Welcome to Kenosha, one of the best places to live and play. Nestled up against Lake Michigan, midway between Milwaukee and Chicago, the City of Kenosha is easily accessible by Interstate 94 from either city. It offers an unique mix of old and new, with modern amenities like the airport and electric streetcars running the rails throughout the downtown area.

Kenosha is the fourth-largest city in Wisconsin, with a population of about 100,000, and the fourth-largest city on Lake Michigan, coming after Chicago, Milwaukee and Green Bay. The city had been a shipping port since the early 1800s when it was known as Southport. The Kenosha Harbor now stands in monument to that history with historical lighthouses and museums open

A hub of culture and art, the Kenosha Public Museum System includes the main Kenosha Public Museum, the Dinosaur Discovery Museum in association with Carthage College and the Smithsonian, and the Kenosha Civil War Museum. The city also has the Kenosha History Center and Maritime Museum on Simmons Island, which has two lighthouses.

The outdoor Kenosha HarborMarket is open mid-May through mid-October on Second Avenue between 54th and 56th Streets. It features more than 100 stalls with vendors selling fresh produce, cheese and other local food products and handmade items. During the colder months, the HarborMarket moves indoors to the lobby of the Rhode Center of the Arts. It is not open in January and February.

There’s always something to do in Kenosha. Come and visit, we’ll leave the light on.

It’s time to head out on the water Kenosha marinas offer all the amenities

On a warm and sunny day the sound and sight of boats skimming across the water can be noted throughout the many lakes and rivers found in the area.

For water activities reign from early spring until late fall, until the ice and cold of winter end the boating season.

For each of us our relationship with the lakes is different. The desire to be in the lake swimming is the driving force for some, especially children. For others there is just a need to sit by the water and take in its calming and relaxing view. Maybe playing in the sand with young children and building sand castles with an occasional dip into the water to cool off and rinse some sand away is your way to enjoy the lake.

Then there are the boaters. They do not want to be in the lake or by the lake but wish to be on the lake with the cool breezes blowing in their face as they speed across the water. But not all boaters expect the same thrill from the water. While there are those who love the thrill of speed, there are others who enjoy the leisurely ride along the water taking in the beauty of the lake and shore with the companionship of friends and family.

Among the health conscious, boating is not a motor driven sport. From the early days when the sailboat was the most prevalent on the waters, men and women have used their strength and skill coupled with the power of the wind to propel their way across the lake. Today canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are popular ways of enjoying time on the lake and getting in a workout.

For the boaters, the marinas are a home away from home and the boat owner’s best friends. It is here that they rent slips to hold their boats when not out on the water. The marinas also provide storage in the winter.

As with all motor driven vehicles, they do at times break down and it is the marina’s mechanical technicians that make the boat run again. The gasoline needed to run the boat may also be obtained on the piers.

The boat rental marinas are cheerful places.

Customers wait excitedly for the arrival of their boat anticipating the fun of an hour or several hours on the water.

Employees, mostly of college age, carefully prepare each boat for its delivery to the customer. They diligently explain the workings of the boat and give safety instructions. Finally they pilot the boats out to the

more open areas of the lake and are picked up by a co-worker on a wave runner for the return to the pier.

Watching the activity on the lake there is a variety of boats and other watercraft to entice one out on the water. From those propelled by muscle power to those using motors to propel their way across the lake, there are many choices. Here are a few of the popular rental choices in the area:

Kayak the lake Kayaking, is a favorite summer activity that appeals to young children, teenagers and their parents. A kayak is a self-propelled boat similar to a canoe. The difference from the canoe is in the shape of the boat and the paddler sits into the boat with legs extended forward. Instead of the type of oar used in a canoe, a two bladed paddle is used.

Newer forms of kayaks include models where one sits on top instead of into the kayak. Inflatable kayaks are also becoming popular and easily transported as they can be deflated for the ride home. Kayaking is easily learned and an enjoyable way to spend time on the water.

Try paddle boarding Stand Up Paddle boarding, known as SUP, is a relatively new way to enjoy the water. Popular with the millennials, stand up paddle boarding requires a paddleboard and a long handled oar. Stand up Paddle Boarding is exactly what it sounds like.

Core strength is needed to maintain balance, perhaps that is why it is more popular with those from teen years through their 30s who tend to be in good physical shape.

Run the waves

Moving on to powered boats a popular choice is the wave runner. I envision the wave runner as the motorcycle of boating.

It is small, easily maneuverable, and can move quickly through the water. The wave runner holds one or two persons. It is recommended by some of the marinas as an ideal craft for first time riders or for those who enjoy a less strenuous riding experience. Wave runners can reach speeds

of 40 mph or more depending on the engine so the ride can be thrilling.

Float on a pontoon Interested is spending a leisurely day on the lake? Relaxing on a pontoon boat with a group of friends while you circle the lake is a favorite way to see the lake and the shore. Bring a picnic lunch aboard and spend the day. Tubing can be done off the back of the pontoon. Pontoons are favorites for families, and small groups. Most pontoons can hold 10 to 12 persons.

Have the need for speed?

Speedboats zipping across the water, front end high in the air. Have you wished you were in that boat with the wind blowing across your face as you skim across the water? Capable of pulling a tube or water skis, a speedboat will provide an exciting day for both the driver and the skier or tuber.

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the beautiful sight of yachts, speedboats, sailboat and fishing boats can be seen on the water. Kenosha offers a variety of well-run marinas with amenities to make a stay enjoyable. They include:

Southport Harbor is located in the renovated Harbor Park area. Like everything in the area it is clean and attractive. The harbor is within walking distance of Kenosha’s museums.

A little more difficult to locate, the Weiss Marina is actually located behind 4829 5th Avenue. In addition to its docks and boat slips, Weiss’ Marina offers a large picnic area with grills for patrons’ use. Clean restrooms and showers on shore. Electric power and water supply are available. Secure parking is close to the boat. Enjoy nearby shopping, restaurants, and museums.

The Dinosaur Museum is housed in this renovated Beaux Arts Building at 5608 10th Avenue in the Historic District of Kenosha. Opened in 2006, it is the home of dinosaurs large and small.

Kenosha has much to offer history buffs

Dinosaur Discovery Museum Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Allosaurus, Triceratops the names roll off the tongues of children as they explain their favorite dinosaur. Children, even five and six year olds, have no trouble naming dinosaurs despite their difficult names and they are well aware of the many details associated with these prehistoric animals.

With children so interested in dinosaurs, it is not surprising that the majority of visitors to the Dinosaur Discovery Museum, at 5608 10th Avenue in the Civic Historic District are families with children. The museum, which opened in a renovated Beaux Arts Historic Landmark in 2006 has quickly become the place to learn all things dinosaur.

In the main gallery of the museum, a large display of dinosaur skeletons takes the visitor through the history of dinosaurs, answering such questions as to their appearance, diet, and how they became extinct. While dinosaurs are usually considered to be very large creatures, as one makes their way around the display, it is apparent that dinosaurs came in many sizes and shapes.

The Dinosaur Discovery Museum is the only known museum which focuses on the evolution of meat eating dinosaurs known as therapods to modern day birds. The many skeletons on display come from throughout the world and are casts of the original bones.

On some of the specimens there are light colored bones and dark bones. The light bones are casts of the actual bones that have been unearthed.

“Usually it is only the large bones which are found and many of even the large bones are found in pieces. They have to be removed carefully and pieced together back in the lab,” Mike Kehoe, an interpreter of the exhibit, said.

He went on to explain that in the lab on the lower level many such projects are

Visit the lower level of the museum where The Carthage Institute of Paleontology is engaged in current ongoing research of the study of dinosaurs. Also located on the lower level is a special hands on learning center for children where they can enjoy coloring dinosaur pictures, work on dinosaur rubbings, or enjoy the many dinosaur books available. Parents are welcome to share the books with their children.

Perhaps their children will teach them about dinosaurs.

What child does not love to play in the dirt? On Saturdays and Sundays a hands-on learning experience that is sure to be fun is the Dino Dig. In this simulated excavation site, children over the age of 3 years dig for dinosaurs wearing safety glasses and using paleontologist tools that are safe for children. Imagine the joy of finding your own “dinosaur bone.”

A visit to the Dinosaur Discovery Museum can be a short visit or an all day affair for those truly interested in Dinosaurs. There are many placards with information about the dinosaurs on the walls. The exhibit interpreters are glad to answer questions and explain details of the exhibit. Watch the movie of the Hell Creek Expedition for a better understanding of the work involved in recovering these bones.

Located several blocks away from the Dinosaur Museum, the Kenosha Public Museum should be the next stop on a museum visit day. A trip to a museum is always interesting and even more so when the displays depict local history. This museum, which focuses on natural science, fine art, and decorative art will continue a visit to the giant beasts of the past with the Wooly Mammoth exhibit and then will

lead the visitor into fine art displays and other exhibits which change seasonally.

Standing 10 to 12 feet tall at its shoulders and weighing 6 to 8 tons, this gigantic prehistoric animal is best described by its name – Mammoth. Yes the wooly mammoth this giant of an animal at one time roamed freely throughout this area. Today however we are left with just its skeleton on display at the Kenosha Public Museum, a mammoth that was unearthed here in the area. The Schaefer and Hebior mammoth exhibit is the centerpiece of the first floor exhibit.

While viewing the mammoth is the highlight of the visit to the exhibition, it is the journey through time that will bring one there. Before you arrive at the mammoth, you begin by entering a softly lit tunnel that walks you through time back thousands of years when this area of Wisconsin was a glacier.

As you move through time and through the tunnel, you will reach the display of the first people to arrive in the area following the end of the last glacial period. That time was thought to be around 14,500 years ago. Life size statues of these early peoples depicting scenes of their lives in these early days begin to appear. The walk through the displays of the village covers all four seasons of the year in a North American village While this exhibit takes up much of the first floor, it is not all that there is to see and do at the museum. Located on the first floor is the Field Station where children receive hands on experience in art. Call for the schedule of classes.

The property was originally the home of Sen. Charles Durkee and became the girls’ school when he was appointed territorial governor of Utah.

Nestled between the Lake Michigan shore and Third Avenue in Kenosha, the Kemper Center stands as the centerpiece of Kenosha County’s seventh County Park.

This elegant structure has grown over the years from a single home into the large complex seen today.

The history of this property goes back to the mid 1800s when it was purchased by businessman Charles Durkee. Durkee owned quite a bit of property in the town of Southport, later known as Kenosha, much of it along the lakefront. Durkee was also involved in politics of the area and aided in the development of Kenosha. He served as a United States senator for the new State of Wisconsin.

In 1861, Sen. Durkee and his second wife, Caroline, began construction on an elegant home befitting people of their station in life. The home, an elegant showplace, was built on Third Avenue along the lakeshore.

Constructed of cream-colored bricks in the Italianate Victorian Style, it was complete with a widow’s walk on the top. The three-story home had a ballroom on the third floor.

The Durkee family lived in the home until 1865 when Durkee was appointed governor of the new territory of Utah

by President Andrew Johnson.

Leaving his beloved Kenosha, Durkee sold his home to the Episcopal Church for use as a girl’s boarding school. The sale included a provision that there would be an annuity for his wife Catherine for the rest of her life.

In 1865, the house became an Episcopal boarding school for young women, which would emphasize education and strong Christian values. The name of the

school was changed in 1871 to honor Bishop Jackson Kemper, the first missionary bishop of the American Episcopal Church for the Northwest Territory. From that time on the girl’s school officially became known as Kemper Hall.

The school was unique in that it didn’t just focus on the basic studies of reading, writing, and arithmetic as most schools of the time did, but emphasized prayer, athletic competition and selfdiscipline. The school was very religiously oriented and focused on the importance of doing good.

They were developing not just the future housewives of the time but true community leaders.

Classes were very demanding for the students. The development of critical thinking skills was emphasized.

The school motto “Fight the Good Fight” was encouraged.

They were taught to use physical, spiritual, and intellectual force to right wrongs that they encountered.

In 1878 the Episcopal Sisters of St. Mary were chosen to administer education to the students of Kemper School for Girls. At the same time, Kemper Hall became the Motherhouse for the Episcopal Sisters of St. Mary, for the Western Province, which extended to the Pacific Ocean.

Over the years the school expanded with additional space being added to the building.

A chapel, dormitories and class space allowed additional students to be educated here and additional space for the sisters.

Today the Kemper Center features an auditorium, conference center and art center.

It hosts many community events.

Kenosha execution played role in repeal of death penalty

The State of Wisconsin became the first state in the union to permanently abolish the death penalty for all crimes in 1853. The state’s first and only execution two years earlier focused the attention of Wisconsin on Kenosha.

John McCaffary, of Kenosha, had the dubious distinction of being the only person executed by the state.

McCaffary was a farmer of Irish descent, who immigrated to Wisconsin and made his home in the newly incorporated Town of Kenosha. It was here that he lived at 5732 13th Court with his wife Brigid, until 1850.

The marriage was not considered a happy one as neighbors often heard the couple arguing and breaking household items such as dishes and furniture, according to historic accounts. On the night of July 23, 1850, the neighbors heard screaming at the McCaffary residence.

The sound was so loud that they could not ignore it and went searching for its source.

Although the noise had abated by the time they reached the McCaffary residence, they found Brigid McCaffary’s body in a cistern on the grounds of the house. She had been drowned – presumably by her husband, who was immediately arrested and subsequently charged with the firstdegree murder of his wife.

The trial of John McCaffary began in May 1851 and lasted about 10 days.

During the trial, McCaffary denied that he had murdered Brigid. The jury found McCaffary guilty of willful murder and was sentenced by the judge to the first death sentence granted by the newly formed State of Wisconsin. The judge chose the form of death to be death by hanging and the death warrant was signed by Gov. Nelson Dewey.

As the day of the execution neared, residents from around the area began to travel to Kenosha prepared to watch

the hanging. Various accounts of the time estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 people gathered for the execution, which was held in front of the Kenosha Courthouse and jail.

The hanging did not go as planned and, as a result, may have hastened efforts to abolish the death penalty. McCaffary did not succumb to death in five minutes as expected, but reportedly suffered for about 20 minutes until he was officially declared dead by a local doctor. He was laid to rest in Green Ridge Cemetery in Kenosha.

According to Peter Shaw Johnson, President and Manager of the Kenosha Cemetery Association, operators of Green Ridge Cemetery, McCaffary was buried in a potter’s field plot for the indigent in Green Ridge Cemetery.

The brutality execution was a sight that many in attendance would never forget and motivated reformers to press forward with the drive to eliminate the death penalty. C. Latham Sholes, editor of the Kenosha News, was among those who fought for the abolition of the death penalty.

The death penalty was eliminated on July 10, 1853, by the state Legislature.

Some would argue that Rhode Island was the first state to eliminate the death penalty when its legislature passed a law prohibiting capital punishment in 1852.

However this was a temporary abolishment of the death penalty and they reinstated it in 1872 but it could only be applied if a person committed a capital offense while serving a life sentence. No one was executed under this newer law.

The State of Michigan had abolished the death penalty for all crimes except treason in 1847.

For the most part, citizens of Wisconsin were content with the death penalty prohibition until the 1990s when there was

a push to reinstate it after the capture of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and the full extent of his crimes became known.

At that time outraged citizens and some politicians began calling for the return of capital punishment. With the death of Dahmer in 1994 while incarcerated and decreased murder rates in the state, the pressure to reinstate the death penalty was lessened. Twentytwo bills were introduced to the state Legislature to reinstate capital punishment between 1991 and 1996, none of them made it through legislative committees.

The debate over whether capital punishment should be allowed continues throughout the nation with 31 states still allowing capital punishment while 19 states and the District of Columbia do not.

Today the McCaffary residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its association with a major event in city and state history. It is not there because a murder was committed on the site but because that murder was associated with the abolition of capital punishment in the state.

Brighton Dale Park and Golf Course Brighton Dale Park and Golf Course is just north of the intersection of Highways 75 and 142, (14 miles from the City of Kenosha), adjacent to the Bong State Recreation Area.

Bristol Woods Park Bristol Wood Park is south of Highway C on Highway MB. The 200-acre park is the most natural of all the Kenosha County Parks and boasts 4.28 miles of hiking trails as well as a playground, grills and shelter building.

Restrooms are located in Area 1 and Pringle Nature Center.

Fox River Park

KD Park KD Park is along Highway KD south of Highway 50 in Randall and Wheatland, the KD Park, a former gravel quarry, encompasses 234 acres of land and a 39-acre lake.

For safety purposes, specific lake use restrictions and guidelines are being developed by the county and will be posted at the park. This park is being developed with an emphasis on sustainable living education and recreation.

Hunting permits to hunt at KD West are available from the Park Division.

Park includes a dog park, hiking trails, picnic tables, fishing, cross country skiing, and show shoeing.

Old Settlers Park

Silver Lake Park

The smallest county park at 17 acres, Old Settlers Park is always a hit with the summer beach crowd. The park provides shaded picnic and lawn areas overlooking Paddock Lake, sandy beaches, shelter building, dog park, bathhouse and restroom facilities, grills, playground equipment and ample parking.

Old Settlers Park, on Highway 50, seven miles west of Interstate 94, is also home to Spencer Field, a little league ball diamond.

The 260-acre Silver Lake Park features one of the best sandy beaches in southeastern Wisconsin.

Swimming areas, picnic areas, bathhouse, concession stand, picnic shelters, lakeside playground equipment, soccer fields, grills, windsurfing area, sledding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, fishing and convenient parking all combine to create a popular getaway on summer days.

Nature trails traverse the rolling landscape and reward hikers with a sweeping overview of Silver Lake and the surrounding countryside.

The park is on Highway F, one-mile south from Highway 50.

Restrooms are located in Areas 1, 4 and 6.

Petrifying Springs Park Petrifying Springs Park, on Highway A, just east of Highway 31, is the flagship of the Kenosha County Parks System. Known to locals as “Pets,” the park is the oldest in the system and offers a wide range of enjoyment for people of all ages throughout the year.

The rolling landscape adds beauty as well as challenge to its 18-hole golf course. Picnic areas feature five picnic shelters, restrooms and playground areas, softball diamonds, nature trails, sand volleyball courts.

Home to one of the state’s natural hardwood forests, the fall color in both the park and on the golf course is breathtaking.

There are also two outdoor chess tables at Petrifying Springs Park: one by Parking Area 1 by the well, and another at Parking Area 4 by the river. These are free to the general public, but players need to bring their own pieces.

Restrooms are located near Areas 2, 4 and 5.

Kemper Center – Anderson Arts Center The Kemper Center and Anderson Arts Center is a cultural and recreational facility along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The 15 acres offer picturesque old buildings (circa 1800), floral landscaping, along with a beautiful scenic setting overlooking Lake Michigan.

Frequently the site of lawn concerts, art exhibits, retreats and weddings, the Center also offers picnic tables and a fishing pier with special accommodations to the handicapped.

Fox River Park is off Highway F, just east of Highway W. The 150-acre park is home to wooded areas, picnic areas, and playground equipment, tennis courts and ball diamonds.

The quiet waters of the Fox River meander along the eastern boundary of the park and are accessible to boaters and canoers (launching area provided along Highway F at the bridge).

A special attraction during the winter is a bermed sled slide, which provides a long and exhilarating run (weather permitting). Artificial lighting allows night use of this popular sledding facility. Also, home to a no fee, 9-hole disc golf course. Fox River Park is home to Ray Berres Field ball diamond.
