Gage offers tips for getting boats back on the water impeller cools the engine when it’s running,” said Matt Oglesby, marine services manager at Gage Marine. In the spring, in addition to maintenance Oglesby said activating a boat – after it’s been winterized – is necessary to get it ready for boating season. “One thing we do with every boat after

maintenance and activation is a lake test with a certified technician to make sure everything is operating as it should and is safe,” Oglesby said. The lake test consists of watching for water leaks on the engine and hoses, he said. Included in the activation is checking all the 12-volt accessories such as navigation lights, the horn, the bilge pump and bilge blower. ~ continued on 4

The top priority in preparation By Heather for a safe boating season this Ruenz spring and summer is preventative STAFF WRITER maintenance, according to service staff at Gage Marine. “Preventative maintenance is No. 1, such as oil changes, engine tune-ups, servicing the drive and changing the impeller if needed. “It’s all about people being safe on the water,” Oglesby said. Though not essential to a boat operating properly, he said taking care of cosmetic issues not only makes the boat look better but can make it last longer. “People can wax it, shampoo the carpets and use a vinyl cleaner for the inside,” Oglesby said. “The lakes in this area also leave water spots, and white vinegar is good for removing those.” Boats that have bottom paint and stay in the water also need to be painted periodically, he said, because that protects the hull and deteriorates over time. Gage Marine also stores and maintains sailboats, with much of the work similar to what’s done on powerboats, said Jim Molick, assistant service manager. “Where it’s different is the masts have to be put up and the sails put on,” Molick said. “We do that on the lakefront and will put in new sails and new lines and make sure everything is secure.” Molick said some customers take care of those things themselves, but Gage handles almost all of the rigging. The service staff at Gage Marine is willing to teach customers how to take care of maintenance tasks on their boats, and Oglesby said September is a good time of year for that.

In addition to what Oglesby referred to as “a la carte” maintenance – smaller jobs, as needed – Gage Marine offers two maintenance plans: One includes the mechanical maintenance and the second also includes cosmetic maintenance. Gage also services boat trailers, including inspecting the brakes and bearings, lights, bunks or rollers, and the hitch and latch. “Those things are important, not only legally like the tail and brake lights, but also for safety reasons,” Oglesby said. The canvas cover is another key item in keeping the boat in good shape, he said. “It keeps the water out of the boat and helps prevent mold and mildew while keeping the sun off the upholstery,” Oglesby said. “A boat canvas will usually last about six to 10 years, depending on the color of the canvas and where

the boat is located. But if it’s outside all year, a canvas might only last a few years.” Staff at Gage Marine will make service calls to boaters on the water or at their personal dock if need be. “We’ll go out and help with lighter mechanical work, like changing a battery, but if it’s something major we tow it back to our shop,” Molick said. Gage Marine also helps get wood boats in the water – which is an entirely different process than other boats, particularly the older models. “There is no bare wood, so the elements can’t touch it,” Oglesby said. “The engine is similar, but the boats have to be stored in the winter in proper humidity conditions. “In the spring, some wood boats need to be soaked in the water so the wood can swell back up. It can take one day up to a week,” Molick added. “One of the worst things would be to launch a boat that needed to be soaked because it’ll probably sink,” Oglesby said. Oglesby and Molick recommend that boat owners take their watercraft to dealers authorized to work on the type of engine the boat has to ensure maintenance and repairs are done properly. The engines serviced by Gage include outboards by Mercury, Evinrude and Yamaha; inboard/outboards by Volvo Penta and MerCruiser; and inboards by Ilmor and Indmar. Gage sells Boston Whaler, Bennington, Mastercraft, Chris Craft and Monterey boats. The final tip Oglesby and Molick offered is a reminder to have the proper safety equipment onboard, including a working fire extinguisher, a life jacket for each person and an approved, throwable device. “The goal is to make sure customers have a fun, safe season,” Molick said. “And make memories for a lifetime,” Oglesby added.

homeowners and visitors to get to homes and various resorts, according to the website. In 1916, the cruise line arm of Gage Marine purchased property in Williams Bay as a service and winter storage facility for its fleet. Soon, owners began bringing their boats in for service. In 1958, the Gage family bought the excursion business and kicked the marina facility into high gear. In the 1960s, the company introduced the first indoor storage facility in the area, and about a decade later it brought the only travel lift to the lake. Gage Marine has two locations – 1 Leichty Drive in Williams Bay and 5167 Wisconsin Highway 50, Delavan. The latter includes the service department. For more information, call 262-245-5501 or 262-740-2628 or visit gagemarine.com. The Lake Geneva Cruise Line operates boat tours, weather permitting, until the end of October. The full summer boat tour schedule for 2018 runs June 15 through Labor Day, Sept. 3. A limited daily schedule is offered April 28 through June 14 and after Labor Day through Oct. 31. Finding the right

boat dealer While you’re comparing boats, don’t forget that the dealer you decide to do business with will have a huge impact on your boat-buying and ownership experience. Depending on your location, there might be only one who carries the model of boat you really want. However, if you’re torn between two or three models from different brands and different dealers, the quality of the dealership and its staff may well sway your decision. Some points of comparison are relatively easy to figure out. For instance, if you are partial to an engine make, a dealer who services that engine might rank higher than another dealer. Other factors – such as customer service and commitment to the brand of boat you’d like to purchase and more – can be harder to determine. Here are some elements to look for at the dealership to identify dealers who are more likely to enhance your buying experience:

When shopping for a dealer to purchase your new boat or watercraft from, be sure to take into consideration the dealership’s location, references, certifications and helpfulness of the staff.

Do you like the staff?

Does the store staff seem happy? And do you like the staff? If you find that people in the store are attentive, engaging and genuinely happy to see you, it bodes well for the future. Plus, it’s always nice to work with people you like and, unlike a traditional retail interaction, a boat dealership is one business that you’ll likely develop an ongoing relationship with.

Check it out

If the positive reports far outweigh the critical posts, it’s likely a good reflection of their overall customer service. Talk with existing customers and local boaters. Don’t be afraid to ask for references. You’d expect the same during a job interview. And if you have friends, neighbors or coworkers who recently have purchased a boat, see how they felt about their dealership experience.

Is the staff responsive?

Has the dealership been certified or received any industry awards or local community accolades? A Marine Industry Certified Dealership has made a commitment to putting customers first. It begins with the Consumer Bill of Rights setting the bar to provide outstanding and ever-improving customer sales and service experience. If a dealership participates in the Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index program and has received CSI awards, it is a good sign that it has a culture of top-quality customer care. Boating Industry’s Top 100 dealer list includes some of the most customer-centric dealers in the country. Community involvement is also a sign the dealership has a customer-first organizational focus.

Is it clean?

Look into the service department

Talk to the service manager. Again you are looking for pleasant, helpful people and a relatively clean, organized shop. You want to know that your boat is in good hands. Does the service department hold manufacturer certifications? Many engine manufacturers offer certification programs designed to keep dealer-based mechanics up-todate on the latest technology.

Consider the location

Is the dealership conveniently located to where your boat will live? Choosing a dealer far from the location where you plan to keep your boat is a huge disadvantage. A good practice is to purchase your boat from the dealership you plan to have it serviced. For more information, visit www. discoverboating.com.

Page 5

Are the yard and showroom clean and organized? That is usually an attribute of a well-

run organization and indicator how they’ll care for you and your boat after the sale.

MAY 2018

Is the staff prompt in returning phone calls and emails? A salesperson’s willingness to work with you by phone or email is a great timesaver and a positive sign for the future. Make sure to ask for an email confirmation of any agreements or details worked out by phone.

Do they have certification?

boating No matter whether you bought new or preowned, your first months with your boat are sure to be filled with plenty of excitement. There are always more places to explore and activities to enjoy with a boat. No matter your favorite activity, any of these activities are sure to keep you enthusiastic about your next time on the water.

Fishing

Dealers are aware many customers are looking for new experiences, and as such many plan getaways to locations outside their customer’s normal boundaries. These trips aren’t just for those with bigger boats. Trailer boat excursions put boaters both on the road and on the water; overnight or multiday trips encourage those with overnight accommodations to actually spend the night aboard. Boat camping is also a popular activity. Sleep aboard under the stars or pitch a tent on a picturesque beach. Just don’t forget to pack the cooler! It’s fun to be in the boat, but it’s also fun to be behind it as well, skimming along the water on the latest towable. Inflatables are the easy choice, a one-size-fits-most option that doesn’t require much athletic skill or balance. Just hang on for the ride while a responsible driver swings you in and out of the wake. For those looking for a greater challenge, skiing and wakeboarding are always popular, enabling riders to zip in and out of the wakes or even soar high above them. The latest craze, wakesurfing, also is rapidly growing in popularity. It requires inboard, jet drive or forward-drive propulsion, but allows any rider to experience the thrill of surfing, no ocean required.

Every lake, river or waterway has its unofficial “party cove,” a gathering spot where fellow boaters anchor, nose into the sandbar or “raft up” to socialize and share in the pleasure of boating. Find one that fits your style and join in on the fun. Many boats are designed to enhance the experience, with aft seating areas, extended swim platforms and boarding ladders to encourage passengers to ease in and out of the water. You may even find a transom remote to control the stereo. Another benefit of coving? It allows you to enjoy the boating lifestyle while not using fuel.

Good news? In most states, no license is required under 16 years of age, meaning kids are free. HOMES & DESIGN • LAKE LIVING

In the most recent year with complete data, the U.S. Coast Guard reports that there were 4,062 recreational boating accidents in the United States and its territories in which 626 lives were lost and 2,620 were injured. Almost 76 percent of the fatal accident victims drowned, and of these, 85 percent were reported as not wearing a life jacket. Eight out of every 10 boaters who drowned were using boats less than 21 feet in length. Boating while intoxicated is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 17 percent of the deaths. Operators with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent (for most of us, that means just one to three beers) are 10 times as likely to be killed in a boating accident as a sober boater. Additional contributing factors for deaths were hazardous waters, operator inattention, weather, operator inexperience, excessive speed, improper lookout, drug

use, navigation rules violation, sharp turn, restricted vision, failure to vent and inadequate onboard navigation lights. The American Boating Association encourages every boater to be serious about boating safety, starting with the proper kind and amount of boater training. Remember, a boating mishap or fatality often involves innocent people who share in none of the blame, but all of the consequence. As a responsible boater, the life you save may very well be someone else’s. Remember, BE SAFE and know your:

Awnings can make outdoor spaces more comfortable Many homeowners are eager to step outdoors upon the return of warm weather. Outdoor living spaces have grown in popularity as more and more homeowners embrace opportunities to entertain and lounge around in their yards. Outdoor entertaining areas can be great, but such spaces may go unused when summer sun makes it uncomfortable to spend time outdoors. But a retractable awning can change all that. Homeowners often find awnings can be worthwhile investments that can be beneficial both inside and outside of the home.

When renovating outdoor areas, homeowners should not overlook awnings that can make outdoor living spaces more livable.

Increase usable yard space

Awnings can create privacy and establish boundaries for outdoor living areas. Place an awning over a deck, tables and chairs or an entire patio area. Some people like to install awnings over a portion of their pools to provide shade for those who want to escape the sun’s rays. Motorized awnings can be retracted with the push of a button, which can help homeowners with physical limitations.

Protect against sun damage

Awnings provide excellent protection against sun damage because they can shield outdoor furniture from direct sunlight, helping to reduce the chances for discoloration or fading.

protect shade-loving plants from harsh sunlight and filter the sun for plants that require indirect light. They can be placed over a patio container garden or permanent garden structure.

Reduce air conditioning costs

In addition to shading outdoor living areas, smaller awnings can be placed over southern- and western-facing windows, shielding interiors against the sun’s rays. In turn, this may reduce reliance on air conditioners.

Expand gardening possibilities

Some plants require very specific light conditions to grow. Awnings can

Add value for buyers

For those who may be selling their homes soon, an awning may help them receive top dollar. Today’s buyers want houses that have attractive and functional exteriors, and an awning can provide that competitive advantage over similar homes in the neighborhood. (METRO CREATIVE)

Backyard entertaining made easy TIPS FOR THE PERFECT OUTDOOR EVENING

Set the mood

Have enough seats

Ensure there’s enough seating. Keep guests comfortable with adequate seating. This may involve a little creativity. Takes seats from inside the house out to the patio or use stools or benches. You can even lay blankets picnic-style for added seating. Another idea is to rent chairs from a party supply retailer. Some chair rentals can be as low as $2 per chair.

Practice food safety

Make foods and beverages self-service. Running in and out of the house to cater to each individual guest can be tiring. Set up a drink and food station outdoors so guests can help themselves to whatever they like. If you’d like to offer some more specialized attention, use a rolling cart to push around a signature drink service and let guests grab a spritzer or another cocktail.

Create a playlist

Bring the music outdoors. Wireless Bluetooth speakers have made it easier to listen to music outdoors. Simply create a playlist and relax.

Keep guests comfortable

Make bug spray, light blankets, wraps, sunglasses and other courtesy items easily accessible to guests.

(METRO CREATIVE)

Page 11

Do not leave food sitting out. Inform guests when the food and other refreshments will be served so they can plan accordingly. This maximizes efficiency and prevents food from spoiling. Have nonperishable snacks available for late arrivals.

Self-serve is the way to go

MAY 2018

Create a space that can handle the elements. Keep in mind that Mother Nature can be fickle, and you will have to prepare for different scenarios if you will be hosting outdoors. Much of the stress involving outdoor events revolves around the weather ruining the festivities. This stress can be removed by having a contingency plan. Give guests a spot where they can escape the elements. Renting a tent or a canopy is an easy solution. A tent or canopy will offer shade in bright sunlight and keep guests dry if clouds roll

in. When the weather is cold, a tent with side flaps can serve as a buffer against the chill.

Taking the party outdoors is an easy way to expand a guest list and create space for guests. 4 ways hardscapes can add value to your home Outdoor hardscape projects add resale value to a home as well as bring extra enjoyment to homeowners while they are living in the home, according to the “Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features” by the National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Landscape Professionals. The report confirms that investing in landscaping and hardscaping is a win-win, whether you plan to stay in your home or prepare it for market. “This report validates that outdoor remodeling and landscaping improvements are a necessity when it comes to improving your home’s resale value,” said Missy Henriksen, NALP vice president of public affairs. “Homeowners working with a landscape professional to embark on renovations – whether that means enhancing their turf and growing a lush lawn, overhauling their entire landscape or incorporating new features like patios or exterior fireplaces – can rest assured that they are making a smart, worthwhile investment.”

Curb appeal

Real estate agents suggest that a home’s first impression is paramount when preparing it for sale. Simple updates such as adding retaining wall units or paving stone edging around gardens add value and curb appeal. More ambitious projects like a front paving stone entrance with patio and a seat wall or two add major curb appeal plus the enjoyment factor from adding a beautiful, functional front yard. Varying hardscape colors and textures in the front outdoor living space lends maximum visual appeal. Hardscapes also can make routine maintenance easier, such as creating a tree ring from retaining wall units and surrounding it with pavers to reduce the need for trimming after mowing.

Landscaping and hardscaping will add value to your home. For a project as big as this, experts advise hiring a reputable landscape professional to design and build the structure. STOCK PHOTOS Lake Living

Making unusable space usable

A family in Maple Grove, Minn., had a hill behind their home that sloped down to a pond. They knew that excavating would be required and contacted Villa Landscapes in St. Paul to help them decide how best to make use of the space. “The Versa-Lok Standard retaining wall system was perfect for retaining the soil behind the garage when we excavated to create their outdoor living space,” said Lonny Sekeres, a designer with Villa Landscapes. “There are no voids in the units to backfill, and the top-down pinning system made the installation easy. “By back-splitting the retaining wall units, we easily created matching, freestanding seat walls around the fire feature area, too. Plus, the same unit was used to create columns that provide a base for a pergola while giving a nice definition to the outdoor living space.”

Outdoor living spaces such as this one are very popular. The hardscaping features in this patio are designed to last decades.

Seat walls can add a measure of privacy and protection against the elements, and energyefficient landscape lighting can be installed along patios, paver walkways and under retaining wall caps for nighttime ambiance and functionality. Landscape professionals can suggest how adding these and other hardscape elements can increase value and offer measures of safety and privacy. In the end, investing in your home’s landscape with hardscapes is a long-term win-win, no matter how long you stay in your home or if you are preparing it for sale.

Damage to your property can devalue a home plus create major headaches. Retaining wall systems are essential in preventing erosion, controlling grade changes in a yard, and preventing damage to the landscape, and in certain environments, even damage to your home. One homeowner in Apple Valley, Minn., had a steep, unusable backyard that sloped toward the home’s foundation. Over the years, water damage to the foundation occurred. “The negative flow caused water damage, a leaky foundation and the accumulation of dirt that had been eroding down the slope for years,” said Paul Devine, owner and principal of Devine Design Hardscapes in Rosemount, Minn. “There was no flat, usable area at the base of the hill, and the client had never been able to grow grass because of constant erosion. The Versa-Lok wall design created a positive flow away from the home’s foundation, steps to the top of the hill, and a flat, usable area for a backyard.” Devine created a tiered retaining wall design with ample space for perennials and a staggered staircase with landings that feature seat walls for resting.
