Find your beach With an abundance of lakes – and, accordingly, beaches – the Geneva Lakes area boasts a wealth of sun, sand and cooling breezes on summer days. Whether it’s the large popular beaches on Geneva Lake – Riviera or Fontana – or the more secluded stretches of sand found on Twin Lakes in Kenosha County or Browns Lake in Burlington, the choices are many. Because of changing conditions due to coronavirus, readers are advised to verify a particular beach is open before planning an outing. Here’s your guide to some of the area’s beaches:
Lake Geneva Located in downtown Lake Geneva at 211 Wrigley Drive, (262) 248-3673, Rivera Beach is a 600-foot-long sandy stretch that attracts both the local residents and tourists from the Chicago and northern Illinois area. A lifeguard is on duty from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the summer season. While it is one of the nicest beaches around, it is also the busiest. Tickets costing $8 for adults and $4 for children are purchased from a machine at the entrance to the park.
Big Foot Beach Big Foot Beach State Park, 1452 Wells St., Lake Geneva, is a 271-acre park on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva. There are many park activities including trails, a playground, volleyball courts, and a 40-acre picnic area. There is a small swimming beach on the lakeshore however no lifeguards are present.
Williams Bay Williams Bay Beach is on Geneva Avenue in Williams Bay, (262) 245-2720. With a clean, sandy beach, Williams Bay attracts families. Entry fee is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Lifeguards are on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It also offers a bathhouse with showers.
Fontana Fontana Beach – 505 Lake St., Fontana, (262) 275-6136 – is another large beach that attracts many visitors especially families.

Food and beverages are allowed but no grills, glass, or alcohol. Guards are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Daily rates are $10 for those 12 and older and $5 for ages 6-11. Changing rooms are available.
Delavan
In the Town of Delavan, Community Park, 1220 South Shore Drive, (262) 740-2335, has a large playground, including a volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and picnic area but the swimming beach is small. The swimming area is delineated to keep swimmers from going out of the area because of underwater weeds. Daily rates for visitors are available.
Twin Lakes Lance Park Beach along Main Street on Lake Mary in the Village of Twin Lakes is perhaps the most popular. The beach is small, but it features a collar of green grass behind it. No lifeguards are on duty so swimming is at your own risk. There is plenty of parking and no admission fee.
Burlington Fischer Park on Browns Lake in Burlington, 30326 Durand Avenue, (262) 763-8446, features a wide, sandy beach. The park is well maintained. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day during the swimming season. Picnic tables encourage visitors to spend the day and enjoy a picnic lunch. There is a $2 per person fee during the swimming season.

East Troy Brewery eases into the new normal with everchanging offerings by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
When Ann and Ted Zess discovered that the former Merit Bank building on the square in East Troy was available for purchase, they knew it would be the perfect place to open a new business. “Ann and Ted are craft beer enthusiasts and felt that this historical building located right on the square in downtown East Troy

would make the perfect place to launch their new brewery,” said John Turner, current manager of East Troy Brewery. Ted and Ann put together a private investment group and – aided by a loan from the Village of East Troy of $250,000 and a grant of $250,000 from the Community Development Investment Fund – purchased the former bank building and began the monumental task of turning a circa 1892 building into a modern brewery and restaurant. When dealing with a building that is more than 100 years old, nothing ever goes as expected. The renovation, which had a cost of $2.5 million, ran into a number of construction problems and delays – some caused by structural issues as is often found in such old buildings. The project was not an easy task as they
worked to maintain the spirit of the ancient building and still bringing it up to date to function as a brewery. They began to remodel in 2017 with a planned opening of the brewpub in July 2018, a date that was not realized due to the many delays. Instead they had a soft opening after Christmas of 2018 with a grand opening on January 10, 2019.
All about the beer The brewery opened by producing a small number of specialty beers created on site. Using traditional brewing measures, with a twist for unique flavors, the brewery adds additional beers regularly. They have 13 beers on tap, which change as new brews are created.

To produce their specialty beers, they purchase the Wisconsin-grown malts and hops. With these local ingredients they add village water, giving a uniquely local taste to each beer created. Their brewers are also known for their “tinkering” with their traditional beer recipes adding complex flavors and aromas and have been known for throwing in out-of-the-ordinary fruits and spices to add a unique taste. No two of their beer creations ever taste the same. Along with the variety of beers being created, the brewery also developed a food menu to compliment these special brews. The food is prepared by Chef Ashley Turner. She is originally from Texas and enjoys having fun with food. Her style is described as “Texas eclectic.” She combines items to give the food a different fresh taste in the Southwestern style while often including smoked items. She prepares her dishes using fresh, locally grown ingredients whenever they are available. The menu, which mainly consists of pub food with a twist, changes regularly as Chef Ashley creates new items to offer to the customers. Among the items on the menu are the pizzas. Along with traditional pizza there is the Carnivore loaded with three kinds of meat – chorizo, pepperoni and bacon. Or try the Little Wing with smoked duck, peanut sauce, mozzarella, shredded greens and sweet soy sauce. Each one of the many other different style pizzas has a fancy name and unique ingredients, not found elsewhere.
Perfect pairings They offer a variety of sandwiches and tacos from the pear and bacon Panini to the Wagyu burger or the buffalo burger. Each dish is paired with one of the brewery’s beers that brings out the best of both the food and the beer. Customers, of course, are allowed to choose any beer they want with their meal. The menu is a seasonally evolving menu that allows for the use of in-season foods and helps

to provide the choices of comfort foods best enjoyed at particular points in the year. Whether the choice is an appetizer to nibble on with your beverage or a full meal there are many options. And if beer is not your choice of adult beverage, they also offer a variety of fine wines and cocktails. When the inside of the brewery was up and running, Ann and Ted Zess continued to work on the outside, adding landscaping and an outdoor beer garden. They also applied for a permit from the village to have sidewalk dining, to make viewing events on the square enjoyable. Last year, Ann Zess was quoted as saying, “People seem

to really like what we have here and that’s the reason we did this. We are part of the community and we wanted to help promote East Troy and find a way to introduce people to the area. We also get to show people the brewing process, share some good food, and have a lot of fun.”
THE CHALLENGES OF 2020 Over the summer of 2019 the business grew as local residents and visitors to East Troy enjoyed stopping by for a beer or coming in to enjoy a meal with friends or family. At times they offered live music, which is something they were hoping to continue this year, but that is on hold, according to Turner. While they were continuing with plans to add to the services offered here, in early 2020 the pandemic arrived causing a disruption in their services. For several months downtown areas of most cities and towns remained deserted as restaurants and bars stood empty, closed to comply with the stay-at-home orders hoping to quell the coronavirus pandemic. With the easing of restrictions and the reopening of businesses, the hospitality business is coming back to life. But going from closed to a vibrant open restaurant required some adjustments. East Troy Brewery saw a big change in the way they went about serving their customers during the pandemic. For many places, the shutdowns forced owners to let some or all of their staffs go. “Not so here,” said Turner. “We were able to retain almost all of our staff except for a few part-timers, who voluntarily gave up their few hours each week. “To keep the business open, we began by offering carryout services of favorite items on our menu. Beer produced in our brewery, too, could be ordered for take out in 32-ounce cans. These sales have helped
us to keep our business intact until we could open again,” Turner added. Carryout orders can be made by calling 262-642-2670. Their new menu can be found on line at etbrew.com. Once you have decided on your food and have placed your order, you’ll be able to pay for it with a credit or debit card. ET Brewery will confirm a pick up time. Then you have a choice. Come into the brewery and pick up your order or drive to the Brewery and park in the lot closest to the back door of the pub. Call and let them know that you have arrived, give them a description of your car and where it is waiting, and they will bring out your order.
Patio, dining room are open “When we opened the outdoor patio we had to make many changes to comply with safety precautions. Our tables had to be moved so that they were no closer than 6 feet,” said Turner. “Each of our tables could not hold more than 6 customers at a time. plates, utensils, and drinking vessels were also put into use.” Recently they have been able to reopen the indoor dining room, which also required some rearranging tables to create required distancing. “We are now seeing an increase in diners, something we are very glad to see. We are grateful to our customers for supporting us during this difficult time and returning to the East Troy Brewery to enjoy time with friends enjoying a meal or a drink on the Square.” When asked what he thought the future would bring, Turner replied, “No one knows what will happen in the next few months. We can only hope for the best.” As the East Troy Brewery settles into today’s “normal,” they look forward to serving customers as they continue to develop new beers and new menu items. Duesterbeck’s adds large outdoor patio to the mix
A local microbrewery that opened last fall is growing leaps and bounds in spite of being limited to carryout during the recent stay-at-home order. That temporary change wasn’t without its challenges but in true entrepreneurial spirit, the owners went with the flow. “We never really shut down but went to carryout and constantly readjusted how we did things,” Laura (Duesterbeck) Johnson said last week while taking a short break on the new patio at Duesterbeck’s Brewing Company. The brewing company was an idea born in a conversation among members of the Duesterbeck family’s sixth generation – sisters Lindsey and twins

Laura and Leslie. “The barns had been starting to go down hill for a while and we were wondering what to do. We also wondered how we were going to get our kids to want to take over the farm some day,” Laura said. Her husband, Ben Johnson, a dentist in Delavan, has been brewing beer since he was 19 years old. “I started on a stovetop in my apartment,” Ben said in an earlier interview, and opening a commercial brewery was a dream of his. The idea combined the best of both worlds. One of the ways the family was successful during the coronavirus shutdown was by regularly announcing new releases. “That was huge and really helped bring people in, constantly offering new releases. Normally, we plan a new release once a month but during that time we did one about every two weeks,” Laura said. Those recent new releases were Irish Red ale, Peach Milk Parlor IPA, Blackberry Sour, and Chester White Orange Mango and Chester White Cherry hard seltzer. Duesterbeck’s offers a variety of containers to carry out beer. They faced an unexpected challenge when those weren’t easy to buy during the coronavirus shutdown. “The crowlers (32 oz. cans) seemed to be the most popular but the growlers (64 oz. bottles) also were. There was a shortage on both because all of the microbreweries
were buying them as everyone’s carryout business increased,” Laura said.
Neighborly connections
Next up for DBC in the new release department are Strawberry Milk Shake and Strawberry Sour. They’ve teamed up with a local producer, the Jacobson family of The Apple Barn, for the strawberries needed for those drinks. “Their strawberries are amazing, they’re our neighbors and we think it’s important to support local,” Laura said. Duesterbeck’s has partnered with Friends on the Square, which has its food truck business, Friends on the Go, parked at the brewery on the weekend. Friends’ sells meat from another local business, Sorg’s Quality Meats, including pulled pork sandwich, pulled pork nachos, hamburgers, and hot dogs. DBC sells some simpler food options including soft pretzels with dip in two sizes, fresh cheese curds, fresh cheese, summer sausage and beef sticks, pretzels, chips, tortilla chips and salsa. Adding yet another neighbor into the mix, Duesterbeck’s is now selling Sperino’s pizza. “Cory (Aune) made a frozen pizza just for us and it tastes just like a Sperino’s pizza,” Laura said. For now, she said, Duesterbeck’s is going to see how things go with Friends but there’s the possibility of expanding food trucks at DBC in the future or for special
events. A special group is set to make a stop at DBC on Saturday, July 4, Sweet Abilities. It’s a mobile ice cream business that provides equal working opportunities to people with a variety of different abilities.
New outdoor space
In an effort to protect the health of staff as well as their customers, Duesterbeck’s is currently limiting the number of people allowed in the Tap Room to 50. But because the brewing company is on a farm, there’s plenty of open space to work with. “The new patio is great. We hope it will help people feel more comfortable stopping by and is something we planned to all along,” Laura said. A stage next to the patio will feature live music, which kicked off last weekend. More concerts are being added. Laura’s mom, Cathy Duesterbeck, handles the bookings. Among the shows scheduled is a performance by Kenny and the Knight Owls on Saturday, July 18. all the shows begin at 6:30 p.m. The staff is lining up other performances for the rest of the summer. According to Laura, Duesterbeck’s is moving along as planned. They’ll start a canning line soon, which will feature 12 oz. cans of beer but only one kind at a time – beginning with Crop Duester – because they have to purchase an entire pallet of the cans. “We’re on the game plan for what we wanted to do this summer with the outdoor patio and stage. We moved up taking down the pig barn because the guy doing the patio was also going to do that so it made sense to move it up,” she said. The “pig barn,” which is what Laura and her sisters knew it as growing up, was in bad shape. It will be rebuilt next year and add yet another dimension to Duesterbeck’s. “It’ll be a place that can be rented out as we’re constantly getting calls from people wanting to rent the Tap Room,” she said. The current drink menu at DBC includes: Crop Duester cream ale, Bees Be Crazy hefeweizen, The Pig Farmer pale ale-American, Irish Red ale, Bentist Candy IPA, Muddy Duroc brown ale, Oatmeal Stout, Bourbon
AgRONomy, Pleasant View Double IPA, Blackberry Sour, Peach Milk Parlor IPA, Roosterbeck amber lager, and Chester White Orange Mango and Chester White Cherry hard seltzers. A gluten free beer, RedBridge, is also available. Numerous sizes are offered – 16 oz. glass, 32 oz. crowler or 64 oz. growler. Guests wanting to try several flavors can opt for a 5 oz. taster, or beer flights of four or six beers. Those looking for non-alcoholic drinks also have several options: Sprecher’s soda – root beer, cream soda, grape, orange, cherry cola, cherry cranberry, bottled water and kombucha, which is on tap, in lemon grass, raspberry, peach blush or juniper rose flavors. There is also a variety of merchandise available for purchase including t-shirts, hoodies, koozies and hats in different colors and styles. Pearce’s Farm Stand ready for summer opening by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
For three generations, the Pearce family has been selling homegrown produce to the community. For half a century, Pearce’s Farm Stand has been the place to get farm fresh products in and around the Walworth area. The family-owned and operated farm started with a small roadside produce stand which has grown to a destination each summer/fall for family fun, locally grown produce and freshly baked treats.
This year owners, Bob and Mary Ann Pearce, are faced with several challenges related to COVID-19. The Pearces announced in mid June that they planned to open the Farm Stand on July 1. “We’re playing it by ear, this is nothing like we’ve seen in our lifetimes,” Mary Ann said of the current conditions. “I remember the war and having stamps to buy sugar, but nothing like this.” When the Pearces were in the process of planting their crops in mid-April they didn’t alter what or how much they were planting. “We’re trying to make the best of things and we’re planning on planting the same,” Mary Ann said at the time. “We don’t usually open until we have sweet corn, which is usually around the 20th of July, so we’re hoping things are more open by then.”
She added that there has been some discussion, prompted by one of their employees, to have a “soft open” earlier to offer their bread and butter, along with salsa, beer dip and other canned and baked goods. “We’re considering it,” Mary Ann said. “When we normally open up we don’t have everything anyways because it’s not done growing. It’s nothing compared to what we have in August.” Mary Ann said customers might see some new rules when they head out to the farm stand later in the year, but right now, they didn’t know for sure what those might be because guidance for places like farm stands has been changing rapidly. “Right now, it’s pretty much if you touch something, you buy it,” Mary Ann said. “We can’t wrap each item, so depending on what happens over the next couple of months,

things might look different around here this year.”

Pearce’s is known for its sweet corn and pumpkins, but the farm has a lot more to offer. When open, the market is stocked with fruits, veggies, jams, jellies and locally harvested honey. Sweet corn is picked every morning and donuts and kettle corn made every weekend onsite. All of Pearce’s vegetables are handpicked, washed and retailed by family members and a few close staff members, according to the farm’s website. The farm stand is also known for its fresh bakery and donuts. Cinnamon-sugar donuts are available every weekend and when fall arrives, the stand’s popular apple cider donuts make an appearance. Weekends are special at Pearce’s Farm Stand. Part of the picnic area has a stage where local musical talent is showcased on designated dates. Other past activities include helicopter rides and tethered hot air balloon rides. During past Octobers, the Pearces have offered the Estate of Terror – a haunted mansion and a haunted hayride for those who like a little adrenaline in their systems. The farm stand will update its website and Facebook page closer to fall with what activities they will be offering for 2020. Belfry Theatre opens season with new safety policies in place espite continued uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the folks at The Belfry Music Theatre decided to move forward with the season. But before doing so, they asked their patrons opinions and based the ultimate decision on those responses. “Our decisions regarding opening weekend were based upon the majority of the 866 patrons who responded to survey.
We expended significant time and effort to listen to the desires of the patrons who have attended and supported the theatre,” Belfry staff stated on a Facebook post. As a result of the survey, the Belfry has implemented numerous safety procedures, which are subject to modification as the season progresses. Those procedures include: scanning attendees’ temperature prior to entry to the theatre building; no shaking hands;

Some patrons commenting on Facebook posts about the procedures said they would not attend performances if required to wear a mask.
“We did have multiple responses that if required to wear a face mask those parties would not attend. In our email we acknowledged that not all parties will agree with this requirement and some may choose not to attend. We completely respect your right to make that choice,” Belfry staff responded, adding that the mask policy will be reviewed each week as the season progresses. “We certainly look forward to being able to
present live entertainment with no restrictions as in the past and seeing you again when you feel the time is right to reengage with The Belfry Music Theatre,” staff said. The theatre has added a live-streaming option to allow patrons who do not feel comfortable attending in person to experience the concerts at home. This year’s lineup will be the largest number in a season to date and that isn’t including the Christmas season, which had not been released as of press time. In addition to bringing back crowd favorites, including this year’s opening act, American English (a Beatles Tribute), the Belfry is also presenting 20 new acts never seen on their stage before. With nearly 40 different events to choose from in a season that runs through November, there is plenty of opportunity to take in a live or live-streamed performance.

After months of self isolation, as we tried to protect ourselves and our families from the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are looking to enjoy some outdoor summer activities. Most are ready to get out and enjoy the beauty of summer as restrictions are being loosened. Since foreign travel is mostly banned and concerns about travel within the United States are causing more residents to cancel trips, many people are considering a vacation closer home. When looking for a romantic getaway weekend or a full week or more of family fun, an attractive option for many in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois is a visit to Lake Lawn Resort on the shores of

With more than two miles of shoreline, this resort, which first opened over 140 years ago, has been welcoming visitors to enjoy a variety of activities both indoors and out. With plenty of amenities available, there is sure to be enough activity for everyone in your group. And if quiet and relaxing time is what is sought, that too will be found. “A visit to Lake Lawn will be a new experience,” General Manager Dave Sekeres said. “We have taken the time when we were in closure for mitigation for COVID to develop procedures not only for now but for use in the future. We have worked on determining how to make the facility safe for both employees and guests. We focus on what guests can expect from us and what we expect from guests to keep the facility safe for all of us.”

Safety procedures will be evident from the time you check in. Hand sanitizer stations are visible when first entering the building. Markings are placed at 6-foot intervals to remind visitors to remain physically distant. While one person from the group is checking in, space for the rest of the party is available away from the checkin desk. “We do not require guests to wear masks but do request that they be worn,” added Sekeres. “With these safety programs in place, we ask for patience from guests while we all adjust to the new safer ways.” The employees are checked for elevated temperature and other symptoms of illness before they are allowed to work. Masks are provided. At this time most meals are ordered to go and may be eaten in the outdoor seating area or in guests’ rooms. In June the staff was working on opening the restaurants to dining-in and they planned to have it in place in July. Lake Lawn has also used the time to renovate the banquet and meeting spaces, and the lake house. They have replaced the furniture with lighter items and have added new carpets also in lighter beach colors. Walls have been painted to reflect more lakeside colors similar to what is seen in the resort’s Calladora Spa. It’s peaceful and relaxing as a waterfront space should be.

A new store in Walworth aims to offer healthy, gourmet meal plans for dogs, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg at The Pet Gourmet – Flagship Store. In addition to meal plans, the store offers a variety of toys, pet apparel, essential oil sprays (odor eliminator, calming aid and learning aid), leashes and other walking supplies, treats, dog beds and mats, and an assortment of gifts for pet lovers. Lexie Berglund co-owns the store with Kurt Stricker, who is also the owner of The Pound Bakery in Harvard, Ill., where all of the food products and some of the other items sold at The Pet Gourmet – Flagship Store are designed and produced. The Pound Bakery has been in business since 1996 and has about 300 employees. Berglund was involved there for more than 12 years including working with online sales and marketing. The company’s pet products have been sold at farm markets and craft fairs for several years. Berglund said while working in the pet industry, she realized there was a lack of healthy options for pets and was excited to be in a position where she could use her skill set to help improve the quality of pet diets. “Growing up, my family always had a focus on health and natural remedies for ailments. Since I’ve been in the pet industry, I have been focused on creating treats

The store was a former dry cleaning shop and after remodeling, the grand opening was held Feb. 28 through March 1. The event included free photographs of dogs by Melanie Renee Photography. There were also treats for dogs and cupcakes from Bittner’s Bakery for their owners. In addition to daily drawings, guests were able to put together a sample meal to take home for their dogs. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit, which canceled the official ribbon cutting and a Business After 5 event with the Geneva Lake West Chamber of Commerce. Since the store sells pet food, it fell under the state’s list of essential businesses. For those not comfortable shopping in person, online ordering and curbside pickup is offered as well as home deliveries. The store are offering free home delivery on orders over $15 and deliver within 15 miles of the store including to Harvard, Illinois, Delavan, Walworth, Fontana, Lake Geneva, Williams Bay, and Elkhorn on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They are also helping out by selling cloth masks made by Berglund’s mom at a price of $10 each with 100 percent of the revenue going to Lakeland Animal Shelter. As of last week the store had already raised more than $600 for the shelter with the mask project. The masks – which come in ear strap, head strap and tie options in several designs – are available in the store and can be purchased via the website. different foods, treats and other products and also promotes store specials and events including classes. Upcoming free classes include Make Your Own Dog Toy Class for Kids, Pupsicle Making Class for Kids and Frozen Dog Treat Class.
