Historical Society’s Cider Fest will offer demonstrations, car show and more Richard Hamilton, of Harvard, was asked to consider learning flintknapping while demonstrating bird banding several years ago at a festival in Belvidere. He embraced the challenge with his usual enthusiasm, and today is keen to demonstrate this dying art at events such as the McHenry County Historical Society’s Cider Fest this Sunday, Oct. 4.

Visitors to the 43rd annual Cider Fest also will be able to see broom maker Bob McCann at work, as well as a historic cider press. Thanks to COVID-19 restrictions over the summer, this year’s fall fest will be anchored by the Society’s antique car show – typically held in July.

Sponsored by Intren, O’Connor Electric and Prairie Community Bank, the free (donations requested) car show will feature sports, classic and antique cars. Top cars will receive trophies, including one for Best of Show. As in the past, a one-of-a-kind People’s Choice trophy and door prizes also will be presented. Face coverings and social distancing will be observed on the grounds and inside the museum, which will open for free, timed tours throughout the day. In addition, there will be restricted access to the Gannon family 1843 log cabin and 1895 West Harmony one-room school.

Hamilton said flint, chert and obsidian are used to making cutting instruments such as arrowheads – essential survival tools in the days before machines automated their manufacture.

“You can sit and make gravel with everybody else and then all of a sudden it grabs you. Then you go find yourself an old guy or old woman and they help you out,” Hamilton said. “Its just one of these skills you have to watch.

Student actors overcome virtual barriers to bring you ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ The comedic children’s fairytale from Hans Christian Anderson, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” is coming to a Zoom screen near you this October. This production adapted by Max Bush for young audiences is free online through College of Lake County’s theatre department.

Director Alicia Hall is working with four CLC student actors to embrace the virtual world we’re all living in during the pandemic to tell the story of a clever mother and son disguising themselves as weavers to convince a vain Emperor they can make him a beautiful and magical suit of new clothes. They explain the clothes are invisible and can only be seen by those who are clever and capable.

Everyone in the kingdom pretends they can see the clothes, until one child dares to speak the truth. Incorporating a love of acting and theater, this highly entertaining adaptation is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Theatre performances are exceptionally complex during the pandemic since everything is virtual. Nevertheless, actors, costume and set design is adapting to meet the challenge.

“Our student actors have to engage their imaginations a lot more than they normally would to create their

fellow actors in their shared space,” said director Alicia Hall. “Greenscreen acting is some of the hardest work they’ll ever have to do.”

Hall describes how hard everyone is working to create an impactful experience for the young audience who will tune in to watch: “So many times where I forget that we’re not all in the same room – that’s what we’re going for.”

Costume designer Sally Gill remarks that the crew is doing very interesting things with technology for this play.

“Sets are designed with wonderful drawings projected on green screens, so we will see actors in full costume, both close to the camera and far enough away so you can see them from head to toe.”

Set designer Tracie Folger said working with green screens has been a learning process. “I spent a lot of time experimenting with building screens at home and trying to design the screens so they can be easily transported and set up in student homes where students may or may not have tools to put things together. This play seemed like the perfect show to create green screen scenery because I can make the set look like pages of a children’s book.”

the lack of a live audience has also made a big difference. “As an actor you feed off the energy you get from the audience and their reactions, so this whole ‘acting on Zoom’ experience makes me really appreciate having a live audience.”

“Theatre provides people with a source of entertainment, challenges their thinking, and helps them escape into a different world,” Murphy said. “I like being able to provide that escape for people, especially during a time like the one we’re living in right now.”

In her director’s notes, Hall writes, “This wonderful adaptation embraces the power and magic of the theatre which is to tell truths through illusion. With humor and warmth, this clever play reminds the audience of the dangers of self-deception and the importance of truth and justice.”

Ex-Gov. George Ryan reflects on historic decision In new book, former governor describes decision to end death penalty in Illinois

By Peter Hancock Most soon-to-be former governors, on their way out of office, keep a low profile as they prepare to pass the torch on to their successor. But that wasn’t the case with George Ryan.

On Jan. 11, 2003, just two days before his term expired, Ryan made national and international news by commuting the sentences of all 167 inmates on Illinois’ death row.

Now, in a new book, “Until I Could Be Sure: How I Stopped the Death Penalty in Illinois,” the former Republican governor reflects on his painstaking, often emotional journey from being an early supporter of reinstating capital punishment to the man who almost singlehandedly brought it down.

“I guess I was just taking my time,” Ryan, now 86, said during an interview when asked why he chose to release the book now. “You know, I did what I could while I was there, and I wanted to get it researched and get it done and do it right.”

A pharmacist from Kankakee, Ryan rose through the ranks of Republican politics in Illinois, first helping run the campaign of former Rep. Edward McBroom, and later winning a seat on the Kankakee County Board of Supervisors.

He was elected to the Illinois House in 1972, the same year the U.S. Supreme Court struck

down the death penalty nationwide.

But the court would reverse itself four years later after several states, including Illinois, adopted new laws that they hoped would meet constitutional muster. The first one in Illinois, passed in 1973, was struck down by the Illinois Supreme Court. But in 1977, the General Assembly enacted another law that would survive court challenges.

Drawing extensively from House journals, Ryan recalls the passionate debate over House Bill 10, including the comments of Rep. Elroy Sandquist, a Chicago Republican, who asked, just as members were about to push their switches to vote yes or no: “Would you also push your switch to turn on the electricity to take someone’s life? Because that’s what you’re doing when you pull that switch to vote yes.”

“I believed the bill was necessary,” Ryan wrote. “And so, I pressed green to vote yes.”

The bill passed, 118-41, and later sailed through the Senate and was signed into law by then-Gov. James Thompson.

Ryan would go on to serve as speaker of the House from 1981 to 1983, when he became lieutenant governor under Gov. Jim Edgar. He would serve two terms in that office before being elected secretary of state in 1990, a post that would eventually bring about

his political downfall. But the downfall wouldn’t come before he was elected Illinois’ 39th governor in 1998.

By that time, DNA evidence was becoming widely used to exonerate a number of death row inmates nationwide and the tactics used by police and prosecutors to obtain murder convictions—including the use of jailhouse snitches, phony evidence and coerced confessions—were coming under mounting scrutiny.

On the day of Ryan’s inauguration, the Chicago Tribune published the first in a series of stories about prosecutorial misconduct that identified nearly 400 murder convictions nationwide, including 46 in Illinois, that had been reversed because prosecutors either failed to turn over evidence of a defendant’s innocence or knowingly used false evidence.

But Ryan said the turning point for him came one month into his term as governor, in February 1999, when Illinois death row inmate Anthony Porter was freed after journalism students at Northwestern University uncovered evidence of his innocence. Porter had been granted a stay of execution the previous fall when he was just two days away from his execution date.

“That’s what caught my attention about the death penalty,” Ryan said in the interview.

“And that—kind of a long

story—that evolved, but it was the fact that I was concerned about the whole system is just prone with error. I mean, it’s just got error in every corner.”

Barely a month later, Ryan allowed an execution to go forward, the only one to occur during his administration and the last one carried out in Illinois. Andrew Kokoraleis, who had been convicted of taking part in multiple gruesome murders in the Chicago area by a group of four men who came to be known as the “Ripper Crew.”

“And that was very difficult for me to do,” Ryan recalled.

“This guy was a bad guy, Korkoraleis. He was a terrible guy.”

Kokoraleis was the 12th person executed in Illinois since reinstatement of the death penalty; 11 others had been sentenced to death and later exonerated. Then in May 1999, Cook County prosecutors dismissed charges against Ronald Jones after DNA evidence excluded him as a suspect in the 1985 rape and murder for which he’d been convicted, evening the score at 12.

Pressure soon began mounting to impose a moratorium on executions in Illinois. Ryan initially opposed such a move, but after two more death row inmates were exonerated in the ensuing months he relented and announced a moratorium on Jan. 31, 2000, making

him the first U.S. governor to do so.

“Until I can be sure that everyone sentenced to death in Illinois is truly guilty, until I can be sure with moral certainty that no innocent man or woman is facing lethal injection, no one will meet that fate,” Ryan said at a news conference.

Ryan then established a 14-member Death Penalty Moratorium Commission, made up of prosecutors, defense attorneys and others, that eventually made 85 recommendations on how to tighten the state’s death penalty law to guard against the possibility of executing innocent people.

Ryan writes at length about what happened from there— the behind-the-scenes machinations over the death penalty in the General Assembly; the friction that his decision created within the Republican Party, and with incoming President George W. Bush; and the global reaction within the anti-death penalty movement.

In the end, though, state lawmakers adopted only one of the commission’s 85 recommendations—a requirement that murder interrogations and confessions must be videotaped—prompting Ryan in the final days of his administration to issue the blanket commutation of all death sentences to

life in prison.

“They didn’t want to look like they’re soft on crime,” Ryan said. “I think I talked in my book, when Jim Edgar ran against Dawn Clark Netsch, she was against the death penalty. And he made it look like she was soft on crime and just beat her to death with it. … So I didn’t know how else to do it than what I did.”

By that time, Ryan was already under federal investigation for what came to be known as the “Licenses for Bribes” scandal while he was secretary of state – granting commercial truck driver’s licenses to unqualified drivers in exchange for campaign donations. He was convicted in 2006 and served over five and a half years in federal prison.

Today, Ryan doesn’t spend much time focusing on what happens in Springfield, or on the scandals swirling around the present General Assembly.

“I’m not there anymore and I don’t know all the inside stuff that goes on,” he said. “It’s a tough job being governor and especially in a condition you got today. (JB) Pritzker has got his hands full with the virus and the budget and all other things that are going on. So it’s just gonna take some time to get a lot of this stuff straightened out, and it’s gonna be difficult. I’m not sure I’d want to be there now.”

Cole name Outstanding Assistant State’s Atorney of the Year by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists of Illinois Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim announced this week that Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Lu Cole has been named the Outstanding Assistant State’s Attorney for 2020 by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists - Illinois.

Cole accepted the prestigious award during a brief ceremony at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan. The award was in recognition and gratitude for outstanding dedication to championing the cause of justice for impaired-driving crash victims and their families.

“I am truly honored and privileged to receive this prestigious award from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists,” Cole said. “It’s an honor to work alongside this group in our continued effort to reduce the number of deaths due to people who drive while impaired or distracted.”

Cole has been a Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney for just under two years. She currently works the misdemeanor DUI court call in front of Lake County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Stride.

“We are extremely proud of the hard work Mary performs every day for the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office,” State’s Attorney Nerheim said. “She is the consummate professional and one of the hardest workers in our office. This award is very well deserved.”

The mission of the Alliance against Intoxicated Motorists is to prevent deaths and injuries caused by chemically impaired or distracted operators of any motor vehicle or watercraft and to assist victims of these crashes in Illinois, said Cathy Stanley, court watch director for AAIM. The organization believes deaths and injuries caused by impaired and distracted driving are the willful conduct of drivers. In addition, the organization believes being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or being distracted, does not absolve one of accountability for one’s actions.

AAIM annually names one prosecutor from northern Illinois as the assistant state’s attorney of the year, Stanley said.

In total, AAIM monitors nine court houses from the northern suburbs, including the counties of Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Winnebego and others.

Stanley said Cole’s work routinely stood out from the numerous young assistant state’s attorneys nominated for the award in 2020.

“This award is handed out annually to the assistant state’s attorney who exemplifies our cause to keep the roads safe for the citizens of Illinois,” Stanley said. “Mary does a great job of helping victims and attorneys, She’s very fair, honest, and treats everyone extremely professionally.”

Wisconsin’s autumn splendor is beginning to make an appearance

Just over the state line, the extravaganza of colors in Wisconsin is one show that is undeterred by the pandemic. It’s also possible to socially distance while out on a hike by simply respecting the space if meeting fellow walkers on the trails.

Seeing the colors at their peak is about being in the right place at the right time.

“The vibrant splashes of red we’re seeing now in the north woods are primarily red maples that have been stressed by high water tables in lowland areas,” said Colleen Matula, a forest silviculturist/ecologist with the DNR division of forestry.

“The colors in upland forests are at about 10 percent of their fall colors, so the annual color showcase is just beginning,” Matula said.

Peak fall color usually occurs in far northern Wisconsin during the last week of September and first week of October, with peak color generally occurring during midOctober in central Wisconsin and the latter half of October in southern Wisconsin. The timing of the color change varies by species.

“Fall color predictions by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are based on mathematical algorithms that factor in historical leaf peak, temperatures, precipitation, leaf volume, health and day length,” Matula said.

She said the intensity of Wisconsin’s fall color season is dependent on the weather the state receives during September and October.

“To have the most brilliant and vibrant fall color display, a series of fall days filled with bright sunshine and cool, but frost-free evenings are required,” Matula said.

The state is blessed to have the combination of tree species and climatic conditions necessary for vivid fall foliage and Wisconsin’s state forests and parks offer a wealth of fall color viewing opportunities.

There are a variety of ways to enjoy the colors – from a short hike to a weekend away – and regardless of plans, Travel Wisconsin boasts a Fall Color Report that features an interactive map of the most up-to-date fall color conditions throughout the state.

According to the report, a good portion of the northern part of the state – including Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Hayward, Merrill – was at 30 to 50% color last week with

most areas expected to peak between this week and next.

Most of central and southern Wisconsin was in the range of zero to 10% last week. Those areas are expected to peak in color between the third and fifth weeks of October, based on the Fall Color Report map.

For those wanting to spend some time outside amidst the fall colors and crisp air, the Southern Lakes area offers plenty of options.

Take a walk Among areas featured in a fall hike guide on Travel Wisconsin’s website is the Geneva Lake Shore Path.

The path offers what can be described as million dollar views. It stretches for approximately 21 miles around the lake and offers beautiful views of the water and fall colors.

“But we’re not going to beat around the bush here. We love this path because it gives visitors the perfect opportunity to gawk at the gorgeous mansions that ring the lake,” according to Travel Wisconsin’s report. Among the many mansions that walkers can get a close-up view of are Lake Geneva Estates, Stone Manor and Wrigley Estates.

Among numerous other places to hike or take a leisurely walk in the area are: • Kettle Moraine State Forest, which can be accessed from several points in the Eagle, Palmyra and Whitewater areas. It features miles of rolling hills, prairies and southern hardwood forests. Hiking is available on the Emma Carlin, John Muir, Nordic, Scuppernong and Ice Age National Scenic trails along with several shorter, self-guided nature trails; • Saller Woods, Rochester is a 91acre park featuring nature trails that can be accessed just south of where the Fox River crosses Highway 36; • Mukwonago River Unit is also part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and is west of Mukwonago and north of East Troy. The 970-acre, former Rainbow Springs property is situated in the river watershed with the forest adjacent to Lulu Lake State Natural Area; • Seno K/RLT Conservancy is on Dyer Lake Road, five miles south of Burlington off of Highway P. Near the upper parking area adjacent to the trail head is a blue mailbox that includes trail maps; • White River State Trail, which runs between Elkhorn and Burlington though the thickest foliage – and

presumably best fall color viewing – is located between Elkhorn and Springfield.

For the adventurous Those wanting a bit more of a challenge may want to consider a visit to Holy Hill in Hubertus, just over an hour drive from Burlington or Elkhorn.

The observation deck at Holy Hill Basilica offers quite the view – at 192 feet tall, visitors see a stunning view of the Kettle Moraine Forest Southern Unit. There is also a rich history as Holy Hill Basilica was declared a Shrine of Mary in 1903 and in 2006 became a Minor Basilica.

It’s 178 steps to the observation tower and is the highest point in southeastern Wisconsin. But once there, look to the east and if the conditions warrant, the Milwaukee skyline 30-some miles away can be seen.

While at Holy Hill, visitors are encouraged to stop by the shrine and chapel and walk the grounds. Those who are feeling up to more hiking can

check out the Ice Age Trail, which circles Holy Hill and features several examples of glacial formations such as kettles, moraines and drumlins.

Much more to do “In Wisconsin, autumn is synonymous with apple orchards, corn mazes, hikes and bike rides, all punctuated by nature’s vibrant and beautiful display of fall colors,” said Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary-designee Sara Meaney.

“Whether you’re looking to hear the crunch of leaves beneath your feet on a hike or savor the flavors of fall at a local farm, I encourage everyone to enjoy the season’s many outdoor activities and scenic destinations,” Meaney said.

In addition to tracking peak color, the Fall Color Report on the Travel Wisconsin helps travelers easily view a 3-day weather forecast, as well as nearby lodging, dining and suggestions for things to do while taking in fall color in a particular area.

the colors Leaf color comes from pigments. Pigments are natural substances produced by leaf cells. The three pigments that color leaves are: chlorophyll (green); carotenoid (yellow, orange and brown); and anthocyanin (red), according to the DNR. Chlorophylls and carotenoids are in leaf cells all the time during the growing season. But the chlorophyll covers the carotenoid – that’s why summer leaves are green, not yellow or orange. Most anthocyanins are produced only in autumn, only under certain conditions, and not all trees can make anthocyanin.

As the Earth makes its 365-day journey around the sun, some parts of the planet will get fewer hours of sunlight at certain times of the year. In those regions, the days become shorter and the nights get longer. The temperature slowly drops.

Autumn comes and then winter.

Trees respond to the decreasing amount of sunlight by producing less and less chlorophyll.

Eventually, a tree stops producing chlorophyll.

When that happens, the carotenoid already in the leaves can finally show through. The leaves become a bright rainbow of glowing yellows, sparkling oranges and warm browns.

It’s also noticeable in some years that the red fall colors seem brighter and more spectacular than in other years. The temperature and cloud cover can make a big difference in a tree’s red colors from year to year.

Fall leaf color offers the bonus of helping to identify different tree species. Look for these leaf colors on the trees in your neighborhood: oaks – red, brown or russet; hickories – golden bronze; dogwood – purple-red; birch – bright yellow; and poplar – golden yellow. Maple trees show a whole range of colors – sugar maples show orange-red, black maples, glowing yellow and red maples, bright scarlet.

Sheriff’s Department briefs Man arrested for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child

Joseph Calbillo, 23, of McHenry, was arrested Sept.

22 and charged with two (2) counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, a concerned parent made a report with the Sheriff’s Office. An investigation was initiated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division which revealed that Calbillo was abusing a minor in his care. An arrest warrant was issued for Calbillo for two (2) counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child.

Calbillo was located and arrested by the City of McHenry Police Department on the evening of September

22. The Sheriff’s Office took custody of Calbillo and he was transported to the McHenry County Correctional FaJoseph Calbillo cility.

Two car, motorcycle crash includes one fatality

On September 25, 2020, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 137 and I-94, Green Oaks, for a traffic crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and determined two cars and one motorcycle were involved in the crash.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2019 Chevrolet Sonic, driven by a 76-year-old male of Fox Lake, was traveling eastbound on Route 137.

The driver of the Chevrolet attempted a U-turn or attempted to turn left onto I-94.

A 2007 Ford Five Hundred, driven by a 63-year-old female of Libertyville, was traveling westbound on Route 137 at the same location. The

front of the Ford struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet. A 2013 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, driven by a 32-year-old male of Wauconda was directly behind the Ford. To avoid an impact with a vehicle, the motorcycle operator dropped his motorcycle and slid on the ground.

A front-seat passenger in the Chevrolet, a 74-year-old female of Fox Lake, sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. The driver of the Ford was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries. The driver of the Harley-Davidson was treated and released at the scene with minor injuries.

Sheriff’s Office investigating single motorcycle crash

A 20-year-old Hebron man sustained serious injuries after a single motorcycle crash that occurred in unincorporated Harvard Saturday, Sept. 26.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Harvard Fire Department responded to the scene of a one-vehicle motorcycle crash in the 7200 block of Oak Grove Road in unincorporated Chemung Township at 8:38 p.m. Saturday evening.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a 2008 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle was traveling northbound on Oak Grove Road from Ramer Road when for unknown reasons it traveled off the roadway into the west ditch.

The driver of the motorcycle, the 20-year-old Hebron man, was flown by helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford with serious injuries. The passenger, a 21-yearold McHenry woman, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in Huntley with minor injuries.

The driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the passenger was wearing a helmet. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
