Spring Grove stages drive-through holiday event

While Illinois is still under a stay-at-home order issued by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on March 20, life as we knew it has come to a halt. Events, social outings and even family gatherings have been put on hold – including Easter celebrations.

However, that wasn’t entirely the case in Spring Grove last week thanks to one local official.

Janice Bannon, recreation director for the Village of Spring Grove, was recently cleaning out a drawer and

came across an old photo of her children with the Easter bunny. Her children are now 21, 20 and 18 so her days of Easter bunny photos are long gone, but her excitement over the holiday isn’t.

Bannon put her mind to work and received approval from the village to host a safe social distance bunny viewing on Sunday, April 5, at Horse Fair Park. Along with the viewing she turned the park into an eye-spy egg hunt.

Guests of the drive-by bunny viewing were challenged to find and count the 63 large

eggs that were placed along the car route.

Bannon was busy playing the role of Mrs. Peter Cottontail and said the excitement of the children driving by in the cars was something she will never forget. Children were yelling out to the Easter bunny and holding up pictures that they had made to show Bannon.

The holiday event brought in more than 150 vehicles and gave more than 300 children and their parents the chance to visit the Easter bunny – even if it was from afar.

CLC offering study abroad trip to United Arab Emirates

Participate in the Northern Illinois Dawn Watch from your backyard Stacy Iwanicki, Natural Resources Coordinator for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at Volo Bog State Natural Area, Moraine Hills State Park & McHenry Dam State Park invites you to participate in the Northern Illinois Dawn Watch on Saturday, April 18.

This is a COVID-19 socially distancing compliant event because the location for it is your porch, deck, gazebo, or in your yard.

From 5:30-7:30 a.m. you are asked to take inspiration from Aldo Leopold and get to know the birds and wildlife in your own yard or neighborhood. Using what would have been the two-hour time window of the International Crane Foundation’s Annual Midwest Crane Count, let’s each sit on our own porch, deck, or out in the yard itself. Your bird sightings can be submitted to eBird. org (check it out if you are not already signed up). The stories will then be compiled for an article in the next Friends’ Newsletter.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the next exciting place where College of Lake County (CLC) students can study abroad thanks to a new partnership with Ajman University. Ajman University is in the top 2.8% of universities worldwide (QS Rankings) and is in the top 10 worldwide for its inclusiveness and support for international students. The UAE program with Ajman University will exist as an annual short-term study abroad opportunity for CLC students and join our other annual shortterm study abroad program offering in Japan. The Center for International Education at CLC established this new, culturally enriching experience for students interested in international sustainability.

Instructions for a Rewarding Dawn Watch are as follow: Prepare your watch area ahead of time. Set out a lawn chair or some such comfortable seat to keep you off the damp or wet ground.

Scout the pathway to your spot so you’ll be comfortable walking it in the dark. 5:30 a.m. is no time to discover tripping hazards in your yard; especially important if you’re leaving your porch or deck.

Dress much warmer than you think will be necessary; you won’t generate much heat while sitting still. A blanket and a water-proof cover may be a welcome item.

Water-resistant footwear keeps feet dry in the dewy morning.

Binoculars, if you have them, are a nice plus and can work better in the dark than you’d think.

A flashlight/phone-light can help you get to your spot and settled in the pre-dawn hours, but do not use it once your watch commences so as not to startle the wildlife.

The beam of light will also blind you to anything outside it. Let your eyes adjust to the dark and be amazed by how well you’ll be able to see.

Watching solo is the most powerful. If you watch with a partner, sit far apart and do your best to not talk at all throughout the time period. Your silence will help you blend into your surroundings and become ‘invisible’ to the critters around you. This is what allows the magic to commence.

Take notes. You can use a good old-fashioned notebook like Leopold. If you use your mobile device to take notes, be sure to have the light dimmed down as far as you can and still be able to see, for reasons stated above.

hosted His Highness (HH) Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi, a member of the Ajman royal family in the UAE. HH Sheikh Abdul Aziz, better known as the “Green Sheikh,” spoke on campus about his advocacy for youth leadership and activism for environmental issues.

During his campus visit, the Green Sheikh invited CLC student Kamden Kuklinski to visit the UAE and pilot a new study abroad program with Ajman University. Having never left the country before, Kuklinski traveled halfway around the world in February with Jacob Cushing, director of the Center for International Education and Jill Bruellman, associate professor, chair of the English Language Instruction program, and the International Education Faculty Coordinator.

“Although I was in a vastly different environment while exploring the desert, mosques, and new cities, I felt at home in the UAE mostly due to the warm hospitality I experienced at each and every turn.,” said Kuklinski.

“This journey was incredibly life-changing and the experience was truly priceless.”

Students, like Kuklinski, will enjoy many cultural experiences, lots of language exposure and even volunteer work.

This program offers students a trip to the top of the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building), a leadership seminar at a traditional Desert Camp, journey through the historical Ajman Palace and a visit to the Dubai Sustainable City.

“Studying abroad is rooted in students celebrating the ability to push their limits and

venturing beyond their comfort zones,” said Cushing. “This is exactly what Kamden did with his time in the UAE and surely what our other students will experience as they travel and immerse themselves in Emirati culture, architecture, sustainability, and the Arabic language. It’s our hope this new country offering for CLC study abroad programs will provide students with additional opportunities in which to expand their knowledge of the world and to further promote our goal of ensuring we graduate global citizens.”

Big-city and small-town legislators balance duties as return date to Springfield remains uncertain

State Rep. Martin Moylan and his staff thought they were ahead of COVID-19.

Shortly after Illinois saw its first two cases of novel coronavirus disease in late January, the Democrat from Des Plaines filed House Bill 5607. The bill would have authorized a study to examine if the state departments of public health and emergency management were prepared for COVID-19.

“We wanted to get everybody in the state aware of what was going on,” Moylan said.

However, as has been a theme of this growing pandemic, COVID-19 did not care about the schedule of the state Legislature. By the time Moylan’s preparedness study bill was assigned to a substantive committee on March 17, 160 people in Illinois had contracted the virus, one had died, and Gov. JB Pritzker had already ordered schools and non-essential businesses closed.

“Nobody had the foresight to see how bad it really was,” Moylan said.

Now, instead of preparing for the effects of COVID-19, Moylan and other state lawmakers are living them. For Moylan, a 69-year-old with asthma who lives in a hot spot for coronavirus cases, life has become a “balancing act” of taking care of constituents and also taking care of his health.

“I’m very active in the community. I ride my bike all over, I talk to people. That stopped,” he said.

Moylan said he now drives around his district once every

day, and when he stops to talk with people, he said he rolls down his window instead of getting out.

“We’re concerned about catching it and actually dying,” he said of himself and his fellow legislators over 50 years old.

“Some are doing home projects, another one won’t go out of the house,” Moylan added. “He’s got same issues I got. He says there’s no way he’s going back to Springfield. He’s ‘not going to die,’ he says.”

Moylan said his entire staff is working remotely, trying to help constituents with their dilemmas, from a routine fallen tree to applying for unemployment during an economic collapse.

“It’s the same gambit, but there are additional problems that are like being affected because people are out of work, kids aren’t in school,” he said.

“We’re a middle class community that has a lot of working people that work in service jobs,” he added. “So naturally, they’re suffering, and they don’t know what the future is.”

Downstate life upended The reality of COVID-19 has not just thrown curveballs to Chicago area lawmakers, but to downstate districts as well.

“I really miss a lot of the interaction with the people,” said state Rep. Dan Swanson, a Republican from the small western Illinois town of Alpha.

The usual gatherings in his five-county rural district, like FFA banquets and school events, have ceased because

of social distancing guidelines and mandatory school closures.

“But through phone calls and messaging and email we try and stay on top of the top issues,” such as unemployment and help for small businesses, Swanson said of his staff working remotely.

“It’s just a whole new different way of doing business,” he said.

Small-town main streets throughout rural Illinois, Swanson said, have especially borne the economic impacts of people staying in their homes.

Brady said his district office is still open, as he and his staff often work late into the evening to assist each individual constituent.

That means serving everyone from “the lady who calls and doesn’t have a computer but still wants to file an unemployment claim” to “the person who is high tech enough, has a computer, does everything, but still wants to convey me their thoughts,” Brady said.

COVID-19 has “put me in a position of becoming an informational officer that I’ve never been before,” he added.

Moylan agreed.

“You’ve got to just keep going,” he said. “I have an obligation to take care of residents and then you’ve got to take care of yourself.”

“The small businesses, the beauty shops or whatever you want to call them, places like that have really been hit the hardest,” he said. “Not getting that noon day or evening crowd at the local bar and grill type thing has been pretty different.”

College towns, which rely heavily on the economic boost of university students during the spring semester, have also suffered.

“My office is located in uptown Normal, where normally it is the hustle and bustle of Illinois State University,” said Rep. Dan Brady, “and it’s basically a ghost town.”

The central Illinois Republican said that since Pritzker issued the stay-at-home order two weeks ago, he has heard the concerns of “scared” restaurant, bar and retail owners.

“The springtime would represent so many things for them in their shops with events with sororities and mom’s day,” he said, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, that “is not the case and won’t be the

Praise for Pritzker Though the fast-moving COVID-19 pandemic squashed any chance of a preparedness study, Moylan has nothing but praise for how Pritzker and state health leaders have responded.

“The governor is doing a great job of how he’s handling it,” Moylan said.

Brady, who serves as the deputy Republican leader in the House, applauded Pritzker for his communication and decision-making.

“I think the governor’s making very difficult decisions and doing that with the best interests of the people that he represents at heart, and listening to those in the different medical fields and professional fields to help him,” Brady said.

Though Swanson said he is reserving criticism of the

governor because he does not have access to the same data and information that Pritzker does, he is “frustrated” by the closing of state parks.

“People have called saying, ‘Why can’t I go fishing at the state park, or why can’t I go golfing?’ Those are the ones that are kind of hard to explain,” he said. “When dads and kids are home right now, it’d be a great time to do a little bonding around the fishing hole or going golfing or something like that.”

Return to Springfield uncertain Lawmakers have not been at the Capitol since March 5 after three straight weeks of session were canceled by leadership. Though the official legislative calendar lists the House and Senate on a prescheduled recess until April 21, Moylan said lawmakers are “on call” to return at any time.

Swanson, like many legislators, said he does not have a “crystal ball” to determine when legislators will return, but with the stay-at-home order running through the end of April, “I’d say that probably means us too.”

Pritzker echoed that thought on Wednesday during his daily COVID-19 press briefing.

“It’s hard to do, there are 177 members of the General Assembly and we’re asking people to stay home and not congregate in groups of more than 10,” he said. “Some governors might think this is a dream, that you can’t get your legislature together, but we have things that we need to get done in the state of Illinois.”

Of the things that need to get done, Brady said the top priority will likely be the budget, which the Illinois Constitution requires be in place by the end of June.

“I can’t think that with the priority of things, that it won’t be everything focused on budget, trying to have some framework of a budget and what we can do with what will be the lack of revenues, the like we sure haven’t seen before.”

Pritzker, who proposed a $42 billion budget in, is also aware of the impending revenue crater.

“I don’t think I could list all the changes that would need to be made to the original budget,” he said.

And although estimating the exact revenue shortfall is “very difficult” right now, Pritzker said, “It will be a vastly different budget. There’s no doubt about that.”

An eventual return to the Capitol, though, does not necessarily mean a return to normalcy. Even the nation’s top public health experts have found it hard to predict when this crisis will end or when its economic consequences will begin to subside.

For Swanson, he likens it to the first day planes were flying after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“It wasn’t for several days you finally heard that first airplane that kind of brought you back to normalcy,” he said. “I think when we see that first local restaurant, that bar and grill or whatever open up, then we’ll see that we’re back to a kind of normalcy again.”

The Illinois Department of Human Services announced that more than 450,000 Illinois households will receive additional Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. That began April 8.

All who are eligible for the additional benefits should receive them by April 20.

The additional funds are intended to help Illinoisans obtain food and support for their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. The maximum SNAP benefit amounts will be implemented for April and May. “No Illinoisan should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, especially during an ongoing public health emergency,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “Expanding the amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits people receive will help families stay safe and healthy in the coming months.”

Increased benefits will be automatically loaded onto SNAP recipients’ Link cards, and there is no need for anyone to re-apply, visit an office, or call. All new applications authorized in April will also receive the maximum allotment for their household size.

Be aware of potential COVID-19 scams Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim said his office has been advised that scammers are making phone calls posing at health care workers or companies offering COVID-19 tests. In many cases, these scammers claim they are able to either obtain tests for people or are able to get test results to people quicker. In these cases, the person is asked to pay in cash or hand over personal identifying information in ex-

change for the test.

“In most cases, these crimes are preventable by using common sense,” State’s Attorney Nerheim said. “People should always be wary of any business, charity, government or individual requesting payments in cash, wire transfers, or gift cards through the mail. In addition, people should never share identifiable personal or financial information with any unknown sources.”

The Lake County Health Department, Illinois Department of Public Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will never send an employee to the home of a person to sell a COVID-19 test. County Board approves commitment to helping agencies that provide emergency shelter At its April 7 meeting, the Lake County Board voted to approve setting aside $100,000 of 2020 Video Gaming Revenue (VGR) grant funds in the event the money is needed to reimburse local agencies for emergency shelter expenses incurred because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds are normally used to fund behavioral health programs.

In Lake County, agencies like PADS Lake County and A Safe Place that provide services to the homeless and to victims of domestic violence normally provide shel-

ter in group settings. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these types of arrangements would pose high risk to those clients. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued guidance that emergency shelter can and should be provided in non-congregate settings.

Local programs that offer emergency shelter have been shifting clients to hotels and motels, and relying on vouchers to cover the costs, which are rapidly mounting for these social service agencies.

“I’m proud that our board

voted unanimously to set aside this money”, said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. “It’s so important that we do what we can to help house our most vulnerable residents during this crisis.”

The board voted to reserve $100,000 in funds from video gaming revenue to supplement other federal and state funding, in the event that the magnitude of shelter needs exceeds the capacity of state, federal and other funds to cover the costs. If the funds are not needed, they can be reverted back to their original purpose. “Right now, we’re

working to understand the magnitude of the total costs, and understand how state, federal and other funding resources will be able to cover that,” said Lake County Director of Planning and Development Eric Waggoner.

Homeless services needs are greater than they’ve been, and projections are that homeless needs will rise in the county due to so many people facing economic hardship. Waggoner said that PADS reports that it has double the number of clients that they would normally have in April.

Volunteers needed for COVID-19 response

Because of the outpouring of support from residents seeking to help the community, Lake County government has teamed up with the United Way of Lake County to coordinate local COVID-19 response volunteer opportunities.

“Even though this has been one of the most challenging times we’ve faced, it’s been inspiring to watch our residents and businesses come together to support those who need our help right now,” said

Volunteers are needed to serve meals to the homeless, deliver meals to seniors, provide general office support, and much more. Both telework and in person volunteer

opportunities exist.

Health Department commited to the safety of first responders during COVID-19 Lake County Health Department officials stand firm in their commitment to protect the health and safety of all Lake County residents and first responders, and to protect the confidentiality of its residents during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Lake County Health Department will not release the addresses of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), despite repeated requests to do so.

“I extend our deepest gratitude to our healthcare workers, public health professionals, first responders, and all essential employees who continue working and serving our community every day,” said Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister. “Your dedication is appreciated by every person in Lake County, and your health and safety are of utmost importance to us.”

COVID-19 is spreading in every Lake County community, and all residents and essential workers must follow social distancing guidelines and take precautions as if every person encountered may be infected and contagious. First responders are urged to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) on every call to keep themselves safe.

Providing addresses of positive COVID-19 cases provides a dangerous, false sense of security for our first responders. While 1,243 residents (less than .2 percent of the population) have tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 10, tens of thousands more may be infected who have not been tested, are awaiting test results, or do not yet have symptoms. Recent studies show that a significant portion of people infected with the virus have no symptoms and can still spread it to others.

“You must assume that in every home and business that you enter, every person you encounter could be infected and contagious,” Pfister said. “Please protect yourself during all of your interactions with the community. This is the only way you can keep yourself, your loved ones, your colleagues, and the community safe.”

The Health Department takes its obligation to protect residents’ personal and private health information very seriously. The Health Department protects the privacy of residents who have HIV, hepatitis, or any other health condition, and COVID-19 is no different.

“For all first responders, I again want you to know how grateful we are for your service and bravery. And thank you, Lake County residents, for all you are doing to slow the spread of COVID-19. We will continue to be here for you. Together, we will get through this,” Pfister said.

Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to ‘lock it up’ The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to keep a watchful eye on their lawn tractors, zero turn mowers, and other heavy duty lawn equipment and to always “lock it up”.

Thieves can be watching for opportunities of equipment and buildings that are left unsecure. The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to look after equipment between uses, not just every few weeks.

Heavier equipment, like zeroturn mowers and lawn tractors

may be sought because of their high price value. Equipment should have the keys removed and secured. Storage areas, garages, outbuildings, pole barns, should be locked and closely looked after.

Security cameras in good working order and that have recording capabilities can be helpful to document suspicious persons and activity. But the best deterrence to help protect your valuables is you. · Be attentive. · Report suspicious persons

and activity timely to police. · Keep documents and photos of serial numbers and equipment. · Watch out for your property, family, friends, and your neighborhood.

Residential brush pick up day is April 16 The Village of Richmond Public Works Department residential brush pick up program runs from April through November on the third Thursday of the month.

This month’s brush pick up is Thursday, April 16, weather permitting.

The following guidelines established for the brush pick up service are:

• Branches must be less than six inches in diameter and less than six feet in length • No lumber (boards, planks, decking, etc.) will be accepted • No grass clippings or yard waste • No stumps • All branches must be piled curbside, cut end towards the street • Place brush out by 7:00 a.m.

Open burning ordinances in McHenry County Open burning of landscape waste in the county may take place on Saturdays and Sundays from dawn through dusk during the months of April and May. The burning of landscape waste is permitted only when winds are less than 10 mph and the burning site must be a minimum of 100’ from any principal structure and supervised at all times by an individual at least 18 years of age. A fire extinguisher, garden hose

or water source must be available at the burning site.

It can cause asthma attacks and can lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress, excessive burning will only cause further complications.

Managing stress, eating wisely especially important now With the majority of America under stay-at-home orders to help thwart the COVID-19 pandemic, managing stress and eating healthy foods are critical steps in fighting the virus now and building a healthy lifestyle for the long-term.

That’s the word from Dr. Melanie Smith, a 1982 College of Lake County graduate who is a family practice physician at Advocate Aurora Medical Center in Burlington, Wis. “With many homes now stocked full of food supplies, the best way to prevent rapid weight gain is to reduce the stress that often creates an urge to eat,” said Smith, who has a special interest in helping patients fight obesity.

“Stress produces a hormone, ghrelin, that makes you feel

hungry. If you’re starting to feel a need to eat something, drink a glass of water and see if the hunger is still there. Then go for walk. Also, use your preferred ways to manage stress, whether it’s deep breathing, meditation or praying to help you stay on course.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic now occupying most of the 24/7 news cycle, Smith said one daily routine she’s changed in the last three weeks is to avoid watching the news or going on social media in the evening. “I do night meditation,” said Smith, who added that many of her patients are now feeling anxious, depressed or having difficulty sleeping at night.

“Anything to reduce stress at

end of the day is important.”

Besides controlling food cravings by managing stress, eating healthy foods is important as it can help build up one’s immunity to viruses.

“Our immune system is affected by diet, so when you shop for groceries or order take-out food from restaurants, make sure to choose healthy options such as fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains,” Smith advised. “Packaged foods may be convenient and have a longer shelf life than fresh foods, but they (packaged foods) tend to be high in salt content and are not as healthy as fresh produce or fish.”

Smith, who has been a practicing physician for 25 years, said she now dons a surgical mask when reporting

to work and is meeting with patients via phone and video conference.She added that her clinic currently has enough personal protective equipment (PPE). Additionally, the clinic has proactively set up a tent outside where people with COVID-19 symptoms are being diverted.

Finding the positive amid the pandemic, Smith said she and her colleagues have been grateful for the outpouring of support from the Burlington community. “The local coffee shop and pizza place have delivered donated coffee and food to our clinic,” she said.

“One of my patients is making face shields from a laser printer. Another one made cloth masks. People are really stepping up. It’s wonderful to

see everyone working together.”

The collaborative spirit also means continuing to heed the advice of health care experts. “The biggest thing people can do to help fight the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home,” she said. “If you have questions, call your doctor first. If your child has sniffles, don’t bring him or her into a clinic. Please call first and speak with a doctor. We don’t want children or anyone getting COVID-19 from health care workers.”

Smith earned an A.D.N. (associate degree in nursing) from CLC in 1982 and a B.S.N. in nursing from the University of Illinois-Chicago. Later, she received her D.O. degree from the Mid-

western University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Smith completed her residency at the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine at Chicago/Christ Hospital. In 2010, she was CLC’s nominee for the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.

Smith said she considers COVID-19 to be the “biggest crisis” of her lifetime, adding that it will force many to re-evaluate priorities. “It will be long time for our society to recover from this, economically, emotionally and psychologically,” she said. “I hope we’ll place renewed value on life’s important things, such as family, loved ones and community.”

“We want to help students learn,” said John Flaherty, a former high school and special education teacher and current president of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. “Our members are ready to help students build their learning skills and tutor in highly advanced subject areas like chemistry and mathematics.

“For elementary students,

learning is a foreign concept.

A teacher-mentor will help students take their own initiative and focus their learning at their own pace.”

energize their children into athome students,” Association Executive Director Jim Bachman said. “Retiree-mentors can specifically target aspects of learning that need the most attention, whether it’s mathematics, science, history, writing or reading.”

“Younger students may simply need help reading a story; other students will need advanced tutoring. If we retirees can find a way to help, we will,” Flaherty added.

Driver services extended again, says Secretary of State Jesse White Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White on Friday, April 10, announced his office filed emergency rules extending expiration dates for driver’s licenses, identification (ID) cards, vehicle registrations and other transactions and document filings for at least 90 days after Driver Services facilities reopen.

The previous extension was for 30 days.

“Extending expiration dates by at least 90 days after Driver Services facilities reopen is the right thing to do,” said White.

“It will ensure driver’s licenses, ID cards and vehicle registrations remain valid during this pandemic and will help allevi-

ate the rush of customers visiting facilities once they reopen.”

Following Gov. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order, White closed Driver Services facilities to the public through April 30. While facilities are closed to the public, White is encouraging residents to go to www. cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of many online services—such as renewing vehicle registration stickers—from the comfort of their own home.

People who conduct online transactions will further help to reduce the number of face-toface transactions that will occur at Driver Services facilities once they reopen.

Some of these online ser-

vices include: • Renewing a vehicle registration; • Applying for a vehicle title and registration; • Obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card; • Obtaining a driving record abstract; • Renewing a standard driver’s license with the Safe Driver Renewal program.

“My commitment is to do everything we can to help protect the health and safety of our residents, while still providing services to the people of Illinois,” said White. “This will, and must, continue to be the guiding principle of our decision making.”

Slices of life

Challenges lead to growth, especially for class of 2020 Everyone is sacrificing at some level. The current worldwide situation is touching each of us in a truly personal way. I don’t want to dismiss or make light of anyone’s circumstance, but as the mom of a high school senior, I feel their burden in my heart and soul.

For a long time, I’ve contemplated writing a column about sacrifice, but it was going to be about a parent’s sacrifice. We do it a lot, without even thinking. I thought perhaps other moms and dads could relate. But knowing what I know now about how the rug can be pulled out from under us in the blink of an eye makes writing about my own superficial sacrifices seem selfish.

home directive has us all in mourning because we all are dealing with our own personal sense of loss. And for me, I truly mourn for the high school seniors who may have many of their lasts ripped from them.

A last spring break that they were required to experience in a state of “self- quarantine.” Last prom. Last spring sports season. Singing the school song one last time with their buddies. Senior slideshow.

Baccalaureate.

Last quarter with the

friends they’ve known since preschool. Senior banquet.

Wearing the cap and gown in a formal graduation ceremony. Graduation open houses. Shaking hands.

Hugging their friends.

Simply being seniors and at the top of the world for the next few months.

Small things in the big scheme of things? Perhaps.

But it depends on whom you ask, I guess.

In the meantime, they are learning about distance learning, sheltering in place and toilet paper shortages.

They are young and feel invincible, but they are affected by this tragedy.

They are growing up – maturing – too soon and too fast.

These are unprecedented times.

The senior class of 2020

has put in their time and they’ve earned a great ending to their public education and senior year.

But life isn’t always fair.

Heck, it’s hardly ever fair.

They unfortunately learned this lesson early on; 9/11 was never just a couple of numbers to them. It was something much greater, much more devastating.

This is not to downplay the seriousness of what our nation is experiencing.

I fear for those who are at higher risk for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

I have an elderly dad who would be clobbered by the disease, so I get it.

I have friends who work in medical careers, law enforcement and other essential jobs and I applaud them. They are superheroes.

Everyone – vulnerable or

in the trenches – deserves our thoughts, prayers and behavior changes. We have to work together now to make everyone as safe as possible.

Still, as a mom of a senior in high school, I mourn. For lost experiences.

For lost time with friends.

For sacrifices that I’d surely make in his place if I could, but I can’t. Moms and dads can’t help but be selfish for their children. And although I understand some may see my stance as selfish, I mourn – with real tears and real honesty.

I believe this group of young people is destined for greatness. They’ve certainly been dished a plateful from before they were even born.

This adversity will lead to something big. They are being challenged because challenge leads to growth.

I am hopeful that all won’t be lost. I am hopeful for my dad and the other individuals who are vulnerable. I am hopeful for the essential workers who still must go to their jobs each day. I am hopeful for people stranded on cruise ships or in another country unable to get home.

I am hopeful we can get this thing under control and we all can get back to our regular lives. But I am especially hopeful we can do this for the class of 2020.

Aides caring for vulnerable seniors amid coronavirus still on the job despite lack of masks, protective gear, social distancing

As the nation scrambles to keep its doctors and nurses supplied with safety gear during the deadly novel coronavirus outbreak, an army of low-wage Illinois home care workers on the front lines remain largely on their own.

Workers such as 57-yearold Karen Williams, whose resourceful son tracked down a few masks for her to wear each day as she takes two buses from Englewood to Bronzeville to care for elderly clients for whom she prepares meals, dispenses medication and helps with bathing.

“What I’ve been doing is reusing them. Maybe every two or three days I change them,” said Williams, who never considered staying home.

“I am always there when she is sick,” she told the Better Government Association while she was visiting one client. “When she gets sick, I get sick, and vice versa …

Because the client comes first, I am going to try to come as long as I can.”

Williams is among more than 40,000 workers in Illinois’ Community Care Program, which allows more than 100,000 seniors to stay out of nursing facilities by providing aides who visit the seniors in their homes.

The aides and clients are some of the most susceptible people to the pandemic, yet across Illinois many remain in close quarters, and lack protective equipment, such as masks and gloves.

As of April 7, the Illinois Department on Aging, which oversees the program, confirmed 5 deaths among 22 cases of Chicago-area seniors in the program who had tested positive for the virus, said the department’s spokesman Michael Dropka.

The private companies that employ the workers under a state contract are not required to report COVID-19 cases to the Department on Aging, Dropka said. The department knows some workers have tested positive, but cannot say how many.

Dropka, the labor union that represents these front-line caregivers, and the company executives who employ them said they are aware of the dangers inherent in allowing these two high-risk groups—elderly residents and caregivers––to mingle without proper protective gear.

He said the department has requested masks and other protective gear from state and federal emergency management officials. Company officials said they too are struggling to find enough gear to protect their workers.

Although home health-care aides are on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis in Illinois, they are not licensed or certified as health care workers. As the state gains access to gloves and masks, such workers do not qualify as “priority health care providers,” a category that is given priority access to protective equipment.

“The work that they are doing is extremely risky,” said Beth Menz, home care director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Illinois Indiana.

“They are in the homes of seniors, bathing them, dressing them, preparing food for them.

So there is fear in their minds that not only are they at risk, but could potentially put their families and their loved ones, who can also be in vulnerable categories, at risk.”

These workers have largely been left to fend for themselves during the crisis, according to interviews with the workers, seniors in the program and the union representing workers. In some cases, they’ve been provided no more than phone calls from employers asking them to check their temperature and reminding them to protect themselves by frequently washing their hands.

Reginald Griffin, 76, said he found five masks at his neighborhood hardware store on the city’s North Side.

“All I could buy as a customer,” he said. “So I have to be careful to keep them clean until I am able to get more.”

Griffin takes the bus each day to care for an 83-year-old man with diabetes, emphyse-

ma, and other chronic conditions that make it difficult for him to care for himself. He too never considered missing a day.

“I might think that way just like any other person in the front lines, but I have to do what I have to do,” Griffin said. “I have to think positively and do things so I won’t get it.”

Griffin was lucky enough to find protective gear on his own. Many don’t.

She’s my lifeline One 75-year-old woman told the BGA she is letting her home care worker dip into her personal stash of protective gloves.

“She’s my lifeline,” said Davetta Brooks, who suffers from several conditions, including an autoimmune disease, and relies on a wheelchair.

Nationwide, there are 12 million vulnerable Americans who rely on home-based services and are balancing social distancing with their need for help. Many of the seniors suffer from chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, and low immune systems that experts have warned put them at an increased risk of developing a severe form of pneumonia if infected with COVID-19. The deadly virus has a higher fatality rate for those older than 60, and even higher for those older than 85.

Black Americans at high rate of testing positive, dying from COVID-19 Another national concern is the high rate of black Americans testing positive and dying from COVID-19, a trend Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says is prevalent in the city where 72 percent of the virus-related fatalities are black.

In the Chicago area, the majority of seniors in the community care program are black, as well as the majority of caregivers, according to records and interviews. Nearly half of the caregivers are also older than 55.

While on their way to the scene, sheriff’s deputies learned Robert B. Hunter, Jr., 33, of the 400 block of Buckingham Drive, Crystal Lake, was breaking into a relative’s home and was armed with a pipe.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located Hunter inside the home. The deputies attempted to communicate with Hunter, advising him to exit the home. Hunter was non-compliant, attempted to slam the front door on the deputies, and retreated into the home. The deputies, including Sheriff’s K9 Diesel,

entered the home and Hunter threw a glass container at them.

He then attempted to barricade himself inside a bathRobert B. room.

Hunter S h e r i f f ’s deputies forced the bathroom door open and gave Hunter instructions to exit, warning him K9 Diesel would be released if he refused to comply. Hunter continued to refuse, and K9 Diesel was released. K9 Diesel bit Hunter on the arm and Hunter swung at K9 Diesel, striking him, causing K9 Diesel to bite Hunter a second time. Hunter was then taken into custody.

K9 Diesel was uninjured and a sheriff’s deputy sustained a minor cut to the head during the incident. Hunter

was transported to Northern Illinois Medical Center (NIMC) in McHenry, where he received treatment for the dog bite. Following the treatment, he was released back into the custody of sheriff’s deputies and transported to the Lake County Jail.

After reviewing the facts of the incident, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Hunter: Assault with a weapon (class 4 felony), aggravated resisting arrest (class 4 felony), criminal trespass to residence (class 4 felony), striking a Police Dog (class A misdemeanor), and violating an order of protection (class A misdemeanor).

Hunter was held in the Lake County Jail pending his initial court hearing All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

ditional supplies of personal protective equipment, including requesting supplies from FEMA. He said the department also is in daily communication with provider agencies and has taken guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health “regarding the screening tool and processes we use––so that both our in-home workers and the older adults they care for are safe when they do their work. The agencies in our network use this as part of any protocol where face-to-face contact with an older and more vulnerable adult occurs.”

“We are doing everything we can,” Dropka said.

Companies employing the workers also said they are scrambling to secure personal protective equipment due to the nationwide supply shortage and have asked the state for help. Some are providing gloves, which they’ve always offered to their workforce, but also are in need of masks and gowns.

A policy memo posted online by Addus HomeCare, one of the state’s largest providers of home care services, shows workers are being directed to use gloves, wash their hands regularly before and after direct contact with a client and encouraged to stay at home if they feel sick. If workers believe they may have been exposed, they are required to report to a supervisor.

If workers call in sick, they are asked five questions: Have they traveled internationally in the past 14 days; have they had signs of a respiratory infection such as fever, cough and/or sore throat; has anyone they live with had those symptoms; have they had contact with anyone who has been diagnosed or screened for COVID-19, and have they traveled to other states with widespread community transmission of the disease. Workers who fail the screening are instructed to cease patient visits.

But that’s just one protocol of more than 100 companies that provide home-based and community-based services to seniors.

Theresa Collins, president of the Illinois Association of Community Care Program Homecare Providers, said in an email that “each provider agency has developed their own plan of action based on the unique needs of their staff and participants.”

Providers, she added, are screening workers and the seniors they serve for coronavirus symptoms. If they fail the screening, they are asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Addus HomeCare, for example, asks clients the same five screening questions it asks employees when they call out sick. If the client fails the screening, the worker is required to notify their supervisor. If a client is quarantined or tests positive, the company would suspend services to the client and contact the state.

PPE availability Darby Anderson, chief strategy officer at Addus HomeCare, said he is receptive to clients and workers who are worried and anxious for more protective equipment.

“The problem is simply the availability of PPE. We cannot secure enough,” Anderson said.

The company is pushing for its workers to be considered “priority health care providers,” in hopes that the designation would ensure their access to gloves, masks and gowns.

Anderson said that designation becomes even more necessary if home care workers are asked to care for seniors as hospital beds fill up. Already, he said, the question has come up in at least two states. But before that happens, he said, there needs to be a protocol in place to protect the workers.

And that starts with protective equipment.

“We don’t want to say no, but we have to have the right PPE,” Anderson said. He said other issues to iron out would include whether $13-per-hour workers should receive hazard pay, and whether they should be provided hotel rooms to isolate themselves from their families during the outbreak.

Some seniors are already going without services, either

because they’ve paused them amid the COVID-19 crisis or because they haven’t been able to secure an aide.

Carolyn Crane, 68, said she was in the process of getting a new aide when the pandemic hit and now has been without one for more than six weeks.

“It’s really bad right now for me, personally,” said Crane, who has diabetes, high blood pressure and a compromised immune system.

Crane said she was paying a neighbor to fetch her groceries and sometimes paying for food to be delivered, but the increased costs cut a hole in her budget. She finally got a respite when the Illinois Institute of Technology moved its classes online, freeing her grandson to help her out. He’s staying with her and helping her with groceries and daily tasks, though she’d prefer to have a professional help her instead.

Debra Miller, 68, said the issues for seniors go beyond whether home care aides have proper equipment. In Chicago, there are thousands of seniors living in apartment buildings where they might be exposed to the virus inside elevators, when they pick up their mail or when they throw out their trash.

At an online press conference last week, Miller and other seniors who are members of Jane Addams Senior Caucus, a grassroots organization that advocates for seniors living in low-income housing, called on city officials to enact new guidelines to protect seniors. Among them: Requiring better cleaning regimens in communal spaces, providing protective equipment to staff; and stationing trained healthcare professionals to monitor temperatures of workers and guests entering apartment buildings.

Miller said she’s frustrated by some elected officials who only talk about protecting seniors, the most vulnerable population.

“I know that by now,” she said. “Tell me what you are doing besides.”

Lake County Forest Preserves urges people to follow social distancing rules

Lake County Forest Preserves is urging people to follow social distancing rules when approaching others on trails from behind or from the opposite direction to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “It is essential that family groups of two or more break into a single file line and move off on the right shoulder of the trail to allow maximum space when approaching or passing others,” said Ty Kovach, Lake County Forest Preserves executive director.

“At this time, we intend to keep preserves and trails open during the state’s stay-at-home order, but it is essential that visitors step aside and maintain a 6-foot separation between people or family groups at all times and follow other public health guidelines while in parking lots or on trails,” Kovach said. “If safe social distancing rules are not followed, we may be forced to close the trails and preserves immediately.”

“The vast majority of our preserve trails are designed to accommodate social distancing. Most are at least 8 feet wide and many are 10 or 12 feet wide,” said Director of Operations Mike Tully.

Forest Preserve staff urges visitors to be flexible and respectful of fellow trail users. As you share the trails in your Lake

County Forest Preserves with others, it is essential to maintain 6-foot social distancing at all times and on all sides.

When in the parking lot, wait until the area is clear of other nearby people before exiting or entering your car. “If a preserve parking lot is full, use our interactive trail map (www.LCFPD.org/maps/) to find another nearby preserve,” Tully said.

To date, all public buildings, restrooms, playgrounds, marinas, golf courses, visitor centers and dog exercise areas are closed. All educational programming has been canceled through the end of April. All picnic shelter and open area reservations and special use permits are canceled and future requests will not be accepted through the month of April.

Preserves are open 6:30 am to sunset but there is NO maintenance. Please pack it in, pack it out. Visitors are asked to leave no trash in the preserves, take everything out and recycle at home.
