Step by step: Tips for preventing falls Few things are more important to older adults than their independence -- being able to do what they’d like when they’d like. But independence can be fleeting.

Something unexpected, like a fall, can change everything. That’s why it’s important for older adults and their loved ones to take steps now to reduce the risk of a fall from happening.

Three million older people are treated in emergency rooms each year because of injuries caused by falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This includes broken bones and head injuries that can rob individuals of their freedom. Even having a fear of falling can restrict individuals from enjoying their life to the fullest.

Thankfully, many falls can be prevented with a little forethought and advance planning, according to Dr. J.B. Sobel, chief medical officer for Medicare, with Cigna, one of the nation’s largest insurers, which serves hundreds of thousands of older adults through its Medicare plans. Dr. Sobel recommends older adults take the following precautions to prevent falls and increase their peace of mind.

Get an annual eye exam More than 12 million Americans aged 40 years and older experience vision impairment, putting them at greater risk of falling. It’s important for them to get an annual eye exam and make sure that they wear their glasses as instructed.

Many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, such as those offered through Cigna, provide some vision coverage at no extra cost.

Review medications

People tend to take more medications as they age. Some of these medications, or a combination of medications, can cause dizziness or confusion, resulting in falls. Seniors should talk to their doctor or pharmacist about the medicines they are taking, including over-the-counter medications, regarding any interactions or unwanted side effects.

Do strength and balance exercises Regular exercise strengthens muscles and improves balance and flexibility, helping reduce the chance of falls.

Many MA plans include a fitness benefit at no extra cost. The benefit may include kits, bands and videos that can be used at home to help limit exposure to COVID-19, while achieving the benefits of exercise.

Patients should always talk to their doctor about what exercises are right for them.

Limit alcohol consumption Even a small amount of alcohol can affect a person’s balance and reflexes, leading to a fall. According to the National Institute on Aging, alcohol is a factor in 60 percent of falls in older Americans.

For those individuals who may need it, Medicare covers alcohol abuse screening, counseling and treatment. Please be sure to discuss these types of issues with your doctor.

Ensure a safe home Seniors can benefit from having grab bars installed inside and outside the bathtub tub or shower and next to the toilet, as well as having railings installed on both sides of stairs. Also, potential tripping hazards, such as floor mats, area rugs or extension cords, should be removed or taped down, both inside and outside the home.

Be careful with face masks Wearing a face mask is a reality of the times, even after a COVID-19 vaccination,

but face masks can restrict peripheral vision. When wearing a face mask, make sure it is snug covering both your nose and mouth, and take slow and measured steps.

Those who wear glasses should wash the lenses with soap and water (if permitted by the manufacturer), shake off the excess liquid and allow them to air dry. This can help provide a fog barrier.

“Today, many older adults take good care of themselves and feel younger than they are,” Sobel said. “They are rightfully proud and don’t want to make concessions for their age. But a fall can happen to the best of us. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

OSF Ventures, the investment arm of OSF HealthCare and a current CancerIQ user, has joined four other investors in a $14 million Series B financing round to help accelerate growth and implementation of the online screening tool aimed at helping more people detect cancer early or prevent it altogether. OSF Ventures participated in the latest financing that was co-led by Merk Global Health Innovation Fund and Amgen Ventures, along with McKesson Ventures and HealthX Ventures (the latter of which led the Series A funding round).

CancerIQ’s precision health platform includes an innovative online risk assessment that makes it easy to determine an individual’s cancer risk based on family history, genetics, behavior and other factors and then connects them to the best and most innovative approaches to prevention and care.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an estimated 9.5 million missed screenings and has led to an increase in late-stage cancer diagnoses that are more costly and have a greater impact on quality of life and outcomes than earlystage diagnoses. With that, the company believes its tool can help providers prioritize patients for fast-tracked screening and timely follow-up care.

CancerIQ’s precision health platform is being used by clinicians at more than 180 locations across the country, including at OSF Centers for Breast Health in Peoria and Rockford, and it will soon be implemented for screening Gastroenterology patients in Peoria. The ultimate goal is to expand use throughout OSF hospitals and clinics, including a new comprehensive cancer institute under construction in Peoria that will provide all services and support under one roof.

While investing in your health and wellness can sound like an overwhelming goal, doctors say that there are easy, tangible steps you can take to feel your best and better protect your health.

“It is always the right time to consider your personal goals, and how you can make positive health choices,” says American Medical Association (AMA) president, Gerald E. Harmon, M.D. “Small lifestyle changes today can have a lasting effect in improving your health.”

Not sure where to start? Consider these tips from the AMA: 1. Make sure your family is up-to-date on their vaccines, including the annual influenza vaccine for everyone age six months or older and the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone age five and older. Anyone with questions about the COVID-19 vaccines should speak with their physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers.org.

2. Learn your risk for type 2 diabetes by taking a simple online 2-minute selfscreening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

Steps you take now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

3. Be more physically active. Adults should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

4. Know your blood pressure numbers.

Take the time to visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure -- also known as hypertension -- under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

5. Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Also reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and drink more water instead.

6. If your health care professional determines that you need antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed. Antibiotic resistance is a serious public health problem and antibiotics will not make you feel better if you have a virus, such as a cold or flu.

7. If consuming alcohol, do so in

moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

8. Talk with your doctor about tobacco and nicotine use and quit. Declare your home and car smoke-free to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.

9. If you are taking prescription opioids, follow your doctor’s instructions, store them safely to prevent diversion or misuse, and properly dispose of any leftover medication.

10. Manage stress. A good diet and daily exercise are key ingredients to maintaining and improving your mental health, but don’t hesitate to ask for help from a friend or mental health professional when you need it.

ISP flag will fly atop Capitol dome in April

From his ceremonial office at the Capitol Tuesday, Gov. JB Pritzker proclaimed the 12-month period beginning April 1 as the Illinois State Police centennial year, ordering the ISP flag to fly atop the Capitol dome for the month of April.

The news conference in Pritzker’s office followed an appearance on the Capitol’s east lawn, where a fleet of new black-andwhite squad cars and ISP officers lined up in front of the Abraham Lincoln statue.

Pritzker, at a news conference in his office, told a story of an ISP that formed in 1922 to “maintain order and safety on its massive number of newly paved roads.”

ISP Director Brendan Kelly said the first class of ISP troopers consisted of eight individuals driving motorcycles “that were left over from the First World War.” “It’s safe to say the Illinois State Police has changed an awful lot since then, as threats have evolved over the decades.

As our understanding of public safety has expanded, so too have the duties of the Illinois State Police,” Pritzker said.

Pritzker said ISP duties now include “forensic testing, crime scene services, investigations, intelligence, cybersecurity, disaster response and a spectrum of support for all local law enforcement throughout the state.”

“The makeup of the ranks of our state troopers has changed too. Women and people of color weren’t allowed to serve 100 years ago. Today they are among ISPs highest ranks,” he said.

The centennial event came amid a political backdrop in which crime and the state’s response to it is top of mind in the early stages of the 2022 campaign season in which every seat in the General Assembly and all constitutional offices are up for grabs, including the governorship.

That much has been evident in the campaign materials from Pritzker’s Republican challengers who are aiming to peg Democrats as soft on crime. And it was evident Monday night when a Pritzker appointee to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board received just half of the votes needed for approval in a Senate dominated

by Democrats.

It was also evident in the question-andanswer session following the governor’s news conference, during which Pritzker fielded questions about rising crime,

officer-involved shootings and the political fight for the PRB. “I believe that our police are out there trying to protect our communities as best they can, sometimes in extraordinary and difficult circumstances,” Pritzker said.

“So we ought to stand up for our police, whether they’re state police, local police.

Obviously, where there are police who aren’t doing the job, people who are mishandling their duties, they need to be held accountable for their actions.”

Pritzker acknowledged crime is up across the state and nation, attributing the trends partially to a “pandemic recession.”

“And so we’ve got to make sure that we’re bringing order back, that we’re putting away the people who actually committed crimes. And that means supporting the ISP, it means supporting law enforcement. And I’m going to continue to do that with the work that we do, not only to build up the ISP and local law enforcement, but also to make sure that the laws are adhered to.”

Pritzker’s budget proposal included an $18.6 million increase to the ISP budget to allow for three classes of Illinois State Police cadets. Previously passed infrastructure budgets include crime lab funding as well.

But as Pritzker and Kelly headed out to the Capitol grounds to shake hands with rank-and-file ISP troopers, Richard Irvin, a Republican challenger for governor, issued a news release criticizing the governor’s 2021 signature on a criminal justice reform bill known as the SAFE-T Act. The Irvin release also called attention to the votes of Pritzker Prisoner Review Board appointees who voted to free two individuals who were charged with the 1976 murder of ISP trooper Layton Davis.

One of those individuals, Aaron Hyche, 71, was released on medical parole and suffers from cancer, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Four PRB members with controversial voting histories have exited the board in recent days, one by resignation, one whose appointment was pulled by Pritzker and two who were rejected by the Senate.

Pritzker said the PRB members are charged with examining the original crime, whether the offender is rehabilitated, whether they caused problems while incarcerated and whether they would be a danger to the public.

“It’s very easy just to say, ‘this person committed an awful crime so many years ago,’ and to say, ‘we’re gonna throw away the key, leave them all in prison,’” Pritzker said. “That’s what you’re gonna

end up with. If that’s what people want, well, let’s hear that. But I don’t think that’s what people wanted when we created the Prisoner Review Board.”

Republicans have seized on Pritzker’s signature on the SAFE-T Act, which eliminates cash bail beginning next year in favor of a system prioritizing the offender’s threat level over ability to pay. It’s to be defined in the courts. The bill also requires body cameras be implemented by 2025, a measure which Pritzker said would increase accountability and trust.

The original SAFE-T Act also changed use-of-force guidelines for law enforcement, created a new police certification system and expanded detainee rights.

The GOP has publicized the SAFE-T Act as detrimental to officer morale, blaming it for resignations in sheriff’s offices and police departments across the state and for making recruitment of new officers difficult.

When asked about recruiting officers, Pritzker pointed to a nationwide labor shortage and emphasized the brotherhood of ISP and strong wages as a recruiting hook.

Kelly said law enforcement is a “challenging and difficult job,” but it’s also “a calling” and he’s optimistic recruits will continue to materialize.

“Throughout history, the way the public feels and interacts with law enforcement, that sentiment, it ebbs and flows,” Kelly said. “And I believe we’re at a point where the respect for law enforcement and the desire to make sure that the role of law enforcement is strong, and that it is within the expectations of the public, is moving in a positive direction.”

Pritzker’s proposed budget also includes $4.5 million to fund body cameras for ISP in accordance with a criminal justice reform bill passed one year ago, as well as providing the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board with $10 million for distributing grants to local law enforcement for body cameras.

Pritzker has also touted $240 million in proposed funding as part of a two-year, $250 million commitment to the Reimagine Public Safety Act, which aims at investing violence prevention resources in some of the state’s most dangerous areas. Of that, $235 million is funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Gov. JB Pritzker awarded retired Illinois State Police Captain Donald Norton with the Illinois State Police Achievement Medal Tuesday to honor his 30 years of service to ISP. Norton, now 91, served from 1960 to 1990 in the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation and Division of Narcotic Control, and was commander of Illinois State Police District 3, now known as District Chicago.

He was previously awarded the Medal for Honor, which is awarded to Illinois State Police personnel who perform a heroic act that “by its nature results in saving a life, preventing a serious crime, or apprehending a person who committed a serious crime.”

Pritzker said Norton remains committed to ISP, providing military guidon flags for each cadet and recruit class for several years. Norton has also developed flags for the office of the ISP director, first deputy director and each division. Pritzker said those flags will be encased at a 100th anniversary ceremony this Friday.

“A veteran of the Korean War and the US Department of Justice, Captain Norton has spent more than 50 years in service of his community, to his state, and to his country,” Pritzker said. “He is among the very best of Illinois. So without further ado, it is my honor to bestow the ISP Achievement Medal on him today.”

Norton thanked the governor for his efforts on behalf of ISP and for attending ceremonies for officers killed in the line of duty.

Pritzker bestowed the medal in his Capitol office on Tuesday as part of a commemoration of the Illinois State Police’s 100th anniversary.

Vella-supported proposal would reduce eligible seniors’ vehicle registrations to $10 State Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, wants to see vehicle registration costs reduced to $10 for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities.

“The pandemic in particular has been rough on older residents, and we should be doing what we can to help them,” Vella said.

“Many of our seniors are on a fixed income, so let’s try to save them some money.”

Vella sponsored and voted for House Bill 5304, which simply reduces the cost of a vehicle registration from $24 to $10 for eligible seniors and persons with disabilities.

Eligibility depends on income, with households containing one person limited to an income threshold of $33,562; households with two residents at $44,533; and households with three or more people at $55,500. Seniors must be age 65 or older.

House Bill 5304 is currently under consideration in the Senate.

“If seniors are interested in learning about other programs that can save them money, they should give my office a call at 815-3296741,” Vella said.

“For those who can no longer drive, we can see if they are eligible to sign up for the Benefit Access Program and receive free public transit rides. We’re here to help.”

Dr. Rizzo speaks on behalf of the American Lung Association when he encourages all adults 65 and older to speak with their doctor about vaccination. But he knows all too well that there are disparities among who is most likely to be protected against this potentially serious lung infection.

While the overall vaccination rate among adults 65 and older was 59 percent in 2017, only 42% of Latino/ Hispanic individuals were vaccinated. And with only 45 percent percent of Black adults and 56 percent of Asian adults vaccinated, the gap in coverage has potentially serious consequences for communities of color.

Additionally, Latino and Black Americans are at greater risk of developing chronic health conditions such as asthma and diabetes compared to white

Americans, which further increases their risk of getting pneumococcal pneumonia.
