Volunteers worked through the night to conduct homeless count in county

PM&L Theatre presents Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The 39 Steps’ The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow and John Buchan, and based on the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, opens Friday, Jan. 31, and will run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Sunday, Feb. 16.

Four actors play over 100 characters in this rollicking Tonyaward winning play adapted from the Hitchcock masterpiece. Part juicy spy-novel with a dash of Monty Python, this fast-paced “Whodunit” is perfect for anyone who loves the magic of theatre, complete with an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and good old-fashioned romance.

David Gasior plays the suave hero Richard Hannay who learns from a beautiful spy about a plot of international espionage. The woman is killed in Hannay’s flat and he suddenly finds himself caught up in a race from London to Scotland in hopes of stopping military secrets from being smuggled out of the country. As he searches for the secret of “The 39 Steps” he is doggedly pursued by the police who believe he is a murderer. Three of the female roles will be played by Erin Booth while the remaining multitude of characters (spies, policemen, inn keepers, traveling salesmen, etc.) are played by just two actors credited as clown #1 (Liam Bell) and clown #2 (Charlie Sommers), with help from the Stage Crew (Heidi Zapp and Chris Heilgeist).

The artistic team for The 39 Steps is led by Director Casey Audrain (previous PM&L credits include The Diviners and Arsenic

and Old Lace) and Technical Director Mark Audrain (previous PM&L credits include The Pirates of Penzance and Almost, Maine).

The set is designed by Mark Audrain and WOW Construction, costume design by Lindsey Badtke and Jessica Augustine, Sound Design by Guy Finley, light design by Mark Audrain and Ken Albrecht, Incidental Music by Paul Bleadow, Stage Managed by Randy Margison and Assistant Stage Managed by Rose Stevens.

The 39 Steps will run Fridays and Saturdays, January 31st, February 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th, and 15th at 8 pm. Sunday matinee performances will be February 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 2:30 pm.

Lake County officials, in conjunction with the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless (LCCH), other partners and community volunteers participated in the annual Point-In-Time (PIT) Homeless Count last night. Every year, volunteers search Lake County to offer assistance and interview those affected by homelessness. The information gathered is critical to understanding where resources should be spent and helps evaluate current and future programs to aid the homeless.

This year, 88 volunteers made contact with 21 people experiencing homelessness. This number is expected to increase as volunteers conduct further interviews and pull additional data from local shelters and agencies in the coming days.

Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart and Vice-Chair Mary Ross-Cunningham were in attendance and were joined by fellow board member Linda Pedersen and Lake County Clerk Robin O’Connor.

“Lake County is working hard to ensure unsheltered people have a place to call home,” said Chair Hart. “The PIT Count is a crucial part of measuring our progress because it produces a snapshot census of the homeless population, allowing us to connect people

On Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 8 am – 3 pm, Volunteer Center McHenry County (VCMC) will present its annual Grant Writing Workshop for nonprofits.

Presented by Bob Marovich, a seasoned nonprofit grant writer, this day-long workshop is designed for both the greenest of grant writers to those already getting the green.

Participants will take an interactive dive into the overall strategic plan for writing grants; touching on everything from identifying donors, crafting needs statements, explaining your mission and goals, evaluation, connecting with key personnel and developing a budget. The workshop will also host a presentation by Emily Weber with the Lake County Community Foundation who will talk about the grant process from the granting agency’s perspective and answer questions.

Breakfast and lunch are included with the cost of registration, parking is free, and the facility is located less than 2 miles from the Crystal Lake/ Pingree Road Metra station.

The workshop will take place at VCMC’s office located at 620 Dakota Street, 2nd Building/2nd Floor in Crystal Lake.

CLC students find magical ways to reach students with special needs Can using simple magic tricks serve as a form of therapy to help students with special needs? College of Lake County thinks so. A dozen education students recently worked with the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) to explore a mentoring-through-magic program for their adult students.

They determined special needs students who perform simple tricks using common objects ranging from rubber bands to playing cards helps them develop self-confidence, plus verbal, motor and problem-solving skills, according to Matt Rasmussen, Ph.D., a CLC psychology professor who spearheaded the idea at the college.

“The experience helps CLC students learn skills in mentoring and teaching, as well as empathy and patience,” said Rasmussen.

“And all agree that magic is a fun way to learn.”

Following a trial run last spring, the program launched this fall with several sessions at the Grayslake Campus. On a recent Wednesday morning, about 20 SEDOL students gathered in a classroom. After Rasmussen greeted the group, he presented a quick refresher on how to do a simple card trick and had the students break into groups of two or three, each group mentored by a CLC student.

Stephanie, a SEDOL student, asked CLC education student Marissa Zaehringer to pick a card, look at it and remember the number and suit.

Stephanie then received the

card face-down from Zaehringer and gently shuffled it in the deck. Using the shuffling motion as a visual aid, Stephanie spontaneously told a short, fictitious tale of a teacher trying to find a student’s lost assignment in a stack of papers. She then pulled a card out of the deck and showed it back to Zaehringer. Presto! It was the card Zaehringer had picked. Both acknowledged the successful magic trick with a smile.

Another SEDOL student, Carli, said she had fun learning the magic tricks and the experience helped build her communication skills and learn the CLC campus environment. “The professors and students have been helpful, and they’ve made me feel comfortable at the college,” said Carli, a high school graduate who plans to enroll parttime at CLC in the Spring 2020 Semester.

CLC’s use of magic as a therapeutic tool began at the suggestion of Kevin Spencer, an award-winning magician, educator and consultant who last December performed a magic show for people of all abilities at CLC’s Grayslake Campus. Today, the concepts of “magic therapy” are being used in more than 2,000 hospitals, rehabilitation facilities and schools in over 30 countries, according to Spencer.

Additionally, the magician’s approach, known as the Healing of Magic, has been featured in several academic journals, including the “Journal of the American Medical Association.”

“Kevin (Spencer) connected me with SEDOL because they were interested in using magic to have the students open up,” Rasmussen said.

After getting the thumbs-up from SEDOL officials and CLC deans, Rasmussen collaborated with Michelle Proctor, Ph.D., a CLC education professor.

“Pairing with Michelle has been great because she brings her educational expertise,” said Rasmussen. “She helps CLC students learn how to connect with those who may need extra help.”

“Mentoring is an excellent way to apply teaching principles while giving CLC education majors important classroom experience in their freshman or sophomore years—as opposed to many four-year schools who often don’t provide classroom experience until a student’s senior year,” Proctor said.

“The practical experience helps solidify their commitment to their major, and they see that teaching is more than just pushing information into another person’s mind. It’s connecting with another human being, and the mentoring-through-magic program is a great way to build that connection.”

Health Department launches Kennedy named Lake igrow Lake County program County Associate Judge The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is pleased to announce the launch of igrow Lake County, a home visiting service for expectant mothers and families with children up to age 5 who reside in Lake County. Through the voluntary program, families are matched with a trained professional who provides one-on-one family support and coaching in the comfort of the family’s home.

“The first 5 years of life are critical in a child’s brain development, and parents play a huge role in building a strong foundation for their kids,” said Lisa Kritz, Director of Prevention for the Health Department. “Through igrow Lake County, we can help build stronger families, promote kindergarten readiness, and reduce child maltreatment.”

Through the program, the Health Department will coordinate intake for home visiting services provided

by ChildServ, One Hope United, and Family Focus. Trained home visitors provide developmental screenings, help parents understand and respond to their child’s needs, assist with discussing the child’s health with medical providers, and facilitate learning activities that strengthen the bond between parent and child. If the family needs additional support, the home visitor can provide information and referrals to community services.

“Babies don’t come with instruction manuals, and through igrow, we are here to help parents who may not have strong family support or experience with raising children,” said Edna Pompilus,

Coordinated Intake Specialist for igrow Lake County. “We are making it easier for parents to access home visiting services so they can become better parents and help their children reach their full potential.”

Research shows that evidence-based home visiting has a positive impact on parenting. Families who participate in home visiting are more likely to read aloud, tell stories, say nursery rhymes and sing with their children. These activities build listening, memory, and vocabulary skills.

“The underlying mission of igrow is to improve health outcomes by expanding equitable access to home visiting services,” said Jon Ashworth, Strategic Partnerships Manager for the Health Department. “This initiative began with a partnership in North Chicago, and we will continue to build upon that partnership as we also expand access in Waukegan, Zion, Round Lake, and Highwood, where we believe we can make a positive impact and address health disparities.”

All igrow Lake County services are provided at no charge to participating families. Funding for the program is provided through generous grants from the Steans Family Foundation and Gorter Family Foundation.

Chief Judge Diane E. Winter was notified on January 21, 2020, by Marcia M. Meis, Director of the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts, that Mr. Christopher M. Kennedy of Libertyville received the majority number of votes cast and is eligible for appointment to serve as an Associate Judge in Lake County. Kennedy will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Associate Judge Michael J. Fusz.

“Mr. Kennedy’s strong knowledge of the law, intellect, and professional demeanor will

make him an excellent addition to the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit. We look forward to Chris joining us as an Associate Judge in the near future,” said Chief Judge Winter.

Mr. Kennedy received his Bachelor of Arts in History from State University of New York at Binghamton in 1990.

In 1994, he earned his Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review.

He was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1994 and is a member of the Illinois State

Bar Association and the Lake County Bar Association. Mr. Kennedy currently serves as Deputy General Counsel for the Office of the Special Deputy Receiver and was a civil litigator for many years after serving as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Lake County. Mr. Kennedy received the distinction of being “highly recommended” by the Lake County Bar Association.

Chief Judge Winter will administer the oath of office to Christopher Kennedy on January 31, 2020.

Railway museum lists schedule The Illinois Railway Museum has announced that it has finalized its 2020 operating schedule. The schedule is available at www.irm.org/calendar.

A list of special events planned for 2020 is on the museum’s hours and admission page. Popular family-themed special events including Bunny Trolley Hop, Day Out With Thomas™, Pumpkin Train and Happy Holiday Railway are returning. Some of these events are being expanded with additional dates and attractions. Other popular events including Diesel Days, Night

Trains on Labor Day Weekend, and Museum Showcase Weekend are also returning in 2020.

Color coding on special event days has been changed to indicate whether the event requires a special ticket (coded red) or whether general admission rates apply (coded orange). Passes are not honored on specially-ticketed events.

One addition to the general operating schedule is that electric train operation will occur on Saturdays in April, starting on Saturday the 18th, for the first time in many years.

Another addition to the

schedule is that chartered train operation is now available on non-operating open weekdays (coded green) during the spring and fall. If you are interested in bringing a group to the museum and/or chartering a train on one of these dates, please contact our charter coordinator.

Court news Search for man who escaped custody in Lake Villa

On January 24, at approximately 1:35 p.m., after being taken into custody on two arrest warrants, Nicholas A. Valentino, 26, (no permanent address), escaped from custody.

Valentino Valentino was initially arrested in the 37400 block of North Cremona Avenue, Unincorporated Lake Villa. Sheriff’s deputies were initially dispatched to a residence for a drug investigation. While speaking to Valentino, sheriff’s deputies learned he had two outstanding arrest warrants. He was arrested and placed in the backseat of a squad car. The deputies briefly returned to the home to collect evidence. After collecting the evidence and returning to the squad car, Valentino had escaped.

Valentino had an active Lake County arrest warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle. He also had an active DuPage County arrest warrant for unlawful drug possession.

Valentino was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, black sweatpants, and gym shoes. He is 6’02,” 170 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes, with a short beard. Valentino had his hands cuffed behind his back.

Woman arrested for DUI, Scott’s Law violations after crashing into squad car

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Wadsworth woman for DUI and a Scott’s Law Violation after she drove drunk into a squad car.

On January 15 at approximately 10:35 p.m., a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traf- Kirschhoffer fic stop on a vehicle. That vehicle pulled over on eastbound Wadsworth Road just east of Delany Road, Wadsworth. While the sheriff’s deputy was speaking to the violator, the deputy had their emergency lights on the squad car active.

As the sheriff’s deputy was speaking to the traffic violator, a 2013 GMC Acadia, driven by Corey L. Kirschhoffer, 47, of the 39800 block of North Mauser Drive, Wadsworth, struck the rear-end of the squad car. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the crash.

Sheriff’s deputies determined Kirschhoffer was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail. Kirschhoffer was subsequently charged with: two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol (misdemeanors), failure to yield to an emergency vehicle (Scott’s Law), and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident (traffic infraction).

Burglar arrested, evidence recovered from other burglaries during search

On January 22, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in the 35300 block of North Nielsen Drive, Unincorporated Round Lake, for a report of recovered stolen property. While sheriff’s deputies were responding, Lake County Sheriff’s Telecommunicators obtained information from 911 callers that the suspect in possession of the stolen property was being detained by good SaSchuerr maritans.

Further investigation revealed a man from Gurnee saw tools he was interested in purchasing on ‘Facebook Marketplace.’ The person he was communicating with, Michael J. Schuerr, 39, of the 35300 block of North Nielsen Drive, Unincorporated Round Lake, was the seller of the tools. Schuerr gave the Gurnee man his home address to buy the items.

The Gurnee man arrived in the area and couldn’t immediately locate Schuerr’s address. The Gurnee man saw one of Schuerr’s neighbors outside and asked him if he knew where Schuerr lived, informing the neighbor he was there to buy tools from Schuerr. The neighbor, having recently been burglarized and having tools stolen during the burglary, decided he would walk the Gurnee man to Schuerr’s house. When the two arrived, Schuerr opened his garage door and the neighbor saw his toolbox and tools which were stolen in the burglary.

The neighbor confronted Schuerr and Schuerr immediately closed his garage door and fled from the residence. The neighbor, along with another good Samaritan, followed Schuerr and eventually detained him until sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Sheriff’s detectives furthered the investigation and obtained a search warrant for Schuerr’s residence, as he was the suspect in other area burglaries. Sheriff’s detectives recovered property stolen from other area residents while conducting the search warrant.

After reviewing the facts, evidence, and circumstances, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Schuerr: two counts of burglary (class 3 felonies), three counts of theft (class 4 felonies).

Schuerr also had an active failure to appear arrest warrant for unlawful possession of hypodermic needles.

Additional charges are possible.

Schuerr remains held at the Lake County Jail on $35,000 bail. He is next due in court on February 13, 2020, at 1:30 p.m.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Driver charged with aggravated DUI

Following a thorough investigation by Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators, they determined the driver of the Nissan Altima, Juan C. Aguiar, 37, of the 1100 block of Mary

Jane Lane, Waukegan, was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the crash that killed a 23-year-old Aguiar passenger in his vehicle.

On January 21, 2020, crash investigators met with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office to review the facts and evidence collected during the investigation. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges and drafted an arrest warrant for Aguiar for the following charges: two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol (class 2 felonies), aggravated driving under the influence of drugs (cocaine) (class 2 felony), aggravated driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs (class 2 felony).

Crash investigators then appeared in court where a Judge approved and signed the arrest warrant, setting bond at $750,000.00.

Aguiar was arrested without incident at his residence in the evening on January 21. He remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

Fatal Beach Park Traffic Crash (issued 5/12/19) On May 12, 2019, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Green Bay Road and Kenosha Road, Beach Park, for a traffic crash with injuries. When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived, they found a red 2014 Nissan Altima had been involved in a single-vehicle crash and there was major damage to the vehicle. The Altima also struck the Benton Township Assessor’s Office Building (40020 N Green Bay Road).

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Nissan, a 36-year-old male of Chicago, was traveling southwest on Kenosha Road. As the driver approached Green Bay Road (controlled by a stop sign), the driver didn’t stop, crossed Green Bay Road, struck an embankment, and then struck the Benton Township Assessor’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, via Flight for Life Helicopter, with critical life-threatening injuries. The front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old male of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was transported to Vista East Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The back-seat passenger, a 23-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Wanted man in possession of firearm apprehended by Sheriff’s Warrants Team

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service – Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS-GLRFTF) apprehended a man wanted on a New York felony arrest warrant for criminal possession of a firearm, bail jumping, and conspiracy 2nd degree drug sales.

On January 16 the Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team in conjunction with USMS-GLRFTF appre-

hended Eduardo Gutierrez, 21. Gutierrez resides in the 0-100 block of 4th Street in New Rochelle, NY, but was avoiding apprehension by staying at a residence in the 500 block of Oak Street, Waukegan. The arrest warrant out of New York was a no-bond warrant.

Earlier this month, the Sheriff’s Warrants Team received information from the USMS-New Jersey/New Gutierrez York Task Force that Gutierrez might be hiding in the Waukegan area. Further investigation

by Sheriff’s Warrants Deputies determined Gutierrez was staying at the residence on Oak Street.

On January 16, 2020, members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team arrested Gutierrez without incident at the Oak Street residence. Gutierrez was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic pistol with an obliterated serial number.

Gutierrez was transported to the Lake County Jail and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved additional charges of: Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number (class 3 felony), aggravated unlawful use/possession of a weapon (class 4 felony), and fugitive from justice.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Man wanted for first-degree rape apprehended by Sheriff’s Warrants Team

The Lake C o u n t y S h e r i ff ’s Office Warrants Team in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service – Bass Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS-GLRFTF) apprehended a man in Gurnee who was wanted on an Alabama felony arrest warrant for 1st Degree Rape and 1st Degree Sodomy. The arrest warrant originates from Elmore County, Alabama.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrant’s Team received information from USMS – Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task indicating Demetrius Dionte Bass, 22, of the 500 block of Ridley Avenue, LaGrange, Georgia, might be in the Lake County area avoiding apprehension.

Members of the sheriff’s warrants team conducted a fugitive apprehension investigation and determined Bass was likely staying at a hotel in the 5000 block of Grand Avenue, Gurnee. Warrants deputies set up surveillance at the hotel and observed Bass walking through the parking lot at approximately 2:30PM on January 23, 2020. Warrants deputies surrounded Bass and took him into custody without incident.

Bass was transported to the Lake County Jail where he remains held on no bail, pending extradition to Alabama.

Volo Bog State Natural Area, Moraine Hills State Park & McHenry Dam seek volunteers The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers for the following positions: Docents Volo Bog Docents are outgoing self-starters and motivated learners with an interest in nature and the environment.

They enjoy interacting with people, greeting visitors, answering a variety of questions regarding Volo Bog and general nature, staffing the Friends of Volo Bog’s Tamarack Shop and assisting with interpretive projects in the Visitor Center.

Training sessions provide the information and skills needed to be an effective docent. Docents commit to a minimum of one weekend day per month for one year.

Two-day training: February 22 and March 7, from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm each day, followed by shadowing three experienced docents before Docenting solo.

Weekend Bog Naturalists Volo Bog SNA’s Weekend Bog Naturalists lead two bog tours one weekend day each month. Like YPNs WBNs are motivated learners who enjoy interacting with people. There is no typical weekend tour – group size can range from 2 – 3 people up to 20, and ages are mixed and unpredictable – but attendees are curious and choose to be on the tour.

Two-day training: February 22 and March 7, from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm each day, followed by shadowing three experienced volunteers for three tours before leading one’s own. Apply and register by contacting VBSNA at dnr.volobog@illinois.gov or 815-344-1294.

Youth Program Naturalists Volo Bog State Natural Area’s Youth Program Naturalists lead guided bog tours for school groups and/or youth groups. Current openings are for Wednesdays or Thursdays (Weekly) and Weekends (one or more day per month). The ideal candidate enjoys working with groups students from 2nd grade – High School. YPNs are motivated learners interested in learning about Volo Bog from its glacial beginnings, through its ecological and historic significance, to its current status as an Illinois Nature Preserve.

YPNs are curious to learn about plants and animals on site.

Two-day training: Thursday, March 19 and Wednesday, March 26, from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm each day, followed by shadowing three experienced volunteers before leading on one’s own. Apply by contacting VBSNA at dnr.volobog@illinois.gov or 815-344-1294.

Bluebird Monitors Bluebird Monitors check the progress of nesting birds in bird houses from mid-March through mid-August. This involves light to moderate walking through a variety of weather conditions. Monitors then turn in data at the end of the nesting season. Bluebird monitoring is ideal for individuals, friends, couples or small families. A minimum five-month commitment is necessary. Trails are available at the state sites as well as at county and private locations.

New monitors training is Saturday, March 21 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. New monitors will be assigned required reading and mentored by existing monitors.

Prairie & Native Garden

Volunteers Gardeners tend the native demonstration gardens throughout the parks beginning with spring clean-up in March. Each year, some new plants are planted followed by weed control (hand pulling) throughout the growing season.

Fall involves seed collecting. A minimum commitment of eight months (mid March – Mid November) takes the volunteer gardener through the complete growing season. Gardens are available at all the state sites.

New Gardeners are asked to attend the kick-off meeting on March 23 at 9:30 am – 12:00 noon at Volo Bog State Natural Area. Apply and register by contacting VBSNA at dnr. volobog@illinois.gov or 815344-1294.

Habitat Restoration and Stewardship Team Teams meet bi-weekly on Tuesdays, alternating between Moraine Hills State Park & Volo Bog State Natural Area. Each team tackles invasive species and assists with plantings and seed gathering. Open to adults.

Crane Monitors in McHenry County In cooperation with the International Crane Foundation and McHenry County Audubon, crane monitors sit in the wee hours of the morning from 5:30 am – 7:30 am one day each year – April 18 in 2020. Data is recorded on the presence and behaviors of birds observed, then submitted same day online. New monitors will have required reading and a training video. Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside, Illinois is home to Volo Bog – the state’s only remaining open-water quaking bog where the trees shake with ones steps and carnivorous pitcher plants and other endangered species find habitat among the moss.

Moraine Hills State Park south of McHenry, Illinois is one of the IDNR’s most visited parks with over 10 miles of trails for hiking and bicycling, fishing, and playgrounds. The Fox River and McHenry Dam are a popular destination.

Volunteers at these state sites have a passion for nature and the environment and enjoy time outdoors. The ideal volunteer is a reliable self-starter and a motivated learner. Training and mentoring provide the information and skills needed.
