• If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub or spa, be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations. • Have a qualified electrician periodically inspect and – where necessary – replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that keep your pool, spa or hot tub electrically safe. Have the electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency. • Make sure any overhead lines

To reduce the risk of electric shock drowning, never swim near a marina, dock, boatyard or a running watercraft.

• Never swim near a marina, dock or boatyard, or near a boat while it’s running. • While in a pool, hot tub or spa, look out for underwater lights that are not working properly, flicker or work intermittently. • If you feel a tingling sensation while in a pool, immediately stop swimming in your current direction. Try and swim in a direction where you had not felt the tingling. Exit the water as quickly as possible; avoid using metal ladders or rails. Touching metal may increase the risk of shock.

• Avoid entering the water when launching or loading a boat. Docks or boats can leak electricity into the water causing water electrification. • Each year, and after a major storm, have the boat’s electrical system inspected and upgraded by a qualified marine electrician to be sure it meets the required codes of your area, including the American

president. “As incidents of electric shock drowning continue to occur every year, we are collaborating with NFPA to emphasize the importance of regular electrical inspections of pools, boats, and docks performed by qualified electricians to help prevent these tragedies while out on the water.” ESFI has additional spa tips and resources for marina operators on raising awareness of electric shock drowning, as well as steps for keeping marinas and boats safer for patrons. For information and resources about electric shock drowning, visit www.nfpa.org/watersafety and the ESFI website.

Boat and Yacht Council. Check with the marina owner who can also tell you if the marina’s electrical system has recently been inspected to meet the required codes of your area, including the National Electrical Code. • Have ground fault circuit interrupters installed on the boat; use only portable GFCIs or shore power cords (including “Y” adapters) that are “UL-Marine Listed” when using electricity near water. Test GFCIs monthly. “Many swimmers, boat and marina operators unknowingly place themselves in danger by swimming near electric-powered boats and docks,” said Brett Brenner, ESFI

maintain the proper distance over a pool and other structures, such as a diving board. If you have any doubts, contact a qualified electrician or your local utility company to make sure power lines are a safe distance away.

With summer in full swing, the National Fire Protection Association and Electrical Safety Foundation International are joining forces to remind people about the potential electrical hazards in swimming pools, hot tubs and spas, on board boats and in the waters surrounding boats, marinas and launch ramps. Electric shock drowning can occur when faulty wiring sends an electrical current into the water, which passes through the body and causes paralysis, and ultimately results in drowning. “Most consumers, including boat and pool owners and swimmers, are not aware of the risks of electric shock drowning,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “By sharing our water safety resources, NFPA and ESFI hope to educate people so that they can safely enjoy summer water activities.” ESFI and NFPA have pool and marina safety resources, including tip sheets and infographics, brochures, reference guides and checklists that cover safety devices, common ESD causes and prevention methods, response protocol, and marina electrical safety considerations. ESFI and NFPA also recommend the following tips for swimmers, pool and boat owners:

Cooling off in a pool, lake or ocean can be a refreshing idea—but only if you know how to avoid the dangers. Drowning is a leading cause of death in children under 14. One reason is that 70 percent of African-American and 60 percent of Hispanic children don’t know how to swim, the USA Swimming Foundation reports. Minority children are also less involved in competitive swimming when compared to their white peers, comprising only 1 percent of USA Swimming membership. Some of the reasons include: • Lack of swimming access – Facilities in traditionally underserved communities are few and far between and tend to be expensive. • Cultural constraints – Data shows there may be a legacy of fear, perpetuated through generations. • Parental perceptions – Adults who don’t swim may not know what needs to be done so that their children learn to swim safely. To help close the gap in swimming safety, the YMCA created Safety Around Water, a program that teaches children of all ages and backgrounds – and their parents – that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe.

and an outdoor fire pit area. Villa guests are invited to pamper themselves with a new spa menu featuring treatments, ranging from massages and facials to salon services like manicures and airbrush makeup. Two new spa packages are also offered exclusively at the villas. The “North Shore Package” features a White River Relaxing Massage or Facial and a dry brush exfoliation, and the “Day on the Lake Package” includes a blowout, makeup and lash application. The resort originally opened in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel. The Marcus Corporation purchased this Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired resort in 1993, and reopened it as the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in 1994. Throughout the years, the company has enhanced the property by adding three restaurants, renovating the golf courses, adding Timber Ridge Lodge and Water Park, expanding the meeting spaces, and renovating all of the guest rooms and suites. The new villas will increase the total combined units on the property to more than 600.

JULY 2017

Grand Geneva Resort and Spa recently opened 29 all‐season villas on its 1,300-acre property near Lake Geneva. This multi‐million dollar investment is designed to enhance the resort experience with expanded, upscale accommodations for leisure and business guests alike, according to resort officials. “Ideal for families seeking a vacation with the comforts of home or friends searching for a unique weekend getaway, our new villas truly strengthen our diverse accommodation offerings at the resort,” said Grand Geneva Resort and Spa Managing Director Steve Magnuson. “The addition of these spectacular villas supports our goal of continuing to be a top travel destination in the Midwest.” The new villas feature studio, one-, twoand three-bedroom accommodations. Each unit includes a full kitchen, flat screen TVs, washer and dryer and deluxe furnishings, as well as a furnished outdoor sitting area. Villa guests can enjoy most resort amenities, from activities at the Adventure Center to access to the award-winning golf courses, combined with their own outdoor swimming pool during the summer season

Tucked away on the eastern edge of Lake Lawn Resort’s property not visible from Highway 50 is a miniature golf course that local residents might not be aware of. Next to the resort’s activity center where watersports rentals take place along its two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline is an 18hole course used mostly by resort guests, said Wes Courier, activities director. The course is open to the public – yearround if patrons have the chutzpah to minigolf in February – from morning to night at a cost of $5 per golfer. But, Courier said, few local residents seem to know about the course. “Right now, not many people local know about it,” he said. “We’re trying to do a lot more advertising for the local public.” The un-themed course has all the usual obstacles of a miniature golf course along with a nice rock waterfall, Courier said. The resort has plans to upgrade the course and add a theme and has received bids including one from a company that designed a significant course in Wisconsin Dells, he said. “Right now it’s a nice course, but we’re going to make it into a better course,” he said. Possible themes that have been bandied about are a shipwreck or a pirate theme, Courier said. He said miniature golf is a summer activity that appeals mostly to kids but draws adults who golf along with the kids. Lake Lawn also does some team-building miniature golf activities including glowin-the-dark golf and wacky golf. Glow-inthe-dark balls are used for glow-in-the-dark golf and wacky golf features a different implement at each hole other than a golf club to hit the ball such as a hockey stick, a broom or a cone, Courier said. He said the exercises draw corporate and church groups, family reunions and sports teams.

With 197 boats in the regatta there is not enough pier space, slips or buoys to hold the boats in the water between races during last year’s Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship. After each race the boats are lifted from the lake with a crane and returned to their trailer, then the cranes drop the boats for the next race into the water. This year’s race will be Aug. 16 to 20 at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club and the Buddy Melges Sailing Center.

WATERCRAFT RENTALS PROVE POPULAR IN AREA by Ryan Spoehr STAFF WRITER

As temperatures have risen in the Southern Lakes area people naturally flock to the shoreline. While some own marine vehicles, many people get left behind at the dock. Which begs the question, are there still opportunities for people to get out on the water? The answer is yes. Actually, there are several businesses in the area that serve consumers who may be looking to get out on the water for some recreation. Among those providers is Gordy’s Marine, based in Fontana. “We cater to a large demographic, including families, corporate outings and children wanting to learn watersports,” said Kelley Lynne of Gordy’s Marine. “We do have a large following from the Lake Geneva area and Walworth County, but we also draw from Chicago, Rockford, Milwaukee and Madison.” The newest trend that representatives at Gordy’s have seen, according to Lynne, is wakesurfing, which is a sport that has rider surfing the wake behind a boat without a tow rope. “Wakesurfing programs and camps are trending,” Lynne said. Another new trend is paddleboards, which Gordy’s also rents. “Stand-up paddleboarding is a great way to enjoy beautiful Lake Geneva in a quiet and

peaceful way, while at the same time getting a great workout that improves your balance and core strength,” according to Gordy’s website. Paddleboards are available for 2 hours at $40. For a half-day, the rate is $50. For a full day, the rate is $60. Safety and use instructions are available upon rental. Gordy’s offers rentals of 20-foot and 22-foot

Cobalt bowrider boats by the hour, half-day or full day. The 20-foot boat has six seats. The 22-foot vehicle has eight seats. “We proudly and exclusively rent Cobalt boats,” according to Gordy’s website. The 20-foot Bowrider is available for $139

A versatile option

During a 2016 interview, Michelle Peterson, of Fontana Paddle Company on Geneva Lake, said she rents-out eight paddleboards for every two kayaks when the weather is warm and the lake active. “For the person who just wants to be able to get out on the lake, it’s not nearly as intimidating,” Peterson said of paddleboarding. “They’re more versatile than a kayak.” Peterson said the paddleboard offers a

Combine the functional side of kayaking with the fun of surfing and you arrive at paddleboarding. Water enthusiasts from Bermuda to Lake Tahoe and all the way to England are taking note of the world’s fastestgrowing aquatic recreation activity. Southeast Wisconsin is doing its part to help drive paddleboarding’s popularity. Paddleboards are available for rent on most area lakes, including Geneva Lake and each of the Twin Lakes in Western Kenosha County. According to various published reports

paddleboarding’s origins can be traced to Hawaii, where the activity is known as “Hoe he’e nalu.” The Polynesians used stand-up paddleboards to travel between islands. The activity grew in popularity in the 1960s and again in the 2000s, when windsurfers on Maui took-up the sport. The trend spread to California and eventually the rest of the country and the world. In 2010 the Stand Up Paddle Industry Association formed in Dana Point, Calif., which is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego. SUPIA markets itself as the trade organization of all stand-up paddle businesses.

Whether someone is seeking an adventure or a simple afternoon out on the lake, Twin Lakes Boat Rental has an inventory to suit most needs, according to Dave Lang, a partner in the business. Twin Lakes Boat Rental, LLC, formerly Leslie’s Kayak and Paddleboard, has nearly 50 kayaks, paddleboards and about 20 boats available at two locations. “We got a little bit of everything going on,” said Lang, who operates the business with Ryan LaMeer. Lang, responsible for boat rentals, said the business offers 15 pontoon boats, three fishing boats and two family boats. The assortment, he said, includes a pontoon boat equipped with a Tiki bar and Yamaha surround sound

stereo system. “It looks like a Tiki bar,” Lang said. “It has a Yamaha surround sound stereo system with subwoofers, it fits over 20 people.” That pontoon is ideal for bachelor parties, business parties, and like other boats offered by the company, it is pet-friendly. “All of my boats have sun tops, an auxiliary input for music, so you can go out and enjoy a day on the lake,” Lang said. “They are all petfriendly, we allow pets on everything here.” Cost to rent the Tiki Bar pontoon is $450 for four hours, and for the entire day, it increases to $600. If that is out of a customer’s price range, regular pontoons are rented at $400 for a full day and

or after swimming, sweating and immediately after towel drying. More than half of moms responding believe the proper time to apply sunscreen is as soon as they start feeling skin burn. “By the time you feel your skin burning, the sun’s UV rays are damaging your cells’ DNA. Skin cancers get a foothold when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin cell growth,” says Dr. Kirkpatrick. The cost of sun protection may become a concern as families begin to apply the proper amount of sunscreen. If that is the case, one cost effective choice is NOAD, which offers a selection of products that are affordable and widely available. Beautiful summer skin is all about making safe sun care a habit. A routine is easier when you find products you will love to use. Look for lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas comprised of ingredients that have benefits for skin. For example, Ocean Potion offers formulas with sea kelp, Vitamins D3 and E, and a pleasant orange cream scent. The line is PABA-free, (which is an allergen for some people.) For those who want to avoid the sun altogether, a self-tanner such as Ocean Potion EverGlow, can help you get the sun kissed look without the exposure.

they paddle too far behind,” Peterson said. “You stroke from the front nose of the board to the heel of your foot.” Stroking past the heel of your foot leads to pain in your feet. Peterson said the pain is because you instinctively dig-in with your feet to retain your balance. “On an easy day, take it out and paddle,” Peterson said. “If there’s no wind, you’re going to go forward. The added effort comes into play when conditions are not ideal, and you have winds and waves.” Peterson said she will not rent paddleboards without the user

knowing what they are doing, and her staff will offer instruction to those new to the activity.

(STATEPOINT)

(Continued from page 11)

Technique matters

Precaution reigns Safety must remain a concern when paddleboarding. You’re still on the water, and it is never wise to mess with the lake. Use a personal flotation device. Peterson said a light and a whistle are also good ideas. Peterson also said to only paddleboard when there is a combined temperature of 120 degrees between the air and water.

Page 15

Using a paddleboard is not as easy as hopping on and going about your merry way. Eventually it can be, but technique is important, especially for beginners. “When I look on the lake and see people paddling by – I see it all the time – half the people I see out there are holding the paddle backwards,” Peterson said. Peterson said if the balls of your feet hurt after paddleboarding, you used improper technique. “The biggest mistake they make is

different point of view of the water. She said she often sees people practicing yoga on paddleboards in the middle of Geneva Lake, and said there are paddleboards designed for activities such as fishing, cross fit, yoga and more. Boards designed for physical activity are wider, Peterson said. An average board is 28 to 32 inches wide. Boards designed for activities like exercise or fishing can be up to 36 inches wide. Racing boards are typically 24 to 26 inches wide.

Summertime is all about trips to the pool, beach and park. And it also means time spent in the sun. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, making proper sun protection a must. As you enjoy time outdoors, it’s important to understand and follow sun safety guidelines. A new survey reveals some surprising facts. When moms with children younger than 18 were asked about the correct amount of sunscreen needed to apply to the face and body, fewer than half knew the right amount. And nearly two in 10 were unaware that after an initial slathering of sunscreen, they needed to reapply more. So says a new survey of moms commissioned by NO-AD Sun Care. “The correct amount of sunscreen to be applied – or reapplied – is one ounce,” says Brevard, Florida-based dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick. “Think of a shot glass of sunscreen or an amount the size of a golf ball.” Parents should apply a broadspectrum sunscreen to themselves and children 15 minutes before going out in the sun to give it time to bond to skin, and then reapply at least every two hours

to help you savor a great grilling season

Some food/seasoning pairings are obvious, like apples and cinnamon or fish and lemon pepper. However, a wide range of seasonings can elevate the flavor of a variety of foods. Here are a few creative pairings to try this summer grilling season: • Cardamom – Pork, apples, pears, citrus fruits, cabbage and carrots; • Cloves – Beef, pork, sweet potatoes, onions, apples, pears, citrus fruits and peaches; • Cumin – Hamburgers, pork, chicken (marinades), tofu, tempeh and cabbage; • Ginger – Steak, chicken, fish, seafood and fruits; • Marjoram – Burgers, chicken, fish, lamb, poultry and vegetables; • Poppy seed – Potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and zucchini; • Saffron – Chicken and fish; and • Turmeric – Lamb, beans and zucchini. Of course, seasonings can add flavor to food in multiple ways. For example, if you’re soaking vegetables or fruit before grilling, you can add herbs and spices to the soaking water. Flowers are blooming, days are getting longer and temperatures are warmer – you can probably recognize all the signs that grilling season has arrived! But do you know how to best season all the fresh foods you’ll grill this summer? Sure, a dash of salt and pepper may be all you need for some premium cuts of meat, but creative seasoning with organic spices and herbs can enhance the taste of virtually everything you grill. What’s more, the clean simplicity of organic seasonings perfectly complements the natural healthfulness of grilling. The organic seasoning experts at Frontier Co-op offer some tips for using seasonings to achieve greater grilling this spring and summer:

of a rub or marinade. What’s the difference between the two? It’s not just that one is dry and the other wet, because some rubs are wet, too. Generally, rubs are mixtures of dry spices that you rub on food to add flavor before cooking. They’re good for high-fat foods like meat, and often contain salt and sugar, which also promotes the formation of a crust on the food when you grill it. Usually, after applying a rub you’ll want to let the food sit an hour or two before grilling it. Marinades are typically liquid seasoned with spices to add flavor to food and sometimes tenderize it. You place the food in the liquid and allow it to sit for a set period of time – a few hours to overnight. When you’re ready to cook, remove the food from the marinade and use a brush or rubber spatula to remove excess marinade before placing the food on the grill. Marinades are great for vegetables and meat, poultry or fish that tend to be dry.

How to use color psychology to influence the mood of your home

to social media conversation about colors mentioned with areas of the home. But when asked directly, the majority of participants say more vibrant colors should be used throughout the home, such as blue, red and green. Based on this new research and Augustin’s insights on color psychology, here are some ideas on choosing colors for painting projects:

In the mood for blue

If you’re drawn in by beautiful blues, you’re in good company. Sixty-two percent of Americans select blue as one of the colors they like the most. This strong preference for blue is consistent across genders, locations and age, making a blue like Adriatic Sea SW 6790 a good choice if you’re considering more vibrant colors, or if you’re painting a room in a home that you plan to sell soon. “No matter where you go on the planet, people are most likely to say that their favorite color is blue. In our primordial past, blue was linked to good things in our lives. It is the color

of the sky on a fair weather day and also a color of a watering hole seen from a distance,” Augustin says.

Black comes back

It may be surprising that black is the second most popular color (32 percent), and is especially liked among millennials, at 41 percent. Many have fallen in love with darker tones again, and dark black like Tricorn Black SW 6258 and even charcoal, navy and deep jewel tones are all gaining in popularity, adding urban sophistication to a wide range of spaces, from living rooms to kitchens.

What green really means

JULY 2017

Generations see green hues differently. Millennials associate it with energy (33 percent compared to 24 percent of Gen Xers and baby boomers). Boomers are more likely than millennials to associate green with calmness (26 percent vs. 20 percent). When it comes to the psychology of green, the color seems to enhance creative thinking, making a green such as Derbyshire SW 6741 a good option for a study or for a stimulating playroom.

Bold colors are popular in today’s homes. Red accents add energy to this room while complimenting the bright blue of the walls.

Raving for red

According to Augustin, since red is also the color of many fine wines,

painting a wall Rave Red SW 6608 in a dining room can appropriately call wine to mind. Red also offers people a burst of strength, making it an effective color choice for spaces like laundry rooms, where “heavy lifting” is done. The top feeling most Americans associate with white is calmness (34 percent). By applying color psychology to your paint selections, you can make each room evoke the emotions you desire.” Most people talk about neutrals like black and white, according to a new color study conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Sherwin-Williams through listening
