the Sandy Hook Promise Award.

“Sandy Hook Promise was created on hope and on the promise that we can prevent these acts of violence from

happening,” said Nicole Hockley, cofounder of the Sandy Hook Promise.

Hockley, whose 6-year-old son was killed in the shooting, spoke to the students during the all school assembly.

“It is phenomenal when you think about this community and how they want to spread the message everywhere. I thank all of you here for what you have done,” Hockley said.

The students at Mukwonago High have turned that hope into a reality. They will continue to reach out to each other, be aware and kind, and take the steps necessary to build on to an already solid foundation of students, parents, staff and community.

Junior Nate Wilcher recognizes that saying hello is something so simple, yet has the impact to change someone’s day.

“Be the one to change someone’s day by saying hello,” he said. “One word, one gesture, one difference, one person … leads to many.”

activities and participants created a video to present for the contest.

McCormack’s group organized a variety of incentives to encourage camaraderie.

Students played games, watched videos and participated in other activities demonstrating how easy it is to just say hello and be nice. To unify the staff and students in this program, one day everyone wore green and staff rewarded friendly positive interactions in the hallways.

Mukwonago’s video and positive effort that week won the national contest.

“It feels awesome!” McCormack said.

“I really believe that most people actually did benefit from the week long program.

Everyone took it seriously and the message has continued into this year.”

The students of Mukwonago High School were chosen out of about 1,300 schools and youth organizations across the country. The grand prize included a visit from the founders of the Sandy Hook Promise, a round table discussion,

One Book, One School Elementary students share reading experience

The students at Rolling Hills Elementary School welcomed a special guest in May to celebrate the school’s literacy program – One Book, One School.

Mystic, a 13-year-old Border Collie mix, and owner/humane educator Khris Erickson came to talk about Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County and how it helps animals.

Mystic did some tricks for the kids and provided a connection to the book chosen for the third annual One Book, One School – “Because of Winn-Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo, which is a Newbery Honor and Parent’s Choice awards winner.

The story takes place in Florida where a young girl named Opal lives with her preacher father.

One day, she ventures into a local grocery store (Winn-Dixie) and

rescues a stray dog. She names the dog Winn Dixie and with her new companion by her side, Opal spends the summer learning about friendship, kindness, and compassion.

The all-school read offered the kids adventure, humor, joy and sadness, acceptance and forgiveness. All kindergarten through sixth-grade students, faculty, staff and parents celebrated the book through discussions, activities and shared reading.

All the Rolling Hills students received their own copy to keep.

“Reading as a community creates excitement, engagement and a support for literacy,” Principal Mike Marincic said. “Reading together promotes discussion, increases comprehension and challenges thinking.”

Students read the book over a three week period following the visit by Mystic.

“We’ll be fully stocked for the holidays too,” Jennifer Thomas said. “We’ll have live and artificial trees, Christmas shopping, wreaths, all the greens people use, ornaments, poinsettias and more.”

As part of the greenhouse’s community outreach, Jennifer Thomas said she’s been working with Next Step Life Coach Connie Lelivelt in Waterford and giving

the students an opportunity to work at the garden center. The students, who Jennifer Thomas said are “differently abled” have been putting in hours all winter and spring.

“They’ve been a huge help,” Thomas said. “We’ve had them planting, tagging, pricing, anything they can do. We love having them.”

Gardeners who might have been dismayed when 3D Greenhouses and Gifts closed in Mukwonago last year can rest easy with the opening of Thomas’ Greenhouse and Gardens in the same location in spring of 2018.

Jennifer Thomas, owner of the new garden center, said talks with ProHealth, which owns the land, began almost as soon as 3D announced its closure.

“Our lease started in January and we’ve been working hard ever since to get things ready for the planting season,” Thomas said.

Thomas is leasing 12 acres total with about 5 or 6 of them in operation in spring 2018.

Thomas grew up around greenhouses with her father running a gardening center for about 45 years.

“And now my son’s working with it, so we’re third generation in the business,” she said.

Thomas’ husband is also a long-time gardener with 25 years of experience in the business and has been instrumental in getting everything planted for the season.

“Of course we’re the owners and we’re biased, but it’s just awesome,” Jennifer Thomas said. “We grow almost all of our own flowers and perennials even for the baskets, which we have in every shape and size.

“To see all we’ve accomplished, especially in our first year, it’s very exciting. We’ve had a few growing pains, and we’ve learned from them. It’s different growing at this level.”

The gardening center runs eight full greenhouses and offers a large variety of flowers and plants.

The Thomases gave the retail space a full makeover when they came in and stocked it from top to bottom with everything a garden enthusiast could want.

“We’re really excited about the different things we have here,” Jennifer Thomas said.

“And if someone is looking for something specific that they don’t see, we want them to let us know and we’ll get it in. We want our customers to have a good experience.

“They might be looking for something 3D had and we don’t, so we want to be able to get it for them.”

From Braves to Indians Youth football program sets athletes up for success

For the past 35 years, volunteer coaches have been preparing the Braves to be an intricate part of the Indian football program at Mukwonago High School.

The Braves program, for kids in fifth through eighth grade, is structured so the young athletes learn the proper fundamentals and techniques of offense and defense that the varsity players run. The goal is to prepare the Braves for their transition into high school as future Indian football players.

From July 19 to 21, 2018, Mukwonago held its annual “Braves to Indians” football camp.

The three-day camp is a “no helmets, no pads” camp focusing on technique and fundamentals basic to the game of football. Young athletes from Mukwonago and surrounding communities gathered at Hensler Field-some walking on turf for the first time.

Each player was instructed with offensive and defensive positions with others of compatible ages. The camp was led by volunteer coaches, including Indians varsity head coach Mike Gnewuch, the Indian assistant coaches, Braves coaches, guest coaches, Mukwonago players and collegiate LISA SMITH Our Town alumni.

Field Park

Miniwaukan Park Miniwaukan Park is at the end of McKenzie Road, behind the Mukwonago Industrial Park and Meadow Park Estates Subdivision, is mainly used by youth sports organizations such as Mukwonago Area Soccer Club and Mukwonago Braves Football.

Miniwaukan Park features one football field, six soccer fields, six baseball fields, a Frisbee-golf course, and a newly launched Born Learning Trail.

Minor Park Minor Park can be found on Highway LO just east of Highway I. It is home to the Mukwonago Women’s Softball League. Two softball diamonds and a wooded picnic area with a small open shelter make up Minor Park.

Beautiful oak trees and landscape draw many photographers to the park for wedding and class photos.

Indianhead Park Indianhead Park is on Highway ES, adjacent to Phantom Lake and to the north of the Village Hall.

The park lies along the Mukwonago River, and it features a small, open pavilion, a beach and plenty of open space for other sports. A walking path cuts across the park for easy access to the Village Hall from Front Street. Large See Our parks, Page 10

Field Park is on the southwest corner of the intersection of highways 83 and NN and is the most widely used park in the Village of Mukwonago.

The park has a 3,000-squarefoot pavilion, which includes a full kitchen, a baseball diamond and an encompassing walking path surrounded by many large oak trees. It is home to such events as Maxwell Street Days,

Mukwonago Summerfeste and Croatian Day Picnic.

An 800-square-foot open pavilion located near the children’s play area provides shelter from the sun and rain as well as provides relaxation for those enjoying the park. The pavilion is host to many family, friends and business picnics throughout the summer.

Phantom Glen Park Phantom Glen Park sits at the end of Andrews Street, along Phantom Lake.

The small, quaint park consists of an open shelter with electricity and is ideal for a small, intimate gathering of friends and family.

Washington Avenue Park Washington Avenue Park is in the block bordered by Park Avenue on the north, Washington Avenue on the South, Franklin Street on the West and Division Street on the East, directly next to the Mukwonago Community Library.

The park offers a basketball court and a baseball diamond, as well as plenty of open space for other recreational activities.

All Village parks are rented on a firstcome-first-serve basis and can only be rented during the current year.

WAUKESHA COUNTY

Mukwonago County Park Mukwonago Park, W325, S9945 Beulah Road, is part of the Waukesha County Park system.

The 355-acre park site includes a high ridge formed during the last glacial period, which stretches nearly the length of the park. The oak opening ridge is covered with pre-settlement vegetation including burr oak, shagbark hickory, and ground cover of prairie plants.

CyberPatriot teams bring home awards from state competition environment was astonishing.

“Practicing only an hour and a half a week since September and competing at school on weekends, team 10-2212 Gold placed 209th (top 11 percent) and team 10-2207 placed 576th (top 30 percent) out of 1885 teams in their division nationwide.

I couldn’t be more proud of what these students accomplished as both their teacher and coach.”

Established by AFA in 2009, CyberPatriot is designed to excite, educate, and motivate students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines critical to our nation’s future.

CyberPatriot’s core program – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition – challenges teams of students across the United States, Canada, and from DoDD schools abroad, to find and resolve cyber security vulnerabilities in simulated environments. Top teams from the preliminary online rounds earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Baltimore,

Maryland, for the in-person National Finals Competition, where students compete for national recognition and scholarships.

The CyberPatriot field is divided into three divisions – the Open Division for public, private, and homeschool teams; the All Service Division for JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and Naval Sea Cadet Corps teams; and the Middle School Division.

Based on the results of two preliminary rounds, CyberPatriot X high school teams were categorized within their divisions as Platinum, Gold, or Silver Tier teams, with Platinum Tier teams representing the highest scoring teams.

Following the Regional/Category Round and Middle School Division Semifinals Round, top teams in the Open and All Service Divisions’ Platinum Tier and the top three Middle School Division teams nationally will advance to the CyberPatriot X National Finals Competition in Baltimore, in April.

OUR TOWN 2018-19

Two teams of students from Mukwonago High School competed in the 10th season of CyberPatriot – the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition – in early 2018.

The MHS 10-2212 Gold team’s performance earned it Wisconsin’s thirdplace Platinum Tier Award. The MHS 102207 Blue team’s performance earned it Wisconsin’s second-place Gold Tier Award and a spot in the Gold Tier Semifinal Round held this month.

Led by coach Cory Mack and mentor Mark Krzyszkowski, the two Mukwonago teams competed in the CyberPatriot X State Round Jan. 19 to 21, 2018, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills, and technical knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity.

“As our team’s first year in the competition, both teams exceeded my wildest expectations,” Mack said.

“Watching these young adults tackle cybersecurity issues as teenagers that would only be found in a professional workplace

A construction project set to begin early in 2019 will transform ProHealth Care’s Mukwonago medical campus into a complete community hospital. The project will include the addition of 24 inpatient rooms and surgical services.

ProHealth Care unveils design of Mukwonago hospital

The hospital was designed with the input of ProHealth patients from the Mukwonago area. The design emphasizes natural light with windows in every patient room providing scenic views.

The hospital is expected to add about 100 new jobs in the community. Nursing, surgical, management, pharmacy, food service and other positions will be among those added.

ProHealth’s Mukwonago campus already is home to a wide variety of medical services. The ProHealth Medical Group clinic there offers primary care and walkin care. The campus also is home to the UW Cancer Center at ProHealth Care, a ProHealth Heart and Vascular Care clinic, an emergency department, a rehabilitation gym, laboratory services and advanced imaging services. These services will all continue to be offered without interruption during construction.

Specialty services provided at Mukwonago campus include: allergy, audiology, behavioral health, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, family medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, medical oncology, nephrology,

neurology, obstetrics, occupational medicine, occupational therapy, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatrics, physical therapy, podiatry, pulmonology, radiation oncology, rehabilitation, rheumatology, sports medicine, travel medicine, urogynecology, urology and women’s sexual health.

The number of specialty services is expected to expand as the campus is transformed into a hospital.

The Mukwonago hospital will be the fourth in the ProHealth system. ProHealth currently provides inpatient services at ProHealth Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital and ProHealth Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin in Waukesha.

ProHealth’s Mukwonago campus was expanded in 2015 with the opening of a 66,000-square-foot emergency department.

Construction is now nearing completion on a 31,000-square-foot addition that will include new physician offices, procedure space and digestive health services. It is expected to open early in December.

The new hospital is being designed by Eppstein Uhen Architects.

ukwonago’s new hospital will feature a three-story glass façade and multiple design elements aimed at promoting healing and reducing stress.

ProHealth Care unveiled the design in Oct. 12 after submitting plans to the Village of Mukwonago Plan Commission.

The new hospital will be created through the expansion of ProHealth’s existing medical campus at 240 Maple Ave. and the renovation of existing space.

The project will include: 24 private inpatient rooms; a surgery and procedure center; expanded and enhanced laboratory, imaging and registration areas and a fullservice kitchen and dining area.

The new hospital will combine primary and specialty care, 24/7 emergency services, inpatient and outpatient surgery, outpatient services, advanced diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and a cancer center, all in one convenient location along Highway 83, just off Interstate 43.

Construction is expected to begin early in 2019. The hospital will open early in 2020.
