Lake County Board working to address mental health crisis in the county
‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’ opens May 31 at PM&L “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” by Christopher Durang, directed by Mark Badtke (director of PM&L Theatre’s productions of “Steel Magnolias” and “Meet Me in St. Louis”), opens Friday,May 31, and runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until June 16. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. It tells the endearing and hilarious story of Vanya (Romeo Sobrepena) and Sonia (Lynn Homeier), two middle-aged siblings who share a home in Pennsylvania with their psychic housekeeper, Cassandra (Renee Johnson), and spend their time bickering and complaining about their lives. They’re visited by their glamorous sister, Masha (Sara Shalom), who visits with her hunky new boyfriend, Spike (Michael Farca). Masha worries about the presence of the lovely Nina (Jamie Lee Cortese), an aspiring actress. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” will run Fridays and Saturdays, May 31, June 1, June 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee performances will be June 2, 9 and 16 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at pmltheatre.com and are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. There is a growing need for crisis/wellness drop-off resources in Lake County for people struggling to manage their mental health. The Lake County Board recently acted to initiate a study for a Lake County Wellness Care and Drop Off Center. And in late April, Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart and ViceChair Mary Ross Cunningham hosted a full-day workshop to bring community members together to develop the vision for a Lake County Crisis Care Model. Studies show that one in five adults in the United States have experienced a mental health crisis. In 2018, the Lake County Health Department received 4,289 crisis calls from persons seeking mental health assistance. Even though the need is great, currently, the only options available for law enforcement officers responding to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis are transportation to jail for low-level offenses or to a hospital emergency department. “The vision of a crisis center in Lake County is shared by many people in the criminal justice system who see people cycle in and out of our jail due to their battle living with serious mental illness,” said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. “One woman was in and out of the Lake County Jail 17 times in
